The force of hope is a potent one that has the power to brighten our lives and bring happiness. No matter how isolated or stuck in your business or life you may feel, it is so very important to hold on to hope and allow it to influence the decisions you make. It is a key ingredient in helping you to live the life you want to live, and in this week's episode, McKay explores the propensity to hope, demonstrating just how powerful it can be even in the bleakest of situations. Trapped in a sinking cave for two weeks, 12 young boys and their coach held onto the hope that they would survive without food and sufficient air. This moving story acts as our opener in this episode as McKay correlates it to situations we face in life. The propensity to hope is having a behavior or pattern that results in a habit of holding on to hope. Today, Mckay discusses what hope encompasses and how it can be defined, and also delves into how to find hope when all seems lost. The episode comes to a close with McKay encouraging us to always choose hope because when we let hope make our decisions, we discover a better and happier way of living. The Finer Details of This Episode: - Having hope in a bleak situation- the story of the Wild Boars of Thailand- Understanding what propensity means- Hope in Pandora's box- What does hope encompass?- How to stop thinking about the ‘nevers'- How do you find hope when you are down and discouraged?- A story of hope told in a painting- The choice of hope- The benefits of holding on to hope- Ways to acquire the trait of being hopeful- Hope as a force multiplier Quotes: “We all get buried, stuck from time to time, whether by our own poor judgment or by factors completely beyond our control.” “We had each other and we had hope.” “We all face storms and darkness and are lost in isolation from time to time. Sometimes we lose, fail, regress and it's in those times that we're unsure whether we can, in fact, do what we're being asked to do.” “Hope is a passion for what is possible. When things around you say give up, hope always remains.” “The definition of propensity is an established pattern, behavior, or an attraction to a thing.” “Are you a person of hope? What's your propensity?” “When we have hope, we have more than we think.” “Don't give in to your depravations, live up to your expectations.” “You weren't placed here to peek into your future, but to open the door wide and walk through with confidence.” “Hope is the belief that circumstances will get better. It's not a wish for things to get better, it's the actual belief, the knowledge that it will happen.” “Remember, you can't make someone else's choices, and you shouldn't let them make yours.” Show Links: Open Your Eyes with McKay Christensen

“I wasn't going to miss the podcast just because I was slightly paralysed” - It's one of the better quotes we've had on the show! But it neatly sums up the unassuming yet unflappable nature of Dr Harry, who unless you were on a 12 month silent retreat in 2018, you'd know was the cave diving anaesthetist who helped in the against all odds rescue of the Wild Boars soccer team trapped in a flooded Thai cave. Dr Harry is in a unique position to talk about the art of risk taking, and it's something he's taken a keen interest in since that phenomenal rescue, especially how it relates to kids. In this episode Dr Harry very kindly shares with Hame his thoughts on teaching kids about risk mitigating rather than risk taking, building resilience and overcoming fear, on the generational changes in parenting that he's noticed and reflecting on what he might have done differently as a dad… it's a super wide ranging chat - one that we were so, so lucky to have… not least because a few days out from us recording with Dr Harry, he'd been diving down a very very deep cave and had a little run in with the diver's constant nemesis, the bends. Thankfully it all worked out OK! But I think you'll agree, it was some Gold Standard Guest Commitment to turn up to our humble podcast, for sure! --- Dr Richard Harris SC OAM & 2019 joint Australian of the Year (nice title, right?!) has got lots of great stuff going on... His 3 series podcast REAL RISK is awesome. It's got some amazing chats with people who manage some pretty massive risks (the saturation diving episode is so good) He's written a couple of great KIDS BOOKS on different ways to be brave and kind, called Alfie the Brave & Alfie the Kind. The book he and Craig Challen wrote AGAINST ALL ODDS about the cave rescue is also amazing AND very excitingly he's working on a feature documentary called Deeper, directed by Jennifer Peedom, produced by Stranger than Fiction and distributed by Madman. The film follows the story of Harry and his mates attempting a dangerous and unprecedented dive in a remote (and very deep!) NZ cave - it's out next year and we can't wait! — Now, if you DON'T want to take a risk with your next hire car (and who would), make sure you use our friends at HERTZ. In this riveting episode, I sit down with Stephanie Henrie, a former colleague turned successful real estate investor. Stephanie shares her incredible journey from initial fear and hesitation to diving headfirst into the world of real estate. We discuss the pivotal moments that led her to take action, despite the fear that once held her back. Stephanie recounts a particularly wild story where she helped a client who had fallen into a medically induced coma after colliding with a wild boar on a scooter. Despite the chaos, Stephanie and her husband managed to close the deal, saving the client from foreclosure and netting him $70,000. Through persistence, empathy, and a genuine desire to help others, Stephanie has successfully completed multiple real estate deals, earning her a significant profit while making a positive impact on the lives of those she works with. Key Takeaways: Overcoming Fear: Stephanie emphasizes the importance of pushing through fear and taking action, even when you don't have all the answers. Waiting for the "perfect moment" often leads to missed opportunities. The Power of Service: Going above and beyond for clients, especially in difficult situations, not only builds trust but can also lead to successful deals that benefit both parties. Learning from Mistakes: Stephanie highlights how every mistake made along the way is a learning opportunity, and growth often comes from these challenging experiences. Networking is Key: Building a strong network of buyers and other investors is crucial in the real estate business. Stephanie's early focus on networking helped her quickly find buyers for her deals. In the second part of David Oakes' interview with Professors Fiona Mathews and Tim Kendall, the mammal-enthused trio head into the Forest of Dean in search of Wild Boar!Fiona Mathews is a professor of Environmental Biology at the University of Sussex and the founding Chair of Mammal Conservation Europe; Tim Kendall is a professor of English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Exeter, and; their dog Charlie Brown is an especially trained labrador with the talent for locating the bodies of bats that have been killed or injured by wind turbines, all in the name of conservation science. Together, they wrote the Wainwright award-nominated book “Black Ops & Beaver Bombing: Adventures with Britain's Wild Mammals”. In this two part interview, hear how Fiona's construction of the Red List for British Mammals informs our Government and has lead to cutting edge mammal conservation projects. They discuss the British Coypu population that caused concern in the 1980s, the effectiveness of the mysterious “Beaver Bombers” secretly releasing animals across Europe, and the tale of the lone Scottish Pine Marten that ended up in Georgia, USA (a fate subjectively worse than the Beech Marten who got stuck in the Large Hadron Collider!) The trio of Fiona, Tim and David (alas without Charlie Brown) then head into the Forest of Dean to locate the most contentious of Britain's mammals – the Wild Boar!
