In every flood scarred bend of an Appalachian river sits a chance to rebuild something stronger, cleaner water for people, and room for a 160 million-year salamander to thrive again. Hurricane-shaped chaos is unveiling a surprising truth when we restore stream banks, fund green storm water projects, and protect keystone species like the Eastern Hellbender, we don't just rescue wildlife, we buffer towns and farms and drinking water intakes against the next big storm. The same fixes that help a snot otter bounce back can future-proof entire communities like yours and mine. So what can I do to turn the washed-out creeks and budget cuts into a cleaner, more resilient future?my guest today is Jackie Flynn Mogensen, senior reporter at Mother Jones. Jackie embedded with conservation biologists after Hurricane Helene and uncovered how saving an ancient salamander could safeguard our waterways and our towns for decades to come.Stick around and you'll discover practical ways to turn today's river wreckage into tomorrow's resilience.-----------Have feedback or questions? We tend to believe that more knowledge and more information will make our decisions easier and better. But what if that abundance of insight is actually holding us back?As leaders in this industry, we're often inundated with options, research, and opinions—yet that flood of input can lead to indecision, anxiety, and hesitation. In this episode of The FutureProof Advisor, I unpack how too much thinking and not enough doing can hinder our progress, both individually and within our firms. I explore the paradox where knowledge—while valuable—can become a roadblock when it outweighs experimentation.Drawing from behavioral research and personal experiences, I examine how limiting choices can unlock action, how micro-experiments drive clarity, and how maintaining a beginner's mindset—even as seasoned professionals—is essential to navigating fast-changing environments. I explore the difference between naïve optimism and strategic experimentation, and why getting things “right” matters less than having the courage to test, learn, and adjust. This episode is a call to shift our relationship with action. Instead of seeking perfect answers, we can embrace a culture where thoughtful trial, fast iteration, and small failures lead to smarter decisions and long-term growth.
This week, I'm catching up with an old friend and long-time triathlon devotee, Tim Ashelford. With over 35 years in the sport, Tim has quietly built a life around consistent training, minimal injuries, and a mindset that favours long-term health over short-term glory. Together we explore: The early days of UK triathlon clubs (and some very questionable kit choices!) Why Tim chose not to pursue Ironman long-term The underestimated value of sprint and standard-distance racing How to stay healthy, consistent, and enthusiastic after 60 The training and lifestyle tweaks that support performance as we age We also touch on smart nutrition, strength training, sleep, and that all-important lesson of not training through niggles. Tim's story is a powerful reminder that you don't have to chase volume or sacrifice joy to stay fit for life. If you'd like to follow Tim there are several channels you can choose from. In this episode of How to Study the Bible, we dive into week two of the "Take Action" series, focusing on Matthew 6. The Importance of Having the Right Motives When Giving, Praying, and Fasting In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus emphasizes the significance of having the right motives when engaging in spiritual practices such as giving, praying, and fasting. This teaching is crucial for understanding how to live as citizens of the Kingdom of God, as it highlights the difference between outward actions and the inner motivations that drive those actions. 1. Understanding the "When" Statements Jesus introduces three key "when" statements in Matthew chapter six: "when you give," "when you pray," and "when you fast." These statements assume that these practices will be integral to a believer's life. However, Jesus is not merely concerned with the actions themselves; He is deeply interested in the motivations behind them. Giving: Jesus warns against giving to be seen by others, stating that those who do so have already received their reward. Instead, He encourages giving in secret, where the focus is on pleasing God rather than seeking human approval. Praying: Similarly, Jesus instructs His followers to avoid public displays of prayer intended for recognition. Instead, He advocates for private prayer, emphasizing that God sees what is done in secret and will reward those who seek Him sincerely. Fasting: When it comes to fasting, Jesus again points out the danger of performing this act for the sake of appearance. He encourages His followers to fast in a way that is not obvious to others, reinforcing the idea that fasting should be about drawing closer to God rather than seeking the admiration of people. 2. The Wrong Motives Throughout this teaching, it is clear that Jesus identifies specific wrong motives associated with these practices. The desire for recognition, honor, or validation from others can lead to a focus on self rather than on God. This self-centered approach ultimately undermines the true purpose of these spiritual disciplines. Recognition: If the motivation for giving, praying, or fasting is to be seen as generous, pious, or disciplined, then the individual has already received their reward in the form of human applause. This is a temporary and superficial reward that lacks eternal significance. Self-Righteousness: Engaging in these practices to appear holy or superior to others can lead to a false sense of righteousness. Jesus challenges this mindset by calling for authenticity and sincerity in one's relationship with God. 3. The Right Motives In contrast, Jesus invites His followers to engage in these practices with the right motives—those that seek to honor God and align with His will. The emphasis is on the heart's intention rather than the outward display of spirituality. Seeking God's Approval: The true reward comes from God, who sees the heart and recognizes genuine acts of faith. When believers give, pray, or fast with the intention of drawing closer to God and serving others, they align themselves with the values of the Kingdom. Impact of Secret Acts: This teaching highlights the power of secret acts of devotion. Many struggle to believe that private prayers or hidden acts of kindness can have a significant impact. However, Jesus reassures His followers that these actions are powerful in God's eyes and contribute to a deeper relationship with Him. 4. The Conditional "If" Statement The teaching also discusses the conditional "if" statement found in verse 14 regarding forgiveness. Jesus states, "if you forgive," indicating that forgiveness is a choice that believers must actively make. This choice reflects the heart's posture and willingness to extend grace, which is essential for receiving God's forgiveness in return. 5. The Do-Nots Finally, Jesus provides two "do-nots" that further emphasize the importance of motives: Do Not Store Up Treasures on Earth: This warning serves as a reminder that material possessions should not take precedence over spiritual wealth. The focus should be on generosity and the eternal impact of one's actions. Do Not Worry: Jesus encourages His followers to trust in God's provision rather than being consumed by anxiety about their needs. This trust is rooted in the understanding that God cares for His creation and will provide for those who seek Him first. Want to send Nicole a question for a future Listener Questions episode? How might public policy positively impact our drastically declining birth rate?President Trump has suggested that all new parents receive a one-time $5,000 payout in the hopes of encouraging people to have more children. You likely had some kind of strong reaction to this statement. Whether that was surprise at a Republican recommending a social support, concern about forcing people to have more kids, or annoyance at how insignificant an amount is on the table—you're definitely not alone. It's clear that people are having fewer babies these days. But it's the reasons behind this fact that are sometimes in question and need to be addressed. In this episode, I take a closer look at, and share my thoughts on, how policy has—and potentially could—impact plummeting birth rates in the U.S. and beyond. 63% of Americans say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, and yet here we are. So what can we do to make the language around abortion more positive? My guest today is Sophie Nir. Sophie is the CEO of the Abortion Positivity Project. The Abortion Positivity Project seeks to destigmatize abortion by more or less overhauling the framework by which we currently understand and discuss it.They've developed a training curriculum on embracing abortion positive messaging in partnership with other nonprofit orgs and mission-aligned companies. Their goal is simple: educate everyone about abortion, expand the lens through which we all view abortion and ignite peer-to-peer conversations about reframing abortion discourse.Sophie is the former executive director of Eleanor's Legacy, as well as the former finance director for New York State Attorney General Leticia James. She's the founder of Vaccine Vigilantes, which is a fucking incredible name, and a veteran of the campaigns of many prominent women elected officials.-----------Have feedback or questions?
