The human brain isn't actually a muscle, as a lot of people think. But nevertheless we still need to give it exercise to keep it healthy.  While you can go to the gym to work out the muscles in your body, the equivalent for the brain is training and stimulating something called "brain plasticity”. Verywellmind.com says that plasticity “refers to the brain's malleability or ability to change”. This month is Mental Health Awareness Month, and as SelfWork has been named one of the ten top podcasts for depression by VeryWellMind for 2023 – I wanted to focus on just that. Depression. I'm pulling from a talk by Dr. Michael Yapko, an expert on depression, as he lists the five most common mental mistakes that people struggling with depression tend to make – those mistakes can cause depression to be increased, and can start a negative spiral that, given the right circumstances, could lead to depression or worsen it. But, as I heard Michele Obama say to a group of young women the other day, “You become what you practice being.” I couldn't agree more. So today we'll talk about the habit of rumination. What's that? It's when you have one thought – a negative thought or a string of thoughts – that repeat themselves over and over again. I've heard it called a negative spiral or “letting myself drown in the past.” We'll compare it to the much healthier habit of self-reflection which isn't solely a "mental" practice, but also one that can blend in emotional feelings and dynamics. Maybe you do have feelings that still need to be worked through; rumination will probably not lead you there, whereas self-reflection just might. I've long been fascinated by the connections between our minds and our bodies, so much so that I wrote my dissertation (the original research you must complete before they give you a Ph.D.) on pseudoseizures. What are those? They look like actual seizures -  which are bursts of uncontrolled electrical activity between neurons that can cause all kinds of movements and abnormalities in muscle tone, sensations, or states of awareness. But they're not.  Pseudoseizures are seizure-like activity that's apparently caused by emotional/psychological factors. So today we're focusing on the mind/body interaction – how your brain processes physical and emotional pain – a brief touch on what are called somatic disorders -  but what I want to focus on how your body might be expressing the pain or trauma you've experienced in your life. It's an intriguing topic and one I hope you'll enjoy. This could be something called “munchausen's syndrome by proxy” which is a very complicated dynamic – but it might also be that this daughter's mom has been part of her trauma. You can totally hack into other people's heads. It sounds dastardly, right? But you can tweak other people's memories. On Mind Hacks, Heather Fishel cites the work of Dr. Jon Lieff and writes: “Once an event occurs and time moves on, it becomes a part of your memory. Each time you recall that event and its details—smells, sounds, details, and so on—you're not, in fact, remembering the original moment. Instead, you're recalling the last time you remembered that memory.” But it's more than that. We tweak those memories to make better stories: Fishel says: “Wired writer Jonah Lehrer points out, human nature makes us love stories, and the more exciting and engaging a story is, the more we'll want to share it. As a result, when we recount our memories both internally and to others, we ignore any facts that don't suit the plot. Our minds allow us to toss aside any information that we dislike, replacing truth with pure fiction. Why? We simply want to fit in, and unless we change what we remember, our stories will suck.” We will tweak our own memories so we don't look dumb, so we fit in, so we tell a better story, and we usually don't even realize that we're doing it. And sometimes we have totally false memories. What is a false memory? According to VeryWellMind, false memories “are misremembered, distorted, or fabricated recollections of past events. Such memories can be trivial, such as mistakenly remembering where you put your car keys, but they can also be much more serious.” The big time consequences of false memories are the stuff of novels and tv shows: false convictions, financial loss, lawsuits, children dying in heated, locked cars. But it is also a smaller scale thing. You are sure you left your cell phone on the desk. It is not on the desk. It is on the table. You have to wonder how many poltergeist cases are rooted in false memories, right? You think you shut the closet door, but the closet door is open. You are positive you locked the door. The door is unlocked. You think you saw Bigfoot when you were six, but did you really, Carrie? Ahem. I'm the first to admit that I'm no longer sure. Verywellmind has three strategies culled from researchers to help deal with false memories, which we are quoting here. Use imagery: Researchers have found that when people use imagery to create a visual representation of information, their memory for that information is better and less susceptible to false memories.10Search your memory: Experts also suggest that selectively searching memory for mistakes and falsehoods can sometimes be helpful.11Evaluate and corroborate memories: If you find a memory that you aren't sure about, evaluating it based on your expectations and then collaborating it using other people's recollections or other historical data can help verify or disprove it.11 But what's really wild is that psychiatrists like Elizabeth Loftus have found that there's a misinformation effect with memories. So, if you witness or experience an event and then talk about it, are questioned about it in a leading way, view tweets or news stories, or are exposed to the wrong information repeatedly? It can change your memory of that same event. Novelists can use this to help develop plots for novels. Mystery writers do it all the time making a detective call out the inconsistency in a witnesses' testimony, and sometimes in real life and novels people confess to a crime because of a false memory, believing they have committed a crime even though they haven't. But people can do this to each other too, as Fishel writes: “Try lying to them in a different way: tell them they didn't complete a task that they, in fact, did. For example, if your roommate can't seem to understand that doors need to be locked when leaving home, point out the unlocked door every single time you leave. Do this repeatedly over time, and your roommate will start double-checking and questioning himself every time he leaves home. "Did I lock the door? Did I completely forget?" What are the ethics here? Some people believe that this can be a force for good. But is controlling another person ever a force for good? It's like gaslighting but tweaked, right? So, use this knowledge wisely, friends. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Only manipulate your humans for good. You can totally hack into other people's heads. It sounds dastardly, right? But you can tweak other people's memories. On Mind Hacks, Heather Fishel cites the work of Dr. Jon Lieff and writes: “Once an event occurs and time moves on, it becomes a part of your memory. Each time you recall that event and its details—smells, sounds, details, and so on—you're not, in fact, remembering the original moment. Instead, you're recalling the last time you remembered that memory.” But it's more than that. We tweak those memories to make better stories: Fishel says: “Wired writer Jonah Lehrer points out, human nature makes us love stories, and the more exciting and engaging a story is, the more we'll want to share it. As a result, when we recount our memories both internally and to others, we ignore any facts that don't suit the plot. Our minds allow us to toss aside any information that we dislike, replacing truth with pure fiction. Why? We simply want to fit in, and unless we change what we remember, our stories will suck.” We will tweak our own memories so we don't look dumb, so we fit in, so we tell a better story, and we usually don't even realize that we're doing it. And sometimes we have totally false memories. What is a false memory? According to VeryWellMind, false memories “are misremembered, distorted, or fabricated recollections of past events. Such memories can be trivial, such as mistakenly remembering where you put your car keys, but they can also be much more serious.” The big time consequences of false memories are the stuff of novels and tv shows: false convictions, financial loss, lawsuits, children dying in heated, locked cars. But it is also a smaller scale thing. You are sure you left your cell phone on the desk. It is not on the desk. It is on the table. You have to wonder how many poltergeist cases are rooted in false memories, right? You think you shut the closet door, but the closet door is open. You are positive you locked the door. Somewhere around 5,000 BC, metal objects were used as money.  And then around 700 BC, a group called the Lydians were the first in the Western world to make coins that were used as money. Not long after that, countries started to make their own coins and give them certain values. That way people could compare the cost of items or services that people wanted. China was the first country to introduce paper money. Paper money became more common by 960 AD. We still rely on paper money and coins for much of our day-to-day spending and purchasing. But we also rely heavily on a cashless society. Credit cards, loans, and now thanks to our digital world – Venmo, online spending using passwords that access our financial accounts without anything physical changing hands. And, of course, crypto. We're fast moving into an almost totally cashless world.  And it seems to be happening at the speed of light. Adam Carroll is an author and a speaker on the subject of personal finance. David drops by the crabshed to talk with me about our shared experiences in school, working in dangerous environments, and the possibility of undiagnosed cognitive and psychiatric issues. We go into the nuts and bolts of working in the construction field, with an emphasis on roofing, a job both of us have done. We also talk about David's struggles in school, his possible dyslexia, the back injury that left him stuck in a brace and unable to compete in the sports that he loved. Friends, sometimes your body is putting out a message that you might not want out there. What am I talking about? Well, here we go. Shaun is a big, tall, broad-shouldered, thin-lipped man with large eyes and a large presence. When he crosses those strong forearms across his trunk and stands against a wall at a party, he is definitely sending a message to everyone glancing his way. And what's that message? Go away. Carrie is a short, buxom woman who tends to hug her purse to her chest whenever she's sitting down at a restaurant or at a poker table. She's definitely sending a message too. And what's that message? Carrie is super insecure about everything and she's clutching her purse like a baby blanket. Neither of these are really the messages we intend to send. Shaun is just trying (usually) not to take up too much room. Carrie's trying to hide her chest because that's what she's mostly insecure about. It's hard when people stare at your breasts all the time. But the point here is that we aren't always cognizant of the messages that our bodies are putting out. We can all remember that a closed body language often means that we're telling people nonverbally that we're hostile or anxious. An open body language often means that we're telling people we're open and friendly. Knowing how you move in space, how you take up space (or don't), is really helpful in understanding the impressions you give to people and the impressions others give to you, too. When this is someone's primary love language, they enjoy kind words and encouragement. Quality Time - For those who identify with quality time as their love language, love and affection are expressed through undivided attention. This means putting down the cell phone, turning off the tablet, making eye contact, and actively listening. Physical Touch - A person with this love language feels loved through physical affection. Consequently, understanding those differences can make a serious impact on your relationship. According to Dr. Chapman, this exercise is one of the simplest ways to improve your relationships. Here are some ways that understanding love languages can improve your relationship: Promotes selflessness - When you are committed to learning someone else's love language, you are focused on their needs rather than your own. Creates empathy - As someone learns more about how their partner experiences love, they learn to empathize with them. Maintains intimacy - If couples regularly talk about what keeps their love tanks full, this creates more understanding in their relationship. Aids personal growth - When someone is focused on something or someone outside of themselves, it can lead to personal growth. Shares love in meaningful ways - When couples start speaking one another's love language, the things they do for their partners not only become more intentional but also become more meaningful. It's not a feeling. The “in love” feeling wears off after about 2 years. It's an attitude to love someone. “I want to do anything I can to enrich your life.” There is a thought process and intention behind it. Keys to being a better listener: Start with the intention to understand THEIR perspective Do not interrupt the other person Wait until they are completely done speaking How to earn back trust? I believe that there is always an opportunity to have fun and that things are more enjoyable when we look up and play together! Kids Car Game - Pattern ReplicationI've got a brand new game for us that's going to test your memory. Let's see just how well you can repeat a given pattern. I'm calling this game Repeat After Me. We will play a few different rounds where I'll give you a pattern and you'll repeat it back. It might be words. It might be sounds. It might be numbers. It might be claps or stomps! You'll have to pay close attention so you can get it right. Also, try to do it exactly as I do. If I clap softly, you clap softly. Here's an example. If I say, “Apple Pie. Pumpkin Bread. Bonfire. Fried Turkey. Gobble Gobble” then you would say, “Apple Pie. Pumpkin Bread. Bonfire. Fried Turkey. Gobble Gobble” Easy, right? You can tell that I've got Thanksgiving on my mind! I think this was one of my favorite games! Thank you so much for playing along! You can play this game anywhere. The next time you're out and about and need an activity to pass the time, play this game with your friends and take turns making up the patterns! Talking about Gratitude with Kids This episode is airing the week before Thanksgiving. This is one of the most special times of the year! You've got a break from school coming, you're making your Christmas lists, maybe your family is like mine and you've already got your Christmas decorations out! With all the excitement of December coming, I want to encourage you to not miss out on the joy and the meaning of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is all about gratitude. Gratitude is being thankful for the things that you have - a place to live, food on the table, clothes to wear. How can you show gratitude to the people you love? What are some things you can do or say?Can you think of something right now? Say it out loud! Gratitude also comes out in our attitude. When you think about what you are grateful for, it is an instant mood lifter! The next time you feel angry or sad, think about the things you are most grateful for. List them out in your mind or on a piece of paper. Just see what happens! You can even make a game out of it! Try to see how many things you can say that you are grateful for! First we'll touch on the huge difference between codependence and interdependence, with the latter being so important in the development of trust and cooperation. Then we'll move onto the issue of hanging on to your sense of "being you" while in a relationship. You certainly don't do that in a codependent relationship but you can in an interdependent one. And to make it even more accessible, I've broken down this whole solid sense of self concept into five components. Know what you value about yourself - your strengths - and claim these competencies with humility. Use your voice to state what you think , what you expect and what you want -  and then to compromise. Expect others to respect your boundaries. Take responsibility for your own vulnerabilities and the impact they might have on others. Seek relationships where you have the opportunity to learn to trust and to be trusted. The listener voicemail is a painful one to hear. And difficult because I don't have  a really great answer. I can certainly hear how the listener is watching someone he loves emotionally suffer – yet the situation he describes doesn't seem to be one he can control. When I was a kid, I went to a Presbyterian church every Sunday and grew up there. Sunday School, church, youth group – the whole program. That's not the subject for this episode, however. The topic today is self-forgiveness. Why did I bring up my church memories? Because I was very thoughtful about the whole thing, and remember asking my mother this question: “How can I hear me knocking on God's door?” This innocent question was based on the scripture, “Seek and ye shall find. Knock and the door will be opened to you.”  I was curious about just how I was going to know that door was opening if I couldn't even hear myself knock. I now realize our own beliefs are found in our inner mind and heart – we “know” them, but they aren't concrete. We “hear” them inside our own thoughts and feelings. We feel and know love. I have been following Nicole Smith Levay for some time and I am so excited for this conversation with her about Self Love and Living Authentically! Major life transitions always send us in a new direction. When Nicole suffered from chronic pain, she discovered her scoliosis would put an end to her dancing career. But her love for yoga and meditation paired with her body awareness from dancing led her to eventually acquire a Masters in Somatic Psychology. What is Somatics or Somatic Exeriencing? Much like yoga, mediation, dance or any movement practice, somatics makes up aware of our mind body spirit access points. While some people have more access at certain points, the important thing is to reestablish the connection between the three. "Somatic therapy incorporates body-oriented modalities such as dance, breathwork, and meditation to support patients through their healing journeys. In addition, somatic experiencing therapy sessions include talk therapy and mind-body exercises. Nicole recently shared about an experiment in authenticity on social media, creating a separate account to practice sharing more openly without fear of judgement. "I went into those outcasted parts for me and went for it, and it was so much fun. I had been shutting down parts of myself because I thought - this isn't professional - and now it's all coming back." The first thing Nicole posted on the separate account was a picture of her body, something that so many of are fearful of. "There's this mind body split in our society. Body is only seen as objectified and for the soul purpose of procreation or sexual stimulation. What can we explore in this gray area?" Introduction  Very autobiographical today, I'm going to tell you a lot about me and the mistakes I've made and how those mistakes have brought me to do this episode.   I don't really like talking about myself -- not a lot of autobiographical material in previous episodes I especially don't like talking about myself all by myself in my little studio -- not being interviewed by a host -- the really Competent part of me thinks it's a little weird to be sharing details of my life and my struggles and my mistakes, not knowing who is listening because I haven't met most of you, those of you who are my listeners.  I've checked in with the different parts of me and they are all good with it, I have at least grudging acceptance of the idea.   I'm clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski and I am here with you, to be your host and guide.   This podcast is called Interior Integration for Catholics, and it is part of Souls and Hearts our online outreach at soulsandhearts.com  which is all about shoring up our natural foundation for the Catholic spiritual life, all about overcoming psychological obstacles to being loved and to loving God and neighbor and ourselves.  We're getting into that much more deeply now.   This is episode 71, released on June 7, 2021, entitled A New and Better Way of Understanding Myself and Others.  -- Beginning a brief series of episodes that takes the great insights of Internal Family Systems approaches to understanding the human person on a natural level, and reconciles them with the eternal truths of the Catholic faith.   The Great Journey I could be considered "Highly successful" as a child and adolescent -- 4.0 GPA in High School, Valedictorian, Varsity letters in Track and Cross Country, I acted in high school musicals and plays, excelled in competitive solo-acting, was on the chess team, active in student government and I was a pretty good shot on the local pistol team --  I had a lot going for me.  I continued that success from Northwestern University, graduating with honors, traveling the world, living in Seville, Spain for a year, romping around Mexico one summer.   1991 -- brought to my knees -- 22 years old, just left a high-demand group Catholic group -- strong sense of having been manipulated and used, exploited.   Trying to figure out my own experience -- what just happened?  Why so many contradictory thoughts and feelings?  What was going on.   Either I made a mistake in joining that group or I made a mistake in leaving it.   Existential crisis -- A leader of the group told me that the founder once said that "he wouldn't give a nickel for the soul of any son who abandons his vocation the group."  For the true believer, there was no viable way out. Common reason for getting into psychology - there's something to the meme.   My models were not sufficient.  I was not satisfied with superficial reasons For why I felt the ways I did  For why I thought the ways I thought  For why I acted the ways I did.   In 1993, Began a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology -- the best that psychology had to offer.   The Hunt for a Unitary Personality We all want to understand ourselves 4 temperaments -- Encyclopedia Britannica:  Humoral theories:  2500 years ago.  Perhaps the oldest personality theory known is contained in the cosmological writings of the Greek philosopher and physiologist Empedocles and in related speculations of the physician Hippocrates. Empedocles' cosmic elements—air (with its associated qualities, warm and moist), earth (cold and dry), fire (warm and dry), and water (cold and moist)—were related to health and corresponded (in the above order) to Hippocrates' physical humours, which were associated with variations in temperament: blood (sanguine temperament), black bile (melancholic), yellow bile (choleric), and phlegm (phlegmatic). This theory, with its view that body chemistry determines temperament, has survived in some form for more than 2,500 years. According to these early theorists, emotional stability as well as general health depend on an appropriate balance among the four bodily humours; an excess of one may produce a particular bodily illness or an exaggerated personality trait. Thus, a person with an excess of blood would be expected to have a sanguine temperament—that is, to be optimistic, enthusiastic, and excitable. Too much black bile (dark blood perhaps mixed with other secretions) was believed to produce a melancholic temperament. An oversupply of yellow bile (secreted by the liver) would result in anger, irritability, and a “jaundiced” view of life. It is believed that personality arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life.  But DSM-5, PDM -- Borderline Personality Disorder -- not stable   We want predictability  In 2000 I was at a crossroad in life, about to finish my Ph.D. in clinical psychology and very much struggling to find a way to ground psychology in a Catholic worldview.  Very few resources were available and most of those were very limited.  I was considering leaving the field of psychology altogether, unconvinced that it had anything like the power it promised to bring about healing.  I could fall back on being an applied statistician, or I could retreat into behavioral medicine, but a voice kept saying, “There is a way.  Seek it.”  I trusted that voice, went deeper into my prayer life, and by God's grace, found a path.  Dietrich von Hildebrand (a 20th century Austrian phenomenologist), St. Teresa of Avila, and a protestant psychoanalyst came to help.  By bringing phenomenology, Carmelite writings on prayer, and psychoanalytic approaches to psychotherapy together, I was able to carve out the rudiments of a way of practicing that was both effective and conformable to the Catholic Faith.   In 2020, twenty years later, I found myself at another crossroads, and this time the challenge was to bring psychology and Catholicism together in the online universe in a way that could transform lives without psychotherapy by harnessing the power of a Catholic community.   Zoom, a networking platform and Internal Family Systems came together to make the seemingly impossible possible.  Because of COVID-19, my Catholic interpersonal process group had been meeting online quite effectively.  People were adapting to remote communication technology at a much faster rate.  As stress levels increased with the pandemic there was a huge need to shore up the natural foundation for the spiritual life.  The CCCD podcast I was doing to help Catholics through the pandemic was gaining a following – and the idea came to launch the RCCD community.  Internal Family Systems provides ways for non-therapists to be able to reach out powerfully and effectively to others in community in an attuned way.  IFS also provides an abundance of non-therapy ways of going inside and connecting inwardly.  And the path became clear – let's bring those helpful ways of connecting inwardly and outwardly to committed Catholics who want to be integrated, and who want to be loved and to love others.  Let's make a place where people can practice carrying out the Two Great Commandments, a living training ground to learn to be loved by ourselves and other and to love ourselves and others.    Review of the IFS model of a person Self:  The core of the person, the center of the person.  This is who we sense ourselves to be in our best moments, and when our self is free, and unblended with any of our parts, it governs our whole being as an active, compassionate leader.   We want to be recollected, we want the self governing all of our parts Like the conductor -- leading the musicians in an orchestra Like the captain -- leading and governing all the sailors on a ship.   When we are recollected, in self, 8 C's Calm  Curiousity  Compassion  Confidence  Courage  Clarity  Connectedness  Creativity  Kindness   Parts:  Separate, independently operating personalities within us, each with own unique prominent needs, roles in our lives, emotions, body sensations, guiding beliefs and assumptions, typical thoughts, intentions, desires, attitudes, impulses, interpersonal style, and world view.  Each part also has an image of God and also its own approach to sexuality.  Robert Falconer calls them insiders.   Parts have different attachment styles, different ways of connecting.   Parts have a different love languages -- Five different Love Languages -- Gary Chapman.   Words of affirmation Quality Time Acts of Service Gifts Physical Touch So many parts are hidden.  Consider themselves or are considered by other parts to be unacceptable, unlovable, unworthy, dangerous, harmful, inappropriate, or whatever.   I don't know ourselves when I don't know my parts. I don't know my neighbor when I don't know his or her parts.   Parts can shift abruptly.  They can shift abruptly during sexual intimacy between spouses.  Three roles Exiles --  most sensitive -- these exiles have been exploited, rejected, abandoned in external relationships They have suffered relational traumas or attachment injuries They hold the painful experiences that have been isolated from conscious awareness to protect the person from being overwhelmed with the intensity. They desperately want to be seen and known, to be safe and secure, to be comforted and soothed, to be cared for and loved They want rescue, redemption, healing And in the intensity of their needs and emotions, they threaten to take over and destabilize the person's whole being, the person's whole system And they threaten to harm external relationships Burdens they carry:  Shame, dependency, worthlessness, Fear/Terror, Grief/Loss, Loneliness, Neediness, Pain, lack of meaning or purpose, a sense of being unloved and unlovable, inadequate, abandoned,  Managers These are the proactive protector parts.  They work strategically, with forethought and planning to keep in control of situations and relationships to minimize the likelihood of you being hurt.  They work really hard to keep you safe.  controlling, striving, planning, caretaking, judging,  Can be pessimistic, self-critical, very demanding.   Firefighters When exiles break through and threaten to take over the system, like in Inside Out, remember the parts and the control panel?  So when these exiles are about the break out, the firefighters leap into action.  It's an emergency situation, a crisis, like a fire raging in a house.  No concern for niceties, for propriety, for etiquette, for little details like that.   Firefighter take bold, drastic actions to stifle, numb or distract from the intensity of the exile's experiences.   Intense neediness and grief are overwhelming us!  Emergency actions -- battle stations!   Evasive maneuvers, Arm the torpedoes, Full speed ahead!  No concern for consequences -- don't you get it, we are in a crisis,  All kinds of addictions -- alcohol use, binge eating, shopping, sleeping, dieting, excessive working or exercise, suicidal actions, self-harm, violence, dissociation, distractions, obsessions, compulsions, escapes into fantasy, and raging.   Parts can take over the person   Like in Pixar Movie Inside Out -- anger taking over the control panel of the main character Riley  We call it blending.   Introduction to my Parts  Former Exiles Feisty One (formerly my "angry part")  Adventurer (formerly my "part who holds fear")  Lover Part  Melancholio   Managers Competent Part  Good Boy  Evaluator (formerly "the Critic"   Firefighters Challenger (formerly "the Rebel"  Guardian (formerly "the Intimidator")  Creative Part   Parts in greater detail Feisty One (formerly my "angry part")  Adventurer (formerly my "part who holds fear")  Lover Part  Melancholio  Competent Part  Good Boy  Evaluator (formerly "the Critic"  Challenger (formerly "the Rebel"  Guardian (formerly "the Intimidator")  Creative Part   Elements Personality style  Emotions  Body sensation.   Belief.   Thought  Intentions  Desires  Attitudes  Impulses.  Interpersonal style  World view   My Parts' attitudes about this podcast episode Experiential Exercise -- discovering a part of you.  Caveats. How do you define it? It's hard to force yourself to focus when you're really uninterested in something. ADHD is actually a good thing and it was used for our survival. When society/school tells these children they're slow or that they're not performing well, it can really perpetuate a lot of negative self-talk and make the problem worse. Stella can see how a lot of children with ADHD have been impacted with how poor or low self-esteem. Has ADHD always existed or is this just the byproduct of our environment? Since ADHD kids have a hard time tracking the details, they might be seen as silly or slow. Do ADHD kids seem shyer because of how many times people tell them to “stop” doing things or being who they are? Stella and Sasha wonder what kind of personality they'd truly have if they were just “free to be.” ADHD kids try their best to structure themselves and they can also end up being really obsessed with goals. Once these kids have their minds set on something, they become hyper-focused on achieving it. Even if it means it's not 100% what they want. Social media is made for an ADHD person. How do ADHD traits show up in boys and girls, especially those with gender dysphoria? A lot of successful people have ADHD. it's a great trait to have in the “real world.” Sasha relates to the ADHD symptoms. She loves to try something new. The old, the boring, and the routine are actually important for people, but ADHD people can't seem to get behind it. A slow life is not the only way to get ahead. For the month of August, we're going to be talking about Upleveling — what it is, why it's so hard, and also the easiest way to do it (so there's no struggle or backsliding). Plus, next week on the podcast I'll be talking to one of my rockstar clients who beautifully embodies upleveling, and we'll hear her story, which includes a rapidly expanding business + quitting her full-time job! Needless to say, we've got lots of good stuff in store for you this month. Buckle up! To kick off the Uplevel conversation today, I want to talk about 2 things: (1) what Upleveling is and (2) why it's so friggin' hard! You ready? Let's dive in… What exactly does it mean to Uplevel? To me, Uplevel means to reach for more; to reach beyond the limits of your comfort zone, knowing that as you dream bigger, think bigger and do bigger, you'll naturally expand your capacities to hold more love, success, joy, abundance and the like. A Google search says Upleveling is “to elevate beyond current capabilities or perceptions.” Seems like we agree :-) Now, let's get real...Upleveling sounds great, but it can be really uncomfortable. So uncomfortable in fact that we often (consciously or subconsciously) fight it, preferring to stay with the status quo or even continue with something painful instead of risking the growing pains of Upleveling. As humans, it's been shown that when we're given the choice of a discomfort we know (staying exactly where we are, even if it sucks) or a discomfort we don't know (growth and Upleveling), we tend to choose the former. Why exactly is Upleveling so hard for us? Upleveling requires us to make shifts in habits, routines, behaviors, beliefs, relationships and values. Basically, it's asking you to deconstruct who you've been your whole life and explore new ways of being. That's tough! And, the reason we feel this so acutely (and why New Year's resolutions don't stick, and we fall short of big goals) is because Upleveling stirs up cognitive dissonance. If that term is new to you, cognitive dissonance is “the mental discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs, values or attitudes. People tend to seek consistency in their attitudes and perceptions, so this conflict causes feelings of unease or discomfort. This inconsistency between what people believe and how they behave motivates people to engage in actions that will help minimize feelings of discomfort” (VeryWellMind.com). Basically, when we're attempting to Uplevel, we experience a boatload of cognitive dissonance because we're attempting to act in a way that is not congruent with our underlying beliefs. For example, let's say you're trying to take actions to get more clients and make more money, but your internal dialogue is saying “You're not good enough. No one will work with you. Making money is hard,” and that feels terrible. No matter what you do, you internally feel like you're destined to fail, so you give up, shut down or self-sabotage to eliminate the cognitive dissonance going on inside your brain. It's a self-preservation mechanism. But it doesn't have to be like that. The cool thing is now you know what is going on and why it's been so hard to Uplevel in the past, which is the first step toward making a change! Self-awareness is the first ingredient we need to begin the Upleveling process. In the coming weeks, I'm going to share a lot more about Upleveling, including my favorite tips and tricks for making Upleveling as natural and easy as possible — or in psychology jargon, how to Uplevel with less (or no!) cognitive dissonance. Despite it being hard, we are pulled toward Upleveling (or growth, expansion or personal development, whatever you want to call it) because ultimately it serves us and feels great. It's just the initial commitment that is so hard. I think this quote sums all this up pretty nicely: “You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone; change begins at the end of your comfort zone.” ― Roy T. Bennett And, I'm sure you've realized by now, after you fully embrace the Uplevel, it feels fan-freakin-tastic! One last thing… I have a bit of homework for you as we move into this month of Upleveling. Choose 1 area of your life that you want to focus on and Uplevel this month. Maybe it's your business, your mindset, your health, or your relationship with your partner, most likely the first thing that popped into your mind is the one to go with!
