In this episode, we focus on the often-overlooked geographies of Eurasian connectivity with Dr. Wojciech Kębłowski, whose research brings attention to the Polish border towns of Małaszewicze and Narevka, key yet rarely discussed nodes in global infrastructure networks. As Eurasia undergoes a dramatic reconfiguration—with initiatives like China's Belt and Road Initiative, the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor, and numerous regional projects vying for influence—we discuss what happens at the edges. How are logistics nodes developed? Who lives in these nodes of connection, and how do they navigate the shifting tides of global ambition? Our conversation spans local politics, logistics, labor, railway connectivity, and geopolitics, offering a multidimensional view of border hubs where the global meets the local. These sites are not only shaped by supply chain logics but also by mounting geopolitical rivalries, as powers compete for infrastructural influence across continents. Dr. Kębłowski paints a vivid picture of Małaszewicze, once a booming railway town employing over 10,000 people, now economically depressed but still strategically vital. While geopolitical tensions—like the war in Ukraine—have disrupted trade flows, they haven't derailed Małaszewicze's importance. The town's traffic has rebounded, a testament to its logistical centrality. Dr. Kębłowski discussed the hopes of renewal spurred by the BRI and how local leaders have actively tried to position Małaszewicze on the global map—courting Chinese delegations, lobbying Warsaw, and crafting narratives of international relevance. He shares insights into how these symbolic and practical efforts illustrate both the ambitions and the limitations faced by peripheries striving to assert their place in global politics and connectivity networks. GUEST BIO: Wojciech Kębłowski is an urban researcher, photographer, and Assistant Professor in Urban Studies and Planning at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, with affiliations at the Université libre de Bruxelles. He will begin a new professorship at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in June 2025. His research sits at the intersection of urban, transport, and political geography, and draws on critical social and decolonial theory. It spans three main areas: the political economy and governance of “sustainable” transport, the urban geography of Global China, and alternatives to capitalist urbanism, including circular economy and degrowth practices. Wojciech's research is global in scope, with fieldwork and collaborations in diverse cities in Western Europe (Aubagne, Brussels, Luxembourg, Helsinki, Madrid), Eastern Europe (Sopot, Wrocław, Tallinn), China (Chengdu) and Cuba (Santiago). He uses a range of qualitative methods and is interested in photography as a research tool and a creative practice. Wojciech is involved in several international research projects, including LiFT (on fare-related mobility transitions), CARIN-PT (on flexible and on-demand transport), and previously led PUTSPACE and CIRCITY, focused on public transport and circular economies, respectively. John explores the wild forests and farmland of his local Scottish borders area.  It's a sparsely populated region where black panthers and lynx are quietly discussed by some of the locals.  John takes us through various lynx encounters, including two of his own, and describes his three experiences with large black cats – one seen nearby from a slow moving train, and one unnervingly close at night.  John starts the episode by explaining how his military background helps his observation and tracking skills. The Grinders are back for the first week of the greatest month of the year, that's right, May! A month so good that Spider-Man's aunt is even shares its name. What makes May so great? Well, there are many answers but few as good as the weather. As the season changes from Spring into Summer, the temperatures rise and the clothes come off.  As the temperatures are rising across the country, the attitude is also beginning to heat up. Clothes aren't the only things shed as the American people increasingly become more vocal. The American people want nothing less than to strip this administration of all its ill-gotten power. The Grinders stand with the American people as we push back against a fascist government that seems to be ramping up the atrocities on a weekly basis. Fortunately for the American people, they have video games and the RPGrinders to distract them from the terrible reality. What better way could there be to spend your time hidden in an underground bunker than to listen to all 821 episodes of RPGrinders?  If you don't have an underground bunker, then it's time to get your protest kit ready. It's getting warm so don't worry about bundling up but don't forget the umbrella. Make sure to eat first and drink plenty of fluids and be sure to bring extra with you. Most important of all is to download every episode of RPGrinders and don't worry about bringing headphones. Everyone will want to listen as they denounce tyranny.  The May flowers are in full bloom so maybe that is Break's excuse for trying to skip this week's news segment. While he was out sniffing flowers Frank, Eric, and gaming world moved on. Maybe Break will use that excuse to get out of work and stay home playing some of these Summer releases: Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 1, Wuchang Fallen Feathers, and an end of Summer release for the highly anticipated Borderlands 4. What could be better than one Michael B Jordan? That's right, two! He is back and playing dual roles in the Sinners. MBJ isn't the only one who is back as several Marvel MCU characters return for the next big team-up movie, The Thunderbolts.   It wouldn't be RPGrinders if we didn't do the greatest podcast segment known to mankind, the Stinkos. There may never have been a larger Stinko in Grinder history than the fall of democracy in the United States of America. The country will never be the same as some irreparable damage has already been done. Beautiful weather now gives the American people more power to fight back. As this weather warms up the protests against this wannabe dictatorship are only just beginning.  Completely unrelated to the weather and political corruption, the Grinders have a brand-new Panic Room. Frank has a devious offer from a malevolent entity. We can't say more without spoiling Frank's demented fun. With all of the oppression and fear mongering by the current administration it can be easy to fall into despair. Fear not, as the warmer weather will inspire more of us to stand up and push back. As we all march against evil in our short-shorts while listening to RPGrinders at full volume, we will see our numbers grow and their power diminish! This week we try a new AA game from former Ubisoft developers called Clair Obscur Expedition 33. It's inspired by Belle Époque France and JRPG's. This is the best game we've played this year. From the art style, to the music to the complex turn-based combat, this game has it all to make for a great game. The storytelling is incredible and the world they built is stunning. You have to see it to believe it. It will be hard to beat this game this year!We also review Split Fiction, the follow up to the 2021 Game of the Year: It Takes Two. In Split Fiction, you play either Mio or Zoe. Both are writers, one of science fiction and the other fantasy who end up in a simulation of their own stories. They have to work together to escape. It has great gameplay, gorgeous graphics and is a fun ride start to finish.Brett also gets his hands on the tech test for the extraction shooter Arc Raiders from Embark Studios. Embark is known for the game Brett is obsessed with called The Finals and this is their take on an extraction shooter genre. This game is hard but full of style. The graphics are incredible, the performance is outstanding and the world is very immersive with great sound design. We can't wait for this one to release later this year.Lastly, we talk about Borderlands 4 and our hype from the State of Play. It is going more open world than before and we can't wait to see what's around the corner. It looks great! We also have some not so fun news from Xbox where they have announced price increases for their consoles and video games later this year. Will this make it harder to sell new games? Well, we were ready to have a very positive episode, but here we are! Xbox has gone all the way ahead of most of the competition and confirmed the following. Console and accessories prices are jumping immediately. Xbox game prices will reach $80 by the end of the year. In a world where the first party is mostly producing divisive titles sitting in the ~80 open critic range, you have to imagine Xbox's financial situation can't be in a brilliant stop to step on a rake ahead of its competition. Yet, that's where things get even more interesting. Xbox's Q3 2025 results saw them at the industry's top publisher while also being the leader in games sold on PlayStation with at least four of their titles in the top 10. Xbox wants their money and the Dukes have plenty of thoughts on this. Is this going to push even more people into Game Pass? Will this give birth to a free tier of Game Pass? What of Cloud Streaming's growth when consoles are becoming extremely pricey. Meanwhile, it's already May and it feels as if we have enough fantastic games to begin our voting on Game Of The Year! Expedition 33 is the talk of the town alongside Oblivion and rightfully so, but it's fascinating just how many incredible experiences surround them. Unlikely heroes in Last Defense Academy, sleeper indie hits in Towerborne, and much more are around every corner. Who has time for all of this?
