The Big Bang Never Happened? Eric Lerner, DemystifySci #337

Eric Lerner is a popular science writer, plasma physicist, and long-time collaborator of the late Nobel laureate Hannes Alfvén. He's also one of the featured speakers at our Beyond the Big Bang event this summer in Sesimbra, Portugal. For over thirty years, Lerner has been a leading voice in plasma cosmology and a critic of Big Bang cosmology, who argued for a non-expanding, steady state universe as the central claim of his landmark book The Big Bang Never Happened (affiliate link to puchase: https://amzn.to/4jEez8H). Our conversation dives into the history and foundations of plasma cosmology, from early Birkeland current experiments in the Arctic that revealed the electrical nature of the aurora, to the role of plasma dynamics in the shape and behavior of galaxies. All the hits are in here - from Halton Arp, whose Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies seriously challenged the way that mainstream cosmologists interpret redshift, to the electromagnetic forces often overlooked in mainstream cosmology, to the filamentary plasma structures and cosmic-scale currents that strain the limits of the standard model. This is a deep exploration of alternative cosmology, electric universe theories, and the scientists behind them — from Fred Hoyle to Anthony Peratt — who refused to patch a dying theory and instead asked instead if the universe might be eternal.MAKE HISTORY WITH US THIS SUMMER:https://demystifysci.com/demysticon-2025PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go!00:05:59 – The Cosmological Pendulum 00:14:09 – Knowledge and Societal Progress 00:22:18 – Big Bang Origins & Ideological Influence 00:29:04 – Technological Stagnation Since the 1970s 00:32:02 – Ideology Replacing Empiricism in Science 00:36:14 – Gravity vs. Electromagnetism in Cosmology 00:41:02 – Evolution of Scientific Funding Models 00:51:11 – Birkeland Currents & Plasma Discoveries 00:56:25 – Centralization of Postwar Science 01:00:18 – Orthodoxy in Medicine 01:00:59 – Decline of Fundamental Research 01:04:39 – Plasma Cosmology vs. Dark Matter 01:08:52 – Capitalism and Research Priorities 01:14:22 – Sustaining Independent Science 01:15:16 – Birkeland, Alfvén & Plasma History 01:22:24 – Einstein's Rise & Cultural Legacy 01:31:05 – General Relativity and Elitism 01:34:44 – Chapman's Math vs. Empirics 01:37:12 – Alfvén's Plasma Breakthroughs 01:43:39 – Plasma Physics vs. Big Bang Theories 01:47:39 – Nobel Prize & MHD's Hidden Flaws 01:58:00 – Filamentary Plasmas vs. MHD 02:00:47 – Pseudoplasmas and MHD Limits 02:02:58 – Defining Plasma as a State of Matter 02:06:00 – Where Plasma Exists in Nature 02:11:17 – The Myth of Mathematical Models 02:21:10 – Scientific vs. Aesthetic Cosmology 02:29:55 – Failed Big Bang Predictions 02:36:01 – Alternatives to the Expanding Universe 02:43:09 – Large-Scale Structures and Cosmic Age 02:50:10 – Public Science and Open Debate 02:55:16 – Toward a New Cosmological Paradigm#plasma #bigbang #darkmatter #electricuniverse, #cosmology, #astrophysics, #scientificrevolution, #fusionenergy, #philosophypodcast, #sciencepodcast, #longformpodcast ABOUS US: Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. Current Advances in Behavioral Addictions: From Fundamental Research to Clinical Practice American Journal of Psychiatry This narrative review discusses five clinically relevant and prevalent behavioral addictions that are common and often co-occur with psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. Gambling disorder is the only behavioral addiction recognized as a clinical disorder in DSM-5, and Internet gaming disorder is included as a condition requiring further research. ICD-11 categorizes gambling and gaming disorders as disorders due to addictive behaviors. Additional behavioral addictions may include compulsive sexual behavior disorder, compulsive buying-shopping disorder, and problematic use of social media. Validated diagnostic instruments exist, with empirical support varying across conditions. No medications have approved indications from regulatory bodies for behavioral addictions, and cognitive-behavioral therapy has the most empirical support for efficacious treatment. Treatment optimization involving pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, neuromodulation, and their combination warrants additional investigation.   Read this issue of the ASAM Weekly Subscribe to the ASAM Weekly Visit ASAM

Apple may not be releasing a new iPhone SE in 2024, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who bases his predictions on sources in the supply chain, The Verge reported on Jan. 7. The Infosys Prize for 2022 was announced on Jan. 7, by Infosys Science Foundation. The Prize carries a pure gold medal, a citation, and a cash purse of $100,000 each in categories including science, engineering and humanities. Also in this brief, the US Federal Trade Commission is seeking to eliminate non-compete clauses, which it termed as exploitative. Notes: Google has gone to the Supreme Court after its appeal at the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal was rejected over an order from the Competition Commission of India that fined the internet search giant for its market practices in the android ecosystem. The Competition Commission, in October, fined Google $161 million for exploiting its dominant position in the market for Android, which runs 97 percent of smartphones in India, Economic Times reported on Jan. 7. Apple may not be releasing a new iPhone SE in 2024, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who bases his predictions on sources in the supply chain, The Verge reported on Jan. 7. On Friday, last week, Kuo wrote in a blog post that Apple had cancelled production and shipment plans for the phone. The US Federal Trade Commission on Thursday, last week, moved to kill the practice of imposing non-compete agreements by businesses in the country. If the proposal becomes law, it could shift the balance of power from companies to workers, NPR notes in a report on Jan. 5. It could also set a powerful example for countries around the world. The FTC has proposed a new rule that would prohibit employers from imposing noncompete agreements on their workers, a practice it called exploitative and widespread, affecting some 30 million American workers. Today's conversation was really fun. I talked with founder of New Constructs Research, David Trainer. David has a long career in fundamental analysis and founded New Constructs to enhance the research and data gathering process by harnessing technology. There's enormously important data hidden in company 10Q and 10K's but 99% of analysts do not read these important reports. I am guilty of that myself. These documents are a painful read and David's robust research extracts the important data from these reports and creates much better snapshots of the current business and places a rating on the business, the quality of earnings (economic versus reported EPS) using important and predictive metrics like ROIC, FCF Yield, etc. From there the team compares that to the current stock price to identify if theres an opportunity for investors. Sell side research is hard to trust, there are too many hidden agenda's inside ratings and recommendations IMO. We talk about their Zombie stock report, aka alot of the meme stocks and likely many that ARK owns today. ZIRP allowed profitless businesses to thrive for much longer than they should have and now we are getting back to what's important: profitability, ROIC, compounding EPS through strong capital allocation decisions, etc. The fundamentals matter most, even if the market is supremely focused on macro>micro today. In the end, the company and its ability to grow, generate cash, compound earnings and cash flows above its cost of capital. Finally we seem to be getting back to the reality of markets, the business and its profitability matter. https://www.newconstructs.com is a wonderful site to check out to see if they can help you or your RIA practice build better stock, mutual fund, or ETF portfolios. A 35% increase in the on-going fiscal year's capital budget outlay has been a catalyst for the capital goods companies this year.   On the bourses, Siemens, Thermax, Cummins India, BEL, and HAL have risen 25-100% so far in 2022 as compared to a 14% and 2.5% gain in the BSE Capital Goods and Sensex indices.  The government's capital expenditure push and the sustained demand momentum across industries continue to keep analysts upbeat on this space.  Rohit Khatri, Assistant Vice-President, Fundamental Research, Religare Broking says he's positive on capital goods over medium-to-long term. Increased govt spending key growth driver. Consumption picking up pace is another positive. All high-frequency indicators hint at robust economic growth A healthy revival in private sector spending is also taking place, which is leading to a higher intake in order inflows, analysts say.   According to HDFC Securities, private sector capex has lagged that of government's expenditure during FY20-22 but it will now outpace public capex due to increasing spending across sectors such as cement, metals, power, auto and others. Experts add that declining input costs are also lifting the prospects of companies, as margin pressures are likely to improve from the second half of FY23. Khadija Mantri, Assistant Vice-President, Research, Sharekhan by BPN Paribas say supply chain issues like chip shortage easing out. See FY23 sector earnings growth at 25-30% YoY. Multiple re-rating possible in L&T, KEC International, Va Tech Wabag and others. Sector to command higher valuation on multiple growth triggers That said, markets will react to the US Fed's rate hike decision and its commentary on the inflation trajectory today.  Monetary policy outcomes by England and Japan's central banks will also be tracked later today.

This week on Comes A Time, Mike and Oteil welcome Stephan Schwartz, writer, faculty member, and researcher focused on consciousness and extraordinary human functioning. Stephan shares his theories on non-local consciousness and discusses the idea that space-time arises from consciousness, not vice versa. He also goes in-depth on his firsthand experience working with remote viewing as a researcher and practitioner himself. The three also discuss the many parallels between different religions and their access points to the “soul” or continuity of consciousness through gathering, intention, ritual, and meditation. Stephan Schwartz is a Distinguished Consulting Faculty of Saybrook University, a Fellow of the William James Center for Consciousness Studies, Sofia University, and a Research Associate of the Cognitive Sciences Laboratory of the Laboratories for Fundamental Research.  For 40 years he has been studying the nature of consciousness, particularly that aspect independent of space and time. Schwartz is part of the small group that founded modern Remote Viewing research, and is the principal researcher studying the use of Remote Viewing in archaeology. Using Remote Viewing he discovered Cleopatra's Palace, Marc Antony's Timonium, ruins of the Lighthouse of Pharos, and sunken ships along the California coast, and in the Bahamas.  Learn more about Stephan here. ----------- *DISCLAIMER: This podcast does NOT provide medical advice. A candid conversation with one of the brilliant physicists who returned to India after higher studies with the world's top scientists. Now working at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in quantum computing. Sadly, India is not in the top 10 countries in this technology that is set to defeat all conventional systems. A national security game-changer. Unlike India, other countries have a defence-industry-academic complex leading such work. QC will create breakthroughs in fields like satellites, medicine, energy, materials science, finance, telecommunications. The Indian budget for QC has recently increased but still small compared to USA and China. Furthermore, Indians' work in this is scattered and casually coordinated without a large-scale central body. The most tragic flaw is in the Indian patent laws that do not protect innovation. Jack Ma said last month that China needs to focus on "new manufacturing", while the U.S. launched a trade war in order to bring "old manufacturing" back to the world's largest economy. Putting the contrast aside, the focus on new manufacturing has never been stronger in China. Efforts to build smart factories and government subsidies toward the initiative are growing across the country. A recent report published by the China Development Research Foundation, a think tank initiated by the Development Research Center of the State Council, documented some of such campaigns. In one example, Dongguan, a small city in coastal Guangdong province, has cut 250,000 jobs, or around 5% of the city's registered labor force, during a three-year "robot-for-humans" campaign. The city government spent RMB200 million (US$29 million) each year to finance companies to upgrade automation equipment. A company in Hangzhou has cut the number of workers to 11 to 13 per production line from 200 to 300 per production line ten years ago. Another kitchen appliances maker in Hangzhou received government subsidies equaling 5% of the costs to upgrade its production lines. Now it is able to cut labor force by over one third from three years ago and is aiming to achieve fully automated productions in ten years. Shenzhen government is spending RMB500 million (US$72 million) to support robotics, wearable and smart equipment sectors locally each year. Our guest of this episode of China Money Podcast, Hao Jingfang, is one of the authors of the report. Hao is also a science fiction writer and won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette for "Folding Beijing" in 2016, becoming the first female writer in Asia to receive the award. China's new manufacturing efforts echo Hao's observation that, "Whenever there’s a technological breakthrough, it is an advantage for Chinese tech companies to test the idea in a massive market." As companies, governments and investors push to "upgrade" Chinese manufacturing to full automation and "intelligent factories", a large number of jobs will disappear. But the report concludes that with careful management and retraining of the labor force, China will be able to overcome the coming labor disruptions from mass adoptions of robots and AI. However, Hao, a PhD graduate from Tsinghua University with degrees in both physics and economics, is concerned over the difficulties China will face transitioning from "technology adopters" to "technology originators." "A lot of companies are just too short-sighted. Because in the past, there were many opportunities for those companies to make quick money...Perhaps there’s no patience in these companies to aspire for bigger things. And also the investors, they want to just copy the fastest successful business model. So they are not patient enough to make long term investment," Hao told China Money Network during during an interview on the sidelines of the Annual Meeting of the New Champions held by the World Economic Forum in Tianjin last month. Q: You have written science fictions about China at a distant future. And as a director working at China Development Research Foundation, you have a unique vintage point observing China's technology space. What's your overall view of how the Chinese technology sector has grown and developed? A: The Chinese technology sector has grown quite rapidly. It has advantages of a large (domestic) market and close relationships to its customers. Whenever there's a technological breakthrough, it is an advantage for Chinese tech companies to test the idea in a massive market. However, there are some fallback too. The one main problem is the lack of basic research. Investments in basic research in China is comparatively lower comparing to developed countries.
