If you've been following the financial news lately, you may have noticed something unusual: the bond market is getting a lot of attention. After a year of tariff shocks, interest-rate whiplash, tax policy changes and persistent questions about inflation and the national debt, bonds have moved from the financial pages into the broader economic conversation. And whenever markets get nervous about where the economy, inflation or government borrowing may be headed, attention tends to turn pretty quickly to the bond market.Because this isn't just Wall Street inside baseball. The bond market influences the interest rate on your mortgage. It influences how much the federal government pays to borrow money. It affects companies trying to finance everything from infrastructure to AI data centers. And it can offer some important clues about how investors are feeling about inflation, growth, recession risk and even the creditworthiness of the United States. So perhaps it's time we understood bonds a little better. And I have to admit, after more than a decade of hosting So Money, I don't think we've ever dedicated an entire episode to them.Today, we are fixing that.My guest is Robin Wigglesworth, one of the financial journalists who has been covering these markets up close for years. Robin is an editor at the Financial Times, where he leads FT Alphaville, its influential markets and finance blog. He's also the author of Trillions, his acclaimed history of the index-fund revolution and the rise of passive investing and ETFs.His new book is called A Fabulous Debt: The Epic Story of How Bonds Built the Modern World, and it comes out September 22.And I should emphasize: this is not a book about how to build a bond portfolio.Robin has written essentially a people's history of the bond market — and somehow made bonds genuinely entertaining. The story begins in Venice in 1171, takes us through Amsterdam and the development of modern finance, and brings us to America and Alexander Hamilton, whose decisions about government debt helped establish the creditworthiness of the young United States.Robin's larger argument is that we tend to think the stock market is the star of the financial system, when really the bond market is the foundation underneath it. In fact, as he tells me in our conversation, bonds are the “bedrock that the entire house rests upon.”We talk about what the 10-year Treasury yield can tell you about the economy — and why it matters more to mortgage rates than many people realize. We talk about America's nearly $40 trillion national debt and the big question: At what point does all of this borrowing actually become a problem? We also get into something I found fascinating: bonds have quietly financed some of the biggest transformations in modern history. Railroads. Canals. Telecommunications. The internet. And now, potentially, the enormous buildout of artificial intelligence. There are also fraudsters, scoundrels and some truly wild financial schemes along the way — including one man who essentially invented an entire country so he could sell its bondsLearn more about Farnoosh's upcoming literary workshop Book to Brand. In this episode we answer emails from Pete, Mark, and Jack. We thank our generous donors and share the preliminary results of the Top of the T-Shirt campaign for the Father McKenna Center, discuss recent machinations of the US Treasury Department and why its more of the same old story, and discuss some basics of accumulation portfolios and the preeminence of the Macro-Allocation Principle, and using risk-parity style portfolios for intermediate accumulation. And THEN we our go through our weekly portfolio reviews of the eight sample portfolios you can find at Portfolios | Risk Parity Radio.Links:Father McKenna Center Donation Page (please mention Risk Parity Radio in the comment section with your donation): Donate - Father McKenna CenterMark's Claude Discussion Link: ClaudeTestfolio Comparison of Sample Accumulation Portfolios: Portfolio Backtester for ETFs and Asset Allocation | testfolioBreathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:A tiny Treasury headline can spark a full-blown “the system is ending” spiral, and we get why. So we slow it down and look at what actually matters for investors: how policy actions, inflation expectations, and interest-rate narratives ripple through stocks, long-term Treasury bonds, gold, commodities, and managed futures and why trying to predict the next move usually makes portfolios worse, not better. We also share a meaningful community update as our listener donations push the Father McKenna Center's Top of the T-Shirt campaign back into a leading spot. The money helps keep real services running for people who need it, and it also reinforces a theme we come back to often: investing is a tool, not the point. Time is limited, behavior matters, and a steady plan beats a dramatic one. From there we tackle an accumulation-phase question that a lot of DIY investors wrestle with: how to split large-cap growth (VUG) with small-cap value (VIOV or AVUV), where to place each fund across taxable, Roth, and pre-tax accounts, and why we don't assume one style will “win” forever. We dig into the logic of rebalancing and “Shannon's demon,” plus when it makes sense to upgrade fund choices and when switching creates avoidable tax pain. Then we close with our weekly market snapshot and performance across the eight sample portfolios, including the more volatile leveraged experiments. If you found this helpful, subscribe, share it with a friend who's doom-scrolling financial news, and leave us a rating and review so more investors can find the show.Support the show

In this episode, Andrew discusses the outlook for gold and silver prices, why silver coins may offer advantages for new precious metals buyers, and why physical metals serve a different purpose than ETFs or mining stocks. He also explains why gold and silver prices could benefit from continued currency devaluation and growing demand. Andrew examines silver's role in renewable energy, electrification, manufacturing, robotics, and investment demand, while discussing the possibility that silver could eventually outperform gold. He also shares his experience buying physical silver, explains why he prefers recognizable silver coins for potential barter, and discusses risks across bonds, currencies, mining stocks, and traditional financial markets.
Tarek Saab, CEO of Texas Precious Metals, joins Trevor Hall on Mining Stock Daily for a wide-ranging conversation about entrepreneurship, precious metals, hard assets and the accelerating migration of financial capital to Texas.Tarek shares his unconventional path from growing up in an immigrant family in Massachusetts to becoming an electrical engineer at Texas Instruments, appearing on The Apprentice, losing nearly everything during the Global Financial Crisis, and ultimately building one of the largest precious metals businesses in the United States. He explains how those experiences shaped his views on money, risk and entrepreneurship—and why learning about the long-term depreciation of the dollar ultimately led him toward gold. The conversation then turns to what differentiates Texas Precious Metals in a business where the underlying product is a commodity. Tarek explains why the company views trust, speed, inventory and customer experience as its real products, along with the logistical challenges of delivering and storing increasingly valuable physical gold and silver. Tarek and Trevor also discuss Y'all Street, Texas Precious Metals' gold and silver ETFs, the development of precious-metals infrastructure inside the United States, and why Tarek believes Texas is positioned to capture a growing share of global financial activity. With financial firms, exchanges, technology companies and capital increasingly moving into the state, could the center of American finance eventually shift away from New York and toward Texas? ______Terrahutton empowers junior mining companies to secure investment with immersive, interactive, and visually striking storytelling. A Note from James:In 1790, one of the easiest ways to get rich in America was the old-fashioned way: marry someone rich.George Washington did pretty well that way. Benjamin Franklin, meanwhile, was so deep in debt that he offered to marry a woman if her parents would mortgage their house to pay off his printing press debt. When they said no, he married someone else who had money. And back then, debt was not just annoying. It could land you in debtor's prison. Actual prison. And not just you—your wife and kids could go too.Fast-forward to the 1900s, and most Americans still were not buying stocks. Only a tiny percentage owned shares. Everyday people were gambling, playing the numbers, using dream-interpretation books to decide what lottery number to play, and trying to find some edge that would move them a little closer to security. My guest today, Joseph Moore, literally wrote the book on this: How to Get Rich in American History: 300 Years of Financial Advice That Worked (& Didn't).The book is full of strange, funny, surprising stories about money in America: Franklin, Washington, debtor's prison, the Great Depression, bucket shops, real estate booms, FIRE, crypto, debt, index funds, and all the scams people keep falling for.But the bigger lesson is that the basic patterns have not changed as much as we think.People want security. People want freedom. People want hope. People want a way out. And whenever there is hope, there is usually someone selling a formula.Joseph has very little patience for the usual personal finance myths. Debt does not make you rich. Opportunity makes you rich. Real estate is not always a magic wealth machine. The stock market was not designed to be everyone's retirement plan. FIRE can work, but it can also become the CrossFit of personal finance. And optimism, marriage, mobility, risk, and solving other people's problems may matter more than almost anything else.If you think the rules for getting rich have changed completely, this conversation may convince you how little human nature has changed.Episode Description:Joseph Moore joins James to talk about the long, strange history of getting rich in America. His book, How to Get Rich in American History, looks at 300 years of financial advice—what worked, what failed, what people kept repeating, and what today's money culture keeps forgetting. The conversation starts in 1790, with George Washington, Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Stephen Girard, debt, leverage, and debtor's prison. Joseph explains that many early American fortunes were built through risk, borrowed money, marriage, luck, and then—critically—de-leveraging over time. That becomes one of the core lessons of the episode: debt does not make people rich. Opportunity does. Debt is only a tool that allows someone to grab more of an opportunity than they otherwise could. But if the opportunity is not real, or the person cannot handle the risk, debt destroys them.James and Joseph then move into real estate. Joseph argues that real estate is a good way to build a modest middle-class fortune, but not usually the path to the biggest fortunes. In modern America, he says, real estate often functions as a short on the dollar, an income annuity in a low-dividend world, a tax shelter, and a way for ordinary people to use leverage they could not access anywhere else. But that does not make buying a house automatically smart. Renting versus buying depends on age, mobility, location, family needs, inflation, taxes, maintenance, transaction costs, and opportunity cost. The conversation then turns to the stock market. Joseph challenges the usual historical charts that claim anyone could have invested a fixed sum in 1929 and held forever. Most Americans could not invest that way. There were no index funds, mutual funds had high fees, and buying an index directly required enormous capital. Instead, everyday people went to bucket shops, bet on price moves, played the numbers, and treated gambling as a kind of financial hope.James and Joseph also discuss passive investing, shadow indexing, the rise of ETFs and 401(k)s, and the way the stock market has become a mass retirement promise. Joseph points out that this is historically new. For most of American history, no ordinary person would have expected to retire on the stock market. From there, the episode moves to FIRE: financial independence, retire early. Joseph has lived part of that story himself. He built enough wealth through rental real estate after 2008 to stop working for a period, only to discover that early retirement was not automatically fulfilling. He compares FIRE to CrossFit: extreme, demanding, sometimes powerful, sometimes injurious, and not a lifestyle most people actually want. The final section asks the big question: What has consistently worked?Joseph boils the lessons down to five pillars: solve other people's problems, take risks, move toward opportunity, marry well, and believe you can. James adds that optimism matters because it keeps people in the game long enough to get more shots on goal. The result is a conversation about money, but also about history, risk, luck, marriage, mobility, discipline, scams, and the difference between getting rich and staying rich. What You'll Learn:Why early American wealth often involved marriage, leverage, luck, and risk. How George Washington's marriage to Martha helped fund the Washington we remember. Why Benjamin Franklin's public advice about debt did not match his own early financial behavior. What debtor's prison meant in early America, including the risk to families. Why debt is a tool, not a wealth strategy by itself. Why opportunity—not debt—is what actually makes people rich. Why real estate can build middle-class wealth but rarely creates the biggest fortunes. How buying a home can reduce mobility and opportunity, especially for younger people. Why renting versus buying is situational, not a universal rule. Why most Americans historically could not invest in the stock market the way modern charts imply. What bucket shops and “the numbers” reveal about everyday financial hope. How passive investing changed the purpose of the stock market. Why stock-market concentration is not new, but mass participation is.Why FIRE can work mathematically and still fail psychologically. How older financial-independence stories often hid trust funds, inheritances, or outside support. Why inflation is one of the biggest risks to early retirement. Why getting rich and staying rich require different behavior. Why successful people often take risk early and reduce risk later. Why optimism is financially useful when it keeps people in the game. The five recurring pillars Joseph sees across American wealth-building history.Timestamped Chapters:[05:00] How to Get Rich in 1790James asks Joseph how someone got rich in early America, starting with George Washington, Martha Washington, and marriage as a financial strategy.[07:24] Stephen Girard and Benjamin Franklin's DebtJoseph compares Stephen Girard's leveraged rise with Franklin's messy early business debts.[10:29] Debt Does Not Make You RichJoseph explains that opportunity creates wealth, while debt simply lets someone reach for more of that opportunity.[11:23] Debtor's Prison Was RealJoseph explains why failing in the 1790s could mean prison not only for the debtor, but for the debtor's family.[12:25] The Real Estate MythJoseph argues that real estate can build modest wealth, but rarely creates the biggest fortunes.[13:43] Real Estate as a Short on the DollarJoseph explains modern real estate as an inflation bet, income annuity, tax shelter, and leverage tool.[15:22] You Need an EdgeJames argues that every bet has someone on the other side, which means investors need to know what their advantage actually is.[16:18] Beating the Market, Missing the MomentJoseph tells the story of shorting Jim Cramer stock pops, beating the market net of theory, losing to fees, and missing his daughter's first steps.[19:56] Shadow Passive InvestingJames and Joseph discuss hedge funds, index tracking, fees, and the way much of Wall Street quietly follows the same big benchmarks.[20:31] The Index RevolutionJoseph explains why Vanguard's 1976 index fund changed investing for ordinary Americans—and why passive investing may create new structural risks.[24:24] The Four Percent of Stocks That MatterJames and Joseph discuss stock-market returns, T-bills, concentration, and why a small number of companies drive most gains.[25:16] The Second Bank CrashJoseph compares modern market concentration to the 1830s, when the Second Bank of the United States made up a huge share of the stock market before collapsing.[26:21] The Stock Market as a Retirement PromiseJoseph explains why turning the stock market into a mass retirement strategy is historically new.[29:58] The Problem With “The Chart”Joseph criticizes the classic financial-advisor chart that assumes someone in 1929 invested a large sum, held forever, and never touched it.[31:17] Bucket Shops and Playing the NumbersJoseph explains how everyday people used gambling, bucket shops, and lottery-like games as financial hope when stock ownership was out of reach.[34:04] The Mean Moves Through TimeJoseph explains why history is not physics and why the “average” keeps changing as the economy changes.[35:49] Renting vs. BuyingJames and Joseph debate the homeownership myth, maintenance, taxes, transaction costs, mobility, family stability, and when buying can make sense.[41:02] FIRE and the Question of EnoughJames asks how much is enough in 2026, and Joseph explains why the answer depends on location, expectations, security, and lifestyle.[44:24] FIRE as the CrossFit of Personal FinanceJoseph compares FIRE to an extreme discipline that can work for some people but injure others if they push too hard.[45:38] Geoarbitrage and Selling the DreamJames and Joseph discuss moving somewhere cheaper, Instagram FIRE influencers, and the difference between living the dream and monetizing the dream.[46:00] The Long History of Financial IndependenceJoseph traces earlier versions of FIRE through Sylvester Judd, Thoreau, Emerson, and Helen and Scott Nearing.[49:17] Inflation and the FIRE RiskJoseph explains how Your Money or Your Life and bond-heavy financial independence strategies ran into changing interest-rate realities.[50:23] Five Pillars of Getting RichJoseph lays out the durable lessons: solve problems, take risks, move more, marry well, and believe you can.[53:43] Marriage, Optimism, and Staying in the GameJames and Joseph talk about supportive partnership, optimism, savings discipline, and why staying in the game increases opportunity.[56:11] The Line Between Optimism and RecklessnessJoseph distinguishes productive optimism from gambling and explains why control over outcomes matters.[58:28] Getting Rich vs. Staying RichJoseph explains why many wealthy people take risk early, then de-lever over time to keep what they built.[01:00:00] Leverage, Trading, and the Guy Who Never StopsJames and Joseph discuss extreme leverage, Bitcoin futures, Jesse Livermore, gamblers, and why some people cannot walk away.Additional Resources:Joseph Moore - History HelpsHow to Get Rich in American History - Book PageHow to Get Rich in American Bitcoin finally broke $80K, but it could not hold it. That makes today's price action a rejection, not a confirmed breakout. The good news is that Bitcoin has real demand underneath it: U.S. spot ETFs took in another $232 million Wednesday, extending their positive streak to eight trading sessions and roughly $2.8 billion. The bad news is hotter inflation has markets reconsidering Fed tightening just as Bitcoin is trying to turn $80K into support. The most interesting story now is Kevin Warsh. His Fed philosophy isn't simply lower rates and more money. Warsh wants to shrink the Fed balance sheet while potentially creating room for lower interest rates, meaning Bitcoin could get cheaper money without getting another giant round of QE. That makes tomorrow's Jackson Hole speech important because crypto traders need to start watching the Fed balance sheet, Treasury liquidity, yields and the dollar together, not just whether Warsh cuts rates. For price, $80K remains the wall, but the bigger breakout zone is increasingly looking like $81K-$86K, with roughly $83K an important confirmation level. If ETF inflows continue and Warsh does not turn aggressively hawkish, Bitcoin gets another shot. If inflation pushes the Fed toward tighter policy and ETF demand fades, Bitcoin could spend more time consolidating in the upper $70Ks.Happy HODLing. Hosted on Acast. Mabel Nunez is the founder & Chief Education Officer at Girl$ on The Money – a stock market investing education company targeted toward individuals who are underrepresented in the investing world. Mabel grew up in the South Bronx as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, with limited resources & a strong emphasis on education from her father. She learned very little about personal finance or investing while in school until she was in college, where she took an investing analysis class which began her passion for investing & personal finance. Mabel holds both a Bachelor of Science and an MBA in Finance. However, most of what she's learned about investing came from experience. Mabel's mission is to teach what she's learned (and continues to learn) since starting her investing journey. She is passionate about transforming investing beginners into confident, knowledgeable, and profitable investors. In this episode, Mabel shares: How fear kept her from starting to invest, despite graduating as a finance major, reading articles and listening to shows on investing How she has been investing for 16 years with a focus on individual stocks in a self-directed taxable account. She invests in companies with long-term potential, rarely selling stocks and preferring a Warren Buffett-style strategy That investing in ETFs or index funds, such as the S&P 500, can be a simpler alternative to buying individual stocks & advises against buying "cheap stocks" or investing in unproven companies. How she struggled to tell her parents about quitting her 9-5 stable job to pursue her passion & the challenge of balancing personal dreams with family expectations, particularly for immigrant families + much more! Gold, Bitcoin, and bonds are sending very important signals right now if you're paying attention. Today we talk about the growing concerns in the bond market, including surging Treasury yields, government intervention, persistent inflation, massive deficits, and the potential impact on mortgage rates and the housing market. We also cover recent moves in stocks, gold, silver, Bitcoin, commodities, and the dollar, with gold showing particular strength as investors seek alternatives amid bond-market uncertainty and concerns about currency debasement. We explore growing demand for precious metals, central-bank gold buying, silver's industrial demand from AI and infrastructure, and the possibility of further volatility from the paper-to-physical gold market. As always, remain cautious, watch market reactions rather than headlines, and pay close attention to what happens after Labor Day as investors return and markets establish a clearer direction. We discuss... Bond yields surged to multi-decade highs, raising concerns about inflation, government deficits, and financial stability. The U.S. Treasury intervened in the long-end of the bond market to help control rising borrowing costs. Investors are increasingly demanding higher term premiums because of massive government debt issuance and persistent deficits. Rising Treasury yields pushed 30-year mortgage rates back above 6.6%, adding pressure to an already frozen housing market. The S&P 500 has remained near the top of its trading range while the Nasdaq has largely moved sideways. Gold surged unexpectedly, with its strength potentially reflecting investor concerns about the bond market and a search for safe-haven assets. Silver has moved alongside gold, suggesting healthier momentum across precious metals than seen during previous periods of divergence. The dollar remains within a broader trading range, making its direction an important indicator of overall market health. Persistent inflation and uncertainty over Federal Reserve policy are pushing investors to reconsider expectations for interest-rate cuts. Geopolitical tensions involving Iran and potential energy supply disruptions could add further inflationary pressure through higher oil prices. Trade tensions and tariffs involving the United States, Canada, and Mexico were discussed as another source of economic uncertainty. Central-bank gold purchases, de-dollarization concerns, and demand for physical bullion are contributing to gold's strength. Bitcoin's recent rally was linked to changing regulation, global liquidity, bond-market conditions, and increased institutional access through spot ETFs. Bitcoin's price action was described as increasingly influenced by global liquidity and bond yields rather than its internal supply schedule alone. Today's guest is Jerry Parker, founder and CEO of Chesapeake Capital and one of the original Turtles trained by Richard Dennis. Together we run the Cambria Chesapeake Pure Trend ETF (MFUT). In today's episode, Jerry explains why managed futures isn't the same as trend following. He breaks down the math and psychology of hunting outliers, letting a few winners pay for many small losses, and why he'd never chase crisis alpha at the cost of returns. To close, Jerry explains why MFUT trades individual stocks rather than just indices. Learn more about the Cambria Chesapeake Pure Trend ETF www.cambriafunds.com/mfut Have questions? MFUT: This fund is new and has a limited operating history. There is no guarantee that the Fund will achieve its investment goal. Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. Commodities Risk: Exposure to the commodities markets may subject the Fund to greater volatility than investments in traditional securities. Fixed Income Securities Risk: The prices of fixed income securities respond to economic developments, particularly interest rate changes, as well as to changes in an issuer's credit rating or market perceptions about the creditworthiness of an issuer. Foreign Securities Risk: The Fund may invest in foreign securities. Such investments involve certain risks not involved in domestic investments and may experience more rapid and extreme changes in value than investments in securities of U.S. companies. Leverage Risk: The derivative instruments in which the Fund may invest provide the economic effect of financial leverage by creating additional investment exposure to the underlying instrument, as well as the potential for greater loss. If the Fund uses leverage through purchasing derivative instruments, the Fund has the risk that losses may exceed the net assets of the Fund. Derivatives Risk: Derivatives are financial instruments that derive value from the underlying reference asset or assets, such as stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, funds (including ETFs), interest rates or indexes. Short Selling Risk: If a security sold short or other instrument increases in price, the Fund may have to cover its short position at a higher price than the short sale price, resulting in a loss. Commodity-Linked Derivatives Tax Risk: The tax treatment of commodity-linked derivative instruments may be adversely affected by changes in legislation, regulations, or other legally binding authority. Non-Diversification Risk: Because the Fund is “non-diversified,” it may invest a greater percentage of its assets in the securities of a single issuer or a smaller number of issuers than if it was a diversified fund. Commodities Risk. Exposure to the commodities markets may subject the Fund to greater volatility than investments in traditional securities. Fixed Income Securities Risk. The prices of fixed income securities respond to economic developments, particularly interest rate changes, as well as to changes in an issuer's credit rating or market perceptions about the creditworthiness of an issuer. Foreign Securities Risk. The Fund may invest in foreign securities. Such investments involve certain risks not involved in domestic investments and may experience more rapid and extreme changes in value than investments in securities of U.S. companies. Leverage Risk. The derivative instruments in which the Fund may invest provide the economic effect of financial leverage by creating additional investment exposure to the underlying instrument, as well as the potential for greater loss. If the Fund uses leverage through purchasing derivative instruments, the Fund has the risk that losses may exceed the net assets of the Fund. Derivatives Risk. Derivatives are financial instruments that derive value from the underlying reference asset or assets, such as stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, funds (including ETFs), interest rates or indexes. Short Selling Risk. If a security sold short or other instrument increases in price, the Fund may have to cover its short position at a higher price than the short sale price, resulting in a loss. Commodity-Linked Derivatives Tax Risk. The tax treatment of commodity-linked derivative instruments may be adversely affected by changes in legislation, regulations, or other legally binding authority. Non-Diversification Risk. Because the Fund is “non-diversified,” it may invest a greater percentage of its assets in the securities of a single issuer or a smaller number of issuers than if it was a diversified fund. New Fund Risk. The Fund is a recently organized management investment company with no operating history. Diversification does not guarantee against a loss. Definitions: Alpha: The portion of an investment's return that differs from its benchmark after adjusting for risk, measured over a specific historical period and not predictive of future results. Crisis Alpha: Returns a strategy seeks to generate during periods of significant equity market stress — a stated objective, not a guaranteed or expected outcome. Stop Loss: A standing order to sell a security once it reaches a specified price, which does not guarantee execution at that price in fast-moving or gapping markets. Trailing Stop: A stop order set at a fixed distance from the market price that adjusts upward as the price rises and holds when it falls, carrying the same execution risks as a stop loss. Shorting: Selling a borrowed security intending to repurchase it later, which profits if the price falls and carries theoretically unlimited loss potential if the price rises. Correlation: A statistical measure of how two assets move relative to one another, ranging from -1.0 to +1.0, which changes over time and often rises during market stress. Derivatives: Financial contracts deriving value from an underlying asset, rate, or index — including futures, options, and swaps — that may involve leverage, counterparty risk, and losses exceeding the initial investment. Futures: Standardized exchange-traded contracts to buy or sell an asset at a set price on a future date, traded on margin so that leverage magnifies both gains and losses. Long: Owning or holding a position expected to benefit from an increase in the price of the underlying asset. S&P GSCI (formerly the Goldman Sachs Commodity Index): A production-weighted, energy-heavy index of commodity futures created by Goldman Sachs in 1991 and acquired by S&P in 2007, which is unmanaged and cannot be invested in directly. Get Stopped Out: Having a position closed automatically when a stop order triggers, which can occur on a temporary price move and exit the position before any recovery. MSCI EAFE Index: A market-capitalization-weighted index of developed-market equities outside the US and Canada, covering Europe, Australasia, and the Far East, which is unmanaged and not directly investable. MSCI Emerging Markets Index: A market-capitalization-weighted index of equities across emerging-market countries, which is unmanaged and not directly investable. Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA): An individual or firm advising others on futures, options on futures, or certain swaps, generally required to register with the CFTC and join the NFA — registration that implies no skill level or regulatory endorsement.
Craig says Bitcoin's 26% weekly move changed the higher-timeframe picture. After weeks of frustrating sideways action, the three-month and six-month charts are now showing structures that have historically appeared near the end of major selling periods. He is not calling the exact bottom, but he believes the market is giving stronger evidence that the next major trend could be higher, especially as ETFs and digital-asset treasury companies change the structure of this cycle. The episode also explains why Craig was never committed to an October low, how he uses both time and price when evaluating long-term Bitcoin entries, and why he prefers capturing the middle of a trend rather than trying to perfectly buy the bottom or sell the top. He's the guy behind "Betty (Get Money)" and a fur coat two-step that took over TikTok, but before Yung Gravy was flexing platinum plaques, he was studying finance and marketing in college. Today on Money Rehab, we sit down with the rapper who lives a double life: viral hitmaker by night, options trader by day. Gravy walks us through the trade that made him $400K, a bet on 1-800-Flowers stock at the start of COVID, built on a grim but accurate read that funeral orders were about to spike. It's the kind of call institutional investors make quietly all the time; Gravy just said the quiet part out loud, and the internet has been arguing about the ethics of it ever since. We get into how a music-industry paycheck, unpredictable, front-loaded, gone as fast as the trend that made it, pushed him to actually learn the market instead of just spending like a rapper. What it's like sitting in a room with a finance background while everyone assumes you can't do math because you rap about money instead of manage it. Where the rap flex ends and the real portfolio begins. And whether the same instincts that write a viral hook are the same instincts that spot an undervalued stock before anyone else does. In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, we break down 10 common mistakes that investors make and how they can hurt long-term returns. We discuss the danger of overconcentration, why chasing the hottest trade can derail a sound strategy, and how investors can get lured in by massive revenue growth while ignoring risks hiding on the balance sheet. We also cover emotional mistakes like fear of missing out, fear of losses, overconfidence, confirmation bias, anchoring to your cost basis, and the sunk cost fallacy. Along the way, we share examples from our own investing experience, including lessons learned from crypto, growth stocks, Telus, Shopify, Allied Properties REIT, and other situations where process mattered more than short-term results. Whether you invest in individual stocks, ETFs, dividend stocks, or a mix of everything, this episode is a reminder that avoiding big mistakes can be just as important as finding big winners. Stijn Schmitz welcomes back Michael Oliver from Momentum Structural Analysis MSA to the show. Michael Oliver opens the discussion by highlighting what he considers the most explosive signal in his decades-long career: the historic undervaluation of gold and silver miners relative to gold. He explained that for decades, the XAU index averaged around 25% of the gold price, but this ratio has collapsed and is currently trading near 9%. Oliver pointed to a critical technical breakout occurring in the GDX-to-gold spread, which is moving above a 13-year resistance range. This breakout, he argued, is a powerful signal not just for miners to vastly outperform the metal, but also for an impending dramatic price advance in gold itself, as the spread only rises during precious metals bull runs. The conversation shifted to the broader macroeconomic backdrop, where Oliver identified a “nuclear” government bond crisis as the primary catalyst. He warned that the US Treasury market is far larger than the stock market and is now slipping into quarter-century lows in price, reflecting extreme distrust among investors. Oliver stated that central banks will have no choice but to print money aggressively to defend their debt markets, which will further degrade the currency unit and propel gold higher. He believes this environment will force large asset managers to rotate out of an overvalued stock market, where key financial sector ETFs are showing imminent technical breakdowns, into a vastly underpriced commodity sector. Regarding other commodities, Oliver maintained that silver is the single most explosive market, being historically repressed relative to gold and the broader money supply. He suggested that if silver merely caught up to the rise seen in other metals since the 1980s, a price of $500 would not be shocking. On oil, he argued it remains vastly underpriced relative to both its historical highs and the decay of the dollar, predicting a broad repricing of commodities as an asset class. Finally, Oliver cautioned that the US dollar index is on the verge of a sharp decline, breaking down from a year-long consolidation, which could accelerate gold's rally and inflict further damage on US equities. J. Michael Oliver entered the financial services industry in 1975 on the Futures side, joining E.F. Hutton’s International Commodity Division, headquartered in New York City’s Battery Park. He studied under David Johnston, head of Hutton’s Commodity Division and Chairman of the COMEX. In the 1980s, Mike began to develop his proprietary momentum-based method of technical analysis. He learned early on that orthodox price chart technical analysis left many unanswered questions and too often deceived those who trusted in price chart breakouts, support/resistance, and so forth. In 1987 Mike technically anticipated and caught the Crash. It was then that he decided to develop his structural momentum tools into a full analytic methodology. In 1992, the Financial VP and head of Wachovia Bank’s Trust Department asked Mike to provide soft dollar research to Wachovia. Within a year, Mike shifted from brokerage to full-time technical analysis. He is also the author of The New Libertarianism: Anarcho-Capitalism.

Bitcoin gained roughly $12,000 on the week, and the hosts read the second leg through $72,000 as evidence of real buying rather than short liquidations alone Bitcoin reclaimed its 200-day moving average and pushed roughly 20% above its 200-week, after six weeks of trading along that longer average in the mid to low sixties Isaiah cites the market adage that nothing good happens below the 200-day, and notes that breaking back above it with strength is what makes the move notable James Check's realized profit and loss work frames bear markets in three phases, price pain, time pain, and bears in pain, with this week marking the third Brady and Isaiah revisit a thesis they have argued on the show for over a year, that ETFs and corporate treasury demand would put a floor under this cycle The drawdown reached roughly 50% from the $126,000 high, against 75% to 83% in the three previous bear markets, which the hosts attribute partly to a more restrained bull market and partly to declining volatility as Bitcoin monetizes The US Treasury bought about $4 billion of long-dated bonds to pull yields down, the effect lasted about 24 hours, and Treasury Secretary Bessent signaled larger and more frequent purchases ahead Isaiah compares the operation to Operation Twist and calls it quantitative easing by another name, monetizing debt without using the term, with no political will to curtail spending The hosts discuss capital potentially rotating back to Bitcoin from AI, where frontier labs are spending heavily without profitability while open source models close the gap The conversation closes on what debasement costs beyond prices, first-time buyers reaching their forties, delayed family formation, and the disappearance of building for generations rather than quarters ► For high-net-worth individuals and corporations seeking to build generational wealth with Bitcoin, Swan Private is your guide ✔ https://www.swanbitcoin.com/private?utm_campaign=private&utm_medium=sponsorship&utm_source=podcast&utm_content=swan_signal_live ► Secure your bright orange future with the Swan IRA today! After a historic rally and a sharp correction, South Korea's equity market may be approaching a turning point. Our Chief Korea Equity Strategist, Joon Seok, explains that the next cycle will need stronger foundations and more sectors joining in.Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Joon Seok, Morgan Stanley's Chief Korea Equity Strategist.Today: Why Korea's equity market may be moving from a sharp reset toward a broader and more sustainable recovery. It's Tuesday, August 18th, at 2pm in Seoul.South Korea's stock market has delivered the kind of ride that makes even long-term investors check their phones more often than they would like. The KOSPI surged 101 percent in the first half of 2026, then fell more than 38 percent from its peak by July 30th. But the market now appears to be moving toward a more durable recovery. The first reason is valuation. Take the KOSPI's forward price-to-earnings ratio, which compares share prices with expected profits over the next year. It fell below five times, its lowest level since 2004. Our capitulation index also dropped to minus 2.53. This index combines market momentum with the breadth of the sell-off, so it helps show whether fear has become widespread. Readings below minus two have often marked troughing territory outside the major crises. The second reason is that forced selling appears to be easing. Now, we have seen leverage as a double-edged sword as leverage helped fuel the rally, but it also made the decline sharper as investors were forced to cut positions. Assets in leveraged single-stock ETFs have fallen about 70 percent from their June peak, and margin lending has also come down. Now, hedge funds have completed roughly three quarters of a typical risk-reduction cycle. Put simply, the most intense selling may already be behind us.Still, a healthier recovery needs more than a rebound by the tech sector. Tech remains central because AI infrastructure continues to drive demand for advanced memory. Morgan Stanley Research expects global spending by large tech platforms to reach 805 billion U.S. dollars in [20]26 and 1.2 trillion dollars in [20]27. That creates a lot of opportunity – but it also keeps markets sensitive to any change in capital spending, chip pricing or competition. The broader Korean economy offers support. Real GDP growth has exceeded 3 percent for two consecutive quarters, up sharply from 1.1 percent in 2025. Full-year growth is now likely to land in the mid-3 percent range; and generally, Korea's growth is around 2 percent. Importantly, the improvement is spreading beyond exports. Consumption is recovering, tourism has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, and the government is targeting 23 million foreign tourists this year. There are trade-offs. Inflation reached 3.2 percent in June, and the Bank of Korea raised its policy rate to 2.75 percent. A measured hiking cycle could take rates to 3.5 percent by the first quarter of 2027. Higher rates may help financial-sector earnings, but they also raise financing costs for households and businesses. The source of market liquidity is changing as well. Domestic retail investors drove much of the first-half rally, but tighter leverage rules mean foreign investors are likely to determine the next leg higher. Corporate-governance reforms and better capital management could also encourage broader international participation. We continue to see a path toward a KOSPI target of 9,000 by June 2027, with a bull case of 10,500 and a bear case of 5,500. The next phase should be steadier and more balanced. Industrials, financials, healthcare, communications, and consumer staples should also contribute alongside technology.Korea still has room to run. But the stronger signal may be quality – meaning earnings resilience, disciplined capital management and broader participation. The stock market's initial rally was fueled by speed and concentrated leadership. The next phase will require wider and more durable support. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the show, please leave us a review wherever you listen and share Thoughts on the Market with a friend or colleague today.

You were probably told to save money, build good credit, contribute to retirement accounts, work for several decades and eventually retire somewhere with a Costco membership and surprisingly strong opinions about thermostat settings. Mark Quann thinks that entire playbook deserves cross-examination. In ROI Podcast® #513, Law Smith and Eric Readinger talk with Mark Quann, founder of The Perfect Portfolio and author of Be Smart Pay Zero Taxes, about the wealth strategy known as Buy, Borrow, Die. Mark explains the basic idea: buy appreciating assets, avoid unnecessarily selling those assets, and potentially use loans secured by those investments to access liquidity instead. The conversation gets into margin loans, stocks and ETFs, real estate, life insurance, precious metals, Bitcoin, inflation, capital gains, financial education and why Mark believes wealthy investors think about debt differently. Law naturally stress-tests the strategy by asking how somebody should finance a cocaine habit. Somebody had to. Mark also explains why he's bullish on Bitcoin but considerably less affectionate toward the rest of crypto, why he questions conventional retirement and banking advice, and why he's teaching investment concepts to homeschool students young enough to still require permission to operate the toaster. His road into finance wasn't exactly Wharton-to-Goldman. Mark talks about dropping out of school, growing up poor, becoming a private investigator in Los Angeles, conducting workers' compensation surveillance, meeting Patrick Bet-David early in his career, becoming a financial advisor, writing books and eventually building The Perfect Portfolio. It's personal finance, investing, entrepreneurship, tax strategy, childhood LSD, private-investigator urine bottles and Eric somehow getting accused of racism. So, basically, Bloomberg with worse adult supervision. What if your retirement account is quietly funding companies and causes that conflict with your Christian convictions? Certified Financial Planner Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel explore Biblically Responsible Investing, Christian investing, and how fathers can build generational wealth without knowingly partnering with evil. Is investing in the stock market biblical? Does owning a small piece of a company make you morally responsible for what that company does? And how should Christians think about investments connected to abortion, pornography, alcohol, gambling, tobacco, ESG, and other practices that may conflict with biblical values? Steven and Mark explore these questions through the surprising lens of Exodus 21 and the biblical principle of an ox “known to gore.” Mark explains why he believes investing itself is biblical, while also arguing that ownership carries responsibility—and that Christians should take seriously the question of whether they are knowingly profiting from harm. The conversation gets practical as they discuss Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI), investment screening, direct indexing, Christian mutual funds and ETFs, and options including Timothy Plan, Inspire Investing, Praxis, Crossmark/OneAscent, and others. They also examine Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street, including how major asset managers have approached ESG and corporate shareholder voting in recent years. But the goal isn't perfect financial purity. As Mark explains, Christians cannot completely separate themselves from a fallen economy. The goal is faithful stewardship: building wealth and inheritance for your children's children while keeping your heart free from the love of money and avoiding known complicity with evil wherever reasonably possible. In this episode:• Is investing biblical?• What does Exodus 21's “goring ox” teach us about investment responsibility?• Does owning stock make you responsible for a company's actions?• What is Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI)?• How can Christians screen investments for abortion, pornography, alcohol, gambling, and tobacco?• Should Christians invest through Vanguard, BlackRock, or State Street?• What is direct indexing, and how can it be used for Christian investing?• Which Christian investment funds and platforms are worth researching?• How should Christian fathers balance financial growth, generational wealth, conscience, and faithful stewardship? For years, we've been told that blockchain technology would eventually transform Wall Street. Well... "Eventually" is starting to look a lot like RIGHT NOW. In today's episode, we're diving into one of the biggest developments yet in the convergence of traditional finance and digital assets: the DTCC's move to tokenize traditional securities. And this isn't some crypto startup experimenting with a proof of concept. The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) sits at the heart of the U.S. financial system, and its subsidiary DTC currently custodies more than $114 TRILLION in assets. Now, those assets are beginning to move on-chain. In July, DTCC successfully converted DTC-held traditional securities into digital tokens and used them in real production transactions, involving more than 30 major traditional and digital financial firms. The transactions included U.S. Treasuries, equities, securities lending, collateral and other institutional workflows. That's a BIG deal. We're no longer talking about whether Wall Street will adopt blockchain. We're watching the infrastructure being built right in front of us. On today's show, we'll break down: What tokenization actually means Why DTCC's involvement changes the conversation How a traditional stock or Treasury can become a tokenized asset Why Wall Street wants assets on blockchain networks The potential for faster settlement and greater asset mobility How tokenization could change collateral and liquidity management Why this could eventually lead toward extended trading hours Which blockchains and financial companies are participating What all of this could mean for cryptocurrency and digital-asset investors Perhaps most importantly, we'll look at what comes next. DTCC plans to officially launch its Tokenization Service in October 2026, initially allowing eligible DTC-custodied securities to be converted between traditional and tokenized forms. Eligible assets include constituents of the Russell 1000, ETFs tracking major indexes, and U.S. Treasury bills, notes and bonds. And this isn't being built in isolation. Major firms participating in DTCC's tokenization initiative include BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Citadel Securities, Circle, CME Group, Chainlink, Invesco, BNP Paribas, Fireblocks and many others. DTCC is also pursuing a multi-chain strategy, with tokenized assets already demonstrated across private and public blockchain infrastructure and plans to make DTC-tokenized assets available on the Stellar network in the first half of 2027. Think about what that tells us. For years, the debate was: Will traditional finance adopt crypto? I think we're beginning to ask the wrong question. What happens when traditional finance starts using the TECHNOLOGY that crypto introduced? Stocks. Bonds. Treasuries. ETFs. Collateral. Real-world assets. The infrastructure of Wall Street itself is beginning to move on-chain. The digital revolution isn't ending... It may just be getting started. For additional research, check out DTCC's Tokenization Initiative and DTCC's July Production-Trades Announcement. Listen now:

Discover why small companies are outperforming. Small-cap stocks are having a standout year, with the Russell 2000 significantly outperforming the S&P 500—but what exactly is the Russell 2000, and why are smaller companies suddenly doing so well?
