With a style that's reminiscent of the emotions we felt from the early 90's R&B, Jasmine Jordan spreads messages of self-love, love of others, and women empowerment. With incredible range, storytelling, and passion, Jordan captivates audiences with relatable narratives that convey love's enthralling and heartbreaking dynamics. Jordan grew up in Lacy Washington, where her love of music was influenced by R&B and POP sensations Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Tamia, and Alicia Keys. She released her first EP in January 2015 and has since then gone on three west coast tours, opened up for Grammy-nominated R&B singer Joe and released another EP called 'Things Change', followed by consistent releases of new singles. Her first single of 2018 was a female empowerment anthem for every woman's Summer playlist titled 'Beloved'. This R&B track embodies and emotes the superhero strength every woman has: the power of discernment. Followed by: 'Forbidden Fruit' and the latest single 'Choose Wisely', both R&B tracks that embody and emote the human in all of us. Jordan is now gearing up to release this new project 'Innermission'. Influenced by POP, HipHop, Soul, R&B, and Groove. These elements can all be heard in her newest project which walks us through the self-love journey she has been on. A journey that has helped her embrace imperfection, heartbreak, hope, passion, sensitivity, love, and the complexities that come with being on a journey with the goal of becoming her most whole version. 'Innermission' is her most honest project to date. On this week's The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview Jasmine Jordan. One of the projects that Jasmine has worked on was about housing segregation in the dorms at MSU. Basically, Black and Latinx students are hyper concentrated in dorms on the edge of campus. This may contribute to feelings of isolation and alienation among them. While other universities have gone above and beyond to address students of color and housing, MSU has not. Studies show that students can spend up to 70% of their time in their dorms. Below is a paragraph from the introduction of the study:For a school like Michigan State University, which requires all freshmen to live on campus, this means that experiences inside of them will have a significant impact on students' welfare and their overall attitudes towards their university. Students do typically see gains from staying in the dorms, including African American students.2 However, the racial composition of these dorms may affect the wellbeing of those who live there, because Black and LatinX students who choose to go to Predominately White Universities/ Institutions (PWIs) routinely face challenges associated with their minority. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. On February 14, 2018, like any other day, Fred Guttenberg's two children left the house to go to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. But after a former student attacked the school with a semi-automatic weapon, 17 people did not come home that day, including Fred's daughter, Jaime. Jordana and Shannon speak to Fred about his grief, his close relationship with President-elect Joe Biden, and how he channeled his pain into action to combat gun violence in America. In recent years, entrepreneur, activist, author, and Jewish mom of two Jenna Arnold criss-crossed the U.S., having conversations with countless groups of white women about their identities and their roles in our country. The result is her book, Raising Our Hands: How White Women Can Stop Avoiding Hard Conversations, Start Accepting Responsibility, and Find Our Place on the New Frontlines. Jordana and Shannon have a wide-ranging conversation with Jenna about what it means to be white and Jewish women in America. The trio discuss why talking about race can be difficult, how to learn from our mistakes, and how to start those much-needed "hard conversations with Uncle Bob on Thanksgiving." On a “totally chill” late-fall day, Jordana and Shannon chat with multi-hyphenate author, photojournalist, and producer Deborah Copaken, who’s a columnist at The Atlantic and a writer for Netflix’s Emily in Paris. The mom of three was also once an avid biker — she’d bike 20 miles on the regular, without breaking a sweat. But then she got Covid-19 in March, and things haven’t been the same since. Deborah — whose memoir, Lady Parts, is coming out next year — chats with our hosts about living with long-haul Covid-19, detailing her struggle with breathing problems, heart-rate spikes, exhaustion, hope, and more. Fertility struggles impact so many families in myriad ways — though often the burden and the blame fall on women. Dana Sussman's story flips the narrative, when she and her husband discover that her husband is not producing any sperm. Several uncomfortable and emotional surgeries later — plus countless doctors visits, egg retrievals, and more — the couple are now parents of two children. With remarkable candor, Dana shares her unique journey with Jordana and Shannon, and they also discuss the ways in which access to fertility treatments may be limited in the coming year, due to possible changes to healthcare access. Remember the measles outbreak in 2018 to 2019? Misinformation and distrust for the government were significant factors that contributed to the dangerous spread of the highly contagious disease within many ultra-Orthodox communities in New York. In December 2019 our hosts Jordana and Shannon spoke with Blima Marcus, a nurse practitioner and professor who helped curtail the spread in her community through education and compassion. In this week’s Call Your Mother Rewind, at a time in which Covid-19 infections are high within some ultra-Orthodox communities, we revisit our conversation with Blima, unpacking how misinformation and the perception of antisemitism remain relevant today. This episode of Rhetoricity comes to you from the 2016 Modern Language Association Convention in Austin, Texas. At the convention, I spoke with the University of Southern California's Virginia Kuhn. Dr. Kuhn is an associate professor in the Media Arts + Practice Division of USC's School of Cinematic Arts. In this interview, we discuss three of Dr. Kuhn's recent and ongoing projects: First, the Library Machine, which was until recently known as "LibViz." That project is the third case study in a recent article coauthored by Dr. Kuhn: "Coping with the Big Data Dump: Towards a Framework for Enhanced Information Representation." From there, we turn to the Video Analysis Tableau, an online toolkit that makes a vast archive of digital video accessible and searchable for a wide variety of users and uses. Finally, we discuss Future Texts: Subversive Performance and Feminist Bodies, an 2015 Parlor Press anthology that Dr. Kuhn co-edited. Along the way, we discuss cinematic conventions, gender, Afrofuturism, YouTube, and how rhetoric and rhetoricians figure in to Dr. Kuhn's various projects. Jon Williams is one of those rare musicians who play and record for the sheer joy of it, free from expectations of fame -- and uses that freedom to produce fabulous music. Jon is a blues and rock and roll guitarist who has played in bands like Midlife Crisis, Midnight Lightning and now the Little Brother’s Blues Band just because he was having fun.Thye recently released their second album, Spirits, Sinners, Shrews & Blues, a two cd set of classic Chicago blues covers, We play tunes from the set and talk with Jon this Friday. Contemporary R&B newcomer Jasmine Jordan recently released her debut EP Time Travel and kicked off a tour throughout the west coast to support the EP and her new single "Best I Can,". The Washington State native now transplanted to LA manages to bring back the style of 90’s R&B pop, but with a fresh take and modern feel to her songs about love and frustration. Our interview with her Friday should be all of the first and noe of teh second.
