The Good News We proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ: GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA With faithfulness we respond to the good news: We acknowledge Christ as our saviour and accept with gratitude, that we are forgiven for all wrong doings, past and present. To honour the gift of forgiveness, we release our burden of guilt and rise up to live in the glory of God forever more. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever. Let us Pray. The greeting The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. The Sentence if required The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.' The prayer of preparation. Let us pray. Almighty God, To whom all hearts are open, All desires known, And from whom no secrets are hidden, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen Hear O Israel, the Lord our God the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.' The Confession Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Lord, have mercy on us, and write your law in our hearts by your Holy Spirit. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed; And in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart, we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Assurance of Forgiveness Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord have mercy Christ have mercy God have mercy The Gloria, we say together Glory to God in the highest and peace to God's people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One; you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect of the Day – Year C - Luke The Collect of the day. Eternal God, at the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan, you proclaimed him your beloved son, and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: grant that all who are baptised into his name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and saviour; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. The Prayer of the Week First Sunday after Epiphany Almighty God who anointed Jesus at his baptism with the Holy Spirit and revealed him as your beloved son: inspire us, your children, who are born again of water and the spirit, to surrender our lives to your service, that we may rejoice to be called your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen The Old Testament, Scripture Reading 1 Isaiah 43:1-7. 1But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. 4Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. 5Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; 6I will say to the north, “Give them up,” and to the south, “Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth— 7everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” Hear the word of the Lord Thanks be to God. The Psalm Psalm 29 The New Testament, Scripture Reading 2 The Second Reading, is from the New Testament, Acts 8:14-17. 14Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit 16(for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). 17Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. The lord be with you. And also with you. The Gospel reading. We welcome the gospel: Alleluia, Alleluia. We welcome the gospel, Alleluia. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke 3:15-22 As you make a small cross signs on your own forehead, left cheek and upper chest, we say together ‘Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ'. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 15As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” 18So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. 19But Herod the ruler, who had been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the evil things that Herod had done, 20added to them all by shutting up John in prison. The Baptism of Jesus 21Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ. A short homily on todays gospel. Luke 3:15-22 When Jesus was baptised, the heavens opened, yet for others, heaven remained closed. Jesus up until that point had not yet openly started his ministry, had not started to carryout God's intentions through him. So what had Jesus done at the point of being baptised that He was treated differently by God? Belief and faith were the difference, Jesus was already deeply committed to being one with God. From a small child, Jesus had shown commitment and steadfast obligation to remain in God's presence in all he did. Little wonder then that at that baptism moment, the scales tipped, and the heavens opened, because Jesus had done something he didn't need to do. Because despite Jesus', already accrued knowledge and pledge in God, he then lowered himself to be the same as everyone else and he went to John for baptism. Jesus was already fully dedicated in serving God and so in that moment, God announces his intention for him by naming him ‘The beloved Son of God'. While ascending the dizzying heights of faith in God, we can sometimes forget that God needs us on the ground with the people. Then God's intention for us through our commitment to Him becomes clear. Let us pause for a moment to reflect. The belief and principle is said I believe in God, creator of heaven and earth, whose love and merciful forgiveness endures everlasting. I believe in Christ the saviour, whose example of love and compassion, taught us a restored way to live, in collaborative unity with all people. I believe in the Holy Spirit, whose divine guidance brings us together to be one with the Holy Trinity. The Nicene Creed We believe in God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God, God from God, Light from Light, of one Being with the Father. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father in glory and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who has spoken through the Prophets. We acknowledge the forgiveness of sins and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers Let us pray for the world and for the church. God, we give you thanks for opening our eyes to witness your hand at work in the gifts that surround us. Thank you for your continued love and blessings in abundance throughout our lives. Bless us with your generous nature good Lord, as we answer your call to minister to your will. Guide us to walk before you in faithfulness, in righteousness and in upright honour towards you. God of Love we ask you. Hear our Prayer God, we offer thanks for your blessing of peace across all countries and continents. Give all your servants an understanding mind, able to recognise between good and evil. Give us all wise and discerning minds, that we might know how to honour God in our life. God of Love we ask you. Hear our Prayer God, we thank you for the church leaders in Australia, teach them to refresh us through their leadership. Guide our bishops, ministers and lay people and renew our courage to proclaim the good news of Christ in our schools, workplaces, and homes. God of Love we ask you. Hear our Prayer God, we pray thanks that with your guidance we live in your light and go out in your name to help others who are less fortunate. We pray that through our reverence in the name of Christ, we become new and maintain our light even when surrounded by darkness. God of Love we ask you. Hear our Prayer Heavenly Father, we thank you that through your Son Jesus Christ, you have shown us the way to live and breathe in your righteousness. Give us the strength to remain in your presence in all we do. Help us to be willing advocates of your work, guiding our actions to a better life for all. God of Love we ask you. Hear our Prayer We pause for a moment for you to pray for your own petitions. Almighty God you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our lord. Amen The greeting of peace: We are the body of Christ. His spirit is with us. The peace of the lord be always with you And also, with you. Let us all exchange a sign of peace. The Preparation for the Lord's Supper We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he is us. Amen. The thanksgiving: Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere mighty creator ever living God. We give you thanks and praise for our saviour Jesus Christ who by the power of your spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with the whole company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, forever praising you, and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that comes in the name of the LORD. Hosanna in the highest. Merciful God we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your word and Holy Spirit we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread and when he had given you thanks he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying ‘take eat. This is my body given for you do this in remembrance of me.' After supper he took the cup and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples saying drink from this all of you this is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. The memorial acclamation: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Therefore, we do as our saviour has commanded proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension and looking for his coming again we celebrate with this bread and this cup his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your son and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal Kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord with whom and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you father in songs of never ending praise. Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord's Prayer As our saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Jesus Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. The gifts of God for the people of God. Come, let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that He died for us, and feed on Him in our hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. As we minister the bread to each of the people gathered, we say: ‘The body of Christ, keep you in eternal life', and they respond with: ‘Amen'. As we minister the cup to each of the people gathered, we say: ‘The blood of Christ, the cup of salvation, keep you in eternal life'; and they respond with: ‘Amen'. Please pause the recording while you minister the gifts and offer personal prayers of gratitude. On Continuing: Living God, in this holy meal you fill us with NewHope. May the power of your love, which we have known in word and sacrament, continue your saving work among us, give us courage for our pilgrimage, and bring us to the joys, you promise. We say together: Most loving God, you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage, in the power of your holy spirit. The Final Blessing The peace of God which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. The Dismissal We have today proclaimed the message of Christ in our homes, go forth and proclaim the message of Christ in your streets, towns, cities and countries, that all are saved by the death and resurrection of our saviour. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ, Amen. Music by John Keys – Anglican Chant Canticle organ accompaniments. A reminder disclaimer to the listener. Venite (Psalm 95:1-7)Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: Come let us adore him. Come, let us sing to the Lord; * let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving * and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, * and a great King above all gods.In his hand are the caverns of the earth, * and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, * and his hands have molded the dry land.Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, * and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice! Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: Come let us adore him. The PsalterPsalm 75Confitebimur tibi1We give you thanks, O God, we give you thanks, *calling upon your Name and declaring all your wonderful deeds.2“I will appoint a time,” says God; *“I will judge with equity.3Though the earth and all its inhabitants are quaking, *I will make its pillars fast.4I will say to the boasters, ‘Boast no more,' *and to the wicked, ‘Do not toss your horns;5Do not toss your horns so high, *nor speak with a proud neck.' ”6For judgment is neither from the east nor from the west, *nor yet from the wilderness or the mountains.7It is God who judges; *he puts down one and lifts up another.8For in the Lord's hand there is a cup, full of spiced and foaming wine, which he pours out, *and all the wicked of the earth shall drink and drain the dregs.9But I will rejoice for ever; *I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.10He shall break off all the horns of the wicked; *but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.Psalm 76Notus in Judæa1In Judah is God known; *his Name is great in Israel.2At Salem is his tabernacle, *and his dwelling is in Zion.3There he broke the flashing arrows, *the shield, the sword, and the weapons of battle.4How glorious you are! *more splendid than the everlasting mountains!5The strong of heart have been despoiled;they sink into sleep; *none of the warriors can lift a hand.6At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, *both horse and rider lie stunned.7What terror you inspire! *who can stand before you when you are angry?8From heaven you pronounced judgment; *the earth was afraid and was still;9When God rose up to judgment *and to save all the oppressed of the earth.10Truly, wrathful Edom will give you thanks, *and the remnant of Hamath will keep your feasts.11Make a vow to the Lord your God and keep it; *let all around him bring gifts to him who is worthy to be feared.12He breaks the spirit of princes, *and strikes terror in the kings of the earth. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. LessonsEzra 9English Standard Version9 After these things had been done, the officials approached me and said, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands with their abominations, from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands. And in this faithlessness the hand of the officials and chief men has been foremost.” 3 As soon as I heard this, I tore my garment and my cloak and pulled hair from my head and beard and sat appalled. 4 Then all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the faithlessness of the returned exiles, gathered around me while I sat appalled until the evening sacrifice. 5 And at the evening sacrifice I rose from my fasting, with my garment and my cloak torn, and fell upon my knees and spread out my hands to the Lord my God, 6 saying:“O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens. 7 From the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt. And for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering, and to utter shame, as it is today. 8 But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant and to give us a secure hold within his holy place, that our God may brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our slavery. 9 For we are slaves. Yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, but has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, to grant us some reviving to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us protection in Judea and Jerusalem.10 “And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments, 11 which you commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land that you are entering, to take possession of it, is a land impure with the impurity of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations that have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness. 12 Therefore do not give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.' 13 And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a remnant as this, 14 shall we break your commandments again and intermarry with the peoples who practice these abominations? Would you not be angry with us until you consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape? 15 O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this.”Revelation 17:1-14English Standard Version17 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.” 3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. 5 And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth's abominations.” 6 And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. When I saw her, I marveled greatly. 7 But the angel said to me, “Why do you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her. 8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come. 9 This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; 10 they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while. 11 As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction. 12 And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings for one hour, together with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they hand over their power and authority to the beast. 14 They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.” The Word of the Lord. Thanks Be To God. Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free.He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David.Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation * by the forgiveness of their sins.In the tender compassion of our God * the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. The LessonsGenesis 41:1English Standard Version41 After two whole years, Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing by the Nile,Genesis 41:8English Standard Version8 So in the morning his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was none who could interpret them to Pharaoh.Genesis 41:14-24English Standard Version14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they quickly brought him out of the pit. And when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came in before Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 Joseph answered Pharaoh, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer.” 17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, in my dream I was standing on the banks of the Nile. 18 Seven cows, plump and attractive, came up out of the Nile and fed in the reed grass. 19 Seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and thin, such as I had never seen in all the land of Egypt. 20 And the thin, ugly cows ate up the first seven plump cows, 21 but when they had eaten them no one would have known that they had eaten them, for they were still as ugly as at the beginning. Then I awoke. 22 I also saw in my dream seven ears growing on one stalk, full and good. 23 Seven ears, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprouted after them, 24 and the thin ears swallowed up the seven good ears. And I told it to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me.” Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. A Song of Penitence(Kyrie Pantokrator)O Lord and Ruler of the hosts of heaven, * God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and of all their righteous offspring:You made the heavens and the earth, * with all their vast array. All things quake with fear at your presence; * they tremble because of your power. But your merciful promise is beyond all measure; * it surpasses all that our minds can fathom.O Lord, you are full of compassion, * long-suffering, and abounding in mercy. You hold back your hand; *you do not punish as we deserve. In your great goodness, Lord, you have promised forgiveness to sinners, * that they may repent of their sin and be saved. And now, O Lord, I bend the knee of my heart, * and make my appeal, sure of your gracious goodness.I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned, * and I know my wickedness only too well. Therefore I make this prayer to you: * Forgive me, Lord, forgive me.Do not let me perish in my sin, * nor condemn me to the depths of the earth. For you, O Lord, are the God of those who repent, * and in me you will show forth your goodness.Unworthy as I am, you will save me, in accordance with your great mercy, * and I will praise you without ceasing all the days of my life. For all the powers of heaven sing your praises, * and yours is the glory to ages of ages. Amen. 1 Corinthians 10:14-22English Standard Version14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? 19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 22 Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. The LessonsIsaiah 29:15-24 English Standard VersionAh, you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”You turn things upside down!Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, “He did not make me”;or the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?Is it not yet a very little while until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest? In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord, and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel. For the ruthless shall come to nothing and the scoffer cease, and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off,who by a word make a man out to be an offender, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right. Therefore thus says the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:“Jacob shall no more be ashamed, no more shall his face grow pale. For when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in his midst, they will sanctify my name;they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob and will stand in awe of the God of Israel. And those who go astray in spirit will come to understanding, and those who murmur will accept instruction.”Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. Lessons2 Kings 2:1-18English Standard Version2 Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. 3 And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”4 Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. 5 The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”6 Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 7 Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8 Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” 10 And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.” 11 And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 13 And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him opposite them, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. 16 And they said to him, “Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men. Please let them go and seek your master. It may be that the Spirit of the Lord has caught him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley.” And he said, “You shall not send.” 17 But when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, “Send.” They sent therefore fifty men. And for three days they sought him but did not find him. 18 And they came back to him while he was staying at Jericho, and he said to them, “Did I not say to you, ‘Do not go'?”1 Corinthians 4:1-7English Standard Version4 This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.6 I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. 7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it? The Word of the Lord. Thanks Be To God. 1Am I not free?Am I not an apostle?Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord?2If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you arethe seal of my apostleship in the Lord. 3This is my defense to those who would examine me.4Do we not have the right to eat and drink?5Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife,[a]as do the other apostles andthe brothers of the Lord andCephas?6Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living?7Who serves as a soldier at his own expense?Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? 8Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same?9For it is written in the Law of Moses,You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain. Is it for oxen that God is concerned?10Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was writtenfor our sake, becausethe plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop.11If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you?12If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless,we have not made use of this right, but we endure anythingrather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.13Do you not know thatthose who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings?14In the same way, the Lord commanded thatthose who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. 15ButI have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyonedeprive me of my ground for boasting.16For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. Fornecessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted witha stewardship.18What then is my reward? That in my preachingI may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
1Now concerning the matters about which you wrote:It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.2But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.3The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.4For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.5Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again,so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6Now as a concession, not a command, I say this.[a]7I wish that all wereas I myself am. Buteach has his own gift from God,one of one kind and one of another. 8To the unmarried and the widows I say thatit is good for them to remain single,as I am.9But if they cannot exercise self-control,they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

The PsalterPsalm 75Confitebimur tibi1We give you thanks, O God, we give you thanks, *calling upon your Name and declaring all your wonderful deeds.2“I will appoint a time,” says God; *“I will judge with equity.3Though the earth and all its inhabitants are quaking, *I will make its pillars fast.4I will say to the boasters, ‘Boast no more,' *and to the wicked, ‘Do not toss your horns;5Do not toss your horns so high, *nor speak with a proud neck.' ”6For judgment is neither from the east nor from the west, *nor yet from the wilderness or the mountains.7It is God who judges; *he puts down one and lifts up another.8For in the Lord's hand there is a cup, full of spiced and foaming wine, which he pours out, *and all the wicked of the earth shall drink and drain the dregs.9But I will rejoice for ever; *I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.10He shall break off all the horns of the wicked; *but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted. Psalm 76Notus in Judæa1In Judah is God known; *his Name is great in Israel.2At Salem is his tabernacle, *and his dwelling is in Zion.3There he broke the flashing arrows, *the shield, the sword, and the weapons of battle.4How glorious you are! Amen. Lessons2 Samuel 5:22-6:11English Standard Version22 And the Philistines came up yet again and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.6 David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim. 3 And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, 4 with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark.5 And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. 6 And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. 8 And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day. 9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord into the city of David. But David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household. Acts 17:16-34English Standard Version16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for“‘In him we live and move and have our being';as even some of your own poets have said,“‘For we are indeed his offspring.'29 Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, “We will hear you again about this.” 33 So Paul went out from their midst. 34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them. The Word of the Lord. Thanks Be To God. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. A Prayer of St. John ChrysostomAlmighty God, you have given us grace at this time, with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will grant their requests: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Exodus 20:1–6And God spoke all these words, saying,“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.“You shall have no other gods before me.“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.Romans 6:3–5Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. Matthew 5:20–22[Jesus said:] “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.' But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!' will be liable to the hell of fire. LessonsSirach 46:1-10New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition46 Joshua son of Nun was mighty in war and was the successor of Moses in the prophetic office. He became, as his name implies, a great savior of God's elect,to take vengeance on the enemies who rose against them, so that he might give Israel its inheritance.2 How glorious he was when he lifted his hands and brandished his sword against the cities!3 Who before him ever stood so firm? For he waged the wars of the Lord.4 Was it not through him that the sun stood still and one day became as long as two?5 He called upon the Most High, the Mighty One, when enemies pressed him on every side, and the great Lord answered him with hailstones of mighty power.6 He overwhelmed that nation in battle, and on the slope he destroyed his opponents,so that the nations might know his armament, because their battle was against the Lord, for he was a devoted follower of the Mighty One.7 And in the days of Moses he showed compassion, he and Caleb son of Jephunneh:they opposed the congregation, restrained the people from sin, and stilled their wicked grumbling.8 And these two alone were spared out of six hundred thousand infantry,to lead the people into their inheritance, the land flowing with milk and honey.9 The Lord gave Caleb strength, which remained with him in his old age,so that he went up to the hill country, and his children obtained it for an inheritance,10 so that all the Israelites might see how good it is to follow the Lord. 2 Corinthians 13English Standard Version13 This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 2 I warned those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again I will not spare them— 3 since you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. 4 For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! 6 I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. 7 But we pray to God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. 8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. 9 For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. Your restoration is what we pray for. 10 For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All the saints greet you.14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost The Collect: O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Old Testament: Haggai 1:15b-2:9 1In the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 2Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, 3Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? 4Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, 5according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear.6For thus says the Lord of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; 7and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the Lord of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of hosts. 9The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the Lord of hosts. Psalm: Psalm 145:1-5, 18-21 or Psalm 98 1 I will exalt you, O God my King, * and bless your Name for ever and ever. 2 Every day will I bless you * and praise your Name for ever and ever. 3 Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * there is no end to his greatness. 4 One generation shall praise your works to another * and shall declare your power. 5 I will ponder the glorious splendor of your majesty * and all your marvelous works. 18 The Lord is righteous in all his ways * and loving in all his works. 19 The Lord is near to those who call upon him, * to all who call upon him faithfully. 20 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; * he hears their cry and helps them. 21 The Lord preserves all those who love him, * but he destroys all the wicked. or 1 Sing to the Lord a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. 2 With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory. 3 The Lord has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. 4 He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 5 Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6 Sing to the Lord with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. 7 With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the Lord. 8 Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. 9 Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth. 10 In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity. Epistle: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17 1As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, 2not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. 3Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. 5Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? 13But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. 16Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, 17comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. Gospel: Luke 20:27-38 27Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him28and asked him a question, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. 29Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; 30then the second 31and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless.32Finally the woman also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.” 34Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage;35but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.36Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. 37And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.”

Welcome to Hope City Church! NEW If you are new to Hope City text “Welcome” to 502-754-3212 SERMON GUIDE Nehemiah 4:1-9 1 Sanballat was very angry when he learned that we were rebuilding the wall. He flew into a rage and mocked the Jews, 2saying in front of his friends and the Samarian army officers, “What does this bunch of poor, feeble Jews think they're doing? Do they think they can build the wall in a single day by just offering a few sacrifices? Do they actually think they can make something of stones from a rubbish heap—and charred ones at that?” 3Tobiah the Ammonite, who was standing beside him, remarked, “That stone wall would collapse if even a fox walked along the top of it!” 4Then I prayed, “Hear us, our God, for we are being mocked. May their scoffing fall back on their own heads, and may they themselves become captives in a foreign land! 5Do not ignore their guilt. Do not blot out their sins, for they have provoked you to anger here in front of the builders.” 6At last the wall was completed to half its height around the entire city, for the people had worked with enthusiasm. 7 But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites heard that the work was going ahead and that the gaps in the wall of Jerusalem were being repaired, they were furious. 8They all made plans to come and fight against Jerusalem and throw us into confusion. 9But we prayed to our God and guarded the city day and night to protect ourselves. A very good morning to you! It is Sunday morning, 1st May, 2022. And this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. If we go straight to the Revelation, the last book in the Bible, Jesus says:“He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.”Revelation 3:5Do you know that seven times, I have counted - seven times, Jesus speaks about overcoming. Now, that does not mean that we have arrived, no. It means we have to keep on running the race which is set before us. If we look at Philippians 3:12, this is what the word of God says. Paul says:“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.”But you know the good news is that we are not running this race alone. No, our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, is running this marathon with us, one step at a time, just like the bus driver that you will find on an ultra-marathon. He sets the pace. Now it is not an actual bus. It is a group of people that run with a man that they trust. He puts a little reed in his belt, behind him with a flag on it, and you follow after him. He knows what it will take to finish this ultra-marathon. He is the one who tells you when to stop, to have a drink of water or to have something to eat. He tells you when to walk, when to jog and then he tells you when to stop and have a rest.If you listen to the bus driver, if you obey him, he will get you over the finish line. I remember, often he would tell us to start singing when he saw that we were getting very tired. He would tell us to start swinging our arms around like a windmill getting the blood going, picking our legs up. He would sing songs, some of them were like nursery rhymes. He would keep the spirits up because he knew - he had been there before. Now, Jesus is our literal bus driver. He says, “If you obey Me, I will get you home. If you obey Me and My statutes, you will be over-comers.” And He will help us to make it right to the end.Today, try not to do it on your own because we can't make it on our own. Rather get onto that bus, get into that group of believers and let's run this race together, helping each other until we become complete overcomers. Have a wonderful Sunday as you contemplate on the race that you are running.Jesus bless you!Goodbye.

What is often missing from our understanding of the 10 commandments? Exodus 20:1-17 (EHV) Then God spoke all these words: 2I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt, where you were slaves. 3You shall have no other gods beside me. 4You shall not make any carved image for yourself or a likeness of anything in heaven above, or on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth. 5Do not bow down to them or be subservient to them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God. I follow up on the guilt of the fathers with their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren, if they also hate me. 6But I show mercy to thousands who love me and keep my commandments. 7You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not permit anyone who misuses his name to escape unpunished. 8Remember the Sabbath day by setting it apart as holy. 9Six days you are to serve and do all your regular work, 10but the seventh day shall be a sabbath rest to the Lord your God. Do not do any regular work, neither you, nor your sons or daughters, nor your male or female servants, nor your cattle, nor the alien who is residing inside your gates, 11for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. In this way the Lord blessed the seventh day and made it holy. 12Honor your father and your mother so that you may spend many days on the land that the Lord your God is giving to you. 13You shall not commit murder. 14You shall not commit adultery. 15You shall not steal. 16You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor. VI. The Restoration of the AltarAs psychologists know, when defenses are disrupted there is a period of real disorientation, accompanied by fear, guilt, and usually vacillation between anxiety and depression. 2The process discussed here is different only in that defenses are not being disrupted but reinterpreted, even though it may be experienced as the same thing.80 3In the reinterpretation of defenses, they are not disrupted, but their use for attack is lost. 4Since this means that they can be used only one way, they become much stronger and also much more dependable. 5They no longer oppose the Atonement, but greatly facilitate it.2 The Atonement can only be accepted within you. 2You may perceive it largely as external, and this will make your experience of it minimal. 3You can be shown the chalice without accepting it for yourself.81 4This is due to the improper use of the defense of externalization.82 5Do not fail to appreciate, however, how remarkable your progress can be in this respect. 6You may perceive the chalice at first as a vessel of some sort whose purpose is uncertain. 7Even then, however, you can notice that the inside is gold, while the outside, though shiny, is silver. 8This is a recognition of the fact that the inner part is more precious than the outer side, even though both are resplendent.3 The reinterpretation of defenses is essential to break open the inner light. 2Since the separation, defenses have been used almost entirely to defend yourself against the Atonement, and thus maintain your separation. 3You generally see this as a need to protect the body from external intrusion. 4Fantasies about the body arise from the erroneous belief that the body can be used as a means for obtaining Atonement.4 Perceiving the body as the temple is only the first step in correcting this kind of distortion.83 2Seeing the body as a temple alters part of the misperception, but not all of it. 3It does recognize that the concept of Atonement in physical terms is not appropriate. 4But the next step is to realize that a temple is not a building at all. 5Its real holiness lies in the inner altar around which the building is built.5 The inappropriate emphasis which people have put on beautiful church buildings is a sign of their own fear of Atonement, and an unwillingness to reach the altar itself. 2The real beauty of the temple cannot be seen with the physical eye. 3The spiritual eye, on the other hand, cannot see the building at all, but it perceives the altar within with perfect clarity. 4This is because the spiritual eye has perfect vision.6 For perfect effectiveness, the chalice of the Atonement belongs at the center of the inner altar, where it undoes the separation and restores the wholeness of the mind. 2Before the separation, the mind was invulnerable to fear, because fear did not exist. 3Both the separation and the fear were miscreations of the mind, which have to be undone. 4This is what the Bible means by the restoration of the temple.84 5It does not mean the restoration of the building, but it does mean the opening of the altar to receive the Atonement. 6This heals the separation, and places within you the one defense against all errors which can make you perfectly invulnerable.7 The acceptance of the Atonement by everyone is only a matter of time. 2In fact, both time and matter were made for this purpose. 3This appears to contradict free will, because of the inevitability of the decision. 4If you review the idea carefully, however, you will realize that this is not true. 5Everything is limited in some way by the manner of its creation. 6Free will can temporize and is capable of enormous procrastination. 7But it cannot depart entirely from its Creator, Who sets limits on its ability to miscreate by virtue of its own real purpose.8 The misuse of will engenders a situation which, in the extreme, becomes altogether intolerable. 2Pain thresholds can be high, but they are not limitless. 3Eventually, everybody begins to recognize, however dimly, that there must be a better way.85 4As this recognition is more firmly established, it becomes a perceptual turning point. 5This ultimately reawakens the spiritual eye, simultaneously weakening the investment in physical sight. 6The alternating investment in the two types or levels of perception is usually experienced as conflict for a long time, and can become very acute. 7But the outcome is as certain as God.9 The spiritual eye literally cannot see error, and merely looks for Atonement. 2All of the solutions which the physical eyes seek dissolve in its sight. 3The spiritual eye, which looks within, recognizes immediately that the altar has been defiled and needs to be repaired and protected. 4Perfectly aware of the right defense, it passes over all others, looking past error to truth. 5Because of the real strength of its vision, it pulls the will into its own service and forces the mind to concur.10 This reestablishes the true power of the will, and makes it increasingly unable to tolerate delay. 2The mind then realizes, with growing certainty, that delay is only a way of increasing unnecessary pain, which it need not tolerate at all. 3The pain threshold drops accordingly, and the mind becomes increasingly sensitive to what it would once have regarded as very minor intrusions of discomfort.11 The children of God are entitled to perfect comfort, which comes from a sense of perfect trust. 2Until they achieve this, they will waste themselves and their true creative powers on useless attempts to make themselves more comfortable by inappropriate means. 3But the real means is already provided, and does not involve any effort on their part at all. 4Their egocentricity usually misinterprets this as personally insulting, an interpretation which obviously arises from their misperception of themselves. 5Egocentricity and communion cannot coexist. 6Even the terms themselves are contradictory.8612 The Atonement is the only gift which is worthy of being offered to the altar of God. 2This is because of the inestimable value of the altar itself. 3It was created perfect and is entirely worthy of receiving perfection. 4God is lonely without His Sons, and they are lonely without Him. 5Remember the poem which begins:6And God stepped out on space,And he looked around and said,“I’m lonely—I’ll make me a world.”877The world was a way of healing the separation, and the Atonement is the guarantee that the device will ultimately do so.88

#BattlingDeception Ken Thornberg Founder of Freedom Encounters shares how to pray against the spirit of deception. 2 Thessalonians 2:3Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of [b]sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits [c]as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 5Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7For the [d]mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only [e]He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. #Texit #2A Matt of the Matt Long show is live in Austin TX for the Texas Legislative session. Renewal – Life Lessons From Nehemiah Courage– Neh. 4-6 By Louie Marsh, 5-11-2008 SHOW CARTOONS ON CUE I Need Courage when I … 1) Face my OUTWARD opposition. VERBAL ABUSE: When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall he exploded in anger, vilifying the Jews. In the company of his Samaritan cronies and military he let loose: "What are these miserable Jews doing? Do they think they can get everything back to normal overnight? Make building stones out of make-believe?" At his side, Tobiah the Ammonite jumped in and said, "That's right! What do they think they're building? Why, if a fox climbed that wall, it would fall to pieces under his weight." Nehemiah 4:1-3 (MSG) How I Should Respond: PUBLIC PRAYER “4Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives. 5Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders.” (Nehemiah 4:4–5, ESV) Continuing the work with all MY HEART. “6So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.” (Nehemiah 4:6, ESV) PLANNING TO ATTACK & CONFUSE: “7But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry. 8And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it.” (Nehemiah 4:7–8, ESV) How I Should Respond: Response: PRAYER & ACTION “9And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.” (Nehemiah 4:9, ESV) 2) Deal with my INTERNAL opposition. GREED: “4And there were those who said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards. 5Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children are as their children. Yet we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but it is not in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.”” (Nehemiah 5:4–5, ESV) How I Should Respond: ANGER & REFLECTION “6I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words. 7I took counsel with myself, and I brought charges against the nobles and the officials. I said to them, “You are exacting interest, each from his brother.” And I held a great assembly against them” (Nehemiah 5:6–7, ESV) CONFRONTATION “7…and I brought charges against the nobles and the officials. I said to them, “You are exacting interest, each from his brother.” And I held a great assembly against them 8and said to them, “We, as far as we are able, have bought back our Jewish brothers who have been sold to the nations, but you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us!” They were silent and could not find a word to say. 9So I said, “The thing that you are doing is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies?” (Nehemiah 5:7a–9, ESV) 3) Fighting to STAY FOCUSED on the mission. “2Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together at Hakkephirim in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to do me harm.” (Nehemiah 6:2, ESV) If you get distracted you’ll say OH NO! “3And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” 4And they sent to me four times in this way, and I answered them in the same manner.” (Nehemiah 6:3–4, ESV) Refuse to get focused on SELF – stay on mission! “5In the same way Sanballat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. 6In it was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Geshem also says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall. And according to these reports you wish to become their king. 7And you have also set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, ‘There is a king in Judah.’ And now the king will hear of these reports. So now come and let us take counsel together.” 8Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind.” 9For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands.” (Nehemiah 6:5–9, ESV)

Hi, here's another short yoga practice. This is a standing practice I call, "Gentle Yoga for Healthy Joints". It has a video version for those of you who are more visual on my Yogi MD YouTube channel. The link is in the show notes. Before beginning, make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes, you have water nearby, and if you need extra support today, stand next to a sturdy chair without wheels or wall. Shoes are optional and remember, never do anything that causes pain.Pain is sharpness, numbness, burning or stabbing sensations. This is your practice and you decide what is right for your body.Let's begin in Mountain Pose first, standing. Stack your joints so that your ankles are underneath your knees, your knees are underneath your hips, your hips are underneath your shoulders. And if you take a line and draw it down the middle of your ear, it lines up with the center of your shoulder.Make sure your gaze is forward, your shoulders are relaxed away from your ears, and your neck is nice and long.Inhale, set your intention for your practice.Exhale to let it go.Let's focus on breathing for energy.Inhale, thinking about increasing your energy from the bottom of your feet to the top of your head.Exhale, releasing tension from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet.Imagine your inhale sending energy, oxygen to all of your muscles, all of your cells, and exhaling relaxation from the top of your head and out through your toes. And now either place your hands on your hips or you can interlace your hands behind your back.Begin gentle head circles, bringing your chin down towards your chest as you exhale and lifting your chin gently towards the ceiling as you inhale.Let's do 10 in this direction first. And be careful not to let your head fall back too far.and 5-4-3-2-1Change directions 10 times beginning now.5-4-3-2-1Now release your hands down by your sides a2nd let's begin simple shrugs. Inhale slide your shoulder blades up your back. Exhale glide your shoulder blades down your back2-3-4-5Do five more at your own pace. And let's change this motion by relaxing your shoulders, relaxing your arms. Nice, strong Mountain Pose. Don't lock your knees. And let's begin squeezing the shoulder blades towards one another on the exhale, being careful not to arch your back and on your inhale, releasing the squeeze. Perform a total of 10Slowly, mindfully, make the motion flow.Use your breath. And relax this movement.Lift your arms to shoulder height.Think strong arms from fingertip to shoulder to opposite shoulder to opposite fingertips.Begin waking up the muscles in your arms. Circle forward and make them as wide or as shallow as you like, 10 times. Don't hold your breath. And now go backwards.Slowly bring your arms down by your sides. Take a breath in and exhale.Lift your arms forward to shoulder height. Relax your shoulders away from your ears. And begin criss crossing your arms. Alternate which arm criss crosses over the other each time for a total of 10 times. As you open your arms, inhale, as you bring your arms forward, exhale. In 5-4-3-2-1, release your arms down by your sides.Turn your palms forward.Lift your arms up slightly. Exhale. Inhale, touch your shoulders. Exhale to lengthen your arms.Let's do this a total of 10 times.Halfway there. And release. This is a lovely exercise, simple shoulder touches when you're feeling tension. You can think about releasing tension through your fingertips when you release on the exhale. Now with your arms down by your sides, let's begin warming up the muscles around the wrists. Lengthen your fingers all the way through your fingertips, widen your fingers away from each other. On your inhale, curl your fingers in towards the sides of your body and up, keeping your arms long, and on your exhale, release the curl.Press your palms towards your floor, pointing your fingertips away from your body.10 times breathing and going slowly.Almost there. And release that motion. Now bring your arms up to shoulder height with your fingertips pointing straight ahead. This is a side to side motion with your hands only.On your inhale, turn your thumbs in towards one another. On your exhale, point your thumbs away from one another and your pinkies away from one another. Inhale, turning your hands in towards one another thumbs towards one another. Exhale, hands away from one another pinkies away from one another.Think about your hands on a flat surface sliding side to side.Keep your arms strong. Your shoulders, neck, jaw without tension. And that should be about 10. Release your arms down by your sides.Let's focus on our fingers. On your inhale, curl your fingers into a fist. And on your exhale, release the fist stretching your fingers all the way to your fingertips.Go back and forth, about 10 times at your own pace.Keep your shoulders, face, soft. This is yet another good exercise for when you're feeling tense. Inhaling tension and exhaling relaxation. And now release. Wiggle your fingers and let's move our focus to our spines. Keeping your spine healthy is very important. So let's do modified cat cow.Take a very slight and gentle bend in your knees sitting back. Feel your weight shifting into your heels and into the back of your body. Place your hands on your thighs above your knees.Only your back will move your arms and your legs will stay pretty stable, just like a table. Take an inhale, press your belly forward, lift your chest and gaze to the ceiling. On your Exhale, tuck your chin, round your back like a Halloween cat and tuck your tailbone, squeezing your navel to your spine. Inhale, flowing forward into Cow Pose, lifting your tailbone, pressing your belly forward, lifting your chest and gaze. Exhale, making the opposite C-shape, Cat.Keep going. Breathe.Make sure there's no tension in your shoulders. And that should be approximately 10.Stand nice and tall. Place your hands on your hips and step your feet out wider than shoulder width. You can make this stance as wide or as shallow as you need in this moment.Keeping your hands on your hips, let's begin slow flowing mindful pelvic circles. When you bring your pelvis forward, inhale, when you bring your pelvis back, exhale. Go around in the smooth circles, coordinating movement with breath about 10 times. And 5-4-3-2-1, reverse the circlesand 5-4-3-2-1Beautiful, bring this motion to stillness and notice how you feel in your lower back, hip area, inner and outer thighs.Step back into mountain pose with your feet stacked underneath you and let's work a little bit on balance. This is where you may wish to use the support of a chair or a wall if you need it in this moment.Make sure you can feel your weight equally on both feet.Focus on the contact your feet make in your shoes, or directly on the floor. There are five contact points under the foot under the ball mount of the big toe, under the ball mount of the little toe, inner heel, middle heel and outer heel. Distribute your weight equally on all five contact points of your right foot and your left foot. Become more aware of engaging your muscles to support your balance, from the bottom of your feet, up to your legs. Wrap the muscles in your thighs around the bones in your thighs. Point your tailbone down at the floor. Keep the front of your hips pointing forward. Lift the navel in towards the spine. Lift your pelvic floor muscles and engage your deep abdominal muscles by gently bringing your navel in towards your spine to support your back.Lift your upper body out of your pelvis by lengthening the front of your abdomen, the right and left side of your torso, and engaging your back muscles. Keep your shoulders relaxed away from your ears. Your shoulder blades are down away from your ears and slightly in towards one another. Engage the whole circumference of the muscles and your neck to support the weight of your head. Relax the muscles in your face.Don't forget to breathe and make sure that you are not locking your knees. They should be softened to just a touch. Now shift your weight over to your left leg. Pick up your right foot, bending your right knee, and begin imagining that there is a paintbrush attached to your right kneecap. Draw big circles out to the side, five times, keeping the rest of your body as still as you can, focusing this movement around sensations in your hip.Draw the biggest circles you can.And now reverse, drawing the circles inward. And release. Place your right foot on the floor. Make sure you're balanced on both feet again, notice breathe. And now shift your way over to your right leg. Let's pick up their left foot, left knee. Attach your imaginary paintbrush, paint big circles out to the side away from your body.Big slow circles. And now draw them inward and place your left foot on the floor back to Mountain Pose. Notice.Breathe.And now let's do leg swings. Shift your weight over to the left again. And this is a way to modify this. You can either choose to tap your foot forward and back in a swing motion. Or you can just swing the whole leg forward and back. Let's do 10 breathe evenly, smoothly. 5-4-3-2-1 and release your right foot, shift over to the right, pick up your left foot and either tap or swing. And know this, one side is not like the other, so you may need to modify on this side or not. It is okay. And 3-2-1 and release your foot.Stepping into Mountain Pose. Noticing. And now let's move on to lateral swings. Shift your weight over to your left leg and you can tap side to side across the front of your body across the front of your left leg with your right foot. Or you can simply swing your leg side to side. Let's begin.5-4-3-2-1 Release back to Mountain Pose. Inhale and exhale, shift your weight to your right leg and begin tapping or swinging with the left leg from your hip, 10 times, breathing.5-4-3-2-1 and pause, come back to Mountain Pose. Inhale and exhale.Bring your feet close together as close as you can. Take a slight bend in your knees sitting back weight in your heels. Place your hands right above your kneecaps and draw tiny, tiny circles with your knees in 10 tiny circles in one direction now.Change directions. And release.Step back to Mountain Pose. Now let's focus only on your toes. Keep making contact with your shoes or the floor with your five contact points underneath your foot. And inhale to lift and spread your toes only. Exhale to slowly bring them down10 timesIn 5-4-3-2-1 releasing. Keep your eyes focused on a point ahead of you far ahead either the wall across the room or the floor far ahead to help with your balance. Your vision is very important for your balance. And let's lift the heels away from the floor on your inhale. And exhale to descend with control slowly heels back down to floor 2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 and 10.Step your feet out slightly wider than shoulder width apart. And let's roll our feet away from one another on your exhale and inhale to roll your feet in towards one another. So you're rolling on the bottoms of the feet out and in, breathing.Just a couple more. And stop. Bring your feet back underneath you nice tall Mountain Pose. Let's finish with a whole body stretch.Inhale to bring your arms up and out to the sides. And either placing your fingertips on your shoulders or interlacing your fingers over your head. Flip your palms over. If you have your fingers interlaced, press your arms long up to the ceiling keeping your arms next to the sides of your head. And now stretch over to the right, pressing your left hip slightly away from you. Breathing in and out.Inhale.The next breath out, straighten up. And now hinge over to the left, stretching the right side of your body.Breathing in and out.Inhale.On your next exhale, straighten up.Inhale.Exhale to release your arms down by your sides.Inhale to bring your arms up and out to the sides. Exhale, bring your palms together in front of your chest. Keep your shoulders relaxed, your face relaxed.Inhale and exhale to complete practice. Thank you for joining me. Worship audio from March 4, Lent 3B. Bulletin here or below:Welcome to Shepherd of the Lakes! We’re here to shepherd Christ’s flock and seek the lost sheep by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with all. Come, let us worship! For your convenience, in the back corner of the sanctuary there is a room for any parents with children in need of a quiet place. The restrooms are located on the lower level. Please ask if you have any further questions or concerns. Lord Jesus, zeal for your Father’s house consumed you. May that same fervor consume us also, who are your spiritual dwelling through faith, that we may offer the AMEN.Faith & Forgiveness:People are also warned that the term faith does not mean simply a knowledge of a history, such as the ungodly and devil have [James 2:19]. Rather, it means a faith that believes, not merely the history, but also the effect of the history. In other words, it believes this article: the forgiveness of sins. We have grace, righteousness, and forgiveness of sins through Christ. The person who knows that he has a Father who is gracious to him through Christ truly knows God [John 14:7]. He also knows that God cares for him [1 Peter 5:7], and he calls upon God [Romans 10:13]. In a word, he is not without God, as are the heathen. For devils and the ungodly are not able to believe this article: the forgiveness of sins. Hence, they hate God as an enemy [Romans 8:7] and do not call Him [Romans 3:11–12] and expect no good from Him. 26 Augustine also warns his readers about the word faith and teaches that the term is used in the Scriptures, not for the knowledge that is in the ungodly, but for the confidence that consoles and encourages the terrified mind.Apology to the Augsburg Confession, Article 1 (Concordia p. 43) Because He Knew: He Put His House in OrderJesus knew all along he was going to die. That was the eternal plan of the Father, that the holy Son of God would suffer and die for a world of sinners. ...In preparation for that day, Jesus cleansed the Temple during Holy Week, just as he did at the beginning of his ministry. How does the cleansing of the Temple guide our Christian lives & work today? OPENING HYMN: 401 – Your Works, Not Mine, O ChristLITURGY: Common Service with Holy Communion, p. 15Please rise.PRAYER OF THE DAY:M: Almighty God, look with favor on your humble servants and stretch out the right hand of your power to defend us against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. The WordFIRST READING: Exodus 20:1-17The Law, given by the LORD our God, demands perfect obedience:Then God spoke all these words: 2I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt, where you were slaves. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!SECOND READING: Romans 8:1-10The flesh has no strength to free itself from the condemnations of God’s law; but through Christ, God proclaims freedom:So then, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3Indeed, what the law was unable to do, because it was weakened by the flesh, God did, when he sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to deal with sin. God condemned sin in his flesh, 4so that the righteous decree of the law would be fully satisfied in us who are not walking according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. 5To be sure, those who are in harmony with the sinful flesh think about things the way the sinful flesh does, and those in harmony with the spirit think about things the way the spirit does. 6Now, the way the sinful flesh thinks results in death, but the way the spirit thinks results in life and peace. 7For the mindset of the sinful flesh is hostile to God, since it does not submit to God’s law, and in fact, it cannot. 8Those who are in the sinful flesh cannot please God. 9But you are not in the sinful flesh but in the spirit, if indeed God’s Spirit lives in you. And if someone does not have the Spirit of Christ, that person does not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, but your spirit is alive because of righteousness. THEME VERSE: John 3:14-15Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. Thanks be to God.GOSPEL READING: John 2:13-22Jesus is serious about his Word, his dwelling-place, and what goes on there:Glory be to you, O Lord!13The Jewish Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers sitting at tables. 15He made a whip of cords and drove everyone out of the temple courts, along with the sheep and oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16To those selling doves he said, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a place of business!” 17His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18So the Jews responded, “What sign are you going to show us to prove you can do these things?” 19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” 20The Jews said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple! And you are going to raise it in three days?” 21But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body. 22When Jesus was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and what Jesus had said. This is the Gospel of our Lord Jesus.Praise be to you, O Christ!HYMN OF THE DAY: 456 – Forth in Your Name, O Lord, I GoSERMON based on John 2: Jesus Promises to Keep Setting His House in OrderCONFESSION OF FAITH: Nicene Creed, p. 31OFFERINGPRAYER & LORD’S PRAYERThe sacramentFor our Holy Communion practice, please see the purple sheet in the pew racks.COMMUNION LITURGY: p. 33DISTRIBUTION HYMN: 532 – God is Here! Psalm 1031Call to praiseDavid is probably an old man and is looking back at life (verse 5 is an old man's statement). There are interesting parallels with Psalm 42 & 43. Speaking to yourself and instructing your soul rather than listening to it. “The main problem in the whole matter of “spiritual depression” in a sense is this – we allow our “self” to talk to us instead of “talking to ourself.”” (Martin Lloyd-Jones) 2-5Do the mathThere are six bullet-points. David remembers, first of all, forgiveness. Imagine this adulterer-murderer contemplating all he has been forgiven. God forgives, heals, redeems, crowns, satisfies and renews. That last statement brings into focus the thinking and feeling of an old man. When I do the math on God's benefits to me, my strength is renewed.6-10Think backDavid broadens His thinking here to acknowledge that God's goodness is not merely personal, but that this is the experience of the nation. I tend to thinking of “complaining and murmuring” when I think of Israel in connection with Moses… and yet God has not dealt with the nation according to their sins… and that is true of me.11-13How much? That much! This is perhaps the heart of the Psalm, which God's might, forgiveness and lovingkindness are expressed in childlike terms… How high… the highest I can think of… how far? As far as they could possibly go. How much? A motherly father… “this much” (spreading arms as wide as they go).14-19My dad is biggerMan's frailty and short life-span is contrasted with God's might and eternality. God knows who we are and what our weaknesses are. He is altogether different from us and with all His eternal goodness, He looks after us.20-22Call to praiseDavid entreats all of creation to join his soul in praising God
Isaiah 43: 1-5Do not be afraid, I will save you. I have called you by name - you are mine. When you pass through deep waters, I will be with you; your troubles will not overwhelm you. When you pass through fire, you will not get burned; the hard trials that come will not hurt you. For I am the Lord your God - because you are precious to me and because I love you and give you honor, do not be afraid - I am with you. When we're lonely - when we feel betrayed by friends, misunderstood, all alone, even surrounded by people who are supposed to know us and care for us the most - we can take comfort in knowing Jesus understands the full breadth of what we're experiencing, because he experienced it too. Peter denied knowing him. His disciples fell asleep when he was most vulnerable and in crisis. He was lied about, misunderstood, rejected and scorned.Crappy friends will happen to all of us at some point in our life. Don't despair, pay attention!
