Kyle Harris has spent the last decade turning social media into a business growth engine. His journey started in the early days of digital marketing, building a strong following on Twitter and becoming a standout on Stickam, a live-streaming platform where he hosted a weekly show for nearly 1,000 engaged viewers. That ability to capture attention and create community set the foundation for what came next.In 2013, he moved to Las Vegas and quickly tapped into the rise of Vine, growing a large audience and recognizing the power of influencer marketing before most brands caught on. By 2014, he became Social Media Director at the Stratosphere Hotel, where he launched the hotel's first influencer campaign—leveraging his Vine network to create buzz and drive engagement. He also introduced live streaming as a marketing tool, broadcasting the hotel's SkyJump experience via Periscope, long before live video became mainstream. His career expanded across industries, refining his expertise in strategy, content, and analytics. That led him to work with Bar Rescue's Jon Taffer, where he helped scale Taffer's digital presence, facilitated his connection with Gary Vaynerchuk for one of The Ask Gary Vee Show's highest-performing episodes, and developed a crossover campaign between Bar Rescue and SHOWTIME's Shameless—a collaboration that earned a Shorty Award nomination.
It's Tuesday, and we're looking at the biggest stories of the week ahead. First, Mayor Johnston's big proposal of a sales tax for affordable housing failed in last week's election, so what will Mayor Mike tackle next? Another strategy to fund affordable housing or something else entirely? Then, changes to the Mile High's trash collection service are on the horizon — will less recycling and more composting have better outcomes for the environment? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi do some post-election analysis, dig into the hot trash debate, and talk about one listener's comments about the physical side effects of being a decade into cannabis legalization. We discussed the post-mortem for 2R that Kyle Harris reported for Denverite. What do you think Mayor Mike should focus on next? Colorado's election results are in sharp contrast to the national picture. What's behind the state's move from purple to a very solid blue? And how does the Colorado Republican party differ from the national one? We speak with Seth Masket, a professor and blogger who's been following the GOP over the past four years for an upcoming book. Then, he's influenced JD Vance; now Patrick Deneen, author of "Why Liberalism Failed," is CU's visiting conservative scholar. And, while all eyes have been on the presidential election, Denver had a lot of local issues to consider, from slaughterhouses to school funding. Denverite's Kyle Harris joins us.

In today's episode, we dive into (a relatively new field in the US) the fascinating world of 'healthy/performance lighting' with Kyle Harris. Join host Pete Moore as they explore Brainlit technology, a Swedish company that creates healthier indoor environments by mimicking the natural spectrum of sunlight through advanced LED modulation. Kyle and Pete discuss expanding partnerships with major sports teams like the Sacramento Kings, tackling market challenges, and the impressive patent portfolio that underpins Brainlit's revolutionary approach. We'll also touch on the technology's journey into various markets, the quantifiable benefits for athlete performance and overall wellness, and the future-proof nature of lighting solutions making waves in the US sports sector. Inspired by Tord Wengren, one of the team behind behind Bluetooth and a platform expert from companies like Samsung and Huawei, Brainlet aims to revolutionize indoor lighting. Under Kyle's influence, the company focuses on modulating and controlling LED lights to replicate the perfect sunlight spectrum indoors. This innovative approach not only creates healthier work and living environments but also aligns with the natural ways in which sunlight energizes and keeps people focused, reminiscent of the benefits our ancestors experienced. This technology has been used in Europe for quite a while and has recently starting gaining traction in the states. Harris states, "Companies that we work with, the professional teams especially, tell their players, 'We have installed for your benefit lights that make you recover better, sleep better, that can energize you before a game and decompress you post game.' I would say, conservatively, there's a 10 year difference in the understanding of light tech and health and wellness between Europe and the US to some extent, and how they look at light. Because of we come out of the Nordics, there's a much better understanding of the power of light." Key themes discussed Entering new markets and educating resistant leaders. Exercise benefits, lighting impact on athletes, ROI. Light system enhances health, wellness in various environments. Future-proof design allows for continuous evolution. Challenges in light tech and market traction. Investment in new sports facilities for next generation. Custom health solutions for optimal indoor environment. A few key takeaways: Brainlit Technology and Its Benefits: Brainlit specializes in creating healthy indoor environments by modulating LED light to mimic the natural sunlight spectrum. This tech offers significant health benefits including improved productivity, better sleep patterns, and reduced sick days. Strategic Partnerships in Sports: Brainlit has formed partnerships with major sports organizations, including the Sacramento Kings and others. These collaborations demonstrate the effectiveness of their technology in enhancing athletes' performance and overall wellness, further expanding their reach to the English Premier League and other major leagues. Market Education and Challenges: One of the prominent challenges discussed is the necessity of educating architects, construction teams, and potential clients about the benefits of healthy lighting. Communication and timely implementation remain key barriers, especially in new builds and the fragmented school district market. Holistic and Future-Proof Solutions: Brainlit offers versatile and adaptive lighting systems that cater to specific facility needs, such as providing optimized lighting during unconventional hours and for jet lag mitigation. Their solutions are designed to be future-proof, with remote accessibility management to allow for ongoing upgrades. Enterprise and Support Staff Focus: Beyond targeting athletes, Brainlit is emphasizing an enterprise solution that supports not only players but also coaches and support staff. This broader approach helps create a holistic wellness environment for everyone involved, and positions them as a comprehensive solution in various vertical markets including health clubs, sports, and studio markets. Johnston's priorities one year into his term are familiar – tackling the high cost of housing, reducing homelessness and rebuilding trust with the police department. He told Denverite reporter Kyle Harris he's optimistic about making continued progress.
After a year in office, what does Mayor Mike Johnston think he's accomplished? Yesterday he gave the annual State of the City speech at the Paramount Theater, pointing out his housing wins and what he sees as a successful approach to welcoming newcomers. He also unveiled some projects in the works, like plans for creating a more vibrant downtown, the development of a “trust patrol” with Denver police, and a new citywide volunteer effort called “Give 5 Mile High”. But when it comes to sweeping political speeches, the devil is in the details — host Bree Davies and producer Olivia Jewell Love dive deeper into the mayor's words, actions, and the numbers to figure out what it all means for Denver and the mayor's few years. Olivia mentioned Kyle Harris' Denverite piece on the businesses on Broadway and the website for the Give 5 Mile High program where you can submit to be a community partner. You can watch the State of the City on the City of Denver's Youtube; the Denver Gazette also has a full transcript of the speech. There are two very distinctive, very green buildings being built in Denver right now — maybe you've seen them? One purports to be the country's first “carbon positive” hotel with a facade reminiscent of an aspen tree, and the other has got a giant crack down the middle that's going to be filled with native plants and tenants doing yoga. So what does this architectural mini-movement say about Denver today? Denverite senior reporter Kyle Harris recently toured both The Populus and One River North, and he's on today with host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi to give us the inside story. Oh, and we've got pics of both of these buildings on our Instagram so you can see them for yourself. In June 2020, as Black Lives Matter protests filled Denver's streets, the city's walls and streets were also painted with images and messages of the movement. Denver commissioned a large Black Lives Matter street mural. Well-known Denver muralist Thomas "Detour" Evans painted a series of portraits of Black people killed at the hands of police. But a lot of that art was temporary; it's been painted over or has faded away. Artist Adri Norris and activist Lindsay Minter reflect on why that is and what that means. The mural of Breonna Taylor by artists Thomas "Detour" Evans and Hiero Veiga can be found at 2845 Walnut Street in Denver. To see photos of the mural, visit CPR.org/podcast/off-the-walls. Denver artists Grow Love and Alexandrea Pangburn had noticed a pattern: Most of the opportunities for muralists were going to men. When they connected with other female artists who felt the same way, the idea for Babe Walls — a mural festival celebrating all female and non-binary artists — was born. Babe Walls would showcase local talent and, hopefully, spark some change. But for the artists behind what was originally going to be a one-time event, Babe Walls has had more impact than they'd ever expected. The Babe Walls 2021 murals can be found along the Ralston Creek Trail in Arvada, where Ralston Road meets Lamar Street. When Fathima Dickerson was approached by an artist who wanted to paint a mural of her, she was surprised. To Fathima of Welton Street Café—Denver's oldest Black-owned restaurant—it seemed random. But to the artists, Jodie Herrera and Miles Toland, Fathima embodied the idea of community they wanted to capture in their Five Points mural. As Fathima navigates challenges and changes with Welton Street Café, the mural has served as a source of hope. You can find the mural in a parking lot off Walnut Street between 27th and 28th Streets in Denver. To see photos of the mural, visit CPR.org/podcast/off-the-walls. Painting his first mural was a powerful experience for artist David Ocelotl Garcia. But a few years ago, that mural, "Huitzilopochtli," was painted over, without permission. David set out to bring the mural back, but he didn't know how that would go. No one in Colorado had attempted what he was going to do. In the process, David discovered the beauty in not just making art, but reviving it. To learn more about the Chicano/a/x Murals of Colorado Project, visit chicanomuralsofcolorado.com. Emanuel Martinez started a community mural movement in Denver in the early 1970s, bringing colorful life to the local Chicano Movement. His mural "La Alma" is a central part of the historic La Alma Lincoln Park neighborhood where he painted it more than 45 years ago. But other murals Emanuel painted at the time have been wiped out. And now, someone very close to him is fighting for Chicano murals like his to be protected and preserved. You can find the mural at the La Alma Recreation Center at 1325 W 11th Ave in Denver. Mayor Mike Johnston is tackling Denver's homelessness crisis head on, but the city might not be able to wait for long. When Denverite reporter Kyle Harris spent 21 hours at a calzone shop on Broadway, he met a business owner who's been pushed past his limit and heard rumors of a possible violent revolt spreading through encampments. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi sit down with Kyle to talk about what else he saw that night and what that charged situation on Broadway says about the interconnected nature of our unhoused crisis. Plus, another round of wins and fails of the week — aka, our Rocky Mountain highs and lows. Paul talked about UFOs in Southern Colorado, the Colorado Doula Project, Deion Sander's post-game interview last Saturday, and Bomani Jones' insights in this terrific documentary. Bree discussed sexual assault in the music scene and a local abortion clinic's major milestone. Kyle talked about Barry's on Broadway and the new “bike bus” near Sloan's Lake. We're less than a month into Mike Johnston's first term as mayor, and things are already off to a bumpy start — some media outlets reported this week that the mayor would not enforce homeless encampment sweeps. Turns out that wasn't quite the case. Plus, Suncor continues to fail, RTD is actually winning, and Denver Parks and Rec gets a well-deserved pat on the back. Host Bree Davies is joined by producer and chief conspiracy theorist Paul Karolyi and regular fave Joshua Emerson, comedian and co-chair of the Denver American Indian Commission. And as always, newsletter editor Peyton Garcia shares her best bets for your weekend — think brewery birthdays, vegan mania, Aurora chef celebrations, and more! For more on the rollout of Mayor Johnston's homelessness plan, check out this helpful piece from our pal Kyle Harris at Denverite. Paul mentioned the Aloft Hotel's new vacancies, Cultivando's air monitoring program in Commerce City and a new local investment opportunity. Bree talked about that big green building on Kalamath, her love for the Northside's Ashland Rec Center, the Denverite piece on The Gathering Place-operated motel shelter shutting down, and her husband's UMS party this weekend. Josh talked about RTD's historic rate decrease and the prospects for this year's sweet corn harvest. Mike Johnston will be sworn in as Denver's 46th mayor on Monday, and he's already making moves. He hired a transition team and packed his calendar with community listening sessions. But will he roll out his “micro-communities” plan for homelessness that he campaigned so hard on? What about handling the perceptions and realities of public safety that Denver has been struggling with? And our most pressing issue: Can Mike make downtown cool again? Host Bree Davies is joined by producer Paul Karolyi and returning fave, Westword editor Patty Calhoun, to talk through this week's cover story on how Denver's new belt buckle-wearing mayor could really help Denver get its mojo back. Patty mentioned Kyle Harris's reporting for Denverite on the status of the permit for the Park Hill Golf Course, the Museum of Illusions coming to 16th St. Mall, and 9News' recent reporting on 911 wait times. Patty also talked about Stephen Brackett's idea to start a city office of a “night mayor.” He was on our show sharing more of his ideas to turn around Denver's nightlife back in April. It's Friday, and we're talking about all the local stories that mattered this week. After sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers, our Denver Nuggets are waiting to tip off in their first-ever NBA Finals. But are they really “our” Nuggets? Or are they billionaire owner Stan Kroenke's Nuggets? And what exactly is he planning to build in the 55 acres of empty parking lots around Ball Arena? “Silent Stan” never talks to the press, so producer Paul Karolyi is sitting down with DNVR Nuggets co-host Adam Mares and Denverite senior reporter Kyle Harris to talk about what the Nuggets' playoff run means for the whole city — even non-basketball fans. They also dig into the planned demolition of the 1stBank Center, a new inflatable amusement park in Lafayette, and the state GOP's fundraising troubles. Being pre cellphone, Working at a Scottish butcher shop, and recording drums with 18 mics. Lindsey Mackin (Annabelle Chairlegs) “Annabelle Chairlegs oscillates between glitz and grit. A collision of adrenaline-meets-anxiety, Annabelle Chairlegs' sound is built on desert noir, bluesy guitar riffs, and laced together with understated traces of psychedelia. Helmed by Lindsey Mackin's thunderous, howling voice, the Austin four-piece churns out singular, reverberating work simmering with both dark dreaminess and ostentation. Formed in 2014 following guitarist-vocalist and song writer Mackin's move from Santa Fe to Austin, the line-up now with Derek Vaughan Nunez Strahan on bass, Nick Cornetti on drums and Kyle Harris on guitar. Since then, the band has been cemented as a ubiquitous presence in Austin venues, including sets at both Levitation Festival and The Austin City Limits Music Festival, while simultaneously amplifying their musical aesthetic. 2015 debut 'Watermelon Summer' offered an airy, gentle blend of retro-pop and psychedelia, like seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, while Annabelle Chairlegs' current catalogue is a fierce, intense rock ‘n' roll ride trembling with spooky undertones.” Excerpt from https://www.annabellechairlegs.com Annabelle Chairlegs: Bandcamp: https://annabellechairlegs.bandcamp.com/merch Instagram: @annabellechairlegs Website: https://www.annabellechairlegs.com Merch: https://www.annabellechairlegs.com/shop-1 The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos
The Twenty Minute VC: Venture Capital | Startup Funding | The Pitch
Kyle Harrison is a General Partner @ Contrary and one of my favorite writers on the venture space with his blog, Investing 101 2.0. Before joining Contrary, Kyle worked in the ranks of some of the biggest and best names in venture, starting with a spell at TCV before moving to Coatue and making his final stop at Index. Across firms, Kyle has led or participated in investments including Ramp, Pave, Anduril, Gitlab, Databricks and Snowflake to name a few. In Today's Episode with Kyle Harrison: 1.) From Film Lover to Technology Investor: How Kyle went from creating a professional services marketplace around film to joining the ranks of TCV and investing in breakout technology companies? What was Kyle's biggest takeaway from TCV? How did it impact his mindset? What was Kyle's biggest lesson from working with the Laffont's at Coatue? How did it change the way he thinks about price and market sizing? Why was Index such a transformational school of venture for Kyle? How did that experience change how he thinks about what it takes to be a great investor? 2.) The Death of So So Venture Firms: Why does Kyle believe many of the "so so" venture firms will die? What does Kyle believe makes a venture firm "so so"? Who is vulnerable then? How does Kyle think the lifespan and "death" of venture firms will change in the next decade? 3.) The Rise of "The Blackstone of Venture Firms": How does Kyle define "the Blackstone of VCs"? Who are they? With increasing fund sizes will we see VC returns denigrate to PE returns? How is the world of family offices changing the venture environment? Will we see more or less money flood into venture over the coming years? Of the incumbents, who has done "The Blackstone" model well? Why? Who has failed? Why? 4.) The Rise of Community in Venture: What does "community" really mean to Kyle? Why does he believe it will play such a prominent role in the way the best invest in the future? How have existing players failed to build, sustain and productize communities? What are the best opportunities for new entrants to create and utilise communities to invest? Items Mentioned in Today's Episode: Kyle's Favourite Book: Reinventing Knowledge: From Alexandria to the Internet

Union Station is a mess. At least that's what news outlets keep saying about the transit hub and fancy downtown hangout. In the last six months, complaints of violence, open drug use, and people sleeping in the public space have become the narrative of Union Station, painting it as a scene of constant chaos. At the beginning of 2022, Mayor Hancock responded by swarming the place with police — as a result, he said that DPD had made 700 arrests since January. The City Cast Denver crew hadn't made a trek down to the shiny train station since before the pandemic, and knew it was time to see for themselves what was going on there. Host Bree Davies and producers Paul Karolyi and Xandra McMahon met up with Denverite reporter Kyle Harris — who has covered issues at Union Station extensively — for a walk around the downtown spot. They wanted to see for themselves what, exactly, was so concerning. Read more of Kyle Harris's original reporting on Union Station for Denverite: We spent 18 hours at Union Station. Here's everything we saw and heard. A swanky Union Station high rise holds clues about how the rich and poor will coexist (or not) downtown Denver police have arrested more than 700 people at Union Station this year — only a third for drug crimes Just a note: Street sweeping starts today! Stochastic Resonance Therapy (SRT) was born in the German city of Frankfurt when Dietmar Schmidtbleicher developed a new training device for Olympic athletes. Since then, the whole-body vibration device he developed has been studied and shown to be effective in the treatment of Parkinson's motor symptoms. While you may have already heard of the benefits of vibration therapy and Parkinson's, chances are you haven't heard of SRT until now. SRT is different from other types of vibration devices. It delivers randomized and non-uniform oscillations and perturbations to the body, whereas all other devices on the market deliver uniform, sinusoidal vibrations. The random nature of SRTvibrations elicits the automatic stretch reflex in the muscles, which leads to postural adjustments being made in the spinal cord and the cerebellum (the part of the brain that automatically adjusts movement patterns). These adjustments keep the head still and the body upright while on the device. Hundreds to thousands of stimuli are delivered to the spinal cord and cerebellum in a matter of minutes. In the literature, SRT has been shown to decrease tremor and rigidity, improve postural control and balance, and lead to better gait patterns in Parkinsonian patients. We chatted about sleep paralysis, Good Good Comedy (the only good thing in Philly, according to him), mayonnaise versus Miracle Whip, his sketch group Darlings, the tourism industry, honky tonks, his Boston origin story, his lady’s-man uncle, food cuckolding, The Flintstones live-action film, and hypothetical sculpture.
