In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela open with headlines about Travis Kelce's rumored Pfizer payday and Trump's unusual comments on autism in Cuba. The discussion quickly shifts to Kamala Harris' media tour, her new book 107 Days, and the contradictions in her remarks about Pete Buttigieg. The conversation broadens into her attacks on Trump, her rambling appearance on The View, and commentary on Antifa protests in Oregon, the ineffectiveness of activist theatrics, and the absurdity of civil unrest. Midway through, the hosts pivot into pop culture, debating the highs and lows of '80s and '90s cinema, John Hughes' teen classics, Eddie Murphy's career arc, and the lasting impact of Terminator 2, Mortal Kombat, and early video game movies. Halloween traditions come next, with a spirited push for better neighborhood participation, nostalgic ads, and the idea of reviving block parties. Later, the show examines Texas A&M's hazing scandal, shares stories of reckless youth, and dives into wild hotel tales that segue into conspiracy theories about Michael Jackson, Prince, and the music industry. The discussion rounds out with gangster rap history, Suge Knight's notorious reputation, and a “Half-Assed Top Ten” of banned TV shows. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Show Notes Episode 508: “John's Detachable Penis” This week Host Dave Bledsoe woke up screaming after a bender to find a red mess and half a weiner on his lap, only to discover he passed out while eating a hot dog. (What kind of monster puts ketchup on a hot dog?) On the show this week we discuss a similar situation that ended much worse, we talk about John Bobbitt's detached penis and why Americans thought it was funny! Along the way we discover all the ways Dave has been a disappointment to the women in his life. (Starting with his Mom) Then we dive right in clarifying the difference between regular old castration and emasculation. (Never say we don't tackle the hard topics!) Then we met John and Lorena, a couple of kids, who met, fell in love and discovered that was a really BAD idea.  After delicately weaving around some fairly gruesome subjects we arrive at why Americans thought a dude's dong landing in a 7-11 parking lot was so funny. (We are terrible people) Then we wrap up with something that might be considered a metaphor for modern times. Our Sponsor this week is Total Package Protection, never have a penis without it. We open with Eddie Murphy (again) talking about why dick threats aren't funny and close with Dr Bootyu Quiver who is looking for something. This week on Totally 80s and 90s Recall, Dave, Rob, and Kurt are joined by special guests Brad and Sean to dive into the wild world of 1980s comedy movies with a March Madness–style 16-team bracket. From slapstick to satire, the guys break down some of the funniest and most quotable films of the decade, pitting classics head-to-head until only two comedies reigns supreme. Each matchup sparks laughs, heated debate, and plenty of nostalgia as the crew tries to decide which flick really captured the comedic spirit of the 80s. The bracket is stacked with heavy-hitters like National Lampoon's Vacation, Stripes, and Coming to America, each bringing its own brand of outrageous humor and iconic performances. But the competition doesn't stop there—parody powerhouses like Spaceballs square off against teen comedy staples such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The panel wrestles with tough questions: does a cult classic deserve to topple a box office giant? Should quotability matter more than critical acclaim? And just how much does nostalgia play into picking a true champion? With Brad and Sean stirring the pot and adding their own favorites into the mix, the bracket becomes a hilarious walk down memory lane. Whether it's Chevy Chase bumbling his way through family road trips, Eddie Murphy redefining comedy stardom, or Matthew Broderick convincing us to skip school in style, this episode is packed with laughter, debate, and plenty of “you had to be there” 80s moments. It's the ultimate comedy showdown, and only two films can survive the bracket madness! In this bonus episode of Selective Ignorance, Mandii B is joined by A-King and Jayson Rodriguez for a dynamic deep dive into the world of Black cult classics—films that continue to shape culture, conversation, and identity across generations. The episode kicks off with an introduction to the concept of Black cult classics [00:00], before unpacking what truly defines a “classic” in this space [02:52].Together, they examine the cultural impact and the power of representation in film [05:53], while also spotlighting the role of actors and directors in pushing stories forward [09:04]. The discussion explores how genres within Black cinema have evolved [11:55], touching on the controversial legacy of Blaxploitation [14:44] and Eddie Murphy’s groundbreaking influence in the 1980s [17:44]. The conversation then shifts to the 1990s, celebrated as a golden era for Black films [21:05], followed by a lively debate on quality versus cult status [23:49]. After reflecting on how these dynamics continue to shape the future of Black cinema [27:04], the trio engages in a spirited comparison of “hood films” and “love films” [40:02], before branching into discussions on other genres like comedy, biopics, and more [42:48]. Romance and dramedy emerge as critical forces in shaping narratives around Black love and identity [46:32], while Tyler Perry’s controversial reign in Black film becomes a focal point [50:13]. This naturally leads into a comparison of Spike Lee and Tyler Perry’s distinct legacies [54:40], and a spotlight on the new generation of filmmakers such as Ryan Coogler and Jordan Peele [01:01:14]. The group also unpacks the complex role of slave movies in Black cinema [01:07:22], questioning their place in shaping narratives of identity and history. Finally, they close the episode on a playful note with a game of “How Many Black Movies Have You Seen?” [01:09:47], blending nostalgia, critique, and cultural appreciation. This episode highlights the enduring impact of Black films and the ongoing journey of representation, storytelling, and ownership in Hollywood. “No Holes Barred: A Dual Manifesto Of Sexual Exploration And Power” w/ Tempest X!Sale Link Follow the host on Social MediaMandii B Instagram/X @fullcourtpumps Follow the show on Social MediaInstagram @selectiveignorancepodTiktok @selective.ignoranceX/Twitter @selectiveig_podSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Produced and directed by Tim Story, The Pickup is the heist action-comedy film starring Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Eva Longoria, and Keke Palmer. It is one of the latest original movies to land on Amazon Prime. A routine cash pickup takes a wild turn when two mismatched armoured truck drivers, Russell (Murphy) and Travis (Davidson), are ambushed by ruthless criminals led by a savvy mastermind, Zoe (Palmer), with plans that go way beyond the cash cargo. As chaos unfolds around them, the unlikely duo must navigate high-risk danger, clashing personalities, and one very bad day that keeps getting worse. We break down all things from the "buddy action comedy" genre, the high and lows to the twists and turns, to the action that impressed at least one of us.

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 8, 2025.  The sequel "Freakier Friday" takes a lot from the 2003 "Freaky Friday" movie, but it's still fun to see Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis trading bodies with a couple of teenagers.  It's also got a good message about seeing things from others' perspectives. Other options include a couple of scary movies... one that could be a good test to see if your kids can *handle* scary movies called "Sketch" from Angel Studios. And NOT for kids, a film called "Weapons"... it's still a freak-you-out and make you nervous and uncomfortable for two hours kind of scary movie.  Finally, on streaming on Amazon Prime Video, you could check out Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer, and Eva Longoria in "The Pickup".  You gotta like Pete Davidson, though, to enjoy this at all...and that may be too much to ask for some. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy, with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.  Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen.  Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSLNewsRadio App. Join the conversation on Facebook @FanEffectShow, or Instagram @FanEffectShow.
