The rebuild of Juventus' midfield looks to be closing in on its first big addition, with the very complicated players-plus-cash swap deal with Aston Villa reportedly close from crossing the finish line. On Episode 236 of The Old Lady Speaks, we discuss: Thiago Motta is officially Juventus' new manager! Surprise! Juventus look close to completing a swap deal involving three players that would see Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz be one of Motta's first big signings of the summer. What would Douglas Luiz bring to the table? We take a look. Some of the other recent transfer rumors don't have us as happy as the Douglas Luiz deal — most notably how Juventus continue to be linked with a move for Manchester United's Mason Greenwood. Just a week after it looked like Juventus keeper Wojciech Szczesny wasn't going to probably consider a bid from Saudi Arabia, he now looks like he could be going to the Middle East as Juve try and make their transition in goal possible early in the summer transfer window. The summer transfer market is starting to heat up for Juventus, and that means the first names that soon-to-be manager Thiago Motta and director Cristiano Giuntoli are eyeing up have dominated the rumor mill. On Episode 235 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: The transfer rumor mill has been busy lately — and not all of those rumors are ones that make us happy as Juventus fans. The biggest potential departure being talked about over the last week involves Federico Chiesa's status at Juventus and if he's truly in Thiago Motta's plans as contract talks look to have cooled off in recent weeks. A Juve player who looks more and more like he's leaving is goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. And that is because Juve are on the cusp of signing Monza's Michele Di Gregorio, a player who very much suits Motta's style of play more than the 34-year-old Szczesny. Juventus' negotiations for Teun Koopmeiners won't be easy — but then again, we figured that would be the case because of how much Atalanta want for him. Other thoughts on potential Juventus transfer moves, most notably their chase for Riccardo Calafiori and just what some of these rumored player exchanges would do for the team's depth going into next season. The self-inflicted wounds were taken to an extreme Saturday, with game-changing mistakes being stacked up on top of one another in Juventus' first loss of the 2023-24 season. On Episode 173 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Juventus' loss to Sassuolo was a comedy of errors and how it was actually kinda interesting, how this was a little like the Bologna game in which Juve went out and tried to do what they have been doing even amidst the struggle, and how we are waiting to see what Max Allegri's next move is. So, yeah. About Juventus' 4-2 loss to Sassuolo. Those mistakes by Wojciech Szczesny ... what happened there? So, where does Juventus go from here knowing big games are fast approaching? Social media questions — including if it's truly time for Juventus to start looking for a long-term replacement for Wojciech Szczesny, how much criticism/credit does Max Allegri deserve so far this season, is there any realistic hope that Juve can find a backup to Manuel Locatelli during the winter transfer window, if Juve can survive with three at the back, and if it's fair to blame Federico Gatti for as much most have considering he's still relatively young. In a bid to not over-promise and under-deliver (classic Richard Leeism, that), we did state our next Between the Sticks would be three-to-four days after the last. Thankfully, we've managed to sync schedules and produce the following. All the key action from the majority of second group games is covered, including Diogo Costa's near mishap against Ghana and Wayne Hennessey's absolute mishap in Wales' defeat to Iran. Munir Mohamedi admirably stepped in at the eleventh hour for Bono as Morocco shocked Belgium, Edouard Mendy silenced the doubters with a couple of fine saves in Senegal's win over hosts Qatar, and Wojciech Szczesny stamped his name in World Cup folklore with one of the finest double saves you'll ever see in the tournament. Naturally, there's a wealth of Commentary Corner content, too. --- If you like what we do, taking a moment to jot a review on iTunes would be hugely appreciated. If you're not so keen on what we do, please do let us know that as well.

The jury found Tuesday that the NCAA was not negligent in the death of Matthew Gee. Lawyers for the widow of Gee, a linebacker on the 1990 Rose Bowl-winning squad, say he endured an estimated 6,000 hits as a college athlete. They say this caused permanent brain damage and led to cocaine and alcohol abuse, which eventually killed him at age 49. The NCAA said it had nothing to do with his death. MLB – Verlander, Pujols voted Comeback Players of the Year Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols have won baseball’s Comeback Player of the Year awards. Messi’s quest to win the one major title to elude him got off to a shocking start and brought back memories of Cameroon’s 1-0 win over an Argentina team led by Diego Maradona in the opening game of the 1990 World Cup. Goals by Saleh Alshehri and Salem Aldawsari in a five-minute span in the second half gave the Saudis their greatest win. Messi stood with his hands on his hips near the center circle and looking stone-faced as Saudi Arabia’s jubilant players ran in all directions around him. Mexico 0, Poland 0 – Draw – Mexico and Poland play out 0-0 draw at World Cup Robert Lewandowski’s second-half penalty attempt was saved by Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and left Poland to settle for a 0-0 draw at the World Cup. Poland’s all-time leading scorer with 76 goals remains without one at the World Cup. The Poland forward was awarded the penalty following a VAR review after Hector Moreno got hold of his shirt and pulled him down. Ochoa came up yelling in celebration after his stop. Mexico dominated possession but Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny turned away all three of El Tri’s shots on goal. Tunisia 0, Denmark 0 – Draw – Tunisia holds Denmark 0-0 as Arab teams impress at World Cup Tunisia held European Championship semifinalist Denmark to a 0-0 draw at the World Cup. The result came three hours after Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in a shocking upset and before a stadium filled almost entirely with Tunisia supporters in another big result for Arab nations competing at the first World Cup in the Middle East. An expert save shortly before halftime by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel helped Denmark preserve the draw. The match marked Christian Eriksen’s return to a major tournament less than a year and a half after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. France 4, Australia 1 – Giroud, Mbappe help France beat Australia 4-1 at World Cup France showed it can cope without its star striker at the World Cup. Kylian Mbappe scored one and set up the second of Olivier Giroud’s two goals to help the defending champions beat Australia 4-1. Giroud equaled Thierry Henry’s national record of 51 goals with a header from Mbappe’s cross. Mbappe headed in a cross moments earlier. He knelt with one hand behind his back and his finger on his forehead in a new celebration. Craig Goodwin gave Australia the lead in the ninth minute. Adrien Rabiot equalized with a header in the 27th and set up Giroud’s first goal shortly after. Eriksen started in his customary playmaker position for Denmark’s opening game at the World Cup against Tunisia in Group D and played the full 90 minutes of a 0-0 draw. Medics used a defibrillator to restart Eriksen’s heart after he collapsed and was lifeless on the field at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen in June of last year. His appearance at the World Cup is the latest step of a remarkable comeback that has already seen him return to elite soccer in the Premier League. FIFA – FIFA charges Ecuador over fan chants at World Cup opener Discriminatory chants allegedly by Ecuador fans at the World Cup opening game led FIFA to open the first disciplinary case of the tournament. FIFA says the charge was brought “due to chants” at the game against Qatar on Sunday. FIFA cited the section of its disciplinary code dealing with discrimination. The chants were reportedly directed at Chile whose soccer federation brought a legal case ahead of the World Cup to try to take Ecuador’s place.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Juve got another early lead before again seeing that lead go up in smoke against Fiorentina on their way to a third draw in five games and more dropped points from a winning position. On this week's episode of the Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including worries about Juan Cuadrado and if Father Time is catching up with the 34-year-old Colombian winger, and Mattia Perin's fine form and the pressure he might be putting on Wojciech Szczesny. Talking about the elephant in the room. No, not Juventus beating Spezia after a disappointing draw against Roma last weekend. More so another disappointing 1-1 draw, this time against Fiorentina. The issue with Max Allegri going ultra-conservative again and how it's truly impacting Juventus' success at the moment. Just how bad is it for Juventus right now and can things actually get better when some of the injured players come back. (Essentially, will the talent of the players overcome the shortcomings of their current manager.) We were going to talk about the summer mercato, but then we ended up just talking about Max Allegri some more. You can understand why. Twitter questions — including can Allegri keep his job if Juventus don't get out of the Champions League group stage, how long of a leash does Allegri have if these types of performances/results continue, do we think Max actually knows what he's doing, why can't Juve actually create consistent scoring chances and our thoughts on Leandro Paredes' debut with Juventus. Playing its third game in a little over a week, Juventus concluded its preseason tour in the U.S. with a strugglefest against the reigning European champions, Real Madrid. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Rather than takeaways from the week that was, we have some takeaways from Juventus' summer tour in the United States now that it has come to an end. Some thoughts on Juventus' 2-0 loss to Real Madrid to close out the U.S. tour. (Don't worry, they're not much simply because Juve didn't show all that much against the reigning European champions.) This might be hard to believe, but there's a gulf in quality between Real Madrid and Juventus right now and Saturday night's friendly only confirmed that. Injuries! Injuries are here! It's not just Paul Pogba now, but Weston McKennie looks set to miss a month after separating his shoulder in training the morning of the Real Madrid friendly. Wojciech Szczesny also didn't play against Real Madrid, although it's unclear just how serious his muscle injury is. Twitter questions — including positives and negatives from the U.S. tour, who Max Allegri's Swiss Army knife could be this coming season, what players or tactics could help Juventus with its struggles of playing out of the back, what Juve's midfield could look like if there are no more additions this summer, and can we actually expect an improved Juve under Allegri this year. Most footballers are men of many talents. And although football is their priority, they still try to make time for those other hobbies and try to explore their other talents. In this video, we will be looking at 10 top footballers who have tried their hands on music at one point or another. Many of them actually had a good go at it, while some were just straight-up hilarious. 1. Erling Haaland 2. Memphis Depay 3. Jese 4. Kevin Prince Boateng 5. Ronaldinho 6. Rio Ferdinand 7. Petr Cech 8. Wojciech Szczesny 9. Lionel Messi 10. Mario Balotelli
Juventus scored two goals in the first half — really! — and Wojciech Szczesny showed off his penalty-stopping ability once again as Juventus put more distance between itself and the chasing pack for a Champions League spot over the weekend. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how style points, especially at this point of the season, are secondary to getting three points, and how Juve now finally have some serious breathing room between themselves and their closest competition for fourth place. Some talk about Juventus' win over Sampdoria and how odd of a win it was. Seriously, it was an odd win where Juve were relatively in control yet got outshot 16-6, needed a penalty save to keep Sampdoria off the scoreboard then saw Samp score on a wild deflection to cut the lead in half. A look-ahead to Wednesday night's big showdown with Villarreal in the Champions League Round of 16. An Adrien Rabiot-related tangent. A Twitter question about which one of the currently injured players who are close to returning could Juventus miss the least against Villarreal. A Twitter question that's not actually from Twitter regarding Juventus' style of player under Max Allegri and if we think it's sustainable going into the future. Juventus' season-opening struggles continued against Napoli this past weekend, and it's not like they're doing a whole lot to inspire confidence that they'll turn it around any time soon. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks, we discuss: Juventus played like crap again, this time against Napoli. The suddenly glaring problem Juventus has in goal with Wojciech Szczesny. How much of a leash should Szczesny have after another game-changing mistake? Does that return of the South Americans inspire any kind of confidence that things will be a little bit better come Tuesday night against Malmö in the Champions League group stage opener? The drama Sunday started well before kickoff and lasted well after Juventus opened the 2021-22 season with a disappointing 2-2 draw against Udinese at the Friuli. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Cristiano Ronaldo didn't start against Udinese, and the reasons as to why he was on the bench come kickoff differ depending on who you believe (either Max Allegri or the Italian press). Thoughts on the 2-2 draw against Udinese to open the 2021-22 season. Where did Max Allegri go wrong — especially in the second half? — against Udinese? What the hell is up with Wojciech Szczesny? Twitter questions involving Juve's new third kits, Weston McKennie transfer rumors, Aaron Ramsey's performance vs. Udinese and just how interested we think Juventus was in signing Gianluigi Donnarumma earlier this summer. Euro 2020 betting tips, picks and predictions from Oddspedia on Group D & Group E's Matchday 1 fixtures: Scotland vs Czech Republic, Poland vs Slovakia and Spain vs Sweden. The atmosphere may be fiery in Glasgow on Monday afternoon as the Czech Republic take on Scotland at Hampden Park. The relationship between these two nations soured during 2021 due to the racist incidents that occurred between Rangers and Sparta Prague in the Europa League. It will be interesting to see whether this ignites any added animosity between the sets of fans and if that has any effect on the players that line-up on the field. This game will have been pinpointed by both sets of managers as vital for qualification to the Round of 16, knowing that England and Croatia are probably tougher opponents than their immediate rivals. Let's take a look at Group E now, and we'll start with Poland against Slovakia. The Slovaks are mighty outside for this one, probably due to the overall strength of the Polish squad from goalkeeper all the way up the spine to their leader in attack. Polish will line up with Wojciech Szczesny between the sticks, Kamil Glik in the centre of defence, Napoli's Piotr Zielinski pulling the strings in midfield, and then arguably the world's best striker Robert Lewandowski in attack. That's not a bad team at all. Let's hope Lewa can get the supply his goalscoring threat can feed on. The other game in Group C is Spain vs Sweden. Again, the outsiders have massive odds, with the Swedes coming in at 8.5 to get the win over the 2008 European Championship winners. Those odds seem particularly high to us, with Spain's progress and status heading into the tournaments looking less than ideal. They will be without talisman Sergio Ramos, and Luis Enrique has not called up any Real Madrid players at all to the Spain squad for the first time in their national team history. It's a bold move and without any star striker leading the line, there are question marks on where their goals will come from. We quite fancy the double chance on Sweden with odds of 2.90. Our resident host Eduardo Siles is back to preview all the best action across Euro 2020. He's gone man-to-man marking with Alvaro Romeo for this one. The second game of 2021 brought us one of Juventus' biggest wins of the season to date just when they needed it the most. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks, we discuss: So, how about that Federico Chiesa performance against Milan. eh? So, how a1bout that Wojciech Szczesny performance against Milan, eh? With two wins to start 2021, how much of this might come down to Andrea Pirlo's system finally getting to stick? Sergio would like to let you know something about how he feels about Milan fans' behavior during the 2020-21 season to date. (And it's not like we all objected The wild Wednesday in Serie A basically characterizes what the Scudetto race is looking like right now.
