When you think about it, pirates have heists too. But when you're doing them all the time, it's a lot less formal. It's more like, “let's go get ice cream! Someone might die but… we could all be rich and our compatriots could be free!”   A recruiting cap't came our way / From an inn near town at the close of day. He said my Troy, m'boy, you're a fine young man / Would you like to free the men with your outstretched hand / With a scarlet coat and a fine cocked hat / And a crossbow at your shoulder? / The dubloom he took and he kissed the book / Oh our sweet Troy what'll happen to ya?   Sponsors - United by Blue, creators of sustainable apparel and outdoor gear. Mike hit the ground running from a young age, steadily working jobs from the first chance he got at 14 years old and making his way through high school with a focus on business and fine art. He then made the move to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts, spending those years freelancing and developing the knowledge and skills that would lead to a Bachelor of Fine Arts in computer art. Countless projects later, the desire came to move away from creating commercial content for others and channel his energy, enthusiasm, and expertise into something more tangible, to build something from the ground up that inspires and empowers people and makes their nights at home special and memorable. Intrigued by the format of wildly popular meal subscription services, Mike—something of a craft cocktail hobbyist himself—drew up the plan that would lead to the founding of Shaker & Spoon. From this moment of conception, all the way through to today, Mike's long-fostered skills in design, video editing, packaging, branding, networking, and management have found their rightful home at S&S. And after just a few short years, this company—scaled 100% via bootstrapping and having taken on no debt before 2021—had already garnered many corporate partnerships, countless all-star collaborations, an ever-growing subscriber base, and a fiercely dedicated social media community, even before the cocktails-at-home craze of 2020.Having overcome a tumultuous childhood amid unrest in the former Soviet Union, Anna Gorovoy's drive for achievement and self-starting nature emerged quickly upon her family's move to the US. Her high school's valedictorian and a graduate of Yale University, she immediately applied her skills in detail-driven design and her love of the written word throughout a series of internships, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, before an impressive stint designing best-selling books at Macmillan Publishers. Lured away from office life by an exciting chance at entrepreneurship and determined to challenge herself by building something new, Anna stepped into the role of Chief Brand Officer and Co-founder of Shaker & Spoon. Her years in publishing, during which she flexed her creative muscles and trained and mentored new hires, equipped her with a valuable skill set for molding the company's fun, educational, and approachable brand identity. While Shaker & Spoon's delicious drinks in a way speak for themselves, it took Anna's sharp, disciplined eye and cheerful spirit to create a fully cultivated, professional, and trustworthy voice and visual style from day one. And as the company has grown, so too have the teams she leads, now including customer experience, distinct experience (bulk and corporate sales), and all matters of marketing, copy, and content. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:Mike Milyavsky's art and entrepreneurial backgroundAnna Gorovoy's fine art and graphic design backgroundHow they created Shaker & SpoonThe services they offer through Shaker & SpoonWhy they operate on a vertical integration modelThe production and supply fulfillment challenges in their businessThe artistry of the cocktails and how that affects ingredient sourcingHow award-winning mixologists factor into their companyWhat Mike and Anna have planned for Shaker & Spoon in the futureIn this episode…Mike Milyavsky and Anna Gorovoy were born in the same city, in Minsk, Belarus, and both their families emigrated to America when they were young. But the two wouldn't meet until arts high school in Maryland, Baltimore. They started Shaker & Spoon, their cocktail subscription service, in 2015 based on an entrepreneurial idea of Mike's.Both Mike and Anna were and are artists. Mike pushed his creative expression into the business endeavor while Anna still uses much of her artistic instincts in the brand work. They explain how art still greatly informs Shaker & Spoon and how exactly they combine the artistry with the business side of the company.  In this episode of What CEOs Talk About, host Martin Hunter and guests Mike Milyavsky and Anna Gorovoy discuss the technical structure of Shaker & Spoon and how it was built to make it profitable. Mike and Anna explain the demands of sourcing unique ingredients, how the production team expands with seasonal labor, and they speak to the future of pushing Shaker & Spoon farther into the B2B space. The structure of vertical integration and the demands of in-house production are explored in detail in this not-to-be-missed episode.Resources mentioned in this episode:URGEOContact email: info@urgeo.comMartin Hunter on LinkedInMike Milyavsky on LinkedInAnna Gorovoy on LinkedInShaker & SpoonShaker & Spoon on FacebookShaker & Spoon on YouTubeHow I Built This podcastRecommended resources for CEOs:Monday.comBambooHRSponsor For This PodcastThis podcast is brought to you by URGEO, Operational excellence in action through the Are you Ready Program! Are you READY to free up your time?Optimize your Organization?Grow revenue and reduce costs?Build your leadership team?Partnering with organizations like yours, we work with you to implement our proven methodology designed to transform your operations, while providing accurate advice and support for real success.Translating strategy into frontline operations, URGEO helps leaders and the people within their organization excel at safe, on-time, on-budget and on-spec delivery. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   Not to denigrate other subscription services, but Shaker & Spoon isn't just "stuff in a box," insist co-founders Anna Gorovoy and Mike Milyavsky. There's passion, a knowledge base, an online community, and the recipe and ingredients.   Early feedback to the box called it "a chemistry set for adults," Anna says.   "People will stick with you if it's wonderful, if the cocktails are inventive, if everything is exciting and delicious," Anna says. "We've also always focused on the customer experience and aimed to go above and beyond in terms of the support that we provide to anyone who is contacting us, who needs anything, whether it's a problem with their package or just some mixology advice, you know, we're there."   Anna says that listening to what people want seems so simple, but it's critical.   Shaker & Spoon was a "bootstrap" company from the beginning, so how they spend money to advertise the brand is critical, Mike says because you're essentially paying someone to visit your storefront or website.   "Your store needs to be ready," Mike says. "Your product needs to be ready. Your customer experience needs to be ready before you invite the traffic in...these are lessons you learn when you have no money."   Shaker & Spoon isn't in retail stores yet, but it's a strategy that could come into plan. First up is a product aimed at the bar industry.   Recently, the brand did a large fundraiser with proceeds donated to charities in war-torn Ukraine. Both Anna and Mike are from families that fled from the former Soviet Union. It's an experience that they translate into their business lives.   "I sometimes think when you're fearful about things, it's a great example to put things in context," Anna says. "I mean, we love what we do, we do this business, and so forth. And we take the risk, and there's obviously a downside potential. But, you know, it pales in comparison to the kind of bravery (of) coming to a whole new country...it does put stuff in context, right?"   In Part 2, Anna and Mike talk about: * What sets Shaker & Spoon apart from other subscription services. * How the brand has generated and cultivated its fan base. * Capturing the right audience for the website. * How to take a tour of the brand's website. * Future plans for a product for the bar industry, which has been reaching out to the brand to feature its cocktails. * The brand's footprint on social media. * The co-founders' thoughts on the Ukraine war - Mike and Anna are refugees from the former Soviet Union.   Join Ramon Vela, Anna Gorovoy and Mike Milyavsky as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Shaker & Spoon, visit: https://shakerandspoon.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   Shaker & Spoon aims to be the closest translation between the best craft cocktails globally and people's homes. The brand, an e-commerce subscription box service featuring cocktail recipes and ingredients, was co-founded by Anna Gorovoy and Mike Milyavsky.   The brand has an elevator pitch: "Blue Apron for cocktails."   "We work with really great award-winning bartenders to create original recipes for our box, so you're getting something special and exclusive," Anna says.   As Anna calls it, Shaker & Spoon's "360 experience" includes music playlists, food pairings from bartenders, and even virtual happy hours.   "It's not just the box - I like to say that it's a whole lifestyle," Anna says. "We have a community Facebook group, 16,000 members and growing that is just hopping every day. ... I'm proud of what we're doing because it brings a lot of joy to people."   From an entrepreneurship point of view, both Anna and Mike had previous experience running businesses. Still, they craved the opportunity to create a physical product inspired by the craft cocktail scene.   The partners quickly realized that the brand shouldn't provide the actual alcohol - the red tape and varying liquor laws are too challenging.   "Anybody can get a bottle of vodka or whiskey," Mike says. "What we (do) is to showcase what a spirit can do."   In Part 1, Anna and Mike talk about: * Gratitude for the small business community in New York. * Why the brand is "Blue Apron for cocktails." The box supplies the recipes and ingredients - the customer recreates the cocktails at home. * How the COVID pandemic helped fuel the brand's growth. * How the Facebook community is also a vital part of the brand's identity. * Members coordinated a Zoom meet-up event in 2021 with groups meeting up in person or online across the country. * How the company worked with hospitals and other essential businesses during the pandemic to provide support. * Why community and connection are at the brand's core, sharing a story about a Florida member who traveled up the East Coast and met fellow members along the way. * Why the brand doesn't provide the actual alcohol but instead the focus is on the recipe and ingredients.   Join Ramon Vela, Anna Gorovoy and Mike Milyavsky as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Shaker & Spoon, visit: https://shakerandspoon.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. In the first Best Of of 2021: Andreas Malm joins Sam to discuss his new book, How to Blow Up a Pipeline: Learning to Fight in a World on Fire. Andreas begins by explaining that while the pandemic has temporarily tamped down the climate movement, it has simultaneously led to a 7% drop in world-wide emissions and demonstrated how government can effectively intervene in the private sector during a crisis. Then, Sam asks Andreas to explain the two strategies of the climate movement, one being putting pressure on the government to pass policy and the other being reducing profits of fossil fuel companies through physically shutting down their operations. Andreas discusses the limitations of peaceful climate activism and argues for the need for a more radical flank in the movement. And finally, as it turns out, renewable energy is actually much cheaper to produce, but companies refuse to switch over because they can get away with a much higher markup on fossil fuels than they would be able to on renewables.   Then, Judy Gold joins the program to celebrate Trump's defeat with special guest Donald Trump! Comedian James Austin Johnson sticks around to discuss growing up an evangelical Christian, conservative comedy, and how his Republican family members like his Trump impression. It's the FINAL live show of 2021! Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton IN-STUDIO, alongside Matt Binder for the WHOLE show, to round up the week in news, and reflect on the year that was. They begin by covering the recent NYT scoop on the FBI's infiltration into Black Lives Matter protests in Portland last year, in which they employed mass surveillance and entrapment tactics to round up leftists for vandalism or having arms, as well as the wild contrast between these widespread efforts and the solo informant and lack of presence by the FBI at the Jan 6 insurrection. This allows Matt, Brandon, and Emma to look into the history of the FBI's infiltration of the left, and how, no matter the amount of self-victimization on the right, their complaints simply cannot compare to the levels of surveillance and oppression of leftist groups. Next, they cover Donald Trump, the racist clock, somehow being right twice yesterday, including his blunt shutdown of Candace Owens as he flaunts the three Trump vaccines and a critique of his wife's own NFT drive. This brings up a prolonged discussion of crypto's continuation of capitalist scams, and how this new frontier of the internet is working to commodify every element of the online world, ultimately serving the same speculative pockets that succeeded in running wild after 2008. They also touch on the new COVID pill, and explore where we're at two years into the pandemic. And in the Fun Half: Matt, Matt, Brandon, and Emma discuss the set up to the JFK assassination, Dave from Jamaica asks the hosts to remove one technological innovation from history and what they think about Trump's pro-vaccine rhetoric, before he and Brandon jump off into a discussion of Ice Cube's “Black. 2744 - Stopping Gentrification From Destroying Neighborhoods w/ Joe Margulies

Emma hosts Joe Margulies, Professor of Law and Government at Cornell University, to discuss his recent book Thanks For Everything (Now Get Out): Can We Restore Neighborhoods Without Destroying Them? on the never-ending process that is neoliberal gentrification, why it's so hard to stop, and what we can do to return the power to the neighborhoods we are so intent on “improving.” They begin by touching on why Professor Margulies decided to focus on a particularly devastated region of Providence, Rhode Island - Olneyville - rather than notorious gentrification hotbeds such as Brooklyn and Chicago, walking through the historical collapse, and eventual rebuilding of the neighborhood over the last century, before they look at how this process, as it exists, simply moves the neighborhood's residents from an environment of toxicity to an environment where they cannot afford to live in their own houses anymore – as soon as it becomes safer, the reckoning begins. This brings Professor Margulies and Emma to the topic of neoliberalism and how this has massively spurred the gentrification process, including looking at its carceral mindset that addresses poverty and houselessness with imprisonment rather than money and housing, puts the only agency and power in the hands of external non-profits rather than community members, and only seeks transformation for capital gains of investors rather than to grow the capital of the neighborhood itself. This allows them to discuss the role of non-profits and incentives such as Opportunity Zones in ensuring that the only winners from neighborhood investment are for gentrifiers and investors, before they wrap up the interview by touching on Professor Margulies' concept of “neighborhood trusts” and how they can support a community-led investment that keeps the agency and fruits of labor in the hands of the residents.  Emma also touches on the devastation of the monoclonal antibody supplies and her continued support for Odell Beckham Jr. And in the Fun Half: Matt Lech takes the stage to discuss recent revelations on the JFK assassination, walking through the lack of credibility in the traditional “lone gunman” narrative, the CIA's pre-existing relationship with Lee Harvey Oswald, and why the conspiracy should empower the public, before he highlights Jefferson Morley's recent exploration of the legacy of doubt amidst Kennedy's closest allies, and the integral role of anti-communism. Emma and Matt break down a crazy weekend in news, from the breakdown of BBB negotiations to labor, COVID, the courts, and more! Beginning with an update on Omicron, Emma walks through the state of coronavirus, the importance of mRNA vaccines, and the Biden Administration's turn on testing infrastructure, before she looks at Donald Trump and Bill O'Reilly coming out as boosted while DeSantis discusses his premonition that COVID would develop variants. Next, they cover Manchin's secret rage at being held accountable on the public stage, and how this is totally what inspired his backing out of Build Back Better, not his corporate ideology, before walking through the state of the bill, and looking at Ben Shapiro's level-headed response to Manchin's move, with some talking points eerily reminiscent to one Joe Biden in how they fetishize incrementalist procedure. They also cover Donald Trump coming after Tish James on the legal stage due to his well-known aversion to politicized Attorneys General. And in the Fun Half: Nomiki Konst joins as Emma and Matt take a call from Kowalski to cover “cover crops,” Matt gives his Lech-ture on the recent 110-year sentence for a 23 y/o trucker and the solidarity we've seen around it, and Phil from the Chicago suburbs shoots Emma some compliments before they bond over being self-hating militant vegans. They also cover Kyle Rittenhouse's epic entrance at Turning Points USA's AmericaFest, NYC covid updates, and the Pentagon's UFO release as a distraction from genuine conspiracy. Alex from NYC gives his celebrity fight club matchups, Nomiki discusses stopping by Dan Bongino's show to discuss a cigarette-health-issue-denying firm's statistics on natural disasters and climate change, plus, your calls and IMs! After that we discuss some MLB standings and give our thoughts on the start of NFL training camp. Don't forget, use promo code NOLA at Shaker and Spoon for a $10 discount!!!  * Peru’s national spirit * It is made from only 8 grape varietals. * There are three variants of Pisco: puro (single grape expression), acholado (blend of two or more grapes), and Mosto Verde (a style in which the juice of the pressed grapes is partially fermented). * The Denomination of Origin it carries dictates that this grape-based brandy/grape-based distillate (like an unaged cognac) is distilled to proof with NOTHING added -- no water, no color, no wood aging. * Pisco doesn’t age, it rests, in non-reactive vessels. * About 8 lbs of grapes go into making a Puro or Acholado -- it takes 18 lbs of grapes to make a Mosto Verde style Pisco.   WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH PISCO? * Make craft cocktail bar drinks in your own home with the Shaker & Spoon cocktail kit (www.shakerandspoon.com) -- use our special code Nola by July 31st and get $10 off the one box or even a whole subscription -- all you need is Shaker & Spoon's upcoming August "Pisco Fever" box, plus one 750mL bottle of Pisco, and you can create a 12-cocktail party (consisting of three different drinks from three different bartenders, including one from right here in NOLA)! * Try a Chilcano -- delivers the Deep South/South American connection. The Chilcano is one of Peru’s four pillar cocktails and the South American cousin of a whiskey ginger (aka horse’s neck) -- it's a classic Highball, easy to make, just Pisco + ginger beer or ginger ale, splash of lime and a dash of bitters (Angostura or Amargo Chuncho if you can get them).  IF YOU MISSED THE PISCOTARIAN 2.0 EVENT AT TALES OF THE COCKTAIL... ...you can recreate one of the cocktails featured that day -- this one is by Tony Abou-Ganim (aka The Modern Mixologist) from Libertine Social in the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. 2019 Passion Punch 1 1/2 oz Pisco 100 Acholado 1/2 oz heavy-dark rum 1 oz passion fruit puree 2 oz freshly squeezed orange juice 1 oz fresh lemon juice 1 oz organic agave syrup 2 dashes Angostura orange bitters Pinch of ground nutmeg, garnish with orange and lemon slices, FILTHY black cherry, and a mint sprig.  To follow the Trade Commission of Peru in Miami, Hashtags/handles are #SpiritofPeru #PiscoisPeru #Piscotarian #PiscoNights @peru.trade
