In this episode of The Timeout, Dwyane Wade, D Wright, Chris Johnson, and Natalie Nakase tap in for a real conversation on what it takes to rise in the game—on the court and beyond. Coach Nakase breaks down her journey from cutting film to coaching pros, sharing how she earns trust, builds culture, and keeps her squad ready for the moment. The crew gets into player development, past the flashy highlights and into the real work. Chris Johnson unpacks the off-camera grind, from court mapping to daily habits, while D Wright talks about the patience, pressure, and growth that shaped his 12-year NBA career. From leadership to mindset to staying ready when it’s not your turn yet, they talk about the parts of the game you don’t always see—but that make all the difference. Whether you’re hooping, coaching, or just trying to level up, this episode’s got something for you. Music Credit: Khari Mateen. Today we're discussing the research behind redshirting - delaying kindergarten or school entry for a year. This seems to be an increasingly popular trend for giving your child a competitive advantage. The growing popularity of redshirting may have been started by Malcolm Gladwell's bestselling book, Outliers, which claims that a child being relatively older than their peers provides an advantage. But what does the research say?------Sign up for the Parenting Translator Substack, and follow along on Instagram.Parenting Translator is hosted by Dr. Cara Goodwin and is produced by Earfluence.Dr. Cara Goodwin, PhD, is a child psychologist and mother to three children who "translates" research on parenting and child development into information that is accurate, relevant, and useful to parents.

“Redshirting” or delaying enrolling your child into Kinder (or 1st grade if you chose to skip Kinder) and keeping your child back a year is a question I get asked about frequently. There's a lot of anxiety and stress about the decision to redshirt or not red shirt, and to be honest there's a whole bunch of controversy and drama about it too. So I figured I'd go ahead and chat about it in this week's Mudroom. I get asked a lot about it because I made the decision to red-shirt my oldest son, which I've openly talked about before. He's currently getting ready to step into the exciting world of being a 3rd grader but would have been going into 4th grade. And I didn't make that decision lightly. There's a whole bunch of reasons why you might choose to hold your child back a grade and a whole bunch of reasons why you might decide against it. In this episode I'm not going to try and convince you to do one or the other. But I will share my experience and reasons for red-shirting my oldest and some things you might want to consider when making a decision of your own. BTW- If you are thinking this over, know that there are tons of factors that come into play with this decision, including what you're legally allowed to do. I'm not throwing out any legal advice whatsoever (so, please for the love of everything good don't take it as legal advice) but I will also share the general steps I took to make sure I didn't land myself in any trouble. Cause I know finding the information can be a little overwhelming. This month's Q&A episode begins with a question about Redshirting (postponing entrance into kindergarten to allow extra time for social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth). This is a controversial topic because parents can be accused of using it to give their kids an advantage, but I explain why it might actually be best to hold a child back, particularly if their birthday is close to the cutoff date. Sending kids too early can set them on a path of feeling like they're always behind throughout their school career, not only academically, but emotionally and physically as well. I also tackle a question about healthy eating habits and the murky waters of using food as a reward. I break down why I am 100% against this practice as it creates unhealthy relationships with food, and I discuss why food should not be tied to emotions or power struggles with your kid. Finally, I look at using distractions during a tantrum - when it's good, when it's bad. There's a window of opportunity when you can successfully distract your child with a change in scenery or deep breathing exercises, but if they're past that point and you find yourself in “Juggling Fire and Spinning Plates” territory, it's actually healthy to let kids experience their full range of emotions so that they can learn the boundaries of what's acceptable. After all, kids need to be an asshole before they can learn how to not be an asshole. As always, I love hearing your questions and truly appreciate your patronage. Thank you for listening and keep your questions coming! The Finer Details of This Episode: Redshirting is the practice of postponing entrance into Kindergarten of age-eligible children, to allow extra time for social, emotional, intellectual or physical growth Redshirting is a controversial practice because some parents are accused of using it to give their kids an advantage Kindergarten has a much more challenging curriculum today, and is much more competitive Sending your child to Kindergarten early could set them up to always feel behind the other children as time goes on, not only academically, but physically and emotionally as well 100% against using food as a reward or punishment, as this will create a very unhealthy relationship with food moving forward Do not use dessert as currency to get your child to do expected behavior (eat a healthy dinner, use the potty) If you use food as a reward, it will often escalate to the child asking for more before they comply Try to view your child's eating habits through a daily lens, not a meal lens - did they get a fair amount of protein, carbohydrates, and nutrients throughout the day versus in that one sitting? Make sure you're providing age appropriate food and serving sizes so your child is not overwhelmed Create a family meal culture of not having seconds until your plate is clear, knowing you've given them an appropriate amount of protein and vegetables Treats should not be associated with any rewards - it's okay to just have a treat Food should not be tied to emotions or power struggles as this can lead to picky eating or even body image issues later in life “Go To Your Room” strategy helps children learn what self-regulates them The arc of a typical toddler tantrum includes a window of opportunity where you can distract them by going outside, watching a movie, doing deep breathing Kids need to have tantrums and experience the full range of their emotions to learn boundaries of what's acceptable and what's not Trying to fix the feeling versus being the calm, centered parent to guide them back into their body Links: Jamie's Homepage - http://www.jamieglowacki.com/ Oh Crap! Kindergarten is more like what you probably experienced in first or second grade.” “Ten months at that age can make such a huge difference academically.” “If your kid is on the cusp, I say just keep them in pre-K another year or keep them home for another year. The markers may be okay for kindergarten, but you’ve got to think ahead.” “I think it’s better to give your kid the advantage. I think it's better for them to be a little bit older than a little bit younger, because the younger it's like - I just played catch up my whole life, my whole school career I just felt like I was playing catch up.” “It's so funny how we all knew everything before we actually had kids, but once you're in the trenches it's a totally different story.” “I am one hundred percent in the camp of food should not be a reward or a punishment. I think that's a quick way to set up a very unhealthy relationship with our kids and food.” “I think of food in these instances, like dessert in particular, like allowances… I think you should get an allowance to learn money management. I don't think it should be tied to chores. I don't think it should be a bribery system. I think kids need to learn money management, and need to learn how to save and how to accumulate and what to do with the money. And I think it needs to be not tied to chores, because chores are not - I don't pay for chores, just like I don't pay you to eat a good dinner.” “If you're going to have dessert, I don't think it should be tied to the amount they eat at dinner.” “That's one of my issues again with rewards across the board is for rewards to be effective, they sort of have to escalate.” “If your child's eating pretty well, why do they have to have that last bite of meat? Why is it, Two more bites of meat? Why is that a line in the sand?” “When we get down to, One more bite, that's where power struggles start.” “The other thing, if you recall from the sugar episode, is that carbs are fast acting energy, so the glucose hits the bloodstream and you're more likely to get behavioral or mood stuff going on when your child has super rich carbohydrates without the protein or the fat.” “When it comes to treats, I think it's really good - treats should not be associated with any rewards, not like, Oh my god, you had such a great day at school! Let's go get an ice cream.” “I always think it's best to take food out of emotions. I always think dinnertime shouldn’t be struggling.” “One of my big things is to Go To Your Room strategy as opposed to a time out.” “One of our misconceptions as parents is that we can help another human self-regulate, and we really can't. We can hold space for them while they are self-regulating, but we can't help somebody self-regulate.” “You're not shutting down the emotion. It allows your child to run the track of whatever they’re on. And so one of the things I'm finding in current parenting is an eagerness to fix any high emotion and distract the child away from it, which is okay sometimes, but we're not allowing the child their full experience of the emotions.” “As the typical tantrum is starting to arc up, there's a window of opportunity where you can distract.” “You have to take shit to the outer boundaries to know where the inner boundary is… Remember that all these meltdowns - I know they suck, I know they're inconvenient, but they're also important to your child’s development and they have to stretch their emotions.” Links: Jamie’s Homepage - http://www.jamieglowacki.com/ Oh Crap! Parents - worried about their child's lack of maturity or ability to 'fit in' in a classroom environment - often ask me whether they should hold their child back a year before entering kindergarten or first grade. In this episode I review the origins of the redshirting phenomenon (which lie in Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, and which statisticians say contained some seriously dodgy math), what it means for your individual child, as well as for the rest of the children in the class so you can make an informed decision. Jump to highlights: (01:00) Malcolm Gladwell's anecdote about the Junior League Medicine Hat Tigers and Vancouver Giants ice hockey teams that initiated the redshirting craze (02:56) Ability grouping is done in early childhood, just like in sports (03:59) Parents holding their children back from kindergarten came to be referred to as redshirting (10:20) How common is redshirting? (11:04) Boys are redshirted at a ratio of 2:1 compared to girls (12:18) The maturationist approach of why to redshirt (13:05) State support and agenda for redshirting (15:10) Teachers tendency to view a maturationist view of development. (17:16) The Maturation Hypothesis (17:36) Parents redshirt their children to give their child an advantage (20:34) Redshirting as a way to give boys age and size advantage and avoid getting bullied (27:28) Making a judgement call into what benefits mean with regards to the body of research on redshirting (29:24) The evidence of whether redshirting is beneficial (35:19) Misdiagnosis of ADHD caused by relative maturity (37:56) A year outside of school reduces the likelihood that children receive timely identifications of learning difficulties (38:35) Students with speech impairments may actually benefit from redshirting (39:22) Redshirted students may have more behavioral problems in high school (46:04) Children from higher socioeconomic status are more likely to perform well in tests in kindergarten (48:19) It’s possible that the way the teacher sees the child is what helps the child because of Labelling Theory (49:46) Opportunity hoarding associated with middle-class, white parents. (52:01) Is kindergarten truly the new first grade? (56:06) Advocating for Developmentally Appropriate Practice or DAP (57:35) Almost everyone agrees that retention has negative impacts on children (58:55) Accumulative Advantage (01:00:07) Malcolm Gladwell’s proposed solution to homogenize and my thoughts on it (01:02:32) Summary (01:04:56) Why I think asking "should I redshirt my child" is the wrong question Books and Resources: https://www.amazon.com/Outliers-Story-Success-Malcolm-Gladwell/dp/0316017930 (Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell) https://yourparentingmojo.com/subscribe/ (13 Reasons Why Your Child Won’t Listen to You and What to do About Each One) https://www.amazon.com/School-Can-Wait-Raymond-Moore/dp/0842513140 (School Can Wait, by Raymond S. We sat down with Jonathan Maccoll, head coach of the swimming and diving program at Rutgers University. SwimSwam reported last week that Rutgers would be redshirting a significant portion of its team this year, and Maccooll was kind enough to explain the reasoning behind this. In short, because things are ever-changing with the COVID-19 pandemic, Maccoll says every athlete's situation is different and the decision to redshirt this season is extremely fluid for whether it makes sense for that athlete or not. For this episode I am joined by South Dakota St. basketball legend Mike Daum. Mike was a star for the Jackrabbits in Brookings but it didn't start out that way. Coming from a town of 2,500 people in western Nebraska, Mike learned the game from his mom (Michele), who was a standout player herself at the University of Wyoming. Mike redshirted his freshman year at SDSU. For his redshirt freshman season, Mike came off the bench and was able to earn 6th Man of the Year for the Summit League that season. The Jackrabbits then had a coaching change and through that change and Mike's hard work he developed into a 3-time Summit League Player of the Year. Mike's teams made the NCAA tournament three times during his tenure, but fell short in a devastating loss his senior season in a first round upset in the Summit League tournament. Mike developed into one of the best players ever at SDSU and is the 7th all-time leading scorer in the history of men's college basketball scoring over 3,000 points. With all of those accolades Mike went undrafted but has fulfilled his dream of playing professional basketball overseas in Spain. Mike continues to work at his game in hopes of one day achieving the goal of playing in the NBA. With an August birthday, my son met the age cutoff for kindergarten when he was 5. But he wasn’t ready in many regards — and neither was I. They say “mama knows best,” and in this situation that couldn’t be more true. Yet, unlike a lot of other parents, I didn’t force my son to be a 6-year-old kindergartner because I wanted him to be the oldest, smartest, or biggest in his class.

Many parents choose to wait an extra year before enrolling a child in elementary school, a practice known as redshirting. Does this practice benefit the children who are held back? This week, Paul E. Peterson talks with Phillip Cook of Duke University, the co-author of a new study on the impact of delayed entry on student achievement. The paper, "The School-Entry-Age Rule Affects Redshirting Patterns and Resulting Disparities in Achievement," is co-written with Songman Kang. https://www.nber.org/papers/w24492.pdf
Jarom Jordan and Jason Shepherd discuss how Zayne Anderson will be Redshirting for the remainder of the season, Zach Wilson Expectations, Cole Mcdonald starting as Hawaii's QB, and Jimmer getting lots of buckets.
Mark and Jason aren't done over-reacting although Jason apologizes for offending practically everyone with his bold top 4 in Week 1.
Talk about the Cavs and how they have to gell before they are unfairly criticized. As well as talk about NBA team making there top draft picks being placed on IR to give them a extra Rookie year.
Today, I’m talking about redshirting. You may know the term from college sports, where athletes can be redshirted for a year, keeping them out of the game but giving them an extra year of eligibility. Kindergarten redshirting is a similar concept, giving kids an extra year beyond their eligibility before enrolling them. I’ll confess, I personally cringe at the term because I think it conveys—to some – the idea that kids are being held back to give them an advantage at sports. Which, arguably, some are. But the reasons why parents give their kids an extra year before starting kindergarten reach much beyond that. Today, I’m joined by my friend, Allison Mac Donald, who writes at No Time for Flash Cards. She’s a teacher, a book author, a graduate student, a marathoner, and a mom to two rad kids. She and I are chatting today about why some parents choose to give their kids an extra year, what that means from a systems perspective, what factors play into the decision from a personal perspective, and some of the other options parents may not have considered. I have a lot of parents ask me about my opinion about kindergarten redshirting, and –like many parenting dilemmas--- it just doesn’t have an easy, clean answer. So I’m glad Allie’s here to help me sort through the information. (A quick listener note: The audio equipment wasn’t functioning properly during this recording, so the quality isn’t what I’d like it to be. But the conversation was so good, I didn’t want to scrap it. While I hope future recordings meet higher expectations, I think you’ll agree this one is worth tolerating the imperfections!)

Should children be held back an extra year before starting Kindergarten? In a world where Kindergarten is the new 2nd Grade, will the "gift of time" help children to grow physically, emotionally and cognitively to meet increased demands and stress? Listen in on a conversation with parents of Summer-birthday boys and teachers who have a perspective on both sides of this issue. At the table with Lindsey, Janie and Martina
Many parents opt to "redshirt" or delay their child's entrance into kindergarten. This practice is generally seen as beneficial to a child's success in school, but how does it impact their overall happiness later in life? In this episode, I interview Dr. Suzanne Jones, who studied the perceived life satisfaction of adolescent boys who were redshirted at kindergarten compared with those who could have been, but were not.

On Our Mind: iWork ‘09 Update- ePub creation is now possible. Listeners: From the Twitterverse: Advisory: My kids like the 'snowball fight'. Everyone writes something about themselves on a piece of white paper but they don't name it. Then they scrunch the paper into a ball and on the teacher's signal a snowball fight ensues. After everyone's had the chance to throw a lot of paper around ( a few minutes) another signal announces the end of the 'fight'. Each student picks up the snowball closest to them and takes turns to read out the info and maybe guess who it belongs to.
