On the night of October 12, 1983, 17-year-old Donna Jean Awcock was babysitting for a neighbour in London, Ontario. When her shift ended, she set out for a short walk — but she never made it home. The next morning, October 13, Donna's body was found near the Thames River by the Fanshawe Dam. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled. For forty years, her case has remained unsolved. In this episode, we explore Donna's life, the night she disappeared, and the investigation that followed. We also place her case within the pattern of unsolved murders that haunted London, Ontario, during the 1970s and 80s — a city some criminologists later called the “serial killer capital of Canada.”If you have any information about the murder of Donna Jean Awcock, please contact the Ontario Provincial Police or Crime Stoppers.--This podcast is recorded on the territories of the Coast Salish people.Music Composed by: Sayer Roberts - https://soundcloud.com/user-135673977 // shorturl.at/mFPZ0Subscribe to TNTC+ on Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/TNTCJoin our Patreon: www.patreon.com/tntcpodMerch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/true-north-true-crime?ref_id=24376Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tntcpod/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/truenorthtruecrime Hosted on Acast. He's in conversation with Ben O'Brien of Wild By Design, who creates "artfully crafted, richly planted, lovingly tended gardens". Based in Ontario, Ben O'Brien believes that the best gardens captivate, delight, and deeply resonate with people; they respond to, reveal, and amplify the magic of a place; and they are those born from a genuine love of plants. Scientists detect for the first time an unknown source of GPS interference coming from space. Also, as AI begins to design more and more DNA sequences being manufactured synthetically, how can those manufacturers be sure that what their customers are asking for will not produce toxic proteins or lethal weapons? And… how camera traps in polish forests reveal that the big bad wolf is more scared of humans than anything else. For that last few years instances of deliberate jamming and interference of GNSS signals has become an expected feature of the wars the world is suffering. Yet this disruption of the signals that all of us use to navigate and tell the time nearly always emanate from devices on the ground, or maybe in the air. But in ongoing research reported recently by Todd Humphreys of University of Texas at Austin and colleagues around the world is beginning to reveal that since 2019 an intermittent yet powerful signal has been causing GPS failures across Europe and the North Atlantic. The episodes have been thankfully brief so far, but all the signs suggest it comes not from soldiers or aeroplanes, but from a distantly orbiting satellite somewhere over the Baltic Sea. It may not be malevolent, it could be a fault, but the net of suspicion is tightening. A team of scientists including some from Microsoft report today in a paper in the journal Science an investigation to try to strengthen the vetting of synthetic DNA requests around the world. As AI-designed sequencies increase in number and application, the factories that produce the bespoke DNA are in danger of making and supplying potentially dangerous sequences to customers with malicious intents. But how do you spot the bad proteins out of the almost infinite possible DNA recipes? Tessa Alexanian of the International Biosecurity and Biosafety Initiative for Science, and one of the authors explains some of the thinking. Finally, Liana Zanette of Western University in Ontario and colleagues have been hanging around in Polish forests scaring wolves. Why? Because as wolf numbers rise in protected reserves, more and more human-wolf interactions occur. And a suspicion has arisen that the legal protection they enjoy has led to them losing their fear of humans in a dangerous way. Not so, says Liana's team, blowing away the straw arguments and setting fire to the political motivation to reduce their protection status. Wolves are still terrified of Nature's apex predator – us. In this encore episode of Down the Garden Path, Joanne discusses how to extend the blooming season in your garden by adding asters. Topics covered in this week's episode: Gardens don't have to stop blooming in September. We can extend the season to October and November. It's very important to have because the pollinators still need something blooming. There are over 30 different species of asters. They have a huge variety of growing conditions, so there is an aster for whatever challenging growing condition you have. Here are the five asters discussed: New England Aster, Symphyotrichum nova-angliae The showiest, and likely the one you're most familiar with Native to most U.S. states and provinces It is large and very showy, with a bright, cozy blue flower with a yellow centre The leaves on the stem are densely arranged on the stem Prefer soil moist and they can grow in part shade One of the larger varieties: up to six feet tall Whitewood Aster Eurybia divaricata Delicate looking flowers Grows in dry shade which means it makes a wonderful addition to the shade garden Not super showy like most shade plants Found in Ontario in dry, deciduous forests So that's exactly what we want in our garden. If you have maple trees, pine trees, or something like that where the soil underneath is very dry and it's very shady, then this is something worth giving a try to Only gets two to three feet tall Smooth Aster Symphyotrichum laeve Similar to the New England Aster, it has leaves that are very smooth, lavender and blue Has a daisy-type flower with a yellow centre Blooms from August to October A huge pollinator for butterflies and a larvae host for the pearl crescent butterfly Heart leaf Aster Symphyotrichum cordifolium Lavender to light blue It is one of the latest ones to bloom and actually goes into November An excellent pollinator for butterflies and bees at late in the season Spreads slowly by rhizomes and it lightly self-seeds Two to three feet tall, sandy to loam soil, and part shade to full shade Panicled Aster Symphyotrichum lanceolatum This one blooms with sprays of white flowers, open spreading form, so also known as floppy Best grown with other plants to kind of support it If you already have a native garden, or if you're planting a native garden with other large tall plants, then this could be an addition if you want that Prefers moist soil, but it likes full sun You can purchase seeds from Wildflower Farm and you can again, sprinkle them or plant them in your garden this fall You can also start them like you normally would do if you wanted them to grow in February/March under lights and go through that type of thing indoors and then put them out next year Resources Mentioned in the Show: Down the Garden Path: A Step-By-Step Guide to Your Ontario Garden Fall Mums and Asters Are you a landscape or gardening expert? Steven Kelly is a semi-retired chemical engineer and a dedicated amateur runner, who has competed in road races for almost fifty years. He grew up in a working-class city in Ontario. Telling the story of his recovery from a series of strokes has allowed Steve to pursue another of his lifelong interests, non-fiction writing. He lives in Calgary, Alberta, and while he still enjoys running along the river pathways, it is now at a slower pace and usually includes photography. In the second half of last Saturday's game against the Utah Utes, WVU quarterback Khalil Wilkins impressed fans with his ability to run the football and make plays down the field. Many fans think it's time to turn to him as the new starter at the position as the Mountaineers travel to BYU to take on the Cougars in Provo. In this episode, Couz will give his thoughts on the topic. He will dig into stats and PFF grades. He will also talk about how offensive line play could have impacted each QB against Utah. He will also talk about handling the hostile environment in Provo and how that could be a factor in coach Rich Rodriguez's decision as to who starts on Friday night. #wvu #wvufootball #wvumountaineers Sources: Song: Smoke Rising Music by: CreatorMix.com Video: https://youtu.be/_oaZzkn0bW4 PFF: https://premium.pff.com/ncaa/games/2025/5/west-virginia-mountaineers/offense ⭐️Sponsors: ⭐️ DraftKings Sportsbook: https://www.draftkings.com/ Appalachia Digital: http://appalachiadigital.com/couz/ Get Your Tailgating Stuff HERE: http://victorytailgate.pxf.io/CouzCornhole

Canada's budget watchdog warned that the country faces financial peril as the Carney government's spending threatens to swell the deficit to $68.5 billion by year-end. “This isn't just about the baby, this isn't just about the parents and godparents. This is about all of us and it is about our faith.” This is the realization that came to Con O'Mahony, Vicar for Education in the Diocese of Hamilton, Ontario, and pastor at St. Margaret Mary Parish, while attending a Baptism at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. Standing in a filled cathedral before John Nava's magnificent tapestries depicting the communion of saints, he suddenly understood: “We are not doing this alone. We're not doing this in isolation. We are doing this with the whole church—there's something bigger than ourselves.” Con explains that preaching doesn't start at the ambo—it begins in personal encounters, especially when preparing for sacraments as personal as baptism. He connects with families before any paperwork is done, even if only for a few minutes before the ceremony, asking about the child's name and listening to their stories. Often, his best homily material comes from these everyday conversations—like a second grader's humorous definition of Baptism: “When the priest gives you a bath in church so that God will like you better.” Con sees truth in this—baptism is God washing us—but with one crucial correction: not to like us better, but to prove God's unconditional love was there for us all along. Con and host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., connect this love to not only the person being baptized but to the whole community and to the faith. The conversation moves from the practical—how Con prepares, what makes a good baptismal homily—to a deeper shift in how we approach these moments. As Ricardo reflects, too often “we tend to preach for people that we don't think we'll ever see again.” What if instead we “preach as though you want to see them again and you are going to see them again? This is not a once and for all—this is a once and then.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the upcoming special episodes I'm going to feature songbird species who fit three criteria: that I have plenty of recordings of them, that I have not significantly featured them before, and that they are not likely to be featured in the next season of Songbirding because they do no occur in the west, or have not shown up significantly in my western recordings as of right now. The Orchard Oriole has a curious song. Much like the Baltimore Oriole, each bird might have a slightly different song, with their own unique phrases. This songbird has quite a varied appearance, with lemony-yellow females, and males with two plumages: one of a yellow bird with a black beard, typically seen in the second year of the bird's life, followed up with a more mature plumage of a dark back and hood with what I like to refer to as a blood-orange chest, though some describe this more as a chestnut colour. Either way, the older males are quite a dark bird. I find that the Orchard Oriole usually sounds like it is frequently interrupting its own whistle-y songs with terse, harsh interjections. And to my ears, sounds almost like an Eastern Warbling Vireo, except that it is interrupting its own songs. For this episode we'll be exploring three locations within my Ontario breeding bird atlas square, in Haldimand County, Ontario. I've found over the years of this survey that this species is highly successful in Haldimand, showing up in a high proportion of my random point count surveys. For everyone listening to today's episode—especially if you're a mokuhanga printmaker—you can probably trace your first step into the art form back to a single person, someone who sparked your journey into mokuhanga, however it has evolved over time. On this episode of The Unfinished Print: A Mokuhanga Podcast, I speak with that person for me: Elizabeth Forrest. Elizabeth was my first mokuhanga teacher, the one who encouraged me to study the practice and explore its technical depths. Elizabeth is an accomplished printmaker with a long and varied career. We discuss her discovery of mokuhanga here in Toronto, her experiences living and working in Japan, and how she has adapted her art through life changes and culture shock. She also shares her thoughts on the importance of residencies, her love of washi, and the ways she sources her materials today. It's a feeling you only want to feel once - the panic of suspecting an abrupt light flash as you're driving, only to receive a ticket in the mail a few weeks later with a picture of your car next to an owed-amount for speeding. Well, it's a feeling Ontarians soon won't be feeling ever again.Premier Ford plans to put pen to paper on his dislike for speed enforcement cameras, announcing last week his government's incoming legislation to ban them in a fight against what he calls a 'cash-grab', after the fact safety tool. Instead, he's investing to help municipalities implement speed bumps, round abouts and other traffic-calming measures. But it's a move that's garnered as much support as it has pushback, with groups pleading with Ford to think twice before canning a tool that saves lives and makes drivers think twice before using their heavy foot. Host Maria Kestane speaks to Benjamin Wolfe, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, and Co-Director of the Applied Perception and Psychophysics Laboratory to discuss what the changes in road safety measures could look like, and how driver behaviour is influenced way before someone gets in their car and turns the key. The Victorian era transformed Britain into the world's foremost industrial and imperial power. The rise of factories saw the expansion of sprawling cities, inhabited by a working class trapped in grinding poverty. But while the ever-growing ranks of impoverished residents were dogged by dangerous conditions, slums and the perpetual fear of the workhouse, industrialists became rich on the back of their labour. As Britain continued its march forward, advancements in science, technology, and machinery began to expose the dark underbelly of the empire. Victorians grappled with the consequences of their own progress, as moral and religious ideals collided with a rapidly changing world. But in what way did these new ideologies of gender, power, and class challenge society? And how would this epic, nation-defining era finally come to an end? This is A Short History Of The Victorians, Part Two. A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins. Tonight's episode features DJ from rural Ireland, recounting his 2023 encounter in County Longford, where he and his wife witnessed a massive black triangular craft with fiery orange lights. Alongside this sighting, DJ shares chilling experiences from his youth, including a séance gone wrong, a violent paranormal event after reciting the Our Father in a mirror, and a night in Ireland's most haunted room. Then we travel to Northern Ontario with Michael, who was only seven years old when he saw a silent black triangle cross the sky above his hometown in July 1992. Decades later, he discovered another sighting from the very same month in a city just hours away, reinforcing that what he saw was real. Michael reflects on how that single moment shaped a lifelong curiosity about the skies.More information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/ep-353-encounters-with-the-unexplained/Hidden Cults (Promo)It is a documentary-style podcast that digs deep into the world's most extreme, elusive, and explosive fringe groups.
