In this insightful episode of the Low Season Traveller podcast, host Ged interviews Stuart McDonald, founder of Travelfish, a comprehensive online travel resource focused on Southeast Asia. Stuart shares the evolution of Travelfish from its humble beginnings in 2004 to becoming a trusted guide for independent travelers, his journey into responsible tourism through his master's degree, and his upcoming ambitious 64-day overland journey from Bali to the UK.Guest Profile: Stuart McDonald is the founder of Travelfish, an independent online travel guide focused on Southeast Asia. With nearly three decades of experience traveling in the region since 1993, Stuart has transformed from a backpacker and guidebook writer to an advocate for "less bad travel" - his term for more sustainable and responsible tourism practices. He recently completed a Master's degree in Responsible Tourism Management at Leeds Beckett University in the UK.Notable Quotes"Travel fish is like an old school guidebook, like a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide or whatever. But only online." "The pandemic wasn't great for business. I went back to school, back to do my masters at Leeds in the UK in responsible tourism management, and that sort of turned me on to a lot more of the stuff around sustainable tourism and responsible travel." "A lot of the issues that we face today in tourism are not new... they were writing about them in the seventies in academia... This knowledge has sort of been sitting around for perhaps 50 years, half a century. And the industry side of things, they're only just sort of starting to think about maybe getting on board with some of these concepts in the last decade." This episode offers valuable insights into the evolution of sustainable tourism in Southeast Asia through the lens of Stuart McDonald's extensive experience. His journey from traditional guidebook writer to advocate for responsible tourism practices demonstrates how the industry is slowly shifting toward more sustainable models. Stuart's upcoming overland journey represents his commitment to "less bad travel" and provides a fascinating case study in making more responsible travel choices despite the inconveniences they may present. Listeners interested in sustainable tourism, Southeast Asia travel, or alternative modes of transportation will find this conversation both informative and inspiring.Resources Mentioned:Travelfish website: A comprehensive online travel guide for Southeast AsiaCouch Fish Newsletter: Stuart's regular updates on travel and tourism in the regionGlass: The photo-sharing platform Stuart now uses instead of InstagramSeat61: Helpful resource for train travel planningCaravanistan: Resource for travel in Central AsiaUncornered Market: Development work in Uzbekistan and Central Asia

From rock & roll to contemporary pop, Mixing Pop and Politics: A Marxist History of Popular Music (Repeater, 2024) is a timely and original exploration of popular music's role in shaping our society. Told through a Marxist lens, Toby Manning traces the last seventy years of political and social upheavals through its most iconic US and UK-based music. Mixing Pop and Politics examines the connections between popular music and political ideology and explores themes like the liberation of rock 'n' roll, containment of girl groups, defiance of glam, resignation of soft rock, the communal spirit of disco, and the individualism of 1980s pop. Spanning the early 1950s to today, the book reveals how music—from doo-wop to hip-hop, punk to crunk, and grunge to grime—has both reflected and resisted the political forces of its time. I miss Amoeba Records in Hollywood. When I was working a few blocks north of there, I'd visit a few times a week during my lunch break. They had a warehouse full of oddities of all mediums and genres, books, films and memorabilia. It was on one of these mid day excursions that I came across an album entitled: “The Rough Guide to Psychedelic Africa”. This was earmarked and marketed for people just like me. The music contained therein varied quite a bit from my idea of psych, but I love discovering new stuff so I couldn't pass it by.“Guitar Boy” was one of the tracks on this collection, by Nigerian national hero - the musician, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor Sir Victor Uwaifo (1941-2021), who achieved the very first gold record there with “Jeromi” in 1965. The genre is called High Life, developed in Ghana, a former British Colony on the west coast of Africa. It's style is immediately recognizable as Afro-Cuban, with it's fusion of Afro beats with western melodies played by guitars plucked in staccato arpeggios. Guitar Boy was banned for awhile because of it's connection to a failed coup in April '67, which was led by a Lt. Samuel Arthur (later executed), who marched prematurely into Broadcasting House Accra, announced the coup, and ordered the record to be played. Wow! You can't make this shit up.

Kenny Dunn grew up in Upper Dublin, Pennsylvania, a suburb north of Philadelphia. With a Bachelor's degree in marketing and finance from Penn State University and a Master's in development management from American University in Washington D.C. in 1997 Kenny founded and was the CEO of his own company MarketVision in New York City. Focusing on event marketing promotions targeted at the US university sector, he managed successful marketing campaigns for AT&T, Motorola, Citibank, Discover, Bank of America, and Fortune 500. In 2009 Kenny moved to Rome when his Mexican wife, who worked at the UN in New York, got a job at the Food and Agriculture Organization, headquartered in the Eternal City. Two years later he founded Eating Europe Tours, which has become the largest tour operator specializing in culinary tours and activities across Europe. From its first tours in Rome, guided by Kenny, “Eating Europe” has expanded to London, Florence, Amsterdam, and Prague. Kenny's LinkedIn profile tells us, “Eating Europe” “has agreements with the industry's leading distribution platforms including Expedia, Viator, and Tourico; and preferred partnerships with major tour operators such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Globus and Rick Steve's Tours. The company has received media coverage in the NYTimes, Chicago Tribune, Forbes, The Sydney Morning Herald, and the BBC, [to name a few]. Since 2011 “Eating Europe” has welcomed over 80,000 clients who've left over 5,000 positive reviews on TripAdvisor and other review online sites.” Its tours are recommended by Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and Fodors Guidebooks.I first heard of “Eating Europe” in 2014 from Wibke Carter, the company's PR Manager. She'd been the PR Manager of the German National Tourist Organization in New York City, which is how I knew her. Wibke invited me on one of the first tours in Florence. Recently along with 7 other clients I participated in the company's first-ever tour, the daytime “Taste of Testaccio”. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dylanconroy/support

Ethnographic research has long been cloaked in mystery around what fieldwork is really like for researchers, how they collect data, and how it is analyzed within the social sciences. Naked Fieldnotes: A Rough Guide to Ethnographic Writing (U Minnesota Press, 2024), a unique compendium of actual fieldnotes from contemporary ethnographic researchers from various modalities and research traditions, unpacks how this research works, its challenges and its possibilities. In this volume, Denielle Elliott and Matthew J. Wolf-Meyer pair fieldnotes based on observations, interviews, drawings, photographs, soundscapes, and other contemporary modes of recording research encounters with short, reflective essays, offering rich examples of how fieldnotes are composed and shaped by research experiences. These essays unlock the experience of conducting qualitative research in the social sciences, providing clear examples of the benefits and difficulties of ethnographic research and how it differs from other forms of writing such as reporting and travelogue. By granting access to these personal archives, Naked Fieldnotes unsettles taboos about the privacy of ethnographic writing and gives scholars a diverse, multimodal approach to conceptualizing and doing ethnographic fieldwork. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is a Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. Joseph Reaney is a freelance travel writer based in the UK and Czech Republic who's written for Lonely Planet, DK Eyewitness, Fodor's Travel, National Geographic, and Rough Guides. Vladimir Lenin famously observed, "There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen," and it's such a fitting statement for the long-gone era when rock & roll was young. Traveling musicians had long indulged in their share of excess, but when Jimmy Page's Led Zeppelin exploded onto the scene in 1969, they redefined what debauchery could be. At the same time, the first wave of Groupies, typified by Pamela Des Barres, was giving way to the so-called Baby Groupies, a younger cohort. Which is to say, a cohort that was far too young for the relationship Jimmy Page allegedly carried on with a fourteen year old girl. Stacie has the story, in all its trashy, day-glo, Marshall-stack tawdriness.Content note: This episode includes fairly graphic descriptions of disturbing behavior.Want early, ad-free episodes, limited series, Zoom hangouts, and more?
