In this powerful episode of the Mike Drop Podcast, Mike sits down with Zach Skow, founder of Marley's Mutts and the Positive Change prison-dog program. What begins with the chaos of evacuating nearly 300 animals during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan unfolds into Zach's raw story of addiction, survival, and redemption. From a troubled childhood to end-stage liver failure at 28, Zach was given 90 days to live. Saved by his bond with dogs, he rebuilt his life through sobriety, whole foods, and purpose. His recovery sparked Marley's Mutts, a movement that rescues animals, transforms prisons, and helped Kern County achieve no-kill status. Together, Mike and Zach tackle the shelter crisis, breeding pitfalls, and the power of community education. Vulnerable, unflinching, and inspiring, this episode is a testament to second chances and leading with purpose. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

As I record this episode, we are on the edge — maybe already over it, by the time you read this — of a government shutdown. And I want to give you a bit of the behind-the-scenes intel I picked up that helps explain how we got here. According to one of my sources on the Hill (a Republican, for the record), the read is that Chuck Schumer is locked in. He's in a “dark place,” unwilling to budge, and if anything's going to change, it'll come from other Democrats. That's been the drumbeat here: Schumer can't blink. If he does, he opens himself up to a leadership challenge. And that's the one thing a Senate leader absolutely cannot do.The Democrats are trying to pitch the shutdown as a way to stand up for healthcare — that's the messaging. But the problem is that if the government shuts down, there are a lot of healthcare extensions and services that begin to expire immediately. I read off a list of them: community health centers, Medicare adjustments, ambulance payment programs, disaster medical systems — the works. The irony is that the parts Democrats hate the most about the Trump administration don't shut down. ICE doesn't go anywhere. Deportations still happen. Those are essential — and Trump's people decide what counts as essential.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The fight, according to Democrats, is over Obamacare subsidies and Medicaid cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill. But those cuts don't even kick in until after the midterms. Meanwhile, essential Democratic priorities lose funding the moment the lights go out. And that's the trap. They're betting that Trump wants to make a deal — that he wants to look like a bipartisan dealmaker. Maybe they believe they can spin this into a win. But let's remember what happened the last time Trump tried that in 2018: he got nothing. If they're hoping for Trump to ride in and rescue them, that's a risky game. The GOP Senate and House leaders — Thune and Johnson — are more than happy to let this ride. Hell, there are people in that party who love a shutdown. It's a stress test for them, a chance to see what happens when the government turns off. And the data doesn't look good for Democrats. A New York Times/Siena poll had just 27% of all respondents — and only a slim plurality of Democrats — supporting the idea of a shutdown if demands aren't met. That's a brutal place to be when you're the one pulling the trigger. So here we are: Schumer boxed in, the party divided, and the shutdown clock striking midnight. Maybe there's a backdoor deal. Maybe Trump throws them a rope. But right now? The only guaranteed outcome is pain.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:01:41 - Shutdown00:08:42 - Interview with Evan Scrimshaw00:30:33 - Update00:31:21 - Hegseth's Meeting00:34:42 - Schweikert for Gov00:36:09 - NYT Polling on Shutdown00:37:06 - Interview with Evan Scrimshaw (con't)01:15:30 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. The Halloween Jack-o'-lantern, made from pumpkins in the US and originally turnips in the UK, began its existence as a wisp of glowing marsh gas or "spooklight." We begin our episode with a montage of modern American spooklights including that of Oklahoma's "Spooklight Road," North Carolina's Brown Mountain, and the flying saucers sighted in Michigan in 1966, famously identified by investigator Allen Hynek as "swamp gas." "Jack-o'-lantern" was just another name given to what's more widely known now as a Will-o'-the-wisp -- a wavering, bobbing light seen in marshy places, understood as mischievous spirit intent on leading travelers off course and into their doom in muck and mire. Flaming methane produced by rotting vegetation in such environments, is said to the the cause of the phenomenon, though the mode of ignition is still largely a matter of debate. The Latin name for such lights, ignis fatuus (ool's fire), was also applied to phenomena having nothing to do with swamps, as it's been used interchangeably with "St. Elmo's Fire" to describe electrical discharges seen on ships; masts and other rodlike protrusions when atmospheric conditions are right. We hear a dramatic first-person account from 1847, in which St. Elmo's Fire (identified by antiquarian Henry Duncan as ignis fatuus) appears on a coachman's whip during a storm. A mirage in a marsh. Coloured wood engraving by C Whymper. Gas. Contributors: Charles H Whymper (1853–1941). We then hear what scientists of the 16th and 17th century made of ignis fatuus, often relating it unexpectedly to meteors or luminous insects, while mocking "the superstitions" who imagined it as wandering spirits alight with the flames of Purgatory. Along with marsh spirits exlusively dedicated to misleading travelers, ignis fatuus could also be a temporary form taken by shapeshifting fairy folk like Puck or Robin Goodfellow. We hear an example of this from the 1628 pamphlet, Robin Goodfellow, his Mad Pranks and Merry Jests. We also see the term appearing in literature of the 16th and 17th century as a metaphor for treachery or deception, in works by John Milton and William Shakespeare. We run through the variety of colorful regional names by which Will-o-the-Wisps were known: Bob-a-longs, Pinkets, Spunkies, Merry Dancers, Nimble men, Hinkypunks, and Flibberdigibbets, as well as some female variants including Peg-a-lantern and Kitty with the Candlestick. In Wales, these mysterious lights could be omens of death, also known as "corpse candles," or "death lights." Appearing around the home of the dying or at the deathbed, they were also called "fetch lights," as they would arrive when required to fetch the soul to the other side. In Cornwall, fool's fire is associated with the piskies, in particular Joan the Wad and her partner Jack-o'-the-Lantern, the former having acquired a mostly positive reputation in the 20th century as a luck-bringer. Mrs. Karswell also reads some tales of ignis fatuus in the western counties, where the lights are called "hobby lanterns" (from hobgoblin) or "lantern men." We then shift gears to discuss the pumpkin form of Jack-o'-lantern, beginning with a well-circulated Irish origin story. A quick summary: the light carried in a hollowed vegetable (a pumpkin in the New World or turnip in the Old) represents the spirit of a notorious sinner, "Jack," or "Stingy Jack," who upon death finds he is too wicked for Heaven and too troublesome for Hell. Consquently, he is condemned to wander the earth till Judgement Day, given the peculiar lantern to light his way. This, at least, is the most recent version of the tale, but when it first appeared in print, in a 1936 edition of the Dublin Penny Journal, there's no mention of any hollowed vegetable, much less of Halloween -- meaning this "ancient legend" actually evolved as Halloween folklore in the second half of the 20th century. We then do a bit more myth-busting on the other side of the Atlantic...

In this episode of Faithful Politics, Will Wright and Pastor Josh Burtram talk with Brian Recker—public theologian, former evangelical pastor, and author of the upcoming book Hellbent—about how a fixation on hell distorts the Christian life.Brian shares his powerful journey from fundamentalist Baptist roots and Bob Jones University, through service as a Marine officer and years as an evangelical pastor, to becoming a voice for deconstruction, healing, and inclusive Christianity. We dig into his critique of fear-based religion, his embrace of Jesus' love ethic over punitive theology, and why he believes rethinking hell is central to creating a more compassionate and just faith.Along the way, Brian explains how doctrines of eternal punishment shape evangelical politics, why leaving hell behind frees us for restorative justice, and how re-centering Christianity on Jesus' life and love could transform both the church and society. If you're wrestling with questions about deconstruction, hell, universalism, evangelicalism, or inclusive faith, this conversation will give you language, perspective, and courage to keep going.Guest Bio:Brian Recker is a Raleigh-based public theologian, former evangelical pastor, and Marine Corps officer turned author and speaker. A graduate of Bob Jones University, Brian has lived through the arc of fundamentalist Christianity, mainstream evangelicalism, and the difficult but liberating process of deconstruction. His work invites people to move from fear-driven religion to a spirituality rooted in love, justice, and inclusion.Brian's forthcoming book, Hellbent, makes the case that an obsession with hell has warped Christian spirituality, pushing believers toward fear and exclusion rather than love and transformation. Through his writing, videos, and public speaking, Brian seeks to help Christians reimagine their faith, embrace restorative justice, and rediscover Jesus' radical call to love. Support the show

Questions about whether “God the Father” is a sexist term that demeans women in general and mothers in particular, how long Hell has been there, whether God created it, and how to explain the kind of anger that would lead to the creation of Hell. Can you respond to the critique that “God the Father” is a sexist term that demeans women in general and mothers in particular? How long has Hell been there, and did God create it? I can't imagine that kind of anger.

Friends of the Rosary,Today, September 29, is the feast day of the three Archangels named in Sacred Scripture, all with key roles in the history of salvation: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.Saint Michael is the "Prince of the Heavenly Host," the leader of all the angels, who cast down Lucifer and the evil spirits into Hell when they rebelled against God. His name is Hebrew for "Who is like God?". He is mentioned four times in the Bible, in Daniel 10 and 12, in the letter of Jude, and in Revelation. In 1899, Pope Leo XIII, having had a prophetic vision of the evil that would be inflicted upon the Church and the world in the 20th century, instituted a prayer asking for Saint Michael's protection to be said at the end of every Mass.Christian tradition recognizes four offices of Saint Michael: (i) to fight against Satan, (ii) to rescue the souls of the faithful from the power of the enemy, especially at the hour of death. (iii) to be the champion of God's people, (iv) to call away from earth and bring men's souls to judgment."I am Gabriel, who stands before God." (Luke 1, 19)Saint Gabriel, whose name means "God's strength," announced the Incarnation of the Word in the womb of Mary and the birth of John the Baptist to his father Zacharias. He also appeared to St. Joseph and to the shepherds, and "strengthened" Jesus during his agony in the garden of Gethsemane."I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord" (Tob 12:15)Saint Raphael means "God has healed" because of his healing of Tobias' blindness in the Book of Tobit. His office is to be that of healing and acts of mercy.Raphael is also identified with the angel in John 5:1-4 who descended upon the pond and bestowed healing powers.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Fall: Texas killing fields & I-45 [REKLAM] Länk Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/spoktimmenKällor: https://www.spoktimmen.se/205 KontaktInstagram: @spoktimmen@linnek@jennyborg91 Facebook: Spöktimmen Mail: spoktimmenpodcast@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. In this message, Pastor Marco opens a new series on the doctrine of Hell. Though the idea of Hell may feel offensive, Scripture shows it is the just consequence for rejecting God's gift of grace. Because there are no second chances after death, we must decide today to trust in our only hope of salvation—Jesus Christ.

Hey, everybody—it's Monday, September 29, and this is your Monday Motivation Podcast by FWACATA.What's up, heathens? You sweaty, creative masses of chaos? Yeah, that thing that happened—wild, right? I mean, I don't know what happened, because I pre-recorded this. But thanks to the internet's nonstop firehose of madness, I'm sure something insane just went down. So now it sounds like I know what's happening. See how that works? “Dude, did you SEE that shit?” Boom. Timeless.Anyway. Welcome back to the other Monday Motivation—the one where we drag your creative bird out of bed, slap it around a little, pour some coffee on it, and shove it back into the ring.Today's episode? Creative Reboots.Restarting stalled projects with fresh energy. Here's a confession: I have drawers—literal drawers—of half-finished comics, folders of “someday novels,” Google Docs of script fragments, and sketchbooks that look like serial killer ransom notes. Every time I open them, these projects look up at me like, “Bro, remember us? You abandoned us like a Tamagotchi in '98.”We all have them. Projects that start hot—burning like first love—and then three weeks later you're wondering: Why the hell did I think a 400-page Gundam-meets-Full-Metal-Jacket-meets-Mad-Max comic was a good idea? (Spoiler: it wasn't. But I still tried.)Creative projects are like relationships. They start steamy. You doodle hearts around their name. Then reality shows up like a chaperone at prom, and you're sitting in the corner with your unfinished script, not even getting to second base.So what do you do? How do you reboot?Look at your project like it's someone else's. Pretend you found it in a thrift store. What's cool about it? What sucks? Sometimes distance gives you fresh eyes. Go get a coffee. Go stare at a wall. Hell, go smoke a cigarette if that's still your thing. Come back. You'll see it differently.Maybe the project stalled not because it sucks—but because you made it too damn big. Instead of a 400-page epic, make it a 12-page comic. Instead of a novel, a short story. Instead of a film, a TikTok. Give yourself permission to shrink it. Small wins build momentum. If you're stuck, switch the medium. Writing on a laptop? Try pen and paper. Painting with acrylics? Try markers, charcoal, Photoshop—hell, carve it into a potato if you have to. Creativity thrives on novelty. Sometimes the project isn't stuck—you are.Ask yourself: Why did I start this? Was it the story? The character? The mood? Go back to the original spark. I make soundtracks for my projects—yeah, actual playlists. When I hear certain songs, I remember what I wanted the story to feel like, and suddenly, boom—the fire's back.A reboot doesn't mean you finish it tomorrow. It means breathing life back into it. One sketch. One page. One note. That's CPR for your project.Look—unfinished doesn't mean failed. It just means paused. You can hit “play” again anytime. And if it really is dead? That's okay too. Bury it, honor it, and move on. Not every sketch becomes a masterpiece. But every sketch leads somewhere. So this week: dust off one stalled project. Give it a reboot. Look at it with new eyes. Shrink it down. Switch your tools. Reconnect with your why. Do something. Anything. And maybe, just maybe, that creative corpse gets back up and dances. That's it for today's Monday Motivation. If you're digging this podcast, support me on Patreon at patreon.com/fwacata—get behind-the-scenes chaos, comics, art, and maybe the occasional zombie project resurrection. And hey—the Kickstarter for issue 3 of FWACATA is live. Go check it out. Support if you can, or at least spread the word. Even a repost works wonders. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ThisisJuan/fwacata-3-comics-to-the-face?ref=9gnlxmAlright weirdos—reboot, restart, and as always… be good.1. Step Back.2. Scale It Down.3. Change the Tools.4. Reconnect with the “Why.”5. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection.

Insert all your tired 2025 jokes here because after the last nine months, we're pretty much out as this episode, we go All-Voyager, All the Time with a slate of episodes concerning ‘The Year of Hell,' one of Voyager's more infamous wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey moments. In ‘Before and After,' we see the writers try and tease out what never comes to pass as a time-displaced Kes discovers something horrifying, Harry Kim married her two-year old daughter! Then we go into two-part territory as we enter ‘The Year of Hell' and a lot of bad things happen to Voyager while Kurtwood Smith makes us ask ‘Is Annorax Star Trek's best villain?' But seriously… Harry Kim married a two year old and I don't care if she's a short lived alien race, that's real weird, especially considering who the father is!Episodes Discussed: Before and After (08:29), Year of Hell Parts 1 and 2 (38:25)Talking Points Include: Miles has a quota of Ed Gein jokes per year. Weird Al, The Devils, One Piece, Harry Kim marrying a 2 year old, Tom Paris asking for time off to have sex, the Voyager Homecoming comic, Miles requests Charlie do a Planet Wales for his next Star Trek RPG campaign, Annorax might be the best Star Trek villain, Miles doesn't platinum video games, Kurtwood Smith might play Trek's best villain, Chakotay actually getting to do something, Year of Hell failed so that Battlestar Galactica could soar, would it have worked as a year long season? How sometimes, compromises and failures can make a great TV show, probably for the best Tuvoy didn't lose a leg, does Harry ever get a promotion? History changing stories usually have one set ending and the much needed keyfabe of ongoing media.

Few haunted object cases have rattled the paranormal world like the story of the Tolman family and their cursed bunk bed in Wisconsin. After bringing home a secondhand bed in the late 1980s, their lives spiraled into months of relentless terror. Children fell mysteriously ill. Radios turned on and changed stations by themselves. A father heard a voice commanding him to “come here.” Their garage seemed to burst into flames that vanished as quickly as they appeared. And then came the fog, the witch-like apparitions, and the pounding footsteps that left the family fearing for their lives. The story became so infamous that it was featured on Unsolved Mysteries. Tony, Carol, and Todd rewatch the reenactment live, riffing on the Wisconsin accents, the absurdity of painting in the dark, and the Lutheran pastor who moonlighted as an exorcist. It's both terrifying and hilarious, a perfect finale for a night of paranormal chaos. Whether you believe in cursed objects or not, this is one story that will make you think twice before bringing home secondhand furniture. #HauntedBunkBed #TolmanFamily #GhostStories #ParanormalPodcast #UnsolvedMysteries #HauntedFurniture #HauntedHouse #RealGhostStories #ParanormalActivity #HauntedWisconsin Love real ghost stories? THE FIRST SECTION of the Book of 1 Enoch concludes with Enoch's travels to the ends of the earth, including a visit to Eden. We discuss the author's description of the portals through which the stars and winds pass, noting that evil winds came from the north, the direction from which bad things always came in Jewish thought (physical and supernatural). We also note Enoch's travels proceeded counterclockwise from east to north, west, south, and back to east, and compare that to other counterclockwise rituals from ancient times, on the summit of Mount Hermon, to the present day, at the Kaaba in Mecca. When we return to 1 Enoch at the end of November, since we'll be in Israel next month at this time, we'll begin the Book of Parables, a prophetic section that influenced New Testament theology.
