We're back--we hope you missed us! And we brought scissors, and we are not afraid to use them in spatchcocking a turkey for Thanksgiving. "Spatchcocking?" You may well ask. It's not just a word for removing the spine of the turkey to make for a wonderfully evenly roasted bird in half the time--say goodbye to over-cooked, dry breasts and under-cooked thighs (the turkey's, that is). But it's more than that as chef, teacher and cookbook author Kim O'Donnel explains in "Spatchocking: A Culinary Term for Our Times." Written in 2022 after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but perhaps even more resonant today, O'Donnel reflects on her own freedom to make choices that have shaped who she is."The right to decide allowed me to become the woman I am . . . The choices that were mine to make allowed me to forge my own path. They've given me the wisdom to know this: Without safe, legal abortion, this country is spatchcocked."Kim O'Donnel, "Spatchcock: A Culinary Term for Our Times," Lulu Pork Chop, July 3, 2022But what about Rhinebeck?! While other podcasters might broadcast live from the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival, we prefer to wallow in the womb of time and reflect on our experience for a month. What did we conclude? It wasn't just fun, it was joyously inspiring. We met so many designers and knitters we admire--Aimée Gille, Vincent Williams, Patty Lyons, Sarah Schira, Jamie Lomax, Bristol Ivy, Gigi Queen of Orange, the Grocery Girls and Rosann Fleischauer. What about Andrea Mowry? Don't worry, her pattern "Framed" clearly caught the collective fancy this year and was everywhere in all colors and sizes. It was magical to see so many people wearing hand-knit their framed garb on the hill for the meet-up.

Brainy Thing: 15.55 Behind the Redwood Curtain: 22:47 What we Learned from our Knitting Welts and tiny mittens were the notable learning for Gnorwen the Gnome in Sarah Schira's All Work, Gnome Play Mystery Knit Along. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/all-work-gnome-play She added a red beard, eliminated the flower decorations and included a miniature set of skis for what will be her grandson's gnome. Catherine coaxed herself on with the help of Marcie Bell's beautiful darning needles to finish sewing up her Agata sweater by Leah Chapman. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/agata She also knit up a few scrubbies and a couple of mitered squares. Brainy Thing: Researchers say we are biased toward believing each other -- which makes us vulnerable to liars. Starting with Aja Raden's book The Truth about Lies: The Illusion of Honesty and the Evolution of Deceit and then other research, Margaret reports on the Cognitive Bias, The Truth Bias, other biases and the Truth-Default Theory. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/let-their-words-do-the-talking/201306/truth-bias https://www.amazon.com/Truth-About-Lies-Illusion-Evolution-ebook/dp/B08BYCS1SG/ref=sr_1_1?crid=OYUJLJXS4KNA&keywords=the+truth+about+lies&qid=1640643756&s=books&sprefix=the+truth+about+lies%2Cstripbooks%2C1059&sr=1-1 Behind the Redwood Curtain: Although first skeptical, Catherine now sees the benefits of the Arcata Gateway project for our town and other small towns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUsFlnX2xoE
In this episode, Ashley shares some things she learned about "yarning bombing". She also has poor audio quality from trying out a new recording set-up, whoops! Ashey used Crimes of the Senses: Yarn Bombing and Aesthetic Criminology by Andrew Millie, Craftivism and Yarn Bombing: A Criminological Exploration by Alyce McGovern, and this TED Talk by Magda Sayeg as key resources for this story. We both recently read/listened to The Power of Knitting by Loretta Napoleoni (highly recommended!). We also briefly mention "The Racism Drama Unraveling the Knitting World, a well-researched Daily Beast Article. Ashley watched A Castle for Christmas - A Netflix Christmas Movie - which happens to mention yarn bombing! Natalie and Ashley are both knitting Leave Gnome Stone Unturned by Sarah Schira. Ashley is also working on a set of Knitted Pinecones by Jesie Ostermiller. We are snacking on Dot's Pretzels (Natalie) and Trader Joe's Dark Stars (Ashley).
