In Driven: The Race to Create the Autonomous Car (Simon & Schuster, 2022), Alex Davies tells the enlightening and significant story of the effort to create driverless cars and the intense competition among tech heavyweights such as Google, Uber, and Tesla to move this technology forward. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have been one of the most hyped technologies of recent years, but early promises that they would quickly become common place have not borne fruit. Alex Davies set forth the twisted paths of this technology's evolution from its genesis to the current moment. The idea began with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which aimed to create a land-based equivalent to the drone, a vehicle that could operate in war zones without risking human lives. DARPA established “Grand Challenges” that enticed future-oriented thinkers including amateurs and students to help drive the technology from fantasy to reality. Carnegie-Mellon University and other universities played a major role. The technology got the attention of Silicon Valley companies like Google and Uber. Next arriving were the major US automakers, GM and Ford, who initiated their programs of their own to commercialize the technology, and Chinese companies also showed an intense interest. As road testing went forward, however, the challenges became far more apparent. The difficulties of traversing diverse terrains under varying weather conditions without a driver came out to be far more daunting than expected. Progress was made but in no way as fast as the developers of the technology hoped. The early enthusiasm of the key players dissipated as they came to realize that AI-assisted driverless transportation faced formidable barriers. This book provides fabulous insights into the key characters in this story and how they struggled with a technology that was not ready for rush-hour driving It is a fast-paced, exciting account of how autonomous technology emerged, the main players, the conflicts between companies, and state of the technology today. The book provides the reader with a genuine feel for how real happens. The writing is fantastic because of the emphasis on that details that come from the many conversations that Davies had with people at the center of the story. Tímea Reicher is an Executive MBA graduate of the WU Executive Academy of the Vienna University of Economics and Business and University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management (USA). We talk about her career and how learning has always been a key part of her personal and professional development. Tímea has been with SLOVNAFT, part of the MOL group of companies, for over 17 years and in the podcast she describes the various roles she has undertaken in that time. Again, Tímea emphasises the role learning has played in her career advancement, leading to her now being responsible for the company's ever-expanding retail division. Over the past 7 years under her management, the Retail Division has tripled the Petrol chain business's EBITDA to €87 Million. SLOVNAFT Group is an integrated refinery-petrochemical group and Tímea has responsibility for the overall retail operations of the company in Slovakia. The most powerful company is SLOVNAFT, a.s. dealing mainly with refining in one of the most complex European refineries and with the wholesale, logistics and retail sale of motor fuels and non-fuel products. Other members of the Group are SLOVNAFT MONTÁŽE A OPRAVY a.s., SLOVNAFT TRANS a.s., VÚRUP, a.s., CM European Power Slovakia, s.r.o. and other companies. SLOVNAFT Group is one of the biggest investors in Slovakia. Its cumulative capital expenditure has amounted to nearly EUR 2 billion, on average, approx. EUR 120 million per year since the mid-1990's. SLOVNAFT operates the largest network of petrol/diesel filling stations in Slovakia. The company is a leader in Slovakia in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and corporate philanthropy, and the company significantly supports sport, culture, education, youth and the revitalizing of the environment. Through their visionary mindset, Mol Group Retail and local countries have created a concept of the Fresh Corner Convenience store format which, apart from 272 Service Stations in Slovakia, is now operating in 9 countries throughout the Central and East European (CEE) region. One of the key strategic directions besides maintaining SLOVNAFT's strong position in fuel retailing, has been to transform the retail network into multi-purpose service stations and to shift from product-driven, to customer-driven operations. Therefore Tímea and her team introduced the aforementioned successful new retail concept Fresh Corner, SLOVNAFT's convenience brand encompassing top quality coffee, fresh food and everyday groceries and Fresh Corner restaurants. Tímea also talks about her experiences of travelling abroad for work and study and the benefits these can bring. We discuss language learning, including the importance of learning English for international communications and the persistent challenges for women in leadership positions, including her innovative solution to childcare issues! The general aim of the podcast series is to be entertaining for all listeners, as well as being educational, assisting upper-intermediate and advanced level English language students with additional listening practice. In this episode of Mutuality Matters (Intersectionality), Angela sits down with Rev. Dr. Christy Woodbury-Moore, assistant professor of spiritual formation at Memphis Theological University. Rev. Dr. Woodbury-Moore shares her research, as well as her own experiences regarding the ways in which the personal narratives of women, when embraced and expressed, empower them toward wholeness. It is Rev. Dr. Woodbury-Moore's assertion that this drive towards wholeness allows women to then be vehicles of justice and liberation for their communities. Bio: Rev. Dr. Christy S. Woodbury-Moore is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. She attended Tuskegee University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. She also holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota-Carlson School of Management. Rev. She currently serves as the assistant professor of spiritual formation and the director of supervised ministry at Memphis Theological Seminary. Dr. Woodbury-Moore has a heart for African American women and the black community. Her dissertation, titled, “Give Me My Stuff: In Defense of Black Womanhood,” is a womanist exploration of the ways black women's voices and experiences have been minimized in an effort to empower them to see the value in their own stories. She also serves on the board of Equity for Women in the Church, an ecumenical organization advocating for the representation of women's key leadership roles in the church.
A key statewide office on the ballot this fall is Attorney General, a job Minnesota Democrats have held since the early 1970s. Republicans believe they have a real chance to flip the office, but who will be their candidate? Last month at their state convention, the GOP endorsed political newcomer Jim Schultz. But before he can focus his campaign on unseating DFL incumbent Keith Ellison, he must deal with a primary challenge from the party's 2018 candidate Doug Wardlow. This week, Politics Friday host Mike Mulcahy is joined by Minnesota GOP Attorney General hopefuls Jim Schultz and Doug Wardlow. We'll hear why each candidate thinks they are best for the job, how they plan to reverse the statewide losing streak for Republicans and why they believe they are most qualified to take on Ellison. We'll learn why primary challenger Doug Wardlow is staying in the race despite his pledge to abide by the party's endorsement. Mike talked with DFL Attorney General Keith Ellison, who is running for re-election, back in March. Plus, industry experts expect gas prices to stay high for a while. University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management professor Akshay Rao joins the show to discuss why prices went up, if they will continue to rise and how politics intersect with gas prices. Favorite restaurants in Minnesota have already shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Retail spending across the country has been slashed. Now shops are reopening in Minnesota, with eateries to follow. What will it be like? Gov. Tim Walz allowed Minnesota’s stay-at-home order to expire because the state now has enough resources to handle the looming virus peak. Shops will be allowed to reopen with restrictions. Restaurants have been open for takeout only but could reopen to dine-in customers — also with restrictions — on June 1. MPR News host Angela Davis is joined by two experts on the restaurant and retail industries to talk about what’s next for customers and business owners. Guests: Liz Rammer is the president and CEO of Hospitality Minnesota, a business association for lodging, restaurants, resorts and campgrounds. George John is the marketing chair and a professor at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. Use the audio player above to listen to the program. Today’s FlashBack Friday episode was originally published on October 13, 2010 Jason talks with Harvey Mackay author of the New York Times #1 bestsellers Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive and Beware the Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt. Both books are among the top 15 inspirational business books of all time, according to the New York Times. In total, Harvey’s books have sold 10 million copies worldwide, been translated into 37 languages and sold in 80 countries. Harvey is a nationally syndicated columnist for United Feature Syndicate, whose weekly articles appear in 52 newspapers around the country, including the Chicago Sun Times, Rocky Mountain News, Orange County Register, Minneapolis Star Tribune and Arizona Republic. He also is one of America’s most popular and entertaining business speakers. Toastmasters International named him one of the top five speakers in the world. At age 26, he purchased a small, failing envelope company in 1959 which has grown to a $100 million business employing over 600 people. MackayMitchell Envelope Company is one of the nation’s major envelope manufacturers, producing 25 million envelopes a day. As chairman, Harvey’s philosophy is engrained in the company, beginning with its motto: Do what you love, love what you do and deliver more than you promise. Harvey is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Executive Program. He is an avid runner and marathoner, and former #1 ranked tennis player in Minnesota. He currently sits on the board of the Minnesota Orchestra and is a former director on Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute and the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. He has been a guest lecturer at various universities and business schools, including Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, Cornell, Wharton and Penn State. Central to Harvey’s business, and to his books, is the ability to stay competitive in the often cut-throat world of business, to ‘swim with the sharks’, without sacrificing one’s personal integrity or doing it at the expense of other people. He does this by focusing on building strong relationships with both customers and employees. In fact, Harvey is a master of networking. He believes most people make the mistake of only turning to their network when they need it; for example, when they’re looking for a new job. Harvey says that networking is a lifelong practice that provides you with new knowledge and experiences, job security, expanded financial reach, and the strength of the group. The secret to maintaining a great network is, above all, knowing the value of the personal touch. In spite of his hectic schedule, Harvey still finds plenty of time for family and fun. He’s an avid golfer (11.4 handicap) and recently won the Super Senior Men’s Championship at his home club in Scottsdale! He and his wife, Carol Ann, have been married over 45 years, and enjoy spending time with their nine grandchildren. They are avid travelers, taking an annual trip to Italy, and planning upcoming tours of China and Africa. Joe Nayquonabe Joe Nayquonabe is the CEO of Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures. This company is the economic arm of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. Joe rocketed to this position at a young age after serving as the VP of Marketing for the tribe's casino at the age of 27. Joe Nayquonabe, CEO Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures Joe Nayquonabe's story is a great story of how his tribe has consisntently encouraged educational opportunities, and also for those that receive an education to come back home. Once back, the tribe fosters and creates opportunities for these individuals to grow into professional careers. Joe has certainly capitalized upon those opportunities. And his work has been recognized nationally. Earlier this year he received the CEO of the Year award from the Native American Finance Officers Association. Joe Nayquonabe has some ambitious goals-he wants revenue from the company to match the revenue earned through gaming. He is thinking ahead about how can the tribe diversify its holdings to continue to thrive. The last item I will highlight is Joe's recognition that the work he does for Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures has a big impact in the community beyond providing revenue to the tribe. Joe recognizes that a stronger economy in his community will impact the social measures of the community, too. I think it is important for tribes and tribal organizations to connect to a greater degree the role that building strong economies has on health, housing, education, etc. and that those issues also impact the ability to grow a strong economy. ### Subscribe to the Podcast iTunes-Please also rate and review the podcast with honest feedback! It tastes good, maybe I should leave it at that :).] Joe watches a lot of HBO
