Though he was never seen, Andy Wilman was an inextricable part of the success of Top Gear. He's the co-creator and executive producer of the show, which has been seen by over 350 million people around the world. And when Top Gear came to a close, he was in charge of The Grand Tour, the show that picked up right where its predecessor left off, and now Wilman is running Amazon's record-breaking show Clarkson's Farm. More than two decades later, he's written a book about how it all came to be, looking behind the scenes in ‘Mr Wilman's Motoring Adventure'. While it may have started out as an ordinary TV show, Top Gear quickly became a phenomenon, and Wilman told Mike Hosking there were dozens of tiny moments that made them realise it. “Richard [Hammond's] crash, obviously, we were, I think we were already big by then, but Richard's crash stunned us at how we were part of the nation's TV watching fabric.” “I think the, the things, the elements that were inevitable were because we were making things up as we went along, because we had no plan,” he explained. “So you surprise yourself ... those moments in turn generate new material, which keeps you fresh.” But as the viewership grew, so did the pressure, and the combination of a smaller crew size, ideological differences within the BBC, and the team getting “too big for their boots” started to cause problems. “Those three elements were the perfect storm that led to our demise.” A little further down the line is Clarkson's Farm, which despite being a smaller production, Wilman says is more rewarding. “[It's] a far more challenging and rewarding show to make, simply because they shoot all the time.” Since Clarkson is at work from the moment he steps out his front door, the filming has to cover everything. “We just shoot and shoot and shoot and then we'll see what sticks to the wall.” And a large part of the show's appeal is its supporting cast, which Wilman says was like catching lightning in a bottle for the second time. “A bit like Jeremy, Richard, and James – you couldn't plan that.” “Magic happened.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"You can't rewind": James May takes to the stage with 'exciting' new show When you hear the name ‘James May', it's likely you think of cars, Top Gear, and The Grand Tour, but much like his co-stars, May has plenty of other projects. He owns his own pub and gin line, and has done countless shows visiting other countries, rebuilding toys and machines, and exploring life's questions. May's now onto his next journey – a live theatre performance that brings the stories of explorers to the stage. It's called ‘Explorers: The Age of Discovery', and May's bringing it to Kiwi audiences in August. It's been quite a busy year for May – something he told Mike Hosking was quite unintentional. “This year was going to be my, what I called a ‘dry run at retirement', to see how much I liked it,” he revealed. “But I've ended up doing a live tour, a couple of TV shows, various other odds and ends – it's actually the busiest year I've had for probably a decade, in terms of demands on my time.” “But maybe that's a good thing,” he said. “Maybe if I was left to my own devices, I'd sit in the garden and rot.” Despite his vast experience in the entertainment industry, May isn't terribly experienced with live performances. “We used to do Top Gear Live and then Clarkson, Hammond & May Live, but there were three of us doing it, plus our stunt driving team and various other circus performers,” he explained. “This one is quite intimidating because it just me." GM ended the plan shortly after.Ford rolled out a similar workaround ahead of the credit's expiration but has declined to confirm whether it plans to continue offering the lease incentives.At a “Bolt Block Party” at Universal Studios Hollywood, GM has officially reintroduced the Chevy Bolt, its beloved affordable EV.The new Bolt gains GM's Ultium 65kWh LFP battery for faster charging, improved range, and bidirectional home power support.Charging now jumps to 150kW (10–80% in 26 minutes) — triple the previous speed — with 255 miles of range and Tesla's NACS port for Supercharger access.The interior gets a bigger screen, refreshed materials and GM's SuperCruise driver assist with lane-changing “route following.”Pricing starts at just under $29K, making it the cheapest announced EV in the U.S., with production starting in early 2026.The only controversy? He drove for one of the least competitive teams in F1 history. He never started a race, but just making it to Formula 1 was ‘a million to one' shot for Perry McCarthy making it to F1. Through extraordinary determination, he made it. When his raw talent behind the wheel was spotted at his local racetrack, McCarthy set his sights on racing at the top. He worked on a North Sea oil rig to raise money to fund his career. Racing in Formula 3000 and sports cars in America led to a chance in F1 with Andrea Moda – a team which only raced for one season in 1992. When Perry made it to the track, the car either broke down or was too slow to make it through an extra ‘pre-qualifying' session. From climbing the motorsport ladder with drivers including Damon Hill, to testing with Michael Schumacher at Benetton, and later becoming the mysterious ‘Stig' on TV's Top Gear, Perry tells Tom Clarkson an eye-opening story from a different era of Formula 1.
