US Supreme Court upholds birthright citizenship

The Supreme Court's ruling that babies born in the US have a constitutional right to citizenship is a major setback for President Trump's immigration agenda, and has been welcomed by civil rights groups. Donald Trump said the court's decision was "too bad" and vowed to continue to fight to end birthright citizenship through legislation. Also: Spain is taking a very different approach to immigration as more than one million undocumented migrants and asylum seekers apply for legal status under a government scheme. A week on from the earthquakes in Venezuela, a three year old boy has pulled alive from the rubble. Tanzanian authorities say they are doing everything they can to prevent the Ebola virus arriving there from neighbouring countries. We hear the stories of some women in Ukraine who are turning to beauty and fashion as a way of dealing with the trauma of war. Despite huge excitement about her return to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, Serena Williams is knocked out in the first round by the 20-year-old Australian player Maya Joint. And one of the greatest basketball players of all time, LeBron James, is on the move to find a new team. The Global News Podcast brings you the breaking news you need to hear, as it happens. Catherine, David and Matt react to Serena Williams' singles return as she lost in three sets on Centre Court to Maya Joint. In what way did this match and occasion actually exceed our expectations? How did Joint manage to overcome her nerves to play so well and win? Would playing a warm-up tournament have helped Serena? And what might the rest of her summer look like? We then wrap up the other women's results including an emotional Iga Swiatek passing a difficult test as defending champion against Taylor Townsend, Madison Keys and Elena Rybakina both surviving despite inconsistent displays, a shock defeat for Elina Svitolina, and a brilliant comeback by Jasmine Paolini. In part two (47:30), we turn our attention to the men's draw and Taylor Fritz's blazer, Ben Shelton's big missed opportunity, and a special win for Matteo Berrettini in four tiebreaks over Stan Wawrinka. Serena Williams will be back at Wimbledon playing singles for the first time since 2022!At 44 years old, she played some really good tennis with Mboko before the Canadian injured her knee at Queens. This decision to come back and even play singles at the most well-known tennis tournament in the world is intriguing: what does she want to get from this? While it's practically impossible to see Serena winning Wimbledon, especially after her last win coming seven years ago, plus her age, I still can't complain. She will be back, she will be roaring, involved and full of energy in a way only Serena Williams can be.I hope for at least one win. It will be EPIC.I also talk a bit about how so many promising young women are making good progress on the grass this year, notably Berlin champion Linda Noskova, Berlin semi-finalist (l. Noskova) Alex Eala, and 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu. All players with very different styles, different career trajectories, but with great potential to make the next 10-15 years at the WTA be really awesome and competitive.Favourite this podcast if you like our work :)SUBSCRIBE to the YouTube channel!Follow TENNIS AND BAGELS!Twitter/X: https://x.com/TennisAndBAGELSAndre:Twitter/X - https://x.com/RolembergAndreBlueSky Social: https://bsky.app/profile/andrerolemberg.bsky.socialVansh: https://x.com/vanshv2kOwen (BlueSky Social): https://bsky.app/profile/owensports.bsky.socialSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels.
