They weren't employees. They were partners. Les Schwab didn't build a company. He built a culture. This episode reveals how one small-town tire dealer scaled to $3 billion by turning customers into evangelists and employees into owners. Somewhere between changing his first flat tire and opening his 410th Les Schwab Tire Center, Les discovered something profound: his people weren't just working for him, they were working with him. They weren't building his dream, they were building their own. This episode is a case study on how strategy, incentives, and trust create massive advantages that resources can't buy. When investment bankers offered Schwab billions to sell his empire, he refused after asking himself just one question: “What would I do with the money?” Les Schwab understood something most never learn: the real wealth isn't in what you keep. Trickle-downers love to pretend that "Econ 101" is a convincing argument against policies like the minimum wage that invest in working Americans. But the truth is that mainstream economists are terrible at predicting how the economy will behave in the future…Is Econ 101 broken? In this key foundational episode for the podcast, we dismantle the myths of orthodox economics and expose Econ 101 for what it really is: not a science, but a simplistic story used to justify inequality and defend the status quo. Our guests Eric Beinhocker (The Origin of Wealth) and James Kwak (Economism) explain how outdated assumptions about markets, people, and growth have warped economic thinking—and why it's time to write a new, better story about how the economy actually works. Part of our Back-to-Basics summer series. Essential listening for anyone ready to move beyond trickle-down talking points and think middle-out. This episode originally aired December 17, 2018. Eric Beinhocker is the Executive Director of the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the University of Oxford. He's the author of The Origin of Wealth, which applies complexity science to economics and challenges traditional market thinking. James Kwak is a writer, law professor, and former entrepreneur. He co-authored 13 Bankers and wrote Economism: Bad Economics and the Rise of Inequality, a sharp critique of how Econ 101 ideology shapes public policy and deepens inequality. Self proclaimed Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani meeting with New York City's leading CEOs who employ thousands at some of the world's biggest companies, such as JPMorgan and Pfizer. Business owners in New York are very concerned about Mamdani's anti-capitalist policies including increasing taxes on the rich to pay for housing rent freezes, free public transit and city run grocery stores. This a day after former Governor Andrew Cuomo says he will be staying in the race despite losing to Mamdani in the primary by a double digit margin. Fox's John Saucier speaks to Bryan Llenas, National Correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC) based in New York, who says besides the concerns of business owners there are Jewish leaders also sounding the alarm over the candidate's use of the phrase 'globalize the intifada'. “I was trying to figure out what's my lane that I need to be saying yes to? And what are the things I would have to say no to so that I can say yes to the better things?”Kent Chevalier's speaking journey is anything but conventional. In this week's episode of The Speaker Lab podcast, Grant Baldwin sits down with Kent, a longtime pastor turned Pittsburgh Steelers chaplain—who's built his career at the intersection of faith, leadership, and personal courage.Kent opens up about transitioning from preaching in churches to mentoring professional athletes, and how the toughest challenge wasn't the change of audience, it was learning to truly value his craft. Like many who come from service-driven backgrounds, Kent faced the uncomfortable work of charging for his expertise, despite years spent speaking for free. He shares honestly about wrestling with guilt, setting boundaries, and deciding that his time spent away from his wife and daughters needed to be respected and compensated.Underneath it all is a message familiar to anyone striving to turn passion into a profession: fulfillment comes from betting on yourself, even when the path feels risky. Whether he's backstage at an NFL game or leading a business seminar, Kent's mantra of “do it afraid” holds true. If you need a push to embrace your own next leap, Kent's story will remind you that your purpose is bigger than any one season, and your gifts are worth every bit of what you ask! You'll learn:Kent's role as a Pittsburgh Steelers chaplainPreaching new content as opposed to reusing talksNavigating which opportunities to accept and declineChallenges of charging for speakingTarget audiences and adjusting approach based on event contextImportance of expert positioning and business fundamentalsAnd much, much more!“I love encouraging people to embrace fear and to jump because comfort is really a robber. Despite uncertainty for US clean energy investors, things are looking good for the geothermal sector. US$1.7 billion in public funding was pumped into geothermal projects in Q1 this year - 85% of 2024's entire annual allocation – as breakthrough technologies promise to transform untapped resources into commercially viable clean energy projects.Enhanced geothermal and advanced geothermal technologies are making geothermal energy accessible anywhere, not just at existing sites chosen for their high-temperatures.To explore the science behind EGS and AGS, host Sylvia Leyva Martinez is joined by John Plack, VP of engineering at Ameresco. John explains how techniques adapted from the oil and gas sector, like directional drilling and reservoir stimulation, are improving geothermal's commercial viability. John shares what's changed since the IRA's passage, the role of EGS, and why improved subsurface mapping is critical to unlocking investment.Geothermal is currently supplying less than 1% of global energy needs, but could provide 15% of worldwide power by 2050. The US leads global geothermal power production, yet its 4 GW of installed capacity leaves vast resources untapped. Total potential US geothermal capacity exceeds 500 GW, with the best sites in western states featuring temperatures above 150°C and heat flow rates exceeding 80 milliwatts per square metre.Investment is there, and the technology is there, so has the impact of the Trump administration's energy policy been lighter for geothermal than other sectors like wind and solar? In this episode we're talking with Katie Holman about her two home births at The Farm (yes that The Farm...the one founded by Ina May Gaskin). Meet Katie. She lives outside of Nashville with her husband, Jimmy and her two sons Cash and Elon. Katie is our first DIAH mom to have a birth story from The Farm! If you're not familiar with The Farm, prepare to get acquainted. Founded in 1970 by a group of powerful and conscious people, looking to return the natural and sacred act of birth to the family, and have it in an environment that supported women and families. Ina May Gaskin, a juggernaut in the natural birth, home birth and midwifery world, was a founding member. Most anyone who explores natural or home birth has heard of Ina May Gaskin and has been influenced by her work and her writings. Back to Katie. Katie had watched The Business of Being Born documentary and read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. The message of Ina May really resonated with Katie, and that lead her to the decision to have both of her children at The Farm. Katie and her husband drove 2 hours to get to The Farm for both births...and while she was in labor, by the way. What a woman! She talks about how having her boys in this home type of atmosphere changed her life. One of my favorite things Katie said, “Birth is not something that happens to you, it's something you get to experience.” So listen in on what it's like to have a birth at the world-famous Farm. There's also conversation around placenta planting and placenta encapsulation. Another fun fact about Katie that just has to be mentioned: her great-grandmother had 17 babies at home! Seems like mama power is in the genes! Validation might be the most powerful leadership tool you're not using. This often-overlooked skill—distinct from praise, problem-solving, or agreement—has the remarkable ability to transform your dental practice from the inside out. When team members bring concerns or patients express frustration, our instinct as dentists and practice owners is to jump straight to solutions. In this episode of The Entrepreneurial You, host Heneka Watkis-Porter sits down with Lee Stewart, a globally recognised sustainability strategist, educator, and author of How to Build Sustainability into Your Business Strategy. Lee shares how sustainability has evolved from a buzzword into a core business imperative—one that directly impacts profitability, brand value, and long-term growth. Drawing from two decades of hands-on experience, Lee offers actionable insights on embedding sustainability into company culture and strategy. Demystifying Sustainability and Driving Real Impact Heneka and Lee unpack the misconceptions surrounding sustainability—like the idea that a single policy or small team is enough. Lee challenges this notion by stressing that sustainability must be woven into the fabric of an organisation, not treated as a side initiative. He defines sustainability simply: leaving the world better than you found it. Businesses, he says, must stop harmful practices, reduce waste, and create more resilient, value-driven operations. Empowering Change Through Strategy and Community Heneka highlights ongoing leadership events focused on values-driven entrepreneurship, and encourages listeners to embrace sustainability not just as a goal—but as a way of thinking. As the episode closes, Lee invites business owners to subscribe to his newsletter and enter a giveaway for a signed copy of his book. He reminds us that sustainability isn't a destination, but a journey that strengthens business, people, and the planet.
