Hello Wyfe Up Fam, How is everyone doing today? I pray all is well with everyone and that you are having an amazing Thursday! In today's episode, I ask - Do you speak Naganese? What is Naganese? Naganese is the language that a nagging wife speaks. Would your husband say that you nag a lot? Let's talk about it. See you on the inside.
Tune in to hear a continuation of my conversation with Anese Barnett, a perinatal mental health therapist. You will benefit from listening if you are a NICU mother who has experienced or is currently experiencing the stress and associated trauma of having a baby in the NICU. Or if you are a NICU dad, grandparent, or friend to a NICU Mom and need some tangible advice to help her pause and address her own self care. Members of the NICU care team specifically nurses, NNPs, Neonatologists, and social workers will also hear concrete suggestions on how to support your NICU Moms. Anese and I continued our discussion of maternal ritualistic behaviors and how their loved ones can address their concerns to them in an empathetic and understanding way so they are willing to open up and accept further help. We reviewed the mental and physical ailments associated with trauma if it is not addressed in a healthy and timely manner. Did you know that we as mothers can actually pass our trauma and negativity down to our children if we do not deal with the birth trauma and/or NICU trauma that we endured. Anese offered some great resources for NICU parents or anyone who wants to understand more about NICU trauma and how our body as a whole can be affected for years if it is not dealt with as well as ways to find the therapist that is right for you! Maternal Mental Health is incredibly important and we as Moms tend to not make it a priority. But, I strongly encourage you to listen because I promise you will gain some new insight. Develop resilience and don’t rush out of your discomfort What You Will Learn: How the chaos of 2020 impacted Anese and her team, and how they learned to develop resilience and were able to pivot the business to adjust to change What important lessons Anese has learned from navigating the unprecedented challenges of the past year, and why she believes the work is never “done” What steps you can take to help your team develop resilience and adapt to the challenges you are facing Why Anese challenged herself and her team to decide who they want to become in the new year, and why part of Anese’s resilience is in how she wants the pandemic to “serve her becoming” Why the pandemic has created a universal shared experience and an opportunity for all of us to consider who we want to become as we navigate these challenges How Anese and her team spent three months in spring 2020 doubling down on their efforts to be helpful, and how that helped create clarity for the rest of the year and 2021 Why Anese believes being “responsible” and being “response-able” are two very different things with different kinds of energy How D.E.N.T. (Do what you can, Engage with a full heart, Now, Trust) is a powerful acronym that helps guide and motivate Anese How Anese and her team use D.E.N.T. to make an impact on the struggle of food insecurity that many people face How Anese realized that decreasing their prices during the pandemic wasn’t the right move to make, and how instead she focused on adding value and being helpful Why it is important to not rush out of your discomfort but instead to fully experience your discomfort and the range of feelings that come with it Develop resilience and don’t rush out of your discomfort The reality is that 2020 was an exceptionally challenging year for businesses and agencies of all kinds — and we enter 2021 with no certain idea of what challenges the new year will bring. However, attempting to rush out of the discomfort we have felt through the last year can cause us to miss the important lessons the challenges we tackled can teach us. Instead, it is important to reflect, learn, and develop resilience to help us prepare for the coming year. In this episode of Onward Nation, encore guest Anese Cavanaugh shares how she and her team learned to develop resilience, and how doubling down on their efforts to be helpful are better positioning them for 2021. Develop resilience to face the future Think of resilience as armor to protect your business against uncertainty. When you develop resilience, you are better able to persevere through times of hardship and adapt to the unexpected. It is a trait that can be learned, practiced and mastered just like many other business skills. A big part of learning to develop resilience lies in taking the time to feel your discomfort and reflect on your experiences. 2020 was a difficult year for all of us, and it is important to acknowledge this fact and reflect on the trails we faced and the storms we weathered. It also offers us a chance to take stock of what worked and what didn’t, as well as to identify new opportunities presented to us even in the midst of the chaos. Why the right mindset can help you overcome obstacles Anese’s business has been primarily focused on speaking engagements and hosting leadership events, and the outbreak of the global pandemic meant many of the ways Anese engages her audience weren’t available in 2020 due to social distancing. However, Anese and her team spent three months in the spring focusing on how they could be more helpful, choosing to add value rather than to lower their prices. This important period of reflection and dedication to doubling down allowed Anese’s team to make a big shift to virtual offerings. Though they didn’t end 2020 where they thought they would, they were much better positioned for a strong 2021 than they would have been had they gone into “survival mode”. Their efforts to develop resilience and focus on being helpful paid off, and the team has a much stronger and more unified focus for the coming year. Anese demonstrates that resilience and the right mindset can help you and your team weather difficult times and emerge from the global pandemic stronger than before. About Anese Cavanaugh Anese Cavanaugh is devoted to helping people show up and bring their best selves to the table in order to create a significant positive impact in their lives. When Anese and her husband found out they were pregnant, it was not only a surprise but extremely exciting. They were caught off guard when at ten weeks, her pregnancy would shift into high risk as she was diagnosed with a short cervix, making her susceptible to preterm labor. At 20 weeks, her doctor indicated they would need to make some serious changes to help maintain the chances of that occurring. These changes included strict bed rest and a treatment plan for a cerclage (cervical stitch) placed.Due to hospital administration issues, in the midst of this, Anese would lose her black OBGYN's care and begin seeing another doctor. An older white woman who not only dismissed Anese's concerns but didn't think she needed to receive the cerclage. But with the support of her doula, a family friend who happened to be an OBGYN, and the careful eye of a black sonographer during an appointment, Anese was able to advocate for herself and at 23 weeks was rushed to L&D, where she received medication to stop contractions and place the cerclage.Anese would be met with the unexpected again, at 31 weeks when her water broke, resulting in a 2-week hospital stay, and at 33 weeks going into spontaneous labor. While labor wasn't long, pushing her son earthside did take an extended amount of time, and after 2 hours and birth vacuum assistance, she and her husband got to meet their 3lb baby boy. When reflecting on her experience, Anese shared that she was thankful to have had a birth team that gave her the space to try. Many plans for her birth had changed; she hadn't thought about that impact until she was in the moment having it all unfold. But her birth team made sure she was informed, and all options were considered. This type of support would continue as her family adjusted to life in the NICU. After five weeks, they were able to bring their son home. And as they celebrate year two of his life, healing continues and is just beginning for some family members. The layers of healing have allowed Anese to create support systems for other mothers with her similar experience. It has created a deeper bond for her husband and son and created space for her father to share his experience. Lastly, it sheds light on just how impactful full family-centered and focused care can be.Resources:Postpartum Support International | provide current information, resources, education, advocate for further research and legislation to support perinatal mental healthThe Breakthrough Mama | mental health and postpartum preparedness counseling
Most of us think about being contagious in terms of a virus or ill health, especially at this time as the coronavirus is spreading rapidly around the world, but emotions and attitudes are also contagious. During my Conscious Leadership in Action conversation with Anese Cavanaugh, author of the book, Contagious You, we talked about how we as leaders are contagious. The question is, are we positively or negatively contagious? As Anese explained, we pick up on each other's vibe, or energetic presence. Meetings are a good example. We walk into the meeting, there's a couple of us that feel really great, we're really happy to be there, and there's that one person in the room where their vibe is just really low. Maybe their arms are crossed, their brows are furled. You can feel them, you can feel it. And what generally will happen is the other people will often catch that vibe, and they'll meet the lowest vibration in the room, and that case that lowest vibration was contagious. Other people caught it, they felt it, they saw it. They might have tried to hold their state for a little while, but ultimately, most often, unless somebody is really good at holding their state, they'll match the lower vibe. It's the same thing out in the world, in one-on-one conversations. If I come into a conversation with you, and I'm feeling really low vibe, that you're able to hold your state and you bring a really beautiful energetic presence. Not fake, not rah rah, not trying to get me out of my state, but if I can be present that I can actually also catch your vibe and I can step into a higher level of presence. So we're constantly interacting with each other's energy and is it is a choice of what we want to put out there and a choice of what we decide to take on, and that's where the contagiousness comes in. Anese went on to talk about intentional energetic presence (IEP). Being conscious and intentional about the energetic presence we bring to everything we do. With intention, which is what I want to have happen, we can add energy, which is the energy and stamina to actually create that intention. And then we have presence, which is how we are going to show up in the world. We can ask ourselves, what will my actual presence be? Am I going to be really conscious? Am I going to be positively or negatively contagious? For those of you with the coronavirus or at risk of being infected with the coronavirus, and those of you have are experiencing loss because of the coronavirus, we send you love, and wish for you peace and good vibrations. On today’s show, I’m talking with Anese Cavanaugh. Anese created the IEP (Intentional Energetic Presence) methodology on how you show up, being intentional, the way you take care of yourself. She also created a company out of her ideal beautiful job (Active Choices Incorporated; better known as IEP methodology) and has written two books, Contagious Culture, and Contagious You. In this episode, we’re talking about how you can reenergize your leadership energy by building a healthy, happy, contagious culture within your business. The most important takeaway from this episode is the importance of culture in your work environment. Leadership and the culture are two critical components that make it fun for your team to do the hard work they have to do. People are what it takes. It starts with you and how (or if) you’re showing up. What do you want your impact to be? Once you start to name your assumptions, you start to realize they're only assumptions and they're probably not fully real. And there's things that you can get curious about. What You Will Learn In Today's Podcast Interview How recognizing that you’re part of the problem gives you back your power. Why you need to take better care of your energy. What the IEP Method® (Intentional Energetic Presence®) is and the vital role it plays in your business. When burnout isn’t about your financial asset, but the role you play in it. How writing out her ideal job description and crafting her intentions inspired Anese to start her first company. Who is responsible for creating the culture in your business and how you can improve it. If you take care of your people and are being intentional about your impact, the money takes care of itself. (or: Money follows if you treat your people right and are intentional about your impact.) How to identify the lowest vibration in the room and the best way to deal with these people—even if it’s you. It’s better to be clear and clean about your intentions because people can pick up on the energy behind your ask and react poorly to feeling manipulated. When and how you can “reboot your presence” in the moment for better outcomes. What “energetic hygiene” means, how it affects you even when you aren’t consciously managing your energy and what you can realistically do to improve it. The impact of letting employees linger on in the business longer than they should, from what it says to your other staff to the resources you’ll waste even months after you release them. Why direct engagement agreements can save team morale and solve issues before they fester. A: So one is the mindset that self-care is not selfish, self care is actually self full. Key Takeaways: “Self-doubt, feeling rushed, experiencing imposter syndrome, these are all things that tie into not fully standing and holding our space and taking really good care of ourselves that we can do so.” - Anese Cavanaugh “Just stop and take even 10 minutes for themselves, to get clear on how they're feeling, to notice their breath, how their bodies feeling, to notice their emotions right now and to ask themselves simply what they need. Just a 10-minute pause at any moment during the day.” - Anese Cavanaugh “Start your day with "you" time, only for you. Nobody gets into that. Your emails don't get into that. Your texting doesn't get into that. Nobody gets into that space for those first sacred minutes of the day, and you spend that time to really get clear about the things I just offered and to set your intentions around it.” - Anese Cavanaugh “Turn self-care from something that you don't have time for, you can't prioritize it, you'll do it later, turn it into your number one priority because it enables you to do more for everybody loving to lead.” - Anese Cavanaugh “The other one is turning the word "responsibility" or the feeling of being responsible for everything, to turning it into response-able, which means instead of me being responsible for everything around me or everyone around me, instead of that, I am able to respond to whatever comes up.” - Anese Cavanaugh Ways to Connect with Anese Cavanaugh Website: https://www.anesecavanaugh.com Website (IEP Method): https://blog.anesecavanaugh.com/subscribe Ways to Connect with Sarah E. Bill Horan talks to Anese Cavanaugh, author of CONTAGIOUS YOU. Anese will discuss what is the difference between doing culture and being it, why people may not realize when they have a negative impact, why awareness is power, and what the 3 questions we should ask ourselves are.
How can you master your personal energy, presence and intention? Anese Cavanaugh, author of “Contagious You” and Skip’s guest on this week’s “Aim Higher,” suggests that the “how” may not be as important as the “when.” And the when is always… now. It is always the moment to start. Take a breath. Examine how you feel. What intentions are you brining into the room you’re in right now and to your leadership journey. Because that energy is going to be what is contagious about you. Skip and Anese talk about how leaders who are conscious of that energy can then take command of themselves and make much more of an impact. That’s what it means to be positively contagious. If you listen, you’ll get some good, practical advice on how to start with your inner game – taking care of your health, your self-talk, your self-kindness – and then move outward to being “positively contagious” towards others.

In this episode we speak with Anese Cavanaugh. Anese is devoted to helping people show up and bring their best selves to the table in order to create significant positive impact in their lives. She appears on stages around the world, guest lectures at universities, and writes (a lot). She is the creator of the IEP Method® (Intentional Energetic Presence®). She’s an advisor and thinking partner to leaders and organizations around the world, and author of CONTAGIOUS CULTURE: Show Up, Set the Tone, and Intentionally Create an Organization That Thrives and CONTAGIOUS YOU: Unlock Your Power to Influence Lead and Create the Impact you Want (which was released a few weeks ago). Her areas of expertise are on topics we’re passionate about and try to uncover in this podcast. She’s a leading voice on intention, energy, and presence, she helps people unlock greater leadership potential, collaborate more inspiringly, create more openly, intuit more bravely, and lead more joyfully and effectively. She believes that we all have our divine areas of expertise and talents and gifts, and that part of the reason why we’re on the planet is to pay those gifts forward. At 14 years old, she desperately needed a job so as to be able to help out with bills at home, following her parents’ messy divorce. This lead her to lie on her application and say she was actually 15. By the end of the interview, she admitted that she had lied. They surprised her by hiring her anyway based on her integrity and the fact that she came forward with the truth. “I remember the feeling in my body of being afraid to tell the truth but knowing it was the right thing to do. That was a major moment, where I got in touch with what integrity meant and how good that felt and that I wanted more of it”. Later on, after starting that job, she was having a hard time with her family’s situation and the things she had to give up in order to support the family. She was feeling sorry for herself and thinking how terrible her life was going to be. She then suddenly thought “what if your life doesn’t have to be terrible? What if what’s happening isn’t happening to you but for you? And it’s giving you skills that you can learn?” In that moment she got in touch with the concept of choice. Right then and there she made a decision to live a really awesome life. As you’ll hear, Anese is very visceral and connected to her feelings. As such, she was able to achieve a very high level of flow in her work and pay forward her insights in a way that’s very intuitive to relate to and learn from. We cover a lot of ground: - The impact of how the way we show up to situations has on everything that we do - How the way we take care of ourselves influences our ability to influence other people - How post-it notes and vision lead her to her dream occupation doing what she loves and fulfilling herself - How the choices we make become choice points affecting our future choices and forming new neural-pathways in our brains - The importance of emotional authenticity - How holding accountability is essential for organisational success - How true leadership isn’t possible without self-care ...& much more About half way through our video call, Ronen had to step out of shot several times in order to go blow his nose. Naturally he didn’t want to interrupt the recording and the flow of the conversation but it was becoming odd not to explain to Anese what was going on. This became a real life lesson in what Anese is preaching - the environmental energy was shifting around those circumstances and by addressing it we were able to put Anese at ease and confirm this had nothing to do with our conversation. Had we not done that, this would be hanging over our heads, unspoken of, and we wouldn’t have had her full emotional bandwidth. This interview will help you tap into your inner leader, no matter where you are in life. We hope you enjoy your listen.
On today’s show, Anese Cavanaugh joins me for the second time. She’s an author and speaker, who shares her knowledge around the country about leadership, culture, being positively contagious, nurturing our relationships and creating impact. Anese and I chatted about some of the concepts included in her latest book Contagious You: Unlock Your Power to Influence, Lead, and Create the Impact You Want during our conversation. We talked about intentional energetic presence (IEP), how to prevent burnout, and how to detect workaholism. Anese also shares a useful tool for leaders called DENT. Takeaways: [4:39] Anese talks about what prompted her to write her new book called Contagious You. [6:07] Anese shares the meaning of Intentional Energetic Presence. [7:18] Mike shares his own personal example and how having a high level of energy can sometimes get in the way of being fully intentional, present, and aware. [9:25] The concept of meeting the group where it is, without compromising your energy. [13:30] Having a good energetic presence doesn’t mean to be bouncing off the walls, it is the quality of this presence that matters and how it serves the rest of the people in the room. [15:35] There is a difference between men and women in a group, where men tend to interrupt and take more space while women are often more careful. [17:43] The cultural background influences the way we communicate and what we considered acceptable and not on our closest relationships. [21:05] When we feel comfortable we don’t have to worry so much about being present. [23:55] Anese shares different pieces of burnout: Connection with the pause and being present. Stay connected to the purpose (Why are you doing what you are doing?). Connect with people. Connection to pain, pleasure, and play. [33:55] Sitting with your pain and struggling helps to process the feeling faster and learn from it more effectively. [34:12] These are questions you should ask yourself if you are wondering if you are just being passionate about work or if you have become a workaholic: How are you feeling? Is it having a negative impact on my family and relationships? If it is, can I stop it? What do I need? [37:30] In order to avoid burnout it is important to be aware of the relationship we have with our work and to pay attention to how our purpose is growing along with ourselves. [39:10] Anese shares the concept of leadership depression and how it is related to isolation and the feeling that regardless of how much is done, it is not enough. Do ever see people seamlessly create attraction and attention? Join Ash this week as she talks with Anese Cavanaugh a speaker, advisor, author and contributor to Inc and The Huffington Post to walk through how to be contagious, memorable and magnetic. Anese shares 5 steps to make an intentional impact and reveals the IEP (Intentional Energetic Presence) method and why you MUST integrate it into your life. She shares one of the most important leadership skills that anyone can learn. Do you typically walk into a room distracted on your phone? This dictates the presence you are sharing with others and with yourself. In order to be an impactful leader and vivacious person the way you enter a new space matters. Anese and Ash talk through tips for being powerfully present when you join a new environment and how to stay present when you are in it. Being fully present is tied directly to your ability to practice self-care, and that doesn’t just mean getting a massage or pedicure. If you live a people-pleasing life and you want to say no but find yourself constantly saying yes, Anese walks through tips for how to say no in grace and practice valuable self-care. Being constantly “on” can be exhausting, if you don’t do it right you will walk yourself straight into burnout territory. Listen in to learn the “4 P’s” to burnout and how to make sure you manage them properly. Don’t forget to stick around for Ash’s post-episode notes. Anese Cavanaugh, guest on episode #104 of The Storytellers Network, didn't consider herself a storyteller. She thought that had to mean following a specific story structure, maybe creating a hero's journey each time and coming up with stories. In talking with Dan, listening to episodes and looking over the show prep for their interview, Anese realized that she's been telling stories her entire professional life. She used stories in her first book, Contagious Culture. And she uses them in her most recent release, Contagious You.Once she came to terms with how much of a storyteller she was, she decided she wanted to be more intentional. So now Anese and Dan are starting a 21-day story gathering “writing challenge.”
How do you show up for work? For home? Anese Cavanaugh believes we have the choice of how we show up, so we have the power. When you have awareness of your leadership presence, you increase your credibility and the power to influence others. In this episode, Anese discusses 1. IEP Method®. 2. Why we are contagious. 3. Green Team Academy Podcast with Joan Gregerson: Episode 57 Tune in to hear my interview with second-grade teacher Anese Forsyth. Learn how Anese started recycling in her 2nd grade bilingual classroom in Reagan Elementary and how it soon spread to become a resource for the entire community. Visit Green Team Academy for complete show notes and resource links. Meet Anese! Anese attributes her passion for nature to her parents. Anese was raised in Pakistan and in Latin America. "It made us appreciate the world as entire planet and how amazing it is." said Anese. "We're not all that different." Anese has been a teacher for 28 years and previously helped with a garden at her previous school. Anese began working at Reagan Elementary with Ector County Independent School District in Odessa, TX in 2016. Anese teaches in a bilingual second-grade class. The kids in the classroom are Spanish speakers, mostly from rural areas. FREE MASTERCLASS WITH JOAN Saturday 10 am & 3 pm How to Transform Yourself & Our World Before It's Too Late Recycling at Reagan Elementary Anese started by reading books to her kids, including The Lorax and The Wump World. This set the foundation of why it's important to care for the planet. Next, Anese helped her kids start recycling plastic bottles, from their school breakfasts. Anese explained to the kids, "This plastic is from fossil fuels, a natural resource that comes from the ground. We live in the Permian basin. This is why many of your parents have a job. We need to conserve this precious natural resource." She then added recycling of cardboard, paper and aluminum in the classroom. From there, Anese coordinated with her principal, Mr. Wayne Squires, to get approval to expand the recycling program schoolwide. "It's important to have the support of your principal, custodians, teachers and parents." Anese's journey with recycling follows what many teachers do. She started by buying her own bins for her classroom. From there, she went out and found several partner organizations that each supported the program: Advice for Others Asked what advice she would give to a teacher who want to start something similar in the schools in their community, Anese said, Have a big idea of what you want to do, but start small with your classroom. Change the routine to include recycling, and let the kids cycle through so they all learn how to do it. Be able to motivate people and encourage people. rather than pushing people to do something they don't want to do. Be ready to support them when they're ready to change. Be positive, helpful and patient! Use social media to highlight progress and generate interest. Remind your students that they are leaders, and that they will take care of the planet going forward. Don't give up! Be the light. Be the change. We’re going to always be moving fast so we have to get better. One of the things we can get better at is being really conscious about how we show up for ourselves and each other and be really conscious about our intentions, energy, and presence in anything we do.” [14:16] “Once I claim that my presence has an impact and how I show up matters and that I am the author of that, nobody can take that away from me.” [32:32] “You got to honor yourself first so that you can honor everybody else.” [41:40] Links Find Anese Cavanaugh online Follow Anese on Twitter | Facebook | YouTube Get your IEP resources here Contagious Culture by Anese Cavanaugh The Leader You Will Be by Anese Cavanaugh Heartmath Listen to Best-Self Management Here Find 15Five online Follow 15Five on Facebook | Twitter | Linkedin

On this episode, Anese Cavanaugh, CEO of Active Choices, Inc., joins Sima Vasa to talk culture and leadership. Devoted to helping people show up, Anese is an author and is the leading voice on intention, energy and presence. Today she brings to us the story behind her famous IEP Method. “I believe that we each create the culture that we are a part of.” - Anese Cavanaugh Anese Cavanaugh - Contagious Culture After doing work with business leaders and organizations for 15-16 years, Anese wrote the book Contagious Culture. She discovered two myths that every business leader and organization believe in. “One was that leadership was about what we do… The second myth was that culture was created by everybody around us.” - Anese Cavanaugh What people didn’t realize, however, is that leadership is about who we be, how we show up, our energy, intentions and presence. Culture, on the other hand, isn’t something created by everybody else but by each and everyone that is part of it. Leadership and Culture Combined When we add leadership and culture together, it gets easier to realize how we’re the ones creating and defining both and that we are actually contagious. This is the very foundation of the book that she wrote. Intentional Energetic Presence Anese authored her book to give people as many tools and resources around the IEP Method, which helps people show up better and also to lend that into leadership and cultural optimization. IEP is something that people bring to every single room, every single interaction that they have and everything that they do. It’s what happens when they show up for themselves and for others. “It’s a choice. So the more intentional I can be with that, the better able I am to create more of a pleasurable impact and more of my intended impact in leadership.” - Anese Cavanaugh Quick links to connect with Anese Cavanaugh: Website - Anese Cavanaugh IEP Live Two-Day Event Twitter - Anese Cavanaugh Twitter - IEP Method Sima loves to hear from her listeners with input, questions, suggestions and just to connect! Introduced through the Small Giants Community, we are thrilled to welcome leadership advisor and strategist, Anese Cavanaugh, to The Second Stage. Anese sites that 93% of our impact is in how we “show up,” leaving only 7% of our impact to the words we actually say. During our conversation with Ms. Cavanaugh we will talk about what she describes as the five steps for creating intentional impact, including knowing the outcomes you want to get out of any and every interaction and/or meeting. Ms. Cavanaugh will also share with us her leadership methodology, Intentional Energetic Presence®, and how to create a “Contagious Culture,” the title of her new book. As a business owner and the leader of your organization, you hold the power to influence and create the culture around you, so why not make it positive and impactful!
In preparation for my interview with Anese Cavanaugh, I reviewed her website and watched this speech she gave at the Inc. Women’s Summit. Her message resonated with the mission of the Provoking Your Greatness podcast, and I was excited for this interview. Our forty minutes together felt more like catching up with a good friend than interviewing an expert, author, and successful businesswoman. With that kind of chemistry, I knew we had to work together on a project. A few weeks after the interview, we jumped on a Skype call to record a conversation about love, vulnerability, and leadership. For nearly an hour, we tossed ideas back and forth, got vulnerable, and shared strategies we use (and teach) for loving your work and your team. While the conversation was valuable and fun, the most valuable part for me came after we shut off the recording. Just before we hung up, I asked Anese, “If you hear of anyone looking for a speaker, would you put my name in the hat?” As an expert receiving requests to speak, she could suggest me for events requiring more than one speaker. Within seconds, she pasted a link to a website where a couple dozen business conferences are listed, and suggested I reach out and submit myself as a speaker for the various events. Not realizing why, I felt of twinge of irritation and caught myself thinking, “If I’m a good enough speaker, I shouldn’t need to submit myself—they should come to me.” I asked, “How did you get the opportunity to speak at the Inc. conference,” fully expecting to hear some form of, “Word of mouth.” “Some were by referral, but many of them were by submitting myself and putting myself out there to speak at their venues. One venue I submitted to for two years before I got the opportunity,” she said, as if such an activity was normal for talented speakers. “Sometimes when I submitted my name for a conference,” she continued, “I’d get an email encouraging me to keep submitting. Other times—radio silence. So, I kept submitting. ” “Keep submitting? I don’t want to submit at all, much less keep submitting,” I thought, not understanding why I was irritated. Before I could figure out what all my agitation was about, Anese added, “And while it seemed like they were ignoring me, or didn’t want me, it turned out they were very good people, and well intended, just busy and sometimes a bit disorganized.” While I wasn’t aware of it in the moment, those words freed me—to start submitting, keep submitting, and put myself out there in a big way. Until Anese said the words, “they weren’t ignoring me,” I unknowingly believed that any response short of, “We’d love to have you,” meant they thought I wasn’t good enough. “Misti,” Anese continued, “I had been trying to get the opportunity to publish an article in Inc. for years. At the end of one of my speaking events, an editor from Inc came up to me and asked if I’d like to have my own column with them.” Deeply inspired by her tenacity, I made a decision in that moment, and have been submitting my name to speak at various events ever since. Recognizing this may take some time, I created a spreadsheet to keep track of my march toward my dreams. Interestingly, before that conversation with Anese, I believed I was doing everything I could to get opportunities to speak. Now, I’m left wondering if I am unknowingly “playing small” in other areas of my life in order to avoid feelings of rejection. When you’re open and trusting of all emotions, you’ll see the signs pointing you in the direction you need to go. While we do not typically think of anger, irritation, or frustration this way, they are excellent clues to help us see where we need to pay attention. What agitates you? The answer may point you to a deeply ingrained behavior that needs to change. Happiness and joy are easier to tap into, while irritation is inherently repulsive. Use frustrating moments to listen to the thoughts you’re thinking, and the beliefs they create. Ask yourself if those thoughts are adding to your courage, or robbing you of the opportunities you crave. While it’s easy to think in terms of “good/bad or right/wrong,” consider saying to yourself, “Isn’t that interesting?” when you uncover truths about yourself that are uncomfortable. Having a gentle curiosity provides the strongest foundation for growth. “Your limitations are your invitations.”—Beth House Graham. Rather than resisting the reality of self-limiting thoughts and beliefs, meet them with an open, curious, mind. From this vantage point, new beliefs can make their way into your consciousness. AQQOLADE's LearnChair Radio host Bob Dragone interviews noted author and speaker Anese Cavanaugh on her IEP (Intentional Energetic Presence) method of leadership development. In explaining her IEP method, Anese explains the importance of "showing up." - our impact with people and how others respond to who we are and how we present ourselves. With IEP, we get to be the ’cause’ of things, without it, those things get to be the ‘cause’ of us. IEP helps people work better together, show up more fully, and create the impact they want—intentionally. The podcast with Anese is a short workshop on how IEP works and how it can benefit you. Anese and Bob also discuss the status of leadership in the U.S, today and how leaders are being developed. Finally, Anese gives an interesting formulation on what it takes to be a leader. She talks about "filling the container," for both others and ourselves to reach the leadership potential we all have. This is a podcast with a lot of value for listeners looking to expand their leadership abilities.

During the interview, Anese provided a simple strategy to discovering your core values. Knowing, and staying true to, your values, increase confidence. Here’s a part of the process to get you started—Take note: What pisses you off, irritates, or angers you? Why? Where you do tend to spend your money? What’s most important to you? To show up powerfully, Reboot your presence in the moment—get intentional about the impact you want to make and how you want to feel. Set intentional outcomes for your meeting, day, month, year, etc. Take good care of yourself—mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Here we are for part 2 with Anese Cavanaugh, as she continues her discussion of Intentional Energetic Presence and her book Contagious Culture. Anese is devoted to helping people show up and bring their best selves to the table in order to create significant positive impact in their lives. She is the creator of the IEP Method® , an advisor and thinking partner to leaders and organizations around the world, and author of Contagious Culture: Show Up, Set the Tone, and Intentionally Create an Organization That Thrives. We’ll see you on the other side of the conversation with our round of questions. Social Shareables - Takeaways from part two with Anese, When addressing culture, it is an inside out approach. Leaders, look inside and then move out. We all have superpowers and have an impact on those around us. Choose today how you will use them. Is the way I show up Is the way I talk to myself Is the way I talk to other people Is the way I take care for myself Is the way I regard others ...helping me have the impact I want to have on the world? If, “no”, then there is beautiful work to be done there. Showing up for yourself means you share the idea in a meeting when you normally wouldn’t share. Make your next meeting more productive: make it shorter and make an agreement to have no phones in the meeting. Questions for entrepreneurs, leaders, and managers Do you believe you have superpowers? IE, do you truly believe you impact those around you with your attitude and energy? How can you approach your next meeting with intention that will affect the energy of you and your team?
