Fun fact: this episode exists thanks to a few pints and a little Radical Candor in the wild. Our audio engineer Nick met today's guest, Chloé van Bergen, VP of Operations at Secretly Group, at his brother's stag do. One loud London pub and an honest conversation later—we knew we had to get her on the show. Join Kim and Amy for a candid conversation with Chloé about what it really takes to lead change inside a legacy-driven music company. ReWilding our Water: From Rain to River to Sewer and back with Tim Smedley, author of The Last Drop

    Accidental Gods

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2025 94:05

If you listen to this podcast for any length of time, you'll know that I believe the way forward is predicated on our finding shared values—I'd go for integrity, compassion, courage and generosity of spirit as the baselines—and then a suite of clear asks in the outer world and needs in the inner world.  In logistical terms, at an absolute baseline, we need Clean Air, Clean Water, Clean Soil. These are non negotiable and the fact that we currently have none of these is a grim indictment of how much we live in an economy that sucks the life out of everything rather than a society that grows. But we do have people who are working flat out to change the narrative on exactly these topics and this week's guest, Tim Smedley, is one of these.  Tim is an award-winning sustainability journalist who has worked with the BBC, the Guardian, Sunday Times and Financial Times. He is also a celebrated non-fiction writer. His first book, Clearing the Air: The Beginning and the End of Air Pollution, was shortlisted for the UK's Royal Society Science Book Prize. His latest: The Last Drop: Solving the World's Water Crisis was a Times Book of the Year and has been described as 'Smart, Sobering and Scholarly' which it certainly is.This is one of those books that's both terrifying, utterly compelling and—I'm glad to say—ultimately inspiring.  Yes, the world's water is in a desperate state.  Yes, it has been horribly mismanaged almost everywhere by the kleptocracy that masquerades as a democracy in our modern world.  But yes, we do have responses that will work, they have been carefully explored and water is one of those unifying elements that brings people together across tribal boundaries. We all need clean water and getting there means we need to find common principles by which we can live. Spoiler alert: turning water into a for-profit commodity is not a part of the solution.  Regenerative agriculture, re-Wilding our waters, beavers (yay!) and sane water saving/sparing practices definitely are. Tim is so knowledgeable and his books are both brilliantly researched and utterly personal.  He goes to the places he writes about and his first-hand experiences are priceless.  I have put links in the show notes for both of his books, plus the Medium article on DeGrowth which is where I first came across his work.  Please do explore afterwards. "When other people were like, 'Dude, what's your mom on?' it really started to sink in," she explained to Renée. The violence and instability at home led Claire to a lot of risky behavior as an adolescent, and at 16 she was a pregnant high school sophomore. Spoiler alert: Claire is now married to a supportive partner; she found her career passion; she has a beautiful relationship with her two teenage kids. How did she get there? Well, as you can imagine, there is quite a story in between, and Claire is great at telling it; she is smart, energetic, funny, and vulnerable...everything we could want in a guest! Her openness and intelligence make it easy for Renée to get in there and sort through the clinical content. Claire has done a lot of healing work already and is better than most at self-care, so she is understandably flummoxed by an uptick in her CPTSD symptoms. They talk moms, marriage, money, movement, and more as Renée explains Claire's recent symptom surge, outlines the steps to resolving it, and sneaks in a last minute conversation about the dangers of "self discipline." When's the last time you touched grass… before your phone? No really. Imagine waking up, resisting the urge to scroll, walking outside barefoot, and just… grounding. That's what today's episode is all about — unplugging from the madness and plugging into what's real. And man, this convo hit different. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I sat down with Ryan Levesque, a 7-time Inc. 5000 CEO, 2-time #1 National Bestselling Author, and legit one of the smartest (and realest) entrepreneurs I know. He's the guy behind the wildly successful Ask Method — but lately, he's been asking deeper questions.Like…What if success isn't just scaling tech, but scaling truth? What if the best things in life can't be optimized or outsourced? What if real wealth is measured in moments, not metrics?Ryan's on a mission to live a radically real life. He left the digital rat race for a self-sustaining lifestyle — think chickens, crops, faith, and family. And in this convo, we explore his framework called “The Return to Real” — a philosophy (and lifestyle) that'll get you rethinking your entire hustle. We jammed on everything from purpose-driven business to farming wisdom to why technology is no longer a moat. Spoiler alert: In a world where anyone can clone your product, the unscalable stuff is your secret weapon. Love. Integrity. Presence. A handwritten note. A meaningful convo. A hug from your little one. THAT'S the new currency. Here are a few gems from this episode you won't wanna miss:Ryan's daily practice to instantly ground your energy and clear your mind — no apps requiredWhy the real flex in business is doing things that don't scale (and why your competition won't do it)The communication skill that'll set you apart in a noisy, AI-run worldHow to recalibrate when you feel out of sync — personally or professionallyWhy following your heart isn't fluffy — it's your most strategic moveThis convo is raw, soulful, and super practical. It's not about quitting business and buying a farm (unless that's your vibe) — it's about remembering who you are underneath the noise. Slowing down enough to ask better questions. And choosing depth over distraction, every dang time.So if you're craving more meaning, more alignment, and a business that feels good to run, hit play on this one. Let's get real: hiring today is a mess. I've been there both as a candidate and as the interviewer who wasn't properly trained. So, when I discovered Lorna Erickson and Victoria Gates, two women who are revolutionizing the corporate interviewing landscape, I knew we had to have them on the show.In this episode, we dive into the shocking state of interviews today - from the mundane but outdated, biased questions that are still being asked to the absolute trainwreck moments that are happening at the table. Like a hiring manager who thought it was a good idea to ask a candidate to sell a dirty old shoe, sort of a creative take on that age-old sales question, “sell me this pen.” Yeah, you'll want to hear this story. But it's not all doom and gloom! Lorna and Victoria share how they transitioned from the corporate world into entrepreneurship, using their combined expertise to help businesses and hiring managers learn how to conduct effective interviews without inadvertently violating the law (yes, asking about holiday plans to try to figure out if a candidate is a parent is illegal). They've been able to show incredible results for their clients, underscoring how getting the interview process right brings a massive, lasting impact. They've been there, and they're showing others how to do it right.Of course, we can't talk about interviewing without touching on ageism, something that has been a problem for both older and younger candidates. We discuss how unconscious bias shows up in interviews and how companies need to adopt a broader perspective. Spoiler alert: it's not just about hiring people you can grab beers with. And the best part? They share their golden rule of interviewing, and trust me, if companies started following it, it would completely shift the hiring process. It's about respect, balance, and ensuring you're bringing in the right person, not just the most convenient one.Listen to the episode and let's make the hiring process better, together. This week, in episode 250, we're joined by special guest Alan Pentz, who recently stepped back from his government-contracting business to start the Owner Institute, which draws on lessons he learned the hard way to help business owners scale their businesses. In his new role, Alan has immersed himself in the world of generative AI, and he's come to some intriguing conclusions, one of which is that AI will eliminate most B-to-B agencies—marketing agencies, public relations agencies, professional services firms. Why is that? Because, Alan says, businesses will no longer be willing to pay agencies retainers of $5,000 or $10,000 a month once they realize they can get similar or even superior work from an AI chatbot. “In general,” Alan says, “most technology waves end up with a few big winners, and most people are just roadkill.” To explore the theory that agencies are likely to be roadkill, we invited Jaci Russo, owner of a marketing agency, and Sarah Segal, owner of a public relations agency, to have a conversation with Alan. Spoiler alert: There were no tears, no threats, and no insults.
