John Davies' "Nosce Teipsum: of Human Knowledge"

We that acquaint ourselves with every zone,And pass both tropics and behold the poles,When we come home, are to ourselves unknown,And unacquainted still with our own souls.Today's poem is Davies' lengthy meditation on what man can know and what he could stand to learn. Happy reading.Poet and lawyer Sir John Davies was born in Wiltshire and educated at Winchester College and Queen's College, Oxford, though historians disagree about whether he graduated. In 1588, he enrolled in the Middle Temple, where he studied with John Donne, and was called to the bar in 1595. In addition to his legal study, Davies wrote poetry, notably Orchestra, or, A Poeme of Dancing (1596). Davies's other works include a series of epigrams drawn from his youthful misadventures; Nosce teipsum (1594), a poetic treatise on the immortality of the soul; and Hymnes of Astraea in Acrosticke Verse (1599),an acrostic poem spelling the words Elisabetha Regina. Davies also contributed poetic dialogues to Francis Davison's Poetical Rhapsody(1602). His Collected Poems appeared in 1622. It is thought that Davies accompanied King James to Scotland after Queen Elizabeth's death in 1603. Eventually knighted by the king, Davies was made solicitor general for Ireland and emerged as a champion of legal reform in Ireland. He attempted to lay the grounds for a strong civil society, albeit one that benefited England and English rule in all cases. Davies helped cement pro-English property laws and advocated the expulsion of Catholic priests to shore up Protestantism. He was appointed speaker in the Irish Parliament in 1613 and presided over the first Protestant majority. He returned to England and served in the Parliament of 1621. Charles I appointed Davies lord chief justice in 1626, but he died just before officially taking office. John Donne gave his funeral oration. Davies was buried in St. Martin-in-the-Fields.-bio via Poetry Foundation This is a public episode.

Duminică 9 iunie a.c.

SynopsisThe short career of Charles Tomlinson Griffes is one of the more tragic “might-have-beens” of American music history. Griffes died at 35 in 1920 just as his music was being taken up by the major American orchestras of his day.As most American composers of his time, Griffes studied in Germany, and his early works were, not surprisingly, rather Germanic in tone. But beginning around 1911, he began composing works inspired by French impressionism and the art of Asia. The Boston Symphony, under Pierre Monteux, premiered his tone poem The Pleasure Dome of Kubla-Khan and the New York Symphony, under Walter Damrosch, his Poeme for flute and orchestra. On today's date in 1919, the Philadelphia Orchestra, under Leopold Stokowski, premiered four orchestral pieces: Nocturne, Bacchanale, Clouds and one of his best works, The White Peacock. The Philadelphia newspaper reviews of the premieres called Griffes' work “one of the hopeful intimations for the future of American music.”A severe bout of influenza left Griffes too weak to attend these Philadelphia premieres under Stokowski, and he died of a lung infection the following spring.Music Played in Today's ProgramCharles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) The White Peacock; Dallas Symphony; Andrew Litton, cond. "[T]he first aim of Dante, in his landscape imagery [in the Earthly Paradise], is to show evidence of this perfect liberty, and of the purity and sinlessness of the new nature, converting pathless ways into happy ones." - John Ruskin   For the first episode back from the summer Rachel is joined by Theology Professor Matthew Rothaus Moser to discuss Dante's Divine Comedy and its themes of nature and Creation. Matthew Rothaus Moser is Theology Professor at Azusa Pacific University. He has a recently published title Love Itself is Understanding: Hans Urs von Balthasar's Theology of the Saints and has a forthcoming title Dante and the Poetic Practice of Theology. To mark the 700th anniversary of Dante's death, in this episode Rachel and Matthew discuss the depictions of nature in The Divine Comedy, in particular the end of Purgatorio where Dante enters Eden. We trace how Dante builds the imagery of forests, trees, rivers and more over the course of the Comedy. We discuss the various themes and theology that Dante is exploring with this imagery, from humanity's current state of exile from the Garden of Earthly Delights, to the power of natural contemplation to turn us towards God, to the ways in which God reveals himself to us through his creation. The short career of Charles Tomlinson Griffes is one of the more tragic “might-have-beens” of American music history. Griffes died at 35 years old, in 1920, just as his music was being taken up by the major American orchestras of his day. As most American composers of his time, Griffes studied in Germany, and his early works were, not surprisingly, rather Germanic in tone. But beginning around 1911, Griffes began composing works inspired by French impressionism and the art of Asia. The Boston Symphony under Pierre Monteux premiered his tone-poem “The Pleasure Dome of Kubla-Khan,” and the New York Symphony under Walter Damrosch his “Poeme” for flute and orchestra. On today’s date in 1919, the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski premiered four orchestral pieces: “Nocturne,” “Bacchanale,” “Clouds,” and one of his best works, entitled “The White Peacock.” The Philadelphia newspaper reviews of the premieres called Griffes’ work, “one of the hopeful intimations for the future of American music.” A severe bout of influenza left Griffes too weak to attend these Philadelphia premieres under Stokowski, and he died of a lung infection the following spring.

The WQED Production airs nationally September 8 at 10pm.  They discuss the music Yo-Yo Ma recorded expressly for the program “Poeme per violoncello et orchestre” written by his father Hiao-Tsiun Ma  who studied violin in Shanghai which became a safe harbor for 20,000 Jews during WWII. It was not until decades later that the composition was completed at the request of a young Yo-Yo Ma who was studying the cello and wanted something challenging to play. The conversation includes Yo-Y o Ma’s knowledge of Shanghai during the Second World War and his return more recently, how the music reveals his Father’s Shanghai experience and his later Parisian sound world, how the recording was made during a pandemic and more.

Juan Amenábar - Los Peces (1957 - Chile) The first tape piece from South American composer Juan Amenábar Ruiz. It's an electroacoustic work based on Fibonacci sequence tape manipulations of recorded piano sounds. From Santiago, Chile, he was an engineer and composer and pioneer of electroacoustic music in South America. Studyied composition at the National Conservatory of Music in Santiago, later travelling to Bonn, Germany, where he studied with Stockhausen's teacher Wener Meyer-Eppler. 2. Iannis Xenakis - Concret PH (1958 - Greece) Iannis Xenakis once approached Messiaen in Paris for composition lessons, but Messiaen turned him down, saying “I think one should study harmony and counterpoint. But this was a man so much out of the ordinary that I said… 'No, you are almost 30, you have the good fortune of being Greek, of being an architect and having studied special mathematics. Take advantage of these things. Do them in your music'." Concert PH (paraboloïdes hyperboliques), was written to be heard as audiences entered and excited the Phillips Pavillion at the '58 World Fair in Brussels, Xenakis was also involved in building the structure, and Varese's Poeme electronique was played while people were inside the building. 3. Jorge Antunes - Auto-Retrato Sobre Paisaje Porteno (1969 - Brazil) Known as the originator of electronic music in Brazil, Jorge Antunes studied music and physics in Rio de Janeiro. Os Mutantes were building DIY guitar pedals, but Jorge Antunes was building himself oscillators, filters and modulators. He has been a professor at the University of Brasilia since 1973. 4. Delia Derbyshire - Falling (1964 - USA) Delia Derbyshire was a true electronic music pioneer. Working with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, she created the famous Doctor Who theme. The Dreams was a collaboration with Barry Bermange, of voice recordings of people describing their dreams, set to an entirely electronic soundtrack by Derbyshire. 5. Reissued by Sub Rosa in 2017. 6. Mammane Sani - Tunan (1979 - Niger) Mammane Sani was a pioneer of West African electronic music, and creator of much of the incidental music used for radio in Niger. This, his first and only album, electronic interpretations of traditional Wodaabe and Tuareg music, was recorded in two takes at the National Radio of Niger, and released on a limited casette by the Ministry of Culture . Reissued by Sahel Sounds in 2013. 7. Yishak Banjaw - Libey Ma'aduley (1986 - Ethiopia) Originally from Addis Ababa, Yishak Banjaw created this album at his house in Eritrea, on a Casio PT rented from a friend. He recorded the whole album live, directly to his tape recorder. Reissued by Teranga Beat in 2016 8. Gökçen Kaynatan - Lost Island (1973 - Turkey) A pioneer of electronic music in Turkey. While there was much experimentation in Turkey at the time, Gökçen pioneered the use of electronics. Reissued by Finders Keepers in 2017. 9. The Upsetters - Chim Cherie (1973 - Jamaica) Reggae and Dub had a huge influence on the development of electronic music, and none more that Lee Scratch Perry. It's hard to pick one, but this early dub from Pressure Sounds' 2010 compilation shows just how far ahead they were. 10. Codek - Closer (1981 - France) Originally release on Ivorian Coast label West African Music, this is the a-side from the well known ‘Tam Tam' single, recorded in France by Jean-Marie Salau.
