DeAnn's award-winning WeCare Diabetes Education Program has helped thousands of people gain the skills to balance their blood sugar levels — and lead longer, healthier, more joyful lives. She has published numerous articles on diabetes and was a regular diabetes care columnist for Retail Pharmacy Management. Her column reached every retail pharmacy in the United States and then some—totaling more than 60,000 pharmacies—and had an estimated 120,000 readers. DeAnn received her formal training from Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy — but her role as a caregiver and wellness crusader began long before that, when her brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, at age 9. As the Immediate Past-President of the National Community Pharmacists Association and Board of Directors member, she is deeply committed to the continued growth and prosperity of independent community pharmacy. DeAnn is a former member of the Florida Board of Pharmacy and is currently serving on advisory boards and committees for Cardinal Health, Samford University, Prescribe Wellness and the NCPA Innovation Center. Pharmacy Podcast - Recap Show of SXSW **********WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SHARE ARE MY PERSONAL OPINIONS (AND MINE ONLY) REGARDING SXSW – THIS PODCAST IS NOT DIRECTLY AFFILIATED WITH, NOR ENDORSED BY SXSW CONFERENCE MANAGEMENT. These are my opinions only as an attendee and mentor of SXSW17. Thanks!************* SXSW HOMEPAGE: https://www.sxsw.com Why this conference was a bucket list item for me: It's a veritable who's who of thought leadership across a WIDE variety of industries— Conference format March 6+ – SXSWedu (which I've been told is a separate conference) March 10-18 – SXSW – wider array of topics and speakers Article on background of SXSW generally: https://www.forbes.com/sites/larryolmsted/2017/03/15/live-from-sxsw-what-you-should-know-about-austins-famous-festival/#7cefa44e4cd3 My top 10 list on attending SX this year: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/sxsw17-my-top-10-list-erin-l-albert-mba-pharmd-jd-pahm?trk=v-feed&lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_profile_view_base_recent_activity_details_all%3BnyMFMpyzPikFJtClEUwiCg%3D%3D Historically began as a music festival, as Austin is the live music capital of the US, if not the world. Grew into other conferences – Interactive, Film, Music and SXSW itself – and this year even beyond that – Flatstock (art festival) and a local business pop up shop SXSW Marketplace (https://www.sxsw.com/exhibitions/sxsw-marketplace/) Speakers this year included: Former VP Joe Biden, Tim Ferriss, James Altucher, Gary Vaynerchuk Corey Booker, Cecile Richards, Adam Grant (author of my favorite book in 2016, Originals) Jenny Blake (of Pivot) And me. ❤ SXSW Interactive has several different tracks within It – Marketing, Design, Coding, Government, Heath, Intelligent Future, Style, Tech industry, and Workplace. -I mentored and spoke here. Under health, although, mentees really wanted to discuss crowdfunding the most with me personally. In addition to mentoring slots, there were also: chats with authors/book readings, panel discussions, and interactive keynotes (Props in to Gary Vaynerchuk here for doing almost nothing but take questions and interact with the audience in a standing room only session.) Things to note if attending the first time: It's overwhelming – you really must have a plan before you step onto Austin soil; otherwise, you get burned out quickly. Prepare to stand in line – The Tim Ferriss session alone was an amazing line that snaked around the convention center – not everyone got in. HOWEVER, one thing I really liked about this year's SX was that they had different levels of badges – those with the highest level or “platinum” badge were given preference to get into the rooms first – which is helpful for keynote sessions in particular. Prices go up – book WELL IN ADVANCE if you can for lodging and rentals. Prepare to learn – take a note pad and take copious notes. The overwhelming-ness of it will make you forget things – try to record what you can and bring it back with you. Now, on to sessions I attended and what I learned: The author book reading sessions – Room 10AB at the convention center on Friday and Saturday was my anchor. My next bucket list item is to get on this roster with one of my own books! Anyway, the first 30 minutes of a session was the author doing a summary or reading of her book, and the second 30 minutes was a book signing down at the bookstore with the author. Authors/Books I saw: Office Politics: Dealing with Conflict at Work – Amy Gallo Pivot: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One – Jenny Blake Atlas Obscura: Exploring the World's Hidden Wonders – Ella Morton Ex-Acute 2017: Affordable Healthcare in America – Josh Luke How to Think Like a Futurist – Amy Webb (her book is entitled, The Signals are Talking Panels in healthcare Hacking Your health: Future or Fail? Hackathons used to develop new tech in healthcare Patient Centric Healthcare – the future of health Music, Pharmacogenomics, AI, and Personalized Medicine helped one many fight and Survive cancer – Bryce Olson The network and people The app – provided people you should try and connect with based upon mutual tags and interests inside the SXSW app Also a beacon feature in the app to show you who is around you in the same room Talking to other attendees – so many had side hustles, entrepreneurial endeavors in addition to their day jobs. While there were many different types of meetups – I didn't see one for healthcare side hustlers, and a couple of people I spoke with in healthcare were at SX, but not for healthcare talks or reasons. I found this fascinating. Best bits I took away from speakers beyond their books: Focus on your own stuff – GaryVee said this before, but he also said this here again – I love this. Don't plan 5 years out – Jenny Blake. In fact, she said it's OK to NOT plan for careers like our parents and their parents had. I found this liberating, and coupled with the fact that many people attending have multiple gigs and side hustles going on, felt good about her saying this. Re-read the book, Blue Zones – Kaiser Permanente doc mentioned this, and I need to go back and read this book again. We need ALL healthcare professionals in on the conversation – a doctor said this in the audience of one of the panel discussions only with healthcare professionals who were other doctors – RIGHT ON, DOCTOR! One size does not fit all for even the same type of cancer these days – cancer is a bunch of different diseases within the umbrella of cancer, and after attending Bryce Olson's talk (totally by accident) I now realize that pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine is absolutely CRITICAL in cancer, and many other diseases. Standards of care just don't cut it in all cases, and it doesn't fit the value based ideas around medicine these days either. If you have other questions about SXSW, I'm happy to try and answer them at twitter: @ErinLAlbert or @pharmacypodcast. Our goals are to get this podcast on the podcast stage at SXSW18 AND I'd like to be in an author session. Don't ask, don't get, so we're posting our wishes here now! :D See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Even though it has been misinterpreted and refuted, I do like President Kennedy's speech ironically here in my hometown (Indianapolis) back in the 1950s, where he shared a definition of the word "Crisis" = Danger + Opportunity, in Chinese. And even though the translation is incorrect, I still would like to think that anytime there is a crisis, there is an element of danger and opportunity within it. Danger and opportunity can lead to amazing things! This is also true of one's career. There's been talk of mergers, layoffs, and restructuring abound in my world of pharmacy and pharmaceuticals, and I don't foresee that tumult ending anytime soon. I still get panicky emails from friends of friends each and every day who lost their jobs, and beg for answers to: "What should I do about this?" When radical change is happening around us at lightening speeds, the best one can do is prepare for the crisis when it comes along. Listen to my chat with Janet Kennedy over at Get Social Health on career development, in addition to many other topics we chat about in these interesting times we live in! So, I wanted to write about 5 steps to take to not entirely insulate yourself from a career crisis, but prepare for it in advance should it ever come your way. My definition of a crisis here in your career is a layoff, company closure, random pink slip, or termination out of the blue. Most of our external lives are out of our control - but the one thing we can control is...our response to the environment around us. Ready for some actionable items around this? What To Do During A Career Crisis: 1) Prepare for it well in advance of a potential career crisis - You need to start saving and growing your FINANCIAL and SOCIAL bank accounts well in advance of any career breakdowns. Financial is the obvious - you need to save salary in a rainy day fund...preferably 6 months worth of expenses coverage, if not a full year or more. (And this is in addition to your retirement savings.) Saving your hard earned dollars for the crisis can give you breathing space to get over the shock of loss and focus on your NEXT great adventure, without your lizard brain being hi-jacked by fear/panic and taking any job that comes along first, which may not be the right job for you. Also, your SOCIAL bank account needs growth and fostering too. You want to build your network when you need it LEAST. That means, network OUTSIDE your company. Go to events and meet new people. Get around people who are NOT like you. Get around people who are SIMILAR to you but who work at different companies. Help others. Givers gain! Help other great people find work when they need it! Start saving your social capital just as you save for your rainy day fund--because again, the last approach you want to take when you have a crisis is to reach out to others who you don't know well and panic around asking them for jobs with no financial or social capital in the bank. That looks unprofessional. 2) Spread out your work - Never put all your career eggs in one basket, especially if you think your career choice is "safe" or "insulated" from economic downturns, and especially if you work for a big company. What I mean by this is make sure you have a side hustle. That could be an additional part time job, service on an association board, a part time entrepreneurial gig of your own (of course, the day job being cool with it), and/or do something outside of your day job on the side. Not only is this good for you, in that it trains your brain in broader ways of thinking and creativity enhancement, but it helps you build skills outside of your company that can be additive to your NEXT career move--whether that's by choice or not. 3) Be aware of what's going on in the wider world around you - If you're spending all your time in your day job at work, and you ONLY work at that day job, this is really not good at all, because if that work goes away, what else do you have? Nothing. I've generally witnessed that the larger the company an employee works for, the less likely the employees are to pay attention to what's going on in the wider world around them. (Not always, but generally.) This means getting savvy with social media. This means watching the news (as mud-slinging as it is). This means going to conferences outside and beyond your comfort zone. I've seen too many times where people get too comfortable working for a large employer for decades and then, when the rug is pulled out from underneath them, they're completely lost. Don't be in that situation. My best example of this is the buggy whip manufacturer. Back in the day, they could have been a fantastic top shelf buggy whip maker - but if they didn't pay any attention to the automakers...being the best buggy whip mfr no longer mattered. Stay relevant. 4) Be ready at a moment's notice for a new adventure - Some families have disaster plans in case of a weather disaster or the power grid going off line. You need to take this strategy with your own career as well. This means keeping your resume up to date at all times. This also means having an awesome and up to date LinkedIn profile (which I'm beginning to think is probably even more important than a resume these days). If you did great work on a project or with someone, ask them for a reference on your Linkedin profile. If someone did something amazing in a project you worked on, GIVE them an awesome reference per bullet 1 above, proactively. This means all the other 3 steps above, and this above all means--keeping an open mind. Always keep one eye open for new career or project adventures. Maybe you don't even need to leave your day job for your next big project or career adventure! But keep your eyes open, and be ready to jump on exciting opportunities when they head your way. 5) The one email you should send - If you did get that termination notice, give yourself a few days to quiet the lizard brain. Then, clean up your resume and LinkedIn profiles per above, and THEN you may send an email to your top 50 social network peers with a copy of your resume, and a request for ideas on what to do next. Tell them you have an open mind and will consider all possibilities. Describe your ideal next gig in a paragraph in that email, and let them put on their thinking caps. Follow up with everyone who responds to you. Stay in front of them. There's some literature out there that supports using your 2nd degree connections for optimal job opportunities here. Most of all, don't panic. Keep calm and carry on. And, if you did the previous 4 steps in advance, you'll be miles ahead of others still back panicking with their pink slips in hand. There. Don't panic. Prepare. With these 5 steps, start planting the seeds NOW. Because one day the career crisis may come...will you be ready for it? Blair Green Thielemier, PharmD interviews Michael Haulsee, PharmD. PAYSA Health Services Pharmacists Assuring Your Safe Access Michael is CEO and Co-founder of PAYSA Health Services. It has always been his vision to create a sustainable ecosystem for healthcare where the geographical borders would cease to exist for quality healthcare access. As technology grows and advanced medical techniques are being developed and practiced across the globe, the concept of the international patient is being more and more relevant. According to him, there should be more connectivity between quality healthcare and the patient. At the same time there must be 100% transparency on quality and cost parameters so the patient makes an educated decision. It was this noble notion and his years of experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry that led to the formation of PAYSA Health Services (PHS), where any patient seeking the best care can look for options and form a well informed decision about seeking treatment in a foreign country. PAYSA Health Services facilitates the patient in the process and acts as an end to end support system for them. From his early days as a clinical pharmacist to international consultant, Dr. Haulsee has developed a keen understanding of the complicated dynamics that can impact effective business. His unique method to empower a client encourages solution development that leads to success. Dr. Haulsee's experience is gained through his involvement within many facets of the pharmaceutical industry; manufacturing to wholesale to retail. Dr. Haulsee has owned pharmacy businesses worldwide, developed pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, assisted in the successful formation of international specialty pharmacies, and has become keenly knowledgeable of foreign cultural and regulatory differences. He is also CEO and Founder of TCS Coaching and Business Consulting, a consultancy that provides strategic operational, marketing, and organizational support to individuals and businesses within the specialty pharmacy and pharmaceutical industries. Dr. Haulsee holds a Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University and BS in Biology from East Tennessee University. Dr. Haulsee proudly holds prestigious memberships to IACP (International Association of Compounding Pharmacists), PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America), FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation), Toastmaster Competent Communicator, and is certified member with Napoleon Hill Leadership and Gazelles Coaching. 5 Roads into Loving Your Retail Pharmacy Career PART 2: Amy Lenell, PharmD, CLC Pharmacy Manager, Walgreens Amy's focus is to bring the highest level of care to patients in the community practice setting, to promote health and wellness in her community and to enhance the education of future pharmacists. 2. Get out of the fishbowl – Just like Hazel Walker described on the Pharmacy Podcast, you need to build a network inside the profession of pharmacy and OUTSIDE. That INCLUDES networking in your local community, with the patients you serve. My first couple of pharmacy experiences had me surrounded by glass around the pharmacy – so we used to joke that sometimes, we needed to “get out of the fishbowl.” Examples of this: could you get out into the community and discover nursing homes that need adherence packaging for their patients that you could help with? Is there an acute facility in a rural setting that could use your pharmacy's help? Do you have a hospice program in your community you could partner with? If you're the new kid on the block, why not get out and say hi to the doctors in your local community? Get out of the fishbowl and investigate! -Article on lactation: http://jhl.sagepub.com/content/early/2015/03/31/0890334415579418.abstract -List of pharmacy certifications: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KysSGcQQEcC9RHzQ5-IyBT-Z5Qk4dg2v9g4fGXUHUC4/edit?usp=sharing -Amy Lenell is @AmyLenell on twitter.
