(AURN News) - Despite progress, stubborn inflation still weighs on American consumers as the Federal Reserve maintains its campaign to bring prices under control. Households are still grappling with high costs at the grocery store and gas pump. Speaking at the Stanford Business, Government, and Society Forum, Fed Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged that while inflation has fallen from last year, it remains above the Fed's 2% target. "Growth in economic activity and employment was strong in 2023, as real gross domestic product expanded more than 3 percent and 3 million jobs were created, even as inflation fell substantially," Powell stated. He also emphasized that the Fed would not consider lowering interest rates until officials have greater confidence inflation is moving. “On inflation, it is too soon to say whether the recent readings represent more than just a bump. We do not expect that it will be appropriate to lower our policy rate until we have greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably down toward 2 percent. Given the strength of the economy and progress on inflation so far, we have time to let the incoming data guide our decisions on policy.” Powell cited positives like healing global supply chains, rising labor force participation, and strong GDP growth of over 3% in 2023 as the economy added 3 million jobs. “In addition, labor supply increased significantly, thanks to rising participation among 25-to-54-year-olds, as well as a strong pace of immigration,” he said. However, he cautioned that the Fed walks a tightrope when it comes to curbing inflation. The path forward remains uncertain, Powell warned. "On inflation, it is too soon to say whether the recent readings represent more than just a bump. We do not expect that it will be appropriate to lower our policy rate until we have greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably down toward 2 percent. Given the strength of the economy and progress on inflation so far, we have time to let the incoming data guide our decisions on policy." Cutting rates too quickly risks re-igniting price pressures, but over-tightening could constrain the economy. But for Americans still bearing the brunt of high inflation, fresh relief may not arrive any time soon as the battle to restore price stability drags on. Learn more about your ad choices. An expert in interpersonal dynamics, today's guest, Carole Robin, understands the importance of ensuring children grow up in loving, supportive, and non-judgmental surroundings. Carole is best known for her legendary Stanford Business class, Interpersonal Dynamics (aka “Touchy Feely”). Along with collaborator David Bradford, with whom she co-authored the book Connect, Carole has helped thousands of business leaders deepen their personal relationships while elevating their career trajectories. Carole's experience of being raised by a judgmental mother and an optimistic father directly impacted the way she experienced the world at a young age: while her father was unquestioningly supportive of her capabilities, her mother was much more reserved in her encouragement. Through navigating these relationships in her formative years, Carole learned to become competitive and resourceful–but as an adult, also found the need to unlearn some of the protections she had built around her feelings to better her relationships with others around her. Now an expert in managing interpersonal relationships, Carole has embraced being comfortable with her feelings and believes that this level of comfort needs to be fostered throughout childhood. Our discussion highlights the path that brought her to this realization and the conscientious decisions she has made as both a mother and as a grandmother to ensure her children have the unequivocal love and support that they need to develop the resilience, curiosity, and confidence necessary for well-rounded success. In this episode you'll hear: How Carole came to the realization that some of the attributes that helped her to succeed were also hindering her growth Why understanding and unpacking our feelings can be more difficult than it seems The importance of instilling a growth mindset during childhood Why it is so crucial for children to feel they are unequivocally loved and not underestimated throughout their childhood Resources from this episode: If you want to contact Carole you can find her on www.connectandrelate, Linkedin or www.leadersintech.org *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Emerald City Productions. In this episode of The Greg Bennett Show, Greg has a wonderful conversation with one of the brilliant minds of the 21st century. A key figure in developing growth with some of the world's leading tech companies. Ed is also an extraordinary athlete, winning his first Ironman after only 6 months of being in the sport of Triathlon. Father of four. Harvard Grad, MBA at Stanford Business school, Investor, Entrepreneur, and Growth Specialist. Previously Vice President of Growth at Uber and Head of International Growth at Facebook. He speaks Mandarin and Japanese. And just recently at the youthful age of 39, he found Ironman. And he’s not just good at his new chosen sport, he’s exceptional. At his first Ironman at 2018 Lake Placid he won overall in 9hr 18, only a few months after he started the sport, and qualified for Kona IM World Championships in the process… a month after that breakthrough at Lake Placid he then went and raced the Copenhagen IM and was first age grouper in 8.27 and finished 10th overall including the professionals. On top of all of that, he’s a great guy, incredibly down-to-earth, and simply a genuine person. In this episode, Ed describes his journey into endurance sport and how running in high school enabled him to find confidence and belief in himself in a time when many of us are struggling with insecurities and are finding ourselves. He discusses his time running at Harvard and post University and then his void of physical activity for 10 years as he was consumed by work building his own company's Datesite.com, Friend.ly, and then eventually at Facebook and Uber. He describes the cultures of Facebook and Uber and his relationship with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Ed shares how he decides to invest and become an advisor in various companies. We discuss growth and how Ed has used both science and art to grow all these companies. A lot to learn from this one, from one of the great minds in investing and entrepreneurship. “A group of behavioural scientists walk into a bar…” Sounds like the start of a joke right - it’s not. Those ten people were gathering to perform sketch comedy and two of them ended up researching the hypothesis that humour is serious business and that it is vastly underleveraged in most workplaces today. Dr Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas now teach the course Humor: Serious Business at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and have co-authored the book Humor, Seriously: why humor is a secret weapon in business and life. They explain what levity does to our brains and how anyone can harness it and use it skilfully at work. Can you spot the finger in the photo? Now that's funny. What is your humour type? Here is the quiz. Producer: Maria Tickle

Humor does more than just make people laugh. It allows you to connect with your audience, diffuse tension, elevate status, and compel others to your point of view. Humor can also help you and your message stand out, yet most of us hesitate to use humor, especially in our professional lives. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Matt Abrahams speaks with Stanford GSB Professor Jennifer Aaker and Lecturer Naomi Bagdonas about when and how humor operates in the work place. “Many believe that humor simply has no place amidst serious work,” Professor Aaker says. “Yet showing your sense of humor can make your peers and your friends attribute more perceptions of confidence and status to us while also cultivating a sense of trust.”Aaker and Bagdonas are are the authors of Humor, Seriously: Why Humor Is a Secret Weapon in Business and Life, which comes out in October of this year. Think Fast, Talk Smart is a podcast produced by Stanford Graduate School of Business and hosted by Matt Abrahams. Each episode provides concrete, easy-to-implement tools and techniques to help you hone and enhance your communication.

MBA Programs have always been known for their rigorous focus on data, analytics & financial wizardry. So why have top schools like Harvard, Yale & Wharton introduced coursework on meditation, mindfulness, compassion & purpose? The shift in focus is clearly intentional, & Stanford Business School Professor Leah Weiss brilliantly explains why self-mastery skills have become a critical piece of the curriculum.

Thomas A. Russo joined Gardner Russo & Gardner LLC as a partner in 1989. In 2014, he became the Managing Member of the firm. Gardner Russo & Gardner LLC is a registered investment adviser under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, and is not associated with any bank, security dealer or other third party. Mr. Russo serves as Managing Member of Gardner Russo & Gardner LLC and of Semper Vic Partners GP, LP, which oversees two “global value”, long-only, equity investment partnerships, the first of which Mr. Russo founded in 1983. Mr. Russo oversees more than $12 billion distributed between Semper Vic partnerships and separate accounts managed in parallel fashion. Mr. Russo looks for companies with strong cash-flow characteristics that generate large amounts of “free” cash flow. These industries typically have included branded food and beverage, tobacco, and advertising-supported media. Mr. Russo's portfolio companies tend to produce high rates of return on their assets and have strong balance sheets. The challenge comes in finding these obviously desirable investments at compelling valuations. Mr. Russo commits capital to leading global consumer products companies whose brands enjoy growing market shares in parts of the world undergoing economic growth and enjoying increasing political stability. He prefers companies with sufficient cash flows from existing operations, combined with balance-sheet strength, to underwrite investments designed to activate emerging markets. Mr. Russo backs rare management teams willing to invest to secure robust future returns even when such investments burden current reported profits. Mr. Russo believes that managements of family-controlled companies have the “capacity to suffer” when investments intended to build long-term wealth are ill-received by short-term focused Wall Street analysts. Mr. Russo believes that such “capacity to suffer” leaves family-controlled companies often uniquely well positioned to bear short-term burdens on reported profits in pursuit of long-term gains in intrinsic value. Accordingly, he often invests in public companies where founding families still retain control and significant investment exposure, to reduce management agency costs and to align owner interests. Mr. Russo's goal is one of an absolute return rather than a relative return. He pursues a long-term investment objective of compounding assets between 10 and 20 percent per year without great turnover, thereby deferring capital gains tax on unrealized gains. Thomas Russo is a graduate of Dartmouth College (BA, 1977), and Stanford Business and Law Schools (MBA/JD, 1984). Memberships include Dean's Advisory Council for Stanford Law School, Dartmouth College's President's Leadership Council, and California Bar Association. Mr. Russo is a charter member of the Advisory Board for the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing at Columbia Business School. He serves on the boards of the Winston Churchill Foundation of the U.S., Facing History and Ourselves, and Storm King Art Center. In May 2017, he was awarded The Graham & Dodd, Murray, Greenwald Prize for Value Investing.
