Among the many acquisitions with which Marc Levine became involved during his 25 years at Hewlett-Packard Co., it may surprise few of his former colleagues that he counts HP's purchase of Compaq Computer as one of the tech giant's most unusual marriages. However, Levine doesn't single out HP's purchase of Compaq due to the lively behind-the-scenes drama that accompanied it after Walter Hewlett, son of one of the HP founders, loudly voiced his opposition to the deal and initiated a proxy fight or the two books that the subsequent battle helped to fatten. Instead, Levine tells us that from his perspective, the unusual aspect of the Compaq acquisition had more to do with the integration of certain pieces of the business. “On my particular team, I was the only person from HP, which was unlike in any of the other HP integrations I had previously been involved with, where there had always been more HP people,” explains Levine, who recalls spending many a night in Houston, Texas, hotel rooms beside Compaq's headquarters. Looking back, Levine suspects that the lack of HP representation on his team had to do with his group's focus on the integration of Compaq's sales team and field organization. Having in the past worked closely with the HP sales team (including a stint as a sales leader in HP's Southeast Asia operations), Levine was perhaps better prepared than many of his HP peers to join the integration effort. Says Levine: “I think that past experience brought me a little more credibility when I walked into the room, and I could understand better some of the things that the Compaq people were dealing with.” Still, while HP was widely known as an engineering organization rich with technical talent, Compaq was known for having a dynamic sales organization—a standout attribute that may have led the acquiring company to give Compaq greater influence than in other deals when it came to integrating sales talent. Adds Levine: “It was the biggest and probably the first acquisition that I became involved with at HP. There was a lot of controversy at the time as to whether it was the right move for HP, but the integration was really about making certain that we could bring together the best of both companies.” –Jack Sweeney
This week on Inside Great Minds with Adam Outland, Adam talks with David Gow of Gow Media about his interesting work history, current holdings, and future investments. David shares his most valuable advice, including advice he'd give his younger self that any young aspiring business person should hear. With a background working in the early dot-com bubble, David gained many skill sets and talents that prepared him for success as an entrepreneur later in life. At 40, David had the rare opportunity to buy a radio license. From there, David expanded the business with the help of talented radio personalities who knew the inner workings of a media business better than he did. Ultimately, David further expanded beyond radio into digital print media with CultureMap, InnovationMap, and AutomotiveMap! Adam goes in-depth with David on how he has shifted gears into building a SPAC (SportsMap Tech Acquisition Corp) which can't go public just yet and raise money to acquire a company (ideally) within the sports and tech space. In this episode, Adam and David explore: David's journey from consultant to CFO, COO, to founder. Principles used to develop his skills and grow his business Critical thinking in his decision making Challenges he overcame through acquisitions Defining SPAC and why he entered that space Here are a few breakthrough quotes you'll hear in this episode with David Gow: “The other thing that I think has really been important to me over the course of my career, is listening to others. I worry listening is almost a lost art in today's world, and particularly [because of] mobile devices and distractions. … And people want to just jump to conclusions. But I think it's really important to hear out and listen to all the underlying assumptions that lead to those conclusions.” “I really do love the optionality of our business and optionality in life. We are in a place where we can do lots of different things.” “I really do have a passion and an excitement for learning – learning new abilities, new skills, new information … I would encourage everyone to continually grow in knowledge and skills. So much of learning is listening to people and listening intently.” “Every 20-something person wants to do something significant in life, wants to do something important, wants to have real weight about their work and where they lay it, they want to be sure they become something, and to find a great outcome. And it's really hard in your 20s, to know what that's going to be. There's a sense of restlessness about that because you don't know where you're going to go and how you're going to get there … I say take a deep breath and those in their 20s should invest in learning and growing functions and skillsets and capabilities. Work hard and don't feel so restless. It will work out.”

Karen Walker is an executive coach, consultant, speaker and author focused on helping senior leaders create internal strategies that support their organizations’ external growth. Decades ago, Karen helped lead the (then) fastest growing - and fastest to $1 billion in revenue - company in American history: Compaq Computer. After working at Compaq for fourteen years, with annual revenues growing to $15 billion, she left to begin her consultancy. Karen now serves as an executive advisor, coach and consultant to CEOs and senior organization leaders looking to grow their companies — with outcomes including IPOs, acquisitions, market share increases, and dramatic leadership development. Karen’s work has enabled sustained growth in a multitude of companies, including startups, Inc. 500 and Fortune 500 firms. Karen’s new book, No Dumbing Down: A No-Nonsense Guide for CEOs on Organization Growth teaches a company’s senior-most leaders how to do a job only they can do: aligning the organization’s internal and external strategies for profitable, sustainable growth using 5 key strategies. Why do leaders need this guidance? The problem is misunderstanding what it takes to grow. When most companies try to grow, they invariably over focus on sales and revenue-growth — at the expense of making sure they’ve aligned the infrastructure needed to support that growth. The result? Sales outpace the company’s ability to fulfill its promises. Suddenly, product quality drops; employees get overwhelmed by rework; customers grow dissatisfied as commitments are missed; firefighting becomes the norm; top people run for the exits; and the company’s reputation tanks. In today’s conversation, Karen shares the story of Compaq, and outlines the 5 strategies covered in her book, designed to help senior leaders avoid the common pitfalls of organizational growth. As an experienced hyper-growth leader herself, she offers finer distinctions that every leader and entrepreneur can learn from in order to go from startup to grownup in an efficient and sustainable manner. Key Takeaways In a hyper-growth company you really see the interdependence within the team – it’s about optimizing the whole vs maximizing any one function. A team can only perform at the level of the lowest performing member. ‘A’ players can carry a team for a while but eventually they will leave. There’s a responsibility of senior leadership to ensure they are aligned internally and able to scale. You have to set aside time in your calendar where you clear your mind and just think. Grow or die - there is no steady state in the world. If you’re in steady state, you’re actually in decline. It’s not just what is done, it’s how it’s done, because that’s what is sustainable over the long term. Not all problems have to be solved, and not all problems have to be solved by you. This opened the door to an entire industry of PCs that could run the same software. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," how frustrated renter Melanie Colón created an easier way to communicate with noisy neighbors, called Apt App.

An Interview With Compaq Co-Founder and CEO Rod CanionThis Sunday, AMC is premiering a new original series called Halt And Catch Fire. Set in the early 1980s, it tells the story of a band of cowboy entrepreneurs and engineers who join the PC Wars by cloning an IBM machine and taking on Big Blue for control of the nascent personal computer industry.AMC’s show is fictional, but it turns out, there is a true life story that is similar to this course of events, and it led to the creation of one of the greatest technology companies of all time, Compaq Computers.Rod Canion was one of the co-founders of Compaq back in the early 80s, and he was there for the real world PC wars. He’s written a book about the time period, Open: How Compaq Ended IBM’s PC Domination and Helped Invent Modern Computing. In the interview below, I spoke to Rod about the book, the process of taking on Big Blue and cloning the IBM-PC, and how a series of incredible calculated gambles paid off to eventually build one of history’s most successful technology companies. The ongoing explosion of data and information throughout the enterprise is undeniable. Sensitive data, whether structured or unstructured, finds itself replicated and dispersed. This creates a challenge for information security professionals to prevent the flow of this information to unauthorized or inappropriate destinations. The security community has made great progress in protecting this data and information while it is at rest or in use. But ... is there more that can be done?Companies are now asking, "Who moved my data and where did it go? Was it an appropriate flow from one internal department to another? Was the flow intended for a trusted business partner? Or ... was my data heading for an unknown destination, a competitor or a pool of cybercriminals?"End point controls, access controls, database monitoring and encryption are all important components of a solid layered security approach. However tools that provide visibility and control over "data in motion" deliver critical capabilities that none of these other components can adequately address. When prioritizing various components or layers of an information security implementation, it has been argued that a solid "data in motion" component can provide 80% of the bang for 20% of the buck (and effort!)This presentation focuses on methods and techniques in wire speed detection and control of data in motion. The presentation will include:approaches to detecting simple patterns emphasizing low false positivesadvances in wire speed pattern matching enabling protection of specific fields or combination of fields in a databasepolicy designs that combine network application controls with content identification and controlwire speed blocking that does not require a proxy About the speaker: Mr. Leonard is responsible for bringing to market an advanced Deep Packet Inspection device focused on Information Leak Prevention and other leading edge security applications for Global Velocity. He has spent over 25 years in Communications Technology, with experience ranging from Military systems to global fortune 100 networks to modern day internet solutions.
