Sheryl Gottschall has had a life-long interest in the paranormal and began studying the phenomenon of Near Death Experiences (NDEs) in 1980, soon after becoming a member of the International Association of Near Death Studies (IANDs). In 1995 she hosted IANDS co-founder, Dr Ken Ring while he was on tour in Australia presenting research for his future book Mindsight: Near Death and Out Of Body Experiences In The Blind. Little did she know she would experience an NDE for herself the following year during a serious decade long illness. Sheryl's interest in NDEs paralleled her interest in UFOs, so in 1988 she joined the Brisbane based organisation, UFO Research Queensland (Australia). At that time the organization was soon overrun with ever growing reports of alien abduction experiences so in 1992 Sheryl, with her late husband Dr Martin Gottschall, established the first close encounter support group in Brisbane which they facilitated over the years, on and off, as needs arose. Expanding her interest in the UFO subject and the move towards disclosure, Sheryl was invited to fill the role of the Australian representative for the International Association of Extra-terrestrial Research (ICER) which launched in May 2021, and is the first truly international group of UFO researchers from 30 countries working together. Sheryl loves media and has been a weekly guest on the Spooky Action radio show (2018), co-hosted the Strange Encounters radio show (2019), the Insomnia radio show 2022 (current) and now co-hosts the fortnightly show – Strange Encounters Downunder. These shows have served as a further catalyst for members of the public to report their experiences to her, many of who have never shared them before. https://www.youtube.com/@UFOResearchQueenslandThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4602609/advertisement

Sheryl has had a life-long interest in the paranormal which began in her teenage years, but in 1980 she began seriously studying the phenomenon of Near Death Experiences. Soon after she joined the International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDs) and in 1995 hosted Dr Ken Ring for the Brisbane leg of his Australian tour where he presented research for his future book Mindsight: Near Death and Out Of Body Experiences In The Blind. She also developed a deep interest in the UFO phenomenon, catalysed by her father-in-laws interest after he attended a UFO meeting hosting George Adamski in the 1960s. In 1988 she joined the Brisbane based Association, UFO Research Queensland, and three years later took on the role of President. Then in 1992, Sheryl and her late husband Dr Martin Gottschall, established the first close encounter support group in Brisbane after Budd Hopkins Australian tour. Dr Rings book The Omega Project: Near Death Experiences, UFO Encounters, and the Mind At Large (1992) ignited Sheryl's interest in the connections between UFOs and NDEs which was now being corroborated by the witnesses she was interviewing. Some years later in 2012, she established the monthly Afterlife Discussions group where she continues to find links between UFOs and the afterlife in the stories shared. Sheryl is also the Australian representative for the recently launched International Coalition for Extraterrestrial Research (ICER), the first truly global international UFO organisation that considers we now need to prepare for confirmation that the Earth is being engaged by non-human intelligences. ICER aims to take this discussion to the highest levels of governance, including the United Nations. Sheryl has had many paranormal experiences herself including an NDE, a bi-location experience, Out of Body experiences (OBE), UFO sightings, a close encounter with non human intelligences (ETs), poltergeist activity, automatic writing, and other unexplained phenomena; all of which propel her to continue on her quest to understand what it means to be human. Sheryl's research bridges the Afterlife and UFO subjects, and wanting to understand the UFO phenomenon more deeply led her to train in shamanism which she now teaches. She speaks regularly about the UFO phenomenon and the Afterlife at public meetings, conferences, community groups, schools, libraries and has given hundreds of media interviews. She has written articles for many UFO and New Age magazines and in 2018 was a regular guest on the weekly Spooky Action radio show and co-hosted the Strange Encounters radio show in 2019. Currently she is a regular writer for the UFO Research Queensland bi-monthly publication, UFO Encounter. Sheryl works as a clinical hypnotherapist, teaches Reiki, art therapy, shamanism and will be launching the Strange Encounters podcast in August 2021. "Human beings can no more give up narrative than we can breathing or sleeping." So says my guest Jonathan Gottschall. But why are stories so important? He argues in his new book The Story Paradox: How Our Love of Storytelling Builds Societies and Tears them Down that the primary function of storytelling is to sway the listener in some way, to change how they think or fell about something, or someone. "Stories", he says "are influence machines". Part of the political divide today, for example, is over the story of America: Are we a city on the hill, a beacon of liberty and hope and progress, or an oppressive, supremacist and bloody empire? In a deep sense, the culture war is a story war, and in light of recent political developments, Gottschall says our task is now "to save the world from stories", in part by trying to tell stories without villains. Along the way we talk about the difference between suspension of disbelief and narrative transportation, politics, the role of religion, luck, and the lack of political pluralism in academia. I came away even more convinced about the power of stories, and our decisions about which stories to immerse ourselves in, as well as how stories layer on top of stories, in a kind of narrative collage.  Jonathan Gottschall Distinguished Fellow at Washington & Jefferson College, author of The Storytelling Animal, The Professor in the Cage, and The Story Paradox.  Twitter: @jonathangottsch Website: jonathangottschall.com

Humans are storytelling animals. Stories are what make our societies possible. Countless books celebrate their virtues. But Jonathan Gottschall, an expert on the science of stories, argues that there is a dark side to storytelling we can no longer ignore. Storytelling, the very tradition that built human civilization, may be the thing that destroys it. In The Story Paradox, Gottschall explores how a broad consortium of psychologists, communications specialists, neuroscientists, and literary quants are using the scientific method to study how stories affect our brains. In this conversation based on his new book, Gottschall reveals why our biggest asset has become our greatest threat, and what, if anything, can be done. It is a call to stop asking, “How we can change the world through stories?” and start asking, “How can we save the world from stories?”

Sheryl was introduced to the UFO subject in 1980 by her father-in-law who had seen contactee George Adamski speak at Brisbane City Hall in the 1960s. As a child she would watch the stars at night and wonder if life existed elsewhere in the universe, and she read as many books about the 1950s and 1960s contactees as she could find. During the 1990s she became interested in alien abduction and attended a 1992 event in Brisbane featuring abduction researcher, Budd Hopkins. During this interview, Sheryl will focus on her interest in UFOs and also possible near-death experiences.

At first glance, the work of Evelyn Gottschall Baker could have been unearthed in an archeological dig outside of Buena Vista, Colorado, where the artist lives and works from her studio, Glass Fractions. But a closer look will reveal these perfectly colored and shaped skeletal remains are actually pâte de verreglass castings. Using her unique mold-free process, Gottschall Baker is putting her work on the map at events such as Bullseye Glass Co.’s 2018 Emerge/Evolve competition and exhibition.   On view now at the Belleview Art Museum, Belleview, Washington, Gottschall Baker’s series of animal bone replicas garnered her an Honorable Mention in Emerge/ Evolve 2018. The artist spent over a year developing her own technique for sculpting glass paste into forms that can be fired without a mold. Her experience and discipline as a test engineer proved invaluable in the methodical, detailed testing required to create the complex firing schedules for this kilnworking method, which must account for shrinkage, varying thicknesses, and the way in which heat affects individual components.   Beginning her career as a graphic artist and illustrator, Gottschall Baker eventually became an advertising manager and senior illustrator for the Department of the Army, for whom she created highly detailed, exacting paintings and drawings. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, she became a test engineer for a large U.S. defense contractor. During this time, Gottschall Baker studied watercolor and oil painting, and took classes in stained glass, which allowed her to pursue a part-time career as a stained glass artist.   Gottschall Baker enrolled in her first fused glass class in 2011, primarily to create components to incorporate into stained glass pieces. But her interest in fused glass grew into a passion, which was eagerly pursued through a number of classes, many of which were offered by D&L Art Glass in Denver.    “Living in Colorado,” says Gottschall Baker, “I find it natural to try to capture the beauty of our local landscape into works of art using glass. My initial desire to simplify my style was well suited for stained glass, but as soon as I discovered glass fusing, I began re-introducing detail and realism into my art. During the several past years, I have embraced this realistic style, and have begun to use both traditional and non-traditional casting and mold techniques to create sculptures that depict the beauty around me.” In 2018, Gottschall Baker began teaching her techniques in workshops in various studios throughout the US, Canada, and Scotland. She’ll be teaching at Bullseye in Portland at the end of March 2020 and at Bullseye in Santa Fe in November 2020.

Do you ever wonder what you should be doing on a weekly basis as far as your optimal physical activity schedule? Do you exercise regularly and eat mindfully yet still are not seeing the results you want? Have you hit a plateau? Tina and I question the expert in the room, Dr. Jinger Gottschall, for you! We ask questions like: * How many days a week do I need to exercise? * How much cardio and strength training do I need each week? * Does it matter what type of training you do each day? * Are two strength training back-to-back days in a row OK? * Should I go in with a goal? If so, would this affect the type of training schedule I should make to optimize? * If I am doing two workouts in the same day, does it matter if I do cardio before or after strength? * Does it matter what time of day I complete cardio or strength? * How do rep speed and compound vs. isolated exercises factor into the optimization process? * Is flexibility training necessary? * Do I have to do high intensity training to be fit? * How should we manage changing work/life schedules when considering consistency and frequency? * How important is it to stick with the same routine weekly? Is it better to have the same schedule or mix it up? If changing it up is good, how frequently? * Would you recommend some sort of fitness challenge as a way to break a plateau? * How important is having the right attitude in optimizing your workouts? When a mixed martial arts (MMA) gym moves in across the street from his office, Jonathan Gottschall sees a challenge and an opportunity. Pushing 40, out of shape, and disenchanted with his job as an adjunct English professor, part of him yearns to cross the street and join up. The other part is terrified.Gottschall eventually works up his nerve and starts training for a real cage fight. He's fighting not only as a personal test but also to answer questions that have intrigued him for years: Why do men fight? And why do so many seemingly decent people like to watch? Gottschall endures extremes of pain, occasional humiliation, and the incredulity of his wife to take us into the heart of fighting culture - culminating, after almost two years of grueling training, in his own cage fight.Gottschall's unsparing personal journey crystallizes in his epiphany, and ours, that taming male violence through ritualized combat has been a hidden key to the success of the human race. Without the restraining codes of the monkey dance, the world would be a much more chaotic and dangerous place.

Health experts have criticized the effectiveness of the 10,000-step daily exercise regimen. The exercise was developed in the 1960s following the success of a marketing campaign for a pedometer called Manpo-Kei, which literally means “10,000-step meter.” Researchers from the Kyushu University of Health and Welfare started to examine the possible benefits of taking 10,000 steps daily. The researchers concluded that a Japanese person takes a daily average of 3,500 to 5,000 steps, and increasing the number of steps to 10,000 a day could lower the risk of coronary heart disease. Researches over the years have attested to the exercise's health benefits. Major health institutions like the American Heart Foundation and the World Health Organization have recommended it to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, some experts recently questioned if the 10,000 figure should be the rule of thumb. Exercise physiologist David Bassett said that the exercise's proponents had no evidence on the effectiveness of taking 10,000 steps a day. Additionally, Professor Catrine Tudor-Locke of the Center for Personalized Health Monitoring asserted that previous studies used only the 10,000 figure as a benchmark. Therefore, the results are limited because the effectiveness of other figures was not tested. The exercise had also received criticism in the past. In 2015, exercise scientist Dr. Jinger Gottschall [GOT-schuhl] said that the exercise could be overwhelming for beginners. Thus, she recommended taking 3,000 steps a day for three to five days per week to get healthier. Because the exercise could be child's play for those who are already active, Gottschall suggests increasing the length or the difficulty of the exercise to improve the overall fitness of these people.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the history of celiac disease in the US is its absence—from medical textbooks, the vast majority of research studies, and the news—from 1952 through the 1990’s. Why did celiac disease disappear from the healthcare consciousness as well as the public eye? Today the Gluten Free RN takes a closer look at the story of celiac disease, starting with the first doctor to understand it as a dietary issue back in 1888. She highlights the important progress made by pediatricians Willem Dicke who is credited with identifying gluten as the issue and Sidney Haas who honed the gluten-free diet to exclude specific carbohydrates. Nadine explores the period of time when celiac disease seemingly ‘went dark’ in the United States, discussing the handful of renegade authors and researchers who continued to study the disease despite its absence from health education. Nadine also explains the resurgence of gluten sensitivity to the public consciousness in the 1990’s, when medical professionals from abroad questioned the claim that there was no celiac disease in the US. She covers our evolving understanding of the symptoms of celiac disease and the woefully inadequate training around gluten in medical and nursing schools. Listen in to find out why the mass screening proposed by the National Institute of Health never materialized and how the for-profit healthcare system impacts celiac patients. Let’s honor the practitioners who dedicated their careers to understanding celiac disease and write our own history through celiac advocacy! What’s Discussed:  The first doctor to identify celiac disease Samuel Gee, 1888 Established dietary approach to treatment The role of Dr. Sidney V. Haas in advancing celiac treatment All carbs and fats had been eliminated from celiac diet Haas discovered that kind of carbs made difference Experimented with fats, learned that could be absorbed 370 celiac cases studied at Bellevue, only 2.2% not cured The conclusions of a New York Times article from May of 1950 Late 1800’s, celiac disease ‘incurable and often fatal’ By 1950, 90% cured and deaths rare Cause still unknown The grains that contain gluten Wheat Barley Rye Oats (cross-contamination) How Dr. Willem Dicke developed the gluten-free diet Dutch pediatrician during WWII No access to grains during famine, previously sick children improved Mothers realized that when grains returned to diet, sickness returned Dicke credited with determining that gluten causes damage The myth that celiac is a childhood disease Patients do not ‘grow out of it’ When gluten is reintroduced, disease returns (along with other disorders) Elaine Gottschall’s work in developing the Specific Carbohydrate Diet Grains containing proteins other than gluten have negative effect on digestive tract Gottschall’s model removes all grains Paleo/whole food diet considered ideal The elimination of celiac disease from medical training Stopped teaching in 1952 Debate over carbs vs. proteins Same paragraph appears in medical textbooks from 1952-2008 Still taught incorrectly (if at all) in medical, nursing schools Should be part of every differential diagnosis The Paleo diet Nadine suggests for celiac and gluten-sensitive patients Gluten-, dairy-free Whole food Low carb, super-good high fat Appropriate supplements to remedy deficiencies Hilda Cherry Hill’s 1976 book Good Food, Gluten Free Hill cured invalid husband with gluten-free diet Whole food, no grain derivatives The classical symptoms of celiac disease Fatty stool Malabsorption Short stature Low energy Infirm The expanded picture of how celiac disease may present Osteoporosis Short stature Delayed puberty Iron deficiency anemia Hepatitis Recurrent canker sores Elevated liver enzymes Dental enamel defects Peripheral neuropathy Celiac cerebellar ataxia Seizure disorders Migraine headaches The genes that indicate a predisposition to celiac disease HLA-DQ2 HLA-DQ8 Occur in 30-50% of the population How recognition of celiac disease resurfaced in the 1990’s Gastroenterologists from abroad asking questions The 2004 NIH Consensus Statement on Celiac Disease Determined that celiac disease grossly underdiagnosed in US Proposed mass screening, healthcare education program Mass screening never materialized (‘too cost-prohibitive’) How the US for-profit healthcare system impacts celiac patients System profits from incorrect diagnoses Celiac tends to be last thing we test for Patients often spend hundreds of thousands of dollars out-of-pocket Nadine’s advice for celiac patients around choosing healthcare providers Many still don’t know how to manage celiac disease Look for practitioner of functional/integrated medicine What has changed since the NIH Consensus Statement in 2004 Little real change More media attention, some doctors testing Medical professionals still not educated in testing, follow-up Little support, assistance for patients in adopting gluten-free diet Dr. Rodney Ford’s role in celiac advocacy Pediatrician, gastroenterologist and allergist Promotes ‘gluten zero world’ Gut-brain-skin connection Nadine’s guidance for vegetarians and vegans Work with nutritionist to be sure not malnourished Consider changing diet for optimal health The vulnerable populations Jonathan Gottschall was an associate professor of English whose career had stalled in mid-life. Then one day he looked out his office and saw an MMA gym and he decided he was going to train to become a fighter to prove something to himself and to write a book about the biology, anthropology, and sociology of male violence. In the process, many of his assumptions about violence and masculinity changed. What he once saw as something terrible and despicable, came to be seen with some nuance. Part memoir, part anthropologic treatise, Gotschall's book The Professor in the Cage is a fascinating look at the role of violence in masculinity. In this episode I talk to Gottschall about violence and masculinity and why getting in a fight may be the best thing a man can do for himself.

Episode #17: Twice the talent, twice the laughs, twice as long! But when you're in the room with Ruth Gottschall and Mary Testa, you just don't want to leave! I had a fantastic afternoon with the two of them, chatting and websurfing and singing "Moving Right Along", the women's version. Yes, this is the same explicit song that you heard back in January for two guys in a gay bar, rewritten for two women in a singles bar. (The lyrics for this version appear in the back of the songbook.) Recorded 4/12/06.Where to begin? Ruth is a veteran of eight Broadway shows, most recently Jackie Mason's Laughing Room Only, however her longest run of late was as Eulalie Shinn in the revival of The Music Man, a role she will recreate this summer at the Sacramento Music Circus. Before that, you can catch her as Mrs. Upson in the sure-to-be-fabulous Kennedy Center production of Mame. Also, let PBS know that you want to see the educational series, Character Studies, so you can catch Ruth on the "Harold Hill" episode.Mary Testa's resumé is so impressive, I don't know what to mention first! Should I start with her two Tony nominations, for On the Town and 42nd Street? Her numerous Off Broadway credits and the Obie award for On the Town and From Above? Her amazing performances on the original cast recordings of In Trousers, Lucky Stiff, A Funny Thing Happened...Forum (with Ruth too!), A New Brain, Marie Christine, and most recently, Michael John La Chiusa's See What I Wanna See? Or should I just mention that she loves Faith, the Biped Dog and Michelle Collins' blog, You Can't Make It Up? Mary fans can catch her in the concert, Hands Across the Sea, at Merkin Hall on May 16th and 17th, as well as in Jam & Spice, a Kurt Weill revue at the Westport Playhouse in June.
