The big mobile network operators in South Africa “have never shown a willingness to … accommodate smaller players”, so the notion that they should be entitled to “Fair Share” is “difficult to swallow for smaller operators who have been at the end of their [unfair] business practices”. That's the view of Dominic Cull, a leading specialist South African ICT lawyer and regulatory adviser to the Internet Service Providers' Association (Ispa), who was speaking to the TechCentral Show (TCS) in an interview (published below). Cull's criticism of Fair Share – at least in the form being advanced by the large telecoms operators – comes as the Association of Comms & Technology (ACT), a lobby group that represents the country's largest telecoms providers, agitates for its adoption by policymakers in South Africa. Fair Share is an idea that has gained traction among operators in Europe, where margins have been pressured in a competitive market. They argue that so-called OTT – “over the top” – companies, which include streaming video providers such as Netflix, Disney+ and TikTok, should contribute a “fair share” to the development of broadband infrastructure. Critics have said this is simply a move by infrastructure providers, which have experienced margin compression with the move from voice to data services, to try to claw back lost profits. Speaking at last month's Datacentrix Showcase 2024 event in Sandton, ICT industry stalwart Andile Ngcaba – who founded Convergence Partners – said the move by ACT to pressure policymakers and regulators over “Fair Share” is not needed or wanted in the South African context. “If it ain't broke, don't fix it,” said Ngcaba, who is a previous policymaker in South Africa and who served as director-general of communications in the Nelson Mandela administration. In the interview with TCS, Cull echoed this view and said ACT's lobbying for Fair Share is partly aimed at “catching the ear” of newly appointed communications minister Solly Malatsi and influencing what is included in forthcoming amendments to legislation that governs the ICT sector in South Africa. In this episode of TCS, Cull chats about: • Whether ACT has a point about Fair Share; • How big content players impact smaller operators and internet service providers, and why the call for Fair Share is coming from the industry's biggest players; • The investments by the OTT players in both terrestrial and subsea fibre infrastructure, including Google's investment in the Equiano cable and Meta Platforms' involvement in 2Africa; • Whether mobile network operators doomed to become low-margin “dumb pipes” like other utility industries. Can they somehow avoid that fate? Don't miss the discussion, and if you enjoyed it, check out our December 2023 interview with Dominic Cull on Starlink in South Africa. TechCentral

Episode 346 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Scott Weller, CTO & Co-Founder at EnFi. The formula for a thriving tech ecosystem ideally looks something like this: * Entrepreneurial-minded person works for startups and learns a ton. Perhaps they even witness success at scale to an exit. * Said person takes lessons learned and builds their own company to an exit. * Said person then starts to mentor and invest back into the ecosystem to fund the next generation of companies. * Said person eventually finds an idea that they can't get out of their head and launches another company. This is the case for Scott, as he was involved in tech from an early age and connected with a talented group of entrepreneurs who were building the first generation of online gaming where he witnessed a couple of exits. He then co-founded and was the CTO of SessionM which led to a successful exit to Mastercard. He was angel investing and advising companies when he and another successful entrepreneur, Josh Summers, saw a problem which was a perfect opportunity to disrupt an industry using AI. Josh has the same startup founder pedigree as he was part of the WHERE team that was acquired by PayPal and then went on to found Clypd which was acquired by Xandr. The two have come together to build a company called EnFi which recently announced $7.5M in seed funding led by Unusual Ventures with participation from Boston Seed, Argon Ventures and Impellent Ventures. EnFi is accelerating complex credit analysis and risk monitoring with AI Assistants for bank and private lending origination, underwriting, and portfolio management teams. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * A discussion about the AI landscape in the Boston tech scene. * Scott's background story and his early involvement with one of the very first Internet Service Providers called Intelecom Data Systems as a teenager. * Working at an early stage web gaming startup called Gamesville which was acquired by Lycos. * GameLogic and the early innovation of working with regulated games and the level of innovation in terms of patent creation which was acquired by Scientific Games. * Being early to market with an online video product for SMBs called SnapYap that he started with others. * The founding story of SessionM with Mark Hermann & Lars Albright and how the company evolved through the years, plus its acquisition by Mastercard and how things materialized post-acquisition. * SessionM's involvement in building the very successful mobile app for Starbucks and its bonus & loyalty campaigns. * The background story and all the details about EnFi and how they are disrupting the market. * Common startup mistakes that he sees entrepreneurs make over and over again. * And so much more.
Join us as Tom, Eyvonne, and Russ hang out for another roundtable. We start the show talking about Tom's plant (is it real or ... ??). What does copyright have to do with Internet Service Providers? Should the two topics be related at all? What can the IETF do about Internet centralization?
Welcome to CNBC-TV18's Marketbuzz Podcast. Here are all the important updates ahead of the trading session of July 16 -Even as the Nifty traded in a 110-point range on July 15, it crossed the 24,600 mark, made a new high of 24,635, and closed above levels of 24,550. Interestingly, barring SBI and ITC, none of the major index heavyweights contributed to the Nifty's upmove yesterday. Most of them ended with a flat to negative bias. But contributions came from PSUs like ONGC and NTPC, along with Bajaj Auto, which reports results today. -Today might turn out to be a volatile day for the financials, as the Nifty Financial Services will have its weekly expiry. Additionally, with Wednesday being a market holiday, the Nifty Bank too, will have its weekly expiry on Tuesday. -GIFTNifty was trading with a premium of over 17 points from Nifty Futures' Monday close, which indicates a flat-to-positive start for the Indian market. -Earnings: Bajaj Auto, CRISIL, Dee Development Engineers, DB Corp, Himadri Speciality Chemicals, Jubilant Ingrevia, Just Dial, L&T Finance, Network18 and TV18. -Stocks to watch: Jio Financial Services, SpiceJet, Vedanta, Hindustan Unilever, Unichem Labs, Lupin, Zee Entertainment -Stocks in Asia were muted in early Tuesday trading, following gains on Wall Street fueled by optimism surrounding a second Donald Trump term as the former US president chose his running mate. Equity benchmarks rose in Japan and Korea, while those in Australia were steady. Futures for Hong Kong stocks pointed to a decline. -Caution in Asia comes amid signs of emerging market volatility in anticipation that Trump's tariff threats will be implemented. -Overnight on Wall Street, the blue-chip Dow also reached a new intraday high, advancing half a percent to close at 40,211.72. Similarly, The S&P 500 added 0.28% to 5,631.22, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% to end at 18,472.57. Trump's rising odds of victory boosted oil producers, gun makers and private prisons. His pro-cryptocurrency stance lifted the industry. Tesla Inc. rallied as Elon Musk endorsed Trump. Solar firms sank as Democrats are seen as more friendly toward the sector. -Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in an interview that second-quarter economic data has provided policymakers greater confidence that inflation is heading down to the central bank's 2% goal, possibly paving the way for near-term interest-rate cuts. He made clear he didn't intend to send any specific message about the timing of rate reductions. -In commodities, oil prices edged lower on worries about a slowing Chinese economy crimping demand, though a growing consensus that the U.S. The Federal Reserve will begin cutting its key interest rate as soon as September limited declines. Brent futures fell to $84.76 a barrel. -Back home, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia is likely to meet leaders from Telecom and Internet Service Providers. DOT has called for meeting of Stakeholder Advisory Committee for TSPs i.e. Telecom Service Providers. This committee includes, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Akash Ambani, Kumar Manglam Birla and N Chandrasekhar. The issues of Unsolicited Commercial Communication, network quality, and 6G are likely to be on the cards. Tune in to the Marketbuzz Podcast for more cues

Today we sit down with Evan Swarztrauber to anlayze the resurrection of the Title re-classification of Internet Service Providers, otherwise known as net neutrality. While net neutrality is an important principle, when weaponized by the FCC and the federal government, it could have disastrous consequences for investment, free speech, and innovation across the board. This week on the podcast, Christopher speaks with Brent Christensen, President and CEO of the Minnesota Telecom Alliance (MTA). The MTA is a trade association that currently represents 41 holding company members operating over 70 companies across the state, including cooperatively-owned, family-owned, and publicly-traded Internet Service Providers. Most are rural broadband providers.Chris and Brent dive into a discussion about the Enhanced Alternative Connect America Model (Enhanced A-CAM), which is focused more on smaller providers than the Connect America Fund (CAF), and how so many smaller providers are surpassing the 25/3 Mbps speed requirement associated with that program by building fiber-to-the-home networks that will serve their subscribers long into the future. The two discuss the challenges and complications of the various federal broadband moneys coming into Minnesota, how they interact with one another, and how these collective funding opportunities might be efficiently leveraged to connect the most Minnesotans to high-quality broadband. ★ Support this podcast ★
Clasp your hands together and mumble intently your needs to a vacant space. That's called prayer. Does it work? What about when you read Hebrew from that little blue book in your shull? Did your prayers work then? Or how about when you wrapped that leather strap called Tefillin around your arm? Did Hashem hear you? The truth is, no one knows. Depending on who you talk to, they either swear by it and tell the tales of a mass revelation or the effort is sadly futile. What are we to think? Brad Weber, Founder and CEO of Avita Digital, is a proud student of Torah study and prayer. He is also a cancer survivor. His insights on his approach to prayer will leave you pleasantly surprised. Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, was equally surprised by Weber's answers on prayer, our connection to G-d, and how we personally grow from adding intention into our day-to-day. About Brad: Brad considers it a privilege to work with amazing companies and grow their online revenues and protect their reputation. A results-oriented, serial entrepreneur with multiple public and private exits, Brad loves tech, learning, teaching and using a hybrid marketing model to grow online businesses. Some of Brad's achievements in his three decades of digital marketing and management include pioneering comprehensive e-commerce solutions to early Internet businesses with Card.com. Card.com offered integrated affiliate tracking and robust chargeback risk mitigation and was quickly acquired. Brad later co-founded Interactive Telecom Network (ITN), establishing and maintaining rapid growth for one of the region's largest Internet Service Providers. As ITN's Chief Operating Officer, Brad led teams of 100+ in sales, online marketing, information systems, engineering, content management, e-commerce and customer service. This included spearheading the company's pioneering movement into organic SEO and cutting-edge PPC strategies. ITN grew from a start-up to $45M in annual revenue in just a few short years and was sold to the publicly traded New Frontier Media. Brad next co-founded BeNetSafe, a forward-thinking company that created and launched the first automated reputation management solution for diverse clients including individuals, companies and specialized government applications. Brad remains grateful to support clients with expansive growth and exceeding profit goals. His mission in the creation of Avita Digital in 2003 continues to be the development of new strategies and better programs for companies that rely on digital marketing services to build better brands and ensure a good online reputation. While thinking up new digital innovations, Brad enjoys yoga, hiking, traveling and learning how to better serve Avita's clients. TRAI has released a consultation paper discussing the potential regulation of OTT platforms, reigniting discussions on net neutrality. The key questions raised: Should communication and entertainment platforms compensate for network usage? And should they be regulated in the same way as telecom service providers? Should selective banning of apps be allowed instead of blanket internet bans? Join Sridhar Krishna as he discusses these topics with Rijesh Panicker and Bharath Reddy. Noah Lieberman was excited by flight from his first experience flying on a DC3 around Mexico as an 8 year old. Affectionately known as the Gooney Bird, the DC3 has found a warm spot in a lot of our hearts. Noah was keen to become an aerospace engineer. He also wanted to learn how to fly. Shortly after beginning his pilot training as a teenager, he ran out of funds. He later went to university and continued his career in the tech industry, repairing hardware and later delved into software development. He cemented his belief in customer service while working in tech support, which was evident while running Coradine. If you have ever found the need to reach out to Coradine, you will understand what I'm talking about. With a young family, he needed to make a strategic decisions to chase his dream of working in aerospace. Moving across the country and a new adventure began working, building websites for an Internet Service Provider. After several frantic years in the burgeoning website industry, Noah decided to make a big decision to get back to his dream of flight.Noah continued his path to become a pilot. He was surprised by the amount of paperwork required to keep track of the flying details. Having been an Apple fan for several years, he decided to make his own database for his flying training. He was sure that other Mac users would be interested, so he posted it on a shareware service and quickly pilots from all over the world began adopting his “personal logbook”.Pilots began to ask for specifics to their own needs and different logbook requirements for Civil Aviation organisations all around the globe. The launched on day one of the Apple App Store, being one of two aviation apps. This coincided with AirVenture Oshkosh, with hundreds of pilots arriving at his small booth announcing the launch of LogTen, by Coradine.15 years and more than 150 000 customers later, LogTen has become the most successful logbook program for professional pilots.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Calvin is the Founder and CEO of Melon Mobile, South Africa's newest Mobile Network. While the service is recent on the scene, the team have been building the product for the past two years. Calvin has more than two decades experience combining entrepreneurship, internet service provider and providing efficient simple solutions to everyday life.Calvin was born into a family of farmers, originally resident in Zimbabwe. During his school years his family moved to South Africa and continued farming in the Northern Eastern corner of South Africa, near Louis Trichardt, also known as “Fightertown RSA”, as this is where the Fighter Squadrons of the South African Air Force are based. He went straight into business consulting with Accenture, before a family need brought him back to the farming town of Louis Trichardt once more. When Calvin's father passed away, he was needed to help the family. It was during this period where Calvin put his entrepreneurial mind to the test, combining tech and farming. Calvin quickly made a name for himself solving farming problems with his simple tech solutions. The tech business pulled him back to Gauteng and his journey continued.Years down the line, Calvin was head hunted to set up a business unit with the mighty MTN brand. The “big yellow machine” as he affectionately refers to MTN, wanted Calvin to set up the home fibre and mobile data division, to run in parallel to their already dominant voice business. Calvin rallied his team and dubbed the new division “supersonic”, and boy did the success come quickly. Within 2 years, supersonic won best Internet Service Provider in South Africa 2019.Our journey crossed paths when he reached out to me to set up a remote call centre, during the crazy work-from-home and school-from-home era of 2020. Demand for internet rocketed and he needed to scale a team quickly. Digital Care was born to support supersonic with customer care. Please enjoy this conversation with Calvin Collett. This is a slow death that has been going on for almost ten years. Today we talk about what is causing it and how the cable companies can not only reverse it but thrive. The most obvious is that there are streaming alternatives that provide on demand entertainment. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Apple as well as the networks provide streaming content. You no longer need a set top box provided by cable and satellite companies to watch anything that is being broadcast to the masses. Ironically you need high speed internet and for most of us that is being provided by cable companies. This is a missed opportunity for better bundles by cable providers. We are no longer willing to pay for a ton of channels that we don't watch. We joke about getting what we want (a la carte programming) is costing us more, which is true. However, for the same amount or slightly more money, we get an unproportionally large amount of programming. When we first opined that it would be great to just watch the channels we wanted and only pay for them, we had no idea what was coming in the way of content. There is just so much content out there that you have to subscribe to more services which ends up driving up the cost of your “TV” plan. And it is good content!! No more summer doldrums as far as TV programming goes. If you have a limited budget you now allocate it to other services and not cable or satellite. Companies like ESPN, Discovery, and HBO have made their content available directly to the consumer. No need for a cable or satellite service to get some of the best programming on TV. Cable and Satellite service costs have really risen to the point where the pain of separating is less than the pain of remaining on the service. Back in the day if you wanted to watch something it had to be on TV. Now we watch on our phones, tablets and computers. It is so easy to take your content with you using streaming providers. Your entertainment is now portable both inside and outside the house. With IPTV every room in the house can easily be connected to your streamers. Gone are the days when adding a TV to a bedroom was an ordeal to string cable to it. Now if you have wifi you can add a TV. So what can be done to reverse this trend? In our opinion there is nothing that can be done. However, the cable providers can steer into the skid and go full IPTV. We looked into adding a cable TV and an Internet bundles and on paper it looked comparable so why not just go with getting both services in one place. Well it's the fees and hidden costs that get you. We could not find a true IPTV service through Cox. Sure they had an option where you could watch your TV on different devices. But all their plans required a set top box that you have to rent. Plus the costs are only guaranteed for two years and require a two year commitment. And to top it off, there are a bunch of fees that just break the bank and make this an uncompetitive choice for almost everyone. For cable companies to survive, they have to stop being cable companies and embrace the fact that they are now primarily Internet Service Providers that can also offer IPTV at a lower cost that other IPTV services.
