Heart Rate Variability (HRV) for Triathletes: What It Is, Why It Matters & How to Track It

Triathlon Nutrition Academy

Do you ever wake up feeling shattered but you just make yourself train hard anyway? I know it sounds like the thing you should do, but is that actually the best thing for your recovery, your performance and ultimately, your body? As triathletes, we’re masters at tracking watts, pace, and heart rate but there's another metric that could revolutionise your training decisions. Enter Heart Rate Variability (HRV) – your body's daily report card on recovery and readiness. Today I'm getting nerdy with Daniel Roland from HRV4Training to learn how tracking your HRV can help you get the most out of your training sessions, understand your recovery and avoid burnout. And all it takes is one minute every morning. What's HRV and Why Should You Care? Think of HRV as your body's daily stress barometer. It measures the variation between your heartbeats, giving you a window into your nervous system's state. Low HRV? Your body's in fight-or-flight mode. High HRV? You're recovering well and ready to tackle those key sessions. For triathletes juggling three sports and the demands of life, this is the kind of data you want to know. The HRV4Training App The HRV4Training app turns your smartphone into a sophisticated recovery monitoring device. Created by computer scientist Marco Altini, you don’t need any expensive or annoying gadgets – just your phone's camera and your finger for a 60-second morning check. The Science Behind Smarter Training Research shows athletes who adjust their training based on HRV perform better, even when doing fewer intense sessions. Think about that – better results with more strategic, not necessarily more, training. It's about training smarter, not harder. How to measure your HRV Consistency is key here and by measuring at the same time each morning, you’ll get a baseline of your individual scores so you can understand when your body is in a state of stress. Unlike other apps that present HRV data with an unknown algorithmic value, HRV4Training gives you raw data so you can understand how variabilities such as training sessions, sleep, nutrition, alcohol, menstrual cycles and life stressors impact your body. Daniel explains how the app's tracking features help you connect the dots between your lifestyle choices and recovery capacity. It's like having a personal performance detective. While HRV isn't a strict training dictator, it's an objective adviser when you're unsure about whether you should push through or perhaps back off a little. Think of it as your body's early warning system. Your Investment in Smarter Training For less than the cost of a new race belt, HRV4Training gives you ongoing insights into your recovery status. Available on iOS and Android, it's a one-time purchase that could save you a lot of guesswork and help you train smarter and recover faster. I've personally been experimenting with HRV for training myself lately and I love it how it provides that real time insight into my recovery, my training readiness, and the quality of my sleep the night before. And no, this isn’t a paid partnership. I bought the app out of my own pocket and I’m not getting any kickbacks! But I sure am excited to bring this conversation to you to help you unlock another level of performance. Let’s go! Are EMFs Secretly Affecting Your Health? Here's What You Need to Know Have you ever wondered why you're feeling more fatigued, experiencing brain fog, or struggling with disrupted sleep despite doing “all the right things” for your health? The answer might lie in a source you can't see: electromagnetic fields (EMFs). In today's episode, I'm joined by Nick “The EMF Guy” Pineault, a leading advocate for safe technology and author of The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs. Together, we're unpacking the hidden impacts of EMF exposure on your body, how they tie into issues like mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), and practical strategies to protect yourself. If you've ever felt powerless against the invisible wave of modern technology, this conversation will empower you with knowledge and actionable steps to reduce EMF exposure without sacrificing the convenience of your devices. What You'll Learn in This Episode: What Are EMFs and Why Should You Care? Nick explains the basics of EMFs, or what he calls "electro-pollution," and how these invisible frequencies impact your health at the cellular level, causing oxidative stress and potentially triggering conditions like MCAS.  The Science Behind EMF Sensitivity Discover how EMFs disrupt voltage-gated calcium channels in your cells, leading to oxidative stress, and why this matters for those already managing chronic health issues.  Are EMFs the New Smoking? Learn why some experts compare EMF exposure to the early days of smoking and the importance of rethinking our relationship with modern technology.  How EMFs Trigger Histamine Release Nick shares surprising research linking EMF exposure to mast cell activation and histamine release, even in individuals without MCAS.  Simple Steps to Reduce EMF Exposure at Home Turn off Wi-Fi and put devices on airplane mode overnight. Use wired connections for laptops and tablets instead of Wi-Fi. Avoid keeping devices like phones or smartwatches close to your body. Why an EMF Vacation Could Be a Game-Changer Find out how spending time away from high-EMF environments can help you identify symptoms and regain a sense of wellness.  Practical Tips for Families and Kids Nick emphasizes the importance of reducing EMF exposure for children, whose developing bodies are more sensitive, and offers tools like pre-downloading content and hardwiring tablets.  Key Takeaways for Your Wellness Journey Electro-pollution is a modern-day health challenge, but the good news is that small, intentional changes can significantly reduce your exposure. Whether you're addressing sleep issues, fatigue, or MCAS, minimizing EMFs could unlock another layer of healing for your body. By understanding the science behind EMF impacts and taking actionable steps, you can safeguard your health without giving up the conveniences of technology. The starting point of any conversation about immigration should be the numbers. This week's episode of the Center for Immigration Studies podcast highlights a recent report co-authored by Steven Camarota, the Center's director of research, which examines the number and share of the foreign-born in the United States. The total foreign-born population, encompassing both legal and illegal immigrants, has soared to a record high of 51.4 million as of February 2024, marking a monumental increase of 6.4 million since President Biden assumed office. This increase has driven the foreign-born share to an unprecedented 15.5% of the population, eclipsing historical benchmarks like that seen in 1910 and reaching a level that the Census Bureau had estimated the country would not reach until 2039.Camarota discusses the impact of policy decisions on immigration trends, noting, “This level of growth over such a short period of time was clearly caused by policy changes.” He emphasizes that “without new policies, there is no reason to believe there will be a slowdown in population growth in the future.”The implication of these historically high numbers, coupled with the growing share of the immigration population, impacts crucial aspects of American society, including assimilation, linguistic integration, and the economy. Camarota highlights the changing demographics – greater proportion of Latin American immigrants, more illegal immigrants, and a trend towards lower educational attainment.Camarota is especially concerned about education levels, as education is a key indicator of how people will fare in the modern economy – including factors such as employment potential, salary level, taxes paid, public benefits used, etc.He also underscores the distinction between the size of the economy (GDP) and its per capita performance, discussing how per capita GDP can be adversely affected despite overall economic expansion from an increase in population. In his closing commentary, Mark Krikorian, the Center's executive director and podcast host, draws attention to Biden's CHNV parole program. In just 14 months, this program has permitted an estimated 386,000 foreign nationals to enter the country who have no legal right to be here and who present special security challenges.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestSteven Camarota is the Director of Research at the Center for Immigration Studies.RelatedThe Foreign-Born Share and Number at Record HighsWhat is CHNV Parole - and Why Should You Care?FollowFollow Parsing Immigration Policy on Ricochet, Apple Podcasts, Youtube, Amazon Music, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts.Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. Episode 183 contains the important Digital Marketing News and Updates from the week of Oct 16-20, 2023.1. Microsoft's New Automated Bidding Features for Your Business! - Microsoft Advertising has rolled out two automated bidding strategies, Target CPA and Maximize Conversions, to all advertisers. These features aim to simplify the advertising process and are now available in all regions where Microsoft's Audience Ads are served. Automated bidding strategies help you optimize your ad campaigns without constant monitoring, freeing up your time for other business tasks.Target CPA allows you to set a cost-per-acquisition goal, and the system will automatically adjust your bids to meet that target. Maximize Conversions, on the other hand, aims to get you as many conversions as possible within your set budget. Both strategies offer flexibility in budgeting and performance measurement, putting you in control while also reducing manual effort.Microsoft's Audience Ads are native display ads that leverage Microsoft's data insights to target your desired audience effectively. These ads appear on various platforms like MSN, Outlook, and more. 2. Google's October 2023 Core and Spam Updates Completed! - Google has finished rolling out two significant updates that you should be aware of: the October 2023 Core Update and the October 2023 Spam Update. These updates can affect your website's visibility on Google, so let's break it down.October 2023 Core Update: This update took almost 14 days to roll out completely, starting on October 5th and ending on October 19th. It had a significant impact on SEOs and websites, causing a lot of volatility in search rankings. The update is global and affects all types of content. If you've noticed changes in your website's performance, this could be why. Google hasn't specified what percentage of queries were impacted, but it's safe to say that the reach is wide.October 2023 Spam Update: This update started on October 4th and ended on October 20th. It targets spam techniques that violate Google's policies, particularly in languages like Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hindi, and Chinese. If your website was affected, Google suggests reviewing its spam policies.Interestingly, these two updates overlapped, making it challenging to pinpoint which update caused changes to your website's rankings. If you're not involved in spammy practices and see changes, it's likely due to the Core Update. If you do engage in spam and notice alterations, it's probably the Spam Update. Why Should You Care? These updates can either elevate your website's visibility or push it down the search rankings. If you've been hit, it's crucial to adapt your strategies accordingly.Need Expert Guidance? If all this sounds overwhelming, we're here to help. Contact us for expert advice on navigating these Google updates seamlessly.3. YouTube's New AI-Powered "Spotlight Moments" - YouTube has launched an advertising feature called "Spotlight Moments," designed to boost your brand's visibility during key cultural events. This new feature uses artificial intelligence to place your brand's videos next to the most relevant and engaging content related to specific cultural moments, like Halloween or Christmas. Here's how it works: YouTube uses AI to identify popular videos related to these cultural moments. Your ads will then be served alongside this content, giving your brand a chance to shine during these high-traffic periods. All these videos will be curated into dynamically updated playlists on a sponsored hub called the "YouTube Culture Hub," which will also feature your brand's logo."Spotlight Moments" offers a unique opportunity to increase your brand's visibility and reach your target audience during times when they are most engaged. The big question, of course, is what kind of return on investment (ROI) you can expect from this new ad package.4. YouTube with New Product Targeting Features! - YouTube is introducing a new feature that allows creators to add timestamps to tagged products in their videos. This new feature aims to enhance your advertising strategy by targeting potential customers at the most opportune moments. When a timestamp is added to a tagged product, a shopping cart button appears at a time when viewer engagement is expected to be high. This precision in targeting can result in increased engagement and conversions. The feature is especially timely as YouTube plans to remove some ad controls for newly uploaded videos next month (removing individual ad controls for newly uploaded videos in November for the following ad types: Pre-roll, Post-roll, Skippable, and Non-skippable. Moving forward, creators will only be able to decide between displaying ads before or after a video, and whether to have this option on or off. If they turn this option on, YouTube will automatically decide which ad type to display as appropriate), giving creators and sponsors more control in the meantime. But that's not all. YouTube is also rolling out additional features to improve the shopping experience. One such feature allows creators to bulk tag affiliate products in video libraries, potentially earning revenue from older, high-traffic content. Additionally, a new reporting tool will soon be available in YouTube Studio to reveal which affiliate products are generating the most revenue for brands.5. Google Ads Certification Now Requires Video Recording: What You Need to Know! - Google Ads has recently updated its certification process, adding a new layer of scrutiny for those taking the exam. The new rules require test-takers to record themselves during the exam, among other requirements.Specifically, you'll need to take a picture of your photo ID, a picture of your face, and record a video of your test-taking environment. These steps are part of Google's efforts to ensure exam integrity. During the exam, a live proctor will monitor your activity via webcam and screen-sharing software. If any unauthorized behavior is noticed, the proctor will pause your exam and message you. The guidelines also prohibit the use of open books, notes, scratch paper, and even restroom breaks during the exam. The new rules have stirred some reactions in the community, with some finding them overly strict, especially for those who work from home and may have other people around. According to Google, the changes aim to maintain the credibility of the Google Ads certification, making it a more reliable indicator of expertise. However, I disagree with Google.6.

Meme coins and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) have emerged as fascinating elements in the world of cryptocurrency, each uniquely intertwining aspects of pop culture, humor, and creativity with blockchain technology. Meme coins, like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, have gripped global attention, gaining a community-driven momentum that propels them into the mainstream spotlight. This surge in interest often seems to preface an upswing in NFTs, a phenomenon that could be attributed to the growing interest in unconventional and playful components of the crypto universe that these meme coins symbolize.   Dogecoin's Daily Transaction Reached Lifetime Highs After 'DRC-20' Tokens Introduced   Historically, significant interest in meme coins has preceded an NFT boom. A prominent example of this trend was seen in late 2020 and early 2021 when the Dogecoin craze was swiftly followed by an NFT frenzy, where digital art, collectibles, and more were being bought and sold at staggering prices. This pattern not only reflects buyer behavior but also the transition of artists, creators, and developers from the meme coin space to the NFT arena, bringing along their innovation and fan base. Thus, while not a rigid rule, the symbiotic relationship between meme coins and NFTs in the crypto landscape is a captivating trend to observe and analyze. Most is spent on the endless positive and negative TV ads you see during a campaign, using SuperPACs to obscure their identities.  While federal rules say this spending is not supposed to be coordinated with the candidate's campaign, political consultants have concocted ways of flouting those regulations, usually without sanction from the FEC.Democracy advocates say Citizens United gave megaphones to corporations which can shout speech over ordinary citizens, increasing influence by special interests over elected officials.  Those officials then make decisions which are contrary to the best interests of the citizens they are supposed to serve. We have articles and groups taking action, at AmericanDemocracyMinute.org.  For the American Democracy Minute, I'm Brian Beihl.

Second, 2FA (Two-factor Authentication). 2FA increases the difficulty for attackers by providing users an additional layer of security to accomplish authentication. Common 2FA methods are: TOTP/OTP (the One Time Password), Authenticator Applications (Bitwarden, KeePassXC,...), and Security Keys (Yubikey). This works similar to ATMs; to authenticate the user must provide both knowledge (account PIN) and a physical object (bank card). Last, but not least, MFA (Multifactor Authentication). Similar to 2FA, MFA offers users security with the addition of biometrics (fingerprint scan, retina scan, facial recognition, and voice recognition). Attackers must overcome the knowledge factor, Possession factor, Inherence/Biometric factor, Time factor, and sometimes Location factor. MORE helpful security information. The January 6th riot was ugly and violent. It was one of the worst things to happen in this country after one of its most difficult years. Protests are the voices of the unheard. The MAGA supporters who gathered in DC that day were exercising their First Amendment right to protest at their Capitol. At the same time, agitators near the Capitol were whipped up into a frenzy, believing they had a patriotic duty to stop the election of Joe Biden. The footage was proof at last of what the Democrats had been warning the country about - the “white supremacist” terrorist uprising had finally come to pass. It would also turn out to be the most important piece of political propaganda in over 50 years that would hand absolute power to those who sought to remove Trump the minute he was elected. It was not, however, an attempted coup or an “insurrection.” For one thing, Trump was the sitting President on January 6th. If anything, they were trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. In their own minds, they were trying to stop a coup, not launch one. Whatever fantasies drove people like Ashli Babbit to become desperate enough that they would sacrifice their own lives is only used to further stoke the flames of hatred and division by our government. That the media, the blue-checks on Twitter, and the political opposition have declared it an “insurrection” without due process is yet another sign that we no longer have a working media. But we already knew that. Most Americans know something bad happened on January 6th. Many believe Trump was responsible. But everyone knows these hearings are for: to stop Trump's movement from overtaking the GOP, getting into Congress, and perhaps recapturing the presidency in 2024. The thing that scares them the most is that Trump might win. The Democrats have made such a mess of things and turned this country into a dystopian nightmare that Trump is the preferred option, even after the January 6th hearings began. One of the reasons Donald Trump remains popular is that he's not afraid to mock the powerful. He's called the media the “enemy of the people.” He destroyed the presidential prospects of Bush's golden child, Jeb! He wrecked Hillary Clinton's chances of being the first female president and knocked down the carefully constructed utopia Obama built. Trump is Public Enemy Number One.After months of extremely violent riots alongside the Black Lives Matter protests, where the politicians who won in 2020 addressed their complaints and completely re-ordered American society, the January 6th rioters probably thought they would be considered and treated the same way. Hundreds of prisoners have been dumped GITMO style into solitary confinement in the DC jail, many without charges brought against them, enduring all manner of torments to get them to name Trump as their instigator. Where are the reporters writing about this? Where is the ACLU or civil rights attorneys fighting for their rights as American citizens? As with all things in the post-2020 world, they dare not say a word lest they too be accused of being racist apologists and domestic terrorist sympathizers. Also, they see them as they always have seen them - human garbage as best, terrorists at worst. The January 6th Select Committee hearings are dressed up to look like Watergate - Authoritative, serious, definitive. But they are not a good faith effort to uncover the truth about that day. Rather, they are about naming Trump and his movement as anti-American, which justifies their ongoing marginalization of the non-compliant. That makes them much more like the McCarthy hearings at the point where the Senator had gone too far.Since Trump shocked the country with a surprise win, the idea that a “racist” could win after Obama's two terms was an existential threat that sent this country reeling. Mass hysteria bloomed in the wake of 2016, and after 2020, there were ongoing witch hunts to root out racists on Twitter, in higher education, in science labs, in fiction, in movies. It was bound to make its way into government, and now, because these committee hearings are making them not about the riot on January 6th but the presumed ideology behind the riot — “white rage” — we have another witch hunt on our hands that looks a lot like 1954. Joseph McCarthy was not wrong about the Communist threat. All of these decades later, it's clear there were spies in our government, and screenwriters were trying to inject that ideology into our culture. Eisenhower shut it down because McCarthy had become paranoid that anyone and everyone might be a communist, including military members. Ike recognized that it was making the post-WWII American weaker, not stronger. That is why he helped destroy McCarthy's credibility and end what we now call McCarthyism. It is hard to police the minds and hearts of Americans in a supposedly free society. Here we are, decades later, and that Communist threat is alive and well and has all but consumed the Democratic Party yet again. But you won't see a witch hunt about that, at least not yet. Trump's America First Party is a threat to the established order. The problem is that they sloppily apply “white supremacy” to that movement. That is why the January 6th hearings feel more like McCarthyism than they do Watergate. Even before Trump won, his supporters had already been spit on, beaten, and dehumanized by the public, whether it was mocking their makeup or age, weight, hair, or education, chasing them out of the restaurants to physically assaulting them all because the media and the politicians had convicted them of being racists, which, in the wake of the Obama era is the absolute worst thing you could be. Here is an example from the run-up to the 2016 election:It never seems to have occurred to the media or the most powerful “elites” that smearing a whole group of people as “racists” might not be healthy for American Democracy. In a culture that tightly policed thought and behavior even before it reached its climax in 2020, Trump's freedom to say whatever he wanted and mock whomever he wanted represents a “clear and present” danger to the utopian Left. It was never about what Trump did. It was always about what he said. Even January 6th isn't so much about what they did. It's much more about why they did it. All points lead back to Trump. They believe January 6th was about race because they believe Trump's MAGA movement is racist. They believe Trump's rise directly resulted from the nation's first Black president, just as they believed the Tea Party was racist. It was just something everyone believed because the media cherry-picked imagery and clips from various speeches and rallies meant to prove all of them were racists. At some point, it just wasn't a question. The only problem is that it isn't true. The Trump movement has always been about class, not racism. It's about the American people who were left behind after that giant sucking sound that evacuated jobs and nearly wrecked the middle class. The Left now cares only about the most privileged and the least privileged. They don't seem to care much about the ones in the middle, the farmers, the truck drivers, the bartenders, and small business owners. How do I know Trump's America First movement is not about race? Because I made an effort to get to know that world. I went looking for the smoking gun because I did not like belonging to a group that was dehumanizing another. I never found the version of Trump the Left believes exists. For instance, Steve Bannon and the MAGA movement have been deliberately and actively recruiting Black and Hispanic voters for at least six years. Bannon calls it “inclusive, nationalist populism.” It's not about race. It's about a global worldview vs. a nationalist one. Somehow the Democrats and the media seemed to have missed this part of the story because it doesn't fit the narrative. That's not to say that there aren't “White Supremacists” in this country. They are a real threat, as we've recently seen in Buffalo, NY. But what the government and media are trying to do, label Trump and his movement as “white supremacists” without proof, is reminiscent of the McCarthy era. What Really Happened on January 6th?The Select Committee looks more like a show trial than a good faith effort to uncover the truth. During Stalin's and Mao's Communist regimes, they counted on show trials to scare citizens into silence and compliance. Here, we have major media outlets and government officials repeating the false notion that it was an “insurrection” driven by “white rage.” If this were a serious committee in search of the truth of what happened on January 6th, the following questions would be addressed:One:How many people knew there was a threat to the Capitol before January 6th, and when did they know it? Polls show even those who believe Trump was responsible want to know the answer to this question. Granted, bringing this up to anyone on the Left means you'll get two responses — the first, you are a conspiracy theorist, and the second is to rationalize it somehow. General Milley was worried about the protest; the FBI had to know. The Mayor of DC knew. How could the most powerful country in the world with the most powerful military in the world have put the Capitol police in such a vulnerable spot that day? Two:What, if any, was the FBI's involvement? I know, I know. Rachel Maddow would not approve of anyone daring to ask this question, but there hasn't been an adequate explanation so far. Why was Stewart Rhodes only charged a year later when he was the ringleader of the Oathkeeper's plans to stop the certification of the vote? Why is Ray Epps still not charged even though he is on tape telling Trump supporters to go into the Capitol? Plenty of other people who never entered the Capitol have been arrested. If the government's overreach is so extreme, arresting anyone and everyone involved in the so-called “insurrection,” why not Epps? From Julie Kelly's book January 6 - How Democrats Used the Capitol Protest to Launch a War on Terror Against the Political Right:“In the early 1990s, the FBI accelerated its focus on the white Christian Right after the events at Waco, Texas and Ruby Ridge; the FBI launched PATCON, short for Patriot Conspiracy, an alleged movement of Christian extremists. In one case, the FBI created a fictional rightwing militia group to use it as an organ to collect information about other suspected militia members. “The tactics of FBI agents infiltrating militias, as well as paid informants being coerced into spying on these groups, and, in some instances, even providing the means and encouragement to carry out violent plots before being arrested, have been criticized as constituting entrapment by using agent provocateurs—agents posing as criminals to justify the financial and social expenses of counter-terrorism,” a 2011 study published by Rutger's University concluded. Was this the case with January 6?Kelly explains how Stewart Rhodes was widely accepted as Person One in the multi-defendant case and was, by all accounts, calling the shots. She continues, But nine months after the first arrests, he was still a free man.“Given…Stewart Rhodes's actions and words leading up to and on 1/6, and given that Rhodes is the leader of the major militia group associated with 1/6—why no indictment for Rhodes?” Beattie asked. Citing similarities to the [Gretchen] Whitmer case, Beattie continued, “If it turns out that an extraordinary percentage of the members of these groups involved in planning and executing the Capitol Siege were federal informants or undercover operatives, the implications would be nothing short of staggering. This would be far worse than the already bad situation of the government knowing about the possibility of violence and doing nothing. Instead, this would imply that elements of the federal government were active instigators in the most egregious and spectacular aspects of 1/6, amounting to a monumental entrapment scheme used as a pretext to imprison otherwise harmless protestors at the Capitol—and in a much larger sense used to “frame the entire MAGA movement as potential domestic terrorists.”All those arrested in connection with Rhodes have been charged with various crimes. You can read those names here. You can look up their charges here. Here are the only 11 charged with “seditious conspiracy” in a graphic I pieced together from the government's site:Of these 11, two have pleaded guilty to “seditious conspiracy,” Joshua James and Brian Ulrich. Julie Kelly continues her convincing case against Rhodes:“Rhodes then gave an interview, which seemed more like damage control, to the New York Times that revealed he had been interviewed by the FBI in May. “Against the advice of a lawyer, Mr. Rhodes spoke freely with the agents about the Capitol assault for nearly three hours,” reporter Alan Feuer wrote in a July 9 article. Rhodes told Feuer that his underlings had “gone off mission” and that he was “frustrated” so many entered the building. “Prosecutors overseeing the investigation of Mr. Rhodes have long admitted that they have struggled to make a case against him. His activities seemed to stay within the boundaries of the First Amendment, one official with knowledge of the matter said.”But Rhodes' posts and texts before January 6 were highly inflammatory, and contradicted his portrayal in the Times. Further, the argument that his online activity and his conduct that day—he did not enter the building, but neither did dozens of other protesters nonetheless charged for various crimes—were protected by the First Amendment also contradicted the government's stance that the events of January 6 rose to the crime of insurrection, not a legitimate political protest. That certainly wasn't the case for Thomas Caldwell, one of the first Oath Keepers arrested and indicted, who also did not enter the building.Beattie followed up his initial reports with an updated piece in October that summarized the Justice Department's nine-month prosecution of the Oath Keepers. Rhodes, Beattie explained, established the conspiracy, recruited the people involved, gave instructions including the use of illegal weapons, and activated the conspiracy, including the entrance into the building in a stack formation, that afternoon. Still, Rhodes remained uncharged.”It took them nine months to finally arrest Rhodes, and to come up with the “seditious conspiracy” charge to lend some heft to their unprecedented treatment of political prisoners who were American citizens protesting against the establishment. The only answer from the media on any of this is to ridicule anyone who would dare ask. It's all a “right-wing conspiracy theory” to them. Ironically, they did the same thing to Woodward and Bernstein when they were investigating Watergate, as the opening of the film All The President's Men illustrates:The New York Times, along with all media outlets on the Left, are working overtime to disprove any FBI involvement and did clear up at least one part of the Ray Epps story, that he whispered into the ear of someone just before he breached the Capitol. According to this story, that is false. But FBI informants are under no obligation to reveal their identities. Epps remains uncharged even though he can be seen on video telling Trump supporters that they must GO into the Capitol. Of course, because no one trusts the media anymore — and why would they — it's hard to know what is true and what isn't, but the point is, something looks fishy about Epps and Rhodes regarding January 6th. If we can't trust media, and we can't trust the FBI we need journalists whose jobs are to hold the powerful to account.Three:What happened to Ashli Babbitt?Writing for the Spectator, Peter Van Buren asks, When will the Committee start showing the video of her being shot by Capitol Police? Babbitt, wearing a Trump flag like a cape, was one of the rioters who smashed the glass on the door leading to the Speaker's Lobby of the Capitol. A plain-clothes Capitol Police officer fired a shot and Babbitt fell into the crowd and died. It was the only shot fired in the riot. A SWAT team just behind Babbitt saw the situation differently and never fired on her or those with her. Babbitt was unarmed and was not resisting arrest because the cop never got that far. He just shot her.He adds another question that needs addressing:“Why, and on whose order, did Capitol police allow 300 people to simply walk into the building without resistance on the afternoon of January 6? And who was the man in a bicycle helmet whom video shows initiating the window-smashing that ended in the shooting of Ashli Babbitt? Why was he welcomed behind police lines once things got out of hand?”Four:There were supposedly pipe bombs placed in buildings in DC, where there were plenty of security cameras. Whatever happened to that investigation? Julie Kelly on Twitter also asks the following question:An Insurrection or a Violent Riot? When Communist revolutionaries shot up the Capitol in 1954 they were charged with “seditious conspiracy” for fighting for Puerto Rico's independence. The sentencing read, “this case makes it clear that these people and their followers have nothing but contempt for our laws, our courts, and our public officials.”Eisenhower strengthened the “seditious conspiracy” laws after he had quietly and behind the scenes put an end to McCarthyism. He wrote while signing the law:The American people are determined to protect themselves and their institutions against any organization in their midst which, purporting to be a political party within the normally accepted meaning, is actually a conspiracy dedicated to the violent overthrow of our entire form of government. One could easily make the argument that the uprisings over the Summer were also political movements that sought to violently overthrow the US government. Or that the #resistance was a four-year-long coup to remove Trump that ended with the 2020 election. No one actually sees it that way because this moment in history is being written solely by one side. But if we had an objective, honest press, they would see that violent protests against our government by the Left are never seen as seditious or treasonous. Rather, they're applauded and admired, or they are simply ignored. Most of the political violence in this country's recent history has come from the Left, not the Right. You can't tell me if it had been Democratic activists who had breached the Capitol, they would have been treated the same way. Julie Kelly writes of the Kavanaugh hearing:“The siege of government buildings escalated. Republican senators were angrily confronted in elevators and outside government buildings. Some received death threats. The outrage was heavily fueled by Democratic leaders including Senator Elizabeth Warren. “Hello resistance!” Warren shouted to a raucous crowd assembled outside on October 4. “I am angry on behalf of women who have been told to sit down and shut up one time too many. This is about hijacking our democracy.” Thousands heeded Warren's call for action. “We were planning to shut down the Capitol Building but the authorities were so scared of this #WomensWave that they shut it down for us,” the official account of the Women's March tweeted that day. “1000+ women, survivors, and allies have gathered in the Hart Senate Building. Every hallway. Every floor.”When Pence announced on the afternoon of October 6, 2018 that Kavanaugh's nomination was confirmed, women shouted from the Senate gallery and were removed. The nation was roiled by the Kavanaugh fiasco for more than a month yet activists opposed to his nomination were considered heroes, not villains, by the national news media. The violence at the Capitol was unusual for Trump supporters because if there was one point of superiority they had over the Left, they were the non-violent side. They weren't boarding up windows on Election Night because they thought Biden would win. They did it because they knew if Trump had won, cities would burn. Now, because of January 6th, they've completely flipped the script. The formerly non-violent Trump supporters are the violent protesters, not the Left. The formerly cop-hating Democrats are now the side that suddenly cares about the Capitol Police. Footage of the Capitol breach has been played over and over and over again, nonstop. By contrast, the media barely covered the riots over the Summer. The fact is that the Left can be as violent as they want, as insistent and demanding of their rights as they want, to fight for the country they want - be as intrusive of public spaces as they want, all because they are protected by the media and blue-check Twitter who are ideologically aligned with them. Trump supporters aren't even considered human beings, let alone American citizens with those same rights. The 2020 election was unprecedented in the alliance of Big Tech, Big Media, and Big Money. It was the most expensive election in history. When you're talking about that much power and money, what else do you have except your right to protest? Whose Big Lie is It Exactly? You can't talk about January 6 without talking about 2020. You can't talk about 2020 without talking about 2016. I plan on writing a different piece about these two elections, but for now, it's important to remember what 2020 was - a reaction to 2016. In the 2016 election, the Trump team had a very specific strategy to keep people home in specific swing states and win a slim Electoral College victory by a few hundred thousand votes. They used Facebook almost exclusively to target three groups to keep them home on Election Day: Black males, using Clinton's “superpredator” comments, young feminists, Bill Clinton's sexual misconduct allegations, and Bernie Sanders supporters who believe the establishment had rigged the primary against Bernie. Facebook allowed Trump's team to microtarget these specific groups in the key swing states. Hillary Clinton's team was offered the same help but they'd turned it down. She was going for a landslide victory, focusing on winning states like Georgia. Trump's strategy worked. Zuckerberg was largely blamed for putting Trump in power, as was the media. Both major players would make up for that in 2020, with $400 million from Zuckerberg to fortify elections for both sides, supposedly. It really only helped the Democrats because they were the side with an enthusiam gap. Trump's side never had an enthusiasm gap and still doesn't. Trump made a strategic error in convincing his supporters to distrust voting machines and save their votes for Election Day. No matter how many of them showed up, there was no way they could close the gap with the massive landslide of ballots Democrats already had collected. 2020 made clear that the media was using its power to swing an election. All of this was bragged about in TIME magazine. They patted themselves on the back for using all their money and resources to remove one person from power and install another. The TIME magazine headline uses the word ‘bi-partisan' the same way the January 6th committee does: to send the not-so-subtle message that Trump supporters are not welcome in American democracy. Here is Ben Shapiro saying as much:It never made sense to me that Trump would have planned a violent riot when he believed Mike Pence, Josh Hawley, and Ted Cruz were going to convince Congress to stop the count and sift through the voting regulations that had been suddenly changed due to COVID and whether or not the ballots were legal. All the violent riot did was wreck his case and hand absolute power to his enemies. To understand how you get to a rally on January 6th, let alone a riot, it's necessary to understand how the frustration built up over the past six years. Trump was not treated like the President of the United States not for one minute, not for a day in his four years in power. He was always treated like an imposter, a cockroach to be exterminated from the establishment so his human garbage supporters could disappear back to the hinterlands. A podcaster named Darryl Cooper wrote a now-infamous tweet thread that lays it out. But it was when Tucker Carlson read the whole thing on Fox News, millions of people heard it. Our media and government would be smart to pay attention to this: Why Should You Care? Why do I care? Why would I threaten to blow up any social cred I have left caring about Trump supporters or January 6th prisoners? It's partly because no one else cares about them except a small handful of people like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz. Julie Kelly fights for their rights daily. But more to the point, what I have in common with Carlson, Shapiro, and Bannon is simply this: I am sensitive to abuse of power against those with less power. It probably comes from having been bullied as a child. I will always stand up for those I feel are getting picked on, even at the expense of my own social network and status as a former blue-check Democrat on Twitter.2020 was hard on all Americans. From lockdowns, to mask wars, to COVID, to isolation - suicides rose sharply, as did gun deaths. Mass shooters were radicalized almost overnight. Somehow people could understand how so many could spill out onto the streets for the largest protest in American history after being pent up for months but they could not extend that same understanding to the other side when they lost their minds on January 6th. Probably the most insidious of all is the idea that people who call themselves Patriots, whose movement is called AMERICA FIRST, would be labeled “domestic terrorists,” “insurrectionists,” and traitors. The media narrative that they live in fear of “replacement theory” and are driven by “white rage” is false. For many Trump supporters, in a country that has all but abandoned them, all they have is their patriotic love of country. Now the one thing they have left is being taken from them all in the name of politics, all because the Democrats and Never Trumpers have candidates who can't beat Trump. We get nowhere by dehumanizing each other. We need leadership to bring this country together under one roof before we go too far to turn back around. Canceling Developers for Mistakes? You're Next!

Healthy Software Developer

Are you looking around on your software project and just waiting to see someone fail? Are you quick to condemn a manager or developer and cast them useless after a single mistake? Today we're going to talk about how canceling developers and other IT professionals for mistakes can hold you back from the career you want in software. When I first began developing software, I wasn't particularly ambitious. I needed to make a living to support my wife and son, but I came from a background of partying and playing in a band. But after a few short years I had several promotions and raises, and it started to go to my head. With each new success, my pride got bigger. Once software projects started getting complicated, I started looking for people to blame. The scrum master didn't understand agile enough. The operations team wasn't making it easy enough to release changes into production. The other developers weren't following my coding patterns. Yeah, I became an elitist jerk. But as I've told you many times on this channel, I fell hard eventually. A victim of career-long burnout, I lost my job, a lot of money, and sunk into depression. But when I came out of it, I made this channel and started giving software developers and engineers career advice. It also led me to learn how to work better myself - and help you be a healthy software developer. A moment though of reflection for yourself: are you on the way there? Starting to get rewards and recognition for developing software? Is it getting easier to see flaws in developers and other people on your software project, making you quick to judge? Are you canceling the people who can help you for simple mistakes? If we're humble and honest, we've all made mistakes. And I'm sure I'm going to make many more, whether on a software project, coaching you on your career, or on this channel. I'm pretty sure if you're willing to take an honest look at yourself, you know you're going to too. But you've made mistakes in the past and been forgiven. So should you be more forgiving too? Can we really be fair canceling anyone? What would it be like if all our teams were more like this? What if we worked together assuming we'll make mistakes, and not being surprised? What if we spent more time forgiving, learning, and teaching - and less blaming? Imagine the courage we could have to try and do risky things that might be breakthroughs with our products, technologies, and careers? India Policy Watch: Prediction TimeInsights on burning policy issues in India— RSJHappy New Year! This is a time of hope, optimism and new beginnings. But 2022 has signalled it has no time for such niceties. It is already hitting high notes on all kinds of wrong metrics - peak COVID-19 positivity rates, deeper social polarisation and dangerous levels of toxicity on social media. And it is only the first week. Maybe 2022 intends to get all the bad news out early and then coast on calm waters. That’s the hope. Hope, like Andy Dufresne taught us, is a good thing; maybe the best of things. We write this newsletter because we are hopeful about the future. We believe we can make an impact, however small, on the demand side of the policy equation. That making people aware of policy choices and helping them anticipate the unintended will lead to a change in the supply side of politics. There are two preconditions for this to happen which we have assumed to hold true. One, people have time and mental space available for discussions that matter to their lives. Two, a belief we can arrive at what’s good for us through those debates and discussions. But there are days when you wonder if these hold. The cacophonous noise on issues of identity, validity and nationalism drowns all other conversations. There’s no conceding of ground regardless of the merits of an issue. Any factoid that questions your existing hypothesis isn’t seen as worthy of contemplation. The more perceptive might register a mild dissonance. Instead, you wait for your side to dig out a counter that reconfirms your bias and negates the dissonance. Politics is often considered to be performative for the audience that’s the electorate. Now, the audience has donned the makeup and is declaiming on stage. The possibility of consensus on what’s good is increasingly remote. And once you are in this territory, the public part of public policy goes out of the window. Whatever remains then is no different from a fiat. But then hope is a good thing. And so we begin the new year with hope. Like those last lines from The Great Gatsby:“...tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…And one fine morning- So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”Like last year, we start with that timeless lazy way to fill pages during this time of the year. Here is my random list of predictions for 2022.Economy#1: It will be more of the same for India on growth, inflation and fiscal deficit. Factoring in the Covid base effect, we will be in the 5-5.5 per cent growth range (if you take the base of FY 21). Inflation (CPI) will be around 5 per cent with an occasional jump to 6 per cent during the year despite threatening to go out of control. Maybe three interest rate hikes (a total of 75 bps) during the year will keep a lid on it. Public markets will moderate a bit (around 10 percent upside). Private market valuations will continue to be in bubble territory. There’s a lot of liquidity that’s already raised and ready to be deployed for start-ups. China won’t attract it as it will continue to go down the path of self-reliance and its notion of an equal society. So, expect even more than the $36 billion that flowed into startups in 2021. There will be more gushing commentary on the Indian entrepreneurial energy. That will be appropriated to show how well the economy is doing. The money flowing for Indian startups is good news, of course. But it cannot be the only metric to determine the health of the economy. The divergence between the formal and informal economy and the K-shaped recovery that we have written about (“Two Indias”) will continue.#2: There won’t be much to write about reforms. Some attempts at piecemeal MSP reforms will be attempted to make up for the repealed farm laws. The National Monetisation Pipeline will get going but the progress will be modest. A couple of more disinvestment proposals of PSUs (including banks) will be taken up. But this will be for raising revenues rather than a planned strategy to make PSUs market competitive. The LIC IPO will just go over the line and that will be the big event to showcase reforms. All of this doesn't mean we will be short of big announcements about reforms or intention to reform.Politics#1: BJP election machine will continue its winning run barring the odd defeats in Punjab and Goa. The big prize, UP, will be fought hard but BJP will win a safe majority. The bahujan vote of the depleted BSP will shift to it more than to SP and that will make all the difference. By the end of the year, there will be a more formal coming together of regional parties as opposition. Some sort of a “front” will be formalised.#2: There will be a split in the Congress. The party in its current form is untenable and beyond a point, there will be nothing to lose for those who split it. The key question is who will lead it - those who have a political base and think Congress leadership is a liability that cannot be carried along any further, or those without a political base but with strong ideological opposition to the BJP. My guess is it will be the latter. In any case, it won’t make much of a difference.Society #1: Demographic anxiety is now a thing in Indian society. The desire to address it or to be seen to address it will animate much of our social discourse. Expect love jihad and anti-conversion laws in various states, some kind of population control bill, a revival of CAA and a push for a uniform civil code during the year. There’s that early 20th century Europe playbook of stoking demographic anxiety that plays on a threat to the survival of a civilisation or a way of living. The pitch will be queered on this. Indian society is a fertile ground for it. This land can be shown to its people as a palimpsest. But it can, perhaps more easily, be shown as a glorious, ancient civilisation that’s been asphyxiated for centuries by ‘outsiders’. A true revival of it requires setting the past records straight and the right demographic arithmetic. That’s the view and it is open season for this. There will be more performative gestures that will be broadcast as reclaiming of that civilisation. #2: The last week saw the mainstreaming of the ‘trads’ and ‘raitas’ nomenclature. If you don’t know about this sharp distinction that’s emerging within the right-wing, here’s a short introduction to it. We have written in the past Schmitt’s ‘friend-enemy’ distinction in politics. Politics is driven by the idea of having an enemy; the other. For much of the last decade, this was the left-liberal cabal (Lutyens, Khan market, NYT, Soros, Amnesty etc). Even when much of news and propaganda came to be dominated by the right-wing, there was a strawman of this all-powerful cabal of anti-nationals that was kept alive because the notion of an enemy is critical. But once you have decimated it, what do you do? You look for the enemy within. That’s what trads versus raitas is all about. It isn’t a surprise really. This is something I discussed in Amit Varma’s podcast last February.  Miscellaneous#1: There will be serious big tech regulations that will come into play in America. Others will follow suit. India will have a version of this along with dollops of atmanirbharta. This will mean some tough days for big consumer tech giants in India.#2: China will struggle for growth. Demographics, debt and delusion have come together in China in a way that will make it difficult for it to sustain growth. China-Russia relationship will get stronger with their support for each other and for other authoritarian regimes around the world. #3: Meta, Crypto, Decentralisation, NFT (and everything else pumped up by the Valley tech bros) will see their hype abate (about 25-30 percent drop in asset value). When John Terry starts buying Bored Ape NFTs, you know the whole thing has jumped the shark. About time too. Global Policy Watch: A Season of Industrial PoliciesBringing an Indian perspective to burning global issues— Pranay KotasthaneOn December 29, the union government issued guidelines for another production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, this time for textiles. In all, there are thirteen sectors — from electronics to steel — where PLI schemes are under various stages of execution. We had given such schemes the full Anticipating the Unintended treatment in edition #86. In this edition, I want to step back and review the merits and demerits of industrial policies, of which PLI is a specific variant. What’s an Industrial Policy?Scott Lincicome of the Cato Institute has a neat definition. Industrial policies are“targeted and directed government interventions intended to achieve specific, market‐beating industrial and commercial outcomes within national borders. The specificity of these targeted interventions is what makes them different from other kinds of broader, more general interventions.”In contrast, broader pro-market policies that are not sector-specific such as reducing corporate tax rates, reducing import duties, simplifying labour laws and making land acquisition easier are not categorised as industrial policies. Why Should You Care?Industrial policies are all the rage today and not just in India. Industrial policies never went in demand really. The theory of change behind industrial policies is enticingly simple: “to get an uncompetitive business sector of yours to grow, subsidise investment in that sector over the next few years out of taxpayer money.” And as you can imagine, industrial policies are quick-fix solutions that any policymaker would love. So, one or the other industrial policy solution is always cooking in government departments regardless of the sector and the country. The reason why such policies are now getting concurrent attention worldwide is because of one reason: China. With all the talk of reducing dependence on Chinese technology and manufacturing firms, entire sectors are being deemed as “strategic” across countries. And once a sector gets termed as strategic, a “strategic” industrial policy is never far away. And so, the US, EU, India, and China itself, are all launching a spate of new incentive schemes to reshore manufacturing and technology firms. Do Industrial Policies Work? They are popular, alright. But are industrial policies effective? In this section, I’ll review some arguments for and against them. Batting for industrial policy, albeit in the American context, Steven K Vogel declares in a Niskanen Center paper that industrial policy is both imperative and inevitable going ahead. His argument is that all critical goals of the future — reducing carbon emissions, mitigating climate change, and strengthening supply chain resilience — would be unachievable without targeted government support. And that achieving these goals cannot be left to private firms because of three reasons. One, only the government can formulate national missions. Two, the private sector is bound to underinvest in R&D due to positive externalities. And three, only government can resolve coordination or network failures. Batting against industrial policies are people at the Cato Institute (of course). Their paper Industrial Policy: A Bad Idea Is Back is a searing critique of industrial policies due to four reasons that block success. One, centralised attempts to pick winning critical technologies are more likely to fail as the government does not know it all. Even when the government picks up the right industries for support, it often ends up picking up the wrong products and companies. Two, as you can guess, targeted support enables rent-seeking. Companies that get government backing block competition and seek to mould the scheme for their own benefits rather than policy objectives. Costs balloon, performance falters, bailouts get demanded, and political considerations become paramount. Three, industrial policies come at an immense cost to society. Besides the “seen” cost overruns, there are “unseen” opportunity costs, misallocation of resources, and deadweight losses due to higher tariffs. Finally, industrial policies don’t pick winners but it’s winners that pick industrial policies. This means even in sectors where such policies created a few successful companies, “government support mostly went to companies that could have obtained private funding or produced outcomes that the market could have provided (and did previously without government assistance)”.Where Does That Leave Us?From an Indian perspective, I want to amplify two concerns about industrial policies. First, as the previous section suggests, the real problem with industrial policies is in their design and implementation. Vogel argues that one can get industrial policy ‘right’ by doing three things: set clear priorities, deploy the appropriate policy tools; and structure government institutions to limit political capture and maximize policy effectiveness. Each of them requires high state capacity. While the first two can be still resolved as they are not transaction-intensive, a lack of adequate regulatory capacity to prevent companies from gaming the system is a big challenge in India.Second, the opportunity cost argument is especially important for a 2000$ per capita income economy. Given that every rupee of revenue raised by the government costs three rupees to the Indian society, industrial policies are by default expensive instruments. Reflecting on both sides of the argument, my current position is that industrial policies should be deployed very selectively, in sectors that are uber-strategic or where Indian companies enjoy a comparative advantage globally. For example, I would support an industrial policy for building a speciality semiconductor fab in India but I would oppose one that attempts to make display panels in India. Reducing import dependence from China cannot be the driving reason to shower billions of dollars for as many as thirteen sectors. We shouldn’t forget that incentive schemes are finally band-aid solutions. They might create a few national champions but to eliminate the cost disabilities lakhs of Indian companies face, there is no alternative to improving tax, business, intellectual property, and trade regimes. Post Script: Industrial Policies for SemiconductorsThe union government launched four schemes worth a total of $10billion to build a semiconductor and display ecosystem in India. I’ve given these policies the Anticipating the Unintended treatment here and here.To understand the European Union’s perspective on industrial policies in this sector, I spoke with Mathieu Duchâtel in an episode for the All Things Policy Podcast. * from Emily Dickinson’s “Hope” is the thing with feathersHomeWorkReading and listening recommendations on public policy matters[Book] Diana L. Well-developed SEO strategies for eCommerce sites drive organic traffic to your website. This is a huge benefit as it makes your products and other offers known by your target customers What Is SEO, and Why Should You Care? SEO doesn't just improve the performance of your website. It also increases your rankings in the organic search of search engines like Google. SEO activities for an eCommerce website start by filling it with high-quality content. (Important for Fat Loss!)The genetic set point is the percentage of body fat your body is most comfortable with, and dropping body fat any lower would lead to several side effects that may include hunger, moodiness, irritability, loss of sleep, loss of sex drive, hair loss, weakness and lethargy. That set point differs from person to person, some of us at lower body fat percentage and some at a much higher percentage. We all have our genetic set point.Your body adapts to the particular percentage it has been accustomed to and wants to stay there where it's safe and manageable. The body will regulate hunger hormones to get you to eat just enough to keep you at that range. The good news? You can alter your genetic set point!  We've noticed that if changes in calorie intake and expenditure are made at a slow and at a steady pace, your body will tend to be less resistant to the new body fat percentage changes you're trying to achieve. Here are some steps you can take: Maintain a minor daily calorie deficit Eat lean protein with every meal for sateityAdd 1 Large salad at midday + 1 cooked vegetable evening for sateityIncrease your NEATAdd fruits for dessertFind exercise you like. Sponsored by Datadog: pythonbytes.fm/datadog Brian #1: Surviving Django (if you care about databases) Daniele Varazzo Hard to summarize, but this is an interesting perspective on getting to know your database better and using database migrations and database schemas, etc. instead of relying on Django’s seemingly agnostic view of databases. Following the article is a nice civilized discussion in the comments between the author, Paolo Melchiorre, Andrew Godwin, and others. Interesting comment by Andrew: “I agree that at some point in a project/company's life, if it's big enough, SQL migrations are the way to go. … Migrations in the out-of-the-box state are mostly there to supplement rapid prototyping, and then like a lot of Django, can be removed/ignored progressively if and when you outgrow the single set of design constraints we had to choose for them.” Michael #2: Python Numbers and the Flyweight design pattern Working on allocation and other memory internals from my upcoming Python Memory Management and Tips course Flyweight design pattern via Wikipedia Python numbers are expensive ( >= 28 bytes each) Python does not allocate more than one int in the range [-5, 256] Example code: app_flyweight.py Also working on a Python Design Patterns course and Flyweight is back there too. Brian #3: What Are Python Wheels and Why Should You Care? Brad Solomon Second half is about creating wheels I’m more interested in the first half, a discussion of wheels from the users perspective. Most package authors now all this stuff, or most of it. But this is a nice quick intro for the rest of the Python ecosystem as package users. If you pip install something that isn’t a wheel, it’s probably a tarball. pip downloads the tar.gz file builds a wheel, which includes calling setup.py labels it then installs it For pre-wheeled packages, the build and label aren’t needed, so it’ s faster Also, the download size is usually smaller, so that part is also faster. Wheels are essentially zip files with specially crafted filenames that tell installers what Python versions and platforms the wheel will support: {dist}-{version}(-{build})?-{python}-{abi}-{platform}.whl ex: cryptography-2.9.2-cp35-abi3-macosx_10_9_x86_64.whl Wheels can have platform specific builds, like for macosx vs unix, etc. Advantages of wheels: install faster smaller cut the setup.py execution out no need for compiler as they can be os specific auto generated .pyc files provide consistency Michael #4: Pandas_Alive By Jake McKew Pandas_Alive is intended to provide a plotting backend for animated matplotlib charts for Pandas DataFrames, similar to the already existing Visualization feature of Pandas. With Pandas_Alive, creating stunning, animated visualizations is as easy as calling df.plot_animated() Also supports: GeoSpatialData with geopandas, basemaps with contextily, writing to GIF in memory (no external dependencies), progress bars with tqdm Since release 3 weeks ago, Pandas-Alive has been downloaded over 11,000 times off PyPI which is absolutely unreal Comes with visuals :) Brian #5: How To Use the Python Map Function Kathryn Hancox map() is so useful, but not obvious to people coming from other languages. If you don’t use it much, that’s fine, but it’s nice to review occasionally because it does more than I originally gave it credit for. This tutorial walks through: Normal map use with a lambda function applied to a list. Using user defined functions. Actually this bit is more confusing than it needs to be as it has a function returning a map object, which is kinda weird in the particular circumstance. But doesn’t detract from the rest too much. Using built in functions to map. Using functions that take more than one argument and using map across multiple iterables. Takeaways map() only applies the function one element at a time during iteration, so it’s efficient with large data sets and with sequences that won’t reach the end. Remember you can use lambdas, built in functions, and you own functions with map. You can use functions that take multiple arguments, but that requires passing in multiple iterables, one for each function argument. Comprehensions are often just as useful, especially for small data sets, but don’t forget about map. Michael #6: Version your SQL schemas with git + automatically migrate them automigrate project Automigrate is a command-line tool for SQL migrations. Unlike other migration tools, it uses git history to do diffs on create table statements instead of forcing you to write up/down diffs for every change. This tool doesn't make you write & manage a giant folder of up/down migrations. It uses git history to infer them instead, and to version production databases. Not as nice as alembic (even though it portrays itself otherwise). But if you are writing DDL by hand, this is much better! Speaking of which: Generate ORM definitions from SQL: Experimental sqlalchemy generator in sa_harness.py. Try it out with: python -m automig.lib.sa_harness 'test/schema/*.sql' Extras: Michael: Get notified of release for new courses at training.talkpython.fm/getnotified Excel to Python Getting Started in Data Science Python Memory Management and Tips Getting started with Git Python Design Patterns Jokes! “Engineers remove dead code after dropping a feature flag”, Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee, 1893, Oil on canvas “CSS without comments”, Pablo Picasso, 1912 “Experienced developer deploys hotfix on production”, Francisco Goya, Oil on canvas, circa 1788

Why Should You Care about IASTM? Let's define IASTM first. It stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation. If you have a back problem you will want to read more about IASTM. There are several variations of tissue manipulation. Oriental Medicine uses cupping in a similar way as IASTM. Another popular variation is known as Graston. For our purposes, these are all similar and achieve similar goals.A mechanical back problem usually has a soft tissue component. From my experience, these soft tissue components involve restricted tissue motion resulting in fibrous adhesions in the fascia. The fascia is the covering on the muscles that are nerve-rich. When there are repetitive forces placed on the muscles the fascia develops adhesions that act like scar tissue on a smaller scale. The adhesions cause increased pain due to the increased friction when fascia comes into contact with adjacent fascia. Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation helps to break down the adhesions thereby reducing the pain caused by friction. It is a helpful treatment but only one tool in a full toolbox. The Back Pain Project uses several tools to achieve a pain-free back. The complete program culls from many healing modalities to bring about lasting relief from back pain. As far as we know The Back Pain Project is the most thorough program out there for treating bad backs. Dr.Brian McKay has been treating bad low backs for over 28 years. Over 20 years ago he was among the earliest adopters of non-surgical spinal decompression. Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation is a valuable adjunct to spinal decompression when treating back pain. Hopefully, you agree that more treatment is more beneficial to eliminate back pain.

Healthy Married Life | Finding Balance in our Busy World For Your Marriage

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2020 35:28

I usually like to give the background of a podcast to put the message in some form of context. There were two things that inspired this series. One of our listeners had mentioned that she was on her third and her new husband on his second marriage and they had wanted to make their marriage work. She mentioned that she would like to get her husband listening to the podcast, but was not sure how. This got us thinking on this subject, but we did not have the time to really dig into it at the time she asked it. Then, Andy Stanley's recent series, Ask It, brought up an interesting point when it came to seeking the counsel of others. One of the thrusts of his message was don't let your pride prevent you from listening to wise counsel. At the end of the message, Tim (from my men's group was sitting behind me) had commented that I probably see pride impacting people every day in my divorce practice, but oddly enough, I was not thinking about that. I was thinking about how I can apply the wisdom of the message to myself to make sure that I did not let pride bring me down. I was thinking about triggers to put in place to prevent pride from seeping in and blocking the wise counsel of others. Tim's comment, however, did bring back a flood of memories about former clients that have argued with me about the legal system and how their case is going to turn out, even though they have never been through a divorce themselves. Meanwhile, I, as a divorce lawyer, have been through thousands of divorces. They will often discount my advice because their emotions or their pride gets in the way. When pride gets in the way, they think that they had nothing to do with the demise of their marriage. So, we began to think, what would be good advice to those who wish to improve their lives and marriages by seeking the wise counsel of others. We started to think about the why's, when's, what's, and how's associated with seeking out the advice of others to help grow your marriage or deal with a difficult situation in your marriage. With those thoughts, this Four Part Series was born. Why four parts? Seeking the counsel of others can be as harmful as it is helpful. We did not want to pack a ton of information into a single hour and not explore each aspect deep enough. We also don't want people making the wrong decisions when it comes to seeking the advice of others. In my divorce practice, I have seen people clearly ignore problems, not seek the wise counsel of others, and then end up in my office. Then, there are others who have sought “counsel,” but the wrong kind. They either seek the counsel of a co-worker (and that “counsel” ultimately leads to an adulterous relationships), or they seek the counsel of people who are not in a good place to give wise counsel. In all these situations, the ultimate result is a divorce. Part 1 – Why should you seek out the wise advice of others? We are going to address this from two angles – the wisdom of the Ages and what modern science has shown us that actually supports the wisdom of the Ages. Wisdom of the Ages If you go back almost 3000 years ago, you will find King Solomon, who ruled over Israel from about 970 to 931 BC. He is widely considered one of, if not, the wisest man that ever lived. Kings from around the known world send emissaries with tremendous amounts of wealth to pay King Solomon for his wisdom. In many respects, he built an incredible amount of wealth from his wisdom. He wrote down some of his wisdom and shared it with us in Proverbs. Despite his incredible wisdom, he believed that seeking out the wise counsel of others was critical for the wise man. He wrote a number of passages in Proverbs on this very issue. Below is what he shared in Proverbs. Proverbs 12:15 – The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel. Proverbs 11:14 – Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory. Proverbs 13:10 – Through insolence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel. Proverbs 19:20 – Listen to counsel and accept discipline, That you may be wise the rest of your days. Proverbs 24:6 – For by wise guidance you will wage war, And in abundance of counselors there is victory. Proverbs 27:9 – Oil and perfume make the heart glad, So a man's counsel is sweet to his friend. Proverbs 15:31-33 – He whose ear listens to the life-giving reproof Will dwell among the wise. He who neglects discipline despises himself, But he who listens to reproof acquires understanding. The fear of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom, And before honor comes humility. The irony of the above is that at one point in his life his Pride began to take over, and he stopped taking his own advice. His pride prevented him from seeking out the wise counsel of others, and the nation of Israel suffered as a result. While Israel arguable hit its height of glory during his reign, the end of his reign also began its downfall. Even if you are not a religious person, you will still find others throughout history giving the same advice. For example: “Search well and be wise, nor believe that self-willed pride will ever be better than good counsel.” Aeschylus – Greek playwright and deep religious thinker from before 500BC – “Consult your friend on all things, especially on those which respect yourself. His counsel may then be useful where your own self-love might impair your judgment.” Lucius Annaeus Seneca – 4 BC – AD 65. He was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and in one work humorist, of the Silver Age of Latin literature. “There is as much difference between the counsel that a friend giveth, and that a man giveth himself, as there is between the counsel of a friend and of a flatterer. For there is no such flatterer as is a man's self.” Lord Francis Bacon – January 1561 – 9 April 1626, He was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, essayist, and author. He served both as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. After his death, he remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution. I could go on with more examples from famous leaders in the past 300 years, but I think you get the point. Modern Science Flash-forward to today – Modern science has revealed many things that only support the wisdom of King Solomon some 3000 years ago. In a recent episode of the show “Brain Games,” they gave real life examples (through games) of how our bodies handle stressful situations through bio-chemical reactions. In stressful situations, our brain can cause the release of cortisol and adrenaline which shuts off learning and short term memory sections of the brain. Under many circumstances, our brain cannot distinguish between someone yelling at us and a lion roaring at us. The bodies' response to the stress of the situation is the same. As a result, the reasoning section of our brain can temporarily shut down. What this means is that if you are dealing with a stressful situation, you brain may be generating hormones that are limiting your ability to make a wise decision. I recently read an interesting article called “What is Neuro-Literacy and Why Should You Care?” published in Family Lawyer Magazine and written by Pauline H. Tesler. The subtitle to her article was New brain science, positive psychology and neuroeconomics can transform your work in conflict resolution. To summarize the lengthy article, she said that there is a growing body of evidence that carried potentially revolutionary implications for our day to day work as lawyers, depicting a brain that is driven not by reason, but by emotion. Again, I am sure that everyone reading this can reflect back on a time when they made a rash ‘emotional and impulsive' decision that they wish they had not. If they had decided to step back from the situation, they would have made a wiser choice. One last example comes from Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. During his course, we learned that scientists have been studying the brain's responses to certain purchases using an MRI. When people purchased items with a credit card, the pleasure centers of the brain actually registered. When people purchased items with cash, the pain centers of the brain actually registered in the thought process. What does this show us? Emotion influences our buying decisions possibly more than rational thought. What does all this mean? Ok, so some of you might be saying, “I understand that a bunch of dead, very wise men are telling me to seek wise counsel and modern science is telling me that my decisions are often controlled or influenced by ancient, bio-chemical responses, so what does that mean for me and my marriage. Are you saying that I should seek out wise counsel just because a bunch of wise, dead people told me to?” Not exactly. Let me summarize with leaving you three simple reasons why you should seek wise counsel to help build a healthy marriage: 1. Wise Counsel is not blinded by your Pride. Pride blinds us. All too often, pride can put us in a position that we are blinded by what is really happening around us. We tell ourselves that “I know what I am doing and I don't need anyone else to tell me something that I don't already know,” or “I am not doing anything wrong. This situation is all because my Wife will not (fill in blank). . . or my Husband refuses to (fill in blank) . . . “ Pride prevents you from self-examining your life and your marriage. Wise counsel can shine a light on that pride and open your eyes to potential problems you may be having in your relationship with your spouse. Your counsel will not be blinded by your pride. 2. Wise counsel does not get clouded by your emotions. a. Emotion clouds our thinking. b. Sorrow, depression, hate, anger will cloud your thinking. Those emotions can be caused by any number of things either in the marriage or outside the marriage, but they all will negatively impact your marriage. c. Wise counsel is like a Lighthouse in the fog of emotion that makes it difficult to think. 3. Wise counsel is not overcome by your stress a. Stress can prevent us from thinking or self-evaluating b. That stress can come from inside the relationship or outside the relationship. Let's say you are going through a rough time at work, and you bring that home to the children and your spouse. Your Wife points it out and you just ignore her or lash out at her. For whatever reason, you have a tough time accepting what is obvious to those around you. c. Wise counsel can help you cope with the stress so it does not impact your relationship with your spouse.

One is a Senate Bill sponsored by senator Gideon Moi, while the other is a National Assembly Bill sponsored by the Ministry of ICT. The right to privacy is a fundamental human right. In Article 31, our constitution says that every person has the right to privacy, which includes the right not to have - their person, home or property searched; their possessions seized; information relating to their family or private affairs unnecessarily required or revealed; or the privacy of their communications infringed. Episode 020: State of MOC Update with Dr. Meg Edison Maintenance of Certification (MOC) continues to weigh down physicians encouraging early retirement, burnout, and financial strains leading to all sorts of other personal and professional problems. The private specialty boards (ABIM, ABA, ABP, etc) are under the auspices of the ABMS which sets many of the rules that are ruining physicians' lives. The most important of these is the emergence of time-limited certifications forcing physicians into a never ending wheel of testing and expensive time consuming busywork. My guest, Dr. Meg Edison, is a pediatrician who has had enough. She has a personal story of harm brought to her patients by the MOC process and has been fighting back. Physicians everywhere are starting to push back against these private unaccountable boards that are lobbying to put physicians out of work who refuse to comply with their asinine training components. What was once just a legislative battle in many states in the country, physicians have started new tactics to fight back against the oppressive boards - through the courts. With a case against the osteopathic board settled for over $2 million the noose is (hopefully) closing in on these corrupt accreditation practices. Now, Dr. Wes Fisher (from Episode 009) has just completed funding for a class action lawsuit which has the makings of busting the whole syndicate wide open. Dr. Meg Edison is a general pediatrician and at the forefront of the battle against MOC. She is pictured here on the left. show notes State of MOC: This is the go-to website to see what the legislative progress is for every state in the US. The site ranks the three aspects of medical practice freedom: freedom from MOC for licensure, hospital privileges, and insurance payment. What is Narcissistic Abuse? Why Should You Care? With #WNAAD Founder Bree Bonchay - Talking World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day with Founder Bree Bonchay - As one of the featured speakers this year, I am so excited about WNAAD! Meet Bree Bonchay, the founder, and find out why this day matters so much. World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day (WNAAD) occurs on June 1st every year. Established in 2016, WNAAD is a growing global movement dedicated to raising the profile of narcissistic abuse, providing public pathology education, resources for survivors, and effect policy change. WNAAD is an international event that is recognized worldwide. According to Bree Bonchay, the founder, Many of the people who suffer from narcissistic abuse (a form of psychological and emotional abuse) aren't even aware that what they are experiencing is a legitimate form of abuse, and when they become aware they are being abused, they have a difficult time describing it because it's so hard to put the finger on. We came up with the hashtag, #IfMyWoundsWereVisible, because unlike physical abuse where a single strike or blow, often leaves marks or bruises and qualifies an act of domestic violence, narcissistic abuse is invisible. Narcissistic abuse is the sum of many unseen injuries.
