Lock up your stottie cakes, 'cause this week we're joined by Newcastle's very own Fast Blood. Well, we're joined by 50% of the band (and 50% of its Daves): Davey the drummer and Abi the vocalist. We discuss retro computer games (bonus points if you spot the hidden game theme music), when things started going down hill in the world, irritating pets, riots, our home towns and of course we squeeze in a bit of chat about their band.Niallism's off at a pop concert this week so Tom has soldiered on ably assisted by Danny Barrett off The Crash Mats. We talk bad santas, unserious music journalists, offer advice to some social anxiety sufferers and get a gig report from Robin Hood's Bay.Tuneful offerings this week come courtesy of: Reason To Leave, Popclaw, Panda Lasagne, Mean Jeans and Fucked Up
Podcast #685 changes faster than the weather w/ tunes from Maddie Moon, Matthew Sweet, Dwight Twilley Band, Mean Jeans, Sheer Mag, Nouvelle Vague, & Dwarrowdelf.
Interview by Kris PetersOne of the most enduring qualities of music - or punk music more specifically - is that as a listener or musician you don't feel the obligation to grow up.Ever.It's actually expected of you that your morals and beliefs will differ from the rest of society, and your outlook on life and sense of humour practically remain the same thing. So why fight it? That would be more difficult than conforming, and we all know that's not going to happen.Just ask the three Jeans that make up Mean Jeans - Billy, Houndy and Junior - a trio of friends/band mates who have stumbled through life since even before starting the band 15 years ago, and they couldn't be happier. With a new album, Blasted, having recently hit the shelves and an almost completed Australian tour with good mates The Chats life couldn't be much better for Mean Jeans.Just don't ask them if they are ever going to grow up.Making a mental note to avoid that question, HEAVY sat down earlier today with Billy Jeans to catch up on things, starting with the reception for Blasted, which came out on February 9."Awesome," he smiled. "I feel good about it. I'm judging primarily from social media and whatnot, but everybody's sending text messages… I saw a bunch of reviews that the label sent that were all in German, so I don't even know what they said (laughs). It's been a good reception and I think while we were making this record I could tell that it had a little more cohesion and was more true to what Mean Jeans is supposed to be about at the core."We ask Billy to go deeper into the album musically."We never have and never will stray from about a four-power chord progression structure," he offered. "We pretty much keep it Ramones simple and then see what we can sprinkle on top of there, but with this one we had… the band wasn't on hiatus per se, but we actually were living in three different cities when COVID struck. We had been touring in the US up until the end of 2020, so it was a week before the pandemic occured, and we had a support tour with The Chats on the books, and we had never met these guys. That got postponed and postponed and postponed and rescheduled, so we spent most of the pandemic anticipating the tour. We kept booking stuff, even though no one knew when it would make sense to be doing so. Ultimately, it took over two years for the tour to happen, during which time Mean Jeans were not really functional. So the stuff I was writing, I had to put out a solo record called Funky Punks In Space, but mostly because I knew there was no chance of the songs seeing the light of day with Mean Jeans. Then we hadn't played a gig in two years, and we did a six-week US tour with The Chats, and they took us to Australia a couple of months later and after that, after about 10 weeks of touring, we hopped off the stage, and we were like, okay, that was really fun. We gotta bang out another album."In the full interview, Billy talks more about the songs on the album, addresses the press releases claim that Blasted is a "weird, wonderful and wacky album", which of the tracks is his personal favourite, the current tour with The Chats and how it has been going, the benefits of having time off between shows to be able to drive to shows, maintaining a sense of humour and more.
WYRES are in MLPP Towers this week for a wide ranging discussion covering their own modern sound, sleep disorders, uplifting lyrics, MySpace and appearing on a sitcom marketed at millenials. These boys have some big things coming down the track, so keep your eyes peeled.Tom has chalked up yet another wholesome weekend, Niallism's potentially broken his vegan vows and we despair at what we get sent sometimes.Music for ya this week comes courtesy of Mean Jeans, The Usuals, Regal Cheer (whose hometown i get totally wrong, sorry), Sommerset and Consumed.

Southern California punks Total Massacre, a self-described band of "anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-capitalists," have just dropped a raging and politically charged new track titled, "Get Rich or Try Dying." Of the track, singer Cap'n No-Fun says, “Get Rich or Try Dying started like most of our songs do, with a suggestion for a funny song title (this time from our drummer Tommy) combined with the unshakeable sense that literally everything has been fundamentally stacked against us. So not exactly new territory for us as far as songwriting goes but I feel like this one does a good job honing in on one of the really important points that I think is pretty important, and all too easily overlooked: That our lives are the commodity that is being bought and sold.” For the music video, the band enlisted the creative mind of Dylan Howard, the drummer from LA punk band The Lungs, who directed the clip. “Get Rich Or Try Dying” music video: https://youtu.be/LhWcVFjnIvcStream the track on digital platforms here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/totalmassacre/get-rich-or-try-dying The punk ethos is present in everything Total Massacre does, and has earned them an international following in an extremely short amount of time. Committed to bashing authority and calling out the dog whistle of fascism whatever the source, Total Massacre plays every song with a sense of urgency and dread as if at any second some lunatic in the White House might unleash nuclear annihilation upon us all. The LA-based 4-piece channels the breakneck pace and buzzsaw guitars of 80's hardcore with lyrics drenched in the sweat, tears, and disaffected rage of life today. Explicitly political and anti-fascist vocals bark an outraged retort to both the ineffectual, self-defeating cynicism of neoliberal centrists and the greedy, craven nihilism of modern-day conservatives. The self-titled Total Massacre (2018) and the blistering follow-up The System Works... (2019) laid the foundation for what this band stands for. Their live show came a long way, garnering a performance at 2019's Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival, and gigs opening for acts like Pennywise, The Bronx, MDC, Total Chaos, Naked Aggression, CJ Ramone, Flipper, Mondo Generator, Verbal Abuse, Angry Samoans, Mean Jeans, Pulley, DFL and more. The band was primed and ready to share the stage with Pears when Covid 19 shut everything down. Total Massacre spent the downtime writing songs remotely, rehearsing only once or twice before convening to record “the songs of 2020”, all to be released as a series of singles through the first half of 2021. The bands' home base studio Beer City nearly burned down in 2020, but should be up and running in time for the band to record another flurry of singles. As glad as they are that Trump will be out of office, they aren't holding their breath for the democratic establishment to fix our dumpster of a country, so you can count on plenty more pissed off hardcore from Total Massacre soon. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada's TOUGH AGE are gearing up to release their debut LP on Mint Records in November 2013, but first they decided to tour Ontario with local stalwarts KETAMINES. Ken Cheppaikode of DIRTNAP RECORDS joins us to talk about the label turning 14! Find out how much Ken weighed when he was 14, and how many fights he got into at Black Flag shows! We play some favourite tunes from the Dirtnap back catalogue, and new and weird tunes from ALL OVER THE PLACE! Hear songs from Marked Men, Mind Spiders, The Exploding Hearts, The Briefs, The White Wires, Steve Adamyk Band, Mean Jeans, Big Eyes, Night Birds, Ty Segall, Hsy, Mystics, Snooker Emporium, All Dogs, and Tennis!
We talk to Carlo Moss, the co-creator of viral Youtube series The Most Popular Girls in School. We debate whether it's now considered rude to leave a voicemail, and we evaluate a list of Flirty Text Message Ideas from Seventeen magazine and rule them either “acceptably flirtatious” or “scary and disturbing.” Plus music from Mean Jeans and a festive new song from Neil & John!

Oh wow, is it really May already? Well, according to the calendar it is, so here's EPISODE #31 of Random Old Records! April was an amazing month for rock n' roll, and I spent it buying a whole pile of records and getting my face melted off at live shows by the Black Lips, Vivian Girls, Ty Segall, The Fresh and Onlys, The Black Angels, Davila 666, Magic Jake and The Power Crystals, and YOWZA! Yeah, luckily a whole buncha sweet bands played around Cincinnati and got a fantastic turnout each time, so hopefully that bodes well for the summer and we'll be seeing even more coming soon!Anyway, Random Old Records #31 is loaded with an hour of new rock n' roll, including a BRAND NEW track from glam pop wizard King Tuff, fresh off a recent Scion A/V split single with the Hex Dispensers. It's called "Hands" and it sounds like a long lost Slade song. His upcoming LP is gonna be something else! The featured label this time around is Trouble In Mind, who should get some kinda award for putting out dozens of records without a single bad one in the bunch! This time around, you'll hear a track from each of their latest releases (Wrong Words, The Paperhead, Jeffrey Novak, and Alex Cuervo), plus Mean Jeans doing a TORRID Sparks cover from the TiM Record Store Day split 7"! That The Paperhead LP is freakin' amazing, by the way. It's a buncha 18 year old kids channeling vintage 60s psych pop through a 90s Elephant 6 lens and wrapping it all in a haze of youthful vigor and pie-eyed optimism. Not to be missed!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Come back next month (or so) for another episode of Random Old Records.
