Radical Self-Tenderness: Christie Hardwick Tenderness is pleasurable. So why does it feel like something to avoid, something to cringe from, something to quickly get through? When you are tender with yourself, or someone is tender with you, it is vulnerable. So why not be vulnerable? We all have our stories. Radical Self Tenderness takes self care to the next level. We cultivate within us a vibration of love that heals, What if taking care of you is part of taking care of the world? If you live tenderly on the inside could it contribute to more tenderness in your life and in those whose lives you touch? Can you be tender with what causes you to feel pain? Can you see how self acceptance contributes to peace? What if we were meant to love ourselves? What would that make possible? Christie has spent more than thirty years developing leaders and managing change. While in the high tech sector, she simultaneously held leadership positions at work and in the community. Christie is an American Leadership Forum Senior Fellow and faculty member. For five years, she served on the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. She was the founding board chair of GreatSchools.net, served two terms as an elected school trustee (recognized by CTA with their State Gold Award) and also chaired the board for GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network. She is an expert facilitator of Contextual Leadership with the Institute of Women's Leadership and The American Leadership Forum, Silicon Valley. Licensed in 2007 and ordained with CSL in 2015, Christie teaches virtually with Illli.org and soulcallglobal.org and is a member of the ministry team at First Unity Spiritual Campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. Christie also currently serves as executive advisor and spiritual guide to leaders from both the non-profit and corporate sectors. Brenda Wensil and Kathryn Heath are Executive Coaches who have spent decades coaching more than 800 women and working with Women Executives, Middle Managers, and Professionals across industries and age groups. They are the co-authors of ‘I Wish I'd Known This: 6 Career-Accelerating Secrets for Women Leaders'. Brenda and Kathryn offer their thoughts on navigating self-doubt in the world of Business Leadership. They share common reasons women feel “held back” from maximizing their potential. They also talk about how to prioritize goals, build a powerful support network, and weed out distractions which lead you away from achieving what you truly desire in your career. Driven by the belief that more Female Leaders equals a better world, Brenda and Kathryn explain, that many women are held back from unlocking their potential because of their own limiting beliefs. By simply changing the story you tell yourself, you completely transform the way you show up at work and in all your relationships, personal and professional. Brenda and Kathryn also speak on the value of your reputation or personal brand, no matter your role in an organization. As a Leader, how you are seen by your teammates and clients is fundamental to your success. They encourage women to simply ask around to get feedback on their strengths and gaps as others see them, and to be ready and willing to adjust how they work and interact with others, if unsatisfied with the answers they hear. Another key to maximizing your reputation is by combining your personal power, or who you are as a person, with your position power as a professional. Brenda and Kathryn ultimately remind us, that Leadership is a skill, and that deliberate goal-setting and consistent, disciplined practice are essential to growing that skill.  This podcast is sponsored by InnerProfessional online training programs. With courses geared specifically for Legendary Leaders, InnerProfessional provides an extraordinary catalog of leadership and professional development programs unlike any online training you've experienced before.   Key Takeaways:  Success in any endeavour starts with “staking yourself out”: getting clear on what you want to accomplish and the type of person you want to become in the process. It's a mistake to go at it alone. Create a support system for yourself as early as possible so you can go further in your career than you ever could by yourself. Leadership is a skill, which means yours can be developed with the right goal and strategy. Great careers are built on strengths. When you know what you're good at, you possess the keys to your professional success.    Episode Timeline:  [05:02] Introduction to Brenda Wensil & Kathryn Heath.  [13:20] How the world can become a better place with more Women Leaders.  [18:04] Finding your voice and staking yourself out. [24:56] How your career path is strongly connected to your personal path. [33:30] How Brenda and Kathryn have made an impact on Women Leaders. [40:20] What do you want to be known for? [50:39] Learning from reflection and feedback. [58:47] Combining your position power with your personal power. [1:08:57] Creating a vision and strategy for your career path. [1:13:39] Building your reputation by letting the world know your personal brand. [1:20:02] Operating on autopilot. [1:25:10] How to not miss the point of preparation. [1:31:55] What Women Leaders can contribute to the world beyond their organizations.    Standout Quotes:  “We really think the world would be a better place if there were more Women Leaders.”  “Sometimes, women are so busy working that they don't set a direction. They just kind of drift.”  “Leadership is a skill, and you can grow it.”  “How do you leverage your platform—your position power—and combine that with who you are as a person—your personal power—and see yourself as an important colleague to your peer group?”  “Women are great at strategic planning for their company, but they have to be the CEO of their career.”      Connect:   Find | Brenda Wensil    Business Website: https://www.bravanti.com   On LinkedIn: @BrendaWensil    Bio: Brenda Wensil is Managing Director & Practice Leader of Bravanti's Leadership Acceleration practice. About Katie McCleary Katie McCleary is a storyteller, professor of leadership, and a lover of people. She is co-author of Bridge the Gap, which Inc. Magazine named 1 of 3 business books to read in 2022. Her work has been featured by Forbes, PBS, Shondaland, New York Post, and more. Katie hosts NPR CapRadio's leadership podcast, “The Drive,” in partnership with The American Leadership Forum. She is also the founder of 916 Ink, a nonprofit that has transformed over 4,500 youth into confident authors who know the power of their voice and story. Mashable named her as a “Real Miss America” for her projects in low-income communities. She teaches leadership in the master's program at Pacific University and is passionate about amplifying people's personal stories to create positive change. Episode Highlights “Leadership is everywhere,” Katie began. “It's a personality choice‚ where you lean in to understanding. You have to schedule time to get to know your people.” It can even be 20 minutes. How to bridge the gap in a polarized world? Story helps here as well. “If I know your story, I can't deny your humanity.” We spend so much time at work, it's important to create communities of belonging here as well. What's one thing you can do to better connect with others? “Before your next networking event or meeting, go to the bathroom and wash your hands with cold water. The cold water resets your nervous system and provides you with a moment to check in with yourself.” What brand has made Katie smile recently? “I love Short Story.” Not simply short stories (she loves those too) but the box program with clothing for petite women, which also includes personal touches like handwritten notes. A Latino Perspective of "Prophetic City" by Dr. Stephen Klineberg

Latino Politics and News with Tony Diaz aired Tues, June 2, 2020, 2 pm on 90.1 FM KPFT, Houston. Livestream at www.KPFT.org. Join us every Tuesday. Today, we are providing a Latino perspective on the new book "Prophetic City: Houston on the Cusp of a Changing America" by Stephen Klineberg. Almost 40 years of research surveying Houstonians form the basis for the book. We will talk to Dr. Stephen Klineberg, who, as I am, is an alum of the American Leadership Forum. I'll also talk to other ALF alumni to provide an introduction to the book, which I believe lays the groundwork for creating structural change in Houston. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce CEO Dr. Laura Murillo will provide an analysis of Latino Leadership, and Texas Senator Carol Alvarado will provide us insights into Houston and Texas's political structure, which have shaped the lives of our community. In news, we are recording remotely and sometime weeks ahead of air dates. This makes it complicated to address breaking news; however, we must address the slaying of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That is an on-going and rapidly changing situation, so facts and analysis will vary day to today; however, today's show addresses structural issues. In "Prophetic City" John Guess, Chief Executive Officer Emeritus of the Houston Museum of African American Culture, is quoted as saying that the survey does not convey the level of racism that exists in Houston. Sudden acts, such as the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis streets by those assigned to serve and protect us, are examples of racial bias coming to a dangerous boiling point. We must address the layers that lead to that. “Prophetic City” quantifies inequities that limit the potential of black and brown communities to thrive. Social injustice is hard to quantify, easy to hide, and profoundly shapes our communities' confidence, tranquility, and peace of mind. Those factors are also vital to thrive. George Floyd grew up in Houston. Houston police have been involved in six lethal shooting in just over a month. Most of those killed were Black or Brown. Their names are: Nicolas Chavez, Chris Aguirre, Adrian Medearis, Rayshard Scales, Randy Lewis, Joe Castillanos. These acts must be thoroughly examined, transparently. This issue erupts then gets swept under the rug. However, if we do not address many of the social inequities quantified in Prophetic City, Houston will not be able to thrive. As the book says, Houston's fate relies on the fate of young Blacks and Latinos. As we discuss 40 years of research about Houston, it is clear the time for change is now. Latino Politics and News is intended to address those issues over the long haul. We hope our discussion today on "Prophetic City" will pave the way for more profound discussions about our communities and with our communities. We must be humanized, and imagined and treated as intellectual capable fo great thoughts and great deeds. We are in pledge drive. There are no regular shows about our art, culture, and politics on commercial television or radio. KPFT hosts a monopoly on community cultural capital. We answer to our community. 023: Driving from the Backseat: Nonprofit Leadership Lessons (Ronnie Bryant)SUMMARYThe title of Ronnie Bryant’s nonprofit leadership book says it all: Driving from the Backseat. It’s a wonderful illustration of the skill and finesse required by Executive Directors as they steer their organization along but allow a whole group of board members to sit in the front seat and “drive.” My conversation with Ronnie was just as enjoyable as reading his book, full of insight, experience and practical advice for those trying to move ahead on the nonprofit leadership path. We discussed what he learned as a “lateral entry” coming from the for-profit sector into nonprofit leadership, what key attributes he looks for in hiring and promoting staff, and especially how he navigated the nuances of board relations as a nonprofit CEO. ABOUT RONNIERonnie is Founder and Lead Consultant at Ronnie L. Bryant, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in executive coaching, organizational management, and board development and training for top-level corporate and nonprofit managers. Prior to forming Ronnie L. Bryant, LLC, Bryant served as President & CEO of Charlotte Regional Partnership in North Carolina, following executive positions at Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce (Louisiana), St. Louis Regional Chamber & Growth Association (Missouri), and Pittsburgh Regional Alliance (Pennsylvania). Job searching can feel difficult if you’re approaching it alone. One way to go farther in your job search is to team up with friends, coworkers, and mentors to lighten the load, get their advice, and make your job search journey more bearable. On this bonus episode of the Find Your Dream Job podcast, I chat with Mariana Lindsay (LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariana-lindsay-2582a71a/) who is the the urban rural connection coordinator at the American Leadership Forum of Oregon. Learn more about Mariana’s career and get her job search advice in her Q&A below, part of the Mac’s List Success Stories series. What do you do for a career? Who do you work for? I’m coordinator of American Leadership Forum (http://www.alforegon.org/) (ALF) of Oregon’s new Urban Rural Connection Program. At a time when our communities and nation feel acutely divided, ALF is leading dialogue and helping foster collaboration across differences. Throughout the 30-year history of ALF Oregon, the urban-rural divide has been a part of every class and it is an issue that affects each of our local communities. Through gathering community partners, funding, and staff capacity to bring together a diverse cohort of leaders to explore what’s causing the divide and what solutions can be generated, ALF works to better understand how the divide is defined, how it impacts communities, and when the divide is used as a weapon or as a tool. How long did it take you to find this job? 2.5 months How did you find your job? What resources did you use? What tool or tactic helped the most? I previously spent nearly 5 years at the Center for Women’s Leadership (CWL) in Portland, and served as interim Executive Director during my last year. Once we announced new Executive Director, Traci Rossi, I felt comfortable scheduling coffee with colleagues to discuss my job search and what opportunities might be available. It’s easy to get stuck in a professional bubble, so having those conversations re-opened my perspective on the types of positions and sectors available. I’ve always been a believer in reaching out to people who I’ve worked with and learned from to get their best thinking and advice. And, on the flip side, I believe in trying to always be open and ready to return the favor when they reach out. There is so much that can be learned, accomplished, and built through relationships. I think we often times are discouraged from reaching out to learn from others (see: fake it till you make it), but we can’t be perfect at everything and by asking for partnership, we give another person the chance to shine and teach. ALF Executive Director, Kendall Clawson, has been a mentor and friend for 7 years, and we’d collaborated on projects and shared more time over coffee than I can count. Our history meant we’d developed a good sense of each other’s passions and professional backgrounds. She approached me about the new Urban Rural project and it being a fit for my skillset. I applied, and was fortunate enough to get the job, partly in thanks to some of my professional contacts (including the former CWL Board Chair Martha Pellegrino) who were ALF Senior Fellows and were generous enough to vouch for me. What was the most difficult part of your job search? How did you overcome this challenge? Above is the short and sweet version, but it doesn’t encompass the parts of the job search that weren’t slam dunks: applying for jobs that I didn’t get, contemplating moving to another job market, and the self-doubt of starting a new chapter. You can’t pursue it all, no matter how much you want to. There are only so many hours in the day, and not every job is right for you. Sifting through job announcements and figuring out which ones really fit my professional experience, values, and ambitions was time-consuming and often exhausting. I tried to go on a run most days and check in with friends – the time to reflect internally on a run and externally through friends helped me distill where I should be putting my energy. During the in-between time, I pursued contract work, which helped me stay active in my professional networks and eased my financial concerns. What is the single best piece of advice you would offer other job-seekers? It’s hard to know which meeting, application, or random conversation will be the door that opens to the next career chapter. So be present where you are and with who you’re with in the moment. Job-seeking is usually a stressful season, so it’s easy for the mind to drift to the long to-do list and the seemingly omnipresent worries, but you can only be in one place at a time and you want to get the most out of the now. Why do you love your job? I love the daily chance to collaborate with leaders across regions and sectors who believe in an Oregon that thrives because diversity is welcomed, communities are heard and supported, equity is paramount, and the state is bursting with thoughtful innovation. My job affords me the chance to think deeply, feel passionately, and work with people who inspire me.
