Between ages 22 and 25, he experimented with over 20 side hustles, scaling his income from $96K to more than $400K annually. The key? He kept expenses locked at just $24K per year—creating a massive gap of $625K over three years. The Psychology of Financial Independence 00:18:00 Brad and Cody explore why some people achieve FI while others with similar incomes stay stuck. The answer isn't math—it's psychology and awareness. Cody attributes his success to having a clear destination. When you know exactly where you're going and why it matters, spending $100 on something that doesn't serve that destination becomes harder than saying no. The infamous "second marshmallow" experiment demonstrates this: delaying gratification becomes easier when you're aware of what you're trading for. As Cody puts it: "Earn more, spend less, invest the gap. Very simple. That is financial independence in a nutshell." This represents the spectrum of passive income: not zero effort, but minimal effort relative to the returns. The secret? Working in seasons rather than constant hustle mode. Some months require more attention (tenant turnover, maintenance issues), while others are nearly hands-off. Cody's businesses also follow this pattern—periods of intense development followed by relative autopilot. Brad reinforces this with math: "Every $100 a month you can cut out of your budget is $30,000 less you need in your FI number." Over 20 years, that $100/month compounds to $60K invested. That's a $90K swing from a single optimization. Designing the Perfect Tuesday 00:42:00 Forget exotic vacations—FI is about winning on a random Tuesday. Cody and Lauren's ideal weekday reveals what financial independence actually looks like: Morning: Wake naturally, coffee together, workout (him: gym; her: Pilates), shower, work on creative projects they enjoy Midday: Lunch together, afternoon walk in their neighborhood, separate time for individual pursuits Evening: Dinner together, reading, quality time before bed Nothing dramatic. No yachts. Just complete autonomy over every hour of a normal day. They maintain this through monthly alignment meetings—typically at a restaurant over a nice meal—covering: Money and real estate Health and fitness Travel plans Relationships (with a safe space to address concerns) Friends and family A rotating category Goals for the next month They also record an annual video reviewing the year, creating a time capsule of their journey. We remember one of the most sought-after directors in television, James Burrows. He died June 19 at age 85. Burrows worked on many classic sitcoms including ‘Taxi,' ‘Frasier,' ‘Friends,' ‘Will and Grace' and ‘Cheers.' He was known for his comedic instincts, his visual style, and for insisting the comedy be believable. Burrows spoke with Terry Gross in 2006. The show follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom from The Big Bang Theory in a new series where he attempts - and apparently fails - to save the universe, staying true to his unlucky nature. The spinoff consists of ten episodes, streaming every Thursday at 9 PM. It debuts July 23 on HBO Max . So this got us thinking about some cool spinoffs with quirky characters from other shows we've watched over the years. Here are three clever spinoff concepts in the same spirit as Stuart Fails to Save the Universe: Jack Bauer from 24 Title: 24/7 After finally retiring from CTU, Jack Bauer is forced to take a mundane job as head of security at a mid-sized suburban office park in Los Angeles — mostly to keep his health insurance. Still operating with the intensity, paranoia, and zero-tolerance policy that once saved the world multiple times, Jack now applies his elite counter-terrorism skills to everyday annoyances: package thieves, passive-aggressive HR Manager, broken printers, and the HOA president who keeps violating noise ordinances. Every episode plays out in real time (a 24-minute comedy format), following Jack as he tackles a new "crisis" — whether it's a missing office dog, a suspected mole in accounting, or an all-out war with the food truck that keeps getting his lunch order wrong. Jack still does dramatic split-screen monologues, tortures (metaphorically) the vending machine, and keeps a "go bag" full of zip ties and protein bars in his desk. For Semiotician Uklan Tel, the discovery of the object in the vaults of the New Archives was a gift he could scarcely have hoped for. The Holy City, walled and impenetrable, had fascinated him for so long. He'd pored over the Marieldan documents and artifacts that the Archives had collected over the years so many times that his name repeated in the access cards like a prayer . But here was something new - misfiled, overlooked - that had evaded his eye all this time. He was starting to take notes for a book. We could not be more excited to unveil the Marielda 10th Anniversary Vinyl Soundtrack edition in all its unfolding, kaleidoscopic color, and let you know that it is now available to preorder at lostincult.co.uk/marielda. A very limited number of signed copies still remain, to be followed by a second, unsigned run. This extra-special edition, which began in early ideas and sketches six long years ago, is based on concepts by Annie Johnston-Glick and illustrated by Elemei, and is created in collaboration with the British publisher and designworks Lost in Cult. The centerpiece, alongside the full Marielda soundtrack, is the "star book", an unfolding, layered diorama showing four scenes from that fateful High Sun Day, secured by a red ribbon. This object exists in-fiction and tells a story, discovered in the cavernous vaults of The New Archives by Semiotician Uklan Tel, and shipped (much to the chagrin of the Archives' Exceptional Loans division) to a friend in Velas. In addition to the vinyl and star book, contained inside are two enamel pins showing coinage of ancient Hieron, as well as five bone-white d6 dice emblazoned with the sigil of the second god to rule the holy city. Alongside Tel's covering letter, you can also find eight pieces of Marieldan paper ephemera: an undelivered postcard bought by a holidaymaker at a pleasure garden, a double-sided broadsheet of Marielda's newspaper "The Charioteer", and six other mysterious pieces from the City of First Light at a time of great change. Oh, and there's also a 7" vinyl with a plain red label, and we'll say no more on that for now. We've already been blown away by yesterday's response to this project from our Patrons, which has really helped demonstrate that there's an audience for physical media projects from Friends at the Table. It has been an absolute joy to return to this world in collaboration with such incredible artists and designers. Writing in character as gods, citizens, and tourists to the holy city (as well as people thousands of years later, trying to make sense of what they hold in their hands) has been a real treat and we are so excited to finally - finally! - get to share it with you.
