Most recently, she served as CEO of EVgo from 2017 to 2023, taking the company public in 2020. EVgo is now one of the largest EV charging networks in the United States.Today, Cathy is deeply engaged in the energy and climate space. Der US-Amerikaner Fred Edwards hatte Anfang der 70er Jahre die Idee der ersten mobilen Version des stillen Örtchens. Grund dafür war, dass er es unzumutbar fand, dass er als Soldat seine Notdurft in Gesellschaft seiner Kameraden verrichten musste. Die Idee war von Beginn ein Erfolg, doch der ganz große Durchbruch kam erst 1980 als Papst Johannes Paul der Zweite nach München kommt und die mobilen Toilettenkabinen von DIXI erstmals bei einer Großveranstaltung eingesetzt werden. Durch das starke mediale Aufsehen werden die Kabinen weltberühmt. Als Mobiltoilettenmonopolist profitiert DIXI in den Folgejahren von der erhöhten Nachfrage, doch das lässt auch Wettbewerber entstehen. So gründet das Ehepaar Helga und Harald Müller 1983 die Firma TOI TOI Sanitärsysteme in Wiesbaden. Nach einer Fusion in den 90ern ist die TOI TOI & DIXI Group bis heute Weltmarktführer, doch das Unternehmen steht vermutlich bald zum Verkauf, denn das britische Investmentunternehmen Apax Partners, die den Großteil der Firmenanteile hält, möchte das Unternehmen verkaufen. Alan Patricof grew up in a Jewish family on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, the son of parents who had immigrated from Russia to the United States. His father was a small-time stockbroker Patricof graduated from the Ohio State University in 1955, and earned an M.B.A. from Columbia University in 1957 while working full-time as an analyst for an investment firm. Patricof was assigned the management of the Gottesman pulp and paper fortune.and focused his efforts on the new private companies in the portfolio.In 1967, he invested in New York magazine, a new publication, where he served as the founding chairman of the board.m] The magazine proved a success.[1] In 1969, he was able to raise $2.5 million and founded one of the first venture capital firms, Patricof Company Ventures. In 1977, he founded the private equity firm Apax Partners. By the mid-1990s Apax had become one of the larger private equity firms globally. In 2001, Patricof stepped back from day-to-day management of the firm, to return to his original focus on venture capital investments in small early-stage companies. In 2006, he left Apax to form Greycroft Partners which focuses on such investments. Patricof has been married twice: Bette Patricof Hollander.[ They later divorced. They had one child: Mark F. Patricof (b. 1964) who is married to Martha Shelburne Jones, a daughter of Anne Shelburne Jones and Bishop Edward Witker Jones, the 9th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis His second marriage was to Susan Hatkoff.She is the sister of Craig Hatkoff. Episode #50 Alan Patricof, godfather of the VC and PE industries, he's 87 years old now, and founded legendary VC firm Greycroft and seminal PE firm Apax. Alan founded VC fund Patricof Company Ventures with a $2.5m fund in 1969. · Greycroft has over $2bn of AUM with a reputation trying to keep things from getting too big and follow the path of Apax which has AUM of over $60bn. Their last fund I believe closed in January of 2021 at it's hard cap of $11bn. · Alan rather than just add more zeros to Apax, which I think stands for Alan's initials Alan Patricof Associates Cross-Border, Alan moved on from Apax to found Greycroft. Proving his passion for investing early Greycroft raised its first fund (Greycroft I) with $75 million. Some of Alan's investments include Steve Job's Apple Computer, AOL, Xerox, New York Magazine, HuffPost, Audible, Axios, Venmo, Goop, Crafy which we invested in before Greycroft and alongside Greycroft a few weeks ago, Office Depot, and many others. · Now Alan has teamed up with Abby Miller Levy to launch a new VC fund Primetime Partners focused on funding early stage companies that can transform the quality of living for older adults. "הרגליים לא נושאות אותי ואני כמו על גולות. זה נשאר איתי לכל החיים." פנחס מבין לאחר מכן שעשו היסטוריה.  גם בחיסול אבו ג'יהאד  - הוא סגן מפקד היחידה. הוא מספר לחייליו שהוא פוחד - אבל החוכמה היא לצאת מהפחד. וגם המוטו הזה ימשיך איתו להמשך חייו - שהיכולת להתגבר - היא למעשה האומץ להתמודד עם הפחד עצמו.   היה לו חלום נוסף - ללמוד ב- MIT. אז הוא למד הנדסת מחשבים בטכניון הישראלי המכובד. לפעמים אפשר להגשים את מהות החלום בקונסטלציה דומה.  ואז בוגי יעלון אמר לו ב- 89' לחזור לשנה לצבא - מה שנמשך לבסוף עד 2002.   הוא הגיע ליחידה 81 כמהנדס ושם בנה את יכולות הסייבר והפך למפקד היחידה. שם פגש מנטור נוסף - אמנון ליפקין-שחק ז"ל. ביחידה היו כשלים ניהוליים רבים, בתוך גוף שאמון על המצאת אמצעים טכניים. פנחס מצא את הדרך לגעת באנשים ולהפוך את היחידה לגוף מוביל ע"י כמה עקרונות שילוו אותו גם בהמשך: לדבר עם האנשים בגובה העיניים שלהם תחושת ביחד והזדהות - הוא היה בא לשבת עמם בלילות, עת עבדו על פרויקטים דחופים לגבות את האנשים שלך לצקת נהלים ברורים לעבודה והתנהלות פנחס מספר איך ה- DNA של היחידה השתנה לתחושת גאווה משמעותית.   בתפקידו כרמ"ח המ"מ, הוא מבצע אינטגרציות בין היכולות המבצעיות - למדיניות - לטכנולוגיות. והרי באנלוגיה לחיי היזמות - זהו בדיוק תפקיד המנכ"ל שצריך לקבל החלטות לאחר אינטגרציה בין שלושת הזויות לעיל: COO - פיננסים ומשפטי- CTO.   פנחס מרחיב בהקשר זה על יכולתו לזהות יזמים ועל מערכת היחסים העדינה בין הקרן ליזמים:  "מעבר לניתוח השוק והרעיון - היכולת להסתכל על צוות היזמים, מבנהו, האינטגרציה ביניהם, שפת הגוף - האם היא משדרת לכידות אמיתית או לא. בחלק מהסיטואציות, כמשקיע, אתה בעמדה של לשקף לצוות דברים שאינם עובדים כהלכה - כמו למשל, להציע להם להחליף תפקידים בין המנכ"ל לשותף השני. זוהי כמובן החלטה לא פשוטה כלל ועיקר, וכמובן שכל מקרה לגופו - אבל כשחברה מגיעה לקיר - היא מקבלת החלטות נכונות. בשיחה ארוכה בבית על יין וסושי - הצלחנו להגיע להסכמות".   קרן צריכה להיות זהירה ביחס שהיא מפעילה על הסטארטאפים. לפעמים גם צריך לדעת לוותר אם ישנה התנגדות - כי זה הבייבי שלהם. פנחס מקפיד לבוא ליזמים שלו למשרד, לפגוש אותם ואת העובדים ולשאול אותם "מה אתם צריכים?".   פנחס שוב רוצה להשתחרר מהצבא, וליפקין-שחק ממנה אותו להיות מפקד 8200. פנחס פוגש שם אנשים מדהימים אבל הוא בקצה פירמידה. הוא אינו מרוצה מקבלת ההחלטות ומבין שהוא צריך לרדת לרצפת הייצור. עד שיום אחד נופל האסימון: משמעת ההצדעות, ה"הקשב", חדרי האוכל הנפרדים לקצינים - הוא מבין שחייבים לשנות זאת, לחדול מכך ולהכניס לשם תרבות אחרת. מיחידה פאסיבית - להפוך את 8200 ליחידה אקטיבית שתצוד מודיעין. הוא הולך אל חייליו למשרדים, למגרש הביתי שלהם, שם הוא יכול להקשיב להם והם מרגישים נוח. ב- 97-98' הוא מכניס את הסייבר לתוך היחידה, תקופה של הרבה הרוגים בלבנון, וזה משנה את התנהלות צה"ל בלבנון. גאוות היחידה עולה. הם פותחים בי"ס להכשרת סייבר - גנרטור להכשרת לוחמי סייבר התקפי. כל קורס שמתגייס - פנחס משוחח עימו ומעביר את המסרים הראויים. פנחס מוביל שינוי ארגוני וטכנולוגי והיחידה לומדת להתאים עצמה למציאות המשתנה. ישנה התנגדות חיצונית רבה למהלך הזה - אבל פנחס מפגין את אותה הנחישות המוכרת לו. באירוע קידום מועמדים לקצונה בכירה - ניגשת אחת האמהות אל פנחס, ואומרת לו שיש משהו שאינו יודע.  היא מספרת לו שרון, אותו אל"מ שמועמד, היה חטוף באנטבה. רון הופך להיות הסגן שלו לשנה וחצי הבאות וזוהי סגירת מעגל משמעותית.   בית הגידול העסקי פנחס משתחרר ב- 2002 עם הרגשה של חיבור לעוצמות פנימיות מטורפות. הוא מחליט לקחת לעצמו חצי שנה של להוריד… להוריד הילוך, להוריד את תחושת ההתעלות, לנרמל. פעמיים בשבוע בחוף באפולוניה. ואז מגיעה Apax. עסקת הפרטת בזק. פנחס מנהל מו"מ של חצי שנה ושיחות אישיות עם ועד העובדים. ואז הוא מבין - שעבורם, זהו לא מקום העבודה, זה הבית, ומשם - מתנהל מו"מ אסטרטגי, מלא הקשבה ועימו מצליחים להגיע להסכמה.   ב2007 הוא מתמנה להיות מנכ"ל משרד הבטחון. הימים הם אחרי מלחמת לבנון השניה והוא מרגיש שאינו יכול להישאר מנגד. אם בקבלת החלטות מורכבות עסקינן - פנחס מקבל 2 החלטות משמעותיות שמצביעות גם הן על הנחישות והתעוזה שמלווים אותו כחוט השני בחייו: העברת צה"ל ועיר הבה"דים לנגב. כיפת ברזל. היתה התנגדות מטורפת של הצבא, היו כאלו שדחפו את "נאוטילוס". ביחד עם אמיר פרץ, פנחס מתחיל את הפרויקט ברפאל ומנהל זאת כמו סטארטאפ. כל 4-6 שבועות דיון על ההתקדמות. תוך שנתיים - ניסויים ראשונים מוצלחים. זו היתה גאווה עצומה עבורו והרבה אנשים וארגונים מעולים שעזרו לו להוביל את המהלך הזה.   פנחס מתמנה למנכ"ל בז"ן, ואחרי שנתיים וחצי עוזב, בידיעה שלא למד מספיק את הרגולציות הנוגעות לאיכות הסביבה טרם כניסתו לתפקיד. ממרום שנותיו כמפקד ומנהל - הוא יודע לזהות מתי זה לא מדוייק עבורו ולהמשיך הלאה.   משם הוא מצטרף ל- SOMV כשותף מנהל ב- 2 קרנות ומוביל השקעות.   פנחס יודע שהממשק עם היזמים זורם בדמו, ושהוא מוצא את הדרך הנכונה להתחבר אליהם. הוא נפגש עמם לעזור להם לחשוב ולדייק את החוטים שימשכו אותם  ואת המיזמים שלהם עוד קצת למעלה - ממש כפי שהדסה פלס ואמנון ליפקין-שחק עשו עבורו.   "רק רציתי להיות טייס, כל השאר קרה כיד המקרה…". ואני מוסיפה - שעם אמונה פנימית בוערת, ראיית הזדמנויות, נחישות, תעוזה והתמדה  - הכל אפשרי.

Private equity (PE), like any other industry, is not immune from this growing threat. 1H2021 saw increase in ransomware attacks in PE portfolio companies, which is especially troublesome for an industry that has traditionally taken a less rigorous approach to information security and cyber defense. PE has, however, begun to embrace the necessary investments needed to understand their intrinsic risk, prepare for the inevitable breach and respond quickly. While it is inherently difficult to gauge or predict the monetary cost of a breach, PE must consider that a breach can degrade an asset's sale price or, in rare cases, be a “dealbreaker” altogether. In addition to potential impact on transactions, skyrocketing insurance costs render the cost of negligence far greater than the cost of investing in a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy. Cybersecurity due diligence is increasingly becoming industry standard and should focus on past, present and future. For PE, future risk is an especially critical consideration since capital deployment can dramatically change the threat landscape of an asset. Five gold standard cybersecurity practices for PE include: Understand your threat landscape Identify what a hacker would find valuable and attractive about your company Identify critical business functions and adopt procedures to monitor, defend and preserve functionality in the event of an attack Inform security leadership of the technology strategy and broader business plan so they can anticipate changes to the attack surface Understand how new technology can generate new attack vectors and impact your threat landscape

This Shot Caller story, told by Nicola Foulston, CEO of Rosenblatt Solicitors in London, will give you a birds eye view into the life of a true business disruptor!  Do you think you are too young to disrupt a male dominated industry? Do you think you are too old to disrupt a male dominated industry?  Nicola will prove you wrong on BOTH accounts. Nicola inherited Brands Hatch race track, a beloved British motor racing circuit in Kent, England, at the age of 19 when her father died suddenly.  She saw an opportunity to transform this "old boys" sporting event, focused on the experience for the racer into a smashingly successful hospitality business, focused on the experience of the consumer!  One of the biggest hurdles she experienced at this time had more to do with her age than with her sex.  She sold Brands Hatch 7 years later in 1997 for GBP 120m/ $150m!  This huge turnaround story earned her the Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the Year, which she received in 1997 as CEO of Brands Hatch Leisure Group. To date, she is the youngest woman ever to have received this honor. Nicola explains the importance of asking questions and how valuable it was to her to have John Moulton, a top British venture capitalist as her mentor. After listing Brands Hatch and netting a few pretty pennies, Nicola retired to Switzerland to start a family. She organically ended up running a family office where she made strategic, private investments.  Her first two investments happened to be founded by women. Nicola admits that having a young family and trying to run a corporation was not possible for her.  She saw her opportunity to start her family after selling her business and feels that was absolutely the right decision for her. In 2016, Nicola was enticed out of retirement by Ian Rosenblatt, the lawyer she appointed at the age of 19, early on in her Brands Hatch days.  He knew if anyone could disrupt and reinvent the legal profession, it was Nicola Foulston!  She used her formula of pairing the business back to nuts and bolts and understanding how it made money.  It took her less than two years to do what she did with Brands Hatch, list the law firm on the London AIM stock exchange, raising GBP 43m/ $56m. Her goal, to self-fund their Litigation business, which is a very niche and profitable part of law.  Rosenblatt was only the 4th Law firm to list in the UK.  Nicky is unapologetically commercial and their firm has a net operating margin of 35%, which is exceptional. With their litigation fund, they can help the David's take on the Goliath's. We talk about promoter vs. prevention questions in the venture capital fundraising world.  Women get asked prevention questions and men the promoter questions. There are use cases for analytics and artificial intelligence today but they need to look externally for help. I'll admit that when I read that Apax was investing $200M in a company that delivers analytics and AI solutions to the financial industry, I had never heard of Fractal Analytics. My guest today, chief practice officer at Fractal Sankar Narayanan told me that a Forrester analyst called Fractal the best kept secret in customer analytics. Part hard technology and part professional services, Fractal works with many of the largest financial institutions around the world to improve their onboarding, marketing, and customer service, resulting in changes of hundreds of millions of dollars. Sankar and I discuss AI and analytics and why it's so hard for financial services firms to really embrace this set of technologies. He gives us concrete examples of the type of programs FIs can implement to improve company-wide decision making. Sankar also explains why AI isn't a catch-all for financial companies and how data engineering and behavioral science — together with AI — can scale decision making in financial services to the enterprise level.
