Kiwi technology that can warn of an earthquake is going global. EQC and Massey University scientists have tested low cost early warning sensors, which gives notice of a quake. The project has made significant steps from a vision to hard data, and has successfully developed algorithms that can drive an early warning system.The findings were published recently in Informatics, a leading Swiss open access journal on information and communication technologies, in an article titled "Saving Precious Seconds", and have also gained interest from scientists all over the world who have jumped on board to share their information. Infact, as lead scientist Raj Prasanna tells Lynn Freeman, the Kiwi project has unexpectedly created an amazing new global community of excellence.

Our internal crises. And when we deal with crises often we feel like a tree that's lost a limb, where we are left with a scar that we must learn to grow around. These events change who we are, and the only way we can create meaning despite the challenges we face is by choosing courage.Infact, in nearly every story of human purpose I have come across whether it be through this podcast, or else where it is courage that defines us before anything else. Ahh, stress, our bestest buddy. Our forever companion. The voice in our head telling us how much we suck. The ticking clock rushing us to work and home every day.Yeah, you know what stress is, but what is it REALLY? And how can it be so many DIFFERENT things?Can you define it if someone asks you? Beyond whatever it is in that particular moment that is bothering you? Like, generally, what is stress?Well, Mirriam-Webster tell us (or we tell each other) that (and these are the definitions relevant to this discussion):1: a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work, etc.She uses meditation as a way of reducing/relieving stress.Hormones are released into the body in response to emotional stress.He needs help with stress management. [=ways to deal with stress]2: something that causes strong feelings of worry or anxietyI'm sorry for being grumpy. I've been under (a lot of) stress at work lately.She is dealing with the stresses of working full-time and going to school.He talked about the stresses and strains of owning a business.Ok, so mental tension (something you feel) caused by problems like anxiety and worry.Yeah, ok, that's pretty close. But it's also very general. And ambiguous.And what generalizations and ambiguity suggest is that we don't rally know. And I'm cool saying I don't really know what stress is. But I DO know what it feels like. Generally, anyway.But I'll also argue that defining stress is like defining pornography in that you know it when you see it. It's hard to define exactly what it IS is difficult. MOREOVER, this generalizing causes us to lose perspective because we LUMP everything BAD we feel into one big feeling we call STRESS.And I would argue that we would, ideally, like to be more emotionally intelligent. Don't we want to be able to deconstruct our feelings, use more accurate terminology, and better UNDERSTAND how we feel. And then, certainly, it follows that this would facilitate us being able to understand WHY it happens and HOW we can address it? Because wouldn't it be awesome to change things that negatively affect our lives like fear, feeling unsafe, anxiety, and limiting beliefs?IN FACT, I'll argue that being able to piece apart the monster we call stress is CRITICAL to us changing and growing away from the difficulties of life and more TOWARD the peaceful and calm experience many of us prefer.In this Episode I try to take apart stress and give it better names and even talk a little bit about potential causes and solutions. Not to OMIT stress from our lives, but to change our relationship with it and help us understand what it is to be human. Hopefully just a little better. Or as Dan Harris says, 10% Happier.

Infact, what if the possibilities for a more purposeful life were not about ego, and instead completely reliant on the unique contribution we make within our tribes.And in leading on from those questions: What can science tell us about how our brain responds to attributes such as trust, belonging and our desire to give back to others? Could it be that ‘purpose' itself is evolutionary? Today's good conversation is a good one and I can't wait to dive in.Today's guest is Paul Zak. Paul is the founding Director of the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies and Professor of Economics, Psychology and Management at Claremont Graduate University. He is also the founder of Immersion Neuroscience. For more than two decades his research has taken him from the Pentagon to Fortune 50 boardrooms to the rainforest of Papua New Guinea. All this in a quest to understand the neuroscience of humans of what makes humans tick.Paul has been obsessed with human connection for as long as he can remember. His focus on understanding connection led to his ground-breaking research on oxytocin. And all of this work led to the best title ever: nope, it is not PhD or keynote speaker, it is Dr. Love.His latest book, Trust Factor: The Science of Creating High Performance Companies, uses neuroscience to measure and manage organizational cultures to accelerate business outcomes. His 2012 book, The Moral Molecule: The Source of Love and Prosperity, recounted his unlikely discovery of the exact neurochemical that drives trust, love, and human morality.On that note, get ready to dive into the wonder and the magic of what I am going to call Neuro Purpose...with the one and only Paul Zak.

As a new mum, your baby's sleep habits can easily dominate conversations.   Is she sleeping through the night? How often does she wake over night? Does she self soothe? Does she sleep in the cot, my baby will only sleep on me. You will ask each other overe coffee. We search the internet, books, social media and chat to other mum's in order to gage what is normal and to find answers to the problem of our child's sleep.  Throughout the first year of our child's life we  chase the elusive goal of sleeping through the night convinced that if we can just reach that point everything will be okay.We wrongly assume that everyone else's baby is sleeping through the night and worry that we are doing something wrong. We desperately try to follow safe sleeping guidelines, despite the fact that our babies have not got the memo that after 9 months of being inseparable from their mother, they are now expected to sleep alone in a cot. Sleep is a pillar of wellbeing. It affects our physical and mental health, the way we parent, our relationship, our ability to perform our work (paid or unpaid) and so much more. It is unsurprising then that we place so much emphasis on our baby sleeping well. Because if our baby is not sleeping well, chances are neither are we. In our modern society however, it seems we have lost touch with what normal infant sleep looks like. Coupled with the fact that the demands of modern life are not conducive with wakeful babies, we often find ourself desperate for a solution. In our desperation many of us turn to sleep programs or sleep school. I know because I have been there. We convince ourselves that patting their mattress or shushing is enough comfort. We ignore that deep yearning to go to and comfort our baby. To bring them into our bed for a cuddle. We tell ourselves and others that is it working, and maybe it is until a sleep regression come along. Or teething. Or sickness. Or one of the many other disruptions that are so normal in this phase of life. Then what? Whether you choose to bed share, place your baby in their own room, co-sleep, sleep train or any other approach, sleep is going to play a big role in your parenthood experience. In this episode we dive into what sleep looks like in our home. Spoiler alert, it is not even close to textbook. We don't have all the answers, like you we are on the journey to figuring out how to get enough sleep in this phase of life, but we can promise you that this conversation will leave you feeling a little lighter, will take the shame out of unconventional sleep situations and will leave you feeling more informed and prepared to tackle sleep – regardless of what it looks like in your house. Now, as always we want to put the disclaimer that we are not experts in infant sleep. Infact we are not experts in anything. In this episode Bree sits down with Kel to discuss her experience sustaining a third degree (3B) tear during the homebirth of her second child, Emmy. Bree's homebirth was positive, empowering and everything she had hoped for. However despite having had an undisturbed physiological birth, Bree was surprised to realize that she wasn't experiencing the post-birth euphoria that so many had described. Infact, she seemed to be in quite a lot of pain. After some time spent bonding with her baby girl the midwives suggested that they do a routine assessment of tears. Initially they identified that Bree has sustained a second degree tear that could benefit from suturing however during the repair concerns were raised that it was infact a fourth degree tear. The decision was made to transfer to hospital for a more thorough assessment. Once in hospital it was established that Bree's tearing was of the third degree and would require surgical repair. Tune in to hear about the process of repairing tears after a homebirth, how this affected Bree's feelings about her birth and how her recovery has been so far. Themes: Third degree tear, 3B tear, severe tear, perineal tear, natural birth, homebirth, physiological birth, midwifery-led care, private midwife, doula, hypnobirthing, Hypnobirth Australia, hospital transfer after homebirth,

Their incessant rhetoric about how wealthy citizens don't pay their fair share of the tax burden are belied by the fact that the top 1% of American wage earners pay 38.5% of all income taxes; the highest burden in the WORLD! Their insistance that an economic system that is run by the federal gov't from a centralized location 1000's of miles from where many of it's citizens live, administered by people who have never run anything, much less a business, with an emphasis on political patronage to donors and friends vs on products and profits is more efficient than a system that functions based upon the needs of consumers, which rewards risk-takers who innovate and create and produce products that make our lives longer, healthier and happier. (a system that has failed everywhere it has been implemented). Their lies have been force-fed down the throats of unsuspecting Americans by the left-wing-nut-media…or the so-called 4th estate, their lies have been shoved down our vulnerable kids throats in K-12 & College indoctrination camps, in movies and television shows, and of course on so-called social media. So let's flesh this stuff out PJ.   SOCIAL JUSTICE: We have discussed the root causes of black poverty and it's associated crime on several podcasts, so let's just do a quick review. The common belief peddled by BLM, ANTIFA and neo-liberals in general is that gangs of racist, rogue, white cops are hunting and assassinating young black males by the 100's every nite. IN FACT (not their truth..but in actual fact), a grand total of 15 so-called unarmed black males were killed by cops in 2019. At the advent of the welfare state, launched by Lyndon Johnson 56 yrs ago in his War On Poverty..which I call the War On Sanity, the black out of wedlock birth rate was about 23.5%. The War on Sanity's implied promise was that the state could replace the father as head of household. Since 1965, the out of wedlock, single parent birth rate in the black community has more than tripled to 77%. Neo-liberals LOVE their welfare state, and will NEVER admit that the cause of any racial injustice is of their own making, but let me refresh your memory as to what they have wrought, because it turns out that the gov't can NEVER replace the father as head of household: Fatherless children of all races, face the following stats: *4 x greater risk of living in poverty. 4x *85% of youths in prisons grew up in a fatherless home. *More than 90% of all felons, across the nation, were raised in fatherless homes. 90% *63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes – 5 times the average. *90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes – 32 times the average.  *80% of rapists come from fatherless homes –14 times the average. 80% *71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless...

In today's episode we chat with one of the UK's most inspiring people, former gang leader and u-turned public speaker, poet, musician and rehabilitation leader - Karl Lokko. Whether it's visiting Necker Island with Richard Branson or attending the Royal wedding, Karl's remarkable journey is a far cry from his Brixton Badlands past. Karl is one of the UK's most connected under 30 year olds, he now holds a platform for true change, helping thousands of youth to escape the gang culture on the very dangerous streets of South London. As a former gang leader himself, life hasn't always been so easy. Infact his u-turn is nothing less than truly breathtaking. And his journey to get to where he is now, even more jaw dropping!From the age 12, Karl found himself on the wrong side of the tracks when his bicycle was stolen a few too many times. In his defense he formed his own gang of misfits, something Brixton wasn't short of. A product of the Windrush generation decades before him, he was used to seeing displacement all around him. Which gave everyone and anyone a reason to fight.   “There's a reason for rage, they so won't that scare you straight? Well, If what you're doing is because you are already scared, that is going to fuel your rage” - Karl [17:35] Unfortunately the violence didn't stay on a scrappy playground level for long. By the age of 14 he had already witnessed his friends being shot, been shot at himself and carried his own knife wounds as battle scars. Scars that he held as a trophy to go with the ‘strike them before they strike you' mindset that permeated both his gang and the culture that followed - with or against him. “There's a lack of remorse, everyone can feel our pain ‘cause I'm feeling it, everyone else becomes fair game” - Karl [16:00] But his story isn't only one of a bleak distraught childhood, in today's episode you'll hear the remarkable story of how Karl turned his back on the violence and literally earned himself a seat at the table with some of the world's most powerful and influential people. Karl now heads up a charitable organisation that transforms gang members into respectable citizens, helping them see life outside of gangs. Or as Alex calls it, his “love gang” - “goosebumps” as Mimi puts it. “I was inspired by bible stories of sheppard boys throwing rocks at political, economical and cultural giants called Goliath. Those emails were my stones and i had to throw them out there” - Karl [47.30] We are truly honoured to talk with Karl.
