To snowy Ontario, Canada for our 2026 Christmas Special! Living out the dream of countless exhausted women, Laura Lee Davidson retreated to an island in the middle of a lake, and lived there alone through a long Canadian winter. But she wasn't really alone. Wild creatures became her friends, and she was constantly the recipient of neighborly kindness from folks on the mainland. Laura Lee's 1922 book about her winter on the island is now considered a classic of Canadian literature, and a vivid portrait of time gone by. Katie reads some of her favorite excerpts from the book, and we all tag along with Laura Lee Davidson, retreating into a remote winter solitude, and marveling at the wonders of nature. ___________________________________ Find Laura Lee Davidson's A Winter of Content HERE, or read a digital copy HERE. Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Federal News Bulletin from CIC news release. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.News release December 8, 2025—Toronto—In support of the Budget 2025 commitment to fill critical labour gaps with high-skilled talent, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Maggie Chi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, today announced new measures to support Canada's health care system by making the path to permanent residence simpler for international doctors. As part of these measures, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will create a new Express Entry category for international doctors with at least one year of Canadian work experience in an eligible occupation, gained within the last three years. These doctors are already working in Canada on a temporary basis, helping patients and contributing to our health care system. We're giving these doctors a clear pathway to permanent residence in Canada to fill critical health workforce gaps, while helping support reliable care and a stable health system for Canadians. Invitations to apply for the new Express Entry category will be issued in early 2026. The Government of Canada will reserve 5,000 federal admission spaces for provinces and territories to nominate licensed doctors with job offers. These spaces are in addition to the annual Provincial Nominee Program allocations. Doctors who are nominated will receive expedited 14-day work permit processing, allowing them to work while awaiting permanent residence. These measures also support our broader International Talent Attraction Strategy, which aims to strengthen the jobs and industries that drive our economy and communities, while helping restore balance and long-term sustainability in our immigration system. | You can always access past news from the Canadian Federal Government by visiting this link: https://myar.me/tag/fed/. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're going to jail! "Finally," some would say. Well too bad because we're not actually going to jail, but we are going to talk about jail and who is going there in the first part of the show. Also, in this all news episode, we will look at the aftermath of lower international student enrollment and then head to a land down under and a great social (media) experiment underway there now. This Thursday, December 11, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: The Prison Experiment. A CBC investigation published this week shows what we've all know for some time: Ontario's jails are dangerously overcrowded. More than that, four out of five people in prison are actually awaiting trail, which means they're technically innocent, at least in the eyes of the law. As the Ontario government flaunts their law & order agenda, and "Jail, Not Bail", are we missing the forest for the trees with this story? Student Services. A lot has been done to vilify international students in Ontario, but as their numbers continue to dwindle, we're seeing the follow on effects. In Brampton and Waterloo, transit systems are looking at service cuts because there are now fewer riders, and redevelopment plans in downtown Guelph and Kitchener are delayed as Conestoga College faces a budget crunch. So are international students the real villains, or can we finally talk about the ways they were exploited all along? Antisocial. Australia took the first step this week, becoming so far the only country in the world to ban social media for anyone under the age of 16. A few other countries are considering it, and many more are watching and waiting to see the results, but this will definitely be a big test for the tech oligarchs who have long shirked government regulation and other controls on their business, even if it means not protecting kids from the potential harms of social media. Is this the future? Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

A mushroom on a tree isn't a verdict — but in arboriculture, it's often treated like one.In this episode, Nadina Galle talks with Kyle McLoughlin, a Board Certified Master Arborist and founder of Ironwood Arboricultural, from his two-acre, tree-filled property in St. George, Ontario. Together, they unpack why fungi should be foundational knowledge for anyone caring for trees — and why “there's a mushroom, cut it down” is more often fear than good practice. They explore Armillaria and other misunderstood fungi, how decay actually affects tree risk and failure probability, and why arborists should think more like physicians: diagnosing before treating. The conversation also examines how many urban fungal problems are created not by nature, but by how we design, dig, drain, and pave our cities.Nadina and Kyle discuss the tools that could help shift tree care from reactive removals to proactive preservation — including pneumatic excavation, sonic tomography, and ground-penetrating radar — while returning to a core insight: better growing conditions matter more than any technology. This episode will resonate with arborists, urban foresters, city managers, and anyone involved in tree risk, urban tree preservation, or the future of urban nature. By the end, you'll never look at a mushroom on a tree the same way again.Find Kyle and Ironwood Arboricultural at ironwoodarboricultural.ca and @ironwoodarboricultural on Instagram.

From whiteout conditions to multi-car pileups, winter driving across Canada can turn dangerous fast. Nearly 400 crashes were reported in southwestern Ontario during a recent storm, and a youth hockey team bus crash in northern Alberta has raised fresh concerns about road safety. Our question: From black ice to blizzards, what's your winter accident story? Do you feel safe driving on Canada's roads and highways?

Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news today dominated by the vile attack in Sydney, extremism begetting extremism all permitted by unfiltered hatreds flowing out from its center. Financial news seems trivial in light of this. Of course we won't be covering this Australian tragedy. But it is likely to harden attitudes just when they need to soften. In the meantime, we are noting tech weakness dominating equity markets, and Fed speaker comments (here and here) pushing long benchmark bond yields higher. The USD is soft and down nearly -1% for the week. But first, the week ahead will locally feature Wednesday's current account data, and more so by Thursday's GDP tracking of Q3-2025 economic activity. The final consumer and business confidence survey results will likely come this week too.In Australia on the economic front, it will be about tracking household wealth, also out on Thursday. In the US, they will release catch-up data for non-farm payrolls on Wednesday for both October (??) and November. (+35,000 expected) That will be followed by November CPI data (3.2% expected). A slew of other US activity data will hit the news as well.In Japan, financial markets will be glued to their central bank meeting results (expect a +25 bps rise to 0.75%) along with a 3%+ CPI reading. From China, they will have their big monthly data dump of retail and industrial activity. In India they will release a lot of data too, including PMIs, but then, we will also get PMIs from many other countries, including our own PSI as well.Over the weekend, China said its new loan demand remains unusually weak, and in November came in even lower than the weak forecasts by observers. Chinese banks extended ¥390 bln in new yuan loans, up from the unusually low October level but still below both last year's weak ¥580 bln and market expectations of ¥500 bln. Soft household demand continues to weigh on stimulus efforts. Remember, over the past five years, this loan demand has averaged ¥830 bln in a November month so the current drag is notable. And it is looking increasingly like investors, including boardroom directors in charge of making capital expenditure decisions, have goner on a quiet strike in China. And staying in China, things just got worse for wavering China Vanke on Friday, once one of China's largest property developers. The Shenzhen-city controlled business was unable to get bondholder support for its latest financial restructuring. So current lenders took more of its assets as security.India's CPI inflation remains very low at +0.7% in November from a year ago, up from its record low level in October. This was driven by an almost -4% fall in food prices.India's bank loan growth is back up +11.5% from a year ago and its fastest expansion this year.In Malaysia, both their retail sales (+7.2% year-on-year) and their industrial production (+6.0%) expanded at an accelerating pace in October data released overnight. In Japan, it is becoming clear (from company financial reporting) that the Trump tariffs on Japanese exports have backfired. Japanese companies raised their prices after the initial tariff hit, the Americans paid the higher prices, and when Washington backed away from some of the more extreme levels after negotiation, and those hiked prices didn't retreat. They stayed up and boosted Japanese company profits. The picture was probably similar elsewhere. The ultimate losers have been the American buyers. American reshoring has been weak, so much so that one Fed member is now more worried about jobs than inflation.Canadian building consents surprised analysts with quite a surge in October, especially residential consents for multi-unit buildings in Toronto. That drove an outsized +15% national gain from September to be +19% higher than a year ago. On an annual basis, residential consents are also up +19% with Ontario up more than +28%.The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.20%, unchanged from this time Saturday, up +6 bps from this time last week. The price of gold will start today at US$4299/oz, and up +US$5 from Saturday, up +US$84 from a week ago and back near its mid-October peak. And we should note that silver unchanged at US$62/oz.American oil prices are holding at just on US$57.50/bbl, while the international Brent price is down -50 USc at just over US$61/bbl. Both are -US$2.50 lower than a week ago. Separately, it is very noticeable that the North American rig counts are still languishing near their four year lows. No-one is rushing to invest as prices and demand stay very low.The Kiwi dollar is -10 bps softer from Saturday, now at just over 58 USc. But it is up +430 bps from a week ago. Against the Aussie we are unchanged at 87.2 AUc. Against the euro we are unchanged too at 49.4 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just under 62.2, and up +10 bps from Saturday, up +20 bps for the week. The bitcoin price starts today at US$88,831 and down -1.6% from this time Saturday, and and essentially unchanged from last week at this time. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been low, at just on +/- 0.9%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

Send us a textHow widespread is human trafficking in Canada? Two new reports offer the clearest evidence yet.According to Statistics Canada, more than 5,000 incidents of human trafficking were reported to police between 2014 and 2024, for a national average of 1.2 per 100,000 people. Among the provinces and territories, Ontario recorded the second-highest rate. The StatsCan analysis comes on the heels of another alarming report from The Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking, which revealed that annual calls to its hotline reached an all-time high. In 2024, the centre fielded more than 5,100 calls from victims, survivors and others affected by human trafficking — an average of 14 calls every day.Joining us on tonight's Closer Look to talk about the latest numbers, what they reveal — and what more can be done to help victims — is Julia Drydyk, executive director of the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking.More information about the hotline (1-833-900-1010) can be found HERE.Hosted by Village Media's Michael Friscolanti and Scott Sexsmith, and produced by Derek Turner, Closer Look is a new daily podcast that goes way beyond the headlines with insightful, in-depth conversations featuring our reporters and editors, leading experts, key stakeholders and big newsmakers.Fresh episodes drop every Monday to Friday at 7 p.m. right in your local news feed — and on the show's dedicated website: closerlookpodcast.ca. What's really driving the sudden belly fat, brain fog, and sleep chaos so many women hit in midlife? And why do the usual "eat less, move more" solutions stop working overnight? In this episode featuring Dr. Aleksandra Gajer, we dig into the hormones and peptides that may finally explain why your body feels like it's changing without your permission. Together, we unpack what's happening beneath the surface (insulin resistance, inflammation, mitochondrial slowdown, hormonal roller coasters), and ask the questions women are never told to ask. What if your symptoms aren't a lack of willpower but a lack of biochemical support? And what if the tools to help you already exist? Which peptides actually matter for women in perimenopause and menopause? Which ones help with sleep, energy, weight, stress resilience, or recovery? And how do you know when it's time to consider hormone therapy or advanced diagnostics? Get all the answers in this episode! In this episode, we uncover: How shifting hormones trigger metabolic chaos long before menopause officially begins. Why peptides like BPC-157 and MOTS-C may support healing, energy, and resilience. How inflammation, gut health, and chemical exposures silently shape weight and symptoms. Why GLP-1 medications aren't shortcuts, plus who actually benefits from them. How personalized labs and targeted therapies can prevent years of unnecessary suffering. If you're ready to understand your midlife body in a way no one has ever explained before, this episode is for you. Listen now to start feeling informed and empowered! On a recent Kreative Kontrol episode, Mark Molnar mentioned his fondness for a radio interview I once conducted with Tom Holliston, John Wright, and Rob Wright from Canada's greatest band, Nomeansno. And so, here's that interview, which occurred over breakfast at the By the Way Café in Toronto, Ontario on April 5, 2011. This week on America on the Road, guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo joins Jack Nerad as they look at a packed slate of automotive news, two major road tests, and a special design-focused interview. Jack drives the range-topping 2026 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy, while Matt reviews the redesigned 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan, a compact SUV with more power, more tech, and a more refined cabin than ever before. Jack also sits down with Ian Cartabiano, President of Calty Design, to talk about Toyota's long-running design studio, its newest work, and how design thinking translates into the next generation of vehicles.
Andrew Santino sits down with Josh Richards — creator, comedian, and entrepreneur — for a wild talk that bounces between fame, failure, and figuring out what actually matters when millions of people are watching. They get into TikTok fame, business moves, podcast drama, dating in the spotlight, and why Josh's journey from small-town Ontario to Hollywood mogul makes zero sense (in the best way).

Every U.S. president releases a national security strategy document about a year into their term, but few have made as big a splash as Donald Trump's, earlier this month. The document formally spells out much of what we've come to expect from Trump's approach to foreign policy in his second term: political relationships are transactional, and American interests take priority above all else. The document also takes particular aim at Europe, and pledges explicit support for right-wing movements abroad.Bob Rae was, until recently, Canada's ambassador to the UN, following decades of political office including premier of Ontario. He reads between the document's lines and explains what it means for Canada — and asks how much of it is actually worth taking seriously.

Barry always gets it confused with Counterpart Brewing in Niagara Falls, Ontario.Carlo told the story of Shirley Manson calling Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders to ask permission to use the lyrics “We were the talk of the town” in Special, since Manson had pulled those lyrics from The Pretenders' Talk of the Town. Hallucinations are the most recognized—and most misunderstood—symptom of schizophrenia. Movies depict them as dramatic, terrifying commands or cinematic visions, but the lived reality is far more complex. In this episode we unravel what hallucinations actually are, why they happen, and how people learn to live with them. This episode is a special feature from our sister show Inside Schizophrenia. Hosted by Rachel Star Withers (who lives with schizophrenia), with Gabe Howard as co-host. (Don't worry, new Inside Mental Health episodes return in 2026.) In this episode, Rachel shares her own experiences, from everyday “simple” hallucinations like sounds or shifting faces, to more intense, emotion-laden complex hallucinations. She challenges the assumption that hallucinations are always violent or dangerous—and breaks down the critical differences between hallucinations and sensory disturbances. Expert guest Dr. Paul Fitzgerald joins the conversation to explain how the brain creates these perceptual misfires, why hallucinations in schizophrenia differ from those caused by grief, sleep deprivation, or drugs, and what current research reveals about how universal these experiences are across different cultures and countries. Listener Takeaways The difference between simple vs. complex hallucinations Why hallucinations in schizophrenia feel different from drug- or grief-based ones Why reducing—not eliminating—hallucinations is often the realistic recovery goal How CBT and coping strategies help reduce fear and regain control Whether you live with schizophrenia, love someone who does, or are simply curious about how the brain works, this episode offers clarity, compassion, and surprising insights you won't forget. Guest, Professor Paul Fitzgerald, completed his medical degree at Monash University and subsequently a Master of Psychological Medicine whilst completing psychiatric training. He then undertook a Clinical and Research Fellowship at the University of Toronto and The Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. On returning to Melbourne, he worked as a psychiatrist and completed a PhD in transcranial magnetic stimulation in schizophrenia. Since completing this PhD, he has developed a substantial research program including a team of over 25 psychiatrists, registrars, postdoctoral researchers, research assistants, research nurses, and students. Professor Fitzgerald runs a research program across both MAPrc and Epworth Clinic using brain stimulation and neuroimaging techniques including transcranial magnetic stimulation, functional and structural MRI, EEG, and near infrared spectroscopy. The primary focus of this program is on the development of new brain stimulation-based treatments for psychiatric disorders. Guest host, Rachel Star Withers, creates videos documenting her schizophrenia, ways to manage, and let others like her know they're not alone and can still live an amazing life. She has written “Lil Broken Star: Understanding Schizophrenia for Kids” and a tool for schizophrenics, “To See in the Dark: Hallucination and Delusion Journal.” Learn more at RachelStarLive.com. Lindsay is joined by author Cinda Gault to discuss her book, “A Small Compass.” In 1806, Isobel Gunn is staring down the inevitability of a spinster's farm life in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, often referred to as the Island of Women. At the same time and across the ocean in Maskinongé, Quebec, Marie-Anne Gaboury is facing the prospect that her dashing new coureur de bois husband will leave her a fur trade widow when he returns west to the wilderness. Both women launch themselves on perilous voyages that will change them forever and transform them into legends. A Small Compass is the story of the first two women to venture into the Canadian wilderness, where they meet and must help each other battle what they know and what they don't to defend all they love. Cinda Gault holds a Ph.D. in English, specializing in Canadian national identity issues in women's writing of the 1960s and 1970s. She teaches and writes about Canadian literature and lives in Toronto, Ontario. Her fiction includes This Godforsaken Place, a historical novel set in 1885 against a background of the Louis Riel rebellion with appearances by Riel's general, Gabriel Dumont, and Wild Bill Cody's Wild West Show star Annie Oakley. Brixton Metals CEO Gary Thompson joins the show to break down the company's newest discovery at the Thorn Project in northwestern British Columbia — the Tempest copper-gold-silver porphyry system, announced in early December. This marks the second new porphyry discovery at Thorn in just over a year, following the Catalyst discovery reported in late October (TSX-V: BBB).Drawing on Brixton's latest news release and the company's December 2025 corporate presentation, the discussion outlines how Tempest emerged from a combination of IP geophysics, soil and rock geochemistry, and first-pass drilling. Thompson explains that Tempest hosts a nearly 2 km² IP anomaly, slightly larger than Catalyst's ~1.4 km² footprint, and that both zones lie roughly 2 km apart within what is shaping up to be a multi-center, 8–10 km porphyry corridor at Thorn.Thompson details the results from Hole THN24-601 at Tempest, which cut intervals of porphyry-style veining and alteration with copper-gold mineralization, including intercepts such as 16.6 m of 0.63% CuEq, 27 m of ~0.40% CuEq, and a broader 90 m averaging ~0.33% CuEq. He notes the intriguing near 1:1 gold-to-copper ratio, distinguishing Tempest and Catalyst from the deeper, more copper-dominant Camp Creek system. The geology suggests interlayered reactive and less-reactive volcanic phases, with age-dating underway to determine how these systems relate temporally. The conversation expands to Brixton's broader exploration strategy for 2026:• Additional drilling at Tempest and Catalyst, where large footprints and limited drilling create substantial open-ended potential.• Evaluating deeper targets at Trapper, where notable high-grade gold hits were generated in 2025.• Continued shallow drilling at Camp Creek to follow up on near-surface breccia- and vein-hosted gold-silver-copper zones.• Budget ambitions of roughly $10M, dependent on market conditions.Thompson also provides an update on the Langis Silver Project in Ontario. With silver recently breaking through US$60/oz, Brixton is mobilizing a drill program (targeting mid-January) to extend the high-grade native silver veins around historic workings that previously produced 10.5 Moz at ~25 oz/t. With shallow drilling costs around $200/m, Langis offers high-impact, low-cost exploration upside, with resource delineation now firmly in sight. The episode wraps with expected near-term news flow: remaining drill results from Trapper and Camp Creek, a comprehensive geochemical dataset, and pending high-grade silver assays from Langis in early 2026.
Using Etsy for pattern sales, Patreon for teaching classes and Instagram for promoting her artwork, Hana Hastings, Sand and Fire Works, Grimsby, Ontario, Canada, has acquired a substantial following for her offerings in stained glass. Wanting to differentiate herself from the more traditional glass designs and commonly seen pattern work, Hastings brought nature and natural subjects into the homes of her patrons by experimenting with 3D sculpture and unique textures and colors of glass. Mastering her marketing efforts on social media, the artist grew a following significant enough to dedicate full-time hours to her craft and begin teaching her techniques online to other budding glass artists. Says Hastings: "I've only been a full-time glass artist for five months after nearly two decades of being a hobbyist and in business for six years total. In 2026, I hope to focus less on producing work for sale and more on artistic exploration in my chosen semi-sculptural approach to the Tiffany technique. I'm also absolutely fixated on sustainability in glass art and am working towards being a fully no waste studio." Inspired by nature and her "dangerously vast" collection of houseplants, Hastings developed a series of 3D sculptures in rarely seen textures and colors of glass. She made a name for herself via this unusual and modern take on design in the local glass scene as well as the online sphere. Her new work sells out on Instagram in as little as six minutes on release. With over 270K followers on that platform, Hastings is one of the most followed glass crafters of today. Hastings' work is deeply personal, a connection with glass rooted in the artisan legacy of her grandfather and teacher, Seamus. They spent countless hours of her childhood working together, and those moments shaped her love of glass and knowledge of the craft. Two decades later, the artist channels that heritage into her own practice, designing original work and small sculptures inspired by the forms, geometry and textures found in the natural world.
