Send us a textA group of middle-aged friends compete in an annual contest known as "The Long Talk," in which they must maintain a certain talking speed or get silenced forever. Strange things begin to happen when the friends start to become entangled in quantum mechanical machinations. On Episode 697 of Trick or Treat Radio we are joined by our old friend Double D for our December Patreon Takeover! He selected the films The Long Walk and Coherence for us to discuss. We also continue the age old debate of practical FX vs cgi, talk about the works of a little known author named Richard Bachman, and try to make sense of quantum mechanics. So grab your best talking shoes, pack plenty of extra glowsticks, and strap on for the world's most dangerous podcast!Stuff we talk about: Modern Horror franchises, Paranormal Activity, films that wear out their welcome, James Wan, Double D, Patreon Takeover, the Pale Paul Mooney of Podcasting, It: Welcome to Derry, Creepshow, practical fx vs. CGI, The Thing, The Shining, John Carpenter, Roblox gift cards, Minecraft, umbilical trauma, Fallout 76, Borderlands 2, Horizon, London After Midnight, Horror Express, Telly Savalas, All Hallow's Eve, 30 Ways to Die, Amanda Seyfried, American Horror Story, Dark Shadows, They, House of the Dead, Wolfcop, Dark Match, Dr. Giggles, Brendan Fraser, Carrie, Psycho, Jurassic Park, Darryl Hannah, Splash, Jason Goes to Hell, The Prince of Darkness, Trick or Treat, Body Bags, Don Calfa, A Haunted House, The Toolbox Murders, Spider Gates, Stranger Things 5 Vol. 1, Cobra Kai, WCUW, Ian Ziering, Sleepaway Camp, Wet Hot American Summer, Kimbo Slice, Wilfred Brimley, de-aging vs. recasting, Ready or Not: Here I Come, Samara Weaving, Lisa Frankenstein, Police Academy, Mad Max, The Thorn Trilogy, Teen Wolf, Thanksgiving, Dead Heat, Party Girl, City of Lost Children, Smallville, Frozen Caveman Lawyer, Stephen King, Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Richard Bachman, R.L. Canada's Game Daddy (Geoff Keighley) has unleashed the nominees for 2025's The Game Awards. There are many contenders to the GOTY throne, but who will be interrupted by a Fortnite commercial first? Also: we discuss Halo ending the console wars, Resident Evil leaks, Call of Duty's botched Ops, the auditory pain of Borderlands 4, the mountain of Yotei (also the game), and the correct way to Dispatch superheroes.
The book explores the disparities in education between the children of Nazi scientists and the ethnic Mexican children who attended segregated schools in El Paso.
This week Zach has dad stuff to do so Shannon and Justin hold it down discuss Black Friday shenanigans, Shannon "playfully" hurting himself, and Justin has been playing a lot of Borderlands 4.
Geographies of Relation: Diasporas and Borderlands in the Americas (U Michigan Press, 2024) offers a new lens for examining diaspora and borderlands texts and performances that considers the inseparability of race, ethnicity, and gender in imagining and enacting social change. Theresa Delgadillo crosses interdisciplinary and canonical borders to investigate the interrelationships of African-descended Latinx and mestizx peoples through an analysis of Latin American, Latinx, and African American literature, film, and performance. Not only does Delgadillo offer a rare extended analysis of Black Latinidades in Chicanx literature and theory, but she also considers over a century's worth of literary, cinematic, and performative texts to support her argument about the significance of these cultural sites and overlaps. Chapters illuminate the significance of Toña La Negra in the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, reconsider feminist theorist Gloria Anzaldúa's work in revising exclusionary Latin American ideologies of mestizaje, delve into the racial and gender frameworks Sandra Cisneros attempts to rewrite, unpack encounters between African Americans and Black Puerto Ricans in texts by James Baldwin and Marta Moreno Vega, explore the African diaspora in colonial and contemporary Peru through Daniel Alarcón's literature and the documentary Soy Andina, and revisit the centrality of Black power in ending colonialism in Cuban narratives. Geographies of Relation demonstrates the long histories of networks and exchanges across the Americas as well as the interrelationships among Indigenous, Black, African American, mestizx, Chicanx, and Latinx peoples. It offers a compelling argument that geographies of relation are as significant as national frameworks in structuring cultural formation and change in this hemisphere. Theresa Delgadillo is a Vilas Distinguished Professor of English and Chicanx/e and Latinx/e Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is also Director of the Chicanx/e and Latinx/e Studies Program. This week in the news: Take Two's stocks drop alongside the delay of GTA 6 and they're still slightly disappointed in the Borderlands 4 launch. Steam announced a bunch of new hardware including a new Steam Machine, VR headset, and controller. Will it be on par with console pricing? And one of the original devs for the first Saints Row game has Embracer's interest after talking about a revival of the series via a 1970s prequel. What have we been doing this week? Well Grif's brain is broken upon replaying a game that she'd already given a lot of grace. Is it really that bad or is she just bitter these days? Chicken is too good at RTS games and figured out how to absolutely dominate in a playtest for an upcoming game. And of course, "Friend Slop" as Chicken called it, is everywhere. With the recent Peak and Repo updates, there's plenty of laughs to go around. All this and more on this week's Infinite Respawn Podcast!
Dripping rock and roll by way of Long Island, Des Rocs and his guitar are here to stay. If you missed my last conversation with Des we get into his history, this time we're digging into his sound and to what his musical idenity is. He has a new song called "This Land" which is the theme to the new Borderlands 4 Video Game, and that is launching a whole new album due out sometime next year.

Each year, in recognition of the National Day of Mourning/Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, we examine how British colonialism is irrevocably intertwined with Shakespeare. Over the past four years, we explored this topic through close reading of Jyotsna Singh's Shakespeare and Postcolonial Theory. After completing our episodes on Shakespeare and Postcolonial Theory, we wanted to turn to highlighting and amplifying the work of artists, activists, and scholars who are working in decolonial Shakespeares. In this year's episode, we are joined by Dr. Katherine Gillen and Ruben Ramirez of the Borderlands Shakespeare Collectiva to discuss how artists, activists, scholars, and educators in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands engage with Shakespeare in ways that reflect their lived realities. We discuss the plays from this region that adapt or appropriate Shakespeare and how these texts can be used in the classroom or in production alongside Shakespeare's text to illuminate themes and engage new audiences. We also learn more about the work of Borderlands Shakespeare Colectiva and how they uplift and amplify this work, connecting scholarship with theatrical performance. For more on the work of Borderlands Shakespeare Colectiva, or to get involved, visit their website at https://borderlandsshakespeare.org/. With Kathryn Vomero Santos and Adrianna M. Santos, she co-founded the Borderlands Shakespeare Colectiva and is co-editing the three-volume anthology, The Bard in the Borderlands: An Anthology of Shakespeare Appropriations en La Frontera. She is also working on a monograph titled The Renaissance of Whiteness: The Classical Foundations of Shakespeare's Racial Politics, which examines Shakespeare's use of classical sources within the context of emerging racial capitalism. Ruben Ramirez is an MA student at Texas A&M- San Antonio and currently serving in a Graduate Assistantship Research position with the Borderlands Shakespeare Colectiva. His research interests include Latino/a/x literature, Ecocriticism, Environmental Justice, and Decolonial Theory. Borderlands Shakespeare Colectiva is an award-winning group of scholars, educators, artists, and activists who engage with Shakespeare in ways that reflect the lived realities of the U.S.–Mexico Borderlands. This episode of then & now features a panel from the “Future of History” conference moderated by UCLA Professor Brenda Stevenson, an award-winning historian of race, gender, slavery, and community. She introduces three UCLA historians whose work spans the U.S. and the globe: Professor Kelly Lytle Hernández, a MacArthur Fellow and leading scholar of race, immigration, and mass incarceration; Professor Sanjay Subrahmanyam, Distinguished Professor and global historian of the early modern world; and Professor Vivien Tejada, a rising scholar of 19th-century African American and Native American history. Lytle Hernández details her public-facing work, including Million-Dollar Hoods and Mapping Deportations, and her efforts with the Zinn Education Project to support teachers nationwide. Subrahmanyam draws on experiences teaching in Europe, South America, and India to outline global anxieties about the U.S. academy. Tejada emphasizes how the abrupt reversal of post-2020 hiring initiatives threatens future scholarship in Black, Native, and Latinx history.Together, the panelists explore the role of historians in shaping public narratives, covering topics such as “patriotic history,” big-data projects, archival access, controversy around AI, and the teaching of writing and critical literacy. They reflect on internal debates within the field: DEI backlash, community engagement, shrinking academic resources, objectivity, “woke-ism,” and the legacy of the Ginzburg–Hayden White debate. Brenda Stevenson holds the inaugural Hillary Rodham Clinton Chair in Women's History at St. John's College, Oxford University and the Nickoll Family Endowed Chair in History at UCLA. She is an internationally recognized scholar whose work bridges race, slavery, gender, family, and community in the United States and beyond. Her most recent book What is Slavery? was published by Cambridge University Press.Professor Kelly Lytle Hernández holds The Thomas E. Lifka Endowed Chair in History at UCLA. One of the nation's leading experts on race, immigration, and mass incarceration, she is the author of many award-winning books including Migra! A History of the U.S. Border Patrol and Bad Mexicans: Race, Empire, and Revolution in the Borderlands. For her historical and contemporary work, Professor Lytle Hernández was named a 2019 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow. Sanjay Subrahmanyam is the Distinguished Professor of History and Irving & Jean Stone Chair in Social Sciences at UCLA. A specialist of the early modern period (15th-18th centuries), his work ranges between studies of India and the Indian Ocean, the early modern European empires, and reflections on global history as a field of research. In 2024, he published Across the Green Sea: Histories from the Western Indian Ocean, 1440-1640 (Austin: University of Texas Press, 2024), with UK and Indian editions. Vivien Tejada is an Assistant Professor of U.S. history at UCLA. She is a scholar of the nineteenth-century United States with a focus on the Civil War era. Her research interests lie in the intersections between Native American history and African American history. Her current project, “Unfree Soil: Empire, Labor, and Coercion in the Upper Mississippi River Valley, 1812-1861,” examines the relationship between slavery and conquest in the Upper Midwest.

Xbox's big bet for bringing PCs to the living room has officially been undercut. This week, Valve announced three (!) different pieces of hardware. First, there is the Steam Machine, which serves as the strongest competitor to consoles. While still very much a PC, the Steam Machine packs a lot of punch for a small device and could be a force if priced well. Second, a brand new VR headset in the Steam Frame. Despite Meta having massive first-party support, Valve has decided to challenge a space that many of us thought was finished growing. Third, and finally, is a Steam Controller. It's horrendous looking and makes the Duke look ergonomic. How does Valve's aggressive hardware plans disrupt Xbox and does any lingering appeal for the PC in the living room by Xbox remain? The Dukes unite and dive straight in. ...in which we are joined by broadcaster, author, long-distance walker and former MP for Penrith and the Border, Rory Stewart, to discuss his new book, Middleland – Dispatches from the Borders. In a wide-ranging discussion about the 'lost kingdom of Middleland', Dave chats with Rory about long walks through the Lake District and Borderlands, about the joys of post-walk pub stays (warm socks, a book by the fire), and the meditative pace of multi-day rambles. Moving to farming, Rory raises the alarm over a new era of small farm 'clearance', urges caution over rewilding a heritage landscape, and argues that binary thinking is impeding a subsidy regime that would champion nature-based farming. Grappling with a 'Middleland' identity, we consider why the reality of Cumbria – sparsely populated, mountainous, complex – questions so many assumptions at the heart of modern politics, and learn why we should not lose confidence in our National Parks. Facing our quickfire questions, Rory describes his earliest Cumbrian memory (rescue from a snow-blocked A6 aged four), his fondness for Penrith fudge and his love of Striding Edge. Closing on a note of positivity; Rory reflects on the fact that – despite its challenges – Cumbria remains a place in which tens of thousands of people contribute to a place that brings "a type of joy, meaning and happiness that is elusive elsewhere". Rory's new book, Middleland, is out today.

Tonight's guest comes to us from Florida, former Border Patrol agent Chris, who spent years patrolling one of the most remote and haunted stretches of land in America. A place where UFOs streak across silent skies, thermal cameras chase phantom figures, and the ghosts of the past refuse to rest. When night falls on the Texas borderlands, the desert comes alive with more than smugglers and shadows. Chris recounts his years on the line between the living and the dead, from discovering long-lost bodies under the desert moon to hearing stories of faceless women and spectral children in the Otay Mountains. His interest in the paranormal led him from patrols to Lovecraft's mythos.More information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/ep-357-ghosts-of-the-borderlands/Hidden Cults (Promo)It is a documentary-style podcast that digs deep into the world's most extreme, elusive, and explosive fringe groups. The "where are the games?!" crowd is having a bad week, because PlayStation's most recent State of Play showed that plenty is indeed incoming for your PS5. For starters, Insomniac's long-dormant Wolverine has reemerged. Revealed four years ago and having clearly gone through some tribulations behind-the-scenes, Wolverine is slated for PlayStation 5 next fall, and it looks violent and grisly in all the right ways. Coming sooner from first party, however, is Housemarque's Returnal sequel Saros, launching in March of '26. It looks awesome, and we're to get back to shootin'. But as if these two games didn't give us enough to talk about, there's more: Microsoft Flight Simulator is the next Xbox-aligned game PS5-bound (with Forza Horizon 6 somewhere behind it), the original Deus Ex is getting the remaster treatment, a God of War DualSense has been revealed in recognition of the franchise's 20th anniversary, Kojima both revealed a Physint poster and showed off his new horror title OD, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! What's going on with the PS5 Pro's many technical issues? Will NetEase's F2P game Ananta be as insane as it seems? Why do we have such a problem with the premise of licensed games? Is Boar's Head's fine deli meat becoming too expensive for the average consumer?
