Brad Reid returns to East Coast DNA's apartment studio for a catch up chat with Darcy Walsh and treats everyone to a little performance along the way. Nova Scotia fiddler Brad Reid fuses traditional Cape Breton fiddle with modern acoustic pop and jazz on his new album The Bridge, available everywhere as of May 19, 2023. "The Bridge” is 10 brand new tracks of original tunes, inspired by connecting the old Cape Breton traditions with modern acoustic pop and jazz, from the great Scottish and Cape Breton composers, to contemporary pop and jazz artists like Taylor Swift and Herbie Hancock. Reid describes his album as “like jam session where everyone comes from a different style of music, but then they just let go, and in that moment, that's when the music transcends genres”. Next Week: The Women of Irish & Celtic Music I titled this episode “Slow Travel”. Today, I got an email from VisitScotland.com. That's a website promoting Scottish tourism. Since I'm leading a Celtic Invasion Vacation to Loch Lomond in Scotland, I've been subscribed and seeing what they have to offer. Today, they shared an article and video about Slow Travel. That's something that I greatly appreciate and cherish with my own vacations. It's not about seeing everything. It's getting to know an area. Check out the link in the shownotes. And I highly recommend their newsletter. They seem to be leading the pack when it comes to promoting ecotourism and sustainable travel. Stuff I've slowly thought about. But they're really doing it in Scotland. So kudos! Let's get on with the show. VOTE IN THE CELTIC TOP 20 FOR 2022 This is our way of finding the best songs and artists each year. You can vote for as many songs and tunes that inspire you in each episode. Your vote helps me create next year's Best Celtic music of 2022 episode.  Vote Now! It also helps me create the… IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC: BEST OF 2022 PLAYLIST Your votes are tabulated two weeks after the episode is released. The most - popular songs are added to TWO playlists. One one Spotify. One on Amazon Music. I sometimes make errors. So the newest additions to the Playlist are Tuatha de Danann, Doolin', We Banjo 3, Screeched and Marc Gunn Listen on Spotify and Amazon Music. BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN My new CD is now available. It's called Selcouth. It's an album of almost all original music. There's one traditional tune set and “Loch Lomond,” a traditional Scottish song. The rest of it is a bunch of original songs with Celtic - inspired music. There's a few  comedy tracks like “Mingulay Cat Song”, “Why Do You Torture Me”, “Genetic Counseling Song”, and “Kilty Pleasure”. There's a new hobbit song inspired by Lord of the Rings and a song I think Wolf Loescher sang on this podcast a year ago. There are four songs inspired by the pop culture TV show, Firefly, but fused with Celtic sounds. The lyrics are definitely relevant to fans of the show, but the stories are about real people finding change. One of my favorite parts about the album is collaboration with other musicians like Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out at least four times a month. You can see some of this on videos on our website, which was included in the submission. Thanks so much for considering playing our music on your podcast. Let me know if you have any questions." Buddy McPeak emailed: "Just found the podcast on pandora.  Great music!  I'll be listening from now on. Thanks" Karen H emailed: "Hi Marc, I am a recent Patron. :) I joined so I can expand my knowledge of and listening experiences with other Celtic Musicians. I have very little of each at the moment. So, my favorites that I've listened to for years are: Altan, Lunasa, The Gothard Sisters, The Chieftains, and though she is probably a different category, my all time favorite music artist no matter the genre is Enya. I have so much to explore in the Celtic music genre! I appreciate your podcasts."

But starting November 28, the all new show launches with a new Celtic Christmas playlist. You can help spread Celtic Christmas Cheer. I listen to it over and over, then research the band, find their web site and buy everything. You played a fabulous piece - Dragonfly by the Gothard Sisters. I went to their web site and bought everything. You played a fabulous piece - Argyle Lassies by Capercaille. I bought all their CD's.  Bought everything. You played a fabulous piece - St Patricks March by the Bookends. Bought everything. You played a fabulous piece - Millers Maggot by the Flying Toads. Bought everything. Same for Altan, Silotar, Barrule, Bothy Band... I can't figure out your voting system, Best this year - cast a vote for the Gothard Sisters Dragonfly. On a completely different note, I heard this band at a renaissance fair playing German medieval instruments with modern arrangements.  Blew me away.  The band is Wolgemut.  Here is a spotify playlist.  Maybe for a change of pace in your podcast... You are doing great work Marc - Keep it up."

I'm back to doing my early morning walks (have to start walking about sunrise for the cooler weather).  The photo was taken looking north to Safford peak with a hot air balloon moving to the right to pass Safford to the east side.  Back in my peak climbing days I climbed Safford a number of times.  It's a great trip with wonderful views from the top. I learned how to connect 3 of your podcasts, so I could listen to your podcasts for the whole time.  Thanks for the work you do to distribute this music." Peter Bengtson sent another photo from October: "Mark,  I've  recently been walking the bicycle trail along the Rillito River.  This was the most dramatic piece of art along the trail.  It shows bats riding bicycles.  The upper bat and bicycle is upside down since the bats hang upside down under the bridges over the river. The second and third messages are information signs about the Mexican Free Tail bats living under bridges.  I couldn't figure out how to get all 3 photo into the same message."

It is because of you that I release this show almost every week. But I want to let you know about a big change this coming to the Song Hengers on Patreon. I started Song Henge in 2006. It was a way to support the podcast when amazing services like Patreon were not available. I sent Song Hengers an album per month of free MP3s from some of the artists on the show. I released 168 of those albums over the past 15 years thanks to the generosity of the musicians on this show. When I started the Patreon page, I continued that feature for everyone who pledged $5 or more per episode. There are over 60 albums currently available for Patrons. However, the world seems to be moving away from MP3s. So I decided to discontinue that service at the end of this year. It's time for a change. I still want something special for Song Hengers. That has finally come. Starting in August, Song Hengers will get a talk-free episode, much like the Sleepytime episode that was released in May. I'll introduce the show, you can listen to the music straight through for about an hour, then I'll remind listeners to look up the artists. Each episode will also include complete shownotes and chapters so you can easily skip around to the artists you enjoy, just like regular episodes. Because I DO want you to keep visiting these artists. But it'll be much more music focused. You can become a generous Patron of the Podcast on Patreon at SongHenge.com. I started out listening to folk & bluegrass music.  Sometime in the 90s I sort of switched to classical music and opera. The Covid restrictions have pushed me into taking long walks every day.  I live in Tucson AZ, so these days I have to start walking at sunrise (5:30) these days.  I usually walk for about 2 hours.  Yesterday I listened to your Celtic Women #503 on the first half of the walk.  The second half to Aria Code (opera).  On the drive home I listened to Symphony Hall on SeriusXM.  I enjoyed all three. I really don't like "recurring donations"  If you are a tax deductible organization with a Tax identification number, I can make a donation from my charitable account.  If you are not a tax deductible organization, I can send you a check. Truth be told, after I listen, I take hte podcast into adobe Audition and carve it up so I can listen to the instrumentals without talk, since I write while listening and words from the music get in the way. Please give us more of your all instrumental sets! My only advice - change up your patter. I have been listening since hte mid 300's and your opening patter has never changed. Give it a rest.  I know your opening spiel by heart. Say something new.  Something new for each opening. "

I told my graphic designer, Miranda Nelson, that the St Patrick’s Day show would be the 500th episode of the podcast. She thought about it and came back and asked, “would you mind if I collected some audio feedback from some of the artists on the show.” I said,” sure! That sounds great!” I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much of a response. But I remembered that she suggested this when I started compiling this 500th episode. She forwarded me some feedback via email. I looked through them and didn’t see any audio. “Oh well,” I thought. “Less than I expected, but that’s fine.” Then I noticed one band mentioned something about including audio in their email. But I never got that. So I emailed and asked Miranda where that audio was. Her response, “it’s in the folder you set up on Google Drive.” Oh yeah! I did do that, didn’t I? I opened up the folder and was floored to find over 60 recordings by Celtic bands wishing me a  happy 500th episode. Wow! Ye know a couple pieces are easy to pop into an episode. But I didn’t think about how to include ALL OF THESE pieces? So what should I do for this show? Instead of me introducing bands and songs, I’m gonna let the artists do it themselves. I will play their congratulations as a way of introducing their music. Course that means if you want to find out the name of the song or tune, you will need to visit the shownotes at CelticMusicPodcast.com or just check your podcatcher. Because each track has a time stamp so you can easily look it up. That said, I’ll have a few moments to break up the music and say hi. But for the most part this is just music and congratulations. I want to thank Miranda Nelson Designs for all of her hard work in making this happen. Miranda has a whole bunch of Celtic shirt designs you should check out at mirandanelsondesigns.com. And I want to thank everyone who has supported this podcast over the past 16 years. And without further adieu, let’s meet the bands. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Thanks to Susan of Thunder on the Plains and the support you’ve given her, I will be buying the latest album from each artist on that ‘Women of Celtic Music’ episode. I just returned from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where they have wonderful Celtic culture.  Right now, as I listen, I’m enjoying my first wee dram of Canadian whisky (spelled without an ‘e,’ but not called Scotch) from Glenora Distillery, aged in ice wine barrels.  It’s excellent. (Picture attached.) Also, if Natalie the ethno-musicologist wouldn’t mind sharing links to her work, I’d love to read it, being an amateur folklorist and published musicologist. With her husband, Thampy, Mariamma founded the New India Church of God, nearly 40 years ago. They currently have well over 1,500 churches in 22 states of India. They focus on equipping indigenous leaders from the different states of India, training them (in English) in their Training Centre in Goa, them sending them on to one of their 15 other training schools, where they continue to learn in their own language. Every week seven mobile teams (equipped with a jeep/mini-bus, generator, projector, the 'Jesus' film and PA equipment), bring the gospel to a new unreached village - planting a new church every day or two among the 400,000 unreached villages of India! All four of their children and their partners are also involved in running orphanages and schools, feeding street children and men, and planting churches in the mega-cities of Calcutta and Mumbai (with 60 million people in each). New India Church of God website: http://www.nicog.org ---------------- Includes NEWS from 'Bread NEWS International' and music from: Brad Reid, (Nova Scotia, Canada) - 'Andy Broon's', (The Conundrum); Needfire, (Texas, USA)-'Rise Above', (Cat in a Cannon); Blackthorn, (Northern Ireland, UK)-'David's Song', (The Good Ship Blackthorn) Produced by Precious Oil Productions Ltd, for Kingdom Come Trust.
