As we close out Black History Month, we wanted to shine a spotlight on one sector of the population we're truly in awe of: Black female business owners. Although Black women make up less than 10% of the U.S. population, they've emerged as the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the country.  Today we're joined by Tiffany Dufu, president of the Tory Burch Foundation and author of Drop the Ball, to discuss what's fueling the rise of Black women-owned businesses, the biggest hurdles they face, and how we can all use our purchasing power to support them. Looking for more financial confidence?

I am super delighted to have Tiffany Dufu, the President at The Tory Burch Foundation, on for this episode of #29DaysofMagic! 2025! She talks about being a Girl Scout selling cookies, and her first real job which she absolutely hated, but she really learned how helpful it was to learn that people can say no to you over and over but the world doesn't fall apart. She talks about her incredible journey where so many amazing incredible women saw her and invited her into the room and how impactful that has been for her career and starting her own companies. Tiffany talks about the 4 levers of economic opportunity and how the fourth is entrepreneurship and how important that is to help people. She talks about how important the work she is doing at the Tory Burch Foundation is especially in this current climate. She points out that instead of asking the question, "How am I to solve this challenge?" instead she asks "Who is going to help me solve it?" and how important it is especially for women entrepreneurs to remember that this is not a solo journey."We build trust by asking for help, not for offering it," - Tiffany DufuCheck out the Lavender oil She mentioned here: https://www.loccitane.com/en-us/lavender-essential-oil-15HE005L14.html?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAwtu9BhC8ARIsAI9JHakYQOFtck3W7LQ-KpAtBk8W3TC_D6NENUZoNCPYBYlUEDOnOqWzUsIaAnvVEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.dsL'OCCITANE Lavender OilConnect with her here:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tiffanydufuInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tdufu/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoSIgKTfYRMmBreoNv_8-aALinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffanydufu/Personal Website: https://www.tiffanydufu.com/Her Company Website: https://www.weareluminary.com/luminary-crus

The Legalpreneurs Sandbox

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 21, 2022 34:48

In 2013, after many years working in large law firms and co-founding one of the first legal metrics start-ups, Caren Ulrich Stacy took time out to reflect on how she could bring together what she had done with what she had experienced to solve a problem that keeps knocking at her door – how do women who had left legal practice for a variety of different reasons, find their way back to it? The answer was the OnRamp Fellowship, the first returnship program for law firms that later extended to legal departments. It grew into the Diversity Lab, an incubator for innovative ways of boosting diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The Lab ran a series of Women in Law Hackathons from 2016 – The Mansfield Rule was an idea from the first Hackathon that grew wings in US, Canadian and UK law firms and legal departments too. Named after the first woman lawyer in the US, Arabella Mansfield, its focus is on boosting and sustaining diversity in leadership and the pipeline to leadership. The Lab also subsequently established the Move the Needle initiative, a wonderful collaborative experiment between the Lab and four founding law firms, resourced over 5 years, the outcome being to produce empirical data (which will include a Report) about diversity and inclusion in hiring, retention and advancement. The Report, when released, promises to provide a tried and tested blueprint for advancing diversity and inclusion in the legal industry. What Caren has accomplished with the Diversity Lab and these two amazing initiatives (of many) we discussed, is remarkable and outstanding! What's also critically important is that the work and outcomes are supported, every step of the way, with data, data analysis, and metrics – they provide an empirical and quantifiable foundation that differentiates these initiatives from others and, tells a story that is both deeply personal but also objectively verifiable!  Caren is the Founder & CEO of the Diversity Lab; the Founder of its On Ramp Fellowship; was recently appointed as the Lead Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility Advisor to the USPTO; holds roles with the UN Women initiative, and holds Fellowships at The College of Law Practice Management and the Tory Burch Foundation. If you would prefer to watch rather than listen to this podcast, you'll find the video here. About the Future 50 Series In the Future 50 Series we're chatting with legalpreneurs who, through their ideas and actions, are challenging and transforming legal BAU all around the world. “Meeting the needs of the consumer and meeting the needs of the environment sometimes is tricky.” – Kate Flynn This week on the Gooder Podcast, I had the pleasure of talking with Kate Flynn, the founder and CEO of Sun & Swell Foods. We discuss the history of Sun & Swell Foods – one of the first food and snacking brands leading the way in the use of composable packaging. We also learn about the evolvement of sustainable packaging and Kate’s leadership in driving this hot topic. Along the way, we learn the amazing journey of a passionate leader in creating a more inclusive, accessible and affordable real food products for all consumers. Fast becoming the leader and go to source for  In this episode we learn: About the history and inspiration of Sun & Swell Foods. Sun & Swell’s brand transition from a traditional CPG brand to a direct-to-consumer brand. Kate’s journey from being a consultant in a firm focused on retail and consumer products to having a CPG brand herself. The evolvement of compostable packaging technology.  How to create accessibility, affordability for mainstream consumers in the healthy food category. The advice she finds herself consistently giving entrepreneurs who have family members or loved ones as their business partners. About Kate Flynn: In 2017, Kate Flynn, and her husband and co-founder, Bryan Flynn, launched their natural food company, Sun & Swell Foods. Their mission is to make healthy and sustainable eating more accessible with their collection of sustainably-packaged, organic, plant-based pantry staples and snacks. Sun & Swell is the first food company in the US to offer a wide array of healthy foods in compostable, plastic-free packaging. With a background in business economics and nutrition and a penchant for creating her own healthy snacks, Kate brings a unique set of skills to Sun & Swell Foods.  Early on, she pursued her academic career at UC Santa Barbara and graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School. Kate’s professional career included a consulting role as a brand strategist in the retail and consumer products space, where she focused on brand and growth strategy for various leading CPG brands. After spending nearly ten years in the consumer products world, she was looking to do something more purposeful and fulfilling that would positively impact the world. In 2017, Kate took a leap of faith to follow her real passion for health and wellness to start Sun & Swell Foods with Bryan.  Leading up to this, Kate had switched to a more natural lifestyle, including eating only ‘whole foods.’ She realized that eating a whole food diet made her feel better, both physically and mentally, and realized that she wanted to keep eating this way. However, when she looked around for packaged foods to accommodate this new way of eating, she realized there were no options available. Most packaged foods are made with artificial ingredients and loaded with added sugars, preservatives, and flavors. This realization sparked an idea, and Sun & Swell Foods was born. When sourcing ingredients, Kate and her team buy organic ingredients as close to the source and farm as possible, seeking out small family farms. Sun & Swell is a Certified B-Corporation and a member of 1% for the Planet, donating 1% of the revenue to environmental non-profits addressing two areas the founders are deeply passionate about: regenerative farming and ocean health.  When not running the company’s day-to-day, Kate loves frequenting Santa Barbara’s local farmers’ markets and beaches and spending time with her husband and newborn daughter, Leila. Kate is also a Certified Culinary Nutrition Expert. Every parent knows one of the scariest times is when your child gets sick. But when a child is hospitalized or diagnosed with a rare or serious illness, it affects everything. It can be really scary for children who are struggling. My guest today is taking her personal pain with her own child’s sickness and bringing joy to sick kids all around the country. Shalini Samtani is the founder of Open The Joy and the Spread the Joy Foundation. 4:29 – Shalini 101 Spread the Joy Foundation delivers activity kits to children at their hospital bedside. She started making the kits on her kitchen table with her mother three years ago. Last year, she sent 5,000 to 6,000 kits to more than 100 hospitals across the country. Open the Joy is a for-profit company that makes toys focused on well-being and emotional intelligence in kids, such as a love and forgiveness box, anger management box, etc. Shalini got the idea after being in a hospital room with her daughter and trying to Google ways to entertain her and keep her positive. 6:42 – Difficult news Shalini’s daughter was diagnosed with a rare disease that caused her body to react differently to sickness. 10:15 – Finding her purpose Shalini never imagined she would design kids’ toys. She describes the experience as finding her purpose. Giving back to sick kids is what drives her. 16:38 – How to buy the toys Toys are sold on Open the Joy’s website and Amazon. They have launched a new emotional intelligence line of toys, including a love and forgiveness box, anger management box and a kindness mission box. 19:24 – “You heal by healing others.” “While the world is focusing on making kids smarter, our focus is to make them kinder,” said Shalini 25:35 – Spreading like wildfire Shalini has been amazed at how quickly her business grew. She says it has spread like wildfire. 27:22 – How her kids view the hospital now Her daughter doesn't have any memories of being in the hospital. She now associates the hospital as a place where you get a joy box, because of Shalini’s business. Her daughter and son think the hospital is a place where you do nice things for people. 38:05 – Get to know Shalini What brings her joy? Snuggles What song she loves to sing? The American designer discusses the power of many businesses to be advocates for change.   The last few years have offered Tory Burch, founder of her namesake womenswear label, time to focus less on business and more on design, particularly since her husband Pierre-Yves Roussel took on the role of chief executive in 2018. Now, the pandemic is giving her even more time to focus on perfecting product, a rare silver lining of an otherwise challenging situation.   In the latest episode of the BoF Podcast, BoF editor-at-large Tim Blanks speaks with Burch about her activist-focused approach to business and how the last 10 months have shaped her fashion label.   Restriction is a crucial component of creativity. To Burch, the travel restrictions and social distancing measures have opened new avenues of creativity, fostering agility and resourcefulness. “One thing that’s happened because of lockdown is it makes you stand still,” said Burch. “To be able to be in one place has been really transformative on many levels.” Burch emphasises that what constitutes luxury needs to be reconsidered. “I really believe luxury isn’t about a price point, and I think that’s relatable particularly today,” she said. “How do you design beautiful things that are timeless and that will last? That’s what I’ve been thinking about,” she said, adding that having time to spend is the ultimate luxury. Through the Tory Burch Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to advancing women’s empowerment, Burch is finding new avenues through which to support women and help them weather the coronavirus crisis. “Its horrendous for women right now,” said Burch. “They are taking care of children at a much higher rate than men. We have had to help many women figure out how to take out PPP loans… We had to pivot to really be a resource for women.”   Related Articles:Tory Burch Names Pierre-Yves Roussel CEOIndependent Women Brought Hope to Fashion’s Virtual SpringVisual Metaphors at Tory Burch     Watch and listen to more #BoFLIVE conversations here.   To contact The Business of Fashion with comments, questions or speaker ideas please email podcast@businessoffashion.com.   Sign up for BoF’s Daily Digest newsletter. Based on her own experience growing up and running her grandmother's bakery in Sierra Leone, Desiree honed an interest and passion for entrepreneurship early on and talked about the disparity of investment between East and West Africa regionally and how East African countries have been able to galvanize investment and finance due to the relative political stability and security in the region. Desiree discussed working with TEF and its focus on using entrepreneurship as a building block to international development and creating opportunity with a focus on startups but also discussed the double-edged sword of microfinance and the sector's lack of emphasis on planned growth. Desiree shared the challenges of developing the building blocks to investor confidence which include financials, taxes, business governance, and transparency within the over 40 million SMEs in Nigeria and stressed the need for SMEs to develop clarity around purpose and how finance would be used to grow and scale. Understanding investor focus and vetting SMEs is crucial in finding alignment. With only 3% of women entrepreneurs getting investment capital, understanding why there is a lack of growth capital, and the opportunities and barriers of debt financing, grants, and other forms of "patient capital" is vital research that all entrepreneurs should master.Desiree reflected on Covid-related necessity being the mother of entrepreneurial invention and that many people are looking to start a business at this time and address needs and previous blind spots in a post-Covid-19 world such as comprehensive child care provision as an untapped opportunity. With 90% of enterprises failing in the first 3 years and only 2% of women-led businesses in the US generating a million dollars in revenue, long term success has much more to with creating need-driven value-added products and services with a large funnel of customers. As businesses try to adapt, Desirees' adage of NBC - Nobody's Coming is wise advice to make entrepreneurs focus on sales and profit rather than loans and emergency stimulus assistance. Desiree has coached women on leading with data and numbers rather than personal anecdotes but also being clear on knowing the source of impact investment funds and gauging real interest in your business will help save precious time and manage expectations. Navigating her way as a "prospector expert" has taken her from the Robin Hood Foundation in New York to spearheading philanthropy on the continent, specifically Nigeria with the Tony Elumelu Foundation where philanthropic intent drives progress without any of the tax incentives commonly associated with foundations in the West, and then recently creating a legacy program at the Tory Burch Foundation working on cross-generational and sectoral female entrepreneurship and leadership development. Nada Jones is the CEO and Founder of LIBERTY. She has spent the last 17 years as a consultant and advocate for entrepreneurial women. Through the LIBERTY platform, she is committed to empowering all women, not just millennials who have embraced the entrepreneurial life with ease. “Considering what’s possible and pursuing your calling doesn’t end at 35, in fact, that’s when the need for flexibility and purpose are heightened.”   Nada began her entrepreneurial career in 2000 with the launch of nedandshell.com, a retail and wholesale co-op for emerging female designers in NYC. In 2008, she co-authored a how-to book, “Sixteen Weeks to Your Dream Business: A Weekly Planner for Entrepreneurial Women” which spent time on Amazon’s best-selling business book list.   Speaking and seminar opportunities accompanied a book tour and Nada realized that there was much to be done to support women in this space. In 2011, Nada launched ltdLIVE, a conference that brought together speakers, experts, service providers and brands that were all in the business of empowering and helping small businesses.   Armed with a conviction that all women must be empowered to write their own narrative,  Nada founded the Dream for a Dream initiative. Through this program, she has partnered with game-changing social organizations, such as the Tory Burch Foundation, JoinFITE and Dermalogica, Charity Water and Miss Representation. Nada also co-founded Project Raiz, a social impact trip connecting US designers with artisans in Swaziland and Mozam-bique to expand the global marketplace.   Nada is also the principal of Nada Jones Consulting. Her work supporting female small business owners has given her a unique insight into their successes and challenges. "Faith is like a muscle. It's similar to going out for a run- if you don't do it normally run, you're going to sweat and it's not going to be comfortable. If you step into having faith when you don't know what the end is going to be, then that's something you can build every single day and you can rely on it." - Bridgette Mayer   This show is for everyone who believes that their past determines their future. How did a young girl who came through the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DYFS) system and foster care end up in the art world with a multi-million dollar gallery and consulting business? Through the kindness of strangers, fierce determination, and a survivor’s sheer will, Bridgette Mayer’s is a success story for the ages. In her inspirational memoir of gross neglect, violent abuse, and ultimately redemption, she shares her journey from the projects of Jersey City to eventually becoming one of Philadelphia’s most celebrated gallery owners. By following her heart and passion for art, Mayer’s interests evolved from a means of escape into her salvation and her security. She used her inherent self-assurance, natural curiosity, and scrapper work ethic to overcome the damage inflicted on her as a child and create a harmonious, rewarding, and charitable life — for herself and the artists she represents.   Rising Above Your Circumstances   "Anger is a much more proactive emotion than despair. I've used anger and fear to propel me forward. I've learned how to use both pretty well at this point. I've used such experiences to make me a better." - Bridgette Mayer   Bridgette's memoir, The Art Cure : A Memoir of Abuse & Fortune (published by Little Lion press in September 2016), is for anyone who aspires to a career in the arts and who has been told it’s too difficult or impractical to pursue. With bravery and tenacity, anyone can achieve the life of their dreams, no matter how out of reach it may seem. Mayer offers readers a bridge to color and a lifeline of hope for the future. After suffering an abusive childhood that landed her in foster care homes and on the streets, starving and beat up, Bridgette was adopted by a wonderful family at the age of nine and began her life transformation. Her early and challenging experiences gave her a tenacity of spirit, unbreakable creativity and a desire to make her mark in the art world. Now a successful art dealer, curator, art adviser, author and entrepreneur, Bridgette Mayer has spent decades cultivating her passion for art, artists, the clients she advises and finding her way to the top of the art world.   Creating The New Story   "I had a moment of frustration and I said to myself, 'The next 10 things that I'm asked to do, I'm just going to say 'yes' to them and figure it out.' The next day, I got a call from CNN to be on Anderson Cooper's show, 'On the Rise.' " - Bridgette Mayer   Bridgette's background of struggle and overcoming obstacles lead to her current success and spurred her to write, “The Art Cure: A Memoir of Abuse & Fortune.” Her passion for artists and managing them to the highest level as well as working with top collectors from around the world has guided her business the past seventeen years. Bridgette's expertise encompasses a whole approach to art collecting, creating authentic environments both public and private with art. Her mission is to continue to inspire those around her and especially artists, women and entrepreneurs to live the life they dream even in the face of insurmountable obstacles.   Bridgette Mayer Gallery   The Bridgette Mayer Gallery has been featured on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 as a small business “On The Rise” and was recognized as a recommended Philadelphia arts destination in The New York Times Magazine. In 2013, Mayer was named one of the top 500 Galleries in the world by Boulin ArtInfo, and was also featured in the Tory Burch Foundation’s “Women To Watch” series. Mayer has been a featured speaker on many panels in the Philadelphia area and has guest lectured at a number of Universities, where her talks focus on how emerging artists can promote their work and sustain a career in the arts.  A graduate of Bucknell University, Mayer was an active member of the University’s Arts Board for several years.  She is currently a board member of the Arts & Business Council, Philadelphia, PA & Vox Vopuli, Philadelphia, PA.   About Bridgette Mayer   For the past sixteen years Bridgette Mayer has been running a top contemporary art gallery in Philadelphia and helping her clients and the artists she serves improve the quality of their life through art. Growing up in an abusive home in the projects of Jersey City and filtered through the foster care system until she was nine years old, Bridgette was finally adopted by a wonderful family. If you had seen the conditions she grew up in, you would not even believe it that someone could come from there and get to where she is now. She had to learn how to read and get started living a life that was no longer centered around the drugs, alcohol and physical abuse. Over the years she has come through many challenges and worked for her dream of being a top arts professional in the gallery industry. For her entire life, Bridgette had big dreams, and has dreamed the dreams that others said would not be possible. Bridgette is living proof and this is not a Hollywood movie. She literally came from the other side of the tracks and built a life of abundance for herself. From Bridgette: "That is why I wanted to write a book to share my story with you. Part memoir and part how I got my start in the art world, this book is for anybody who might need inspiration or might want to know how somebody like myself who came from nothing, was able to build a multi-million dollar business in the art world.
