“Even if you don't have the resources or time for a six-month trek, start where you are, with what you have. Every step outside is a step toward a life more fulfilled.” Facebook Twitter Instagram Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Sign up for my Newsletter HERE I'd love to hear your feedback about the show! You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com How stuffing food into trash bags and hiking in tennis shoes planted the seed for a life of adventure. What Happened: Growing up, my family loved our little camping trips, and on one of them, my brothers and I convinced our parents to let us hike part of the Appalachian Trail overnight. (Big mistake — at least for our muscles.) We were wildly unprepared: sneakers from Kmart, trash bags over our shoulders instead of proper packs, and enough sore muscles to last a lifetime. I thought I was dying — but deep down, something lit up inside me. Even though every bone in my body hurt (and we ate an entire cooler of food afterward like ravenous raccoons), that night planted a seed. Over the years, I kept going back. Again and again. And that love for adventure grew into a walk across the entire Appalachian Trail… and eventually into fundraising hikes, family treks, bestselling books, and even TEDx talks. Not bad for a kid with a trash bag and a dream, right? Principle: Sometimes, the thing that feels the hardest at the beginning — the thing you think you're the worst at — is actually pointing straight at your biggest passion. Adventure (and success) doesn't start with the perfect gear, the perfect timing, or even knowing what you're doing. It starts by taking that messy, imperfect first step. And when you lean into it — not run away because it's hard — it can completely change your life. Transition: Most people think they have to have it all figured out before they start — the perfect trail shoes, the best plan, the ideal conditions. But waiting until you're "ready" is just another way of letting your dreams collect dust. If you've been feeling stuck, thinking you can't "start until" you have everything lined up… you're holding yourself back from the adventure that could change everything. That's why: That's why in this episode of the Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast, we sat down with Jeff Alt to dig deep into how those messy, unglamorous first steps can transform into a life filled with meaning, impact, and unforgettable stories. You'll hear how Jeff turned a painful first hike into a movement, and why you don't need perfect gear, perfect conditions, or perfect timing to build an extraordinary adventure life. Call to Action (PAS framework in one sentence): If you're tired of feeling stuck, waiting for the “right” time to start your dream adventure (pain), and you're sick of watching opportunities pass you by while you hesitate (agitate), listen to this episode now and discover why the imperfect first step is the one that matters most (solution). Show Notes If you could give one piece of advice to someone who's hesitant to get started, whether it's solo hiking or taking their family on hikes, long distance treks, what would you tell 'em? Partner up with somebody who's done it. Or, if you've never been hiking you know, there, there's lots of outdoor clubs online clubs and they're, they're based in every city USA. Join that group, go to that talk at the outfitter. You know, a lot of your fears will be overcome just by hearing. "Oh. That's how you do that. Oh, you have to filter the water before you drink it." And then if you're still like, I'm afraid to do this alone. Well, they say you shouldn't. Technically, go out backpacking alone anyway, right? So Go with a seasoned person for a night or two and mm-hmm. And learn the basics before you head off with your own family. Do you have a favorite book? Yes. Peter Jenkins, a Walk Across America What about your favorite piece of outdoor gear? Under a hundred dollars? Sea to Summit Air pillow.
Alfredo Sainz's grandfather came to US from Chihuahua, Mexico, in the Bracero Program during World War II. That family then migrated from El Paso, Texas, through New Mexico and Southern California, then as far north as San Francisco. In this episode, get to know Fredo and his 415 Zine co-founder and co-publisher, Laine Wiesemann. We begin Part 1 with Fredo. Fredo and his brother were his family's first US-born members, making them both Chicanos. Most of his mom's family immigrated to the US, but many family members on his dad's side still live in Mexico, mostly in Guadalajara. His grandfather followed the work, which lead him to San Francisco in 1946. He worked in construction, eventually bringing his wife and children, including Fredo's mom, to live with him. Fredo's family settled in Excelsior near Crocker-Amazon Park. He attended Sacred Heart. After high school, he moved to Daly City and then the Sunset, where he lives today. Many of his high school classmates are still in SF. He's never lived anywhere else, though his family did spend summers in Mexico, something Fredo remembers fondly. His grandfather still had a ranch there where they would stay. They'd set out right when the school year ended, and return right before the fall semester began, with a side trip to K-Mart for school clothes, of course. I ask Fredo if he's ever been tempted to live somewhere else. He expounds on an emphatic “No!” Then he talks about a BBQ spot out near the ocean close to Doggie Diner where he was introduced to peach cobbler. Next, we turn to Laine and her story. She's from the Central Valley—Sanger, California, near Fresno. The family later moved north to Linden, near Stockton. Both her parents were train engineers. Her mom was one of the first women engineers, in fact. Laine visited San Francisco a lot during her high school years. She remembers crossing the Bay Bridge and being awed. She has memories of her dad taking her and a friend to Amoeba Records. She'd been doing art since she was little, but really started getting into it when she was in high school. In her freshman year, she did commissions. After graduation, she moved to Chico, where she says she “learned how to party.” A friend of hers had moved to The City and her boss was coming here, so, with those things in mind, Laine decided it was time. She moved to San Francisco in 2008. That boss ended up not moving here after all, so Laine had to find work upon her arrival here. She was able to do that relatively easily. Though she'd worked at Trader Joe's in Chico doing her store's art, by the time she got to San Francisco, she took a break from art. She worked for a caterer doing special events. And it was at that job that Alfredo and Laine met. I ask them what year that connection was made, and the fact that they both struggled to remember says a lot. Deep friendships can do that. They ballpark it as 2009 or 2010, before the Giants won their first World Series in SF. A small subset of their coworkers were artists, and they all formed a tight social circle. Fredo and others urged Laine to get back to painting. And, inspired by her and others in the group, he decided to pick something up also. He channeled the graffiti he'd done when he was younger. Soon enough, that work crew had a group art show and they asked Fredo to be part of it. That show led to another with the same artists. They had their own art, of course, but the four also contributed to a single collaborate piece. Me, Laine, and Fredo struggle to remember the name of the game with plastic monkeys that Laine compared the piece to. “Barrel of Monkeys,” Fredo eventually recalls. Yep. It was 2016 and with those shows behind him, Fredo decided to run with “above-ground” art. He says that, especially in those days, Laine helped him out a lot with the technical side of creating art. Fredo also credits her with being good at the business side of being an artist—promotion and sales and such. Since she started doing art again, Laine hasn't stopped. She shares how that got going again. She was visiting her girlfriend's relatives in Tamales, where many members of that family paint. Laine was inspired. But when it came to subject matter, she felt she had two options—the surrounding natural beauty (specifically, a nearby creek), or a shiny red teapot. She settled on a mashup of sorts—the teapot pouring into the creek. She had a lot of fun with that little painting. And so, she picked that up and ran with it. Check back next week for Part 2 with Laine and Fredo. We recorded this episode at Madrone Art Bar in April 2025. Photography by Mason J.

The unbelievable true story of John Lee Bishop, a former megachurch pastor who ended up running drugs for the Sinaloa Cartel. For thirty years, John Lee Bishop was a pastor. Along the way, he learned that everyone does stupid things. We lie to our families. We lie to ourselves. We take long lunch breaks and sneak cigarettes when we said we'd quit. Sometimes, we take a sabbatical from our nice, comfortable life as a pastor and start running drugs for the Sinaloa Carte then get caught and spend five years in federal prison.Okay, that last one might just apply to John. But it does make for one hell of a story. In The Church of Living Dangerously, John tells that story in full for the first time-and you don't know the half of it. Along the way, he brings readers along for the harrowing ride from the rough small town in Washington where he was born all the way to the dirty villages in Mexico where he fell in with some of the most dangerous criminals on the planet. There are backyard fight clubs where John learned to take a punch, the abandoned K-Mart where he used to preach every Sunday (sometimes with the help of wild animals), and the drug dens where he almost lost his life ten times over. It's a story that seems too wild to be true. But it is true-and John has the scars, both literal and figurative, to prove it. Ride along with John as he gets arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border and learn the story of his life in all its rough, stupid glory of guns, drugs, tigers, bare-knuckle boxing matches, and prison riots. John has learned a lot of important lessons about hardship and redemption and family, and what it means to live dangerously-and to experience another chance at life.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
This is a three-part podcast series dedicated to understanding how serial killers form, and how we can stop them before they strike again. Hosted by award-winning crime scene investigator Sheryl McCollum, each episode features a guest expert who brings unique expertise into the psychology, behavior, and patterns of serial offenders. Guest Bio and Links: Phil Chalmers is a 40 year American Criminal Profiler, true crime writer, and host of the Dennis Quaid owned podcast “Where The Bodies Are Buried.” His live trainings are legendary in the law enforcement world, as he trains police officers, the FBI, probation officers, school administrators, and many other professionals. You may have seen Phil on A&E’s Killer Kids, or Fox’s Crime Watch Daily. He has interviewed hundreds of violent killers, including serial killers, school shooters, mass murderers, family annihilators, and spree killers. Names you might know on his interview list include Charles Manson, The Son of Sam, BTK, The Hillside Strangler, The Gainesville Ripper, The Zodiac Copycat, The Smiley Face Killer, and the Amityville Horror Killer. Listeners can learn more about at Phil Chalmers at his website, on IG @philechalmerprofiler and his podcast - Where The Bodies Are Buried Aeman Presley is a currently incarcerated serial killer who is serving life sentences for four murders committed in Georgia. Before his crimes, Presley worked as an actor and performer, appearing in commercials and on television. Now, from prison, he shares his story in an effort to help law enforcement and society understand the psychological trajectory that led to his violence. Resources: Part 1 - The Anatomy of a Serial Killer: Psychology, Profiling, Prevention In this episode of Zone 7, Crime Scene Investigator, Sheryl McCollum and Phil Chalmers talk with Aeman Presley as he recounts his descent into violence; from an aspiring actor with a troubled past to a convicted serial killer. Aeman reveals the psychological battle he’s fought since childhood, marked by fatherlessness, gang affiliation, and undiagnosed mental health issues. He talks openly about his early life in Chicago, his attempts to pursue a professional life in acting, and the psychotic break that led to a series of brutal murders in the Atlanta area. Aeman walks listeners through his inner monologue before the killings, the warped logic he believed justified his actions, and the moment of psychological rupture when the “demon” within took over. This is not a glamorization, it’s a rare firsthand look into the psyche of someone who once viewed murder as both necessity and compulsion. Show Notes: (0:00) Welcome back to Zone 7 with Crime Scene Investigator, Sheryl McCollum (0:10) Intro - On the line with Aeman Presley (2:30) Presley's early life and path to crime (3:30) Military discharge and mental health struggles (5:30) Chasing an acting career in Atlanta and LA (7:30) Financial strain and the turn to crime (10:00) Aeman’s first killing - inside the Kmart parking lot (15:00) Realizations in the aftermath - would it have continued? What's up, dudes? Attention, Kmart shoppers! Yes, we're talking all about the home of the blue light special. It's a Kmart Christmas! Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax and Nicholas Pepin of Pop Culture Roulette join me live to watch some ‘80s Kmart Christmas commercials! The store that would become Kmart was founded by SS Kresge after he met Frank Woolworth. Inspired by his stores, Kresge invested in a five-and-dime which did well enough for him to open a store in Detroit. In 1912 he incorporated in Delaware with 85 stores. In January 1962 he opened the first Kmart, and in 1981, the 2000th Kmart was open.Subsequently, 1985 saw Kmart convert one of its in-store cafeterias into a Little Caesar's. Throughout the ‘80s they were the 2nd largest retailer after Sears until 1990 when Walmart passed them. These commercials show a variety of products from the ‘80s, including phones and clothes. There's even an ad for Christmas portraits!Catchy jingles? Check. Cheesy, saccharine messages? Of course. Comic strip shenanigans? Definitely! Back in October, the last K-Mart Store in America closed its doors for good, and no one was more happy about that than our lead pastor. We explore the world of asset class conversions with special guest Clint Harris, who specializes in turning empty big-box buildings (think old Kmarts and abandoned textile mills) into profitable self-storage facilities. Clint shares why changing consumer needs (especially among younger renters) is sparking new demand for creative reuse, and how savvy operators can use “cap rate arbitrage” to transform distressed properties at half the cost (and in a fraction of the time) compared to ground-up development. If you're curious about office-to-multifamily flips, hotel conversions, or self-storage projects, this episode offers an inside look at the rewards and pitfalls of going beyond traditional real estate strategies. Today's Episode Takeaways: - Why Conversions? How shifting consumer habits and vacant properties create “cap rate arbitrage.” - Storage Boom: Millennials now make up 38% of self-storage users, transforming the classic “store your junk” model into a climate-controlled, in-and-out amenity. - Key Metrics for Conversions: What operators look for in population density, traffic counts, and market rent comps to ensure profitability. - Challenges & Pitfalls: How unanticipated change orders and extended timelines can sink a project if you lack the right experience or vertical integration. - Beyond Self-Storage: From offices to hotels, RV parks to tiny-home villages—why any distressed asset can be repurposed with the right vision, team, and risk management. IN THE EARLY 1980s, on Stark Street in Southeast Portland, there was an aging Hudson Oil Co. gas station that never seemed to get much business. It had an appearance reminiscent of a Kmart store three years ago, like a neglected outpost of a once-huge nationwide business that was slowly fading away — which was in fact the case. Hudson Oil Co., at its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, had about 300 gas stations in 36 states, plus an oil refinery. It was owned and managed by an oil tycoon named Mary Hudson, a remarkable woman who founded the business in 1933 when she was just 21 years old. She launched it by borrowing $200 from her father and using it to open a gas station in Kansas City. At her peak, Hudson was one of only three women on the Forbes 400 list of the richest people in the U.S. At her downfall in 1982, she was convicted of felony theft for tweaking her company's gas pumps to short-change customers, a desperate move made to try to stave off bankruptcy after her company got caught unprepared for a sudden glut on the crude-oil market. But probably the most interesting thing about the Stark Street Hudson station was the giant wall mural on its side. The left side of the mural showed two big Arabian camels with packsaddles on them towering over a miner-49er-type guy pitching a little pup-tent camp; the right side was taken up with a large colorful map of the U.S. with the words “36 States” printed over the top of it. “First it was camels in the west,” reads the type over the picture. “Now HUDSON serves you best!” As advertising, this mural was a bit of a mixed bag. It did attract attention, but mostly it was the wrong kind. Most people who looked at it probably wondered how a company could have gotten big enough to be in 36 states without learning what kind of animals cowboys and miner-49ers used. Mules, yes; horses, sure; but — camels? Well, as it turns out, camels did have a role to play in the American West. They started out strong, and hopes were high that they would be a great addition to the frontier transportation infrastructure; but then their number-one booster disgraced himself by doing something super illegal, and the camels kind of fell out of favor in the West and faded away. Come to think of it, maybe it's not such a bad analogy for Hudson Oil Co. after all.... An episode with all the right ingredients! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * In today's episode, Matt and Angela, joined by special guest Melanie Deziel, delve into the legendary Martha Stewart and the fascinating autistic-coded traits that set her apart.* After watching the recent Martha Stewart Netflix documentary, Melanie noticed countless traits in Martha that could suggest neurodivergence.* We explore the ethics of speculating whether public figures are autistic and how reluctance to do so can stem from internalized ableism—implying that reacting negatively to the idea suggests autism is something undesirable.* Being autistic is a source of pride—it's not just who we are, but a culture with its own ways of thinking, communicating, and experiencing the world. Embracing autism means recognizing its value, celebrating our strengths, and rejecting the idea that neurodivergence is something to be "fixed."* We discuss the genetics of autism, how it is inherited, and why this gives us reason to speculate that Martha Stewart may be neurodivergent. Her father's strong need for routine and order—an autistic trait—deeply shaped the way she navigates the world.* The discussion shifts to the misogynistic media coverage of Martha Stewart and the criticism she faced for selling her cookware line at Kmart, which was dismissed as “low culture” in America. This connects to justice sensitivity, as she openly stated her belief that lower-income people still deserved access to quality cookware.* From her show to her media empire and the many now-commonplace innovations she pioneered, we discuss how Martha Stewart is a media genius—and how that level of brilliance can be deeply threatening to many people.* Other autistic hallmarks of Martha Stewart include her direct, straightforward communication style and the way she speaks with precision and a matter-of-fact tone.* What's fascinating about Martha Stewart is how she's often perceived as icy or cold by outsiders, yet those who truly know her—friends and longtime employees—describe her as warm, caring, and kind. This aligns with the autistic experience, where direct communication and a focused demeanor can be misinterpreted as aloofness, while deep loyalty and genuine care shine through in trusted relationships.* Her crafting reveals specific methods and attention to detail—like always using double-sided tape to wrap presents for that perfect, crisp finish—showcasing the kind of structured, methodical approach often associated with autism.* People often saw her as a tyrant, but there was intention behind her methods—she was using her encyclopedic knowledge to help others refine their craft and achieve excellence. Her high standards and structured approach reflect a deep passion for mastery, a trait often linked to autism.* She was constantly seeking ways to improve things and generously sharing her knowledge—much like penguin pebbling, where autistic people share information as a form of care and connection.* We discuss Martha's uncanny ability to recognize potential, which likely stems from strong pattern recognition—an ability often associated with autism that allows her to see possibilities others might overlook.* We also dive into her insider trading case, how she was used as a scapegoat, and how the media skewed the narrative against her—further cementing her reputation as a "horrible rich lady," despite the nuanced reality of the situation.* Her five-month stint in prison was an eye-opening experience, leading her to actively support the prison community by teaching skills, helping fellow inmates access resources, and advocating for their rights—showcasing her deep sense of justice and desire to uplift others.* After leaving prison, Martha Stewart seemed to fully embrace her true self—allowing herself to make mistakes, show more of her personality, and lean into the authenticity that had always been there beneath her polished image.* At this point, she formed an unexpected but beloved friendship with Snoop Dogg, marking a renaissance in her public image as people got to see the true, unmasked Martha Stewart—authentic, witty, and unapologetically herself.* Another autistic trait of Martha Stewart is her deep appreciation for sensory experiences—she has a keen interest in different fabrics, textures, and foods, often focusing on the details that make something feel just right.* Martha Stewart's entire brand and media empire are built on info-dumping—sharing her vast knowledge and passion for her special interests, from cooking to crafting to home design, in a way that's both meticulous and immersive.* She also had a passion for building communities of unlikely yet talented individuals, bringing together experts in their craft—a form of hyper-connectivity often seen in autistic people who naturally create networks based on shared interests and skills.* We discuss how autistic or presumed autistic people—like Taylor Swift—are often unfairly perceived and frequently targeted with hate in the media, largely due to misinterpretations of their behaviors and a deep-seated discomfort with neurodiversity.* We explore how the media's portrayal of neurodivergent public figures often distorts their true nature, focusing on how traits like directness and emotional expression are unfairly criticized, leading to negative perceptions and widespread bias.About Today's Guest:Melanie Deziel is a keynote speaker and award-winning branded content creator who is passionate about helping individuals, teams, and organizations unlock their creative potential and organize their creative efforts. She is the Co-Founder of The Creator Kitchen mastermind for creatives, and the author of both “The Content Fuel Framework: How to Generate Unlimited Story Ideas” and “Prove It: Exactly How Modern Marketers Earn Trust.”“You're autistic way before you get a medical diagnosis. Your parents were autistic, your grandparents were autistic, your great-grandparents were autistic. You don't need some neurotypical with a degree to come along and pronounce you autistic. “ - Matt“That's always my favorite - the diagnostic domino effect. After my diagnosis, my mom is going through the paper and she's like, ‘that's not weird, I did that. That's not weird, I did that.' And I was like, have I got news for you, mama? Welcome.” - Angela“Her whole thing, which was setting off my justice sensitivity alarms, was that people who don't have a lot of money also deserve to live well. They also have taste. They also want their homes to be beautiful. She got a lot of flack for that decision, but she saw the gap in the marketplace. She's like, ‘just because someone doesn't have a lot of money, doesn't mean they don't like nice pots and pans or want beautiful curtains or whatever else.” - Melanie“It's only the people who have sort of passing interactions with her and take one offhanded comment and they're like, ‘she's horrible, she's a b***h, she's icy, she's cold', whatever. But the people who are around her say like, no, she's deeply caring. She loves the people around her. She just has high expectations and is very straightforward in the way she speaks. She will say to you, ‘I appreciate this thing you've given me. It's poorly constructed. Let's fix it.' She's just very straightforward, and you're like, ‘I didn't mean to offend you. I thought we were all aware of this reality right in front of us.” - Melanie In this episode, we take a deep dive into the world of Martha Stewart, exploring how her traits align with autistic characteristics and the media's often skewed perception of her. From her intense need for control to the challenges she faced in a world that misunderstood her, we break down the real Martha Stewart—and the misconceptions surrounding her. Join Matt, Angela, and special guest Melanie Deziel as they discuss how her unique personality and approach to life shaped her empire, and how she became a target of unfair media scrutiny.
