Team owner Edward O'Neil turns to former coach Jimmy McGinty, played by Gene Hackman. McGinty agrees—but only if he gets to choose his own players. At the top of his list is Shane Falco, played by Keanu Reeves. Falco was once a promising quarterback, but after a disastrous college performance, his football career fell apart. By the time McGinty finds him, he's scraping barnacles off boats. But McGinty sees something in Falco that Falco doesn't necessarily see in himself. Point Break 1991 Review is here, and Born to Watch is heading into the surf with Johnny Utah, Bodhi and the Ex-Presidents. Whitey, Dan, Gow and Damo revisit Kathryn Bigelow's action film to find out whether its mix of bank robberies, beach culture and skydiving still delivers. This is the movie review podcast where we don't take the movies or ourselves too seriously, and a film this gloriously committed to its own intensity gives us plenty to work with.For Whitey, Point Break was a video shop favourite and an easy Sunday afternoon watch. Dan and Gow have returned to it plenty of times over the years. Damo, despite being the crew's actual surfer, has barely revisited it since seeing it at the cinema. That makes for an interesting question: does knowing your way around a wave make this film more exciting, or make its surfing scenes impossible to ignore?Keanu Reeves plays Johnny Utah, a former college quarterback turned FBI agent who goes undercover among Los Angeles surfers. Patrick Swayze is Bodhi, the magnetic thrill-seeker at the centre of a crew that seems to live for the next wave. Gary Busey joins the ride as Utah's partner, Angelo Pappas. The boys get into the cast, the chemistry and the peculiar power Bodhi has to make everyone around him listen when he starts talking about freedom.They also take a close look at Kathryn Bigelow's direction. The action has a physical energy that helped make Point Break a favourite for a generation of viewers. But how much of the film holds together once the adrenaline wears off? The crew picks through the undercover investigation, the shifting pace of the story, and an ending that gives them plenty to discuss.Then Damo and Dan bring some surfing knowledge to the table. Watch closely, and a rider can appear to change stance, while separate waves seem to become one continuous ride. The night surfing draws particular attention. Whitey remembers being swept up in the film when he was younger, but Damo sees details that took him straight out of it. It turns into a lively argument about whether a film needs to get the sport right when the rest of the experience is this entertaining.Naturally, the conversation takes a few detours. There are memories of seeing the film at the cinema, stories from Whitey's video shop days, plenty of Patrick Swayze appreciation and a debate over Keanu's performance. The boys find time for Gary Busey, Australian accents and the question of which cast member really deserves to be called the star of the show. Damo also brings a Point Break inspired credit song that takes the episode somewhere even Johnny Utah might not have expected.The crew agrees on some moments and splits sharply on others. Nostalgia plays a part, especially for those who grew up with the film close at hand, but nobody lets a favourite movie escape a proper examination. From the beach fights to the airborne thrills, they revisit what makes Point Break so memorable and where it asks the audience to go along for the ride.There's also Film School for F-Wits and, of course, the Rank Bank. The boys have plenty to say about where this one belongs, but you'll have to listen to hear how the debate plays out. Hey Vintage Sand fans! Hope the summer was relaxing, fun, and adventurous. An offbeat recommendation to begin—even if you're not a fan, as a film lover you must see the first half hour of this summer's "Minions and Monsters", which pays gentle comic tribute to the entire history of film from Muybridge's experiments through "Citizen Kane", name-checking the Lumieres, Méliès, Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd, and riffing like "Singin' in the Rain" and "Babylon" on the impact of the arrival of sound in Hollywood. Love or hate the little yellow guys, here are some filmmakers who truly love film and film history! For the sixth time in the history of the podcast, Team Vintage Sand returns to one of its most popular formats: the Hidden Gems episode. As we did in episodes 11, 30, 40, 53, and 64 (take notes—there will be a quiz), we each choose one film to discuss that we feel has been underappreciated and overlooked by the madding crowd yearning to see anything besides a prequel, sequel, spinoff, or reboot. This time around, by pure coincidence, the episode features three films that are relatively similar in their lightness of tone, though only one might be described as a pure comedy, albeit a dark one. That would be Michael's pick, Lawrence Kasdan's "I Love You to Death" from 1990. Featuring an unbelievable cast including Kevin Kline (fresh off his Oscar win for "A Fish Called Wanda"), the sublime Tracey Ullman in her first big-screen performance, as well as Joan Plowright (who steals the film), River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves and William Hurt, the film puts a black comedy twist on the real-life story of a pizzeria-owning, philandering husband, and his wife, who makes repeated and increasingly violent unsuccessful attempts to kill him. John shines the spotlight on "The Nice Guys", the 2016 action comedy by Shane Black starring Ryan Gosling and a heavyset, Bronx-accented Russell Crowe. The film features a stellar supporting cast including Keith David, Margaret Qualley, Kim Basinger, and a wonderful performance by Angourie Rice as Gosling's daughter. Set in LA in 1977, it is a compendium of every noirish LA film ever made, from "Chinatown" to "Lebowski" to "Boogie Nights" to "Pulp Fiction" to "The Long Goodbye". As always with Black, the writing can be clunky and the tonal shifts are sometimes awkward. But the film is more than worthwhile for every priceless moment that Gosling and Crowe are together on screen; they are probably the best buddy pair featured in Black's long list of buddy action comedies. I focus on the film that brought an abrupt end to the roll Alan Rudolph was on in the mid-80's, from which the Altman disciple and wannabe never really recovered: 1987's "Made in Heaven". The story of a romance (featuring Tim Hutton and Kelly McGillis) kindled in the Afterlife but which extends from this world to the next, the film, like another 1987 release "The Princess Bride", unironically and sweetly makes the case for the power of True Love, even over death. How you feel about that idea will largely determine your reaction to Rudolph's film; there are plot holes as wide as the Pearly Gates themselves, and some questionable writing here and there. But the other thing the film has going for it is its focus on music, especially the concluding song “We've Never Danced”, written by Neil Young (who has a cameo) and sung by the wondrous Martha Davis, the lead singer of early-80's faves The Motels. So please enjoy visiting and/or revisiting these films, check out that opening of the Minions film, and celebrate the new school year by recommitting to your love of film and seeing movies in theaters. And whatever the rest of 2026 brings us in the world of film, count on Team Vintage Sand to be your trusty sherpas for the journey.

There were some musical highs, some musical... let's call them learning opportunities... and the revelation that Jo Dee Messina may have discovered the ultimate cruise hack: perform before the ship leaves and then GET OFF THE BOAT.Gretchen Wilson, meanwhile, delivered one of Moon's highlights of the entire trip with a killer performance and band. Unfortunately, the actual cruise experience wasn't getting the same review. We're talking pricey Wi-Fi that barely worked, a balcony-room mix-up, limited excursion options, fake Cuban cigars, a stage built over the pool and a tiny backup pool populated by people who apparently had no interest in ever getting out.From there, this funny podcast turns into a tour of America's most overrated attractions. Four Corners gets roasted. Mount Rushmore gets called smaller than expected. Times Square takes a hit. The Las Vegas Strip lands at the top of the list. Lern also reveals she once got emotional seeing Chicago's Bean, proving once again that public art can be powerful when it looks like a gigantic piece of silver produce.A swimmer at Lake Tahoe reportedly gets attacked by an otter and requires 38 stitches, prompting Rafe to immediately begin defending the otter because apparently wildlife now has legal representation on The Rizzuto Show. Then there's a possible shark attack near the Massachusetts location associated with Jaws, followed by the deeply upsetting story of a woman waking from a dream about a mouse crawling toward her mouth... only to discover there was actually a BAT near her mouth.We also discover a Hawaiian shirt designed to confuse AI-powered surveillance cameras, which means Weird Al may have been preparing for the surveillance state this entire time.Missouri and Illinois get dragged into America's "worst vibes" rankings before the crew investigates which states hate each other the most. Missouri's answer? Kansas. Obviously. Somewhere, a Star Wars fan just felt a disturbance in the Force.Then we discover that Americans apparently hit an energy wall around 2:48 in the afternoon, which explains basically every email you've ever received after lunch. Rafe's sleep schedule is wrecked, Lern is fighting afternoon cravings with hard-boiled eggs, and that leads to perhaps the most important culinary advice ever delivered on a funny podcast: if you've already hard-boiled the egg, you're halfway to a deviled egg.That discussion somehow turns into stale cereal confessions. Lern admits to eating old strawberry vanilla Chex after band practice while Rafe reveals that he knowingly ate stale Pops AND stale Golden Grahams. This is less a morning show and more four adults slowly admitting things that should probably stay between themselves and their pantries.Then it's time for Crap on Celebrities, where things get appropriately ridiculous.
