The Mind: Friend or EnemyWho is actually running your life—you, or your mind?The mind is constantly talking to us.I want this.I don't like that.I'm worried about this.I need to do that.What will people think of me?And very often, we simply follow where it leads. And we're often told: “Follow your dreams.” But should every desire that enters our mind really be followed?The Bhagavad-gita presents a sobering truth:“For one who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, the mind will remain the greatest enemy.”Our desires, choices, words and actions are profoundly influenced by what is happening within the mind. And those actions, in turn, shape the direction of our lives.So should we really “follow our dreams” simply because the mind produces them?Or should we first ask: Where is this desire taking me?Even Arjuna tells Krishna that controlling the restless mind seems as difficult as controlling the wind. Krishna acknowledges the difficulty—but says it can be done through practice and detachment.The yogic understanding goes even deeper.You are not your mind.Thoughts come and go. Desires arise and disappear. Emotions change. Memories surface and fade. Karma, Duty, Detachment, acting without entanglementCan you live in this world, fulfill your responsibilities—and still become spiritually free?Arjuna thought the answer might be no.Faced with the terrible consequences of battle, he wanted to walk away from everything—to renounce his duty and retreat from the world.But Krishna told him something surprising:Simply giving up action will not free you from karma.We cannot actually stop acting. We work, eat, speak, raise families, form relationships, make decisions and pursue goals. And according to the Bhagavad-gita, every action produces consequences—karma-phalam, the fruits of our actions.So how do we act without becoming increasingly entangled?Krishna presents the path of karma-yoga.The solution isn't necessarily to abandon your job, family or responsibilities. It is to transform the consciousness with which you perform them.Working, cooking, cleaning, raising children, giving to others—even our closest relationships—can become part of spiritual life when they are no longer centered simply on me and what I want, but are offered in loving service to the Supreme.This is a radically different idea of renunciation.You don't necessarily renounce the activity. You renounce the selfishness behind it.Instead of asking, “What am I going to get from this?” we begin asking, “How can what I do become an offering?”And ultimately the Bhagavad-gita takes us beyond simply escaping karma.It asks three profound questions:What is my essence?What is my natural position? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Natasha Tynes, author of the book Karma Unleashed. Natasha Tynes is a Jordanian-American author and communications professional who owns and operates a digital media agency, Suburban Media Group. She has over twenty years of experience working as a journalist, writer and social media manager. She's a regular contributor to a number of publications inside and outside the United States. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, Nature Magazine, Elle Magazine, The Post, Esquire magazine, and Aljazeera, among others and she's appeared on shows like Larry King Live and CBS's Morning Show.   She also hosts the podcast, Read and Write with Natasha, where she talks with authors, publishers, and book marketers around the world. She's a fiction writer too.   In my book review, I stated Karma Unleashed is a contemporary novel by Natasha Tynes. We meet Karma, a young woman from Bilaq Iran who has a gift - or a curse - depending on how you look at it. She can often see the future. She quickly learns that others do not understand her gift. Her mother teaches her to keep it hidden. However, hard as she tries, Karma often feels the need to intervene, especially when the vision is tragic. Inevitably, this leads to misunderstandings and even danger.   She moves to America to start a new life with her husband, but soon, everything she understands about life is turned upside down. She meets Danielle who seems to know of Karma's power and also appears to have a darker side. Karma must decide to run from her gift or embrace it no matter where it leads. The twist at the end has left me a bit unsettled - and almost certain there will be a sequel!   My biggest takeaway? I don't want to know the future. Not mine or anyone else's. And if I could see the future, the likelihood is that I couldn't change it. Juan sources a company where a $2 million tooling quote sits against a 150-unit build year.His model is not a smarter algorithm. It is a stronger network. AI clears the noise, and the non-value-added work, and the doors still open the old way, through a knock, an introduction, and a supplier who wants a shot at ultra-luxury. Juan calls it HI. Human intelligence.That approach got tested. Karma pulled a structural program out of Northern Europe, where the Fisker-era extruders had merged, closed, or scrapped the tooling, and localized it with a supplier in Tijuana, two hours down the road. Requalification finished. The tooling was paid for. Then the tariffs on Mexico landed. Juan ran the numbers, saw that China carried heavier-duty and domestic quotes at 10 times the cost, and chose to stay and work the problem with the supplier.What came out of it is a different kind of negotiation. Karma hands the supplier the schedule: deliver 100 parts by the date, and run the job at 1:00 in the morning if that protects the capacity, paying their bills.Juan is also clear that Karma is not a pure EV. The motors are electric, and the engine exists only to charge the battery, which takes charging infrastructure out of the decision, where it still stops buyers.Most supply chain leaders will never buy at 150 units a year, and the lesson holds anyway. When volume stops doing the negotiating, what is left is the relationship, the speed of the call, and whether the supplier believes the business is going somewhere. Full Transcript Below: Understanding God’s CharacterBy Vivian Bricker Bible Reading:“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). In my opinion, the scariest thing in the world is the unknown. Whether that be an undiagnosed illness, starting over in a new city, or thinking about the future, the unknown can be terrifying. None of us can truly know what is ahead because we are not the ones in control. For some of us, there will be good times ahead and for others, there will be hard times. One cannot be dogmatic and say that those who have good times are in the will of God and those who are going through tough times are not. It is never within God’s will for us to be in pain, to be depressed, or to be sick. He never intended for us to go through any of these things, and it is not right for people to believe in the ideology that if you do good, good returns to you from God and if you do bad, bad returns to you from God. This is not biblical as this is actually a belief in karma. Karma is part of the religious beliefs contained within Hinduism and Buddhism. Although karma has become popularized within mainstream media, Christ followers do not need to endorse it. Karma is refuted in the Bible as Psalm 103:10-11 says, “he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.” Therefore, we don’t need to say that God blesses certain people while cursing others. The aspects of blessings and curses based on your actions were true within the Mosaic Covenant, but it is not true for us today. We are under the New Covenant by the blood of Jesus (Luke 22:20). Within the Mosaic Covenant, Israel was petitioned to obey God, and blessings would come to them; however, if they did not obey God and did evil, curses would come into their midst. Since we are not under the Mosaic Covenant, we don’t need to hold ourselves or others to this type of thinking. If we are having dreadful things happening in our lives, they are not caused by God. And if we are having good things happening in our lives, we cannot always be dogmatic to say it is caused by God either. To say that “God has blessed me because I’m doing well, but He has cursed you because you are not doing well” is not rooted in biblical truth. This is why Christians need to be more aware and not to flaunt things they believe are blessings. This only gives the idea that if you are struggling, you have done something terrible in the eyes of God, and you must be cursed. As Christ followers, this type of thinking needs to end. We all have free will, and with it, we have chosen to do terrible things (Romans 3:23). Additionally, we live in a fallen world that is covered in sin. This is why we shouldn’t be quick to say, “It is God’s will for you to suffer from (fill in the blank).” God never intended for evil, sin, or death to be in the world. He wanted us to live in perfect harmony with Him in the Garden of Eden. Intersecting Faith & Life: The Bible tells us, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). God’s character is found in love. Since God is love, why do we believe the lie that He brings curses into our lives or into the lives of others? This goes against His very nature. God is love, and He is not going to bring harm into our lives. As Christ followers, we need to be aware of who God is and His characteristics, as this can help us weed out lies that pull us away from Him. Even well-meaning Christ followers can say unhelpful and unbiblical things, which is why we must be level-headed and fully understand the Bible ourselves. Regardless of what you are going through, remember the truth that God is love, and you are loved by Him, and neither of these things will ever change.
