Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the absolute whirlwind of joy and good vibes, the poet HARRY BAKER!A meeting which is also a reunificiation, as Pip and Harry go back a good many years in the scene. Admittedly their time has been separated over the years, but that's the beauty of the scheduled recording! An excuse to leap back in. As you'll hear, while Harry has a flag planted in poetry, his world merges perfectly with comedy and humour as well as music, which lends his style to a huge amount of open doors out there for what he does. From the earlier days discovering Hip Hop via a cool teacher, to peppering raps with humour while not laughing at the artform, poems about maths and verging on being typecast as the 'maths poet' (though he does do the only poem with a pi-solo), silence and holding the room, developing technique the hard way by working rooms, Bestival, all the way up to daily poem writing through the first 100 days of a newborn. Yes of course there is so much more than that. But that's where you come in. So enjoy, and discover more about Harry through all links below - you'll love him.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureINSTAGRAMMANY HARRY LINKSPRE-ORDER NEW BOOK 'TENDER'UPCOMING GIGSSOMETHING BORROWED podcast (Youtube)SOMETHING BORROWED podcast (audio)SPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpeter, vocalist, composer and percussionist Pete Rodriguez, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Pete Rodriguez trumpet interview" About Pete Rodriguez: Trumpeter, vocalist, and percussionist Pete Rodríguez carries the bloodline of Nuyorican salsa as he takes his unique brand of jazz to exciting new places. Son of salsa singer Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez and godson of Fania Records bandleader Johnny Pacheco, Rodríguez cut his teeth playing with some of the greatest names in Latin music. By age 19, he was musical director of his father's band. As a vocalist, he sang on Tito Puente's Grammy-award winning Mambo Birdland. As an instrumentalist, he's appeared with legends including Celia Cruz, Chico O'Farrill, Bebo Valdez and Eddie Palmieri, including performing on the Brian Lynch/Eddie Palmieri Project's Grammy-winning release, Simpatico. As a bandleader, Rodriguez draws on his diverse upbringing—including living through the birth of Hip Hop in the Bronx and becoming an accomplished classical trumpeter during his adolescence in Puerto Rico—to create his own brand of jazz that defies categorization. The result is music that has been praised as "not only instrumentally ferocious, but texturally rich and at times profoundly intimate," with compositions "rich in musical depth, tone and beauty, as well as rhythm and melody… giving his music an appeal beyond genres." (Downbeat). His music demonstrates his aptitude for hard-driving, modern post-bop jazz, as much as melodic Latin variants and R&B-tinged grooves. Rodriguez has released a series of acclaimed albums as a leader, including Mind Trip, The Alchemist, Caminando con Papi (Destiny Records), El Conde Negro (Destiny Records), Obstacles (Sunnyside Records), and his most recent, I'm Pete Rodríguez, Vol. 1 (Sunnyside Records), named one of the Best of 2024 by the New York City Jazz Record. His forthcoming I'm Pete Rodríguez, Vol. 2 continues his exploration of identity, resilience, and innovation. "As a bandleader he's working on a clean, complex and flexible model of modern Latin jazz … his compositions change shape and character, according to the free flow of the arrangements, among art song and swing and clave. Draped over all of it is Mr. Rodriguez's powerful playing, soft-toned but battling." – The New York Times Episode Links: peterodriguezmusic.com Pete on Instagram (@prodriguezmusic) on YouTube (@peterodriguezmusic) on Facebook (@prodriguezmusic) Upcoming Events: Greg Black Mouthpieces, November 7 & 8 North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference, November 9 & 10 Book your alignment here! When does “just friends” really mean just friends? This week on A Pod Named Kickback, Nu' and Jacquie (yeah, that's J-A-C-Q-U-I-E!) dive into the messy truth about the friend zone — why most people waiting there aren't real friends, and why being “the nice guy” doesn't entitle you to anything. From there, the crew flips into a packed Kickback: celebrating SNAP benefits staying intact (and saying fuck Trump for trying to starve the people), breaking down new music from rising artist Chino, and sharing Nu's Halloween movie review of X — the wild horror flick about a killer old lady with a thirst for sex.Nu' also opens up about his love for romance stories with Ruth & Boaz, the upcoming New Edition x Boyz II Men x Toni Braxton tour (and his real-life connection to every one of them), and how October turned out to be his best month yet — in sales, in streaming, and in spirit. Now he's claiming “Nu'-vember” as the next level. Sean Combs, also known as Puffy, P Diddy, or Diddy, remains one of the most talked-about figures in music and pop culture, but lately his story has been firmly focused on the legal system rather than entertainment headlines. As of today, Diddy is serving a 50-month sentence in prison after his conviction last month for charges related to interstate prostitution, following a very public and closely-watched trial in New York. According to CBS News New York, Combs is scheduled to be released on May 8, 2028, but that date could move up if his legal team succeeds in efforts for a transfer and drug treatment, which could reduce his sentence by up to a year.TMZ recently reported that Diddy's daily life has changed dramatically—he is now working in the laundry room at a New Jersey state prison. A newly surfaced photo shows him with a graying beard, dressed in prison-issued clothing. The spectacle of one of hip-hop's wealthiest moguls doing prison chores has captivated both fans and pundits. Legal filings released by The Mirror US reveal that Diddy's attorneys are aggressively fighting the conviction, arguing that the prosecution was racially motivated and misapplied an old statute known as the Mann Act. They have filed a motion to reopen his criminal case and are pushing for an expedited appeal, maintaining his innocence and contending that he was unfairly singled out.Beyond the legal drama, the fallout from Diddy's conviction has affected those around him. The Economic Times highlighted that Meek Mill, once a close friend and collaborator, has begun distancing himself from Diddy since these legal troubles began last year—a public separation echoed by others in the hip hop industry.Despite everything, Combs' family remains in the public eye. CBS and lifestyle outlets like Soap Central have covered how his daughters are pursuing their own ventures, undeterred by their father's situation. Meanwhile, Diddy's business empire—spanning from Ciroc vodka to Revolt TV—continues under management, but the future of his brand has never been more uncertain. That's the latest on Sean Combs, whose once-glamorous lifestyle is now the subject of courtroom coverage and prison reports rather than music award shows. In the latest episode of Intellectual But Ignant, we had a special guest—Mula FNF from Atlanta, Georgia—come through to share his story. I first met Mula through a mutual friend who's no longer with us—shoutout to Yung Nellz—and we've stayed in touch ever since. In this episode, we talked about how Mula and Nellz first met, some of the rules and realities of prison life, and what originally led to Mula getting locked up. We also got into his journey of going legit, working for his father, and how that relationship has evolved. Mula opened up about his $1.6 million diamond fraud case, the lessons he learned from it, and the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds. We even touched on the school-to-prison pipeline and how it affects our communities. Overall, it's a well-balanced episode—equal parts of both intellectual and ignant. So kick back, relax don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe. Also follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok!

WHY LISTEN? Because Jeff Pearlman strips away the myth to reveal the real Tupac Shakur—a brilliant, wounded, and fiercely human artist whose story still speaks to America's struggles with family, race, trauma, and truth.Happy Halloween, everyone. To celebrate, we're turning our attention to one of white America's most mythic—and most feared—figures: the hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur. In Only God Can Judge Me, his new Tupac biography, the Los Angeles-based sportswriter Jeff Pearlman reveals both the humanity and the heartbreak behind the myth. Yes, Pearlman concedes, Tupac Shakur was far from perfect. Yet in his music, his movies, and above all his short, turbulent life, Tupac embodied the quintessential American hero—a man who, despite all the injustice and chaos around him, stood up for what was right. Here was someone whom perhaps not even God could judge.1. Tupac's story is fundamentally about trauma, not violencePearlman's biggest revelation wasn't about gang culture or rap feuds—it was about the crushing weight of intergenerational trauma. Watching his hero mother, former Black Panther Afeni Shakur, descend into crack addiction left Tupac with wounds that shaped everything. “The trauma of having your hero become this thing that's unrecognizable and zombie-like,” Pearlman explains, is what people miss when they romanticize Afeni as simply a “goddess” or reduce Tupac to a “son of a Black Panther.”2. Tupac was a theater kid before he was a gangster rapperBefore Marin City's crack epidemic and Death Row Records, Tupac Shakur was studying at the Baltimore School of the Arts—writing poetry, dancing, and dreaming of acting. He was “this free spirit who lived this beautiful, beautiful life,” Pearlman says. That artistic foundation—not the tough-guy persona—was his authentic self. Actor Jim Belushi told Pearlman that Tupac was on the verge of becoming an Academy Award–winning actor. The gangster image that Death Row demanded wasn't who he wanted to be.3. The book is sad—and that surprised everyone, including Pearlman“I didn't expect this to be a sad book,” Pearlman admits. But every proofreader who read it said the same thing: “God, this book is so sad.” Tupac died young, nearly broke, used by powerful people, and alone in many ways—desperate to be understood and accepted. “Life kind of gobbled him up,” Pearlman says. The mythology of Tupac as an invincible icon obscures the heartbreaking reality of a 25-year-old carrying impossible weight.4. Writing about Tupac as a white suburban sportswriter required radical humilityPearlman acknowledges the cultural distance he had to cross: “It's a weird situation being a white guy who grew up in middle-class rural America writing about Tupac... I never experienced that level of trauma.” His approach wasn't to claim expertise but to listen deeply and interview exhaustively. Along the way, he gained an unexpected education in Southern California gang culture—discovering that many former gang members and drug dealers “are wonderful guys” who “just had different journeys.”5. Tupac would be “absolutely furious” about Trump's America—and probably arrestedWhen asked what Tupac would think of today's political climate, Pearlman doesn't hesitate: “I think 25-year-old Tupac would be horrified, but not surprised.” More specifically, “I can't imagine Tupac Shakur of any age just sitting back” while ICE agents grab people in unmarked vehicles. “I think he'd be 100% getting arrested at ICE roundups,” Pearlman says. As for Biden or Harris? Tupac would probably see them as “corporate shills who don't stand up enough for the people.”Keen On America is a reader-supported publication.
