In this episode of A Little Faith, Michael interviews Bro. Russell Dawes from Toronto, Ontario, who attends the Toronto East (formerly Cobourg) Ecclesia and shares his journey into the Christadelphian community. Russell, nearly 96, was not raised religious but began seeking answers during World War II, especially about death and belief. After meeting his wife Muriel in 1950 and being influenced by her strong faith, he began studying Scripture, including reading “Elpis Israel” with a Bible and dictionary, and was baptized in 1953. He reflects on how Bible schools attended yearly from 1960 for decades became a defining spiritual “eureka” and how international travel for work allowed him to fellowship with Christadelphians worldwide, and created lifelong friendships. Russell also describes raising baptized children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and emphasizes the lasting importance of close, spiritually minded relationships and ecclesial fellowship. Russell is an example to all of us about spiritual devotion, and devotion in marriage.

A fragmented gold system that's only been drilled to 400 metres Rouyn sits on the Piché Group trend within the Cadillac–Larder Lake fault zone, in the same neighbourhood as Abitibi giants such as Canadian Malartic, LaRonde, Lapa and Kerr-Addison, which together account for roughly 200 million ounces mined over the past century. Keegan says the project's shallow drill depth reflects a century of disjointed ownership rather than poor geology: 73 separate mining claims were only consolidated under one owner in recent years, and the ground was mined intermittently in the 1950s and 1980s during periods of low gold prices rather than being systematically explored. Two rigs turning around the clock, with a third and fourth under consideration Lac Gold currently has two diamond rigs running 24/7 at Rouyn, advancing roughly 200 metres a day combined, with a third rig being brought on and a fourth available if the economics stack up. Cold Québec winters don't interrupt the program — the frozen ground makes drilling easier. Results to date show continuity, width and grade in known zones, while step-out holes are revealing broad mineralised halos that vector toward high-grade shoots, across at least 150 targets identified along the deposit's six-kilometre strike. Valuation sits well below peers, with two paths to a re-rate At a market capitalisation of roughly A$70 million against 1.66 million ounces, Lac Gold is trading at about A$42 an ounce in the ground, versus a peer average Stocks puts at two to three times that level. Management frames the opportunity in two parts: closing that valuation gap on the existing resource, and applying the same (or a better) per-ounce multiple to new ounces added through the drill bit. A second growth option at Golden Patricia, near Pickle Lake Alongside Rouyn, Lac Gold holds the Pickle Lake Gold Project in Ontario, inherited through the Ardiden merger. The company has since acquired the historic, high-grade Golden Patricia deposit from Barrick, a past producer that yielded gold at an average grade of around 16.5 grams per tonne. Historical data from the site is being digitised, with a modest ground program of roughly 5,000 metres of drilling planned once that work is complete.

For a week straight, Andrew watched his own sky turn orange outside Toronto as smoke from nearly 900 wildfires burning across Canada, most of them following the boreal forest from the east coast to Northwestern Ontario, drifted south into the US and back again. He walks through what actually happened on the ground: which towns and First Nations were evacuated, how bad the air quality got (Toronto briefly had the worst AQI in the world), and why northwestern Ontario, not a hugely populated area but home to vulnerable First Nations communities, bore the brunt of it. Then he digs into why this keeps happening. Most of Ontario's fires this season were sparked by lightning, not arson, despite conspiracy theories claiming otherwise (arson accounts for well under a quarter of cases). An active El Nino is drying things out further, and climate change is intensifying the underlying heat and dryness that let these fires spread. Andrew also connects the dots to the ocean directly: the boreal forest is one of the planet's biggest carbon sinks, and when it burns that stored carbon heads into the atmosphere, where roughly a quarter of it eventually gets absorbed by the ocean, driving further acidification. The back half of the episode gets political. Ontario slashed its emergency firefighting budget from $271 million spent in 2025-26 down to $150 million budgeted for 2026-27, even as Premier Doug Ford defends the province's readiness. Meanwhile, US President Trump and several senators have floated tariffs and sanctions against Canada over the smoke, a move Andrew calls scientifically and diplomatically backwards given how often Canada and the US send firefighters and equipment across the border to help each other. He closes with concrete steps listeners can take, from checking air quality indexes to contacting elected officials about wildfire funding. US tariffs and sanctions threats against Canada over the smoke ignore how often the two countries help each other fight fires, including the loss of a Canadian firefighter in Colorado this year. Individual actions still matter: check air quality indexes before extended time outdoors, follow evacuation orders immediately if you're in a fire zone, keep a 72-hour go bag ready, and contact your elected officials if wildfire underfunding frustrates you. Pueblo leaders and environmentalists are angry that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released an environmental assessment last week with the intent of eliminating a buffer around Chaco Culture National Historical Park that has prevented oil and gas leasing. As KUNM's Jeanette DeDios (Jicarilla Apache and Diné) reports, BLM is offering just two weeks for public comment on the report. A Biden administration order placed a 20-year ban on oil and gas development on federal lands within 10 miles of Chaco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This upset some Navajo communities who rely on royalty payments and infrastructure from oil and gas for their livelihoods. President Buu Nygren said thousands of Navajo oil and gas allottees would be negatively impacted by the decision. But in April, the BLM gave the public one week to comment on a proposal to expand oil and gas leasing around Chaco. The current proposed environmental assessment has three options: leave the buffer intact, reduce it to five miles, or remove all protections. Brian Vallo (Acoma Pueblo), chairman for the Chaco Heritage Tribal Association, says the Trump administration is not working with Pueblo communities, despite tribes working together to create an ethnographic study on why this landscape is vital to Native cultures. The study is a first of its kind, he says, and was conducted by the Pueblos themselves. “So it really traces the ethnography of this cultural and sacred landscape from our present-day communities to the great houses in Chaco, but also everything in between, pilgrimage trails, shrines, sacred sites, springs, and other places that are significant to our continued observance and practice of our own traditions and you know, Indigenous way of life.” Vallo says the association is frustrated that the federal government is not adhering to a data-sharing agreement and not considering information from this ethnographic study, but moving forward with a draft environmental assessment. “All of humanity, the land, and the resources, the animals, the water. All of those things have connection, and that connection is maintained through the generations of those of us who are the practitioners, those of us who are the cultural leaders, and the greater Pueblo community as well.” Members of New Mexico's congressional delegation have also condemned the BLM announcement as a move to push for more oil and gas drilling. The All Pueblo Council of Governors has continued to invite Secretary of Interior Doug Burgum to visit Chaco Canyon and hold a consultation with Pueblo members, but he has not responded. Vallo says young folks at Acoma are already mobilizing. “Young people from within our community who are going door to door with laptops and or notebooks to encourage tribal members to submit letters.” Public comment closes on July 29. Northern Ontario is one of the regions that has been hardest hit. One Indigenous community there has been destroyed. And as Dan Karpenchuk reports, Indigenous leaders are calling on the federal government in Ottawa for more support. At least one small first nation in northern Ontario has burned to the ground by a devastating wildfire, which is one of nearly 200 alone burning in the province. Residents fled the Namaygoosisagagun First Nation by boat on Collins Lake, many having only a few minutes to gather some personal belongings, according to Chief Helen Paavola. “It was just a matter of minutes before my members would have died. And even during that whole time, there was no help.” Namaygoosisagagun, also known as Collins First Nation, is only one of ten communities, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, that have been evacuated as wildfires rip through the region. Namaygoosisagagun is now is ashes – and its residents say they face an uncertain future. The Assembly of First Nations is calling on Ottawa for help including financial support. Linda Debassige is the grand chief of the Anishnabek Nation. She says when the wildfire first approached the community, the chief herself tried to contact government officials, but they said they were not aware of the fire. “And so, had the community waited for the official emergency response activiation, this would be a recovery mission at this point in time, which is unfathomable.” Debassige says the community now needs accommodations, food, and especially a commitment to support rebuilding. One of the problems is that the Namaygoosisagagun is not federally recognized as an official Indigenous first nation. The remote first nation, more than 700 miles north of Toronto, has no road access. Debassige says the Anishnabek Nation Grand Council, which includes 39 first nations, does recognize it and is supporting members by providing accommodation, food, and clothing. Ralph Wigboldus has been in the boiling water longer than most of us. A senior pastor in Woodstock, Ontario, and a six-year veteran of the Council of Delegates, he came to Synod 2026 tired and half-hoping someone else would carry the load. He left overjoyed. In Part 1 of our conversation, Ralph gives American listeners something they rarely hear clearly: the Canadian side of the last decade, from the fight over financial autonomy to the push for a separate, more progressive denomination that finally fell flat.
