Unsure how to practically prioritize your mental health? What are tangible ways you can check-in + gauge your current mental health? Do you spiritually bypass your mental health struggles? Sometimes we gaslight ourselves when it comes to spirituality + mental health. Here’s how...   Debra Fileta is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in dating, marriage, and relationship issues, as well as mental health disorders. She was on episode 97 of The Refined Collective. We talked about dating myths, and now she’s back for round two. She’s the author of True Love Dates, Choosing Marriage, and Love in Every Season! Her new book Are You Really OK? just released! Today, we’re talking about how to assess your own mental health and how to pursue help when it’s needed.   Mental Health 101 Emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical health all go hand-in-hand.   “Even good things cause an emotional reaction and stress. So the launch of a book— even though it’s an amazing experience— contributes to your stress… good things can lead to burnout.” - Debra     Emotional Health Check Up We take physical health check ups seriously, but are we doing the same for our mental health? How to have an emotional health check-in? 1. Expressive writing: write down your emotions, no matter how messy. Studies show people who regularly do this experience fewer symptoms of stress.   “If we don’t take the time to stop and really process what is happening underneath, that pressure is going to build until it comes out in a way that we don’t have control over.” - Debra     Spiritual Health Check Up 3 Spiritual Health Check-up Questions to Ask yourself:: 1. What people or experiences have shaped my view of God? 2. What are some words that I’ve believed about God that aren’t actually based on truth? 3. What characteristics of God— as revealed through his word— are most significant to me and my experience?   Mental Health Check Up   “Your mental health is not a sign of your character, it’s a sign of your chemistry” - Debra   Notice the patterns that contribute to your anxiety Do you feel restless? Irritable? Soreness? Difficulty sleeping? Breathless? Notice the patterns that contribute to your depression Are you feeling sadness or apathy? Decreased pleasure in all the things you normally enjoy? An absent or uncontrollable appetite? Fatigue? If you have any of these symptoms for two weeks, you can be diagnosed with depression.  How to Say No In an exclusive Patreon interview, Debra shares… How to get to the root of why you feel the need to say “yes” always How to set healthy boundaries in your life Join Patreon and get access to this and dozens of other exclusive videos/interviews. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the Mattsons invited Debra Fileta to talk about her new book, Are you Really Okay Getting Real About Who You Are, How You’re Doing, and Why It Matters. As you may or may not know, at Living Wholehearted, we are passionate about bridging the gap between mental health and clinical research and what God’s word has to say. We specialize in leaders because we know leaders are human too! According to Lifeway Research, 23% of pastors acknowledge they have personally struggled with a mental illness. 49% of pastors say they rarely or never speak to their congregation about mental illness. 65% of churchgoing family members of those with mental illness want their church to talk openly about mental illness. Historically, the church has not had the greatest reputation at responding well to mental illness or understanding the needs, oversimplifying and sometimes over spiritualizing and causing more harm.   Debra Fileta is a licensed professional counselor, podcaster, and the author of True Love Dates, Choosing Marriage, and Love in Every Season. Almost every day, Carla of @gardenplot.57 treats us to vibrant photos of her cut flower garden, homemade skincare products, and dozens of veggies she’s growing in her backyard garden in Cornwall, England. In this episode, Carla gives tips on how to start (and maintain) a garden in a small space, and shares tips on DIY gardening projects we can do right now to get a jump on the season. Carla and I bonded over the amazing book “Floret Farm's A Year in Flowers: Designing Gorgeous Arrangements for Every Season” by Erin Benzakein, an amazing resource that’ll inspire you to step up your flower arranging (and flower growing) game. Carla also shares the secret to getting kids interested in gardening and how to lure them away from the X-Box and towards the garden box.    Carla’s guide to gardening in a small space:  Utilize your patio by planting pots with salad greens, herbs, and dwarf tomatoes.  Go high! Make use of vertical space by creating vertical planters. Archways and trellises allow you to grow “up,” and make use of tiny amounts of space for things like beans, peas, cucumbers and tomatoes.  More gardening resources recommended by Carla and Brionna: Huw Richards YouTube channel and book, “Grow Food for Free” Sandria of A Beautiful Nest Misilla of Learn to Grow Adam Yn Yr Ardd, a wildly talented Welsh gardener Carla's blog Carla's Instagram TheBriGarden Instagram   If you’re new to Bri Books, leave a review of Bri Books on Apple Podcasts, and listen to Bri Books on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and SoundCloud! New Zealander, Aimee Walker—pastor, author, Bible Study writer and teacher—first came on my show early on in December of 2019. She recently launched her first book: But I Flourish: Learning to Thrive in Every Season and I wanted to share some of what you will gain from reading it,  as well as introduce you to Aimee in case you missed her the first time round.  Aimee knows that we all are called to mentor and to be mentored by someone who is just a little further down the road in their spiritual maturity, and she wished she had had someone in her life ten years ago while wrestling with some of these issues in her walk with God. Her prayer is that her book will encourage those women who may be struggling in similar areas.  Some of my favorite parts had to do with "living loved," looking at my circumstances through the character of God, and reflecting on the difference between resignation and surrender. (And about 27 more good points.) You can purchase your copy of "But I Flourish: Learn to Thrive in Every Season" on Amazon. Welcome back, Aimee! Thanks again for your time and ministry. You can find Aimee here: https://www.aimeewalker.co.nz/   And her Bible Studies here:   https://joyfullifemagazine.com/product-category/bible-studies/       Order your copy of The Joyful Life Magazine today! Spring Issue is now available for preorder (and I'm grateful to have a few words included.)     In case you didn't try Aimee's recipe for Caramel Slice last time around, I'll repeat it below. Let me know if you make it and send me a pic! Aimee's Caramel Slice Recipe "It's not quick but, boy, is it worth it!"    Ingredient List:   Base  1 cup butter 2/3 cup sugar 1 egg, lightly beaten 2/3 cup plain flour (if using a gluten-free flour you may want to use closer to 1 cup) 1/2 cup desiccated coconut  pinch salt   Caramel   11 tbsp. butter 1 cup brown sugar 4 tbsp golden syrup  1 tin sweetened condensed milk 4 tbsp plain flour   Icing   7 oz. dark chocolate (I use 85% cocoa solids) 3 tbsp butter   Method:   Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease and line a slice tin with parchment paper.   Cream the butter and sugar together until thick and pale. Beat the egg in and then add in the flour, coconut, and salt. Beat until well combined. Spread the mix in an even layer into your prepared tin and then bake for 18 minutes. Remove the base from the oven.   While the base is cooking, make your caramel by melting all the ingredients in a saucepan/pot over medium heat. Stir continually to avoid burning on the bottom until the butter has melted and the sugar is dissolved. Pour it over the hot base and then return to the oven for another 10 minutes.   Remove from the oven and then cool in the tin before icing.   To make the icing, gently melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water, stirring gently to combine. Pour over the top of the caramel and place in the fridge to set. Cut into slices and serve. (store the slice in the fridge)

Guest Introduction: This is Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast episode 31. I’m Cindy MacMillan and today’s guest is Madison. Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. Each week, join Cindy MacMillan as she interviews coaches, spiritual explorers and celebrants from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well.   Welcome back to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. Thank you for listening and this is a really special heartfelt episode. I heard Madison on The Tendrils of Grief podcast and the episode was titled My Dad and I Were Best Friends - Coping After Losing Your Dad.  So, Madison is with us today to continue telling her story. Welcome to the podcast Madison. Here’s a glimpse of our conversation: (01:24) My dad was probably one of the best people that I ever knew. He was, he was the kind of person who would laugh at his own jokes and he really loved me and my mom a lot.   (02:02) It wasn't really something that kind of hit me until like maybe a month or two later I was very confused and I felt very lost. It was something that really hit me really terribly emotionally.  (02:41) I was 14 and I was kind of ignorant to a lot of the things that were going on in the world. And I always thought that life was like, oh, sunshine and unicorns. But after he died, it just kind of made me realize that life's completely unfair and that I always thought that bad things happen to bad people, but then I kind of realized that bad things happen to good people too.  (05:26) I felt like they were very distant and they just kinda didn't care. I think that's the best way I can describe it. They just didn't care.   (10:28) Good question. I think, there's this movie, it's a Disney movie ONWARD.  (11:23) I know it feels like the end of the world right now, and that you're sad and you don't want to do anything and that you feel angry at everyone for nothing. And you want to just lash out and talk badly about people behind their backs, but you know, that's not the right thing to do. Guest Introduction: This is Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast episode 30. I’m Cindy MacMillan and today’s guest is Dora Carpenter. Welcome back to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast and thank you for listening, and being here today. Whether you are a long-time listener or this is your first exposure to the podcast. I really do appreciate you. Dora Carpenter is a certified professional coach and founder of the Institute of Professional Grief Coaching and program director of the From Grief to Gratitude Coach Certification Program, an International Coaching Federation (ICF) accredited program.  Working many years in the death care industry birthed her passion for grief coaching.  As coach trainer, author, speaker, and mentor, she has appeared on various media outlets. This is a special episode for me because today’s guest has been my Coach and Mentor as I have been going through the From Grief to Gratitude Coach Certification Program. So I am feeling all warm and fuzzy. Here’s a glimpse of our conversation: (02:07) That's a wonderful question, actually, Cindy, I love that exploring the seasons of life. And when I think about it, I just have so many perspectives just on the term seasons, because I think I equate it all to the word change, which to me is just the common denominator in life. Whether in business or professionally or personally, it just to me indicates that the natural ebb and flow of life in general, but more importantly, then the change or the seasons is how we respond to them or how we react to them. Do we learn from them? Do we grow from them? Do we look at them? I think every season has goodies. So, what's the experience. What's the message? (06:46) And it was during those aftercare appointments that families wanted to talk, they wanted to share. They wanted to share with me about their loved ones. They wanted to look at scrapbooks. And when I would return to the office, the following day, I was pretty much always chastised for spending more than the required length of time in the home. And so, what I realized was that the families really needed us more after what we call task mode. (09:00) That's a great question. And they are extremely heightened and even more so this year, but it's a time when it's supposed to be a happy time, a joyous time, family togetherness, the sights, the sounds, the smell of the holiday, but when one's hope, dreams and expectations have been shattered, then it's not so much of a happy time for them. (14:48) When that family circle has been broken, you might be low on energy. You may not have any holiday spirit. You may actually be eligible for an Academy Award for just pretending to be okay, let family members and others know that I may not. I may not attend the traditional Thanksgiving. Well, you may not be able to attend due to the pandemic but let them know what you feel comfortable doing, limit again, those number of commitments. And it's important to know that it's okay to say no, even if the tradition is via Zoom, if you don't feel up to it, it's okay to say no. (23:14) That's my newest passion project because there's little or no grief education in corporate America and is as you know, from class, that medical students don't even have grief education as a part of their required curriculum. So when corporate America gives us three to five days off after losing a loved one, what that means is you're supposed to return to that office space as a fully functioning employee. And for those who have lost loved ones, they know that that's really not possible. (26:28) You want me to go all the way back? You know what though, honestly, I would share my mantra for life. And my mantra for life is this, please know that everything in life is temporary, including life itself. So decide to say yes to the gift of now, because whether you're 18 or whether you're 98 or whether you're 108, decide to say yes to the gift of now, the present, that's why they call it a gift because that's all we really have.  Resources Mentioned: The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Thank you for listening today. You are in for a special treat. Bettina was made in Greece, assembled in Australia and is a direct import to the United States and is a proud American citizen.  She has traveled extensively and is married to a man from a culture different to her own.  She is a mother and understands that all people are unique. Bettina is a Wedding Officiant & Civil Celebrant and has appeared on Good Morning America, in Martha Stewart Weddings and countless blogs and publications. Weddings by Bettina revels in telling your story with humor and dignity.   Here’s a glimpse of our conversation: (02:17) When I got married 17 years ago, in fact, I did think like a lot of other brides who are pronounced Mr. and Mrs. at the end of the ceremony, that I would indeed go down to the Births, Deaths and Marriages and do all those things that are required to change your name and something in me, it was almost, maybe it's my intuition or maybe it was something that is deeply important to me, my identity as a Greek person, given that I was born in Athens told me not to. (03:49) I moved to the United States on June 21, 2001, just prior to, September 11, 2001. And I was marveling at our four seasons here. I grew to love the bitterly cold winter of New York City because I had not experienced the true differentiation and I love music as well. So, while I'm talking to you, I'm thinking of Vivaldi's “The Four Seasons” and how there those four different demarcations are exquisite. (14:51) Number one, first of all, after we've gotten all of the details of where the ceremony is taking place, what time, who's going to be there and what do you love about your partner and how has your partner made you a better person? Can you describe for me one of your special memories and maybe send me a photograph of that memory or describe it in your story? And those are the questions that I think are the most important, because why are they deciding to do something? That's one of the greatest risks we take as a, as humanity, don't forget. Marriage is possibly the most ancient ritual we still practice in society. (25:00) There would also be an option to remember those who are no longer of this earth and that is also something that 99% of couples want to do. They want to remember grandma and I'll use the term of endearment that they used for their grandmother, not in this language like  Beryl or Mildred. Let's talk about poppy or Abuela; let's talk about her po po which is the Chinese word for grandmother. (30:27) If you allow your hands to support our couple, then their love always flows back and returns to you. And this is the part where I feel like the tears start to roll, especially in times of trouble and challenging times. I'll ask there to be peace between a husband and wife or two husbands or two brides. And I will ask there to be peace between the countries. (38:53) I'm getting myself choked up about how I'm very happy, where I am in my season of life, as you, call it. And I'm hoping for many more happy and brighter days ahead. Zita Christian writes fiction and nonfiction, hosts the podcast Ritual Recipes, and serves her community as a Life-Cycle Celebrant. She officiates weddings, baby blessings, vow renewals, funerals and memorials. Several times a year, she leads public rituals to celebrate the cycles of nature. She believes in the power of personal story.   Here’s a glimpse of our conversation: (03:32) To me, it means that I am part of nature. It's not merely that I love nature, that I want to protect nature. That it means I am part of it. I vibrate to the same rhythms about waxing and waning about light and day, about growing and about shrinking, about birthing, about dying and those, those concepts. (08:07) And you get to the end and it's, you know, that the end and there's a happily ever after of some kind. And I thought weddings would be happily ever after come to life. So, I took the foundations course and then I took the weddings course and that opened up a whole new world. And that wheel, I was on went up, up through the mud and up, back up to the top and, and you know, after 150 weddings and vows and baby blessings, more than that, I had that beautiful feeling that I've found what it is that I'm supposed to do. (10:40) So he was telling me that he had grown up in Ireland at a time when marriage equality was simply unthinkable, for young people today, you know they can't fathom that, but that is how it was. And his mother, his mother would often tell him that she hoped to live to see the day when Michael could marry Steven. (20:25) So I want to show that, you know, when you care a lot about someone so deeply that you're using the L word, you put forth a whole different effort in order to make things work. And that's what you see in a romance novel. So that's what I want to bring into the love story. And that's why I think the love story is a gift to the guests. (23:52) The reason I wanted to do the Ritual Recipes Podcast now is that there are changes going on in my life. My husband's not well and I've made the decision not to go out and do any ceremonies. So, the podcast allows me to connect with the world, to offer what I know about weddings and rituals and funerals, and provide that information to people through the podcast, which is free. In this episode of the Held Podcast, I chatted with Courtney Reissig about pregnancy after loss. We talked about common struggles and temptations that women face in pregnancy after loss including fear, anxiety, cynicism, blind optimism, triggered grief, and feeling guilt over not enjoying the very thing they’ve hoped for. I hope it this episode will encourage you to run to the Lord with whatever you may be feeling or facing, and find that he is compassionate and trustworthy. About Courtney Reissig: Courtney Reissig is a writer and bible teacher living in Little Rock, Arkansas. She is the proud mom of four sons, happy wife to Daniel, and author of three books: The Accidental Feminist, Glory in the Ordinary, and Teach Me to Feel: Worshiping Through the Psalms in Every Season of Life. They are members of Immanuel Baptist Church. You can follow her on Twitter or Instagram (@courtneyreissig). Questions in this Episode: Would you start off by just telling us a bit about your own experience with miscarriage?   How did your experience of loss impact your own subsequent pregnancies? Positively and/ or negatively?    Let’s walk through some of the common struggles or temptations that face a woman in pregnancy after loss. And talk about how the good news of the gospel and God’s word offer help in that place. a. fear b. anxiety c. cynicism d. blind optimism (not thinking about negative outcomes) e. triggered grief f. guilt over grumbling     Practically speaking, what are some things we can do to fight this temptation/ remember the truth in those overwhelming moments?    Questions for every guest: What’s one way God has used your experience of miscarriage to work in your heart and life? If you could encourage a woman to meditate on or memorize any verse or short set of verses in this season, what would it be and why? Noteworthy Quotes: “I always describe [pregnancy] as, if you’re standing at the top of a black diamond mountain (and I hate black diamonds, I refuse to go down them), and you have no other way down. You’re up there and you’ve gotta go down, like you have to do it, and you could get really hurt along the way, but the only way out of this is down. And I feel like pregnancy, for me, was like that. I’m pregnant, and I have to deliver this baby, but it could go really badly and I could get really hurt along the way.” “One of the things that I think the Lord did in my life with having hard pregnancies… What the Lord did in all of those was kind of rescue me from thinking I had any semblance of control over anything. I don’t think I would have said, “Oh, i think if I do xy and z it’s all going to work out fine.” I wouldn’t have told you that, but I know in hindsight 10 years later that that was kind of where my heart was.” “It was a real test for me to have open hands before the Lord and say, “I have no control over this. I can’t keep a baby alive inside me. It sounds negative, but it's a positive!” “I struggled to find joy in being pregnant. Instead of giving it to the Lord I would often just spin my wheels, look at message boards, look at articles, try to have some semblance of things are going to be okay… and the anxiety was just really hard for me at times.” “Another negative that it was hard for me to process was that I would feel guilty over the fact that I didn’t like being pregnant.” “All of the difficulty we face in pregnancy is not how God intended pregnancy to be. So, it’s all part of living in a broken world. And so in the same way that we grieve over the difficulties that this world brings us, throwing up in pregnancy is not how God intended pregnancy to be. [It’s not a good thing.] And not being able to enjoy food, and being so fatigued that you can’t take care of anything else. I think often-times we idealize and idolize what it means to be pregnant,..but feeling difficulty in pregnancy is just part of living in a broken world. And there’s a place for grieving that and lamenting that and saying “I don’t like this anymore than I like working outside in the heat without cold water. It doesn’t mean you resent your baby, it just means you don’t really like the process of getting your baby into the world.” “[We] as modern people may look at [the Psalms] and say “that sounds like grumbling to me,” but it’s also in scripture so…, that’s the main distinction: are we taking our complaints and our hearts before the Lord primarily or are we airing our grievances all across the internet.” “The verse that was always at the forefront of my mind was in Psalm 20 and it says “Some trust in chariots, some trust in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” And we don’t have chariots or horses to trust in today but we do have ultrasound machines and rising HCG levels and feeling the baby kick, [and sickness], and I was struck by that verse in my second pregnancy after loss that I was putting a whole lot of hope in that ultrasound showing a beating heart. And if I had that outcome, that that would remove my fear, and if I could just carry that with me to the next appointment then I could feel okay and I was just convicted and also reminded that the ultrasound’s only telling me what’s already there, it’s not making my baby live. Only God can make my baby live.” “What I’ve been really convicted by lately is that when I struggle with anxiety, I have found in my own life that I don’t obey Philippians 4. I just am anxious about all things. Instead of [taking] that to the Lord, I don’t take that step. He’s the only one that can sustain me and sustain the life of my unborn child.” “[Ask] what am I trusting in that’s actually making my fear worse because it’s actually something that can’t save? And then where am I taking my fears and anxiety? Am I spinning my wheels or am I taking them to the Lord?” “Part of living in a broken world is that we’re vulnerable. If we love deeply we’re vulnerable to pain and loss.” “I didn’t handle cynicism well, but what helped me was that I had other people who hoped for me.” “We could at any given point be facing the reality of any impact of the fall. We have to be mindful of that because I think if we [aren’t] then we root ourselves far too much in this world and this is not all we have.” “The heart behind that [mentality of] “I just believe this is my rainbow baby,” the heart behind that is they want to believe God is good, they want to believe God loves them, they want to believe God is for them, and the only way that they can grasp and hold on to that is to believe that he’s not going to let anything happen to them again. Because how could he? And I get that. It would feel cruel if your rainbow baby then becomes another miscarriage, it would feel incredibly cruel, and that’s hard to work through. But it doesn’t prepare you for those realities if you only think in terms of “God would never let that happen to me again.” We just have to live in that tension of “I’m going to actively have faith here that God is good and that he is for me and that he’s gunna do good in my life, and then I’m going to actively pray that he would let this baby live. And then I’m also going to ask God to sustain me and prepare me for whatever could come.” “I have always been comforted by Jesus’s interactions with Mary and Martha in John 11. And the comfort that he provides them and the empathy he provides them in their grief– he grieves with them. And when you’re having to walk through grief… you’re having to go back to the same doctor’s appointment, you’re having to sit in the same ultrasound room, all of those things that are triggering all those fears and anxieties you had when you actually were miscarrying your baby, the nearness of the Savior and the comfort of the Savior and the fact that he’s not far off; he’s very near to his people, he’s very near to the brokenhearted, and he tells all who are weary to come to him and find rest,... in those moments, the only way you get out of that spiral is to breathe deeply and ask the Lord to sustain you.” “To remove yourself mentally when you can’t physically is sometimes what you need.” “The verses that were in my mind, and I didn’t even know I knew them by heart, but they were in my mind all the time after our first miscarriage, were in Isaiah 43. And in verse 2 he says, “I will be with you, When you pass through the waters; and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you; when not be scorched when you walk through the fire, and the flame will not burn you for I am the Lord your God.” That was just in my mind all the time. I needed those reminders… I’m walking through fire here I’m walking through difficulty here and it feels like I’m being burned. It feels like I’m being burned alive and destroyed. But the Lord is with me. He’s my God. He will be with me.”   Scripture References: Psalm 20 Philippians 4:13 John 11 Isaiah 43:2   Intro/ Outro Music: My Soul Will Wait (Psalm 62) [feat. Micah's story from abandonment into healing encourages us to look to Jesus and His Word to fill our souls and hearts. No matter what wounds and disappointments we experience, we can find our hope by hiding under the shadow of His wings. Her legacy includes living with an eternal perspective which is easy to say but takes working out on a consistent basis. Micah mentions these three contrasts that are "red flags" and remind her to go to God for her daily bread:Worrying vs PrayingBarking at the kids vs Training the kidsGriping at my husband vs Serving my husband.I think we can all relate with these three contrasts, Micah. True contentedness is unremarkable to the outside world, or passerby. Typing away in my cozy chair in the living room in my line of sight Norman eats his breakfast and Oscar acknowledging he will not be able to sneak a bite, takes a long cool drink of water. The croissant for my Sunday morning ritual is proofing in the oven and Sunday Baroque's weekly program fills my home. Even having lost an hour of the day, I have decided to wake up with the sunset and use the dawn-filled hour to work early before we are able to go for our morning stroll in the woods. All is well, and so much surrounds me for which to be grateful. I began the morning reading Maria Shriver's weekly email newsletter, and in particular this morning's letter resonated with me, and most likely would you as well as a reader of TSLL. I've included an excerpt below as she describes a moment in which she felt, albeit unexpectedly, truly and sincerely content. "Over the last few years, I’ve settled into myself. I’ve focused more on my blessings and what I’m doing well rather than my shortcomings and what needs to be adjusted (something I highly recommend). As a result, everything in my mind has calmed down, and therefore my body has calmed down, too.  Today, my life finally feels centered, grounded, and solid. I feel like I’ve found my space and my place. It was one of those profoundly simple, yet headshaking, moments of self-realization that no one ever really talks about. Sure, there are still things in life that give me anxiety (the coronavirus, the election, and Mother Nature as our neighbors in Nashville know all too well). But, through it all, I’ve been able to find my inner fortitude and soothe myself, something I’ve struggled with my entire life. The truth is I never expected that the peace, joy or success that I chased my whole life would come to me when I was sitting alone, drinking coffee on my porch. I thought I was supposed to find that while giving speeches, accepting awards, and galvanizing change. That’s what our culture teaches us. It’s what infused into our beings at a very young age." I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that on this International Women’s Day, I’m a woman on my own path. I’m living my one wild, precious, joyful and meaningful life. In the end, my friends, that’s what galvanizes true change. Watching, witnessing and being in community with people who are following their authentic paths is what changes the world one breath at a time. I thought of that every time I washed my hands this week and it made me smile. So, follow your heart personally, professionally, and politically. Because, when you do, you will discover the feeling I felt the other morning. You will find yourself saying to no one in particular, “Wow, I’m good just the way I am.” —Maria Shriver in her 3/8/2020 letter from the editor of The Sunday Paper newsletter I realize the excerpt above was long, but hopefully, as it did me, it reassured as to what living well truly is. It's simple and intentional. It's internal and individual. It is purpose driven and intangible. It is also experiential and tactile. It requires of us to be present to be engaged with our world acknowledging much needs us to let go, but so too must we stay involved and aware. It is the daily practice of elevating our daily life by how we walk and open our eyes and minds to all that is around us and that is possible. Each year when my birthday rolls around, here on the blog, I share a reflection of some sort of life lessons, aha moments and discoveries about the world found along my journey. To share, as well, admittedly, as a way to preserve my own growth, my hope is to prompt introspection amongst readers as sometimes, maybe even often, we do not realize all ways in which we have grown as it can sometimes be hard to see when we are the ones walking through the world each day. I have yet to share my life lessons for my 41st birthday which fell during the final week of February, so I wanted to take today's episode/post to reflect. 1.Dreams, hopes, wishes can indeed materialize so long as we never let them go, we keep making small, yet steady progress, and keep refusing to not believe it can happen. 2. Clear, respectful, honest communication is to be treasured and a necessary ingredient for healthy relationship of all types. 3. Setting personal boundaries is a reflection of your recognition of your innate self-worth which will cause your self-esteem to grow. 4. Giving yourself closure on the past is healthy and necessary for being able to fully move forward. Your closure need not make sense to anyone else but yourself, but give yourself this gift of freedom. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2aF0dpArA7/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 5. Some friends, family and/or colleagues may not be able to travel with you into your next life chapter as you choose to grow and evolve or your life simply asks of you to travel a different way or in a different way. Letting go need not be dramatic or radical or even known, but rather a natural going about life's path perhaps to meet again at some other time or maybe not. And that is okay and healthy as it shows awareness of the social support that you need to be well. 6. Give yourself permission to be excited about your life journey, your everyday moments and just be giddy. Let your endorphins soar naturally and see your daily life experience improve as well. 7. Say yes to opportunities that cross your path but out of schedule with when you had hoped they might arrive. My trip to Paris and Normandy was not expected nor planned. In fact, I had told myself I would take at least a year off before returning to Paris since my trip in 2018; however, when an invitation arrived to return in 2019, I had to say yes, and all that I learned, experienced, savored and learned some more was more than evidence that I made the right decision. https://www.instagram.com/p/BzbTLLVg2zl/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 8. Less truly can bring more into your life. The unexpected discovery of my now home and sanctuary which is half the size of the home I owned previously is precisely what I instinctively knew I needed to live well. Less to decorate, but what I choose can be investments that will last. Less to clean, so I have more time to explore and create on the weekends, a perfectly medium size yard and petite garden, but exactly what I enjoy to have Mother Nature at my fingertips without a requirement of more time than I can give. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5qY6P5giC9/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 9. Mother Nature, moving my feet in Mother Nature, is my creative muse and her gifts are priceless. While I walk nearly everyday outside on the trails in Bend or near the river that runs through Bend, even walking in San Francisco when I needed to get outside, I did so and saw the famed parrots of the Telescope Hill, and oh what a delight. Inspiration is everywhere when we step out into the fresh air. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5gCmyiAqRb/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 10. My dogs have been for the past 15 years and are my companions in this journey of my life as they let me be "Shannon", provide company as well as freedom, yet keep me grounded as well. Savoring every moment with my two elder gentlemen. https://www.instagram.com/p/B6y1EUage_B/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 11. Cooking, creating in the kitchen, is to play and forever be learning and savoring everyday moments. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2r3OEjApER/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 12. Love really does live on inside you even after someone dearly loved passes away. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4nBcJVgAj_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 13. Host that dinner party you've been wanting to have. You may just bring beautiful moments and new connections to your guests that they will appreciate more than you will ever know. (read: 10 Ideas Gleaned & Confirmed from my Last Dinner Party, and be sure to check out my first book for details and a menus for hosting a successful gathering.) https://www.instagram.com/p/By08-OWAsos/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 14. Traveling with my mom created memories of getting to know each other as where we are now in our lives and wonderful shared experiences that I will never forget. Check out our trip to San Francisco. We also had the opportunity to go to Oregon's Garden which exceeded my expectations and opened my eyes even further to my mom's love and knowledge of "green-thumb" life. https://www.instagram.com/p/By4ciypgFcu/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link https://www.instagram.com/p/BxVse9XA71H/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 15. Continue to follow your heart, its inklings, its tugs, its curiosities, and you will never be led astray. Even when it doesn't make sense to you, even when you do not have a model to forge the path before you traverse it, your insurance is that it is your heart leading the way. I am reminded of Julia Child's quote which she expressed on the penultimate and onto the final page of her memoir My Life in France. "In Paris in the 1950s, I had the supreme good fortune to study with a remarkably able group of chefs. From them I learned why good French food is an art, and why it makes such sublime eating: nothing is too much trouble if it turns out the way it should. Good results require that one take time and care. If one doesn't use the freshest ingredients or read the whole recipe before starting, and if one rushes through the cooking, the result will be an inferior taste and texture . . . But a careful approach will result in a magnificent burst of flavor, a thoroughly satisfying meal, perhaps even a life-changing experience." —Julia Child While Julia is directly speaking of her experience in the culinary world of Paris, she indirectly and perhaps most significantly speaks to how to live life well. Invest, have patience, do your homework, and trust the co-mingling of those who know more than you about topics which you love as well as your own passions and curiosities. Beautiful art, the art of life, your life, can materialize in its own time and in its own unique way. May this birthday year offer insightful and inspired life lessons that elevate the quality of your everyday life even more and bring you all the more contentment, true contentment that you desire. Thriving Beyond Belief with Cheryl Scruggs

This week on the Thriving Beyond Belief podcast, Debra Fileta! Whether you’re single, dating, engaged or married – the quality of your relationships impacts the quality of your life. Healthy relationships are vital to healthy living. Licensed professional counselor and relationship expert, Debra Fileta, has observed countless relationships at various stages and has guided clients through each one.  In her upcoming book, Love in Every Season: Understanding the Four Stages of Every Healthy Relationship (January 14, 2020), Fileta shares that each relationship goes through four life-changing seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Just as nature cycles through seasons, relationships rotate through stages that can either make or break your love life. Each season plays an important role in taking a relationship to the next level, and depending on how you navigate each season, your relationship will either flourish and grow or slowly die. Spring: The season of rapid growth where friendship blossoms and attraction blooms.  Summer: The season when things get hot physically, emotionally and spiritually, but if you're not careful, you can end up getting burned in the heat of summer.   Fall: The seasons where your true colors begin to vulnerably shine through, as you learn the art of building trust through healthy conflict and communication.  Winter: The season when things begin to cool down, and your relationship is either strengthened with the passing of time and the comfort of familiarity, or it begins to freeze over.  Fileta believes that so many people fail to recognize these important seasons, and in turn, fail to learn and grow through them. In the book, she shares about everything from the importance of developing emotional intimacy, to assessing your conflict style, to the many aspects of attraction, to navigating a lack of excitement in a relationship and everything in between. She offers hope that no matter what season you’re currently in, it can be used to enrich your life and deepen your relationships. Because seasons are meant to be passed through again, and again, and again.  Love in Every Season teaches that healthy relationships are something you make, not something you find, and that even in seasons of pain and difficulty, there is unseen work being accomplished.  No matter what age or stage you’re in as you navigate through friendship, family, dating or marriage, each relationship offers opportunities to open your heart and stretch your love. Readers will learn that recognizing patterns of each season and understanding how to navigate each one with intention is important to the health of any relationship.  About the Author Debra Fileta is a Licensed Professional Counselor, national speaker, relationship expert, and author of Choosing Marriage and True Love Dates. You can be successful in many areas of your life. Work, Sleep, Family, Fitness, or Friends: Pick 3. I recently stumbled upon an article online with that title. And I have to tell you guys, I disagree with it. The idea that you can’t work, get enough sleep, and have time for family, friends and fitness is crazy. I’m tired of hearing the message that if you’re winning at work, you're failing at home. Or if you're winning at home, you're failing at work. What's interesting is, not only is this message common in media, but it’s also reinforced by the narratives in our heads. So many of us have this broken record on repeat in our heads telling us we're always failing. It's not if we're failing. It's which thing are we failing at today. But you know what? It's simply not true. Now, I know you can't do everything in the world (of course you can’t). But you can do the most important things. You can't take advantage of every single opportunity, but you can do the right things, and you can do more than three things. The truth is: You can be successful in many areas of your life. Related: Ep 84: Cultivating Good Habits in Every Season of Life 7 Areas of Your Life to Find Balance I love Zig Ziglar’s Wheel of Life. It paints a great picture of the most important areas of a person's life. If you’re not sure where you should be prioritizing your time, these seven areas are a great place to start. The Wheel of Life isn’t a prescription for every single person, but it does hold true for most of us. Just like a bicycle, when one wheel isn’t working, the entire bicycle will have trouble moving forward. That’s why it’s important to find as much harmony and balance as possible in each area. Let’s go through each of the different spokes of the Wheel of Life and what they each represent. This list is not in order of priority. You should prioritize these different areas based on your season of life, and then set appropriate goals in each. 1. Career (and Business) You spend a lot of hours of your life at work or in your business. So this should be an area of your life that brings you joy and fills you up. 2. Finances Your money affects everything. It impacts almost everything you want to do in life. That’s why you need to be intentional about how you manage your finances and set goals in this area of your life. 3. Spiritual growth Growing in your faith is not going to happen accidentally. Your relationship with God is like any relationship. It will grow in proportion to the amount of time you invest in it. 4. Physical health I’m not talking about being skinny here. I'm talking about how you feel. How's your energy? Are you sleeping enough? How are you taking care of yourself? We only get one body, so taking care of it should be a priority. 5. Intellectual growth Are you investing in your personal development? What books are you reading? What conferences are you attending? What podcasts are you listening to? What are you putting into your mind that will change the actions you take and the decisions you make? 6. Family It's really easy to take family for granted because they're just always there, right? But you know what? Your relationship with your family will grow in proportion to the amount of time you invest in it. So find time to pour into your family members. 7. Social This area includes your friendships, hobbies, creative outlets, etc. It's really easy to neglect this one when you get busy. Friendships tend to fall by the wayside. But without friendships and hobbies, your life will feel unbalanced. Related: Ep 67: How to Build Community With Your Business I know it can feel overwhelming to think that these seven areas of your life need to be perfectly balanced. But remember, life balance isn't doing everything for an equal amount of time. It's about doing the right things at the right time. It's about finding confidence in the choices that are right for you, knowing what those are, and then making them a priority. You know, successful women don't do everything, but they do know that they can be successful at many things. And if you focus on your priorities, then you can too. Being Successful in Many Areas of Life with Sarah Sloyan, Jen Sievertsen, and Suzanne Simms Y’all, today is a special day because I’m sitting down with three incredible women! Sarah Sloyan, Jen Sievertsen and Suzanne Simms are all senior leaders at our company, Ramsey Solutions. You may recognize these women from past Business Boutique conferences, where they sat on panels discussing topics like balancing family life with demanding careers. I had so much fun sitting down with each of them again—this time, individually. These interviews are jam-packed with incredible insight and wisdom into becoming a successful, well-rounded woman. Sarah Sloyan is the senior vice president of EntreLeadership. But with three young kids at home, I wanted to talk to her about how she makes time for more than just family and career. We talked about: Giving yourself grace when expectations aren’t met Prioritizing the most important things according to your season of life Letting go of unrealistic standards and cultural norms Related: Ep 59: How to Work Smarter Not Harder in Your Life and Business Jen Sievertsen is a Ramsey Solutions board member and the chief marketing officer. I so admire the way Jen leads with such grace and strength. That’s why I wanted to talk to her about: Being a strong female leader without being a bulldozer Going after something even when you don’t feel ready Leading people who are older and more experienced than you Suzanne Simms is a Ramsey Solutions board member and the senior executive vice president of the business to consumer division. Suzanne is gifted in saying no and standing her ground. We talked about: Taking your season into account when setting goals The most important question to ask yourself after you’ve set a goal How to know when it’s time to quit something Challenge: The Best Way to Have What You Want A few months ago, my husband and I decided we were going to finally move forward with a bathroom remodel. Now, our bathroom isn’t terrible, but it's also not great. In our house, it's probably one of my least favorite rooms. There's no counter space, the bathtub is tiny, there’s old tile all over the place—it’s just a sad, pitiful room. So, you can imagine my excitement when we finally decided to get it updated. We found a contractor, signed the contract, put a deposit down, and locked in the demo date on the calendar. What’s so interesting is that from that moment forward, I became more frustrated with my bathroom than ever before. I could now envision the brand-new, luxurious bathroom we dreamed up with the contractor. So, every day, when my makeup brushes would fall into the sink or my legs would be cramped up in the tub, I would get even more annoyed than I’d been before we decided on a remodel. Related: Ep 70: How to Be Content in Every Situation Well, there was a small turn of events: The handyman had a scheduling conflict outside of his control and had to cancel our bathroom remodel. Y'all, I was so disappointed that I didn't even want to go out and get a new quote. All my dreams and excitement for a beautiful, new bathroom went out the window. Well, last night when I got home, our neighbors were out on the front yard and asked if we wanted to walk down to the duck pond with the kids. So, I grabbed my family and we joined them on the walk. And when we got back, the kids spent some time jumping on the trampoline. And as I watched them jump, I thought, You know what? We live in the greatest house, in the greatest location, in the greatest city ever. I would not want to live anywhere else.   And immediately, my perspective shifted from being disappointed about our bathroom to being so grateful for a beautiful house with great neighbors. And then it dawned on me: The best way to have what you want is to want what you have. There are so many people who would give anything to have our old, 1983 bathroom. There are so many people who would love to live in our house and be friends with our awesome neighbors. There are so many people who would love to live in this location and enjoy the yard we have. All of a sudden, I was so grateful. It's amazing how choosing to want what you already have changes your perspective. Friend, I know you want bigger and better things. I love helping you go after your dreams and chase your big goals. But I just want to encourage you today: Don't get so focused on the finish line and so focused on the next thing that you miss the now. Don’t miss the opportunity to be grateful for what you have today. Remember, the things we have today are things we prayed for years ago.

At our company, we get to go to church every single Wednesday. That’s right, every Wednesday morning at Ramsey Solutions, our entire team of more than 850 people gets together to hear from amazing speakers, authors and pastors, like Max Lucado, Christine Caine, Donald Miller, Dr. Henry Cloud and Bob Goff—the best of the best. For years, our leadership team has asked Ramsey Personalities, like me, Ken Coleman, Rachel Cruze, Chris Hogan and Anthony ONeal, to prepare one of these devotionals for our company. And to be totally honest, we don’t love the idea . . . like, at all. I’ll give you four reasons why: It's a lot harder to speak to close friends than it is to speak to complete strangers. When you see the kind of speakers we normally have, it’s easy to feel unqualified. We're supposed to teach Scripture, which is intimidating. Committing means writing a talk, practicing and preparing, which is a lot of extra work. All of this together was enough to make me never want to do it. Related: Ep 60: How to Face Your Fears and Do It Scared But you know what they say: Never say never. Choosing to Believe in Myself A couple of years ago, I felt like God was taking me through a season of growth where He was teaching me many different things and stripping me of my pride. One morning over Christmas break, I was sitting on my couch reading my Bible and journaling when, out of nowhere, I did the weirdest thing. I picked up my phone and texted my leader, “Hey, God's been taking me through a season of growth. So, if you ever want me to do a devotional, just let me know.” I dropped the phone and couldn’t believe that I’d just sent that text. I thought to myself, Why did I do that? I don't want to do a devotional! I don't have any confidence in doing a devotional. My leader texted back almost immediately saying, “Love it. Let’s do January 2.”—which was one week away! I spent the following week pouring over Scripture, praying, preparing and practicing. It was one of the most exciting and life-giving experiences I've ever been through. Related: Ep 68: Inviting Faith Into Your Business And you know what? I wasn’t even nervous. In fact, I felt this deep sense of responsibility to deliver this message that God had so clearly given me. I share this story with you to show you that I still experience imposter syndrome. There are still situations that put me outside of my comfort zone and make me feel unqualified. But if we let these feelings drive our decisions, we’ll never step into what God has called us to do. That's why I want to spend some time today talking about believing in yourself and having confidence even when you're scared. Let’s get right to it. How to Believe in Yourself There are four things you need to “get” in order to believe in yourself and grow in confidence. 1. Get secure. If we're honest, 99% of our fears, doubts, insecurities and anxieties come from worrying about what other people think about us. But what if you didn't care? If you’re secure in who you are and whose you are, then when someone says something hateful on Facebook, or your crazy aunt makes a passive-aggressive comment about a decision you made, it doesn't fluster you. It doesn't rattle you. It doesn't shake you up because you have a confidence that comes from within. Look to Scripture to learn what God has to say about you—not Instagram. 2. Get positive. Positivity is not a personality trait—it's a skill you can learn. It's also something that will have incredible, tangible benefits in your life. So, in any situation, when the path isn’t marked, when the rules aren’t posted, or when you find yourself in a gray area, I want you to assume that you can do it, assume it will work out, assume people do like you, and assume you will succeed. Related: Ep 84: Cultivating Good Habits in Every Season of Life 3. Get Help. It's really easy to stop believing in yourself when you don't feel like you have any of the answers. But y’all, that's okay! We can't do everything, and we certainly don't know how to do everything. The good news is, there are endless amounts of resources available at your disposal. There's someone out there who is a little further along who can give you advice, tips and tools. There's the internet, which has an overwhelming amount of information. There are books you can read and courses you can take. So if you want to get confidence, go out and get the help you need. 4. Get experience. Nothing will create authentic confidence in any area of your life like actually doing the thing. For example, I’m confident in things like public speaking, coaching, and writing books because I've been doing those things for years! I have experience in those areas. Now, if I were to try something completely new, I wouldn’t feel as confident. I’d need experience. But it’s important for us to embrace that we’re all beginners at something. Education is theory, but experience is real life application. Nothing will prepare you for the real thing, like doing the real thing. So, go do the thing! Friends, when you’re not feeling confident, or when you’re having trouble believing in yourself, I want you to get secure, get positive, get help, and get experience. And remember, confidence is not a special gene that only some people have and others don’t. It doesn't matter if you're an introvert or extrovert. It doesn't matter what a personality assessment says about you. Confidence is a skill that you can learn. Faith and Belief with Mignon Francois I'm so excited to introduce you to my good friend, and today’s guest, Mignon Francois! Mignon started selling cupcakes to make ends meet even though she had zero confidence in her ability to bake out of a box. She did it scared, and today she runs The Cupcake Collection, a multimillion-dollar bakery with two locations! On this episode, Mignon and I talk about: How to believe in yourself even when you’re in a tough situation Why you need to stop waiting for the right moment and just go for it How to believe God for bigger and better things in your life Why it’s so important to be grateful for where you are and what you have Challenge: The Right Time to Play Small “Don't shrink back.” “Don't play small.” “Don't diminish yourself to make others comfortable." I’ve been seeing this message all over my Instagram and Facebook lately—so much so that I want to take a moment to talk about it. I think, when we boil it down, this message is all about confidence, which we talk about all the time around here. However, there's another side to this message that I want to make sure we don't miss. Just because God made you a certain way doesn’t give you permission to stay that way forever. And here's what I mean by that: We all have strengths that we should leverage and use. We also all have weaknesses, blind spots, and things we need to work on, which is what I think we miss sometimes in this “go get ’em” mentality. We forget that we also need to grow. I don't want you to just go big, I want you to grow as you're going. I want you to identify your blind spots and fix them. I want you to identify your weaknesses and improve them. Related: Ep 83: Develop Self-Awareness and Turn Your Weaknesses Into Strengths Let me give you a personal example: I’m hotheaded. I'm a firecracker who is feisty, stubborn, loud, intense and sometimes aggressive. These can be great qualities when leveraged and channeled in the right way. However, they can also be weaknesses. I can bulldoze people, dominate conversations, intimidate people with different personality styles, and even hurt their feelings (but have no idea I did so). But being that way doesn't mean that I get to barge into a room and say, “Christy Wright is here, take it or leave it. God made me this way, so deal with it.” Absolutely not. You know what I need to do? I need to work on those weaknesses. In some instances, I do need to play smaller. I do need to be quiet and let others lead the conversation. I do need to learn how I'm perceived by others so that I can make appropriate adjustments. Just because God made me strong and intense doesn't mean I get to use that as a permission slip to bulldoze other people. Maybe you're the opposite. Maybe God made you soft-spoken, quiet, and gave you a sweet and gentle spirit. But you know what? God still wants you to grow. He wants you to speak up, stop being a doormat, and learn how to fight for yourself. Regardless of your personality style, we all need to grow in our identity in Christ. So, even though I want you to have big dreams, chase big things, speak up for yourself, and not play small, I also want you to work on your weaknesses. I want you to have people around you who are brave enough to tell you when you're out of line, when you’ve hurt someone's feelings, when you're being passive aggressive, when you’ve made a mistake, and to call you out on an area you need to grow in. And I want you to have the maturity to receive those words and to make the necessary changes. It's hard, it hurts, and it can be embarrassing. But I promise you, you’ll make more impact, have stronger relationships, and have more confidence in who you are when you know the right time to go big and the right time to play small.

Today we celebrate the poet who wrote lustrously of Kubla Kahn's summer garden and the French flower breeder who made our favorite plants even more sumptuous with double-flowers. We learn about the descendant of Olaf Rudbeck, who sought to create a legacy of peace and the rainforest expert who wrote the flora of Mexico. We'll hear a lovely prayer for Autumn from the poet Rainer Marie Rilke. Today's Book Recommendation to help you Grow That Garden Library is A Way to Garden by Margaret Roach. I'll talk about the benefits of buying bagged mulch and then wrap things up with the sweet story of an iconic flower photo from 1967.   Before we get going, I want to say thanks for all the well wishes.   I finally caught this horrible virus that has been making its way through the family. It started with a sore throat, then body aches, and then a cough with no voice. It knocked me out for over a week and I'm still on the mend. And, I did get my flu shot but it's one of those years I guess.   Anyway, I started to use the last few days as I was waiting for my voice to return to incorporate a few new ideas into the show format here so if you're a regular listener you might hear a few new things - you'll have to let me know what you think.   So, I had a little growing zone reinforcement situation happen while I was sick. I had put these baby crotons in a planter out front for fall and I know they are a tropical and I should have thought to get them inside when I heard the forecast but they looked so healthy and tough I didn't give them another thought and then bam. Sure enough, that temperature dropped into the thirties overnight and as I was backing out of the driveway this week going to get more cough syrup - what did I see? All the little crotons (about 8 of them - don't worry I got them on sale) were collapsed and dead in the planter. I can't tell you how many times I hear from friends this time of year about a houseplant or tropical that gets left outside and then looks dead and then they wonder if it will come back. The answer is usually probably not. But you know, I get that this is sad and we can kick ourselves but really it's just one more reminder of the constraints we face as gardeners. I know we get by with zone pushing thanks to microclimates and that feels so great when it works, but every now and then I'm actually good with a reminder like this about the limits of my zone. It's kind of grounding. It's like - hey, fall is here and it's serious and in Minnesota that means get your houseplants in by October 5 period. Respect     One of the Facebook groups I belong to asked for some good side salad Recipes to bring out to the field for the Harvest crew. The suggestions were so good. But, one, in particular, caught my eye. It was for: Dill Pickle Pasta Salad and the recipe was from the blog Together as a Family. If you love pickles and pickle juice, then this is salad is for you. They wrote: "Dill Pickle Pasta Salad will be an instant favorite! Tender spiral pasta, 2 cups of diced pickles, cheese, and onion covered in an ultra-creamy homemade dill dressing with pickle juice." It is phenomenal! Something different and something the kids actually eat - which is such a bonus. So if you're looking for a fun, new side for your harvest meals, try making the Dill Pickle Pasta Salad: 1 box (16 oz) rotini pasta 1/3 cup dill pickle juice (from the pickle jar) 2 cups chopped baby dill pickles 1 block (8 oz) Colby Jack cheese, cubed small 1 small white onion, finely chopped Creamy Dill Dressing 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup sour cream 1/3 cup dill pickle juice (from the pickle jar) 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill (or 1 tablespoon dried dill) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Instructions Cook pasta according to package directions. Don't forget to add some salt to the boiling water before adding the pasta. I add about 1 teaspoon, give or take. Drain pasta and rinse with cold water. Add 1/3 cup of the pickle juice to the drained and rinsed pasta and let it sit while you prepare the rest. (Move the pasta from the colander into a mixing bowl and then add the pickle juice) Chop the dill pickles, and cheese into small cubes/pieces. Finely chop the white onion. Drain the pasta again that was sitting in the pickle juice. Add it to a large bowl along with the chopped pickles, cheese, and white onion. In small bowl, combine all the dressing ingredients and pour over the pasta salad. Stir everything together to combine well. Salad can be eaten right away but I prefer it cold, and if you do too, then cover it and refrigerate it for 1-2 hours. Notes: I would recommend not making this too far ahead of time. For best results serve this salad within a few hours of making it. Either right away or after the refrigeration time. Leftovers do keep well in the fridge (are still delicious) but the dressing thickens up and it's not as "creamy" as when you first make it). Use any dill pickles you want. I prefer the baby dills cause they are already small in shape so it's easier to chop them small. For best taste and texture use the real, full-fat mayonnaise. I prefer Best Foods OR Hellman's brand. If you want some heat then add a pinch (or two) of cayenne pepper to the dressing. Any cheese or pasta can be used in this recipe but after testing it out, rotini and Colby Jack cheese taste the best in this salad.   Brevities #OTD  Today is the birthday of the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who was born on this day in 1772. Along with his friend, William Wordsworth, Coleridge started the Romantic Movement and was a member of the Lake Poets, a group of English poets who lived in the Lake District of England during the first half of the nineteenth century.  Coleridge felt that taxonomy was a sort of poetry. He wrote that taxonomy was “the best words in the best order”. In his poem called Youth and Age, Coleridge wrote, "Flowers are lovely; Love is flower-like;  Friendship is a sheltering tree;"   Kubla Khan's Summer Garden at Xanadu is the subject of Coleridge's 1797 poem Kubla Khan, one of his most famous works. The poem begins by describing Kahn's palace and the garden contrasted with the setting of the ancient Mongolian forest. And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills, Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills, Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.     #OTD   Today is the birthday of the French flower breeder Victor Lemoine, who was born on this day in 1823. We owe a debt of gratitude to Lemoine for enhancing the beauty of so many flowers in our gardens: lilacs, mock-oranges, phlox, peonies, gladiolus, tuberous begonias, geraniums, and deutzias. Around the year 1850, Lemoine borrowed money from his gardener father and began a nursery that survived three generations thanks to his son Emile and his grandson Henri. The Lemoine nursery thrived on land bought in Nancy, France (pronounced "non-cee"). A few years later, Lemoine created his first double-flower; the Portulaca grandiflora or Moss Ross.  As with so many of Lemoine's creations, the double-flower created double the beauty. In 1854, Lemoine turned the original five-petaled single blossom of the geranium into a double-flowered stunner he called "Gloire de Nancy" or "Glory of Nancy."  Northern gardeners owe Lemoine a debt of gratitude for his work with peonies. He crossed the Paeonia wittmanniana with the Siberian albaflora; creating a peony that could withstand a winter freeze. Lemoine created some of our most memorable heirlooms: the white Le Cygne or Swan peony, the Primevere with creamy white outer guard petals, and packed with canary yellow petals inside, the blush-colored Solange peony, the pink Sarah Bernhardt, La Fee the Fairy peony, and the creamy-white Alsace-Lorraine peony. But, it is the lilac that will forever be associated with Lemoine. Incredibly, Lemoine didn't start working on Lilacs until he was almost fifty. That said, Lemoine's wife, Marie Louise, was his tireless assistant when his eyes and fine-motor skills were failing. She hand-pollinated the little lilac flowers and aided both her husband and her son with hybridizing.  Lemoine worked magic with his lilacs. He made them bloom earlier and later. He improved the quality of the bloom, and he expanded their color spectrum. He grew the very first double lilac. By the time the Lemoine nursery closed its doors in 1968, the Lemoine's had bred 214 new cultivars of Lilac.     #OTD   Today is the birthday of the Swede Alfred Nobel, who was born on this day in 1833. Gardeners are often surprised to learn that Nobel was a descendant of the botanist Olof Rudbeck. Nobel believed in peace and the goodness of humanity. At the same time, he recognized the destructive power of his scientific inventions. After Alfred's brother died, a newspaper accidentally published the obituary under Alfred's name. The experience was a defining moment for Nobel. He decided to craft a legacy of peace and made arrangements in his will to create the Nobel Prizes in Science, Literature, and Peace. The Nobel Prize ceremony is held every year on December 10th on the anniversary of his death.     #OTD  Today is the birthday of the Mexican botanist Arturo Gómez-Pompa who was born on this day in 1934. As one of the world's top authorities on rain forests, Gómez-Pompa founded the Tropical Research Center. He is remembered for his flora of Mexico and his tireless work on conservation.      Unearthed Words Here's a prayer for Autumn from the Prague-born poet Rainer Maria Rilke: "Lord, it is time. The summer was very big. Lay thy shadow on the sundials, and on the meadows let the winds go loose. Command the last fruits that they shall be full; give them another two more southerly days, press them on to fulfillment and drive the last sweetness into the heavenly wine."     Today's Grow That Garden Library book recommendation: A Way to Garden by Margaret Roach The subtitle is A Hands-On Primer for Every Season. This book just came out in April of this year and it's one of my favorites. The pictures are to-die-for. If this book doesn't make you want to garden, I don't know what will.  I also wanted to read a little excerpt that I found extremely timely. What I love about Margaret is that she is so real about what it's like to garden: "Mad Stash: Overwintering Tender Plants I am asked two questions over and over again by visitors: "Where did you get that plant?" and "Where do you put all those big pots of tender things in winter?" My reply to the second part begins with a question: Are you ready for an adventure?   Unless you operate a climate-controlled greenhouse - and even then, if the power fails - matching non-hardy plants to the possibilities of our domestic winter environment, especially in a northern location, is indeed an exploration.   I have been experimenting for years with stashing tender plants in the cellar, garage, house, mudroom – wherever I can – to try to turn each purchase into an investment plant. Before I go attempting any real heroics, though... I ask if there’s a way to carry over a piece of each instead, as seeds or by taking late summer cuttings and say Coleus or Pelargonium and rooting them - or simply by digging up tubers or bulbs and stashing those?"   Today's Garden Chore - Improving your garden one actionable tip at a time. Buy some bagged mulch for handiness and ease.   Compared to loose mulch, bagged mulch is less labor-intensive and messy.  For people with physical challenges, bagged mulch is way easier to use, stack, and store. Bags of mulch are manageable to carry and cart around. At the end of the season, when just a little mulch is needed here and there, you'll be glad to have a little stockpile.   The gardening expert Thalassa Cruso wrote: "The mulch you lay down will protect your perennial plants during the winter and feed the soil as it decays, while the cleaned up flower bed will give you a huge head start on either planting seeds or setting out small plants."     Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart It was on this day in 1967 that 100,000 demonstrators attend the March on the Pentagon.  It was one of the most massive demonstrations of the Vietnam War. A 17-year-old high school girl named Jan Rose Kasmir walked up to a row of soldiers holding rifles with bayonets. Kasmir courageously stood directly in front of the bayonets. She held a single chrysanthemum bloom in her hands. The little daisy-like flower was the only thing between Kasmir's face and the tip of a blade. This image, known as the flower girl, became one of the most iconic photos of the Vietnam War era.       Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Darlene Zschech, who's written over 100 Christian worship songs including the popular contemporary hymn “Shout to The Lord,” details in a new book how she's made it through the hardest seasons in her life. In the book, The Golden Thread: Experiencing God’s Presence in Every Season of Life, Zschech talks about God's faithfulness as she and her family coped with the shocking reality of her cancer diagnosis after they left Hillsong Church to establish a church plant. The Australian singer and songwriter started her music career with Hillsong Church but left after a successful 25 years to pastor a ministry with her husband, Mark, in New South Wales called Hope Unlimited Church. Before Zschech was told by her doctor that she had cancer, her family was already processing what the journey ahead would be like for her grandson who had been diagnosed with autism. Zschech chronicles all the hurdles she faced in a chapter titled "The Wilderness," which she described as being the most difficult part of the book to write. “I think we all have wilderness [moments]," she said, reflecting on the year (2013) she first learned she had cancer. "We all have winters and they're actually necessary. Winter is necessary in the scope of seasons. A lot happens in a winter that can’t happen in a summer. Digging into the beauty of the wilderness — that was a hard chapter,” she added. We all face Wilderness experiences in this life .And cancer is probably one of the most difficult things in this life to deal with. Troy looks at the dreaded disease of cancer as he uses the bible and his knowledge of health and nutrition to talk about the curse of cancer the causes of cancer and the cure for cancer. If you know someone that is dealing with cancer , you should make sure they hear this broadcast.

In a week in which Jose Mourinho claimed that a semi-final match against Celta Vigo was the ‘most important match of Manchester United’s history’, the team is back to spout the bollocks that is the world of football. Narrative, narrative, narrative. That’s all we bloody get these days. Far be it from us at A Team of John O’Sheas to suggest that the actual football we watch should be enjoyable in some way. Now it seems as though the players have left it to the media to add the finishing touches to their playing style. Conte is now the greatest manager for thinking of playing 3 at the back. Arsenal want Wenger out until the point at which they realise he won’t be out and then they want him in in order that they might do well enough that when they get him out in the summer it’ll be all ok. Tony Pulis gets to 40 points and then stops playing – says the media who basically wait until Tony Pulis gets to 40 points then publish articles on how he only gets to 40 points EVERY SEASON. Marco Silva is a great manager despite Hull going down. Paul Clement is a shit manager despite keeping Swansea up. And lets not even get started on the European leagues. This week, our question is this: does a proliferation of media narratives about a football league indicate that the league is in a terrible condition? Well… it will be the question when we finally work out what a narrative is in the first place… All this and more beside on this week’s episode of A Team of John O’Sheas…

Episode 25: Two Fun Announcements for the Show!

Shalom Sistas

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2017 24:17

Hey Sistas, I'm so excited to share this special episode of Shalom in the City because I've been excited to share with you something I've been working on the podcast for FOR MONTHS.  Actually, I've been wanting to provide this for you here on the show since before I started it.  When I dreamed of starting a podcast I knew three things about myself:   One: I'm obsessed with talking about Shalom. So I knew my podcast had to be all shalom all the time. And for those of you just joining the show on this episode, on the show our simple definition of  the Hebraic concept of Shalom, is  God's dream for wholeness, goodness, and yes, even peace for you and I right now, right where we are and every episode I invite a woman on who I think is practicing Shalom in some interesting way to share her story with us, our resident Shalom Sista is what we call her and it's been so much fun to introduce to you my friends and their passion projects.   The second thing I knew about myself as a podcaster is that I love stories. I love to hear stories, learn from people who live differently than I do, and allow those stories to teach me compassion and give me inspiration for how to practice Shalom in my life. I hope that you've experienced a bit of that in the past year of podcast episodes.    And finally, I knew that I would eventually bring on a panel of regular co-hosts to be our resident experts on different ways we can practice Shalom in our lives.   The reason is I'm not an awesome small talker and while I love interviewing people, sometimes when I hang up with a guest, I have so many more questions and would love to invite them back on to keep talking and that's not always practical. Which is why my book club episodes with Cara are always my favorites, she and I have a fun conversations and we love to laugh with each other. Those episodes feel like a monthly check in with a dear friend. Plus, while I know so much about Shalom and I'm actively practicing it in my life, I know there are women who are better in certain areas that i can learn from them and my service to you through the podcast is to let you learn alongside me.   Which is why, I'm thrilled to announce that starting in March, I am moving away from the purely interview format in order to learn more from three women who I am honored to call my friends. Each one has modeled wholehearted living in a broken world in unique and accessible ways. They're funny and kind, and intentional. But, they're just not three random women who I love, they're three women who have passions for Shalom in three distinct areas. There are three areas that I have noticed I think about peacemaking and living wholehearedly the most: 1: At home and in my community 2: In tough conversations around racial reconciliation 3: When I consume media, specifically when I read So, I had to think, if these are the areas I think about the most and where I need to most encouragement and have the most questions, wouldn't make sense to process these areas here on the podcast? I think so, because if I as your regular host and excited every single time I sit down to create an episode for you, I'll have more energy and it'll be a better conversation, one I hope inspires and encourages you.  As I thought about these areas, it became pretty clear to me who I could have fun and helpful conversation with and I'm so excited to introduce them to you. The next season of the show and maybe longer, I'll be joined by these three amazing women.   1: For Shalom in our Home I'll be talking with Jerusalem Greer, an author, speaker, nest-fluffer, and World Class Pinterest Pinner. Once a month, she and I are going to be talking about what it looks like to live out Shalom in our homes and our communities, thinking about what it means to be wholehearted families, friends, and neighbors. We'll also dig into the ways that intentional spiritual practices and home traditions can produce shalom in our lives and the lives of those around us.  You can find Jerusalem on her site, JerusalemGreer.com and that'll be in the show notes. Our hope is that at the end of the hour, you'll feel excited about loving your family and community, you'll try new recipes, you'll think about your rhythms, and you'll live wholeheartedly right in your home. 2: For Books you already know my book club co-host, Cara Meredith, so there's no change there. Cara can always be found on her site, Carameredith.com. Every month Cara and I will be talking about book through the lens of Shalom, what brokenness is the author address in her book and where do we see wholeness and healing in the book. Our criteria for a book club pick is non-fiction or fiction from woman of color because we know that these women's books often are not picked for book clubs. You can find the book list  and join the conversation in the Shalom Sista hangout and I'll that link in the show notes. We love interacting with you about books and seeing the ways our picks stretch you to learn from authors you may never pick up.  3: And the last co-host is someone you've met before, Abby Perry. Abby was my guest for our Celebrate Shalom episode and I had always planned to have her come back on share more about the work she does with Be the Bridge, a racial reconciliation ministry lead by Tasha Morrison.  Now, I know you might be asking how does this conversation fit into the show? Well, I deeply believe that we're experiencing racial tension in such profound way in our country. And Abby is uniquely gifted to help me model what does it look to have authentic conversations about race. Every episode we'll talk about our personal experiences with racial reconciliation efforts, discuss news/current events, and break down buzzwords that seem to polarize conversations before they even get started. We'll also be inviting you to submit questions or topics for us to discuss, and oh how I hope you will. This monthly hour exists entirely to be a gift to you, something that does not use its time inside your earbuds to pull you out of your immediate surroundings but to propel you deeper into them. Our prayers is that we will, by God's grace, model a conversation that is defined by charity, truth seeking, active listening listening, and testifying to this fact: Jesus has torn down the wall of hostility, making two groups one (Ephesians 2:14), and we far too often have bricks in our hands, rebuilding barriers when He has called us into open spaces. You can catch up with Abby on her site, JoyWovenDeep.com Every week I'll talk to one of these women, but the last week of the month I'll reserve for an interview because I do love to hear new stories and meet new women.  So that's the first big change, the format. The second you might have picked up already and that's I'm moving to seasons. You might remember from my intro episode that I wanted to make sure I paced myself in producing the show because I'm in this for the long haul. Well, one thing I learned about myself is that I work best in short time frames with a small break in between. So, we're going to start our first season in March go through June take the first week of July off, have a mini-summer season from July-August. Again, take another week off and start back up with a September-December Season.  I know that's a lot, so don't worry. I'll let you know when we're going to take break, just listen to the show and you'll know. So, since we're moving to seasons, I get to do something that again, I've always wanted to do, dive deep into on big idea over the course of several episodes. Y'all am bursting with excitement about this. Every Season, we're going to have an overarching theme that will guide our conversations. Every episode will address this theme in way, shape or form all the way from the rhythms of peace Jerusalem helps us form to the book Cara picks, we'll keep one theme in mind.    We'll announce that them in the hangout, the newsletter, and then here on the podcast. In addition to the episodes, we're also providing a syllabus for the podcast that include further reading, the show notes, Shalom steps, which are our practical next steps, and maybe a printable or two. We want to enrich your listening experience so that your practice of Shalom is easier and more joyful. Those are only available through the newsletter so make sure you're signed up for free and that'll be in the show notes as well.  So are you ready to hear March's theme? If you're in the hangout, you've probably seen the graphic and wondered what it means. Well, our March-June theme is: It's Hopeful Resistance. We're going to be exploring what does hope look like through the lens of Shalom and then how do we resist: division, defensiveness, and despair in a world that feels so chaotic and eager for conflict.  I think we're all exhausted from 2016 and wondering how do we as Paul says in the bible, "not grow wearing in doing good". Well, the co-hosts and I think hopeful resistance is a good place to start and we hope you'll join us in March. Our Book club picks for the first season are: March: Hopeful Resistance The Sun is Also a Star (Nicola Yoon)   April: Resisting Division (within Hopeful Resistance) ONE (Deidra Riggs)   May: Resisting Defensiveness (within Hopeful Resistance) Hallelujah Anyway (Anne Lamott)   June: Despair (within Hopeful Resistance) LaRose (Louise Erdrich)   We're also planning a summer series that is going to be so fun, so playful, so full of nostalgia and good times so stay tuned for that too.   Well, that's it, Sistas.  Those are the two changes to Shalom. So what does that mean for this month. Cara and I will be back soon to talk about Oprah's new cook book, what we thought of the stories in it, what recipes worked for us, and if we plan on using as a part of our regular meal planning so subscribe so you don't miss it. Sistas thank you so much for your love and support of the show and know that you have a cheerleader in me as you seek Shalom in your family, community, city, and world. Bye and see you next time!   Shalom in your earbuds, Osheta

GUIDO about his set: "... this set is personal to me, I love to start my weekends slow ... in this way, so you have a little peak into my world with ... Slowly Awakenings ..." // www.guidosloungecafe.com From GUIDO's point of view ... ONE memorable song quote: "And still I notice you when branches crack, And in my breath on frosted glass, Even now in death, you open doors for life to enter, You are winter" from "Every Season" by Nichole Nordeman. TWO artists, who should collaborate: To be honest, I don't have a clue, but what I would like is to see some mixed genres. THREE things you would like to have with you on a desert island: Music, My loved ones, More music! FOUR days ago ... was a Monday, the start of a new week, new oppertunities, new people to meet. FIVE words describing the style of GUIDO's guest mix: Chillout, Jazz, Pop, Soulful, Eclectic.
