Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 24, 2023 is: luminaria • loo-muh-NAIR-ee-uh • noun A luminaria is a lantern—traditionally used in Christmas celebrations in the southwestern U.S.—that typically consists of a candle (or its electric analogue) set in sand inside a paper bag. Luminaria is also broadly used to refer to a similar lantern lit for other occasions, such as memorials or weddings. Both luminarias and luminaria are acceptable plural forms of luminaria. // One of Anna's favorite Christmas Eve traditions is lighting luminaria with her family to line their driveway in a festive display. See the entry > Examples: “A cherished tradition, Las Noches de las Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Garden is a great spectacle. As one of the garden's longest-running events, it invites visitors to wander along trails decorated with thousands of twinkling, hand-lit luminarias.” — Karee Blunt, The Courier-Times (Roxboro, North Carolina), 17 Oct. 2023 Did you know? The tradition of lighting small lanterns on the night (or nights) before Christmas is an old one in what is now New Mexico, dating back to when the region belonged to colonial Spain and later to independent Mexico. Where one lives in New Mexico today, however, often determines what these paper lanterns are called. New Mexicans in the northern part of the state, around Santa Fe, call them farolitos, Spanish for “little lanterns.” Those further south, around Albuquerque, are more likely to call them luminaria (or luminarias), a word that began appearing in English publications around the 1930s, and that is today used more broadly to refer to such lanterns lit for other occasions, such as memorials, weddings, etc. Luminaria comes to English from Spanish, but the word has been around with exactly the same spelling since the days of Late Latin. It ultimately traces to the classical Latin word luminare, meaning “window,” and to lumen, meaning “light.” It is related to other light-bearing words such as luminary and illuminate.

Lydia Becker, former intern with Pegasus Early Music, joins us to discuss the experience of interning for a major arts organization, from the ins-and-outs of everyday business to the more memorable moments that led her toward the work she is doing today. Lydia shares some advice for students looking to intern with major ensembles, and talks about her experience moving from intern to employee for the same institution. Lydia Becker is an innovative violinist who is passionate about building a vibrant audience relationship through historical performance practices, artistic diversity, and effective arts administration. Her quest for authenticity in all areas of life has forged her eclectic career path. Lydia always loved Baroque music, but got swept into the exciting world of historical performance when she first met Christel Thielmann and Paul O'Dette at the Eastman School of Music as an undergraduate violinist. The freedom and creativity allowed in these older performance practices immediately sparked Lydia's passion for exploring new music from the past. Having earned three degrees in Violin Performance and Early Music with high distinction from the Eastman School of Music, Lydia is continuing her graduate studies in Historical Performance at the Juilliard School. Curiosity fuels Lydia's music-making; consequently, she strives for musical excellence in all musical styles and genres. Lydia has performed internationally in numerous festivals and concerts, sharing the stage with renowned artists, including Paul O'Dette, Monica Huggett, and Maxim Vengerov. She is a founding member of the Berwick Fiddle Consort, a historically-informed folk band; Luminaria, a multi-sensory watercolor-harp-violin duet; and the Kenaniah Project, an eclectic jazz-classical-folk chamber ensemble that presents sacred Christian music from a fresh perspective. Lydia is equally skilled as an arts administrator, and recently was the administrative manager for Pegasus Early Music and NYS Baroque for three years. Since 2017, Lydia has served as assistant to the orchestra director at the Boston Early Music Festival summer season, helping to coordinate the orchestra's logistics at one of the largest early music festivals in the world. Lydia is a Catherine Filene Shouse Arts Leadership Program fellow and earned a Certificate in Arts Leadership at the Eastman School of Music. The transcript for this episode can be found here. Its a light week so only a few stories to share on this episode. We start with some release dates including The Cruel King and the Great Hero coming west in March 2022. Also making the trip across the oceans is Maglam Lord, a title we weren't sure was coming or not. Tales of Luminaria releases today but had a slight delay to November 5th so I'll give my impressions next week. I talk a little about the recent partnership between Sega and Microsoft and what it might mean moving forward. In the end I'll give my final thoughts on Tales of Arise since I finally beat the game. Less than a month until TGS 2021, we have the outline of events for the show. I'll go down the list, highlight the big moments, and speculate what we might see. Always the highlight of the JRPG year, let's hope for a great event! We've got news from SMT V about its characters and systems. Demon Gaze EXTRA has a release date, and surprise it's a worldwide one. Final Fantasy titles are coming to Playstation Now as FF XIII hits Xbox Gamepass. I've got first details about a new game coming to PC in Q1 2022: Rise of the Third Power. The retro looking title is another love letter to SNES JRPG's and looks very interesting. Curious what exactly is in Prinny Presents NIS Classics Volume 1? I read a great article from Siliconera all about the two PS2 classics included. Lastly I have two interviews with the teams behind Tales of Luminaria and the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters. Leave us a 5 star review on Apple and I'll read it on an upcoming podcast! In a shocking move, Koei Tecmo has announced its bringing the remasters of Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX to Switch, PC, and iOS worldwide December 9, 2021. After a year of wondering, longtime fans can celebrate the series 25th anniversary with both games this year. I'll let you know everything we learned today, including how you can turn cd's into monsters now. Gamescom is still going on, but really nothing JRPG related was announced. The biggest highlight was Lindsey Stirling's live performance of the Tales of Arise theme, which you can view on our YouTube channel. We had a few other Tales stories, but stick around to the end for my take on the demo after playing it last night. Lots of trailers this week so you want to check them out or wait until our video podcast. I talk about Astria Ascending a bit, Rune Factory as it celebrates 25 years, what Tales of Luminaria really is, and a few figures you might want to save your paycheck for soon. This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Thanksgiving Point was prepared to spend 2020 celebrating its 25th anniversary as one of Utah's largest cultural institutions. Coronavirus changed those plans and Thanksgiving Point has navigated a tight rope of decision-making to protect guests and team members during the pandemic. In fact, as many as 1 in 8 museums may disappear when the pandemic ends. Its president and CEO, Mike Washburn, is here to share some insights. MIKE WASHBURN In March we closed Thanksgiving Point and canceled all events, including the Tulip Festival, which was a tremendously difficult decision. We reopened outdoor venues on May 1 to just one-third capacity for social distancing, following the “Utah Leads Together,” plan, then began opening museums and exhibits on June 12 to extremely limited capacity. While these measures reduced our annual budget from $25 to $14 million, our generous members and community stepped in to help ease this crisis and have been vital sources of support. Moving forward, we're focused on transformative family learning at our venues while following safety guidelines. Soon, we look forward to more days of hosting crowds and over two million guests a year. DEREK MILLER We're glad that Thanksgiving Point has committed members and donors to help this vital community gathering place weather the storm during COVID-19. We'll be looking forward to the lights at Luminaria this holiday season as well. For more details on experiences open and available to the public, visit thanksgivingpoint.org. I'm Derek Miller, and this is Speaking on Business. Originally Aired: August 27, 2020.

Natalie Nichole, singer-songwriter, was born in Lubbock, Texas & raised in San Antonio, Texas. Given the birth name Natalie Nichole Carrizalez she chose to use Natalie Nichole as her stage name when she moved to California January 2016 in spite of going by "NC" or "TheOnlyNC" all her childhood & high school years. Natalie figured it'd be easier to pronounce, spell & remember Natalie Nichole instead of continuing to use her last name Carrizalez. Natalie has been performing ever since she can remember.  At a very young age, she was involved with dancing groups, talent shows, TV Shows, Commercials, and youth organizations such as NYA and HYPE. With NYA (Network for Young Artists), she gained experience throughout San Antonio, TX performing at local rodeos and festivals such as Luminaria. While a part of HYPE, Natalie helped to write songs, danced, and helped educate Texas youth about anti-bullying movements and drug and alcohol abuse prevention. Natalie became homeless shortly after her 22nd birthday for 10months while living in California but that didn't stop her from continuing to work, becoming an extra for more money & still pursuing her dreams! While surviving in L.A. a few CSUN college students asked to do a Documentary-Short on Natalie for their graduating project that'd premiere in Beverly Hills at the WGA Theater; Nominated for Best Documentary & best Director for the film. During this same time Natalie also auditioned for Nick Cannon's #SignMeToNCredible Challenge via Instagram/Youtube/Twitter & she WON!
