This episode of our Tales of the Magic Skagit podcast series marks an important first: it's the first time our Skagit Valley Youth History Project intern, Morgan (Go Bulldogs!) has been involved in an interview. I think you'll agree that she added some additional zest to the conversation. Which is saying something when your interview subject is none other than Señor Ramon Rivera, the man whose business card reads: "Mariachi Educator, Latino Leadership, Ptrumpet Artist, 2023 Washington State Teacher of the Year." As you might imagine, Morgan and I embarked on a lively discussion with Ramon about the origins and traditions of mariachi music, which took us into Mexican history and culture as well. Along the way we also discussed the challenges and rewards of teenagers and high school, and the importance of music in our lives at any age and circumstance. Oh...and one other thing. At the end of the Interview Ramon did "the big reveal" on what his Latino Leadership group has in mind for this year's Cinco de Mayo. You just might suffer from a case of the "vapors" -- but just remember that you heard it first on Tales of the Magic Skagit, y'all!

The Center for Latino Leadership. ¡Los invito a despertar el poder cívico que llevamos dentro para el 2024 en esta poderosa conversación! . . . When it comes to your career progression, are you actively “leaning in” to create impact and making a difference or are you passively leaning back in your seat, letting opportunities slip passed you? You may be familiar with Sheryl Sandberg's book, “Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead”, where she shares her perspective on what women need to do to move up in the business world, which is: to press ahead, to project confidence, to "sit at the table" and physically lean in to make herself heard. After visiting the Lean In Organization's website, she decided to click and create a “Circle”. And that is the beginning of Lean in Latinas and Anna's journey of paying it forward. August 4, 2021 — With the Latino population in Mendocino County growing, local Latino leaders are strategizing how to bring business owners in to fund scholarships and initiatives. And with the delta variant surging, Ukiah mayor Juan Orozco says he thinks he's cracked the code when it comes to the best way to get public health messages out to the Spanish-speaking community: short, informative videos on social media. Orozco is a member of UVA, Ukiah Vecinos en Accion, a local group that's been working for ways to advance the interests of the Latino community. The group is now setting its sights on getting business owners to step into playing a social role beyond offering employment. For the younger generations coming up, he envisions leaders in government, healthcare, education, and business. “You know, I haven't met a Latino CEO in our county yet,” he reflected. “And we really need to start figuring out how to get that going.”

Lean In Latinas began with Anna in an organic moment. She started the group in her home, and it quickly grew too large - from a few women to over 800 four years later. As a single mom who was raised in a non-traditional household, Anna realized early on that life placed her in a room with leaders. She pursued her education, and along with her grit and history, grew into the woman she is today. Follow the conversation and discover how Anna learned to have the confidence to lead first, insisting on equality at home and in life._______________________________________________________________________________Anna Dapelo-Garcia is Founder and President of Lean In Latinas. Latino Politics and News with Tony Diaz aired Tues, June 2, 2020, 2 pm on 90.1 FM KPFT, Houston. Livestream at www.KPFT.org. Join us every Tuesday. Today, we are providing a Latino perspective on the new book "Prophetic City: Houston on the Cusp of a Changing America" by Stephen Klineberg. Almost 40 years of research surveying Houstonians form the basis for the book. We will talk to Dr. Stephen Klineberg, who, as I am, is an alum of the American Leadership Forum. I'll also talk to other ALF alumni to provide an introduction to the book, which I believe lays the groundwork for creating structural change in Houston. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce CEO Dr. Laura Murillo will provide an analysis of Latino Leadership, and Texas Senator Carol Alvarado will provide us insights into Houston and Texas's political structure, which have shaped the lives of our community. In news, we are recording remotely and sometime weeks ahead of air dates. This makes it complicated to address breaking news; however, we must address the slaying of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That is an on-going and rapidly changing situation, so facts and analysis will vary day to today; however, today's show addresses structural issues. In "Prophetic City" John Guess, Chief Executive Officer Emeritus of the Houston Museum of African American Culture, is quoted as saying that the survey does not convey the level of racism that exists in Houston. Sudden acts, such as the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis streets by those assigned to serve and protect us, are examples of racial bias coming to a dangerous boiling point. We must address the layers that lead to that. “Prophetic City” quantifies inequities that limit the potential of black and brown communities to thrive. Social injustice is hard to quantify, easy to hide, and profoundly shapes our communities' confidence, tranquility, and peace of mind. Those factors are also vital to thrive. George Floyd grew up in Houston. Houston police have been involved in six lethal shooting in just over a month. Most of those killed were Black or Brown. Their names are: Nicolas Chavez, Chris Aguirre, Adrian Medearis, Rayshard Scales, Randy Lewis, Joe Castillanos. These acts must be thoroughly examined, transparently. This issue erupts then gets swept under the rug. However, if we do not address many of the social inequities quantified in Prophetic City, Houston will not be able to thrive. As the book says, Houston's fate relies on the fate of young Blacks and Latinos. As we discuss 40 years of research about Houston, it is clear the time for change is now. Latino Politics and News is intended to address those issues over the long haul. We hope our discussion today on "Prophetic City" will pave the way for more profound discussions about our communities and with our communities. We must be humanized, and imagined and treated as intellectual capable fo great thoughts and great deeds. We are in pledge drive. There are no regular shows about our art, culture, and politics on commercial television or radio. KPFT hosts a monopoly on community cultural capital. We answer to our community. I'm happy to join you every Tuesday from 2 pm to 3 pm for Latino Politics and News on 90.1 FM KPFT. That's followed by Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say at 6 pm. Juana has been a woman of action – where she’s seen a need – she’s found a solution and gone out and started it. Juan is an inductee to the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame, and I’m always so honored to get to interview the inductees. Juana emigrated to the U.S. from Nicaragua on a banana boat. She’s led such an interesting life… and yes, we do talk about immigration in America today. The youngest daughter in a family of eight, she was the first to go to college. She's quick to say that our grandmothers before us forged the west... and it's time for us to step into our role as warriors, and shape the future for our children. "Leadership is about legacy." As a woman in her 70s, Juana's just getting started, and she encourages all of us, "Ladies lets step it up, lets finish the job!" Juana was the first Latina faculty for the Center for Creative Leadership and taught in The Leadership Development Program – the most highly utilized executive training program in the world. She has designed, developed, and implemented leadership programs for national nonprofits, corporations, and government agencies across the country. President Trump has incited open racism, xenophobia, and hostility to Latinos and immigrants. From his attacks on Judge Curiel during his campaign to his claims that 3-5 million noncitizens voted to his pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, to his recent vow to end DACA, there has never been any question that this is an era where Latinos face acute threats in many different arenas. The attacks seem to keep coming, and the Trump administration appears undeterred by Latinos’ growing percentage of the country’s population.
