In this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with my friend Andrew Hoffman, professor at the University of Michigan and author of 19 books, to talk about his latest, Business School and the Noble Purpose of the Market. Andy's journey is remarkable, from his early days as a carpenter to becoming one of the most respected voices calling for a rethinking of social benefit enterprises and business education. We dug into why today's business schools must evolve beyond outdated shareholder-first models and start preparing leaders to take on the big challenges of our time—climate change, inequality, and rebuilding trust in institutions. Andy makes a compelling case for how markets, when properly guided, can serve a noble purpose. He also shares a vision for how universities, government, and business can better align to drive meaningful change. If you're part of a regional ecosystem, a university, or simply someone working to make your corner of the nation work better for more people, Andy's insights offer both a critique and a clear path forward. I hope this conversation sparks ideas—and more importantly, action—in your own work.AMCC's podcast is made possible in part by the expertise of Mike McAllen, founder of Podcasting4Associations. What if the secret to extraordinary sales success wasn't pressure—but purpose? Lisa McLeod believes the best salespeople aren't chasing quotas. They're chasing impact. Lisa is a bestselling author of "Selling with Noble Purpose", keynote speaker, and creator of the Noble Purpose business philosophy. Her work has reached over 2 million people on LinkedIn Learning and been featured in Harvard Business Review. In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, we dive deep into the heart of what drives real, sustainable sales success—and how organizations can embrace the purpose to outperform the market by 350%. We talk about the surprising results of Lisa's research into top-performing sales teams. Spoiler alert: the best sellers aren't ruthless closers—they're purpose-driven professionals who genuinely care about making a difference. Lisa shares how she fused two sides of her life—sales and soul—to build a thriving thought leadership business that helps global brands like Hilton and ThyssenKrupp transform their culture from the inside out. Lisa also opens up about the business side of thought leadership. She discusses the challenges of scaling ideas across massive organizations and why turning insight into action requires more than just great content—it requires packaging, structure, and a path for others to teach it. If you're a thought leader wrestling with how to turn your big ideas into business results—or if you're trying to bring more meaning into your work—this conversation is for you. Three Key Takeaways: • Purpose-driven sales outperform — Salespeople who focus on improving customers' lives consistently outperform their peers, proving that noble purpose is a strategic advantage, not just a feel-good concept. • Sales has an image problem — The profession is too often defined by its worst examples, but true sales success comes from empathy, trust, and a desire to serve—especially in B2B environments. • Thought leaders must sell their ideas — To create impact, you must connect your insights to the client's pain points and speak their language; selling isn't about being pushy, it's about being relevant and solving real problems. If today's conversation on purpose-driven sales sparked something for you, you won't want to miss our episode with Mike Latch and Gregg Murphy, Scaling Sales, Not Sacrificing Quality – The AI-Driven Secret to Billion-Dollar Growth. While Lisa McLeod explores the human side of sales—leading with empathy and purpose—Mike and Gregg dive into how organizations can scale that impact without losing what makes it effective. Together, these episodes paint a powerful picture of what modern sales success looks like: purpose at the core, with systems that support it at scale. It is a special day as we welcome a true industry icon to the podcast! Today, we are thrilled to have Frank Passanante, Global Head of Sales at Hilton, joining us for a conversation that has been a long time in the making. Eric has crossed paths with Frank through the MPI Foundation and has been looking forward to having him on the show to share his insights.  In this episode, Frank discusses his career, the art of sales, and the enduring strength of the Hilton brand. A Passion for Hospitality from a Young Age Frank's journey into the hospitality industry began in his early teens. While on a family vacation at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, he discovered a book by Conrad Hilton, Be My Guest, which ignited his passion for the hotel business. From that moment, he began working various jobs in hotels and restaurants before specializing in sales. He joined Hilton right after university and has remained in the industry ever since. Sales as a Noble Profession Frank believes sales is a noble profession centered on solving customer problems and providing value. He feels that true sales success comes from genuinely caring about customers and helping them find the right solutions. Frank integrates Lisa McLeod's Philosophy of Selling with Noble Purpose into his sales approach, focusing on customer impact rather than revenue alone. His mindset aligns with Hilton's founding purpose—spreading the light and warmth of hospitality. Building a Strong Sales Culture Recruiting the right people is essential to maintaining a strong company culture. Frank refers to The Ideal Team Player by Patrick Lencioni, which identifies three key qualities for success: humility, which prioritizes teamwork and continuous learning; hunger, which drives ambition and goal-setting; and emotional intelligence, which ensures strong interpersonal skills. At Hilton, hiring, training, and performance management are structured around those virtues to create a high-performing, customer-focused sales team. Adapting to Changing Buyer Behavior The landscape of meeting and event services has evolved in the post-COVID era. Modern buyers expect a seamless blend of self-service digital tools and personalized support for more complex needs. So, they developed a three-channel sales strategy at Hilton: digital self-service options that empower customers to research and book independently, direct sales for high-touch transactions requiring expert guidance, and voice-assisted support for critical moments in the buying process. Companies that fail to adapt to these shifting expectations risk missing valuable opportunities in today's rapidly evolving market. AI and Continuous Learning AI and automation are reshaping the industry, so Frank is committed to future-proofing the Hilton sales teams. The company promotes an always-learning mindset and prioritizes a coaching culture. Combining continuous learning with a strong coaching environment ensures that the Hilton sales professionals remain effective and adaptable. Building a Coaching Culture Frank emphasizes the power of coaching in leadership and business success. He stresses the importance of being coachable, asking the right questions, and seeking feedback to progress quickly. His organization holds monthly coaching sessions for leaders, focusing on practicing real-life coaching conversations to build communication skills. The Art of Difficult Conversations Having tough conversations is easier said than done. As a former SaaS CEO, Frank found that employees initially hesitated to voice their concerns. However, by welcoming constructive criticism and encouraging dialogue, he built a culture where feedback became a strength rather than something to fear. Continuous Learning & Expanding Perspectives Frank stays ahead by reading business publications, white papers, and research from Forrester and Gartner rather than constantly chasing new frameworks. He values learning from industries outside his own, believing that cross-industry insights spark fresh ideas. Year of the Travel Maximizer Hilton has identified 2025 as the Year of the Travel Maximizer. Their recent Meetings Maximizer report highlights trends like extreme preparedness, where attendees demand detailed agendas and networking guidance. Hilton developed resources to meet these evolving needs, including the World's Most Welcoming Events playbook, to help planners create more engaging experiences. Looking Ahead Frank is excited about Hilton's rapid expansion, with over 800 new hotels added in 2024 and 500,000 rooms in the pipeline. Next year, they will celebrate significant openings, including the iconic Waldorf Astoria New York and new Waldorf locations in Sydney and Tokyo.  Bio: Frank Passanante Senior Vice President, Global Head of Sales and HRCC, Hilton Frank Passanante sets the B2B strategy for Hilton through all selling channels. He's passionate about forging strong customer partnerships that drive mutual success, building winning sales teams through intentionally developing a coaching culture, and quickly adapting strategies to meet the continually evolving nature of B2B sales. In his current role as Senior Vice President, Global Head of Sales, and HRCC, Frank collaborates closely with commercial leaders worldwide on coordinated global B2B strategies. He takes great pride in his team of purpose-led sales professionals, who consistently develop meaningful customer relationships and consult on solutions. He describes his team as caring, committed to their clients' outcomes, and striving to be the best in the business.  Frank built and refined his hospitality sales and marketing expertise over three decades, with the vast majority of those years devoted to Hilton in various on-property, regional, and corporate roles. Actively engaged in industry organizations across all travel segments, he has served on the Professional Convention Management Association Board of Directors, the U.S. Travel Association Meetings Mean Business Coalition, and the Events Industry Council APEX Business Recovery Task Force. Currently, he is engaged with the US Travel Association Group Travel Network and the GBTA Allied Leadership Committee. The Spirit of Work: Using the Virtues Sequence for Solving Workplace Problems

Culture and Leadership Connections Podcast

Using the Virtues Sequence for Solving Workplace ProblemsAre you facing a problem that seems unsolvable? The answer might lie in the "virtues sequence," a concept my colleague and I uncovered while researching sacred writings across world religions. We discovered a common pattern that could help resolve workplace challenges, consistently following the same path of: love, truth, justice, unity, peace, and abundance.Example One: A fabrication plant faced repeated customer complaints about design mistakes due to miscommunication and a lack of respect between departments. The designers and fabricators were separated by several departments, and when fabricators reported issues, they were often ignored by the designers who felt superior. This created distrust and poor relationships, rendering feedback workflows ineffective. The solution was to bring designers, fabricators, and customers together to develop relationship. Regular meetings led to unity and smoother operations, which in turn addressed customer concerns. Example Two: The virtues sequence can enhance workplace dynamics by tackling core issues. A manager dealing with personal problems might unknowingly create a toxic environment, driven by unresolved struggles. Addressing this starts with acknowledging the truth of personal issues, and their impact on others leading to love and justice. Example Three:The final example involves managers promoting up from a marginalized employee group. When organizations do not genuinely believe in the competence of the racialized individuals they unconsciously undermine them, which reveals hidden discriminatory attitudes. The lack of authenticity stems from an absence of truth and love, leading to injustice. Such problems occur because people often do not feel that their needs for love, appreciation, and acknowledgment are met in their own lives. How to Increase Ability to Apply the Virtues Sequence with Authenticity:Serve the Customer: When you truly serve the customer, you reconnect with the noble purpose that your job is intended to fulfill. This strategy, derived from Lisa Earl MacLeod's book, Selling with Noble Purpose has many examples of how connecting to service, inspires workplaces to make amazing progress and individuals to find purpose and meaning in their lives. Remember Your Family Legacy: By reflecting on your family legacy, you can identify an inspirational example that has shaped your best self. While acknowledging that your family legacy wasn't perfect, you can still be inspired by the virtues your family tree has been able to demonstrate over time. This gives a sense of purpose and helps you get back on the virtues path.Increase your Empathy through discomfort: People may lack empathy because they haven't experienced it themselves. One of my facilitator colleagues introduced an exercise to increase empathy by trying to teach workshop participants 10 minutes of basic introductory knowledge in Punjabi. Within less than five minutes, participants were angry and in tears. Pausing the exercise, my colleague explained that this was how their newcomer workers felt all day, every day, when they didn't speak English as a first language. This powerful experience helped leaders understand their employees' struggles and realign with empathy and increased patience. In summary, the virtues sequence, can be used as a diagnostic tool for a workplace issues, and in your personal life to find virtues solutions. Remember the sequence: Love - Truth - Justice - Unity - Peace - Abundance.Happy practicing and don't forget to pick up my book, The Spirit of Work: Timeless Wisdom, Current Realities!Support the show

Empathetic marketing is having a moment. But really, this trend has been a long time coming. Buyers today are savvy, everything is available online, and they have no patience for brands that don't understand them or their needs. My guest today, Tim Leon, coined the term Return on Empathy and talks about all that companies gain when they engage in more empathetic marketing tactics. We discuss what empathy marketing means, why marketers should embrace it, and how it applies equality to B2B as well as B2C brands. We share data that shows why buyers are choosing empathetic brands, and why this is not just a trend, but a transformative moment in how we market and sell. And finally, we share actionable strategies to inject more empathy into your marketing - not least of which is understanding where marketing's limitations end and your culture, leadership, and policies need to also become part of the effort. Now more than ever, the companies that portray ads that promote well-being and comfort are the companies that people want to do business with. They don't want a hard sell, they want to feel good about the brands they're working with. You have to sell to people, whether you're working B2B or B2C. In this episode of 'Coach2Scale, host Matt interviews Lisa McLeod, an acclaimed author and founder of McLeod & More Inc. Known for her work on integrating purpose into sales strategies. Lisa discusses the myth that top salespeople are solely motivated by money. She emphasizes that high performers are driven by a desire to improve the lives of their customers. The conversation delves into distinguishing between reactive and assertive sales approaches, the concept of 'noble purpose,' and how organizations can align their goals with customer impact to drive better results.  Takeaways: Understand the Core Purpose: Define your company's noble purpose by answering three key questions: How do you make a difference? How do you do it differently? And on your best day, what do you love about your job? This can help you articulate the impact your business has on your customers, motivating your teams and aligning their efforts with a clear, meaningful goal.Prioritize Customer Impact Over Numbers: Recognize that financial metrics are lagging indicators of success. Instead of focusing solely on closing deals and hitting targets, encourage your team to continuously ask, "How will this customer be different as a result of doing business with us?" This mindset fosters deeper customer relationships and leads to sustainable growth.Share Customer Success Stories: Regularly share stories within your organization about how your products or services have positively impacted your customers. This not only boosts team morale but also reinforces the noble purpose behind your work. These stories can serve as powerful tools in sales pitches and align your team's efforts.Engage the Movable Middle: Focus on the middle tier of performers in your organization. These individuals have the potential to drive massive changes in performance. By investing in coaching and development for this group, you can elevate overall team success, rather than just rewarding the top performers.Ask the Game-Changing Question: During every sales interaction or strategic planning session, ask yourself and your team, "How will this customer be different as a result of doing business with us?" This question ensures that your efforts are always customer-centric and aligned with delivering real value.Create a Motivating Hiring Narrative: When bringing new hires on board, don't just talk about job roles and financial compensation. Share the noble purpose of your organization and illustrate how new employees will contribute to making a difference. This attracts individuals who are motivated by meaning and purpose, not just money.Lead with Stories and Metrics: Balance your focus on metrics with compelling stories that illustrate your company's impact. This combined approach ensures that your team understands the importance of both financial performance and customer satisfaction. Use concrete examples to inspire and motivate your team consistently.Quote of the Show:“I want everyone to be able to show up knowing my company's work makes a difference and I make a difference.” Links:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisaearlemcleod/ Website: http://www.mcleodandmore.com/ Ways to Tune In:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Yb1wPzUxyrfR0Dx35ym1A Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/coach2scale-how-modern-leaders-build-a-coaching-culture/id1699901434 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy50cmFuc2lzdG9yLmZtL2NvYWNoMnNjYWxlLWhvdy1tb2Rlcm4tbGVhZGVycy1idWlsZC1hLWNvYWNoaW5nLWN1bHR1cmU Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fd188af6-7c17-4b2e-a0b2-196ecd6fdf77 Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/coach2scale-how-modern-leaders-5419703 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Coach2Scale CoachEm™ is the first Coaching Execution Platform that integrates deep learning technology to proactively analyze patterns, highlight the "why" behind the data with root causes, and identify the actions that will ultimately improve business results going forward.  These practical coaching recommendations for managers will help their teams drive more deals, bigger deals, faster deals and loyal customers. In this cross-over episode, we're sharing an episode from Mental Selling. This show is produced by Sweet Fish Media. Sales is one of the only professions where we allow it to be defined by the people who do it badly. Top salespeople are ones who earnestly want to improve life for their customers. When purpose driven sales becomes part of the culture and bigger than the transaction- and your ‘true north' is improving life for customers- you'll actually wind up making more money. Successful salespeople want to know that what they're doing counts for something- that their work matters. If what you are selling is being bought by customers, you're improving their lives. Hear our conversation with Lisa Earle McLeod, Founder at McLeod & More, Inc. and author of the bestseller Selling with Noble Purpose. We discuss: 3 questions to ask that every salesperson should be able to answer The real reasons salespeople leave their jobs How the noble seller differs from the transactional seller The difference between customer-centricity and purpose-driven sales Overcoming the negative external perceptions of sales with confidence- and how your customers will feel it The “it” that customers really want you to get to… What mistaking profit for their purpose signals to your salespeople and employees Why sales numbers are a lagging indicator and sales leaders need to coach to mindsets vs. outcomes Why the people that have bought from you before are the key to understanding how your products make a difference Sales managers as the “front-line belief builders” Sponsors: If you're hiring, you need Indeed. What is Noble Purpose? An organization's Noble Purpose explains why it exists. It is a clear and concise statement of what the organization does to improve the lives of its customers.Noble Purpose is at the foundation of every strategy and is the prime consideration of every decision made at work. Why is having a Noble Purpose for your organization important?Having a Noble Purpose is just the right thing to do.A well-animated Noble Purpose enables people in the organization to answer “Yes or No” in an aligned way.Having a Noble Purpose attracts and retains talent, especially from the younger generations.Organizations with a well-animated Noble Purpose are more successful and more profitable. They outperform organizations that lack Noble Purpose by 400%.How do you establish and animate a Noble Purpose?Senior Leaders Develop a working draft of the organization's Noble Purpose, and if needed, the organization's Vision and Principles, to complete the PVV – the Purpose, Vision, and Values.Senior Leaders socialize the working draft of the Noble Purpose by sharing it with small groups across the company, getting feedback, modifying as appropriate, and ultimately publishing the organization's official Noble Purpose. In Lean terms this is known as Nemawashi.Under the direction of Senior Leaders, the organization fully animates the PVV, by including it in the new hire orientation, in leadership training, in decision-making processes, in performance management systems, in communication campaigns, and in many other ways.Key ToolsWrite us at info@tplshow.org for a free guide on how to establish and animate a Noble Purpose in your organization. The Five Truths of Improvement

The TPL Show

IntroductionThis is a method for animating Avanulo's Third Belief Construct, which is that all improvement issues are, at their core, people issues.Belief constructs are important because culture is the greatest competitive advantage you can leverage in any organization, and we use the Belief Constructs to design and build an intentional culture. Some find this concept difficult to accept because they do not want to blame problems on specific people. So, to avoid blame, they express the cause in ways that do not link directly to people. This is because we are all taught that blame is toxic in a culture, but the reverse is true. In a healthy culture, accountability is used to make improvements in positive ways.Driving cause analysis to the lowest level of human decision or action provides a huge advantage in problem solving because it allows us fix problems much more effectively and permanently.Fixing things for good the first time allows us to spend more time preventing problems instead of having to correct them later. An effective, healthy culture is huge competitive advantage that revs up results. What are the Five Truths of Improvement?Everything is a process – everything.Every process delivers exactly what it was designed to deliver – not what it was intended to deliver. So, in this way, every process is achieving “its design.”Every process is the way it is because those with authority over it allow it to persist, either by intent, by acquiescence, or by a lack of awareness or concern. There are usually two reasons in play – the reason given (the Stated Reason) and the real reason (The Root Cause). The reason given reflects our hopes and fears. The real reason is the truth that is made clear by the facts.Find a way to work on the real reason, with the support of those who have authority over the process, and without diminishing those who give other reasons, and you will make significant and lasting improvement. Why are the Five Truths of Improvement Important? The Five Truths help you to act upon Belief Construct Three – that every improvement challenge, is, at its core, is a people issue.Together, they act as a force magnifier that revs up your continuous improvement process. How do you apply the Five Truths of Improvement?Teach everyone in your organization about the value of culture and activate the “miracle machine.” Teach them that you can improve results by improving your culture, and that you can use the Belief Constructs to help you do it. Also teach them that at the heart of every improvement challenge is a people issue.Using work related examples, teach and animate the Five Truths of Improvement. Make them a center point of your continuous improvement message. Use the Five Truths of Improvement to assess your improvement method, to make sure that it is addressing all Five Truths, or simply use the Five Truths as an approach to continuous improvement.Key ToolsWrite us at info@tplshow.org for a free guide on how to establish and animate a Noble Purpose in your organization. What does it take to be successful in sales for the IT industry? Tim Arpin, Regional Sales Manager for NY/NJ at Service Express, a data center maintenance company, has a candid conversation with Phil and Nabeel about the world of sales — the good and the bad — and what he loves about providing value through consultative sales for the data center industry. Arpin always had a natural proclivity for sales. While in his teens he started selling golf equipment in a sporting goods store. He then worked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car as a sales manager and went on to do sales and business development for several firms. A former manager from Enterprise invited Arpin to join him at Service Express as a senior account manager.  He soon realized how attractive the IT industry was: “IT sales now is like pharmaceutical sales in the eighties and nineties…there's a lot of success to be had, a lot of growth in the industry…a lot of IT spend, with lots of companies looking for salespeople.”  Arpin became conversant with the technical aspects of the industry through a combination of online research, on-the-job training, and developing relationships with clients and vendors. Arpin speaks with pride about his work helping to support his company and their customers. He shares his commitment to sales as a profession — how he is in it not just for financial rewards, but also to solve problems, find value, and build relationships.  He references the book “Selling with Noble Purpose: How to Drive Revenue and Do Work That Makes You Proud” by Lisa Earle McCleod which emphasizes the importance of finding your reason, the “why” behind your selling, and believing that what you're selling is providing value and having impact. “The consultative process of sales is an art form…the need to become a high-level consultative seller has forced me to become a better salesperson — a better listener, a better relationship builder, a better problem solver.” In terms of advice, Arpin highlights the importance of staying current and actively pursuing knowledge. He also recommends attending industry events where one can make or deepen relationships with vendors, colleagues, and end users. “AFCOM has by far been the most beneficial for me…I get to walk through the latest data and learn…there's always guest speakers and different companies talking about their products…that stuff's invaluable.” He shares the following insight: “The biggest thing that helped me honestly, was just conversations with end users when I didn't know something. Being open to admitting that and asking them to explain it to me, because I wanted to learn.” Tim Arpin is the Regional Sales Manager for the New York/New Jersey Market for Service Express, a third-party Data Center Maintenance Provider. Arpin has been with Service Express for over four years and has fifteen years of sales experience starting with a job selling golf equipment at a local Sports Authority store while he was in high school. Arpin manages a team of eight sellers and lives in North Jersey. He has a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration/Marketing from Eastern Connecticut State University.
