This is Episode 71 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, Timothy Knotts gives a plenary talk on Responsible Rhetoric: Persuading Toward Truth. This talk was given at the 2024 Consortium conference in Maynard, MA on July 12-13, 2024. Kepler's Consortiums provide resources and regional connections for Christian families, teachers, and educational organizations to expand the reach of classical education and foster human flourishing for generations to come. The New England Consortium of Classical Educators (NECCE) exists to point New England to the unifying Truth found in Christ and His creation, the Good of fellowship with like-minded individuals, and the Beauty reflected in great works of literature, science, and art, through teaching, conversation, and conferences. Timothy Knotts is a co-founder of the Consortium, and lives in Windsor, Connecticut with his wife, Cynthia, and their four protégés. He is the author of Reasoning Together: Philosophy, a soon to be released high school introduction to philosophy, and is occasionally published on the CiRCE and Kepler blogs. Timothy is a Lead Curriculum Developer for Classical Conversations, a CiRCE Institute certified master teacher, a recovering attorney, an amateur poet, and lover of the beautiful.

In this very special episode, the boys skip the fanfare and get right to it.  They review the big win for NSC against New England on the road where Sam Surridge once again proved his dominance.  They list off his accomplishments as well as those of Hany Mukhtar, and yet, neither one has made an all-star team?  What could explain such an oversight?  Well, there's really only one explanation (or two... or three...) and it must be a conspiracy!  The boys put on their tin foil hats to get to the bottom of the Surridge all-star snub.  Then, they share some of their favorite music from the past, including possibly the greatest song ever written, the most fun music revival of the mid-90's, and perhaps the scariest concert that ever occurred at Vanderbilt Memorial Gym.  And they drink beer.

Between May 21 and June 16, 1791, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison went on a trip together through Upstate New York and parts of New England on horseback. This "northern journey" came at a moment of tension for the new nation, one in whose founding these Virginians and political allies had played key roles. The Constitution was ratified and President Washington was in his first term of office. Whether the country could overcome regional and political differences and remain unified, however, was still very much in question. Hence why some observers at the time wondered whether this excursion into Federalist New England by the two most prominent southern Democratic-Republicans, both future presidents, had an ulterior motive. Madison, maintained that the journey was for "health, recreation, and curiosity." He and Jefferson needed a break from their public responsibilities, so off they set. Along the way, they took notes on the ravages of the Hessian Fly, an insect that had been devastating wheat crops. While in Vermont, they focused on the sugar maple tree, which many hoped might offer a domestic alternative to slave-grown sugar cane imports. An encounter with a free Black farmer at Fort George resulted in a journal entry that illuminates their attitudes toward slavery and race. A meeting with members of the Unkechaug tribe on Long Island led to a vocabulary project that preoccupied Jefferson for decades, and which remains relevant today. The northern journey was also about friendship. Madison later recalled that the trip made Jefferson and him "immediate companions," solidifying a bond with almost no peer in the annals of American history, one that thrived for fifty years. Jefferson declared at the end of his life, that his friendship with Madison had been "a source of constant happiness" to him. A Journey North: Jefferson, Madison, and the Forging of a Friendship (Oxford University Press, 2025) reveals the moment when it took hold. I did it! A lot of Firsts for me earlier this month. This solo episode of "Run the Race" is the recap of me running 3 marathons (26.2 miles) in 3 days in 3 different states in New England. That's 80 miles over the span of 15.5 miles of races. God made us to do hard things! You'll hear the ins and outs of my trips to run in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine - three states I'd never been to before this either. In this shorter pod, you'll hear about inspiring new long distance runners I got to meet and run with...shirts and food with a purpose...finish times that got progressively slower...music (80s and worship) to pump me up and even sing out loud to during the marathons...scenery and obstacles on the race courses...running for others...how my body held up those 3 days...ice baths and fueling in between each marathon. I close out with my tours of these states including the longest covered bridge in the nation that takes you into NH...a farm with fresh Vermont maple syrup...a unique mill-turned in that I stayed and ate at...hitting the beach and a Presidents' home on the Maine coast...historic lighthouses...and lobster rolls! And i pray. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. Television episodes that traumatized 80s kids.Episode 201 kicks off summer with Gen-X nostalgia to keep you entertained while soaking in the sun.It begins by scaring you out of the water as we look back at the classic movie Jaws for its 50th anniversary. A killer shark stalks beachgoers and, in doing so, creates the 'summer blockbuster' movie. We do a deep dive into the origins of the film and what makes it stand the test of time so well.We go way back in the day and down a rabbit hole as we look for the origins of a lesser-known 80s urban legend. Polybius was a video game that was said to cause mental and physical issues for its players, but did it exist at all? That is the question that we try to find the answer to. Childhood trauma is on the menu in this week's Top 5. Sitcoms are supposed to make us laugh. In the 1980s and 1990s, though every now and then they terrified us. These were the 'very special' television episodes that tackled more serious issues. New Hampshire has removed the income cap for families applying to its Education Freedom Account program, making it the first state in New England to offer school choice to all K-12 children. Governor Kelly Ayotte signed the program expansion into law on June 10. Previously, first-time applicants had to have incomes below 350% of the federal poverty level to qualify.Total program enrollment will be limited to 10,000 students in the first year of the program's expansion. If more students apply than there are spaces available, the program will prioritize current participants and their siblings, students with special needs, and low-income students.New Hampshire's four-year-old EFA program is one of the most family-empowering school choice laws in the country. EFAs can be used for a wide variety of approved education expenses. Each child's EFA is funded by the state's “per-pupil adequate education grant amount,” plus any additional aid that would have been allocated in a public school (for example, if the student qualified for free- or reduced-price lunch or special-needs funding or was an English-language learner). The state contracts with the nonprofit Children's Scholarship Fund New Hampshire to administer the program.New Hampshire follows Tennessee, Idaho, Wyoming, and Texas in expanding educational opportunities available to their children this year. It's time Oregon gave the same chances to students here, too.

His memoir, A Million Little Pieces, shot to the top of bestseller lists, thanks in part to Oprah's endorsement. Then fact-checkers unmasked its fabrications, and James found himself being more of an outcast than he’d planned for. Nearly 20 years later, when the line between fact and fiction is more blurred than ever, Frey may seem like more of a pioneer than a pariah. Together, we reflect on what it was like to face and overcome this public pain, and the inspiration behind his new novel Next to Heaven, a provocative murder mystery skewering the wealthy New England town he calls home. In this episode of Gangland Wire, host Gary Jenkins sits down with author Daniel Zimmerman, whose investigative works dive deep into the dark corners of Boston's organized crime world. Zimmerman has written two gripping true crime books that reveal the raw and often tragic realities of life on the fringe of the Mafia. He recounts his research for his book, Shots in the Dark, which led him to an informal meeting with former New England boss Peter Limone. His first book, Shots in the Dark, tells the harrowing tale of Rocco Anthony Balliro, a Boston mob associate whose desperate and poorly planned rescue mission turned into a deadly shootout. Believing he was storming into danger to help a friend, Rocco unknowingly walked into an ambush set by Boston police. When the smoke cleared, the cost was unimaginable—his girlfriend and her young son lay dead. Zimmerman takes us behind the headlines, exposing the chaos, confusion, and heartbreak of that fateful night. Zimmerman's second book, Chasson's Run: The Prison Break That Captivated America and the Love Story That Fueled It, shifts focus to one of Boston's most violent and manipulative criminals. This is the story of a man so dangerous, yet so persuasive, that he convinced a woman to help him escape from the infamous Walpole State Prison. It's a tale of charm, obsession, and reckless loyalty—set against the backdrop of one of the most dramatic prison breaks in U.S. history. Join us as Daniel Zimmerman unpacks these explosive stories and reflects on the twisted loyalties, romantic delusions, and violent consequences that define Boston's mob lore. Good to be back here in the studio of Gangland Wire. I have today Daniel Zimmerman, a little bit different sort of a story. Now, he has another book a lot of you guys might be a little more interested in. We're going to talk about that just a little bit. But the main book we're going to look at is Chasson's Run. I think I pronounced that right, Daniel. It's actually Chasson. Chasson's Run. Chasing somebody, which kind of fits the picture here. I think it's a story that, well, Daniel Zimmerman, welcome. I really appreciate you coming on. Well, thank you. I appreciate you having me for this talk. Yeah. Now, Daniel, tell the guys a little bit about yourself. So tell the guys a little bit about your story. Well, oddly enough, I am a newspaper writer, but not the type you would think. I've been writing for over 25 years now, actually, a column or columns for local newspapers. And I cover, of all things, high school sports. I go out to area high schools. I watch the games. I take notes, take interviews, grab comments from players [1:00] and coaches, go home and write it. And a couple of days later, it's in the newspaper. Is that in the Boston area? Yes. Great Boston area. 25 years I've been doing it. You know, it's funny you say that because I did a library presentation for my first book. And one of the questions in the audience from a woman was, how do I translate writing high school sports into writing mob books? Yeah. And I told her, you know, there's two aspects of both. You have to, number one, be able to research, find out information. [1:29] Keep track of information, and be able to do an interview with your subjects. And in this case, it would be athletes and coaches. On the book writing side,

How do you keep your heart open to love after it's been broken apart by grief? Danielle LaRock was just 19 when her father died of a heart attack. In 2022, her partner Ian died suddenly. Then, in 2024, her beloved dog Blue died, and with Blue went many shared memories of time spent with Ian. The experience of loving and being loved by Ian opened up places in Danielle's heart that had closed down after her father's death. That openness has stayed with her, even as she grieves for both Ian and Blue. That ongoing love and connection have shaped Danielle's grief and the ways she tries to support others who are also grieving.  We discuss: How Danielle coped - and didn't - as a college student after her dad's death The isolation of being surrounded by peers who hadn't experienced the death of a parent Meeting Ian as children and reconnecting as adults How Ian's own experience with the death of his dad helped him understand and support her grief Being present for Ian's medical crisis and emergency brain surgery  The trauma of witnessing his death and being the person who had to tell his friends and family How experiencing deep love with Ian changed her approach to all relationships  Learning to celebrate the milestones of others while grieving the loss of the ones she would have shared with Ian The spiritual awakening Danielle experienced after Ian's death Discovering traditional therapy didn't work for her The value of online support groups, specifically for young widows & widowers Exploring ways to support others in their grief Guest Bio  Danielle LaRock is the co-host of the popular podcast National Park After Dark, which explores dark history and tragedy in outdoor spaces. A former veterinary technician from New England, Danielle has become a compassionate voice in the grief community, using her own experiences with loss to help others navigate their journeys.  Connect with Danielle on IG.

A woman is seven months pregnant on a transatlantic voyage in 1720, giving birth in the belly of a rat-infested ship — when suddenly, pirates attack. But instead of plundering, one pirate hears the newborn's cry and makes a deal: name the baby Mary, after his mother, and he'll spare the ship. That child would grow up to be Ocean Born Mary — a woman whose legend sparked centuries of ghost stories, folklore, and New England intrigue. Two hundred years later, colonial enthusiasts purchased a haunted home allegedly linked to Ocean Born Mary and created a paranormal tourist destination. We trace the line between fact and folklore: from Mary's miraculous birth to tales of haunted hallways, sword-wielding spirits, and a mysterious green silk dress. Possible treasure, paranormal hoaxes, a 1930s ghost tour hustle, and a visit from Ed and Lorraine Warren. Whether you're here for pirate drama, haunted house vibes, or historical folklore, this episode delivers a story that's as entertaining as it is creepy.
