In this solo, I'm catching you up on everything: walking through hard things and what it actually feels like when life finally turns around. I talk about staying friends with an ex (yes, it's possible), how my lifestyle now compares to when I was married, and the biggest perspective shifts I've had post-divorce. I also get into finding joy in the small stuff, how to want what you already have, and my honest thoughts on kids now that I'm in a happy, long(ish) relationship. For a little beauty chat, I discuss my current in-office treatments, easy chest hacks, what I wish I did earlier, and the top five skincare and makeup products I can't live without. This episode is brought to you by YNAB, Armra, Boncharge, Foria, Just Thrive, Fatty15, and Ourplace.Visit www.ynab.com/well to claim an exclusive three-month free trial, with no credit card required.Go to armra.com/WELL or enter WELL to get 30% off your first subscription order.Save 15% off my favorite Red Light Face Mask by using code BLONDE at www.boncharge.com.Get 20% off your first order when you visit foriawellness.com/BLONDE or use code BLONDE at checkout.Go to justthrivehealth.com and use code WELL for 20% off your first 90 day bottle of Just Thrive probiotic. Warning: this episode may contain MIND-BLOWING moments. Stephen Gross is a practising psychoanalyst and a personal hero of mine. He has worked with patients for more than 45 years and his first book, The Examined Life, drew on these experiences. When it was published in 2013, it caused a sensation and went straight to number one in the Sunday Times bestseller list. Since then, hundreds of thousands of readers, including me, have taken it to our hearts. Now 12 years on from his debut, Grosz is back with Love's Labor, which asks fundamental questions around how to love and be loved in return, drawing on his almost half a century of clinical expertise. In this episode we discuss why real love causes suffering, why failed marriages are often the best kind, the difference between surrender and submission in relationships, why loss has to be part of being human and how we can be happy. Plus: a fascinating peek into what it's like to be a psychoanalyst when I get to ask ‘are you ever annoyed by your clients?' ✨ IN THIS EPISODE: 02:28 Understanding Attachment to Suffering 04:25 The Role of Denial in Our Lives 06:32 Failures and Self-Perception 07:23 Stephen's Childhood 21:46 The Power of Unconscious Signals 25:24 Navigating Change and Loss 26:25 The Anxiety of Letting Go 28:22 The Price of Love 29:23 Writing from the Heart 30:16 Support Systems 32:27 Family Dynamics and Psychoanalysis 36:51 Surrender vs. Submission 45:25 Understanding Pain and Grief 48:25 Final Thoughts and Farewell

“. . . [The Trump administration is] using Palestine. They are using the pretext of antisemitism and combating antisemitism to go after us because they know that this is the weakness of the Democratic party. When they go to the universities, they start with combating antisemitism, but then the second ask would be to abolish all DEI programs, to sanitize the history on slavery and the inception of America. And the list goes on and on and on.” - Mahmoud KhalilDescription: Mahmoud Khalil was coming home from an Iftar dinner with his pregnant wife on March 8, 2025 when he was detained without a warrant and transported 1,500 miles to a Louisiana detention camp. A negotiator for the 2024 pro-Palestine student protests at Columbia University, Khalil was a legal permanent resident who'd committed no violence or crime; his abduction shocked the world. The Trump administration was seeking to expel Khalil, not for his acts, but for his otherwise legal “beliefs, statements and associations” which Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote in short letter, would “compromise a compelling US foreign policy interest.” A New Jersey federal judge threw out that case and Khalil was released after 104 days in detention, but the backlash keeps on coming. In this courageous conversation, Mahmoud Khalil joins Laura Flanders to discuss the night of his terrifying detainment, the “Palestinian Exception” and the case brought against him by the Trump administration. They are alleging errors on his green card application and have ordered Khalil to be deported — possibly to Algeria or Syria where his life would be under threat. Despite the risks of deportation, Mahmoud Khalil continues to speak out, and he and his legal team have filed a civil rights lawsuit with the U.S. District Court of New Jersey against the Trump administration to challenge his arrest and detention by ICE. Join Khalil and Flanders as they ask why the question of Palestine is a test for U.S. democracy — and one we are failing.“People mistakenly think that what's happening is far from their doors. They think that this would never happen to them, because of their social status, because of their ethnicity or any of that. But what's happening around us should alarm us . . . It's not about that the U.S. is becoming authoritarian. It is authoritarianism now.” - Mahmoud KhalilGuest: Mahmoud Khalil, Human Rights AdvocateUPDATE - since this interview was recorded- “The recent decision by a federal court in Massachusetts in the AAUP v. Rubio case confirms what Mahmoud has maintained all along: that Trump administration officials have acted in concert to suppress and silence anti-genocide, pro-Palestinian speech, in violation of the First Amendment. We look forward to the remedies that court will order and to pursuing Mahmoud's own separate and ongoing federal court challenge to this unconstitutional policy.” -Ramzi Kassem, co-director of CLEAR, and one of the lawyers representing Mahmoud Khalil.Full Conversation Release: While our weekly shows are edited to time for broadcast on Public TV and community radio, we offer to our members and podcast subscribers the full uncut conversation. 1 / 4 MDJ Script/ Top Stories for October 8th Publish Date: October 8th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Wednesday, October 8th and Happy Birthday to R.L. Stine I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal 1. Man falsely accused of Walmart kidnapping reportedly seeking $25 million in damages 2. Atlanta tenor Timothy Miller launches St. Catherine’s community concert series on Oct. 19 3. Roger Hines publishes debut book All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: INGLES 7 STORY 1: Man falsely accused of Walmart kidnapping reportedly seeking $25 million in damages Mahendra Patel just wanted to help. That’s what he thought he was doing back in March at a Walmart in Acworth—helping a woman he assumed was disabled, struggling to manage two kids in a motorized cart. Instead, he was accused of trying to kidnap her child. What followed was a nightmare: Patel was arrested, denied bond, and spent 46 days in jail. He lost 17 pounds, endured threats from inmates, and was denied his medication. All for what? A misunderstanding. Surveillance footage later cleared his name, showing Patel calmly shopping, finding Tylenol, and leaving the store. Now, he’s suing Acworth for $25 million. STORY 2: Atlanta tenor Timothy Miller launches St. Catherine’s community concert series on Oct. 19 Mark your calendars: local tenor Timothy Miller will take the stage at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church in Marietta on Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. as part of The Friends of Music concert series. You’ve probably heard Miller’s powerful voice before—maybe during the seventh-inning stretch at a Braves game, belting out “God Bless America.” But his talent goes far beyond that. From Verdi’s Aida to Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and even Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Miller’s resume is as impressive as it is diverse. The concert is free (yes, free!), with donations welcome. No tickets needed—just show up early for a good seat. STORY 3: Roger Hines publishes debut book 2 / 4 Roger Hines has released his first book, The Hard and the Beautiful: Life in a Family of Seventeen Children, and it’s as heartfelt as the title suggests. In this memoir, Hines—child number 16 of 17—paints a vivid picture of growing up in rural Mississippi. Life was tough: tenant farms, cotton fields, and the weight of poverty. But it was also rich, thanks to faith, laughter, and the unshakable love of his parents, Walter and Levie Hines. “Poverty doesn’t have to be a dead end,” Hines says. “We were poor, but we were rich in all the ways that matter.” The book is available now on Amazon and at local retailers. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 7 STORY 4: Police: Intoxicated man made false bomb threat at Johnnie MacCracken’s James E. Lusk, 29, of Marietta, allegedly called in a fake bomb threat to Johnnie MacCracken’s Celtic Firehouse Pub late on Sept. 26—because, according to police, he was drunk and angry. Not exactly a great combo. The arrest warrant also claims Lusk grabbed a woman by the arm during the incident, leaving her in pain. He was arrested three days later and charged with simple battery, false public alarm, and filing a false crime report. Lusk spent a few hours in the Cobb County jail before being released on Sept. 30 on a $10,000 bond. STORY 5: Home Depot hosts Kidde’s Cause for Alarm Home Safety Event On Oct. 4, Kidde teamed up with The Home Depot and iHeartMedia to host a lively fire safety event at The Home Depot on Roswell Road in Marietta. Part of Kidde’s Cause For Alarm campaign, the day was all about raising awareness for fire and carbon monoxide safety—and making homes safer, one alarm at a time. The event kicked off with a Donation Drive-Thru “parade,” complete with fire trucks, gear, and local firefighters from Sandy Springs. Families enjoyed music, food, giveaways, and even met Homer, The Home Depot mascot. The goal? Donate up to $1 million in alarms. Break: 3 / 4 STORY 6: Liberty joins the lineup: Cobb County’s newest K-9 embarks on duty Meet Liberty, the newest (and furriest) member of the Cobb County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit. She’s an 11-month-old bloodhound with a nose for tracking—whether it’s missing people or suspects. But don’t let her serious skills fool you; she’s still a puppy at heart, with a love for stuffed animals (or, honestly, anything she can shred). Liberty is partnered with Deputy Barry Bales, a 17-year veteran who previously worked with K-9 Shax, now retired. “Liberty’s tracking abilities will be a huge asset,” said Sheriff Craig Owens. Expect to see her out and about soon—sniffing, serving, and stealing hearts. STORY 7: Marietta Square gets a seasonal makeover The Marietta Square’s looking a little creepier (and a lot more creative) this October, thanks to the 22nd annual Scarecrows on the Square competition. Local businesses, schools, nonprofits, and just plain crafty Marietta folks have all joined in, decking out scarecrows with everything from humor to heart. Judging happens this week, with winners—Best in Show and category champs—announced at HarvestFest on Oct. 18. HarvestFest kicks off at 9 a.m. in Glover Park, featuring arts and crafts, a pie-eating contest, costumes, and kid-friendly fun. We’ll have closing comments after this. In today's hyper-connected world, many of us are experiencing a paradox—more digital interactions, but deeper loneliness. In this episode of Unlearn, I sit down with Dr. Ben Rein, neuroscientist and author of Why Brains Need Friends, to unpack why human connection isn't just emotional—it's biological. From the neuroscience of loneliness to surprising acts of generosity in mice and minnows, we explore how your brain interprets social disconnection as a threat, and why a full calendar of Zoom calls doesn't satisfy your social diet.As someone who experienced this firsthand—working remotely, starting over in a new country—I share my own journey to unlearning the myth of self-sufficiency and redesigning my life to engineer real connection. This conversation is a call to rethink how we connect, show up for each other, and take our social health as seriously as sleep, diet, or exercise.Key TakeawaysLoneliness Is a Biological Threat: Your brain interprets social disconnection like hunger or pain—not just a mood, but a warning signal.Small In-Person Moments Matter: Even brief, face-to-face interactions boost mood and cognitive function more than digital ones.Isolation Damages the Brain: Chronic loneliness raises cortisol, shrinks memory centers, and can shorten your lifespan.Introverts Still Need People: Social time benefits everyone—introverts just hit their saturation point sooner.Generosity Is Hardwired: From rats to dolphins, the impulse to connect and give is deeply embedded in our biology.Connection Requires Unlearning: Independence and solitude aren't always virtues—sometimes they're survival myths in disguise.Additional InsightsSocial prediction systems in the brain were scrambled by COVID—and many people still haven't recalibrated. Most people think they're worse-than-average at socializing, which fuels avoidance and false self-judgment.Digital tools remove the social cues—tone, expression, touch—that our brains need to feel emotionally nourished.Empathy is not automatic—it's biased and trainable, shaped by exposure to difference and intention.Rebuilding community isn't just good for you—it's essential for physical, mental, and societal health.Episode Highlights00:00 – Episode RecapBen Rein discusses the importance of socializing, likening it to sleep, diet, and exercise, and emphasizing its role in overall well-being.02:07 – Guest Introduction: Ben ReinBarry introduces Dr. Ben Rein, neuroscientist and author, and outlines the episode's focus on the biological necessity of human connection.03:43 – How COVID Broke Our Social PredictionsBen shares his neuroscience background and explores how societal shifts and the pandemic disrupted the brain's expectations for everyday interaction.08:23 – Barry's Story: “You Sound Lonely”Barry recounts a personal moment of realization and how a friend's observation pushed him to rebuild his social life with intention.11:29 – Why We Miss the Signs of LonelinessBen explains why loneliness often goes undetected, how it manifests as stress, and why virtual connection isn't enough.16:44 – The Hard Work of Making FriendsBarry reflects on the discomfort of building new friendships as an adult—and why it's worth the effort for mental and emotional health.21:10 – The Neuroscience of Social FearBen breaks down why we underestimate the value of interaction, how fear...
Friends of the Rosary,Today, the reading of the Gospel (Luke 11:1-4) presents us with the prayer that Christ Jesus taught us.He said to the disciples, "When you pray, say:Father, hallowed be your name,Your Kingdom come.Give us each day our daily breadand forgive us our sinsfor we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us,and do not subject us to the final test."Through the "Lord's Prayer", we put God's holy name first; we strive to do his will in all things and at all times; we ask to be strengthened by spiritual food; we commit to be forgiving and withstand the dark powers.Humans are wired with the desire to speak to God and listen to Him. That impulse — that grace — is planted deep within us.Our prayer is not designed to change God's mind or to tell God something he doesn't know. He is rather the One who wants to give us good things, though they might not always be what we want.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Friends, in our second reading this Sunday, Paul writes to Timothy, “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my gospel.” The Gospel is not the ethical teachings of Jesus or the doctrinal teachings of Saint Paul; the Gospel is Jesus himself. And Christianity is not a noble spiritual path or a set of ideas; it's a relationship to Jesus. All those other things are great and follow from him—but it's about him!

In this episode, I sit down with Kevin Thompson, a man who has built an extraordinary business around something most people only do out of kindness: connecting others. I've met plenty of people over the years who are natural connectors. They love introducing friends, clients, and peers to each other. Those introductions often lead to life-changing opportunities. But Kevin is the first person I've met who figured out how to turn that gift into a sustainable business model. Kevin's story begins with more than a decade in the publishing world, where he grew his company through over 600 strategic partnerships. Along the way, he discovered how much joy he found in helping people meet and collaborate. For years, he did it freely, simply because it felt good to serve. But one introduction in particular, connecting marketing legends Perry Marshall and Brian Kurtz, planted a powerful seed. That connection eventually led to a multimillion-dollar event, and when Kevin was publicly recognized for being the bridge that made it all possible, he began wondering: What if I could make a living just doing this? For a long time, he battled with the ethics of charging for introductions. Friends even told him it wasn't something that anyone should even consider. But in 2017, a single conversation changed everything. A friend suggested he host a small, in-person gathering of the entrepreneurs he knew. Kevin couldn't sleep that night. By 4:30 the next morning, he was making a list of everyone he wanted to invite. His enthusiasm was contagious. His wife offered to handle catering, and the first six entrepreneurs he spoke to said, “I'm in.” That August, Kevin hosted his first event at his home in Arlington, Washington, with 15 attendees who each paid $5,000 to be there. They spent time sharing openly, collaborating deeply, and forming meaningful relationships that continued long after the event ended. A month later, he hosted another group, and it filled just as quickly. What began as a simple idea soon became a thriving business. From there, Kevin developed an ongoing model, first through one-on-one connection work and later through group experiences that aligned more naturally with his gifts. Today, he helps entrepreneurs create five-, six-, and seven-figure business opportunities through authentic relationship-building, often earning revenue shares from the connections he facilitates. Throughout this conversation, Kevin and I explore not only how he did it, but the deeper mindset that made it possible, the excitement, confidence, and belief that magnetized people toward his vision. You'll hear how he overcame doubt, learned from missteps, refined his structure, and ultimately built a business that's as fulfilling as it is profitable. Insights Gained from This Episode The surprising way one powerful introduction can change the trajectory of your business and someone else's. Why enthusiasm, confidence and conviction often matter more than a polished business plan when sharing a new idea. How imposter syndrome keeps many people from seeing the true value they already bring to others. The mindset shift from “I shouldn't charge for this” to “People are happy to pay for the value I create.” The simple structure behind Kevin's first $5,000-per-person event and why intimacy and authenticity mattered more than luxury or production. How to test new business ideas through real conversations before locking yourself into a plan. What Kevin learned from early business models that didn't work, and how he redesigned them to fit his natural strengths. The importance of alignment: when the structure of your business supports the way you actually like to show up, everything flows easier. How relationships, built with integrity and generosity, can create long-term, recurring income. The power of turning what you naturally love to do into something that sustains your life, your purpose, and the people you serve. I feel so fortunate that I got to interview today's guest, Dr. Trish Leigh. As soon as I saw her book, Mind Over Explicit Matter: Quit Porn and Improve Intimacy Through Neuroscience, I knew I had to talk to her about it. Friends, this conversation is incredibly important, and you must not miss it! Dr. Trish is a neuroscientist, a sex addiction recovery coach, a brain health coach, an author, speaker and mom to 5. She is a wealth of knowledge about the way the brain is impacted by pornography. So, if you are wondering how porn impacts the brain, and you should, this episode is for you! Dr. Trish helps us understand how porn hijacks the brain's dopamine system and the problems and dangers that causes. She explains the main reasons people use porn, how people use porn to numb negative feelings and ultimately how it causes a lack of joy in life. We talk about toxic relationships fueled by porn use. We also discuss masturbation and why it is not harmless. Yep, we went there! (If you want to learn more about the topic of masturbation, I have a whole chapter in my book on this topic because it is a question I get asked so often. So many parents have questions and so many of us don't know who to ask or where to go. I'm here to help!) We also discuss how putting boundaries in place for our kids is hard, but worth it. Dr. Trish gives us practical, doable tips as we are raising kids in this new era of parenting. There is just so much here. Dr. Trish and I don't agree on everything—for example, I do believe porn is a moral issue as well as an addiction issue—but wow, I am so grateful for what I have learned from her! Learning how things like pornography impacts and even changes the brain is a powerful tool as we raise kids in this porn saturated world. I know that God is the designer of our incredible, intricate brains and that we can honor Him by protecting not just our kids' bodies, but their brains and hearts too. It is up to us offer our kids something better than porn could ever give them. If you don't know how to do that, read my book, It's Time to Talk to Your Kids About Porn. And if you are ready to educate yourself about how porn impacts the brain, get Dr. Trish's book. Friends of the Rosary,Today, October 7, is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. The feast was instituted to honor the Virgin Mary in thanksgiving for the Christian victory over the Turks and Ottoman Empire at Lepanto on October 7, 1571.The naval victory, which saved Europe from being overrun by Islamic forces, was a divine favor granted through the recitation of the Rosary of Mary. Pope St. Pius V and all Christians had prayed the Rosary for victory. The Feast is a great festival of thanksgiving for the signal and countless benefits bestowed on Christendom through the Rosary of our Blessed Queen, Mary Help of Christians.Across history, successive popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary.Pope Benedict XVI invited all families to pray the Rosary, “It is a contemplative and Christocentric prayer, inseparable from the meditation of Sacred Scripture. It is the prayer of the Christian who advances in the pilgrimage of faith, in the following of Jesus, preceded by Mary.”Saint John Paul II said, “The rosary does indeed ‘mark the rhythm of human life,' bringing it into harmony with the ‘rhythm' of God's own life, in the joyful communion of the Holy Trinity, our life's destiny and deepest longing. Through the rosary, the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer.”The Rosary is a contemplative, mental, and vocal prayer, biblically inspired, that centers on meditation on the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, and brings down God's blessing on the faithful.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Dr. Kurt Bjorklund explores Job 15-21, revealing that while friends may offer "miserable comfort" through judgment or "better comfort" through presence, the best comfort comes from knowing our living Redeemer who will stand on the earth. When suffering strikes, your ultimate hope isn't found in circumstances or even good friends, but in Jesus Christ who has bought back your life from sin and will one day restore all that's broken.Message Summary and Application - https://www.orchardhillchurch.com/blog-post/2025/10/06/why-did-this-happen-to-me-3-when-friends-arent-helpfulSubscribe to Orchard Hill Plus! - https://orchardhillplus.buzzsprout.com/shareConnect with Orchard Hill ChurchWebsite | https://www.orchardhillchurch.comMobile App | https://https://www.orchardhillchurch.com/appYouTube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/OrchardHillChurchPAFacebook | https://www.facebook.com/orchardhillchurch/Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/orchardhillchurch/Twitter | https://twitter.com/orchard_hill

In late February of 2024, 46-year-old Samantha Tolbert vanished from Carroll County, Georgia, a rural area in western Georgia, along the Alabama state line. At first, Samantha's absence didn't raise an alarm. She kept in touch with her daughter, but it wasn't unusual for some time to pass between calls. That all changed on March 7, 2024, when deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded to a call in Tyus, a small community in Carroll County. There, they discovered Samantha's ex-husband was deceased. What stood out immediately was that the vehicle he had driven to the scene wasn't his; it was Samantha's truck, but she was nowhere to be found.Investigators attempted to contact Samantha because she was the registered owner of the vehicle, but all efforts to reach her were unsuccessful. Friends and family they contacted said they hadn't heard from her either. In that moment, the troubling truth came into focus: not only was Samantha's ex-husband dead, but Samantha herself was missing. Suddenly, two stories collided, one ending in death, the other vanished. With Samantha's ex-husband no longer alive, investigators were left with a haunting mystery: what really happened in those final days, and what secrets did he take with him?If you have any information about the disappearance of Samantha Tolbert, please contact Investigator Amber Cardell with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office at 770-830-5916 or email acardell@carrollsheriffga.gov.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Catherine, David and Matt are finally back together on a Monday to talk all about Amanda Anisimova's title in Beijing and events so far in Shanghai. Part one - WTA Beijing. We discuss Anisimova's final three matches in Beijing en route to the title, analysing how she's become such a consistent force at the top of the sport. How helpful could this title be in turning her into a major champion? And what's left to improve? There's also chat about Linda Noskova's extraordinary semi-final win over Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff's struggle for form, and Emma Navarro winning a final set bagel against Iga Swiatek. Part two - ATP Shanghai (38m16s). The heat and humidity have been the main talking points in Shanghai so far and we focus on the large number of retirements, headlined by Jannik Sinner's against Tallon Griekspoor. There's also chat about what a chance this is for Novak Djokovic to win another big title, the other possible contenders for the title, and Alexander Zverev's controversial comments about court speed on tour. Part three - WTA Wuhan Preview and News (64m55s). We look forward to Aryna Sabalenka's return in Wuhan, there's a moving statement from Daria Kasatkina as she shuts down her season, and we celebrate Mary Carillo's Hall of Fame nomination. Courtney Harding, founder of Friends with Holograms and a leading voice in spatial computing, joins Srini to discuss the real-world applications and philosophical implications of immersive technologies like VR and AR. Drawing from her background in music journalism, activism, and public policy, she unpacks how virtual experiences are reshaping education, work, and socialization — especially for marginalized communities. Courtney challenges the common fear narratives around tech, advocating instead for thoughtful regulation, inclusive design, and greater human agency. From the classroom to the workplace, from social VR to AI-enhanced creativity, she explores how immersive tools can increase empathy, bridge physical divides, and elevate equity — when built with intention.
