We all want to be happy – but maybe not too happy. This episode begins by explaining how too much happiness can be a problem and how a little unhappiness can be a very good thing. https://www.businessinsider.com/on-a-scale-of-1-to-10-how-happy-should-you-aspire-to-be-2012-5 One of the most amazing things about your smartphone is the camera. And you likely haven't taken the time to really understand all the amazing things it can do. Yes, it takes pictures and videos but it does so much more. Here to explain some of the things you never knew your smartphone camera can do is Scott Kelby. Scott is a is a photographer, photography teacher and author of The iPhone Photography Book (https://amzn.to/3vkgs3l). If you own a smartphone – iPhone or otherwise, you will really enjoy hearing what Scott has to say. Fasting has gotten a lot of attention lately. It has been touted as a treatment for many illnesses and ailments as well as a great way to lose weight. But is it all it is cracked up to be? After all, humans need to eat. So what is the science behind this idea of withholding food for long periods of time? Is it safe? Does it really have medical benefits? Joining me with a look at what fasting does and doesn't do is journalist Steve Hendricks author of the book The Oldest Cure in the World: Adventures in the Art and Science of Fasting (https://amzn.to/3I38287). Hard to imagine anyone who doesn't enjoy listening to music. Good thing too, because listening to music may help prevent a cold or the flu or other illnesses. Supplements. They are more valuable now than ever because of the degraded nutrition in our food products. Almost every one has taken a vitamin pill, powder, or potion. How do you know it has what the label says? How do you know it doesn't have toxic contaminants & heavy metals? I will break down numerous studies that revealed horrible & even shocking results! Most have heard of an athlete that didn't pass a drug test because of the strict guidelines. Supplements with drugs in them have caused some of these situations. SERIOUSLY! Disqualifying an innocent athlete that had no idea. So how in the world do we find the quality products on the market? Well, I plan on making this a simple guide. To get what you pay for without toxins or drugs. Thanks for listening! Please rate, review, and share. Also look below for the link to support my efforts with the show for as low as $1 a month! In this episode, I get SUPER EMOTIONAL on all levels about the weight loss advice some of these doctors are giving out.  I have to come clean here and I MUST get this out there. I am shocked at the number of DOCTORS that prescribe a diet plan to their patients that is VERY UNHEALTHY, in fact, it kind of sort of encouraged disordered eating and can lead to eating disorders.  It actually makes me sad that this is even happening…and this story I am about to share, with permission from a client, was “advice” from a fricking WEIGHT LOSS CLINIC!! It breaks my heart how many women have come to me with VERY similar stories. We TRUST these doctors to have HEALTH in their best interest but I'm not seeing it with the strategies they are using to “help” their patients lose weight. It's just another quick fix packaged differently ( I SAID WHAT I SAID). Don't fall for it ladies.  You'll have to excuse me because I kind of went off in this podcast and got a LITTLE emotional…so you know that means I was dropping F-Bombs left and right.  PLEASE< I beg of you, before you take the advice on weight loss from your doctor, listen to this podcast and do some research before you make any decision. While you may see some weight loss with these programs, it does NOT in one way promote TRUE health because it can lead to MANY unhealthy habits along the way.  Always ASK questions, ALWAYS know what you're taking and ALWAYS, ALWAYS listen to your body.  These are my clients exact words and it broke my heart reading it.  “I am your poster child Melanie. I have issues with Everything. I have done all the things you speak of. Your talks resonate to my soul. I will share how I fell into another hole just last year. Doc refers me to a weight loss center. I'm obese. (Doc supervised, good thing right) Medicine, not one but two (not a big med taker)to help appetite and metabolism, bmi check. 1000-1200 calories a day. Intermittent fasting. Carb limit.  I was diligently lifting 3x a week and walking on alternate days. I was losing a pound a week. I did lose 25 lbs in about 5 1/2 months. When I questioned 1000 calories not being enough. They said it was ok. I said. The amount I'm eating and my exercise should be more a week. I don't think I'm eating enough. No they said you, in essence, have abused your body for so long your metabolism isn't efficient. It will improve but they don't know when it will kick in. Here take another pill, or an injectable. Didn't do it.  The aha moment is after 5 months, they did another bmi again. I had only lost 4 pounds of fat. I was like WHAT? What did I lose then? Water, muscle. Muscle which I have been trying so hard to attain to help me. After I stopped, 20 lbs came flooding right back on. I struggle because I've always failed. Never learned my lesson. Until Now!! 60 years old. Have I caused so much damage that weight loss isn't attainable? My body won't do what it needs to work efficiently anymore. Lack of knowledge and a Lifetime of abuse…. Can I ever make up for that? I am making better decisions, reading labels. Doing your class. Just wanted to share. I feel defeat and embarrassment.” ******************************** Let's connect:   Book a FREE Weight Loss Breakthrough call @http://bit.ly/2E48dOh   Join Our FREE FB Support Group @https://www.facebook.com/groups/574339769435340   *************************** FREE STUFF!!    Get your FREE copy of the 7 Secrets the Diet Industry is Hiding From You @ https://bit.ly/2ZXn6QF Get your FREE copy of The Metabolism Cheat Sheet @https://bit.ly/3if0tgO   **************************   FOLLOW ME:   Be sure to subscribe to my Podcast on iTunes @ Create Your Balance    Follow Me on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/melanie.sobocinski   Check out my website @ https://www.melaniesobo.com/    See behind the scenes on Instagram @ https://www.instagram.com/melanie2875/?hl=en    Check out my Pins @  https://www.pinterest.com/MSobocinskiFit/pins/

Welcome to Episode 95 of Building My Legacy. In this podcast we talk with mindset and wellness coach Megan Swan about the many aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Megan helps us explore the various components of health — what promotes health and what takes away from it. I believe that people want to be healthy; they just don’t know how to begin. As you move through your career and build your legacy, have you put off your own well-being? If so, you’ll appreciate what Megan has to say about topics like “bio individuality,” that is, the understanding that there’s no one perfect diet for every single person.Megan’s approach — which she calls “sustainable integrative wellness” — promotes slow, gradual changes over time so that healthy habits become easily integrated into your lifestyle. It’s a good lesson for all of us — young and old — and essential if you want to avoid health problems that can hold you back from building your legacy. So if you want to know:– How processed foods may be weighing down your energy– Why your shopping focus should be outside the supermarket– One easy trick for reading food labels more efficiently– The five aspects of a healthy nutritional lifestyle– How an everyday task like washing the dishes can be a mindful practice– What’s behind detoxification About Megan SwanAs a first-time mother, Megan Swan felt exhausted, overwhelmed and impatient. After working with a health coach, she discovered the negative effects of the standard American diet on our health and well-being. She eliminated processed foods, refined sugar and gluten from her diet and found new levels of energy. She also became a wellness and mindset coach, specializing in detoxification, plant-based living, mindful practices and stress management. Did you that the average number of coffee that a person drinks in a day is 3 cups ? Not to mention the size of cup differs( from medium sized to mugs). In so many countries like Ethiopia, coffee is considered as a polite gesture to guests and show hospitality but at the end of the day whether the motive is for that reason or not, coffee still has a negative effect on the body and mind. I understand it's not easy but trying new things everyday to replace coffee helps alot. Remember that your bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit.Check out this episode to find out more about how caffeine affects your body and what to replace it with. In episode 36 of the Anti-Aging Lifestyle I do a deep dive on coconut and it’s many forms. I go over the pros and cons of coconut oil, coconut milk, and whole coconut flakes. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a 5-star review for me on Apple Podcasts or follow me on your favorite podcast listening platform. Spotify, Pandora, Overcast, Stitcher… the list of popular platforms continues to grow. They all really help me grow the show and spread my message! I appreciate you! Some highlights from the episode:Background: The rise, fall, and return of coconut products. The place of coconuts and coconut trees in our culture.Nutrition: High in fat, moderate in carbs and protein. Primarily saturated fat. But do coconuts really have high amounts of MCTs? Does raising your HDL levels really benefit you?Pros:Antioxidants and Fiber: Coconuts are packed with several antioxidants to protect from free radical damage, and is high in insoluble fiber.Blood Sugar: Coconuts are beneficial for stable blood sugar levels, due to its high fat, high fiber, and high arginine content.Immune System: Coconuts may give you an immune boost with the combination of manganese and antioxidants.Coconut Water: Can be used as an IV in emergency situations. High in potassium, low in sodium, but no better than water in terms of hydration benefits.Other Uses:Skin Protection: Coconut oil provides a natural SPF of 5-7, and helps soothe skin rashes and inflammation. No Mosquitos: Coconut oil has been shown to be an effective natural mosquito repellant.Deodorant: Coconut oil has natural antibacterial properties that make it a popular ingredient in natural deodorants.Oil Pulling: Coconut oil may be beneficial for your oral hygiene. Helping to reduce mouth bacteria, dental plaque, and gum inflammation.Cons:No Processed: Stay away from processed and sweetened coconut products.High Cholesterol: Coconut raises cholesterol levels across the board, which increases your risk of harmful cardiovascular effects.Island Life: Why many of the indigenous population studies on coconuts don’t apply to the general population.MCT Fallacy: Only 10% of the saturated fat in coconuts is in the form of MCTs. Also, just because MCTs get burned off a bit easier…. it doesn’t mean they are healthy for you.Whole Coconut: Why consuming whole coconut is so much different than consuming only the processed oil from a coconut.HDL Cholesterol: Why the boost in HDL doesn’t necessarily mean a boost in your health.Summary: Whole coconut seems neutral or even slightly beneficial to your health. But I recommend avoiding coconut oil and coconut milk if you want to minimize your risk of developing heart disease. Aside from eating coconut products, there are many other uses of coconut that provide natural solutions to our every day problems.I finish the episode with Tomko Tip #36 where I explain why discipline is the root of all good qualities.

She says:“Diet culture is a society that focuses on and values weight, shape, and size over health and well-being. Variations of diet culture also include rigid eating patterns that on the surface are in the name of health, but in reality are about weight shape or size. Diet culture is really tricky because as we have learned that diets don’t work, they (diet culture) have transformed their message to say that they are all about health. Their definition of health though, is one that is synonymous with weight- that when you lose weight (by any means necessary) then you will be healthier. By restricting your eating and eliminating food groups you will feel better and be happier. This isn’t reality. The reality is- people do crazy, unhealthy, even dangerous diet behaviors in the name of health to lose weight. We answer this question and much more in today's featured topic with Dr. Josh Axe... In today's interview, Ben Greenfield and the new podcast host Brock Skywalker Armstrong interview Dr. Josh Axe about the new Beyond Organic foods, including: -Reign Spring Water & Botanical Infusions -SueroViv -Amasai -Green Finished Beef -Green Fed Dairy -Beyond Organic Chocolate During the interview, Dr. Axe answers questions about product ingredients and how packaged organic food could actually be healthy. As an additional resource, Dr. Axe recommends learning more about the benefit of organic cattle by reading the book: "The Devil Is In The Milk." Full disclosure: Ben Greenfield has joined BeyondOrganic as a member. This means that if you, like Ben, begin using the products above, then Ben will make a 20% commission. And so you make the same commission if you join as a member. ------------------------------------------------ Listener Q&A: Chuck asks how much time off do you really need to take during the off-season and whether you need to get “unfit to get fit again". Nadine asks:If you read the December 2011 Triathlete magazine, they will tell you that you can get fit faster by including more intensity, less volume over the winter. In Velo Magazine for December 2011, the long, slow, zone one/two for the whole "off" season is recommended. Plus you have talked more intensity and less volume but interview Phil Maffetone who says to keep heart rate in zone one for the prep and base periods. So I am confused. What is the deal with intensity? Craig asks: My doctor says everyone should take a baby aspirin each day. What is your opinion on this? Melanie asks: First, if you are trying to get your calcium from food rather than supplements, how should you count calcium that has been added to foods? Is that considered a supplement and how useful or absorbable is it? Example, I drink almond milk which boasts 50% DV of calcium, but much of this is added to the milk in the form of calcium carbonate. Is calcium carbonate a good form? If I conclude I'm not getting enough from food, would you recommend hydroxyapatite as the best form? I've previously taken, but not currently taking, Jarrow Bone Up. Also, can you clarify the relationship between magnesium and calcium? I am having some success with my PMS by taking magnesium powder (which you have recommended) and I don't want to interfere with my success by adding in a calcium supplement. In my response to Melanie, I mention Topical Magnesium and Natural Calm Magnesium. Kyoko asks:How does a gluten free diet effect the menstrual cycle? What are those effects are how serious are they? What is your advice? I have no period and no PMS, and I actually feel better. Erin asks: I've heard you talk about the use of beet juice for improved endurance performance a few times on the podcast now. I'm just curious to know if you've ever actually tried drinking 16 oz of beet juice? I tried drinking 8 oz of it once and it very quickly made me extremely nauseous. I had to pull over my car because I thought I was going to toss my cookies. I'm great with other vegetable juices, but I can't do the straight beet juice. I guess I'm just curious to know if other people have had this same problem.
