I'm your host, Brett Gilland. Today I've got Andy Galpin with me. Andy, how you doing? My man? Andy Galpin I'm doing amazing. How are you? Brett Gilliland I am doing great as well you're, uh, you out in California today? What part of California you at? Andy Galpin Yeah, I live in Southern California in, uh, long Beach. Brett Gilliland Long Beach. Very nice. Well, thank you for being with us today. And, uh, uh, as the intro says, obviously you've, you've got, you've built an amazing career and, uh, you are a world leading expert man. I feel, uh, very blessed to have you on the Circuit of Success and so, uh, appreciate your time. But if you could maybe just give us a little lay of the land, Andy, what's made you, the man you are today and, and kind of help getting you to where you've gotten. Andy Galpin Yeah, sure. I guess you want a little bitof the background is. Brett Gilliland Yeah. Andy Galpin Is that where you're going? Brett Gilliland Yeah. I always say people don't just wake up and become a doctor, work with athletes, do all the things that you're doing, man. There's a backstory there. And it's, it's my job to figure out that backstory. Andy Galpin You got it. So I was born in the Pacific Northwest, so in a, in a pretty small community, farming and logging, things like that. So I played every sport, uh, growing up. And then of course, like everyone I grew up with, I did every other job you could possibly. Do so working at grocery stores and pumping gas and hang in the summers and, um, cleaning stalls and things like that. Right. That's just, yeah. Everyone I grew up with, that's just what you did. Um, I was fortunate to actually, I went and played college football. From there, I got a degree in exercise science and was able to take that and I got a job down at Tempe, Arizona at a place called Athletes Performance. This was 2004. 2005, something like that. And, uh, at that, at the time that facility had probably over 200 professional athletes, Hall of Famers, number one draft picks, like very, very high level NFL major baseball guys. So I was there for about half a year and I realized like for sure I didn't wanna be a strength and conditioning coach was like my full-time job. And um, so I went then back to school and got my master's degree in human movement sciences. And obviously I wasn't competing in football anymore. But I then started competing in, in weightlifting or Olympic weightlifting, as you may, you know, see it in Olympics. Mm-hmm. Um, competing in combat sports and jujitsu and MMA and things like that. Um, then went, got my PhD in what's called human bioenergetics. It's like a fancy way of saying muscle physiology and metabolism and things like that. I continued to work with athletes, um, continued to train and compete in the combat sports. And then, uh, 2011 I came out here to California. Uh, started my lab, which is called the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Lab, and then eventually took over the Center for Sport Performance out here. So, um, since then I, I'm in the last, you know,

Welcome back to the state of the industry podcast. I am your host, Adam Jongsma. For the next two weeks we will be diving into the language of coaching with, Nick Winkelman. I have been looking forward to this discussion for a while now. In fact, I've been following Nicks work since he was back at Athletes Performance (now EXOS). I have always been fascinated with why a cue will work with one client or athlete, but not the next. Why some cues help translate a skill learned in training to the game environment, and why some don't even stick until the next rep, set, or training session. Well within this episode, Nick sheds some light onto why this is and how we can better understand the language of coaching to ensure our clients and athletes understand us. For those who don't know Nick, he is the head of athletic performance & science for the Irish Rugby Football Union. Prior to this, Nick was the director of education for EXOS (formerly Athletes' Performance), located in Phoenix, AZ. As a performance coach, Nick oversaw the speed and assessment component of the EXOS NFL Combine Development Program. Nick has also supported many athletes in the NFL, MLB, NBA, National Sport Organizations and Military. Nick is an internationally recognized speaker on human performance and coaching science, and has multiple publications through the UKSCA, NSCA and IDEA Health and Fitness. I've rambled for long enough, so sit back, relax, and I will see you on the other side.
High-Performance Strategist, Dr. Brandon Marcello sits down with us to discuss all things behavioral change and leadership. Dr. Marcello is a well-oiled machine within the sports performance world. He is currently a self-employed High-Performance Strategist where he engulfs himself directly into organizations to find solutions to their problems. In this episode Brandon discusses:- The major differences between high performing teams and mediocrity- Types of leaders who have the greatest influence on behavioral change- How to manage different attitudes and ego’s- How interpersonal skills differ person-to-person I hope you enjoy this episode! One of the hardest things to do in life is to let go. Often times you know it’s coming or it’s necessary, but it doesn’t make the process any easier. We have no training in this, so the natural inclination is to hold on… personally, professionally, spiritually, relationships, ideas, narratives, etc. We cling to what we think we need. Change is hard all the way around and to admit that something is no longer serving you- something that you love, have created, spent a lot of time on, are committed to, or is part of your identity, is WORK. We often get to a space where we can literally no longer bare the situation and come to a choice point. Ideally, you let go, have some time, and can positively reflect on a hard decision that was the right decision and realize how happy you are in moving on. This process will continue throughout our lives no matter what and the sooner we can be aware of the need to let go in situations, the better. It’s a constant check in point on all things with ourselves. How is XYZ really serving me? If it’s not, we need to let go. On the cast fitness and wellness rock star, entrepreneur, leader, and longtime friend, Andria Bever, and I discuss scenarios in our worlds where it was HARD, but necessary to move on. Both of us are entrepreneurs, contractors, and creators- anyone in that space knows, things move fast and are constantly changing. Business plans change, people change, budgets change, lots of variables… but that’s also what makes it fun:). We dive into the personal and professional, but focus on businesses and situations that we have built from the ground up and at some point, had to let go and move forward. Like me, Andria is someone that bleeds the brand. There is no middle ground, we are either all in or all out… balance is also a learning process:). We are both a bit type A, so we’ll commit until it’s right... or until we make it right. Right? Naa, we have both acquired an awareness on when it’s time to LET GO. Hopefully this cast can somewhat streamline your process in moving on if that is a current space you are in or choice point you are at. Let our work, work for you!! Whatever you believe, you can rest assure that there is a larger order to things. Often times our hardest decisions are the ones that point us in the right direction. Trust yourself, your gut, and the good people around you and advise you accordingly. The next thing WILL serve you. Highlights: Letting go. It’s in the stars. Larger order. Bleeding the brand. Creating, building, and establishing a brand, only to let it go. Choosing your own path, even when it’s not the popular choice. Trusting your young self and being aware of how what you should be doing (or what you love) shows up early in life… go back to that kiddo!! Breakdown, breakthrough. Evolution and revolution. The next big thing. Andria Bever: My love for sports began at a young age, which allowed me to discover my calling early in life. I found a passion for wellness and discovered the value of taking care of our bodies in order to obtain peak performance. My career began in 2001 as a Soft Tissue/Stretch Therapist at Exos (teamexos.com, formerly Athletes Performance) from 2004-2011. This setting taught me the value of Recovery for optimal on-field performance. My experience working with professional athletes gave me unique insights into helping the weekend warrior reach his/her potential. This belief became one of the guiding principles of Denver Sports Recovery. As Co-Founder of DSR my work extended far beyond the realm of Soft Tissue and Stretch Therapy. I tapped into my entrepreneurial spirit and ran all aspects of the business. I defined the brand and led the business culture by hiring like-minded professionals, created and implemented all Systems and Processes, managed vendor relationships and established strategic partnerships. @andriabever19

Delight. Smile. Feel inspired and alive and renewed. Pass it on. {My work as I see it is to} ultimately, get people to appreciate and love the act of critical thinking and exploring. And actually it’s funny to say it but return to the foundation of the scientific method, which is to have a hypothesis and try to prove it wrong, or prove it right. Not feel like a failure when it doesn’t work the way you thought it would, but feel like that’s just more information and go from there. In teaching people that…often times people watch me practice or watch me work with somebody or explain what I do and will say ‘Oh, it’s very intuitive.’ It is but it’s not. It’s just a curiosity for “Hey, what if I try this, what happens? What if I try this?" And if you boil that down it’s what we first learned in grade school when we were learning about the scientific method -- is that it’s okay to be wrong, in fact you’re probably always going to be wrong, and the beauty in it is proving it, is discovering…In the act of trying to prove it right or prove it wrong you’re going to discover more and more questions. Episode 95 – Rachel BalkovecRachel Balkovec is the first female strength and conditioning coach for any major sport within the United States. Rachel is currently with the Houston Astros, and I spoke to her on the eve of Game 6 of the World Series.Rachel took the prescribed route for education in strength and conditioning. She got her first degree, then the CSCS, and then pursued her first internship. Then she did her second. Eventually, her third...She's been through Athletes Performance (now EXOS.) She got into the graduate program at LSU, then did an internship for the St Louis Cardinals--twice. She worked weekends for years, waitressing and helping retirees go to the bathroom. She referred to Angela Duckworth's book "Grit" right at the start of this podcast. Grit COULD be the title of this episode. After so many experiences with athletic training Rachel assumed she was a shoe in to obtain additional internships while she was pursuing another degree. It was at this moment that she realized how hard it would be to make it as a woman in Major League Baseball. After countless attempts to contact teams and submit her resume, she heard nothing. It wasn’t until Rachel changer her name to Rae, that she finally got a call back.It wasn’t until another internship with the Cardinals that she secured a strength and conditioning coaching position where she now overseas eight minor league teams and roughly 200 players. Now that the Astros have won the World Series, it is all about what they can continue to do to elevate their game and continue their success. It is one thing to get to get to the top but a whole different thing to stay there, according to Rachel. One of Rachel’s major jobs is to support the minor league teams in foreign countries. Many of the players in Major League baseball come from Latin America and they are signed to teams as young as 16 years of age.

Today on the podcast get ready for an in depth interview with not just one, but three high-level fitness industry professionals from EXOS, a leader in the field of human performance employing more than 3,500 people in over 400 locations worldwide. We're exploring how new technologies are force multiplying the reach and efficacy of fitness professionals to deliver an intimate and powerful experience for both clients and athletes across the world. This interview is going to inspire you and be quite thought-provoking as we challenge the conventional wisdom in the fitness industry for one of the most powerful conversations we trust this industry must go with the use of technology to finally scale a trainer and a team's services to a level of sustainability through what team EXOS calls "force multiplied fitness training." As you know if you been listening to the show for a while or if you spent years in our space, the hour-for-hour trainer model is undergoing the largest disruption in over 50 years. In our opinion, it's right on time because there are too many of our fitness professionals leaving the space with an incredible amount of service and passion left inside them. The technology we're discussing today has the power to shift the service models upside down and radically transform how our industry will grow. You'll learn what force multiplication means to fitness, how technology can multiply a fitness professional's and club's service to clients, how to harness mobile technology and cloud-based services, and why the future of sustainable excellence in our industry lies within the data sets that we're talking about in depth today on the show Just how much time do we have until the "dream dashboard" comes to fruition, including all the biomarkers, steps, activity, machine learning and artificial-intelligence-coaching combined with the irreplaceable human connection from a professional breaks ground in our space? Medical Fitness Centers: How will technology and trainers close the gap between gyms and hospitals? Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Team EXOS reminds us that embracing technology is just the beginning to mass adoption and transformation. For a success, a tech-minded fitness professional must execute on "simple things done savagely well" and not allow themselves to get lost in all the noise and programs out there. Marty Weems reminds us that no matter what tech you use, you must do the things that get the job done each day by executing forward. The danger of technology disconnecting us on a personal level is real, but only if we choose to not be mindful and have high integrity behind the usage of fitness technology tools. Team EXOS believes that when there's an opportunity for human interaction in the club, it needs to happen as part of a great relationship with old-school tools like enthusiasm and customer service combined with some of the most powerful technology we've ever seen. To truly force multiply fitness training it takes an open mind and a clear vision about what is possible when we combine humanity and technology. With the work of team EXOS in an industry with a high value on transforming people's lives through fitness and health, there is no doubt that we are on the path to the most incredible digital transformation of our lives. Power Quotes From Team EXOS "With fitness technology, I still firmly believe in people and the connections between them. One of the elements within our human performance philosophy that we've authored is really about member segmentation. As we start looking at different generations, the first actionable step is to have a very honest appraisal of who your primary demographic is that you're trying to market to by understanding your member segmentations including active aging, youth athletes, and others to identify where they fall is the first part in deciding anything else." - Stefan Underwood on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "We all know to drive sustainable and impactful change for folks you have to address upstream behaviors. If you do that, then downstream things will start to shift in the right direction. So how can you leverage technology to better understand who a person is across a lot of different critical behaviors that are important to human performance? For fitness professionals, if you can deliver a digital assessment to really understand who someone is and what their habits are, this will empower you as a coach like never before to be able to deliver high value." - Tristan Pierce on the Fitness + Technology Podcast= "In terms of what to do, first, embrace technology and find the tool or few tools that can work for you and then execute on those. So often it comes down to simple things done savagely well and not getting lost in 500 different evaluation and programming tools. With fitness technology, pick your angle, approach, and methodology and do the things that get the job done each day by executing forward." - Marty Weems on the Fitness + Technology Podcast Resources Mentioned In This Podcast IHRSA Fitness Technology Predictions EXOS on the web EXOS on Facebook EXOS on Twitter Bryan O'Rourke - IHRSA Technology Team EXOS HQ - Phoenix, Arizona EXOS Technology Human Performance Technology EXOS Clinical Performance EXOS Team Segments JOURNEY Platform Gretchen Rubin: Social Contagion Wearable Tech Market To Be Worth $34 Billion By 2020 Bobby Cappuccio: Fitness + Technology Podcast Episode 027 Thanks To Our Outstanding Sponsors Bryan O’Rourke and his family of companies including Vedere Ventures, Integerus Advisors, and many more. This is a special Premium audio episode. to the BenGreenfieldFitness show and access this and over 300 additional hidden audios, videos, pdf's and more! Back in college, I interned at Duke University and worked with an NFL football player named I remember being completely flabbergasted at how this enormous man who was over 6'5" and weighed over 325 pounds could move like a cat, with extreme speed and precision and power while simultaneously generating enormous amounts of strength. Today, I interview two experts who fill me in on some of the secrets that collegiate athletes are using to prepare for the NFL combine, the same underground tactics used by athletes in the NFL who are complete physical specimens. I wanted to pick these experts' brains about to learn how these NFL athletes train, how they recover, how they sleep and more…and in this episode you're going to get a sneak peek. My guests are two specialists that train and fuel these elite football athletes: Michelle Riccardi and Denis Logan. Michelle Riccardi, MS, RD, CSSD, Sports Performance Dietitian has 18 years of experience providing sports nutrition services to professional and elite athletes in the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, PGA, NFLPA, and NCAA as well as International and Olympic athletes, tactical athletes and fire fighters. A 2007 graduate of the Athletes’ Performance Intern Program, Denis serves as a performance specialists in the education department. Prior to joining Athletes’ Performance, he was a strength coach at Aviator Sports Performance in New York. Denis most recently completed his M.S. in Fitness and Health Management from the US Sports Academy. Both Michelle and Denis just returned from the NFL Combine, a week-long showcase occurring every February at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, where college football players perform a big battery of physical and mental tests in front of National Football League coaches, general managers, and scouts. Implications of an athlete's performance during the combine can affect their draft status and salary, and ultimately their career, and an athlete's "draft stock" is increased based on superior measurable qualities such as size, speed, and strength. Michelle and Denis are real experts when it comes to maximizing these qualities, and during this episode, you'll discover: -What the NFL Combine is... -What kind of blood testing athletes have done in the NFL Combine... -How personalized and individualized meals are created for each athlete... -What kind of supplements the athletes take... -A typical a ‘day in the life of an athlete’... -Why dry needling and acupuncture is used... -The concept of and how they are used in the athletes... -How an athlete's sleep is enhanced at the Combine... -And much more! DraftCountdown.com’s Scott Wright and Shane P. Hallam preview the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine. Guest was trainer extraordinaire Travelle Gaines from Athletes Performance.
The fitness industry is at a critical moment in its young life. More and more gyms are opening every day and the competition is becoming greater and greater. Simply having the latest equipment will no longer suffice. Relationships between member client and the staff at the gym must be strong if the business is to be successful. Unfortunately, many personal trainers and staff are not sure how to forge and strengthen these relationships. Dr. Roy Sugarman has written "Engaging and Retaining Clients in Healthy Behavior Change" for this very purpose. Today, we will discuss the principles behind a client centered training approach, as opposed to a trainer-centric approach where the trainer is the "expert" and client is just meat. We will also talk about the various strategies an actual techniques they can apply immediately. Our guest today is Dr. Roy Sugarman, Director of Applied Neuroscience at Athletes' Performance. Dr. Sugarman is a clinical neuropsychologist, a clinical psychologist, and an internationally-recognized expert in optimizing brain performance. With decades of experience working with corporate and field athletes, as well as victims of brain injury, Dr. Sugarman brings an objective approach to the management of mindset. He also advises on how to use these results to improve performance.
