Everyone has a Batman opinion. Inside your imagination is a definitive Batman: a Batman who should behave this way, and a Batman who should not behave that way. Your tight grip on your Batman is why Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's carefully considered Absolute Batman works so damn well. They fully understand and appreciate how the character has congealed over the last eight decades into a rock-solid idea. For the last eight months, alongside collaborators like Gabriel H. Walta, Marcos Martín, Frank Martin, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles, Snyder and Dragotta have chipped away at the quintessential Dark Knight. They've altered elements of his origin, removed his social position, and rearranged his relationship with his rogues. Their Absolute Batman is a Bruce Wayne in motion, moving toward the impenetrable idea in your head, but struggling to match it. Here is a character growing into something, evolving into a recognizable hero for 2025. After confronting Mr. Freeze in issues seven and eight and facing the final days of Matches Malone, Bruce Wayne must reassess his war on Gotham City crime. What lessons did he learn from that awful day at The Zoo? Do his nights as Batman honor his father's sacrifice? As he fights to find himself, a grotesque demonic doppelganger appears - Bane, the nineties sensation who once broke a bat from another universe. FOC for Absolute Batman #9 is today (5/19/25)! Tell your retailers to order a copy for ya. With this comic, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta have cooked an undeniable banquet. As the best alternate reality stories should, they've weaponized your knowledge of these characters against you, subverting in radically compelling ways, while delivering what should never be manipulated. Today's podcast features two conversations. Up first, Scott Snyder joins us for a lengthy look back at the last eight months of Absolute Batman. We discuss Bruce Wayne's continuing development into the Dark Knight, his complex relationship with Joe Chill, his father's killer, and why Bane had to arrive sooner rather than later. Secondly, Nick Dragotta pops in for a conversation about his ultra chonky Bane design, and how what we've seen so far is only a hint of his true monstrosity. Absolute Batman #9 will finally arrive in stores, courtesy of DC Comics, on June 11th. Follow Scott Snyder on Bluesky and Instagram, and subscribe to his Substack. Follow Nick Dragotta on Bluesky and Instagram. This Week's Sponsor We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! But suddenly that revelation means very little as Robin has disappeared! Clark Kent and a nearly inconsolable Bruce Wayne are waiting by the phone in Inspector Henderson's office hoping for any word of Rob–uh–we mean Dick Gray–uh–we mean Rob–uh…well, hopefully they'll find whoever he is soon! Holy Nu-metal, Batman! It's the year 2039, Bruce Wayne is a grouchy old man, corporations rule the world, and Batman is a moody teen. Has there ever been a cooler superhero show? This we're week going long on one of our favorite animated series, BATMAN BEYOND, and the standalone film that reunited Mark Hamill's Joker with Bruce Timm, Kevin Conroy, and the whole BTAS gang for a truly horrific vision of the Bat-Family's future. Send us a textHave you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? Tim Burton's 1989 Batman transformed not just how we see the Dark Knight, but how Hollywood approaches superhero films entirely. When Michael Keaton was announced as Batman, fans were outraged. A petition with 50,000 signatures protested the decision. Even Batman creator Bob Kane expressed doubt. Fast forward to today, and many consider Keaton the definitive live-action Batman, perfectly balancing Bruce Wayne's sophistication with Batman's brooding intensity.Jack Nicholson's Joker performance remains legendary. After negotiating a percentage of box office and merchandise sales (earning him between $50-90 million), Nicholson delivered a villain for the ages - theatrical, unpredictable, and genuinely menacing. His iconic line about dancing with the devil still sends chills down spines decades later. What makes this film special is how it broke from convention. Rather than beginning with Batman's origin story, Burton introduces him as an established vigilante, gradually revealing his past through carefully placed flashbacks. The film's gothic visual style, Danny Elfman's unforgettable score, and practical effects created a Gotham City that feels tangible and timeless.Batman grossed $411 million worldwide, holding the record for highest-grossing superhero film until 2002's Spider-Man. More importantly, it proved comic book adaptations could be serious artistic and commercial ventures, paving the way for everything from Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy to today's superhero renaissance. What's your favorite Batman film? Does Keaton still hold the crown as the best Batman, or has another actor claimed the cowl? Share your thoughts and join the conversation!Support the show

For many people, asserting themselves at work is a real challenge. There's a lot of possible reasons for that, including stress, anxiety, new responsibilities, deadlines, personal issues or a lack of self-confidence for example. But there is an active congitive strategy, actually a pretty simple one, based on the psychological concept of "self-distancing," that could help you overcome these obstacles and become more confident in the workplace: the Batman effect. Batman is the powerful, vengeful, and ultra-confident alter ego of Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who was traumatised by the murder of his parents when he was a child. When he dons the Batsuit though, the adult consumed by sadness becomes the hero of Gotham City. In the same way, the Batman effect allows people to access their heroic selves. Why Batman ? Does it work for adults too ? How can I use the Batman effect then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! This whole episode came about when Matt was looking for something else entirely, and he stumbled across an issue of Batman: Gotham Adventures, the animated series tie-in, written by Ed Brubaker. As he didn't remember that at all, he decided he had to read it, and since he has minimal time to read for pleasure, the best solution was to work it into an episode. Thus we have three stories about people telling stories about Batman and Bruce Wayne. Is it a stretch for a theme? Yes. Are the comics all very good? Also yes. Dive deep into the shadows of Gotham as Geek History Lesson embarks on a gripping journey through Batman's Dark Age—spanning from 1985 to 2000. This era redefined the Caped Crusader, courtesy of visionary creators like Frank Miller, whose "The Dark Knight Returns" brought a gritty realism to Bruce Wayne's world. Alongside Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke," which delved into the twisted psyche of the Joker, and Grant Morrison's innovative narratives in "Arkham Asylum," these stories sculpted a darker, more complex Batman. This period ushered in a renaissance of the Dark Knight, transforming him into a symbol of vigilante justice steeped in moral ambiguity, setting the stage for Batman's evolution for years to come. Catching Up:• Peter shares a laid-back spring break filled with Avowed, a vasectomy, and home recovery. He praises the game's gray morality and engaging writing.• Eden talks about buying a Boox Palma (a minimalist e-reader) to curb phone addiction, reading five books in a week, and recommends the Practice Perfect romance series by Carson Tate.Tech Dalliances:• Both hosts talk about recent tech indulgences.• Eden raves about the Boox Palma as a life-improving gadget for focused reading.• Peter details his journey with the Ayn Odin 2 Portal, a handheld Android gaming device. His dream of retro emulation quickly becomes a nightmare of BIOS files and sideloading drama.• The takeaway? Sometimes it's better to just play your modern Steam backlog.Comics Corner:• Eden shares thoughts on DC's new Absolute line and its reimaginings of classic characters:• Absolute Wonder Woman is a standout.• Absolute Batman explores a working-class Bruce Wayne.• Absolute Martian Manhunter earns high praise for reinventing a character Eden never cared about.• A rant about Hush 2 and a Harley Quinn scratch-and-sniff fart fetish comic provides comic book industry absurdity.Main Topic -- Andor Episodes 1-3:Peter's First Watch:• Came in skeptical due to Star Wars burnout.• Found episode one a bit slow, episode two better, and episode three "hooked" him.• Admits it's the most he's enjoyed Star Wars since Return of the Jedi--possibly ever.Themes and Analysis:• Andor is a serious, adult take on Star Wars, unafraid to depict the empire as a metaphor for real-world fascism and police brutality.• The show avoids nostalgic gimmicks and "wink-wink" references in favor of grounded storytelling and rich characterization.Setting Praise:• Ferix, Cassian's home, is a fully realized working-class world with its own culture, social code, and resistance instincts.• The show's commitment to practical sets over digital environments makes it visually compelling.Character Deep Dives:• Cassian Andor's backstory reveals a lifetime of loss and injustice, priming him for future rebellion.• Marva's complex relationship with Cassian is explored through strong performances and layered writing.• Syril Karn is identified as a perfect example of authoritarian overreach--ambitious, small-minded, and terrifyingly familiar.Visual & Directorial Highlights:• Directed by Toby Haynes, the series is praised for its cinematography, lighting, and gripping action sequences.• The bell ringer, glove wall, and "droid that is stairs" moments are noted as the kind of world-building Star Wars does best.Looking Ahead:• Eden hints that the upcoming arcs in Andor get even better.• Season 2 will follow a similar structure: four arcs of three episodes, each set a year apart leading up to Rogue One.Closing Thoughts:• Peter is intrigued and excited to continue.• The hosts tease more Andor discussions ahead and wrap up with their usual mix of sarcasm, cultural critique, and sincere enthusiasm.
