In 2021, Intel Corporation partnered with legal service organizations across the country to provide pro bono assistance through expungement clinics in support of their commitment to racial justice. With unique volunteer opportunities available for all staff, Intel was able to bring in a much larger group of volunteers beyond attorneys. Their teams quickly saw an overwhelmingly positive impact within communities both socially and financially. Since 2022, Intel has worked with well over 150 clients across the U.S. who have been successful in getting their dismissal petitions granted. For our latest Signatory Showcase series podcast episode, we spoke with Eva Almirantearena, Intel's Vice President and Associate General Counsel in Antitrust and Commercial Litigation Group about Intel's incredible pro bono work expunging criminal records.
More pressure on Pharmac boss Sarah Fitt to resign. The Board Chair has met face to face with the Senior Leadership Team today over inappropriate emails sent about journalist Rachel Smalley. The chair instructed them to identify what can be done to prevent a situation like this from happening again. Two cancer patients have written an open letter asking for her resignation. Signatory Geoff Dawson says he felt like the mocking comments towards Smalley indicate a bigger problem. "It's the culture that creates that situation, then it's a spoilt culture. ADM and Skadden formed a pro bono partnership in 2019 to create a series of pro bono days of service, including clinics hosted in Skadden's office. Since then, they have provided pro bono legal assistance to an array of clients – and over the years the partnership has averaged in assisting 12 to 40 individuals during each clinic. ADM and Skadden have worked most recently with the National Immigrant Justice Center to assist immigrants who had obtained asylee or refugee status in filing their green card applications. Religious Discrimination In a pro bono case Milbank represented All Muslim Association of America (AMAA), a non-profit that provides low-cost burial and funeral services to Muslims in the DMV area, against a county in Virginia that created an ordinance that specifically made it impossible for AMAA to put a cemetery on their property. Milbank prevailed, resulting in the county rolling back that provision and awarding the client a large settlement in damages. On June 28, 2021, in a victory for racial justice, a settlement was announced on behalf of four residents of Baltimore's Harlem Park, a predominately Black neighborhood, who filed a federal court lawsuit against the Baltimore City Police Department (BPD) and former Police Commissioner Kevin Davis. The residents' lawsuit charged that their state and federal constitutional rights were violated during a six-day, multi-block lockdown of their neighborhood following the shooting death of Detective Sean Suiter. Grace Kwok has over 23 years' experiences in sustainable design and green building projects in Hong Kong, China and across Asia-Pacific, she has led the AEC group to set up a robust sustainability governance structure and is committed to promoting sustainability from the inside out. The Group committed to ambitious sustainability commitments, including Science-Based Target and Net Zero Carbon Operation by 2030, and is a Signatory for the Business for Ambition for 1.5°C campaign organized by SBTi and UNGC. Also, took the lead to uphold sustainability standards by conducting climate risk assessments using TCFD framework and adopting GRI Standards in its annual ESG reports. AEC Group has obtained many awards for its sustainability governance and ESG initiatives, including Honorable Mention Award in the Hong Kong Corporate Governance Excellence Awards 2020 and Grand Award in the Hong Kong Sustainability Award 2020/21. In support of World GBC's net-zero built environment agenda, AEC Group has joined the ranks of WorldGBC Asia Pacific Net Zero Collaborators in 2021. Driven by a vision to shape a sustainable future, Grace is dedicated to work with the building and construction sector to build climate resilience and accelerate net-zero transition. She had played a key role in encouraging the early adoption of green building rating systems and worked on the earliest batch of HK-BEAM and LEED projects in Hong Kong. Grace had also been facilitating the localization of international green building and sustainable infrastructure rating tools, including BREEAM and CEEQUAL. In recent years, she created a stronger momentum for the green building movement with ESG and green finance as drivers and leveraged her expertise in corporate sustainability to promote sustainable real estate from fund and developers' group to project levels. With an environmental engineering background, Grace is a keen advocate of regenerative sustainability for the built environment. When we're working on a green building project, you can expect it (the building) will stay there for a long time. You need to consider the whole life cycle of the building. No Contract Compelling Arbitration Between Insurer and Insured No Arbitration In Alex Weingarten v. Certain Underwriters At Lloyd's, London Subscribing To Policy Number IML-0114N0-190029, B321148, California Court of Appeals, Second District, Fourth Division (March 23, 2023) Certain Underwriters at Lloyd's, London (Lloyd's Underwriters) appealed from the trial court's order denying their motion to compel arbitration of plaintiff Alex Weingarten's complaint for breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent misrepresentation. FACTUAL BACKGROUND The Underlying Malpractice Action In 2013, Adam Levin, Tristen Lazareff, and Criterion Capital Partners, LLC, retained Weingarten Brown LLP to defend them in the case entitled MXB Holdings LP, et al. v. Adam Levin, et al (the MXB action). The retainer agreement (the Levin/Weingarten retainer agreement) contained an arbitration provision. Adam Levin and Criterion Capital Partners, LLC, filed an action in the Los Angeles Superior Court for legal malpractice and breach of fiduciary duty against Weingarten et al (the malpractice action). The complaint alleged Weingarten negligently represented the defendants in the MXB action. The parties later stipulated to arbitration before JAMS based on the arbitration provision in the retainer agreement. Weingarten notified Lloyd's Underwriters about the malpractice action, and Lloyd's Underwriters accepted the defense of the Weingarten defendants. Robins Kaplan Pro Bono and Indigenous People In a pro bono case that has drawn national attention, Robins Kaplan sued the federal government on behalf of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe after the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services closed the only emergency room on the Rosebud Reservation. On behalf of the Tribe, Robins Kaplan attorneys argued that the closure of the emergency room violated the federal government's treaty duty to provide the Tribe with adequate health care services. We spoke with Robins Kaplan Partner, Tim Billion, for this special edition of the Pro Bono Happy Hour Podcast. This one, aged in Limosin French Oak is wonderfully light and refreshing with just a hint of spice and white fruits, that I find tantalizing and utterly satisfying. Signatory is quietly becoming a source of some great Whisky and while I will speak with them next week in my first ever interview, tonight as a warmup I jumped into two 5 year Bunnahabhain Staoisha Signatory picks. One, Cask #10756 direct from Signatory, in the beautiful Decanter bottle, and the other, Cask #10757 from Binny's in the standard 750 bottle. I will tell you these tasted better then their age would suggest, and were also extremely difficult to decipher. On the nose they both had light fruity, almost citrus noses with little peat. Then their palates differed, with the edge going to Signatory. Their finishes were warm and peaty with a slight edge going to Signatory again. Fascinating.
